By-law amendment needed

Leamington holding public meeting on old LDSS site Leamington Council will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, July 26 at 6 pm to consider a zoning by-law amendment for 125 Talbot Street West — the former Leamington District Secondary School.

It is proposed that the site be rezoned from Institutional (I) to a site specific Residential Zone to allow future residential development including two-unit dwellings, semi-detached dwellings, townhomes and multi-unit dwellings, including apartment buildings less than six storeys in height.

The zoning will also permit a limited amount of commercial uses which are supportive to the proposed residential uses on the site.

This meeting will be held in a virtual forum through electronic participation only. There will not be an in-person meeting. You may view the meeting on the municipality’s website at www.leamington.ca/live.

If you wish to provide oral comments at the electronic meeting, you must register in advance by emailing clerks@leamington.ca or calling 519-326-5761 ext. 1121 prior to 12 pm the date of the meeting.

Once you register, you will be contacted by the clerk’s department and provided information on how to make your submission at the electronic meeting by electronic participation. To participate, you will need access to a computer or tablet with internet service or a telephone.

As an alternative to attending the virtual meeting, written correspondence may be submitted to the Clerk no later than 12 pm on the date of the meeting. By Greg Coulter The Town of Kingsville gave outgoing Mayor Nelson Santos a great sendoff last week as dignitaries, friends, family and residents came together to wish him farewell.

July 17 will officially mark the end of the 25year Santos era — serving the citizens of Kingsville and Essex County — as he pursues a new career opportunity as CAO of the Township of Adjala-Toso-

rontio.

Thursday, July 7 was marked with an open house at Lakeside Pavilion where well-wishers were treated to refreshments and a tribute slide show.

Mayor Santos greeted each of the guests with conversations of past accomplishments and future opportunities, not only for himself and his family but also for the community that he has proudly

served.

Leamington Mayor Hilda MacDonald was one of the first guests to arrive.

They have known each other for over 40 years and as she offered congratulations she also noted, “I’m a little bit sad to see this day happen.”

Mayor Santos assured her they will remain in touch.

Council will soon begin the quest to fill his seat.

DEMOLITION OF A KINGSVILLE LANDMARK

The Kingsville Railway Powerhouse was demolished recently as neighbours watched the demolition of one of Kingsville’s oldest buildings from afar (top photo). The powerhouse once equipped the Windsor-Essex and Lakeshore Rapid Railway. The railway operated from 1905 until about 1932 when the last electric rail car operated on the line. The powerhouse closed in 1930.

Fatal fire investigation continues A fire in the 300 block of Erie Street South in Leamington on Friday, July 8 has left one person dead and a home totally destroyed.

The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal was called in by Leamington Fire Services and Ontario Provincial Police and was still on scene as of Monday morning.

Details are scarce at this point but it is known that a deceased person was found inside the burned out shell by investigators.

The Essex County OPP Crime Unit and OPP Forensic Identification

Services were assisting the Chief Coroner and members from the Fire Marshal’s Office in determining the identity of the victim and investigating the cause of the blaze.

The call came in at 11:52 p.m. on Friday evening and crews arrived on scene to find the home completely engulfed.

Essex County OPP is requesting anyone who was in the area of Erie Street South and Robson Road between the hours of 10:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Friday, July 8 and who may have witnessed anything or have dashcam or

security camera footage to call the Essex County OPP Crime Unit at 1-888-3101122.

Should you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or leave an anonymous online message at www. catchcrooks.com where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.

Pot bust in Kingsville worth $61 million

Police have seized more than $61 million worth of illegal cannabis from two Kingsville production sites as part of an ongoing investigation under the Cannabis Act. On June 28, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Provincial Joint Forces Cannabis Enforcement Team (PJFCET) executed two search warrants in Kingsville at two greenhouse locations and two associated residences.

As a result, police seized more than 45,000 illegal cannabis plants and eight tonnes of pro-

cessed illegal cannabis estimated to be worth more than $61 million, as well as offence-related property estimated to be in excess of $300,000.

Charges have not been laid at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

The OPP-led PJFCET was provided assistance throughout this investigation by members of

The PJFCET is responsible for enforcing federal and provincial cannabis laws. This dedicated team investigates criminal enterprises that illegally produce, distribute and sell cannabis that ultimately exploits and abuses the legal cannabis market.

Wheatley Horticultural society unveils plans for arboretum

By Greg Coulter Wheatley community spirit continues to thrive and bounce back from last year’s explosion.

The members of the Wheatley Horticultural Society are just one of many groups that continue to improve the village and surrounding area.

They recently spearheaded a communi-

ty-wide initiative to improve the local park area gardens and continue with the main street’s flower and hanging baskets, faithfully watered

by Scott Makey.

Their latest project kicked off on Saturday, July 9 with a flag raising ceremony at the Wheatley Area Arena to celebrate the Year of the Garden.

The ceremony also included a tree planting to kick off the new Arboretum and Learning Trail located just north of the ball diamonds. After the ceremony, eight homeowners teamed with the group to open their properties for the first ever garden tour.

The tour was very successful with over 100 tickets sold and also featured refreshments and baked goods. Proceeds raised from the tour and a raffle will go directly to the purchase of trees, information signs, benches and workout equipment for the new learning trail.

President Donna Matier noted that Canada becomes the first country to celebrate the Year of the Garden, inviting Canadians to “Live the Garden Life” and discover the positive effects of gardening. Dignitaries on hand included Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Caniff, Ward 1 Councillor Melissa Harrigan, Genevieve Champagne, CK Active Transportation and Special Events co-ordinator,

Last week’s outage may prompt cell company changes In early 2014 — after being out of work for about a year and a half — we made the decision to take on a job that would require me to own a cellphone and know how to use it.

Prior to then, I had only dabbled with a used flip phone and a pay as you go plan.

Unlike most of our family and friends, our lives weren’t dependent upon smartphones at that time.

When we made the decision to each get a smartphone, Deb and I talked about the option of keeping our home phone.

At that point we decided to ditch the home phone and really haven’t had any regrets over that decision in the eight years since.

Last Friday’s Rogers outage was a challenge for any of us

who have Rogers accounts, but it also gave us time to reflect on the quiet that came with that.

After eight years of constantly looking at our phones, it was kind of nice to just set them down and go on with life without worrying about social media and other things that don’t really count in the grand scheme of things.

We were in the midst of a mini-vacation to the Thousand Islands when the outage occurred.

Initially, we felt a bit of panic because we had very little cash on us and already knew that debit purchases were affected pretty much everywhere.

Our only other concern was if anyone from back home was trying to contact us for an emergency.

We decided to go for a ride into the countryside and have a nice quiet day. Thankfully the satellite radio was still working so we threw on a classic rock station and enjoyed the drive.

We stopped for lunch and enjoyed the waterfront along the St. Lawrence River and then decided to find a theatre and see the new Elvis movie, which was fantastic.

We didn’t worry about how many likes our latest Facebook post had or even our email.

It was kind of like freedom for a few hours.

By dinner time, we had made our way to a bank machine and took out enough cash for dinner and a full tank of gas, just in case things didn’t return to normal in time.

First car ride was in a Packard

Last month, I invited readers of my column to tell me the make and year of the first car they rode in. Kent Weale, a good friend in Port Credit, tells us he was born late at

night on Sunday, January 16, 1944, at the Toronto General Hospital. Kent’s dad wanted their family doctor to deliver the baby and phoned him while the doctor was attending

a very swanky Saturday evening house party.

He immediately left the party and headed downtown to perform the delivery. He was the only doctor the staff could

By the time dinner was complete, we had some spotty service popping up and by the time morning arrived, we were on our way back home with text messages starting to flow into our phones from the day before.

As we had hoped, there was nothing urgent and we made our way back to the Sun Parlour without incident.

We still don’t regret no longer having a home phone and I assume we never will. It wouldn’t have made a difference for us on Friday anyway.

It was nice to be disconnected for the 12 hours that we were and brought a new appreciation for just living

Now, let’s hope that the downtime brings change to the landscape of the tele-communications monopoly that exists in Canada, which in turn may bring us some relief on our cell phone bills down the road.

Gas release reported at APEC 1 site in Wheatley At approximately 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, monitoring systems picked up a release of gas while crews were working at the APEC 1 site in Wheatley.

Work was stopped and samples of the gas were taken for analysis.

At approximately 5 p.m. the release of gas ended.

Workers were in the process of excavating

around the well in preparation for driving a larger conductor pipe over the existing well when the release occurred.

Chatham-Kent Fire Chief Chris Case confirmed that the safety plans guiding the operations worked as planned.

“Gas was collected and directed to the vent to be flared,” said Chief Case.

“At no time was there a risk to our community

located beyond the evacuation zone.”

Chief Case noted that a sufficient amount of gas was present for those nearby to detect a smell.

He noted that instruments detected 24 parts per billion in the atmosphere, less than one-hundredth of the amount that would represent a safety hazard.

Enbridge Gas Inc. has applied to the Ontario Energy Board for approval to construct approximately 31 kilometres of natural gas pipelines and ancillary facilities, in the Municipality of Chatham Kent, Municipality of Lakeshore, Town of Kingsville and Municipality of Leamington Learn more. Enbridge Gas Inc. has applied to the Ontario Energy Board for approval to construct two pipelines and associated ancillary facilities, which are collectively referred to as the Panhandle Regional Expansion Project. The first pipeline, called the Panhandle Loop, involves the construction of approximately 19 kilometres of 36-inch diameter steel pipeline that will originate at Enbridge Gas Inc.’s existing Dover Transmission Station in the Municipality of Chatham Kent and tie in to an existing pipeline at a new valve site station, in the Municipality of Lakeshore. Enbridge Gas Inc. proposes to start construction of the Panhandle Loop in the first quarter of 2023 and to place the pipeline in-service by November 2023. The second pipeline, called the Leamington Interconnect, involves the construction of approximately 12 kilometres of 16-inch steel pipeline and valve site station facilities in the Municipality of Lakeshore, the Town of Kingsville and the Municipality of Leamington. Enbridge Gas Inc. proposes to start construction of the Leamington Interconnect in the second quarter of 2024 and to place the project in-service by November 2024.

Enbridge Gas Inc. estimates the cost of both phases of the project to be $314.4 million and says that it will seek approval to recover the cost from ratepayers in a future rate application.

Enbridge Gas Inc. is also asking the Ontario Energy Board to approve the form of agreement it offers to landowners to use their land for routing or construction of the proposed pipelines.

THE ONTARIO ENERGY BOARD WILL HOLD A PUBLIC HEARING The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) will hold a public hearing to consider Enbridge Gas’s application.

During the hearing, which could be an oral or written hearing, we will question Enbridge Gas on the case. We will also hear questions and arguments from individual consumers, municipalities and others whose interests would be affected. At the end of this hearing, the OEB will decide whether to approve the application.

As part of its review of this application, the OEB will assess Enbridge Gas’s compliance with the OEB’s Environmental Guidelines for the Location, Construction and Operation of Hydrocarbon Pipelines and Facilities in Ontario.

The OEB will also assess whether the duty to consult with Indigenous Communities potentially affected by the proposed pipelines has been discharged with respect to the application.

SWOC kids’ fishing derby draws large crowd at harbour

Club President Dan Reive was ecstatic with the support of the community and sponsors of the event. Shoreline Association raises alarm with feds, province over Hillman Marsh

By Mark Ribble A letter from the Leamington Shoreline Association to the provincial and federal governments is aimed at raising awareness to the fragile shoreline surrounding Hillman Marsh and the eastern coast of Point Pelee National Park.

The report, sent to Premier Doug Ford, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and numerous other government ministers, was released to the media on Tuesday and outlines the hazardous conditions along the Hillman Marsh Conservation Area.

“We would like to bring to your attention a dangerous situation that currently exists in Leamington, Ontario’s Point Pelee Peninsula,” says the letter.

An attachment contained overhead photos of the area and how the shoreline has changed over the years, with the current breach in the barrier beach area showing prominently.

“Left unchecked, it will result in catastrophic flooding and the potential loss of life to those living on Leamington’s Point Pelee Peninsula,” said the letter. “Over 500 homes and businesses, 7,500 acres of farmland (including 250 acres of Indigenous property), 850 acres of wetland and 3,800 acres of national park land are at risk.”

In November 2021, the Municipality of Leamington, with the support of the Essex Region Conservation Authority, submitted an $18 million

proposal to the Federal Government Disaster Mitigation and Adaption Fund (DMAF) to protect and preserve the area.

The letter and report are in support of Leamington’s bid for funding to mitigate the issue.

“On behalf of those affected by this situation, we appeal to those with influence and authority to expedite the approval of this proposal for the safety of the community, now, and for the future,” said Wayne King, President of the Leamington Shoreline Association.

King has been sounding the alarm on the issue for the past few years, supporting his claims with aerial photos that show the extent of the damage done by erosion and wave action.

The report outlines the history of the area and the loss of approximately 80 per cent of the natural vegetation and habitat over the course of several years.

In the mid-1980s, the Essex Region Conservation Authority and Ducks Unlimited constructed two large water level-maintained cells that have successfully restored a small portion of natural habitat. Ducks Unlimited completed a major maintenance project last year that restored the integrity of the cell’s protective berms.

In the spring of 2018, a combination of high lake levels and gale force easterly winds all but destroyed the barrier beach at the marsh, taking with it hundreds of mature trees. This allowed the marsh to open up into Lake Erie and the lake

waves to reach the berm on Road 1 — the only thing separating farms and residences from being engulfed by Lake Erie.

Elsie Maria Aasen September 15, 1942 – July 7, 2022

It is with great sadness that we lost our dear, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Elsie Maria Aasen. She leaves behind her husband of 57+ years, Lionel, and sons Brian and Jeffrey, daughter-in-law Corrie, and two grandchildren, Rianna and Sidnie.

Elsie has joined her parents Dmytro (1981) and Christina (2003) Welygan and oldest brother Paul (1995). She leaves behind her brother Pete (Alice), sister Sally (late Larry), brother John (Gail), brother-in-law Clarence (Gail), and sisters-in-law Violet (late Leon) and Jeanette (late Armand), along with 12 nephews and nieces.

Elsie was born at Hudson Bay Junction, Saskatchewan, where she grew up on the family farm and attended school in Erwood, then high school in Hudson Bay. After graduation she worked at BNS until getting married in 1964 when she moved to Saskatoon. She also worked at BMO and a school cafeteria.

With the birth of our two sons, she became a fulltime mother until the boys were in senior school. Many moves occurred in Manitoba and Saskatchewan over the first 24 years of married life, until arriving in Leamington at which time she worked at Zellers for 17 years. During this time, she made many friends with whom she worked with, as well as the many customers.

Elsie was an avid gardener and enjoyed working outside.

She also spent and enjoyed time cooking and baking. Her blueberry coffee cake and pecan pies were always a big hit when served. She enjoyed playing bridge, not only at the Half Century Club on a regular basis but also with the Ruthven Couples and Ladies Clubs. She spared in a few other clubs and was always ready to have an evening game with coffee and desert with friends.

Elsie enjoyed attending many of her granddaughter’s softball games, travelling to Minneapolis, Kansas City, Toronto and Winnipeg, to mention a few. She also came to enjoy watching the Blue Jays games. She very much enjoyed watching and following curling on TV, having curled for a few years.

The family would like to thank the staff at Erie Shores Hospice, St. Elizabeth Health Care and Erie Shores HealthCare for their continued kind and compassionate care for Elsie.

Memorial visiting will take place on Thursday, July 14, 2022 at Reid Funeral Home, 14 Russell Street, Leamington (519-326-2631) from 10 a.m. until time of memorial service at 11 a.m.

Hudson Bay catamaran launched in Wheatley A new whale watching boat has launched at Wheatley Harbour and will make its way to Churchill, Manitoba, once sea trials are complete.

Hike Metal was contacted with a request in 2019 to have a look at the vessel, as the original builders had maxed out their shop capacity to complete the project.

The vessel was taken apart and shipped from Parry Sound to Wheatley, where the Hike Metal experts inspected, repaired and modified the boat to specifications.

Eight-week lane closure on Seacliff Dr. East Contractors working on behalf of the Municipality of Leamington will be undertaking road reconstruction and storm sewer installation on Seacliff Drive East. The work started Monday, July 11.

During construction, Seacliff Drive East, from Cherry Lane to Seneca Road, will be reduced to a single lane of traffic for approximately eight weeks. Motorists should expect delays and are

The Bridge’s Take Your Shot bursary competition gives away thousands The Bridge Youth Resource Centre in Leamington, through its Take your Shot bursary competition, gave away almost $50,000 in prize money to support local students in their post-secondary education goals. This year’s winners were as follows: UE Enclosures Post-Secondary Bursary: Maria Valda, top prize $20,000; Krista Abdel Sater, runner-up $1,000.

Mexican Consul moving on

Vanessa Calva Ruiz, the Consul of Mexico, who has been in Leamington for the past year, has been appointed to a new post.

In a letter released to the Sun on Monday, July 11, Consul Calva Ruiz expressed her gratitude to the people of Leamington during her tenure here.

“I want to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude for all of the support during my tenure here as Consul of

Mexico in Leamington,” she said. “Since my arrival in July 2021, it has been my privilege to build and strengthen bonds between Mexico and this region.”

She has been appointed as the new Director for the Office of Consular Protection and Strategic Planning. A new Consul for Leamington will be named soon.

By C. Scott Holland Since the late 1920s, Leamington has been known as the Tomato Capitol of Canada and for several decades boasted that it was the Tomato Capitol of the World.

Tomatoes had been grown in this area since the 1880s and became a popular crop in 1910 when the H.J. Heinz Co. of Canada began producing ketchup at their nearby, newly formed Canadian factory.

By the late 1950s, Leamington sought to have a permanent tourist booth to replace a rather small, portable one. An idea was conceived by the Leamington Chamber of Commerce to create a booth resembling a tomato.

Late in 1959, the H.J. Heinz Co and its engineers formally stated that they would support the project and transform the idea into reality by creating the large tourist booth they envisioned.

However, full approval and a site for it did not come until a year later.

A small, triangular section of property on the west side of, and adjacent to the town’s Federal Building (which had housed Leamington’s original Post Office from 1911 to 1959 and later its Customs Office) was the site chosen. It was a natural spot where a majority of vehicles coming to town along Highway 3 (from Windsor and Detroit) would spot the unique structure.

The bright red tomato shaped booth, adorned with a green stem on its top, would become an icon and popular tourist stop for photographs. Upon its completion, it measured 14 feet high and about 20 feet in diameter. Its interior was wood with a fiberglass outside.

At its opening in May 1961, Leamington’s own Frank T. Sherk, who was president of the H. J. Heinz Co. and the Canadian Tourist Association, along with Canadian Chamber of Commerce president Joseph Jeffery, cut the ribbon to officially open the information booth.

Initially its hours of operation were 9 am to 7 pm but by the 1970s its hours were shortened to 10 am to 4 pm.

Since its opening on Monday, May 8, 1961, it has undergone numerous facelifts and repairs. The grounds around it have undergone numerous transformations as well.

Volunteers helped operate the booth and for a number of years via government funding helped provide summer jobs for students. Talbot Trail senior golfers swinging summer away

By Bob McLean Forty-eight Talbot Trail senior golf league members participated on July 5. The sky was a bit overcast, but a gentle breeze made for a good golfing day.

In the 50-69y division, Kreug continued his masterful play shooting a 39.

He nipped Arkey’s excellent 40 and the terrific 41s shot by Gerry Van Deven and Nasher. Ed Fraser earned a nifty 50.

The largest group, the 7079y, also produced some outstanding results. Dutchy earned an excellent 39, but he was closely followed

by Chopper’s terrific 41.

Al Matthews came in with a magnificent 42.

Other commendable results: BW 44; Schmidty, Chuck McKenzie, Doug Langlois and Bobo 45s; Scoop 46; Ray la Pierre 47; Dave Dent and Gary Hillier 48s; and Ray Foster 49.

In the 80-85y division, Joe Vrtel’s awesome 41 stood out. Other very commendable results of 55 or less came from these players: Tom Sasso nifty 50; Ron McCracken and Walter Balsam 51s; Conrad Babkirk and Neil Adamson 52s. Andy Orsini had a very satisfying round.

The closest to the pin on #9 provided some extra excitement. Ron Hillier’s scintillating shot ended up a mere 24 inches from the cup. It looked to be a sure winner. However, Al Matthews playing in the group behind Ron’s fired a dazzling shot really close to the pin. An exact measurement gave Ron the win by two inches.

Dave Chambers didn’t require a measuring tape as he drained a monstrous 43 footer to win the LP on #2!

The Super Seniors continue to inspire fellow league members. Tom Hyatt played brilliantly to shoot a 47 off the silver tees. He was closely followed by the excellent nifty 50 results of Bill Edwards and Bob Freure. Gary Wilson played well.

Gold division results: Gerry Becigneul’s masterful 45. Other impressive results: Dave La Bonte 47, Erle Nash 52.

Word has it that Bummy had a very successful surgery, and members hope to see him back in future weeks.

The league’s next scramble will be on July 19.

SOL LEAMINGTON CUP WINNERS

The 2022 edition of the Sol Leam Cup was recently completed at Erie Shores Golf Course. Shoreline Tours is now the new sponsor for the Sol Leam Cup. This year, with the new sponsor comes a new look. All players wear either white or black with their grey golf shirts, so the group decided new team names were needed – Team White and Team Black. This year’s competition started a little slow for Team White, but on day four they came back to within one point of nearly taking home the cup. Team Black finally managed to squeak out the win with a 13-12 point victory. Kingsville’s 18-Hole Ladies’ League

By Rosalind Knight The Kingsville 18-Hole Ladies Golf League hosted its Invitational on July 5 with a better ball format.

Congratulations to the tournament committee Becky Glidden, Fran Wasyliniuk, Jean Page, Laurie Kovacs, Shirley Jacuzzi, Maria Rocca and Kathy Soulliere. They put in many hours to organize a wonderful event for the 76 participants who enjoyed not only the beautiful course (thanks to Paul Lemieux and his grounds crew), but also a delicious lunch/dinner (kudos to Marla Funkenhauser-Wip-

er and chef Lori Dupuis).

Many of league members and area businesses also donated raffle prizes and gave other gifts to help make the day a success.

Congratulations to the low gross winners for the field, Patty Marcus and Kim Griffin, and to low net team for the field, Lucille Kraus and Joanne Rowlandson.

One memorable game played on June 14 was the final day of the Net Eclectic game. Players were able to improve on their scores earned the week before on the Red

and White courses. The weather was so hot, the stress of competition so palpable, that one electric cart even turned tail on its own, landing wheels up in a ravine behind the green two holes over (not mentioning names, Pam).

Here are the top players in each flight: Silver: Joanne Rowlandson, 68; Wali Forster and Shirley Jacuzzi, each tied with 71. Flight A: Jean Page, 67; Martha Leadman, 71; Mary Jo Laforet, 72. Flight B: Lucille Kraus, 66; Rosalind Knight, 75; Pam Skillings, 78. Flight C: Maureen Nefs, 64;

Laurie Kovacs, 70; Maria Rocca, 74. Flight D: Fran Wasyliniuk and Sue Brennan, tied with 66; Georgina Bruce-Raycroft, 70.

Finally, the league has met the halfway point of the Classic Match Play.

Thanks to this year’s convenors Joanne Rowlandson and Lucille Kraus, members have had timely up-to-date information on the standings at the end of Round 1. The intrepid team of Shirley Jacuzzi and Maureen Nefs is currently leading the pack, which, of course, will be nipping at heels every Thursday.

Hiya, I’m Kane! I’m a Bulldog mix weighing 72lbs. I am a super excitable, energetic, and silly guy looking for my forever home! You see, I have a bit of a sad story if you will. Way back when in my old home, I wasn’t always cared for as well as I should have been... Because of this, I am looking for a particular household that is calm and predictable and there isn’t any kind of chaos. I hate seeing people fight or yell as it scares me a lot, so that’s why I just want a calm and safe household that I can relax in (I mean, I ain’t a young dog. I’m an older dude that just wants a chill zone). I will need help with some training for some things. I tend to pull a lot on leash, and like to “mouth off” a lot to other dogs (I just get so overstimulated I can’t help myself and want to scream helllllllo there!!). I do seem pretty playful with dogs, but I do come on strong so it would need to be a pal that can handle a hyper guy like me. I need a home with a fenced yard and an adopter that is willing to help guide me. I am a friendly boy with a loyal and loving personality. I know I will make my person very happy and very lucky.

12U LAKERS WIN THIRD TOURNAMENT

11U LAKERS TAKE CLASSIC

There were 46 Erie Shores Senior Men’s League golfers who played on July 4.

The winning team, with a score of 127, was Peter Harb, Garth Dennerley, Matt Dick and Jim Dueckman. In second place at 130 were Ed Schachoskoy, Alden Warner, Ken Luxford and Wayne Oehlerking.

Third place, also at 130 but placed by retro-

The longest putt on #5 was made by Cam McKay and on #15 Ed Schachoskoy.

The three low nets for the day were Cam McKay, Ken Luxford and Dan Musuronchon, all at 66.

Jerry Mallard had low round at 79, followed

by Matt Dick and Frank Gow, 80. Tom Miehl also gets honorable mention with his 81.

Birdies were scarce this day with only five being made. Ron Tiessen made his on #1, Cam McKay #5, Steffan Kowal # 7, Tom Miehl # 11 and Dan Musuronchon #16.

The 12U Lakers continued their strong season by making it three for three in tournament play. They took home top prize in the 6th Annual London Talons Tournament this past weekend. The tournament hosted 14 teams. The boys defeated LaSalle in the quarter-finals, Stratford in the semi-finals, and a very strong St. Thomas team in the final. U13 Lightning wins two Sun County Soccer has begun and the U13 Leamington Lightning team has started the season off with two wins.

The first win was against an inexperienced Harrow team.

Leamington moved the ball around efficiently and shot when the opportunities arose. The result was a 10-0 game.

Seven different players scored. Dario Verissimo put in three, Chris Raffoul two, and Sonny Coppola, Jaden Daraiche, Dylan Mellow, Sebastian Belanger and Charlie Ketler each scored once.

The second game was against a very good Kingsville team. At one point Kingsville held a 3-1 lead.

Leamington had to push back hard and the result was four goals in the second half.

The defense tightened up their play and Steve Belanger made a few spectacular saves to allow Leamington to win 5-3.

Goal scorers were Muhammed Alacatiy with two, and Dario Verissimo, Charlie Ketler and Dylan Mellow with one each.

‘Dreams’ come true for local umpire in Cooperstown

stown, New York, as part of the Cooperstown Dreams Park American Youth Baseball Tournament.

Touted as the greatest tournament in America, the event hosts hundreds of 12-and-under teams from across the world, who come to Cooperstown to take part in a ‘big league’ experience.

The tournament has been running since 1996 and features many alumni who have went on to play Major League Baseball.

O’Neil was introduced to the tournament by a fellow local umpire and decided to apply back in January.

It wasn’t long before he got the call to head to Cooperstown.

“I was thrilled to be chosen,” he says. “It’s an incredible experience.”

Each week is a different tournament involving 64 teams, which O’Neil says was 104 teams prior to COVID. “They’ve cut back a little,” he says. “It’s a real chance for kids to live out their major league

dreams.”

There are 26 diamonds in the 76-acre facility — all enclosed — with 200-foot fences on each. The whole complex is designed like major league ball parks to give the kids the feel of playing in the majors.

And it’s not just for elite teams. O’Neil said he saw a variety of skills.

“There were some really good teams and some really bad teams,” he said. “It’s all about giving the kids the big league experience.”

Players are given two sets of uniforms and each night they turn them in to get washed.

“They deliver the clean

uniforms back to the kids every morning at 6 am,” said O’Neil.

The players stay in barracks and dine in a huge dining tent.

As for the umpires, they are put up in bunkhouses, which gives them a chance to meet each other and make new friends.

Each week, the umpires are individually sponsored by one of the teams and O’Neil’s teams were from Florida, Texas and North Carolina.

“I hung out with the parents and made a lot of new friends,” he said.

During the daytime, O’Neil umpired ball games and said he learned

a lot from his American counterparts.

Umpires are evaluated during each game and any mistakes you might make are discussed with you after the final out.

“Not that umpires ever make mistakes,” he joked.

He also had some down time to visit the historic Cooperstown area, and being a history buff was intrigued by all of it.

Asked if he would do it again, he simply replied, “I’ll absolutely go back next year. I learned a lot, held my own and represented Essex County proudly.”

As technologies improve, greenhouses will become even more efficient and productive by improving on their energy and water usage. The majority of greenhouses already utilize water recycling systems, and many farms have incorporated cleaner energy sources such as solar and wind.

However, there is more to do. Our growers take pride in what they do and together we look forward to contributing to our province’s plan to build a post-pandemic world and economy that we will all benefit from and be proud of.
