Prescribed fires planned at Point Pelee Park

SUN, MAR. 8 at 2 AM

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME BEGINS

LEAMINGTON – Parks Canada plans to conduct prescribed fires at Point Pelee National Park between March 2 and April 15 when conditions are favourable. Prescribed fires contribute to the restoration of Point Pelee National Park’s globally rare savannah ecosystem by releasing nutrients, reducing the number of exotic plants, preventing the spread of invading shrubs and trees, encouraging native seed germination, and improving habitat for species at risk. This prescribed fire program is an important part of the park’s Lake Erie Sand Spit Savannah restoration project. Prescribed fires planned for 2020 will be located in Anders Field (5 hectares), DeLaurier (1.1 hectares), Cactus Field (3.07 hectares), Sleepy Hollow (1.97 hectares), and along the southern portion of the western shoreline (2.20 hectares).

Safety is of the upmost importance for Parks Canada. Point Pelee National Park will remain open to visitors during the prescribed fires; however, some areas will be closed for short periods of time to ensure the safety of visitors and team members. The prescribed fires will only be initiated when the environmental and weather conditions are suitable. Extensive planning and careful execution will ensure that the prescribed fires are controlled and contained within predetermined boundaries. Some smoke will be present and visible, but team members will monitor wind conditions and direct smoke away from publicly used areas to the extent possible. Parks Canada is a leader in conservation. Fire is an important natural process in restoring healthy, resilient ecosystems that support a variety of birds, butterflies, and species at risk which depend on open, sunny savannah habitat to survive.

Local Air Cadets place third at marksmanship competition

LEAMINGTON – On Saturday, Feb. 29 the 535 Air Cadet Squadron from Leamington participated in the RSU Cadet Zone 1 Marksmanship Competition in Windsor and earned third place out of 13 teams. Coach CI Goodall and CI Green are very proud of their team as their hard work and determination has paid off. Marksmanship is one of the most popular cadet training activities. Cadet marksmanship had its roots in familiarization training with the Canadian Forces. Its current focus, however, is on teaching cadets the proper use and safe handling of firearms for recreational purposes only. The marksmanship program has been specifically designed for youth and is based on Olympic-style competition. Self-confidence, acceptance of responsibility and sports etiquette are just some of the life skills acquired from the training. A healthy respect for firearms, the development of proficient use of rifles for sport and recreational purposes, and an improvement in self-discipline are additional benefits. Cadets use the Daisy 853C air rifle that fires a .177 calibre pellet and has a round aperture sight. Because of the low muzzle velocity, the Daisy 853C is not classified as a firearm under federal gun legislation. The squadron holds practice once a week at their onsite range.

Banded Goose serving at Marina music

LEAMINGTON – For the second year in a row, thirsty and hungry music goers along Leamington’s waterfront will be served by a Kingsville-based brewing company. Leamington Council voted in favour of bringing The Banded Goose Brewing Company on board to provide food and beverages to guests attending the upcoming 2020 season of Music at the Marina, following a successful one-year pilot project at the Leamington Municipal Marina in the fall and summer of 2019. Although the initial service last year was well received, The Grove Brewing Corporation indicated that it would not continue with the Marina’s food and beverage programming during musical events for 2020 due to a shift in the business’s direction. Attendance to most events were estimated to range from 100 to 300 patrons. The Banded Goose has offered to operate through the hours of 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. or if required, 11 p.m.

Phase 2 of Golfwood Estates approved

LEAMINGTON – Leamington Council approved Phase 2 of the Golfwood Estates subdivision on Robson Road, which will add 40 single detached dwelling lots. The development of Golfwood Estates dates back to 2006 when it was given approval for the development of 217 single detached dwelling lots and 75 townhouse lots over five phases of development. This plan was extended until 2015. Phase 1 received approval and commenced construction in 2015. Phase 2 of the subdivision plan seeks to create 40 single dwelling lots, which were previously approved in 2015. A notice of the public

meeting was published and public notices were sent to neighbouring property owners. The Municipality received no response from members of the public. The entire property is an 83-acre parcel located on the north side of Robson Road with additional frontage on Bevel Line Road. The development is located immediately west of Erie Shores Golf and Country Club. Paul Barnable, Director of Community and Development Services, presented the Phase 2 draft plan of development to Council on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Upon receipt of comments from the Municipality, the County will issue a

decision to ‘refuse’ or ‘draft approve’ the proposed subdivision plan. There is a 20day appeal period after draft approval has been issued. If the plan is approved by the County, the owner will be required to return to the Municipality to have the Holding Symbol removed from the zoning of the subject lands before building permits will be issued. Councillor Paul Tiessen and a member of the public asked about access to the subdivision. “Will the road eventually exit out to the Bevel Line?” asked Tiessen. Barnable responded that it he believed that it did. Council passed the report.

1921 Brock Six built in Amherstburg

By 1912, Windsor was quickly becoming the automotive capital of Canada. But several small Ontario towns were hoping to cash in on the rapidly growing popularity of self-propelled vehicles. One such town was Amherstburg. In late 1911, a group of Detroit promoters had joined with some like-minded people in Windsor to build a large five-passenger touring car that could easily be converted into a pickup truck, and they were looking for a place to build a factory to get their car into production. On Thursday, March 28, 1912, the Detroit promoters with some Windsor friends arrived in Amherstburg in a “fine new convertible car” and began promoting their idea to business people, politicians and the local paper, the Amherstburg Echo, which immediately embraced the idea in an editorial on March 29: “It is just the thing for the small merchant, the contractor, the travelling salesman who has a small load of trunks or samples, and best of all for farmers who can-

not afford a truck and touring car both.” Amherstburg decided to take the plunge. I’m not an ice fisherman

The mild winter has countless ice fishing enthusiasts lamenting their lack of recreation this past couple of months. I have noticed a few hardy souls on Facebook out fishing on harbour ice near Lake St. Clair, but it’s something that I wouldn’t do. My experience with ice fishing goes back to when I was a kid and I think I can count on one hand the amount of ice fishing expeditions I’ve been involved in my life. My earliest memory of ice fishing goes back to when I was about 8 or 9 years old. My dad took me out on frozen Lake Erie. We made our way through the bush across from our house at Point Pelee, pulling a toboggan with all of our supplies. Mark Ribble After navigating the makeshift trail through the deep snow, we made it over the shoreline ice hills and headed out onto the lake. I remember being mesmerized by the cracking of the ice as it made those ominous sounds. After a few minutes we parked our sled and Dad got a line ready for me. He then used an auger and a spud to create a hole for me to fish in. I don’t remember if I caught anything that day, but do remember it was very cold and I accidentally stepped in the fishing hole and got a soaker up to my knee. Dad hurried me home and got me dry and then the next day I came down with the mumps. I managed to miss a few days of school and always associated that soaker with getting the mumps. Of course I know better now. I may have gone out ice fishing once or twice as a teenager but don’t really remember anything unique or special about those trips. My only other venture out on frozen Lake Erie came when I was in my early twenties. I believe there were five of us that went out on that fateful day. Brian and Greg Sellon, Troy and Tracy Wiper, and myself. We had a fancy homemade hut, all the tools necessary, a bucket of minnows and something to sip on to warm our souls, that wasn’t coffee. Funny, four of the five of us were together last Saturday night and we laughed about that day. As we stepped down onto the ice off the end of the dock, I remember we tipped over the minnow bucket and lost most of them. As we scrambled to pick up errant minnows, I remember the ice below us kind of heaving like it was about to give way. I had a bad feeling. A few more steps and we parked our sled and went to make our hole with the ice spud. Expecting to take a few whacks to get through, it broke through right away, revealing just how thin the ice was after all. It wasn’t much more than a couple inches thick. Seeing this, I started to go into a little panic and immediately went to all fours, employing a stop-drop-and-crawl defense. The rest of them thought this was funny. They all laughed (and continue laughing to this day), but we all scampered safely back to the dock and cancelled our fishing plans for the day. I grew up on that lake but I don’t remember ever being as scared on Lake Erie as I was that day. Well, other than a summer storm trip we took to Pelee Island on Sam Ouellette’s little 16-foot fiberglass boat about 1983. Somehow, we thought we could outrun the Pelee Islander and get to the island way ahead of our wives and girlfriends and the rest of our ball team. We didn’t. I thought we were dying that day, but I’ll save that for another column.

RIB’S RAMBLINGS

The Kingsville Fish Hatchery (aka Dominion Fish Hatchery) was erected around 1916 at a cost of $11,560. The two-storey frame structure, 87 feet long by 36 feet wide, was built on the west side of Division Street South, at the lakefront, where luxury townhomes now stand. Local fishermen had lobbied the Dominion Government to increase the number of hatcheries in the western Lake Erie basin in order to stimulate the fishing economy. Kingsville was selected over Amherstburg for the location of the new facility. An adjacent residence was also built for the use of the Fish Hatchery Superintendent and his family. After closing the facility in 1960, the building was used by the Kingsville Board of Works and then eventually demolished in 1998. The land was sold to a developer around 1999. The Polar Bear Dip was held on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Cedar Beach, Kingsville. The Dip always attracts dippers of all ages who wade into the icy Lake Erie water.

“Camo Team”, representatives from Leamington Ladies Hockey League, have participated in the Polar Bear Dip for the full 20 years. Kim Cavers, the founding co-ordinator of the fundraiser played in the hockey league and started the Dip. The hockey ladies have supported the cause since then with a special costume theme each year. Atoms win, lose

After a few weeks off, the Southpoint Atom Community Trophy team was bound to be rusty and it showed. Their first game of the weekend was against Harrow White. Harrow scored early in the second. In the third, Trophy’s Connor Rumble-Anastacio took the puck down the ice and scored a shorthanded goal. Five minutes later, Connor took another skate and scored his second goal. Chase Collins added to the lead when he stole the puck at the Harrow blue line, brought it in and scored. Harrow scored one more. Southpoint’s goalie Ty Gould made some key saves that enabled his team to come away with a 3-2 win. The second game was against Erie North Shore Blue. Blue won 9-1. Southpoint picked up one goal when Chase snagged the puck in the offensive end, made a beautiful move on the defence and then slipped the puck under the Blue’s goalie.

Atom Minor A’s begins semi-finals

The Southpoint Point Pelee Karting Atom Minor A Capitals hit the road this past weekend to begin their OMHA semi-final series against the New Hamburg Huskies. The Huskies have been the top rated team in Ontario, so Southpoint understood full well that they would need to play their best hockey in order to advance. On Saturday, Feb. 29 the Capitals came to play right from the opening faceoff. Charlie Ketler hit Ben Liebrock with a pass as he came out of the penalty box and he skated in across the blue line and ripped his shot along the ice low blocker. Three minutes later on a 5-on-3 power play the Huskies tied it. Somehow, 45 seconds into the middle frame New Hamburg kicked the puck in and somehow this goal was allowed to stand. Five minutes into the second, AJ Youssef chipped the puck to Tyler Thomas whose shot rebounded to Brayden Foster who buried his shot to even up the score. Next, Liebrock spun in the slot and fired his shot off the post where Zack Bradley was waiting to backhand in the loose puck to take the lead again. In the third, while on yet another one of their power plays, New Hamburg tied the game. The score remained 3-3 through regulation, sending the teams to overtime. While Southpoint controlled most of the play and generated most of the scoring chances it was the Huskies, with four to go who scored on a broken play to win the first game 4-3. It was a disappointing loss for the Caps who played a better part of the game shorthanded yet still managed to easily outshoot and outplay their opponent. On Sunday afternoon the two teams met again. The first period ended scoreless. Halfway through the second, while playing 4-on4, the Caps swarmed with Jonathan Recker shooting on net. Kayden Cook found

the puck in the scrum and roofed his shot to take the lead. Cook came out from the corner and slid a beautiful pass cross crease to Zack Bradley who one-timed it home to go up by two. With 2:34 remaining, Liebrock won an offensive zone faceoff to Cook who ripped his shot past their stunned goalie to increase the lead. On the next shift, Brayden Foster won his battle behind the net and slid a backhand pass out to Owen Derksen in the slot who rifled in his shot high glove to go up 4-0. New Hamburg tallied a goal in the third while on a four-minute power play. With two minutes remaining, while killing another penalty and New Hamburg’s net empty, Owen Derksen fired it down the ice into the empty cage to solidify the 5-1 victory. Christian Papp, in net for the Capitals earned the win. Southpoint is home on Friday, Mar. 6 at 6:30 p.m. for Game 3, with Game 4 on Saturday, Mar. 7 at 1:45 p.m. .

The Southpoint Atom Stars took part this past weekend in the Keith Lindsay Memorial Tournament in Leamington. The Stars started off the tournament early Friday morning against Lakeshore Lightening White. As soon as the puck was dropped, Jordyn Lafaive made a quick pass to Ava Carrierro to put the Stars on the board. Later in the period saw another goal by Grace Bedard. In the second and third, the Stars kept dominating with goals from Jordyn Lefaive, Taylor Lafaive and another by Grace Bedard. The Lightening were only able to get the puck past the Stars defense once and the game ended with a score of 5-1. Later that evening, the Stars faced off in Wheatley against the London Devilettes and again dominated the puck to win the game 5-2. Saturday morning the Stars faced off against the Wallaceburg Lakers. The Lakers came out strong and by the beginning of the third period they were ahead by three; however, the Stars never gave up and landed two goals in a row by Jordyn Lafaive and one by Ava Carrierro to tie up the game. The Lakers were then able to find the net once more to take the lead back. With two minutes left in the game, Carrierro popped it in the net to end the game in a hard fought 4-4 tie.

Saturday evening the Stars met up with the Essex Thunder. Chloe Taylor played her heart out between the pipes and wasn’t going to let anything by her as the Stars dominated with goals from Jordyn Lafaive, Ava Carrierro, Alexa Thiele, Grace Bedard and a firsttime goal by Vianca Steel. The Thunder was only able to sneak one by Taylor and the game ended at 7-1. Sunday morning the Stars faced off in the semi-finals against the Stoney Creek Sabres. The Sabres popped two in the net in the first and one more late in the second to take a 3-0 lead. The Stars once again pulled themselves together and Grace Bedard put them on the board with just under two minutes left in the period. The Stars exploded in the second to see goals from Jordyn Lafaive and Ava Carrierro. With just over six minutes left, Taylor Lafaive let it fly and scored for the Stars to take the lead. Stars to the championship game with a 4-3 victory. The championship game saw the Stars face off once again with the Wallaceburg Lakers. Two minutes into the game, the Stars Taylor Lafaive passed the puck up to Ava Carriero who was able to pop it into the net to put the Stars on the board with an early lead. It was a constant battle back and forth, but the Stars defense of Natalie Edwards, Cassandra Derksen, Payton Insley, Payton Walker and Taylor Lafaive kept constant pressure on the Lakers to keep them away from Chloe Tay-

lor. The offence of Selena Gualtieri, Alaska Lalonde, Viance Steel, Alexa Thiele and Zoey Williams also battled hard with many shots on the net. Late in the second, the Lakers finally got on the board to tie up the game and at the end of the third period it was still a 1-1 tie, so it was off to overtime. The Stars played their hearts out but with just over a minute left in the extra 3-on-3 period,

the Lakers landed a goal to win the championship and take home gold. The Southpoint Atom Stars walked away with the silver medal this time but always have hearts of gold. Flyers honour graduating age players

Kingsville Kings eliminated by Ravens in GMHL semifinals

By Bryan Jessop

Although the Leamington Flyers hope to get another six to seven weeks out of the 2019-20 season, they are already certain that nearly half the roster will be sorely missed for 2020-21. Moments prior to the current campaign’s final regular season home game against the rival Chatham Maroons, the Flyers presented their traditional on-ice ceremony for players engaged in their final season of junior hockey. This year’s crop of 20 year olds includes forwards Rory DiNiro, Josh King, Nick Smith, Maddux Rychel and Griffin Robinson, defensemen Kade McKibbin, Jaydon Fetter and Zach Taylor and goaltender Matthew Waite. The graduating age players were met at the red line for the ceremony by parents and other family members prior to the opening faceoff. This season’s count of nine 20-year-olds represented the league’s allowable maximum since what is known as “The Caledonia Rule” was introduced three seasons ago. “For guys like Kade McKibbin who’s been here his whole Junior B career, it’s a special night,” noted Flyers head coach Cam Crowder. Rory DiNiro, a Leamington resident, has been a forward with the Flyers since arriving from the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Aurora Tigers during the 2016-’17 season. In 113 GOJHL regular season games, DiNiro tallied 24 goals (including four game winners) and 30 assists for 54 points while adding 48 penalty minutes. In playoff action, he’s added 14 points in 27 games and 25 penalty minutes. On defense, Windsor’s Jaydon Fetter played 140 regular season games with the Flyers, adding 31 goals with five game winners and 76 assists for 107 points while being assessed 131 penalty minutes. He was the Western Conference’s Defensive Player of the Month for October of 2019 and was nominated to the 2017-18 Conference First Team All Stars while participating in that season’s GOJHL Prospects’ Game. Josh King, an Essex resident, was traded to the Flyers last season. In that time, King contributed 45 goals and 56 assists for 101 points in 178 regular season games, including 10 game winning goals while serving 240 minutes in penalties. Long-serving defenseman Kade McKibbin has contributed with 18 goals and 85 assists for 103 points while adding 129 penalty minutes for the Flyers. Five of his goals were game winners and despite his position

on the blue line, was declared the Western Conference’s Offensive Player of the Month for November of 2019. Griffin Robinson, a forward hailing from Harrow, started with the Flyers before being traded to the Maroons and then midway through the current season, back to Leamington. In 196 regular season games between the two teams, he has scored 105 goals and added 112 assists for 217 points while picking up 16 game winning goals and 156 penalty minutes.

“With all nine players, whether they’ve been here for a while or not that long, we’ve been fortunate to have them as part of our organization.” — Cam Crowder

Maddux Rychel of Tecumseh also played with the Flyers before being dealt to Chatham and then back to Leamington, although his Junior B days began with the LaSalle Vipers. In 221 games, Rychel has scored 74 goals and added 156 assists for 230 points along with 93 penalty minutes and nine game winners. He was the Western Conference’s Offensive Player of the Month for February and

September of 2019 and was an eighth round pick of the Hamilton Bulldogs in the 2015 OHL Priority Draft. Forward Nick Smith of Sault Ste. Marie is the most recent 1999-born addition to the Flyers. In 13 games, he’s scored eight goals and added five assists for 13 points while adding 23 penalty minutes. Three of his goals have been game winners. Zach Taylor, another Sault Ste. Marie resident, has scored 11 goals and accounted for 39 assists for 49 points in 62 games as a defenseman with the Flyers. His totals also include a game winning goal and 66 penalty minutes. Taylor is a 15th round pick of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the 2015 OHL Priority Draft. Goaltender Matthew Waite of Sherbrooke, Quebec, was added to the Flyers during the 2019 offseason. In 26 games with Leamington, he tabulated 20 wins, six losses, two shutouts, a goals against average of 2.74 and a .895 save percentage. Waite was the Western Conference Goaltender of the Month for December 2019. With the 2020 playoffs underway, the Flyers hope to make the most of the post season for their departing veterans. “With nine guys who’ve got careers that are about to come to an end, we take pride in trying to give them careers to end on a high note,” Crowder explained.
