Lions Club holding community go-kart race day on August 27

By Mark Ribble Leamington Lions Club spokesman Bruce Medcalf is hoping that the business community will take up the challenge on August 27 and in turn, help the local Salvation Army. The Lions Club of Leamington, in partnership with Point Pelee Karting and the Salvation Army, is hosting the first — and hopefully annual — Lions Club Race Day at the popular local go-kart track. “There will be a corporate challenge element to it,” says Medcalf. “We hope businesses will send a representative to race on their behalf.” Businesses can challenge each other to a race,

with the winners getting to hold on to bragging rights until next year. “We’re hoping to get the greenhouses to challenge each other and maybe even the restaurants,” added Medcalf. Jason Papp, owner of Point Pelee Karting, says the day will be family-oriented, with lots to do for kids. “We will have discounted kart rentals so the kids can come and enjoy themselves,” he said. “Coming out of COVID, we want families to get out and have some fun.” Major Ron Wickens of the Salvation Army Leamington Corps says that he’s looking forward to a

great day at the track. “What a great way to get out and do something fun,” he said. “And all for a good cause.” The proceeds raised will be turned over to the Salvation Army by the Lions Club and Medcalf hopes they can use this year’s event as a building block to something much larger in the future. “I’d love to see a full slate of challenge races between the businesses,” he said. “That friendly fun competition creates great feelings in the community.” The event will happen on Sunday, August 27 at the track located at 538 Bevel Line Road. If interested in being part of the business challenge, cost is $100 per racer and you’ll be using the Point Pelee Karting go-karts to take on other business people in the community. There will be lots for the kids to do, including miniature races for various ages and driving skills, as well as food vendors and possibly a classic car show.
