Interviewing couples for this magazine and hearing their love stories gives me great joy. Some couples have been together for years before they feel ready to marry. Their enduring love inspires me. Although every love story is unique, yours is the most important. How do you want to portray your relationship at your wedding? To share their personalities, some couples incorporate themes into their weddings. Learn more in the story about themed weddings. In this issue you will see local weddings featuring a variety of wedding styles, colors and venues. I hope you find some inspiration in these beautiful pages. Our wedding dress features are sure to engage you in conversation about what style of gown you want to wear. We’ve paired the clothes with custom handmade jewelry, plus gorgeous floral bouquets. See the latest in hairstyles and makeup on these pages, too. Getting married near the waterfront is a frequent preference for couples looking for a wedding venue. Surprisingly, waterfront locations are rare. You will find such a place, however, at Foss Waterway Seaport, where we photographed our magazine cover and one of our wedding dress features. When thinking about your honeymoon, read the article about travel agents and the ways they can help you plan a memorable trip. Whether you choose to use a travel agent or plan the trip on your own, researching your destination is important. In 2018, South Sound Wedding & Event magazine presents the South Sound Wedding Show in Olympia and South Sound Wedding Workshops in Olympia and Tacoma. Check our websites for details: www.southsoundweddingshow.com www.southsoundweddingshow.com/workshops You will find more wedding inspiration on our social media pages: Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. Tips on researching, choosing and sharing wedding colors 1. Research the latest fashion colors. Why? Because fashion and retail selections reflect color trends. It’s best to choose trendy wedding colors because you’ll have more options and be more likely to find what you need. 2. What colors do you and your loved one prefer? Think of the colors you have in your home or in your wardrobe. Which colors are you drawn to? 3. To help decide on colors, go to a large department store together and see which colors you are both drawn to. 4. Go to a bridal store to look at bridesmaid dress colors. What do you like?
PANTONE Warm sand

5. Go to a men’s tuxedo shop and look at colors there, what are you drawn to?
6. Do research and find tips at www.weddingandeventmagazine. com/spring-colors 7. Other resources include national wedding shopping websites such as David’s Bridal and Men’s Wearhouse, which have helpful color-pairing tips. 8. Choose at least two colors for your wedding and a third for an accent color. 9. To share your wedding colors, buy a yard of fabric in each color, cut it into pieces, and share it with your florist, apparel store, caterer and others. Select the fabric that represents the color you want. Paint samples from the hardware store or photos on your phone, tablet, computer or printer all look different; they may not accurately show the color you want.
WARM SAND, PANTONE 15-1214 Warm sand is a comforting neutral shade that effortlessly connects the seasons.

organization that collects and resells wedding dresses to raise funds for charity. The charity bridal store accepts new, once-worn and sample wedding dresses from designers, manufacturers, bridal stores and individuals, and resells them at discounted prices. Proceeds support a variety of local and national womenfocused charities. To date, Brides for a Cause has given over $500,000 to charity! When Puget Sound-area brides purchase their wedding dresses from Brides for a Cause, they help raise money for the organization’s mission. The charity bridal organization has two stores: a new store in Tacoma and one in Portland, Oregon. Each location features different dresses, so brides are encouraged to shop at both locations, and to visit regularly until they find their dress. Inventory is replenished weekly when new dress donations are processed. The store inventory is unique — offering a variety of dresses — and constantly

changing. Dresses are affordable, with prices starting at $150! “We are a very untraditional store and cater to a lot of different types of brides,” says Erin Scharf, founder of Brides for a Cause. “We see a lot of budget-conscious, last-minute, plus size and eco-conscious brides come through our doors — and everyone is welcome.” The store is open seven days a week, and no appointment is ever needed. HOW BRIDES CAN HELP
After your wedding, donate your wedding dress. Brides for a Cause accepts wedding dress donations throughout the year. The organization accepts wedding dresses and bridal accessories five years old and newer. Donations are tax-deductible and may be mailed or dropped off locally in Tacoma or Portland. ADVICE FROM NEWLYWEDS
Make sure someone takes a video of the ceremony! We were so caught up in the moment, and also nervous, that we barely noticed what was happening around us, including the wonderful music. A good friend of ours played acoustic guitar and sang, and we were too nervous to even hear him. I highly recommend making sure to have someone videotape so you can see it later!
n It
is easy to get caught up in the stress of planning, but when the day comes, live in the moment and remember that, no matter what happens, the day is about the two of you making a commitment to each other. n From a practical perspective, don’t procrastinate. Know what you’re willing to splurge on and what you’re more flexible on. n Figure out your budget early. Vendors will inquire and your budget will determine everything. n Have your caterer set aside your meals to eat during the cocktail hour. This allows you to mingle with guests while they eat dinner, and you won’t be hangry!

Planning a wedding is so fun and exciting, but also stressful from start to finish. It just is. Be present for all the ups and downs, and do your best to appreciate every part of the planning process, because it will be over before you know it. The most important thing I learned was to stand your ground early on and make sure your wedding is everything that you want. There will be lots and lots of opinions offered, and maybe others won’t understand your vision initially, but it is your day, so make it everything you want it to be. — LISA AND ZACHARY ROBTOY SOUTH SOUND WEDDING & EVENT MAGAZINE | 2018

ADVICE FROM NEWLYWEDS what advice do you have for engaged couples planning their wedding and reception?
Decide what is important to you, and let that set your budget priorities. We did not have a summer wedding at the ocean, because we wanted to take advantage of off-season pricing for the venue and vendors, saving quite a bit in the process. This also allowed for reduced travel costs for outof-town guests. Savings allowed us to spend more on a DJ, hosted bar, etc., that would have been all spent on venue rental during peak season.
Plan ahead for the end of the night! Where does the leftover food and cake go? Is there a place to properly hold hot or cold foods? What about décor cleanup? Who is in charge of that? Your family and friends have enjoyed themselves (and might have had a Enjoy the process! While talking to couples, Schmidt says that she uncovers a handful of themes that fit her couples and their story. Sometimes she starts working on one theme, and as she works on it, another theme emerges. “That’s the kismet element alive and magical in theme making, and I love when it occurs because it means a deeper story
has unfolded for my couple,” says Schmidt. WEAVING THE THEME INTO THE DAY
For a couple who wants to weave the theme throughout the wedding — starting with the invitations, which introduce the theme — the wedding planner or officiant can involve the other wedding professionals. Most wedding professionals are artisans who enjoy tailoring their work to your theme and colors. From the invitation designer and apparel store to the florist and caterer, all can be notified about your theme and asked for their input on how best to communicate it. Or you can give them specific instructions on how you want the theme carried through.
Engaged couples who want a themed wedding should consider getting the officiant involved early in the planning process to help create the theme and incorporate it in your plans. “My ceremonialist work, as both a ritual [diviner] and story diviner, translates to being ever-attuned to motifs that can lend substance and cohesion, not just to their love story and ceremony, but also to the day itself,” says Schmidt. As Schmidt was crafting an alpine destination wedding for Angela and Beau Jess, her initial theme plan of “Love and Luck Everlasting” was inspired by the couple’s chance meeting over a game of quarters and by the prayerful handfasting ritual planned for the wedding. The ceremony theme later morphed to

“The trick to a stellar wedding ceremony is to ensure it is a subtly and cleverly woven process versus an overtly contrived construct, “ says Schmidt. “Less is indeed more when it comes to a concept or theme. Your theme should be something that surprises and delights your guests rather than annoying them with overuse. And at the same time, your theme should serve to add storybook meaning and enchantment to your day.” “Themes are great and [can be] fun, and there are various ways to do [them], inexpensively or expensively, but at the end of the day, the whole point of this was to bring forth your personalities, [have] a wonderful celebration with everyone and profess your life-long love to one another,” says Fluetsch. ADVICE FROM NEWLYWEDS Don’t be scared of standing out. You will never have a repeat of your wedding day; do it to the best of your ability. There will be things that might not go according to plan, but you just need to keep in mind that you are marrying the love of your life! If that is your only goal at the end of the day, then everything will be perfect! — KASEY AND GABE MOREN

STRESS-FREE GETAWAY
Travel agents ease honeymoon plans
E
VEN IN THIS do-it-yourself era,
sometimes it’s comforting to rely on professionals to help you navigate aspects of your wedding, reception and honeymoon. Planning your honeymoon in an everchanging world can be made simpler by working with a professional travel agent. Travel agents — yes, they still exist — are travel professionals. They regularly travel throughout the U.S. and around the world to find the best hotels and excursions for their clients. They communicate with airlines, tour operators and companies that own and operate hotels. With their expertise and your input, they will put together a personalized honeymoon itinerary. Whether you envision a trip within the U.S. or to another country, be prepared to answer the tour agent’s questions about the kind of honeymoon you want to have. Some couples long to lounge in the warm sunshine, while others want outdoor adventures and yet others prefer day trips led by tour guides.
ADVANTAGES OF USING A TRAVEL AGENT
There are several advantages to working with a travel agent. “Couples become so focused on planning every detail of their wedding, then planning their honeymoon becomes too overwhelming or too time consuming and doesn’t get the full time it deserves,” says Christine Phillips, owneragent of Stationhouse Travel. “We meet with couples to discuss their expectations and travel styles, so we can fine tune the destination experience each person wants for that trip. It’s invaluable to have someone not involved in the wedding planning, to help craft the perfect honeymoon.” Working with a professional travel agent gives couples peace of mind. “There is a time savings, plus there will be less stress and they will get the trip that they envisioned,” says Paula Demmer, romance travel specialist at Travel Leaders in Lakewood. “We’re looking out for them.” “People can go on the internet and spend hours looking at travel destinations and there is so much information, they get confused,” says Debbie Meyer, travel consultant at Meyer’s House of Travel. “I can help them plan, in a stress-free way, a honeymoon that is exactly what they want.” While researching on the internet, couples need to be aware that the website information and photographs may not tell the entire story of the hotel property. “The pictures on

the hotel’s website may look fabulous, but they may have been taken the day the place opened 30 years ago,” says Meyer. “I will know what the hotel looks like now and if it has been remodeled since then.” TRAVEL AGENTS SPECIALIZE IN REGIONS
“I like to help people create memories,” says Demmer. “My passion is helping people travel well.” Demmer is an expert in the Caribbean, the South Pacific, African safaris, Europe, Asia and Australia. She also specializes in romance travel, creating romantic vacations, honeymoons, anniversaries and destination weddings.

For trips to Hawaii, there are agents who specialize in island travel. “I received indepth, on-island training on the six primary islands in Hawaii, by invitation directly from the island service bureaus,” says Phillips.

have learned when to anticipate specials,” says Phillips. “We can navigate the market, and we have contracts that have benefits with more amenities.”
MEETINGS WITH A TRAVEL AGENT
Today’s travel agents are accustomed to planning trips with their clients in a variety of ways: in person or by phone, email or video conferencing. When Meyer meets with couples, she asks them what they want to do and how active they want to be. “I like to meet with couples to help them find out what’s important to them on a honeymoon,” says Meyer. “Some couples haven’t traveled at all,” says Meyer. “It’s nice to plan something special for the couple so they can spend time with each other. It’s fun to send them someplace they have never been; they get excited about going someplace new.”

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS WITH YOUR NEW NAME
If your honeymoon immediately follows your wedding, you won’t have your new name, if you chose to change it, in your legal documents. “I advise couples how to prepare documents, making sure that they don’t make airline reservations in their married name, because the spouse won’t have identification with new married name on it,” says Meyer. If the honeymoon is taken months after the wedding, there is more time to get legal documents updated with any name changes.
INSURING YOUR TRIP
When you use a travel agent for your travel plans, if there are any emergencies along the way, the agent will have given you several phone numbers to call for assistance. “I will give my customers a toll-free number to call if they have travel issues,” says Meyer. “I will also give them my phone numbers, too, but I call the same toll-free number that I give to them to solve their travel dilemma.” “There are a lot of people concerned about their safety and security on trips,” she says. “I can address their concerns when we meet.” While some agents recommend travel insurance for every trip, others will amend their advice according to the specific trip. “I recommend travel insurance, but it depends on the destination, current medical insurance and coverage,” says Phillips. “It can be very valuable when luggage is lost, medical or emergency issues arise, or there is a problem with a flight.” PROFESSIONALS QUOTED IN THIS ARTICLE:

ON A BUDGET
Money-saving wedding tips Research costs of wedding items, then set a budget and stick to it. Spend the most money on what’s most important to you.
1.
2. Plan early, so you
can take advantage of sales and other opportunities. Schedule an offseason wedding (November through April). Consider having your wedding Monday through Thursday to save more costs.
3.
FIRSTLIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY
4. Smaller weddings
mean big savings. Cut your guest list. Depending on the cost of your wedding and reception, each guest costs about $150 or more. Find a low-cost venue: park, places of worship, gardens, private clubs and mansions, friend’s home or a restaurant. However, if the venue doesn’t have tables and chairs, you will incur rental fees. Hold your wedding and reception in the same location to avoid two venue rental fees.
5.
Limit food and drink to cost-affordable options. Consider brunch or lunch instead of dinner. Hold your wedding after dinner and serve dessert only.
6.
7.
Purchase a beautiful, small wedding cake to show guests, but have a sheet cake behind the scenes to cut for guests, or serve cupcakes to guests.
8.
Order the most cost-effective wedding invitations and other paper products.
9.
Use wedding flowers at the reception.
10. For wedding and reception décor, choose large items that make a big
impression rather than smaller items. Rent rather than purchase items. Shop for used wedding décor items that match your theme: borrow or purchase.
11. Purchase or rent wedding attire when it’s on sale or use a coupon. Men
could wear suits instead of tuxedos, especially popular right now in more casual settings.
12. To save money on photography, create your own wedding album. 13. Provide a photo booth for guests instead of favors. 14. Ask your wedding professionals for cost-saving tips. SOUTH SOUND WEDDING & EVENT MAGAZINE | 2018

Tips for an environmentally conscious wedding and reception
Use recycled paper products for invitations, save-the-date cards, menus, place cards and other communications to guests.

2. Hold your wedding and reception in the same location (no transportation needed between venues). 3.
WALLFLOWER PHOTOGRAPHY
Call for your appointment today
Use real dishes and cutlery rather than disposables.
4. Use cloth tablecloths and
napkins, and other linens that can be laundered.
5.
Set outdoor events during daylight hours.
Reuse flowers, bows and other decorations from the wedding at the reception.
7.
Share flower vases or other reusable items with a friend who is having a wedding, reception or event on a different day.
8.
If there is another wedding in the same venue earlier or later in the day, consider sharing flowers, bows and other decorations with the other wedding.
9.
10. Give edible treats, seedlings in
pots, native plants or charitable donations as favors.
Use LED lights on tabletops. They give the illusion of candlelight but are reusable and safer.

AITLYN “KAIT” AND CONNER CHESS WERE MARRIED in a farm-style
wedding at Conner’s family’s private farm, Rocky Top Arena, on June 10, 2017. The couple met through Kait’s aunt, who played matchmaker by exchanging their contact information while Kait was attending Boise State University and Conner was living in Washington state. “We spent months emailing and talking on the phone before we realized our relationship had developed to beyond ‘just friends,’” describes Kait. During the holidays in 2011, the couple met in person. A few months after Kait’s graduation from college, the couple became engaged, in November 2016.

VISION: The couple had a clear
vision of how they wanted their guests to feel during their wedding and reception. “We wanted our guests to feel the passion of our relationship, the strength of our love and our commitment to each other,” says Kait. “Not only were we promising ourselves to each other, but it was a day to celebrate the joining of two families.”

Spooky October wedding at castle
PHOTOS BY WALLFLOWER PHOTOGRAPHY
The windy weather caused the lights to go out during the wedding ceremony, fitting the spooky, haunted theme of the wedding. The ceremony continued in the dark, and the electricity quickly returned. Attendance was lower than anticipated because the meteorologists’ forecast scared away some of the wedding guests.

ACHARY “ZACK” AND LISA ROBTOY were married at
Thornewood Castle on a dark and stormy night, Oct. 15, 2016. “The day of the wedding was supposed to be the ‘storm of the century,’ which in reality ended up being some light rain and wind, but resulted in a beautiful fall evening,” says Lisa.
Despite the forecast, many family members came from across the country to show their support to the couple. “It was great to have our families meet for the first time,” says Lisa. The couple chose the fall wedding date because both love the month of October; it’s their birthday month. Zack’s birthday is Oct. 5, Lisa’s birthday is Oct. 10 and their anniversary is Oct. 15. Also, their nod to Halloween fit perfectly into their wedding month.

THEME AND DÉCOR: The fall wedding
and haunted-castle theme called for black, red and fall colors. Haunted-theme décor accents included pumpkins, with fresh flowers in fall colors, and skeletons. “It was important for us to host an event that made everyone feel comfortable, but also expressed our personal style as a couple,” says Lisa. Beach theme at November wedding

ATI AND JUSTIN MILES, two
avid Sounders FC fans, were married Nov. 13, 2016, at the Town Hall at Seabrook, in Pacific Beach. The couple met a couple of years ago after a Sounders match, thanks to a mutual friend who introduced them. The two soccer fans found that “we had multiple things in common,” says Kati. Their other common interests include attending Dave Matthews concerts, drinking craft beer and watching the Seahawks. VISION: The couple planned the wedding
and reception with the aim of “having a good time with family and friends, including a good meal,” says Kati. “I wanted 58

to express ‘us’ and to be true to who we are — our personalities and likes. I feel this came through in the décor and the music.” “We also wanted to express our gratitude to our family and friends for their love and support,” says Kati. “We may not have done things in traditional order, but there was certainly love shown to us, and we wanted to reciprocate that feeling, and our thankfulness to all of those who supported us in finally making it official.” THEME AND DÉCOR: With Kati’s love for
all “beachy” décor, it was natural that she chose to be married at the ocean. The ocean venue and beach theme evolved into a

décor that included sand dollars, driftwood, starfish and oyster shells. “My grandparents lived on Puget Sound while I was growing up, and several items from their beach were used at the head table,” says Kati. In keeping with the beach theme, the wedding colors were shades of blue, aqua and turquoise, with white and silver. Kati’s signature blue color called “Kati color” by family and friends, is otherwise known as Baja blue.

event industry, so she wanted to use a less traditional setup. The 48 guests were seated on both sides of two long tables set near the sides of the room creating a center aisle for the ceremony. A conventional ceremony arrangement would have required a reset of the venue before the reception, since the November date allowed no outdoor option. To create an intimate focal point on the stage for the ceremony, the couple set up and decorated a square arbor. As guests arrived at the wedding, they SOUTH SOUND WEDDING & EVENT MAGAZINE | 2018

Justin’s parents were honored on the dance floor as the longest-married couple in the room.
RECEPTION DÉCOR: “I wanted lots of
sparkle and light,” says Kati. Tea light candles in glasses evoked a wave pattern everywhere. Sparkly linens reflected the light. The head table featured driftwood “Mr. and Mrs.” signs hanging from the back of the bride’s and groom’s chairs. “They were first used in my good friend’s wedding in Wisconsin,” says Kati. “I painted the Mr. and Mrs. in our colors, and now they now hang over our bed in our home.” As a nod to the groom’s favorite movie series, the cake topper had a Star Wars theme: “I Love You” and “I Know” lettering with silhouettes of Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia Organa and Harrison Ford as Han Solo. A beach-themed cake knife and server completed the cake table. The bar served wine from Dreaming Tree, Dave Matthews’s winery, along with assorted beers. “The . . . toast was very unique: I sourced blue [sparkling wine] (Blanc de Bleu), and guests toasted with a ‘Kati-colored’ toast,” says Kati. 60

GREEN TOUCHES: The couple used recycled beach glass in some of the décor, and the bride purchased some items secondhand. The linens were rented. China and silverware were used instead of disposables. Leftover food was packaged and brought home after the wedding, not thrown out. FAVORS: The couple gave favors of flip-flop
bottle openers in the wedding colors.
FAMILY AND FRIENDS: The couple’s family
members helped decorate at their wedding. “The individual touches that our friends and family contributed meant a lot,” says Kati. Kati and a good friend traded favors by serving as on-site coordinators for each other’s weddings (about four months apart). The mother of the bride knit a lacy shawl for the bride to wear to keep her warm in
“We had the Seahawks game on in the bar area downstairs during the reception time, but didn’t expect it to be quite as much of a draw as it was. The end of the reception was marked with great celebration when the Seahawks won,” says Kati. “After all the family had departed, the wedding party and close friends had one last dance together, and that was very memorable,” she says. Kati works in the hospitality field, and Justin is a retail merchandiser. They make their home, with their daughter, in Gig Harbor. The Orchard at Sunshine Hill, in Chehalis. They have known each other for many years. Since middle school, Hannah has been best friends with the groom’s sister, and during those years, she met Lucas. “I stole my sister’s best friend,” says Lucas.
The couple wanted to be married near where they grew up in Lewis County. “Because we knew each other for years and were friends before we got together, we have so many memories in Centralia and Chehalis, so getting married in the area was very important to us,” says Hannah. On their wedding day, they wanted to communicate their story to their guests. “Our officiant shared a bit of our story and 82

real weddings décor. Using the color scheme navy and gray, the décor followed a rustic motif. The couple and their families decorated open spaces with crates, lanterns, burlap and chalkboard signs. Among the couple’s favorite decorative touches were some old crates from Hannah’s grandfather’s blueberry farm. The bride’s grandfather made all the wooden rounds used as centerpieces. The bride’s sister made some chalkboard signs with the couple’s favorite Bible verse. The centerpiece and bouquet flowers were purchased locally and were arranged by Hannah’s sister, mom and two close family friends. The couple’s young niece and nephews — the flower girl and ring bearers — rode into the wedding ceremony in a decorated wagon. A friend catered the wedding and served cheesecakes for dessert because the couple prefers cheesecake to cake. Hannah’s mother made strawberry and blueberry toppings for the cheesecakes. A small cake was decorated with flowers and fruit for the cakecutting ritual. At the reception, the guests enjoyed making s’mores. SPECIAL MOMENTS:

were children. Their families were friends for years but lost touch when Kasey’s family moved to Skagit Valley. Kasey and Gabe re-established their friendship in October 2016 and began dating a few months later. They married June 4, 2017, at Gold Mountain Golf Club. The outdoor ceremony was held in a forested area of the golf club property. “We wanted to portray the love we have for each other as well as our love for Jesus Christ,” says Kasey. “Our ceremony was very Godcentered.” When Kasey’s dad had walked her down the aisle and she was standing next to him and her future husband, her dad read a poem he had written.

its second public fundraising event, NEON, in June 2017 at Tin Can Alley in Tacoma’s Dome District. The 350 guests raised $50,000 to fund Spaceworks programs for Tacoma creative entrepreneurs, artists and makers. The NEON event featured a variety of performing artists, along with painters and other creative artists. While guests snacked on fresh oysters and other appetizers, they roamed the room to see silent auction items on display — many of which were art pieces or gift certificates for musical performances. Art patrons watched two artists in an art battle painting on large canvases. Guests purchased raffle tickets to get a chance at winning one of the artists’ paintings. Some wedding and event businesses are listed on the websites of local visitor and convention bureaus. Some sites have pages dedicated to weddings. For a quick solution to finding a venue and a caterer, put together a list of your needs, and send it to the area’s visitor and convention bureau. Be very specific, including the number of guests and your preferences regarding the venues for wedding and reception, for example: indoors or outdoors, a single location, a waterfront venue, on-site catering (or not) and free parking. The staff will send a request for proposals to area businesses and will return responses that fit your needs. 94
The smaller bureaus have one- or twoperson staffs, plus volunteers. Be sure to allow several weeks to process your request. In smaller communities, the chamber of commerce may respond to such requests.
