Friends of the Earth recognition
LEAMINGTON – Gore Hill Public School’s Extreme Ecoteam honoured three students as Friends of the Earth. These girls demonstrated responsible environmental stewardship. Leamington Marina user fees decreased By Bryan Jessop
Boaters making a quick stop in Leamington will be able to save a few dollars when docking at the municipality’s marina. Council voted unanimously in favour of an amendment to Bylaw #55-19, allowing ‘transient mooring’ of three hours or less at Leamington Municipal Marina to be done so free of charge. Previously, under Schedule B of the bylaw, transient mooring for up to three hours per vessel included a charge of $21. “Administration can use this as a means to promote Leamington as a destination,” explained manager of recreation Terry Symons. “The change to fees will have little effect on revenue.” During his presentation, Symons also noted to members of council that the waiving of boater fees for visits of three hours or less will compliment the municipality’s ongoing strategy to bolster tourism in the area. The report also noted that the adjustment to fees could draw boaters who were not originally intending to visit the area to both visit and support Leamington’s uptown and dock at the marina overnight. Boaters who moor at the marina for more than three hours but not overnight pay a ‘day’ fee of $21. The overnight rate is $2.25 per foot of the docked vessel per day. Leamington council approved of the 2020 fee schedule in early October of 2019 through Bylaw #55-19. Amendments to the bylaw were made shortly afterwards, as fee adjustments were required.
