The site chosen was the south side lo cation. When finished, the Lyric Theatre was 120 feet in width. Inside it featured 27 rows of seats that were 20 inches wide and each row had 20 seats in it. The gal lery had room for another 100 patrons. Total capacity was 650.

Increased competition – first from the Patricia Theatre in the 1910s and then from “talking movies” shown at the Capital Theatre in the late 1920s and 1930s – made it difficult for the Lyric to draw the large crowds it had in its early years.

Submarine cycling - Ditches rose foot after foot following the Thursday evening rainfall and these young lads wasted no time inventing a new game, “submarine cycling”. If nothing else, it’s a quick way to wash a ten-speed bicycle!

It was erected on the south side of Tal bot St. West across from where the Duf ferin Hotel (and previously the Huffman Hotel) had stood. It had two owners: Joseph Henry, a successful farmer and public speaker, and his partner nephew Gerald Deming.

For approximately 30 years, the Lyric Theatre was one of Leamington’s earli est and top entertainment destinations.

They debated where it would be built. Site choices included a portion of the lot on the north side of Talbot, the corner of Albert and Talbot St. West where the original Joseph S. Robinson house sat –later Dr. Riel Hillier’s office in 1909 – or a site opposite the Huffman Hotel and a portion of the land on which the two earlier taverns had been.

Eventually, manager Sam French would have the heat system changed to one supplied by steam and thus have the facility warmer for the winter months.

The boats could be taken through the placid canal into the rougher waters of Lake Erie. This photograph of an unidentiﬁed family, standing outside the Cedar Beach Drug Store, was taken in the late 1940s or early 1950s.

Its architect and main contractor was William Link. While local tradesmen helped build this entertainment palace,

many of its interior materials came from Windsor, Toronto and Detroit.

In 1938, it ceased operations and lat er that year two businesses took over its lower portion. Bill White opened his White Cigar Store (which was still in business in the late 1960s as White’s Pool Room) and Knight’s Barber Shop. Today a small portion of the original building remains, although greatly al tered. Today, two businesses thrive at the location — Mastronardi’s Barber Shop and the Italian grocery store.

The Lyric Theatre opened on July 22, 1909 with 2,000 seeking admission.

With four sons who all played hockey, Mrs. Pep was a regular at the old Leamington Arena. She then worked at the Kinsmen Kanteen at the arena for over 25 years, becoming a second mother to thousands of young boys and girls who passed through. Upon her retirement from the Kanteen, she started to billet players from the Leamington Flyers Junior B team, gaining more “sons” along the way. She also served on the executive board of the Leamington Flyers.

Proud Dad of Brad Drewitt (Nadine) and Brian Drewitt (Roza). Loving Grandpa of Chad and Curtis Drewitt and baby-tobe Sophia. He will be missed by his fur baby Mindy. Predeceased by both of his parents in 1957, Arthur and Muriel, and his sister Deanna Maddox (2012). Survived by his brother Bud Drewitt (Louise). Don will also be remembered by his extended Greene family, and many nieces and nephews.

He was also a huge supporter of the Leamington Flyers and the Wheatley Sharks, volunteering with them for many years. His sarcasm and sense of humour will be missed by many of his caregivers (Samantha, Angela, Jamie and Jen) who we can’t thank enough. Also special thanks to Don’s neighbours and friends for all of their support.

Don spent 30 years in the Leamington community serving as a firefighter. He was known by many in the community as the former owner and operator of Sun Parlor Locksmiths.

Give that farm vehicle space as some ve hicles may not be able to pull off the road due to equipment weight or shoulder issues.

• Watch out for left turns - Not all farm vehicles have turn signals, watch for farmers signalling a turn using the same hand signals as a cyclist. Be aware that farmers with long or wide farming equipment sometimes need to make a wide turn. If a tractor swings to the right, be careful, it may be starting a left turn.

Mom was fastidious and precise in all that she did, from her early years working at the Town of Leamington, to her later years at the Leamington Post and News until her retirement. She was meticulous in her planning of wonderful family celebrations where the meals were bountiful and the table settings exquisite. Through her loving and generous ways, she taught us the importance of hard work, love, kindness, and above all, respect for others. She took great pride in her children and grandchildren and was always there to lend an ear and offer advice. She had a keen sense of humour and a quick wit. Known affectionately as “The Queen”, mom was a keen “Royal watcher” and could often be heard posing the question “What would the Queen do?” Endless conversations were had discussing the current state of the Firm. She was ever present in our lives and we will miss her dearly.

Our family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to all involved in her medical support over the past few weeks.

Hundreds of Monarch butterflies were observed roosting high in the tree branches at the top of Seacliff Park this past weekend. The Monarch migration usually starts the end of Au gust and runs through until mid-October, depending on weather. Point Pelee National Park is a popular location for the colourful butterflies which are often seen at the tip prior to crossing the lake. The park posts daily monarch migration updates on its Facebook page.

Right now, a post pandemic recovery is at the very top of my list. The two biggest related issues are affordability, and safety. The pandemic has been fi nancially devastating for so many of our residents, yet property taxes just keep going up. On top of that we’re not seeing a return from our tax dollars as over $100 million just sits in reserve collecting dust. As a result, our police are underfunded and people don’t feel safe anymore. As Mayor I would see housing affordability tackled head on, along with the issue of security.

We as a com munity have so much to offer! We are surrounded by the incredible Lake Erie, are home to a beautiful ma rina and a thriving greenhouse industry. Additionally, we are home to a hardworking farming community and several arts and cultural amenities.

I was born in Santiago, Chile, and lived there until 1982 when I came to Canada as a political refugee. I am recog nized by the Chilean Govern ment as a victim of torture. I am a community advocate and paralegal licensed by the Law Society of Ontario, and my strong sense of social jus tice has led me to always pro viding a significant portion of my services for free to community members who cannot afford legal fees. God has gifted me my wonderful spouse and three beautiful daughters, and for over a decade, I’ve been in love with this city.

As a lifelong resident of Leamington with over 25 years of experience running a farm, and having sat on the board of NGO’s like OGVG, I understand how to run a corporation from an operational, lo gistical and financial standpoint. Aside from that, I am a father of 4 beautiful children who have made me an expert problem solver at home as well. Now more than ever, Leamington needs a problem solv er who can address our main issues such as hous ing affordability and security.

Environmental Sustainability: Develop a plan of action for the Lake Erie Shoreline and adjacent wetlands., Improve Active Transportation infrastructure, Accelerate sewer separation.Economic Development: Implement the Uptown Master Plan and the Waterfront Master Plan, Promote ‘Ecotour ism’, Maximize spin-offs from the greenhouse industry. Onearises.issue that I would like to work on would be to look for money from upper levels of government for north sewer trunk lines, which would create a domino effect. Having these sewer lines would benefit not only clean water but the environment as well. Our greenhouse industry is booming and they need a place for their workers to live. As of now, the Min istry of Environment will not allow new bunkhouses on these farms, forcing the farmers to buy up houses in town. If this project goes through, it will free up affordable housing within our community.

I truly believe that Leamington is an incredible town to raise your family, and I hope to work with residents of all ages to restore a sense of community across generations.

In response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, I secured Federal and Provincial funding, ensuring that the older adult community stayed connected and that the Cen tre remained viable and able to re-open as soon as restrictions were lifted.

Raised in Windsor, Dave Met calfe became an airline-pilot in the 70’s, living in the Arctic, and across Canada. Dave re tired early as a Captain from Air Canada enabling him to join Mission Aviation Fellowship, in Papua-New-Guinea as a pi lot-missionary and from there to teaching aviation at Prairie Bible College in Alberta. Eventually, Dave Metcalfe relocated to Leamington to be nearer to family in 2017.

I have been witnessing Leamington deteriorate over the years that I have lived here. I see crime increas ing, substance abuse and mental illnesses that are un supported and causing too many deaths, poverty be coming a chronic issue, a housing crisis that needs to be addressed, a homeless population that is growing and is desperate for solutions, and small businesses struggling to survive. Each and every one of these is sues as well as every person, every resident of Leam ington that is falling through the cracks should be at the top of the list.

There is a need to streamline the bureaucracy and cut the red tape. People often express their frustrations to me about their difficulties in receiving building permits, and other services in a timely manner.

Sitting on the Leamington Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors for seven years, two as President, the Board at The Bank Theatre, including two as Pres ident, and the marketing committee at Erie Shores Health Foundation, Corey has demonstrated expe rience in finding balance to arrive at solutions in the best interest of all parties. Travelling to Queen’s Park to advocate for county-wide broadband, public trans portation and the creation of an Agricultural Centre of Excellence in Leamington, he has a proven record of working with stakeholders to find optimal outcomes for the municipality.

MEET THE LEAMINGTON COUNCIL CANDIDATES

I am really grateful for the many people who have shown their trust in me and nominat ed me for council. My wife and I moved to Leamington to raise our children in a place where they could thrive and grow. I grew up on a farm doing field work such as picking cucum bers, asparagus, strawberries, raspberries, and apples etc. I have managed cattle raising operations and feedlots and cash crop operations such as wheat, soybeans and corn. Currently I work in the distribution sector for vegetables in Leamington. Hobbies include read ing, chess, golf, volleyball, and camping.

In my decades in aviation, I have learned to develop effective communication strategies and to collaborate in decision making in a team environment, where lives are at stake! I have an understanding of the nature of bureaucratic processes, and an understanding of the reality that sometimes bureaucracies become barriers to moving things forward in a time sensitive but com passionate manor.

The pillars of Corey’s campaign include a safe, clean and vibrant uptown with increased police presence in areas of crime. Attracting doctors to live and practice in Leamington is a must to reduce wait times and over capacities at the hospital. Inducing developers to build affordable housing and easing the permit process is key. With the waterfront development plan already in place, development must be done responsibly consid ering input from the public. Continued funding for arts and culture along with marketing Leamington to young families, tourists and investors, is a priority as well as supporting social programs for guest workers.

Affordable housing is becoming problematic. The Municipality should look to explore options so as to stimulate and expedite building. Why are there not more ADUs (Auxiliary-Housing-Units) being encour aged? There is an increasing visible presence of homeless people in our community. The Municipality should advocate for money to address this issue rather than support issues that might be of questionable val ue to our community.

I believe in integrity first above all else. I believe that with hard work and unity we can ensure cur rent and future residents will find Leamington even more enjoyable. I have always had a servant’s heart and demonstrated leadership in many different roles within the community. I generally have enjoyed serv ing the community behind the scenes and am ex cited to change that. I offer a new voice, one that has a vested interest in the community working well into the future for our children’s sake. I think through problems logically and communicate extremely well. I am decisive in my actions.

My top focus will be ensuring that Leamington works for the residents of Leamington first. 5 years ago, I heard the same problems I hear about today and that should never be. We don’t have enough housing, infrastructure to handle new housing, in dustrial areas with space available, crime and home lessness is increasing. The services such as police and fire are struggling to deal with a growing pop ulation and the foundations of the municipality are starting to crack. I will focus on making the founda tional functions of the municipality work. Town Hall is not operating to address the basic functions.

I believe it is a priority to ensure that the most vulner able populations have equal access to community re sources and to invest in affordable housing solutions. I am prepared to lead decisions for the betterment of all.

I have been a resident of Leamington my whole life, the only time spent away was when I was studying politics at the University of Wind sor, and returning soon after I had achieved my Masters degree. This is the town my grandparents came to in the mid 1950’s to build a life, and grow the roots of a new fami ly. It is my home, and I plan to build my future here asForwell.many of my generation, we were told that one day we would need to make our own decisions, and take responsibility for our own future. Current ly, of the seven official elected positions, none rep resent my age demographic. The young families looking for a start. The people looking to grow their own roots in the community. I think it is time we have a seat at the table.

• I feel the most important is sue is guaranteeing a start date for the North trunk sewer project. Many aren’t aware how this proj ect will affect them, providing a sewer to the north helps solve our sewer capacity issues the farms in the north face when it comes to more on farm living accommodations. Maybe the most important factor with this project is the housing that opens up in the urban area. If farms no longer require homes uptown, it would help solve some of our affordable housing issues. Plus, it will open up more opportunities for other industries to build or expand in the north. Ryder Cup semi-finalists from Kingsville Golf

The Kingsville Golf Club Ryder Cup team had a very successful season. The Ryder Cup is a series of matches with an eight-man team representing various golf courses in Ontario.

These watch ers will call the Holiday Beach Conservation Area home as they take in a grand spectacle: tens of thousands of hawks and raptors flying overhead on their annual journey to nesting grounds in the south.Inrecognition of the amazing sight, Essex Re gion Conservation will host the 2022 Festival of Hawks.
