RIDES FOR A CAUSE is a nonprofit

organization that collects and resells wedding dresses to raise funds for charity. The charity bridal store accepts new, once-worn and sample wedding dresses from designers, manufacturers, bridal stores and individuals, and resells them at discounted prices. Proceeds support a variety of local and national womenfocused charities. To date, Brides for a Cause has given over $500,000 to charity! When Puget Sound-area brides purchase their wedding dresses from Brides for a Cause, they help raise money for the organization’s mission. The charity bridal organization has two stores: a new store in Tacoma and one in Portland, Oregon. Each location features different dresses, so brides are encouraged to shop at both locations, and to visit regularly until they find their dress. Inventory is replenished weekly when new dress donations are processed. The store inventory is unique — offering a variety of dresses — and constantly

Dresses are affordable, with prices starting at $150! “We are a very untraditional store and cater to a lot of different types of brides,” says Erin Scharf, founder of Brides for a Cause. “We see a lot of budget-conscious, last-minute, plus size and eco-conscious brides come through our doors — and everyone is welcome.” The store is open seven days a week, and no appointment is ever needed. After your wedding, donate your wedding dress. Brides for a Cause accepts wedding dress donations throughout the year. The organization accepts wedding dresses and bridal accessories five years old and newer. Donations are tax-deductible and may be mailed or dropped off locally in Tacoma or Portland. ADVICE FROM NEWLYWEDS

Make sure someone takes a video of the ceremony! We were so caught up in the moment, and also nervous, that we barely noticed what was happening around us, including the wonderful music. A good friend of ours played acoustic guitar and sang, and we were too nervous to even hear him. I highly recommend making sure to have someone videotape so you can see it later!

is easy to get caught up in the stress of planning, but when the day comes, live in the moment and remember that, no matter what happens, the day is about the two of you making a commitment to each other. n From a practical perspective, don’t procrastinate. Know what you’re willing to splurge on and what you’re more flexible on. n Figure out your budget early. Vendors will inquire and your budget will determine everything. n Have your caterer set aside your meals to eat during the cocktail hour. This allows you to mingle with guests while they eat dinner, and you won’t be hangry!

Planning a wedding is so fun and exciting, but also stressful from start to finish. It just is. ADVICE FROM NEWLYWEDS what advice do you have for engaged couples planning their wedding and reception?

Decide what is important to you, and let that set your budget priorities. We did not have a summer wedding at the ocean, because we wanted to take advantage of off-season pricing for the venue and vendors, saving quite a bit in the process. This also allowed for reduced travel costs for outof-town guests. Savings allowed us to spend more on a DJ, hosted bar, etc., that would have been all spent on venue rental during peak season.

Plan ahead for the end of the night! Where does the leftover food and cake go? Is there a place to properly hold hot or cold foods? What about décor cleanup? Who is in charge of that? Your family and friends have enjoyed themselves (and might have had a Enjoy the process! While talking to couples, Schmidt says that she uncovers a handful of themes that fit her couples and their story. Sometimes she starts working on one theme, and as she works on it, another theme emerges. “That’s the kismet element alive and magical in theme making, and I love when it occurs because it means a deeper story

For a couple who wants to weave the theme throughout the wedding — starting with the invitations, which introduce the theme — the wedding planner or officiant can involve the other wedding professionals. Most wedding professionals are artisans who enjoy tailoring their work to your theme and colors. From the invitation designer and apparel store to the florist and caterer, all can be notified about your theme and asked for their input on how best to communicate it. Or you can give them specific instructions on how you want the theme carried through.

Engaged couples who want a themed wedding should consider getting the officiant involved early in the planning process to help create the theme and incorporate it in your plans. “My ceremonialist work, as both a ritual [diviner] and story diviner, translates to being ever-attuned to motifs that can lend substance and cohesion, not just to their love story and ceremony, but also to the day itself,” says Schmidt. As Schmidt was crafting an alpine destination wedding for Angela and Beau Jess, her initial theme plan of “Love and Luck Everlasting” was inspired by the couple’s chance meeting over a game of quarters and by the prayerful handfasting ritual planned for the wedding. The ceremony theme later morphed to

They regularly travel throughout the U.S. and around the world to find the best hotels and excursions for their clients. If your honeymoon immediately follows your wedding, you won’t have your new name, if you chose to change it, in your legal documents. “I advise couples how to prepare documents, making sure that they don’t make airline reservations in their married name, because the spouse won’t have identification with new married name on it,” says Meyer. If the honeymoon is taken months after the wedding, there is more time to get legal documents updated with any name changes.

INSURING YOUR TRIP

When you use a travel agent for your travel plans, if there are any emergencies along the way, the agent will have given you several phone numbers to call for assistance. “I will give my customers a toll-free number to call if they have travel issues,” says Meyer. “I will also give them my phone numbers, too, but I call the same toll-free number that I give to them to solve their travel dilemma.” “There are a lot of people concerned about their safety and security on trips,” she says. “I can address their concerns when we meet.” While some agents recommend travel insurance for every trip, others will amend their advice according to the specific trip. “I recommend travel insurance, but it depends on the destination, current medical insurance and coverage,” says Phillips. “It can be very valuable when luggage is lost, medical or emergency issues arise, or there is a problem with a flight.” PROFESSIONALS QUOTED IN THIS ARTICLE:

The couple met through Kait’s aunt, who played matchmaker by exchanging their contact information while Kait was attending Boise State University and Conner was living in Washington state. “We spent months emailing and talking on the phone before we realized our relationship had developed to beyond ‘just friends,’” describes Kait. During the holidays in 2011, the couple met in person. A few months after Kait’s graduation from college, the couple became engaged, in November 2016.

After the reception dinner, the couple hit the dance floor. “Our first dance was so memorable; it felt like we were the only ones there,” says Kait. Spooky October wedding at castle

The windy weather caused the lights to go out during the wedding ceremony, fitting the spooky, haunted theme of the wedding. The ceremony continued in the dark, and the electricity quickly returned. Attendance was lower than anticipated because the meteorologists’ forecast scared away some of the wedding guests.

ACHARY “ZACK” AND LISA ROBTOY were married at

Thornewood Castle on a dark and stormy night, Oct. 15, 2016. “The day of the wedding was supposed to be the ‘storm of the century,’ which in reality ended up being some light rain and wind, but resulted in a beautiful fall evening,” says Lisa.

Despite the forecast, many family members came from across the country to show their support to the couple. “It was great to have our families meet for the first time,” says Lisa. The couple chose the fall wedding date because both love the month of October; it’s their birthday month. Zack’s birthday is Oct. 5, Lisa’s birthday is Oct. 10 and their anniversary is Oct. 15. Also, their nod to Halloween fit perfectly into their wedding month.

setting, matching the couple’s theme. “I have always loved Thornewood Castle, ever since I saw Stephen King’s movie ‘Rose Red.’ Zack and I both share a love and fascination with haunted houses and the spirit world, so we thought it was the perfect setting,” says Lisa. THEME AND DÉCOR: The fall wedding

Haunted-theme décor accents included pumpkins, with fresh flowers in fall colors, and skeletons. “It was important for us to host an event that made everyone feel comfortable, but also expressed our personal style as a couple,” says Lisa. The 50 guests enjoyed an indoor ceremony followed by a reception, complete with dinner and dessert. FAVORS: A black mesh bag was set at each

place setting. Each bag enclosed a lollipop decorated with a skull-and-crossbones design, the words “Till death do us part,” the couple’s names and the date. Tied to the outside of the bag was a card with the couple’s names and wedding date, tied with a skeleton key. Lisa works as a correctional psychologist, and Zack is a college student studying economics and philosophy. They make their home in Washington state. After a nearly yearlong engagement, they married at Brandon’s family’s beach property at Ocean Shores on Aug. 5, 2017. “Brandon’s mom, Karen Cassidy, basically did all of the planning and decorating,” says Katie. “She knows my style and how I like to decorate. It was absolutely perfect, and she made it really special and unique.” The vintage bohemian-style wedding was complemented with colors of lavender, yellow and deep red. “It was really important to us that our families were equally represented in décor and pictures,” says Katie. For the décor, Karen used a lot of vintage objects and memorabilia from both families, including white

gloves from the bride’s great grandmother and various antiques from the groom’s grandfather’s collection. The reception tablecloths were from family members, too. FAVORS: The couple gave coasters to

Westminster Presbyterian Church in Chehalis, the church where Anna’s grandmother and grandfather had been married 69 years earlier. “It was incredibly special for my grandma,” says Anna. “She had more than three tables of friends at the wedding!” The wedding took place Oct. 8, 2016.

Beach theme at November wedding

avid Sounders FC fans, were married Nov. 13, 2016, at the Town Hall at Seabrook, in Pacific Beach. The couple met a couple of years ago after a Sounders match, thanks to a mutual friend who introduced them. The two soccer fans found that “we had multiple things in common,” says Kati. Their other common interests include attending Dave Matthews concerts, drinking craft beer and watching the Seahawks. VISION: The couple planned the wedding

and reception with the aim of “having a good time with family and friends, including a good meal,” says Kati. “I wanted 58

to express ‘us’ and to be true to who we are — our personalities and likes. I feel this came through in the décor and the music.” “We also wanted to express our gratitude to our family and friends for their love and support,” says Kati. “We may not have done things in traditional order, but there was certainly love shown to us, and we wanted to reciprocate that feeling, and our thankfulness to all of those who supported us in finally making it official.” THEME AND DÉCOR: With Kati’s love for

all “beachy” décor, it was natural that she chose to be married at the ocean. The ocean venue and beach theme evolved into a

décor that included sand dollars, driftwood, starfish and oyster shells. “My grandparents lived on Puget Sound while I was growing up, and several items from their beach were used at the head table,” says Kati. In keeping with the beach theme, the wedding colors were shades of blue, aqua and turquoise, with white and silver. Kati’s signature blue color called “Kati color” by family and friends, is otherwise known as Baja blue.

kati & justin VISION: “I wanted to express ‘us’ and to be true to who we are — our personalities and likes. I feel this came through in the décor and the music,” says Kati.

VENUE: Kati works in the wedding and

event industry, so she wanted to use a less traditional setup. The 48 guests were seated on both sides of two long tables set near the sides of the room creating a center aisle for the ceremony. A conventional ceremony arrangement would have required a reset of the venue before the reception, since the November date allowed no outdoor option. The head table featured driftwood “Mr. and Mrs.” signs hanging from the back of the bride’s and groom’s chairs. “They were first used in my good friend’s wedding in Wisconsin,” says Kati. “I painted the Mr. and Mrs. in our colors, and now they now hang over our bed in our home.” As a nod to the groom’s favorite movie series, the cake topper had a Star Wars theme: “I Love You” and “I Know” lettering with silhouettes of Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia Organa and Harrison Ford as Han Solo. A beach-themed cake knife and server completed the cake table. The bar served wine from Dreaming Tree, Dave Matthews’s winery, along with assorted beers. “The . . . toast was very unique: I sourced blue [sparkling wine] (Blanc de Bleu), and guests toasted with a ‘Kati-colored’ toast,” says Kati. 60

GREEN TOUCHES: The couple used recycled beach glass in some of the décor, and the bride purchased some items secondhand. The linens were rented. China and silverware were used instead of disposables. Leftover food was packaged and brought home after the wedding, not thrown out. FAVORS: The couple gave favors of flip-flop

FAMILY AND FRIENDS: The couple’s family

members helped decorate at their wedding. “The individual touches that our friends and family contributed meant a lot,” says Kati. Kati and a good friend traded favors by serving as on-site coordinators for each other’s weddings (about four months apart). Kenyan couple honor God in colorful wedding

Kenya to Seattle, she didn’t know that her future husband, Karogo Gichaya, was living in Maryland. She felt unsettled in Seattle. Nyokabi says, “I prayed and fasted and told God if he gives me a husband, it will be confirmation that this is where he wants me.” Karogo’s aunt lived in Seattle, and she met Nyokabi. The

The couple says their wedding vision came to life. “We had so much fun, we kept saying we can’t believe it’s over already,” says Nyokabi. “We felt as if we hadn’t danced enough!”

FAVORS: Each of the 300 guests received a

custom candy box in royal blue with gold lettering. “The guest count was very small considering it was a Kenyan wedding,” says Nyokabi. Nyokabi works as an event planner and a nursing assistant, and Karogo is a pest control specialist. They make their home in Maryland.

The Orchard at Sunshine Hill, in Chehalis. They have known each other for many years. Since middle school, Hannah has been best friends with the groom’s sister, and during those years, she met Lucas. “I stole my sister’s best friend,” says Lucas.

The couple wanted to be married near where they grew up in Lewis County. “Because we knew each other for years and were friends before we got together, we have so many memories in Centralia and Chehalis, so getting married in the area was very important to us,” says Hannah. On their wedding day, they wanted to communicate their story to their guests. “Our officiant shared a bit of our story and 82

how over the years we stayed close friends but went our own ways and then how God brought us back together and how we fell in love,” says Hannah. “We also wanted to communicate how our faith is what keeps our relationship strong and how grateful we were to all our guests for the parts they played in our lives.”

VISION: “When we were planning our

wedding, we really took time to think about things that were significant and personal to us and incorporated those things into the wedding and reception,” says Hannah. “We wanted to be sure to have Lucas’s favorite root beer.” Their families were involved in the wedding, and all their siblings, nieces and nephews were in the wedding party. “Our sister-in-law is an amazing violinist and it was important to us that she played as I walked down the aisle, and Lucas’s sister, my best friend sang,” said Hannah. VENUE: The couple had one of the first

real weddings décor. Using the color scheme navy and gray, the décor followed a rustic motif. The couple and their families decorated open spaces with crates, lanterns, burlap and chalkboard signs. Among the couple’s favorite decorative touches were some old crates from Hannah’s grandfather’s blueberry farm. The bride’s grandfather made all the wooden rounds used as centerpieces. The bride’s sister made some chalkboard signs with the couple’s favorite Bible verse. The centerpiece and bouquet flowers were purchased locally and were arranged by Hannah’s sister, mom and two close family friends. The couple’s young niece and nephews — the flower girl and ring bearers — rode into the wedding ceremony in a decorated wagon. A friend catered the wedding and served cheesecakes for dessert because the couple prefers cheesecake to cake. Hannah’s mother made strawberry and blueberry toppings for the cheesecakes. A small cake was decorated with flowers and fruit for the cakecutting ritual. At the reception, the guests enjoyed making s’mores. SPECIAL MOMENTS:

ASEY AND GABE MOREN MET IN 1999, when they

were children. Their families were friends for years but lost touch when Kasey’s family moved to Skagit Valley. Kasey and Gabe re-established their friendship in October 2016 and began dating a few months later. They married June 4, 2017, at Gold Mountain Golf Club. The outdoor ceremony was held in a forested area of the golf club property. “We wanted to portray the love we have for each other as well as our love for Jesus Christ,” says Kasey. “Our ceremony was very Godcentered.” When Kasey’s dad had walked her down the aisle and she was standing next to him and her future husband, her dad read a poem he had written.

CEREMONY DÉCOR: “The

forest is so beautiful, with all of the trees and strings of lights, that we just added flowers to the arbor and mason jars with flowers on the wood stumps along the aisle,” says Kasey. RECEPTION DÉCOR: Using colors of steel

blue, mauve and taupe, the couple carried the rustic theme through to the indoor reception. A wooden pallet with their initials was placed behind the head table. The 250 guests sat at farm tables indoors.

Many elements of the reception were provided by family members. Kasey’s father made the wood arbor for the ceremony. Gabe’s parents made and painted a wood frame for photos. Kasey purchased flowers from a flower supply store in Tacoma, and she and her three sisters made the

After the reception, the couple and photographers went to Brownsville Marina in Bremerton to take a few pictures. “That was where we had one of our first dates, and it is where we were engaged, and now where we took our wedding pictures,” says Kasey. “I guess you could say that place is pretty special to us.” Kasey is a nanny, and Gabe is a retail manager. burgundy-satin archway. Vintage barrels, trunks, a large birdcage and cauldrons were along the sides. As guests entered the theater, a stunning 20-foot-tall, hand-painted, Hogwartsinspired castle appeared on the upper balcony. A forest of 9-foot-tall glitter trees,

its second public fundraising event, NEON, in June 2017 at Tin Can Alley in Tacoma’s Dome District. The 350 guests raised $50,000 to fund Spaceworks programs for Tacoma creative entrepreneurs, artists and makers. The NEON event featured a variety of performing artists, along with painters and other creative artists. While guests snacked on fresh oysters and other appetizers, they roamed the room to see silent auction items on display — many of which were art pieces or gift certificates for musical performances. Art patrons watched two artists in an art battle painting on large canvases. Guests purchased raffle tickets to get a chance at winning one of the artists’ paintings. “Three neon signs were custom-made by artist Galen Turner, at our request,” says Heather Joy, manager of Spaceworks. Those signs were displayed at NEON. For several weeks before the event, the signs were on display in the windows of the old Woolworth store to promote the NEON event. “We promoted to the guests that at 7:30 that evening, there would be mystery musical guests,” says Joy.
