safe summer As summer approaches, children and families prepare to spend more time around water. While this can be a fun and exciting time, it is also a time for extra caution. Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of accidental death in children, the risk being highest in toddlers & teen boys. Of all preschoolers who drown, 70% are in the care of one or both of their parents at the time. When it comes to drowning prevention, supervision is the most important layer of defense. When you are enjoying your summer at a pool or the beach keep the following things in mind. Actively supervise children around water, don’t let distractions even the telephone get in the way. When there are multiple adults present, designate one to be “on guard”, never assume that someone else is watching. Be at a “huggable distance” around young children, keeping them within arms reach at all times. If you own a pool and your child goes missing, check the pool first. Seconds could make all the difference. As the Aquatics Director and a parent of two young children, I am frequently asked what I would recommend as a swimming aid for children. Often families rely on inflatable or foam filled toys such as swimmies, noodles, and tubes to help their children in the water. While these devices are fun for children, they should not be used as a water safety device. The best Personal Floatation Device (PFD) for non and beginner swimmers is a properly fitted Coast Guard approved life jacket. Lifejackets are also a must when boating. Remember to not just pack it, but wear your life jacket. We hope that your family has an enjoyable and safe summer. Keep in mind when around the water, Safety First, Second and Third. Yours truly, Stephanie Higgins

2012 summer strypers swim team June 18 - August 9* (Championship meets 8/10 & 8/11). The Strypers Swim Team focuses on teaching the four competitive strokes, starts, and turns while having fun in the sun with their friends and coaches. The team is made of current Strypers swimmers and welcomes Novice, Intermediate and Advanced swimmers. The team competes weekly against other South Shore Swim League teams. Parents will be expected to assist the team by timing and other jobs that the meet requires. Please call Julie Margolis at 781-829-8585 ext. 242 to set up a tryout. To tryout, the swimmer must be able to complete 25 yards of freestyle and 25 back stroke. Swimmers need to have a solid black bathing suit and a pair of fins. We recommend TYR split fins that may be purchased through www.kbswimandsports.com. A team t-shirt can be ordered and purchased at registration.

New Location… same Great Camp! …at eastern Nazarene College!
Welcome to camp! With construction of the new building taking place on our former camp grounds, we are excited to tell you about the next chapter of our summer camp programs in Quincy. Starting this summer, our Quincy camp will be located at Eastern Nazarene College — a mere 5 minute drive from the Y on East Elm Ave. Each and every time we visit the campus, we continue to get more and more excited about the future of camp. The space is extremely camp conducive and offers us many options not possible during our time at the Y. The campus is the perfect size — small enough to be well-contained, yet large enough to give each activity dedicated space. On warm, sunny days, there is plenty of wide open field space as well as smaller, shaded grass areas. On rainy days, we have access to numerous classrooms, multipurpose rooms, halls and gym space. As there is not a pool at ENC, we will be transporting campers to and from the YMCA to ensure campers can continue having instructional and recreational swim time. Overall, all of us are extremely excited about the future of camp and even more excited for you to see our new home! The South Shore YMCA Summer Day Camps are specifically designed to provide a safe and fun environment to offer opportunities for young people to try new things, learn, grow and make friendships that last forever. Our philosophy is that we must make the most of our opportunity to have a positive influence on the lives of children. Everything we do here at camp – every activity we lead, every decision we make, every policy we apply – is guided by the firm belief that we are responsible for the children we lead. We are responsible for showing them how to be honest, caring, respectful and responsible members of the community.

Who will you be training with?
Our Partnership Program will provide a master trainer to teach both the participant and his/her selected partner how to properly use the specialized strength training and cardiovascular equipment in our fully equipped fitness facility. Participants who do not have a partner to work with are eligible to enroll, but may experience a waiting period until a volunteer becomes available.
Eligible participants include persons with:** •

•
Provide medical clearance by a physician
•
Submit an exercise prescription by a physical or occupational therapist (if applicable)
When, where and how will you train?
A master trainer will provide one-on-one instruction in our Health & Well-being Center for initial program design and training on the equipment. Your regular workout schedule will depend on you and your training partners’ availability. When training in our swimming pool area, we recommend you provide your own partner.
What equipment will you use for training?

MEET KENNY AND BENNY nd Benny are brothers who know and appreciate th Kenny and the impact that the Y has had on their lives. Kenny, who is a camp counselor at the Quincy Summer Day Camp, loves his job because of the unique job experiences it provides for his future. He also gets to spend time with his little brother, Benny, who is one of the campers. Kenny appreciates all the skills, confidence and self-esteem that Benny has developed at camp. Knowing the Y provides quality camps with great role models with fun activities helps this family enjoy their summer together. “It’s a win, win” situation”.
By supporting the South Shore YMCA’s Annual Support Campaign, we will be able to impact the lives of children and families in our communities. Many children are not able to enjoy the camp experience during the summer like Benny will have the advantage to enjoy the sunshine, swimming, sports, camp songs and friendships that make their summer memorable. Please MAKE A DIFFERENCE in a child’s life by donating to the Annual Support Campaign. 100% of your donation directly supports financial assistance, programs and services for everyone in our community. A community Neighborhood Council governs the GNC and works with support and guidance from the South Shore YMCA to identify and develop strategies to address community needs. The Council has ultimately concluded that in order for the members of this community to succeed in improving their lives and those of their families, they must gain the skills and confidence to take action. Our programs and services work toward this end, serving over a thousand adults, youth, and seniors throughout the year. Services include the Food Pantry, Holiday Assistance, Advocacy and Referrals
