At the South Shore YMCA we are dedicated to helping all our members establish lifelong health and fitness habits. Living healthy is about learning to thrive at every age and stage of your life. With that in mind we are excited to offer fitness instruction for children as young as age seven, group exercise classes open to all levels, Active Older Adult classes, and the Partnership Program for physically disabled children and adults.
For those members who are living with Diabetes, Heart or Pulmonary disease, or recovering from surgery, we offer our Structured Exercise Program. We also have personal training and coaching services for any member who has set a goal and needs the help of a professional to reach that goal.
We are here to help you on your journey to better health and believe it’s not about the particular activity you choose as much as it is about the benefits of adopting a healthier lifestyle.

Registration Information Please note the following:
1. Due to high call volume, Full Memberships will not be sold over the phone.
Please purchase membership prior to designated registration days.
2. Please confirm your birth date and email address with us to help facilitate future web registration.
3. After week 2 of the program schedule, registration will not be allowed without approval from the program director.
Policies: Program Registration, Cancellations, Make Up Classes, and Credit/Refunds
Credits and Refunds
— If notification of withdrawal is received 48 hours or more prior to the first class, a full YMCA credit will be issued. A refund may be issued minus a $15.00 processing fee.
— If notification of withdrawal is received less than 48 hours prior to the first class, a $15.00 processing fee will be applied to both YMCA credits and refunds.
— If notification of withdrawal is received up to the third class, credits and refunds will be issued minus the number of classes held and a $15.00 processing fee.
— After the third class, only a YMCA credit will be issued minus the number of classes held plus a $15.00 processing fee.
Program Registration
— At this time, YMCA credits can not be applied via On-Line Registration.
Program Cancellations
Wait List Policy
In order to receive member rates for programs, your membership must be current throughout the entire program session. If it expires during the session and you do not wish to renew, you must pay the non-member rate. The YMCA reserves the right to cancel a class due to low enrollment; a full Credit or Refund will be issued.
The YMCA may also cancel a class due to unforeseen events, i.e. Safety Concerns, Weather, Building Closures, etc. Make Up Classes
In the event that a cancelled class can not be made up by the YMCA, a YMCA credit will be issued for the cancelled class.
– Only the director of the program can give credits/refunds. Make up classes are not available for classes missed by participants due to personal conflicts.
If a program is full and you are not registered for a program, you may be placed on 3 wait lists. You will make no payment at that time and will be contacted by a program director if we are able to add you into the program (please do not call the YMCA to check your status and please do not come to the first class if you’re on the waiting list). Please make sure we have your correct address, email, and phone number on file.

YOUTH/TEEN AQUATICS
Teen Water Polo offers teens the opportunity to learn and play water polo according to the official rules. For 15 minutes the instructors teach the rules to water polo and practice dribbling, passing, and shooting drills. For the remainder of the hour the participants play the game with the instructors as the referee.

COMPETITIVE SWIMMING — YOUTH/TEEN
south shore ymca strypers swim team “We don’t want to create champions, but to create an environment in which champions are inevitable.”
About Us: Under the new leadership of Australian Director Tim Mulvihill, the Strypers swim team is committed to making every swimmer matter. Our primary goal is to provide a safe environment for our members and to help them develop the tools they need to grow personally and athletically. We actively promote the four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. This enables our members to develop in a competitive team environment to be successful in swimming and in life.
Ages: 6–18
Experience: Novice to national level
Locations: Mill Pond and Quincy Branches
Silver Squad – The Silver Squad is the entry of the SSYS program. This training group provides an important transition from water safety to the foundation principles of competitive swimming. The aim of this squad is to master the FUNdamentals of swimming.
Gold Squad – This group is designed to build on the basic skills developed in the Silver Squad. Swimmers in the gold squad will have their stroke technique refined and advanced, will learn to train and wil also be introduced to greater aerobic conditioning.
Age Junior Squad – The Age Junior group transitions swimmers toward the competitive Age Group program. In addition to increased athleticism, swimmers will also learn the importance of training in relation to performance. Age Group Squad – The Age Group is a highly important developmental training group in the SSYS swimming program. This squad is a
key transition point as swimmers move from a foundation of swimming principles toward the expectations of the senior training program. Swimmers can expect to be in this group for a number of seasons. A comprehensive dry land program is introduced at this level.
Senior Squad – The Senior Squad in the SSYS program is the second highest level training group available. The aim of this group is to qualify and be highly competitive in New England Swimming YMCA, USA and MIAA Championships meets.
National Squad – This group represents the highest level of practice and coaching available with the South Shore YMCA Strypers. The aim of this training group is to be highly competitive at both the YMCA and USA National Championship level.

The Flyers Introduction to Swim Team
45 min. class / 2 days per week
Designed for swimmers who are ready for more than traditional swim lessons, but not quite ready for the full commitment of swim team. Participants will be educated on the biomechanical elements of all of the competitive strokes including starts and turns. This knowledge will be practically applied through progression-based teaching from basic body balance through swim-specific skill set acquisition.
Fees: $216 Full Member; $322 Non-Mbr

ARTS & EDUCATION — YOUTH
Top Banana is a unique after-school math program where learning math and having fun go hand in hand. Our approach simply “clicks” with children because it is based on the scientific knowledge of how human memory works. The program teaches the ageless “tricks” for doing math quickly and effortlessly. Instead of the rote memorization of facts, we place the emphasis on breaking a problem into smaller components to devise a solution. Focusing on doing math mentally through logic and reasoning, our one of a kind curriculum turns learning math into playing with numbers. It helps build confidence and self-esteem, learn the practical side of mathematics and embrace critical thinking.
Math Kangaroo
Math Kangaroo is an international schoolchildren competition in mathematics. The contest takes place annually on a third Thursday of March. The competition originally started out in Australia in the 1980’s. In 1991, it came to France where it was dubbed “Math Kangaroo” for the place of its origin. It was brought to the United States 1998. In the United States, 10,000 students in 34 states had participated last March.
The contestants are offered 24 multiple choice questions in grades 2 through 4 and 30 questions in grades 5 and above. The test session is 75 minutes long. Students must be able to work independently. Every student is recognized for participating. The winners and award are announced in May. Top Banana Education Foundation is opening a new Math Kangaroo test center at the Hanover YMCA. To help students better prepare for the competition in March, practice sessions will be offered starting in September.

In an ongoing effort to keep our kids engaged in regular physical activity, we offer instructional visits as a full member benefit to our youth (7–12 years). Children learn how to safely and correctly use selected cardiovascular equipment and strength training equipment along with proper stretching techniques and Health & Well-being Center etiquette. Once fully trained,* youth members will be able to use the strength and cardio machines on their own.**

As neighbors and champions in our community the opportunity to collaborate through the Proctor and Gamble Grant will fuel our common goal of bringing the best innovative programs to the special needs population of the South Shore.

tae kwon do
Tae Kwon Do is the Korean martial art for self-defense. It is the scientific use of the body to generate maximum power for unarmed combat. All classes are taught by Black Belt Instructors certified by the International Tae KwonDo Federation (ITF) and United States Tae Kwon-Do Federation (USTF).
Intro to Youth Tae Kwon Do
(50 min. class) Studio 1 / 6–12 years.
This class introduces students to basic stances, punches, blocks and kicks. Basic martial arts are taught through various fun and exciting drills. Students learn selfdefense concepts and gain self confidence, self-control and discipline.

Germantown Neighborhood Center Since 1982, the Germantown Neighborhood Center (GNC) has been providing critical support services, needed resources, programs and workshops to the youth and families of the Germantown and neighboring communities of Quincy. Located within one of Quincy’s largest public housing developments, the GNC serves a community of mostly low-income, single-parent households and works with support and guidance from the South Shore YMCA to identify and develop strategies to address community needs. Our youth programs give kids a safe environment where they can grow and learn positive values that they will carry with for a lifetime. Women’s programs are designed to get women out of the house and build relationships with other women who are in the same situation. Childcare and dinner are often provided. Women are encouraged to bring the whole family while mom engages in skill-building workshops with other women. Our food pantry serves residents all over the City of Quincy with food assistance. The Holiday Assistance program lifts a burden off the shoulders of many families during a time that is even more difficult financially. We are constantly trying to raise more money, add more programs, and do all that we can to help. Our programs and services work toward giving community members the skills, confidence, and resources to take action and improve their lives. In an effort to give the youth in our community more opportunities to play basketball in a league which helps develop skill while keeping them active and healthy, the South Shore YMCA will be hosting a 5th grade girls and 5th grade boys travel basketball team for the winter season. Guided by experienced advisors, discuss current state issues with state administrators, elected officials and students from high schools and YMCA’s from all over the state. Delegates can choose to participate in the executive branch, legislative branch, judicial branch, and the press corps or on a lobbying team. The year ends with a 4 day conference where the delegates put all of their knowledge to the test on the floor of the Massachusetts State House.

In this exciting new playgroup led by an experienced special educator and behavioral therapist, children ages 2–5 and their caregivers can play, socialize and learn in a developmentally appropriate, judgment free setting. Geared towards children with Autism (but open to all with related needs), participants can expect a predictable schedule, age-appropriate visual cues and plenty of positive reinforcement to promote success during group time. A great opportunity for early socialization outside of school as well as well as connecting with other families in the community. Designed for children with Asperger’s Syndrome and High Functioning Autism, participants will build on a repertoire of essential social skills. Using positive language, taking turns, and initiating conversation are just some of the topics to be covered in this fall enrichment group. The group is facilitated by an experienced educator in the field of special education. Participants are encouraged to attend teen night. Strengthening individuals of all abilities
The South Shore YMCA Partnership Program is designed specifically for persons with disabilities who are interested in a structured exercise program.
Who will you be training with?
Our Partnership Program will provide a volunteer to teach the participant how to properly use the specialized strength training and cardiovascular equipment in our fitness facility. Participants who do not have a partner to work with are eligible to enroll, but may experience a waiting period until a volunteer becomes available.
Eligible participants include persons with:* •

* Eligibility is based on individual need and determined on a case by case basis. This program is recreational in nature and not to be considered rehabilitation. The volunteers are not trained professionals; the workouts are not to be considered personal training.

What does this program cost?
The Partnership Program is available to full YMCA members at no additional cost.
When, where and how will you train?
A volunteer will provide one-on-one instruction in our Health & Well-being Center for initial program design and training on the equipment. Your regular workout schedule will depend on you and your training partners’ availability. When training in our swimming pool area, if you are in need of a pool partner, please contact MaryEllen Olson, Partnership Program Coordinator, at ext. 322.

In-House 3-Player Team Tennis This level 2.5–3.0 league combines singles and doubles play in a team format. Each team consists of 3 players competing in one singles match and one doubles match per week. The 90-minute format is best of three sets, no-ad scoring. A 12point tiebreaker will be played in lieu of a third set. A point is awarded to your team for each match won. Team standings will be recorded with the first place team at sessions end earning a prize.
