publisher’s letter

Congratulations on your engagement!

As I prepare this magazine or meet couples at our wedding shows and wedding workshops, I love listening to the love stories. Every story is unique. But this year, more than ever, I heard a repeating mantra from the couples that reflects what I believe: “Your wedding is one day; your marriage is a lifetime.” It’s sound advice. Enjoy your fleeting engagement time. Like your wedding day, it passes too quickly! In this issue you will see local weddings featuring a variety of wedding themes, styles, colors and venues. I hope you find some inspiration in these beautiful pages. Our wedding dress and bridesmaid features are sure to engage you in conversation about what style of dress you want and what you want your bridesmaids to wear. We’ve paired the clothes with custom handmade jewelry, plus gorgeous floral bouquets. See the latest in hairstyles and makeup on these pages, too. The 1960s Bohemian look is making a comeback, especially in the Northwest, so check out the photographs of three very different looks from that era. Thanks to our local, highly skilled wedding professionals and our newlyweds, this issue has sound advice for newly engaged couples. In 2017, South Sound Wedding & Event magazine presents wedding shows in Bremerton and Olympia, plus the South Sound Wedding Workshops in Olympia and Tacoma. Check our websites for details: www.westsoundweddingshow.com, www.southsoundweddingshow.com and www.southsoundweddingshow.com/workshop. You will find more wedding inspiration on our social media pages: Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. Find the links on www.weddingandeventmagazine.com. I look forward to meeting you at one of our wedding events in 2017. Wishing you a lifetime of happiness,

Handcrafted Elegance Make a statement in this handcrafted necklace, right, made with nine strands of freshwater pearls, crystals, rhinestones and sterling silver chain. High-quality materials in a mixture of textures and sizes add appeal to the piece. This necklace features a modern brooch as an off-center focal piece. Because each Third Wish Studios design is custom-made, yours can be as bold or as simple as you like! This necklace, left, is handwoven, with hundreds of freshwater pearls and Swarovski crystal beads. Each is delicately wired to a sterling silver chain. The bold piece is perfect for a strapless gown and a truly elegant bride. We paired the necklace with simple drop earrings of freshwater coin pearls. Designer Rebecca Johnson customizes jewelry to fit your personality and style. This beautiful plum bridesmaid dress, right, inspired a quirky, retro design. The focal piece is a vintage 1970s brooch repurposed as a pendant. Freshwater pearls peppered with Swarovski crystal beads tie the design of the necklace and three-strand bracelet together. The bracelet easily becomes an everyday wearable after the big day. www.thirdwishstudios.com PHOTOS BY WALLFLOWER PHOTOGRAPHY | JEWELRY DESIGNER: THIRD WISH STUDIOS

Wedding emergency kits save the day

Wedding emergency kit F YOU DON’T HAVE A WEDDING DAY

emergency kit, someone in your wedding party is sure to need something that you will wish you had brought. To avoid that sinking feeling, plan ahead and bring items that you anticipate someone will need. Wedding coordinators and most venue managers and caterers have bridal emergency kits on hand; however, they may not include thread in your bridesmaids’ dress colors. When you pack specific personal items that you might need, you can prevent or solve potential problems, and knowing that you have these backup items will be of comfort to you. If the bride and groom are too busy to put together an emergency kit, they can ask a family member or bridal party member. When the items are presented in an attractive and useful container, such a kit makes a thoughtful wedding shower gift.

memorable wedding day. The definition of what is beautiful and memorable for some couples will be different from the definition for others. When you become engaged, talk to your loved one about what will be most meaningful — for both of you — to create your dream wedding. Your parents may have been married in a church and had a simple cake-and-punch reception in the church basement. Times have changed. Today most people marry and have a reception at a private venue, not a church. Weddings and receptions have become full-scale productions. While planning, determine if you want a simple, medium-size or large wedding. The next step is to determine your budget.

When planning your wedding, secure your venue, caterer and photographer first, as they are always the most likely to be booked a year or more out. Photographers closely follow a schedule on your wedding day to ensure you are getting all the photographs you want. “It’s important to involve your photographer in the process of creating and troubleshooting a detailed timeline of your wedding day,” says Scott Schoeggl, co-owner of Wallflower Photography. “It’s always good to have a little extra time built into your schedule so you don’t have to worry about being off by a few minutes from someone showing up late,” says Kier Smith, co-owner of Firstlight Photography. “A good professional photographer will be able to make up some of the time and keep things moving (a good reason for making sure you hire a professional wedding photographer), but the less you have to worry about this the better.”

getting them done before the ceremony while you’re fresh, then taking the family portraits after the ceremony.” For the reception, determine how much of it you want photographed. “If you aren’t doing a grand getaway at the end of the reception, you can save a lot of money just having the photographer at the reception long enough to cover the important events (toasts, dances, bouquet and garter toss) and anything else of importance, then let the photographer go,” says Smith. “This is also a good reason to make sure you hire a professional wedding DJ to make sure your reception flows smoothly and events take place on time so you don’t have to pay your photographer to stay for extra time.” “We strongly suggest getting a book made by the photographer, something that will be a physical copy of your photos,” Smith

adds. “We go [to] great lengths to preserve your wedding photos; however, a lot can go wrong with digital images, especially with technology changes.” WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A PHOTOGRAPHER

When meeting with photographers, find someone you like. “A wedding photographer plays a huge part in your wedding day and is at your side through most of it,” says Smith. “They are responsible for capturing one of the most important days of your life, and you want to make sure you are comfortable with them. Of course you want to make sure you like the style of their photos, but personality and the relationship with your photographer play a huge part in getting the best wedding photos.” “Find an experienced wedding photographer,” advises Smith. “You are looking for a person that will be responsible

When planning your wedding day photography schedule, it is important to decide where and when to shoot portraits of the couple, the wedding party and family groups — before the ceremony or after it. “My preferred method is to shoot the couple and wedding party before the ceremony and the family groups after, but every wedding is different,” says Schoeggl. “The wedding day timeline should also include a list of each family portrait that needs to be photographed, with the names of every person who should appear in it. All this advance planning really helps the wedding day go smoothly, and when that day finally arrives, it becomes your job to worry no longer and let the professionals you hired give you an amazing day.”

CORINA BAKERY RECOMMENDS TASTING AND STURDY CAKE STANDS

When choosing a bakery, Molly Ott, owner and general manager of Corina Bakery, recommends that you ask these questions: “Is the bakery located within a reasonable distance from the venue? Does it offer desserts for those with allergies (that taste as good as the rest)? Also, ask the expert, what is your cake serving-suggestion size?”

SOUTH SOUND WEDDING & EVENT MAGAZINE | 2017

Make an appointment for tastings with two to three bakers, so they can prepare the foods you prefer and need, especially if there’s a special dietary need. “We like to share this advice regarding wedding cakes: listen to the experts when it comes to the engineering and display of your cake,” said Molly. “Wedding cakes can often weigh upwards of 60 pounds. Many couples want to display cakes on pretty stands that weren’t engineered to bear the weight of a tiered cake. Therefore be sure that the cake stand will hold your heavy wedding cake.”

time, it’s important to have an open mind when trying on different dress silhouettes. “Bridal industry dress sizing tends to run on the smaller side, so don’t get too hung up on the size of the dress,” says Courtney Foreman, owner of Weddings With Joy. She recommends that you keep your entourage small while shopping. Leaving any children in the care of others, she says, will help the appointment go more smoothly. Foreman

If you plan to have an outdoor wedding, be realistic about climate and temperature. For an indoor wedding, pay attention to where the cake is displayed. Most wedding cakes are planted on tables in front of windows, causing them to be backlit. Find a space within the room that offers light to the front of the cake. That will ensure the cake is seen and photographed at its best! SHOPPING FOR YOUR WEDDING DRESS

Wedding dress stores usually also carry bridesmaid dresses, and some offer tuxedo rentals. When you find the stores where you want to shop, scheduling an appointment is highly recommended. Generally, most boutiques are small, so for the most positive experience, scheduling an appointment is recommended to ensure personal attention. When you shop, be sure to bring photos of wedding dresses that you like to help the dress shop consultant understand what you are looking for. At the same SOUTH SOUND WEDDING & EVENT MAGAZINE | 2017

ADVICE FROM WEDDING PROS

WHAT TO WEAR TO THE APPOINTMENT

It’s helpful to wear proper undergarments so you can get a good idea of how the dress will look. Be sure to wear shoes with a heel height similar to what you think you will wear for your wedding. Foreman recommends that you schedule only two appointments in a given day to make it easier on the bride. “Once you try on eight or more dresses per boutique and you like multiple dresses, all you’re doing is causing more confusion [for] yourself,” says Foreman. “You lose focus on what could be potentially your dream dress, if you’re caught up in too many bridal appointments in one day.”

WHEN WILL I GET MY DRESS?

It’s important to allow six months to special-order your dress. It takes three to four months for the dress to be made; then allow four to eight weeks for alterations. Sometimes dresses are already in stock with the designer, and for some dresses you can add rush shipping to receive them faster. WHAT’S THE COST FOR ALTERATIONS?

Once you have researched DJs and selected three to interview, set up in-person meetings to determine which DJ is the right fit for you. WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A DJ AND A MASTER OF CEREMONIES

A DJ plays music for your ceremony, reception or both, and a master of ceremonies (or emcee), who may also be the DJ, makes the announcements. “This is one of the most important days of your life,” says Becka Page, BPM Entertainment. “You are throwing a party for a large number of people to attend. Plan early to book a quality entertainer to make your event the most successful.” “This is the person you are hiring to be in front of all your guests the entire night with announcements and music,” says Page. “Your DJ can make or break your event. Pink Yarrow

17-2034

ANTONE HAS ANNOUNCED its spring

2017 colors for men and women, which you will find reflected in bridesmaid dresses, men’s formalwear and other items.

PINK YARROW, PANTONE 17-2034 Pink yarrow is a tropical, festive, stimulating color.

PANTONE Island Paradise

As you look at these colors, keep in mind that your monitor, tablet or phone does not give accurate representations of these colors. Color printed on paper reflects differently from fabric, so it is not reliable either. For the best representations of your wedding colors, use fabric swatches. Buy one yard of fabric—enough for you to cut out pieces to share with your florist, bridal apparel store, men’s formalwear store and other vendors. These are the top ten colors for men’s and women’s fashion for spring 2017:

14-4620

ISLAND PARADISE, PANTONE 14-4620 Island Paradise is a cool, blue-green shade of aqua that speaks of tropical settings and a desire to unwind.

TEN TIPS

What to look for in a wedding gown Research wedding gown stores to find stores in your region. 2 Make appointments at the stores you want to visit. 3 We recommend no more than two stores a day, so you won’t become overwhelmed with choices. 4 Be sure to bring one or two people whose opinions you really value to your bridal appointment. 5 Find a gown style that suits your body shape. If you aren’t sure, ask the sales associate. 6 While at the store, look at veils, hair accessories, jewelry and bridesmaid dresses. 7 When you find your gown, ask how long it will take to receive it. 8 If you find your gown at the first store, remember to cancel your appointment at the second store. 9 Determine what alterations you will need for your gown. 10 Ask for the store’s recommendations for stitchers to alter the gown. 1

GO GREEN

Environmentally friendly celebrations OING GREEN IS MORE than a trend;

it is a responsible way to live.

Some of the most elegant wedding menus and dining accouterments are already environmentally sound, and often less expensive. From using real dishes and cutlery, rather than disposables, to serving seasonal foods from local farmers markets and donating leftovers to charitable organizations, many green practices are very classy and eco-chic. FOR A GREEN WEDDING n Use recycled paper products for

invitations, save-the-date cards and other communications to guests. An alternative is to use emails for save-the-date announcements or invitation responses. n Flowers, bows and other decorations from the wedding can be reused for display at the reception. n If there is another wedding in the same venue earlier or later in the day, consider sharing flowers, bows and other decorations with the other wedding. n Candles from the ceremony can be taken home and enjoyed after the wedding. FOR A GREEN RECEPTION n Use china and silverware, not disposable

dishes or plastic flatware.

n Use tablecloths, napkins and other linens

that can be laundered and reused.

n Choose menu items from local growers

so that the food doesn’t travel far and you support local business owners and suppliers. n Use recycled paper for menus, place cards and other printed pieces. Better yet, find a creative way to identify guests’ places without using paper. Perhaps the wedding party or young girls and boys could escort guests to their seats, referring to a seating chart. n Consider sharing flower vases, glass chimneys for candles, or other reusable items with a friend’s wedding, reception or event.

n Use battery-operated LED lights on

tabletops. They give the illusion of candlelight but are reusable. (They are also safer than burning candles, which are prohibited by some venues.) n Schedule an outdoor event during daylight hours to lower energy consumption for lighting and heating. n Choose green favors — edible favors, seedlings in pots, native plants (trees or herbs) — in recyclable packaging. Instead of favors, consider charitable donations in the names of your guests. FOR GREEN TRANSPORTATION n Arrange group transportation for guests

from the wedding to the reception and from the hotel to the wedding ceremony. Rent buses, vans, golf carts, horse carriages, boats or other forms of transportation. n Organize carpooling for the wedding party and guests. n Hold your wedding and reception in the same location so no transportation is needed between them.

GO VINTAGE

Taking old things and making them into something new is an enjoyable and satisfying way to establish a green or vintage theme. Here are a few tips. Find old bridal gowns at vintage clothing stores or thrift shops. Perhaps a loved one has a wedding gown stashed in the attic, awaiting a second ceremony. Clean the gown, and then wear it as is, having it altered by a tailor to fit. To freshen or update the style of the gown, find a stitcher who specializes in reviving old gowns. For a classy ride from the church ceremony to the reception, look for a vintage car collector who can transport the couple in style.

CUSTOM CEREMONIES

Finding a wedding officiant to conduct your ceremony

Y

OUR WEDDING IS ONE OF the

greatest celebrations in your life — perhaps the greatest of all. It’s a day when you are joining with the one you love for the rest of your life. You are declaring your love and pledging your loyalty in front of your family and friends, telling them that you have found the one you love. It’s a great, important day. Who, then, will guide you through your ceremony and sign your marriage license? You have several options. If one of you is a member of a worship organization or denomination, ask your pastor, minister, rabbi, or priest (or similar official of any religious organization) — all seminarytrained clergy. For those who do not have a regular place of worship but want to get married in such a place, some religious venues accommodate weddings for nonmembers, though they may require that the couple have certain beliefs (e.g., belief in God or something larger than themselves). Many seminary-trained clergy will perform a ceremony at your venue; it doesn’t have to be a place of worship. For those who want a nondenominational ceremony, there are four options of people to officiate at your ceremony and sign the marriage license: 1. A Life-Cycle Celebrant™. 2. A wedding officiant who has a credentials and a certificate. 3. Justices of the supreme court, judges of the court of appeals, judges of the superior courts, supreme court commissioners, court of appeals commissioners, superior court commissioners or judges of courts of limited jurisdiction. 4. A family member or friend who has credentials and a certificate from an online provider of such credentials. Provided these officiants have the right credentialing, they are all qualified to sign a marriage license and turn it in to the county. 32

| weddingandeventmagazine.com

WHO WILL CONDUCT OUR CEREMONY?

When determining which kind of wedding officiant you want for your wedding, interview at least two to three of each kind to find the person who best suits you and your needs. “Ask hard questions and get a sense of personality and how an officiant does the work,” suggests Annemarie Juhlian, nondenominational minister and wedding officiant. She suggests these questions, “Does your officiant resonate with you? Does he or she express delight and excitement to know you better and to be a part of your wedding day? Does this person promptly get back to you via email or phone, and are they flexible, accommodating, creative and thoughtful?” To make a decision, Juhlian suggests, “Go with your gut. Go with an officiant who leaves you with the feeling of ‘this person has our back.’”

These questions apply to whomever you meet, no matter their official position. It is important to find the right person to conduct your ceremony. While meeting with potential officiants, ask them about their fees, so you know how much to budget. WHOM TO SELECT? WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? TRAINED CLERGY ARE UNIQUELY QUALIFIED

“We get specialized training in doing ceremonies and counseling,” says the Rev. Dr. Tammy Stampfli, The United Churches of Olympia. “Our weddings are faithbased: we believe in something larger than ourselves that people connect with in a spiritual way.” Stampfli requests that the couple meet with her three times before the wedding

“It’s an honor to be part of someone’s life transition,” says Stampfli. “It’s great to be a part of a community of faith and have your community there for you.” LIFE-CYCLE CELEBRANTS SPECIALIZE IN DESIGNING UNIQUE CEREMONIES

Life-Cycle Celebrants are educated and trained by the Celebrant Foundation & Institute. They study for eight months to two years to gain their certification. Celebrants officiate at every life event, including weddings and commitments, funerals and memorials, baby namings, adoptions and house blessings. They are educated in the history, creation and performance of ceremonies that enable couples to incorporate personally significant symbols, rituals and traditions.

They serve all faiths and cultures. “We are experts in blending multiple world views and finding the common threads that link all humanity together,” says Pamela Torres, certified Life-Cycle Celebrant.

Annemarie Juhlian

“Being nondenominational and ‘interfaithful’ in our approach translates to celebrants’ not having a dogmatic approach nor formulaic elements we must follow,” says Danna Schmidt, Life-Cycle Celebrant. “We have a more thoughtful and methodical approach to the ceremonial design, most especially because we are well-steeped in the anthropological aspects, mechanics and artful accoutrements of a well-ordered ceremony,” says Schmidt. “As a Life-Cycle Celebrant, my job is to dig below the surface and discover and then shine a light on their unique love and what is important to them,” says Pam Torres. “This process is a collaboration. With expert guidance, the ceremony is truly the fusion of their love story [and the] values and intentions that surround their choice to be married.” Rather than provide a list of options for the ceremony, the Life-Cycle Celebrant learns from the bride and groom what holds the most value in their lives and what symbols and themes they have in common. “Oftentimes I have couples who want something simple, but then through working with them, they ended up infusing several rituals in their ceremony,” says Schmidt.

Choose someone who is: 1. An experienced public speaker. 2. Dependable to show up at the rehearsal and wedding, lead the rehearsal and conduct your wedding ceremony. 3. A person you can easily work with to come up with the language for your ceremony, including your vows. 4. Willing to hold the ceremony script in a folder so that any nervousness won’t be apparent from shaking of the paper. 5. Responsible and trustworthy to sign the marriage license and return it to the county by the deadline.

Schmidt sends her couples a questionnaire. “It becomes a form of premarital discussions,” says Schmidt. Sometimes answering the questions is the couple’s favorite part of their time together as a couple. “I am all about new and different,” Schmidt says about her job. “I love that there are no two couples that are the same and no love stories that are the same. I’m a ritual freak, so I can conceive unique rituals. I’m a wordsmith, too, so I utilize my lyrical writing skills — so perfect for ceremony.”

rehearsal. She gives them a personality test so they can gain understanding about themselves. She asks the couple what topics they want to discuss, and then she advises them. “Premarital counseling is important; it gives you tools on how to better your relationship,” she says.

OFFICIANTS

Nontraditional officiants have a license and certificate they have received online. They may be ordained ministers of a religious organization that has no regular worship services. These officiants have varying amounts of experience. “Marriage is a big deal, and taking this lifetime step takes enormous consideration, courage and heart,” says Juhlian.

“I’m best suited for a couple who wants a ceremony that is real. I’m less about fluff and more about what is true. Given this, I love weaving together words and rituals within a ceremony that authentically celebrate a couple’s purpose, mission, beliefs and traditions. Family and friends love, embrace and remember a ceremony that has nuances of humor and grace.” JUSTICES, COMMISSIONERS, JUDGES AND OTHERS

• Historical house for smaller weddings and events

Justices, judges and commissioners have varying degrees of experience conducting nondenominational weddings.

• Park-like setting with view of Mt. Rainier

FRIEND OR FAMILY CELEBRANT

• Indoors or outdoors

To legally perform wedding ceremonies, family members or friends can get credentialing and a certificate online for a nominal fee. If you ask a family member or friend to perform the ceremony, there are things to consider. “When you are the best friend, you are part of the couple’s family system,” says Stampfli. “You don’t provide any perspective because you are part of their lives.” She says if the couple gets premarital counseling with a therapist, perhaps a best friend could officiate.

videographers are hired by the couple to capture the wedding and reception. Doing their jobs well is often challenging when guests with cell phones or cameras push in front of them to take photos. To avoid that scenario, consider confiscating all recording devices before the ceremony. Then guests can simply enjoy the event, and professional recorders won’t have to dodge others’ phones or cameras. 1. Post a sign at the entrance of the

ceremony asking guests to turn in cell phones, cameras and video cameras. If you prefer not to do this, go to number 7. 2. Ask two to four people to collect guests’ recording devices and put each in a bag with the guest’s name. 3. Ask one or two people to guard the precious devices during the ceremony. During that time, the bags can be arranged in alphabetical order for easy distribution after the ceremony. 4. After the ceremony, get at least four

people to dispense the devices. 5. The couple should be available at some point for guests to take photos of them, perhaps after the emcee has announced them at the reception. 6. If you don’t want photos taken during the reception, either, keep the devices safe during that time. 7. If you don’t want to take away phones and cameras, then request that guests not take photos during the ceremony. 8. Sign text suggestion: “Welcome to our unplugged ceremony. ADVICE FROM NEWLYWEDS

We are so happy with the way each little detail turned out — it was our fairy-tale wedding for sure — but one thing we experienced was we were so caught up with the bliss of the day, we could hardly stop to examine the decorations or notice how many people were there or if everyone got fed! Also, during planning there were definitely some regrets I had where I pushed ideas and wants so far that I didn’t take into account how my husband felt about it, or I even failed to communicate about it! Wedding planning can make or break your day together, depending on how well you communicate and listen to each other. I know a lot of prior brides can relate with this. So to all you brides-to-be, you’ve been dreaming of this day forever, but keep it simple! And keep reminding yourself it’s just one day. Stick with just a handful of ideas you’ve been dreaming of for your wedding and you won’t drive yourself crazy with a long list that keeps building. Trust me, you won’t be thinking about your guest count or that one decoration that didn’t make it on the table when you’re saying your “I dos.” It’s all about marrying your best friend and growing closer together from the experience. It’s an important day but a fleeting day. You have the rest of your lives together from here on out! Spend time during the wedding planning encouraging your spouse and doing little things to make his day. Laugh at your mistakes, have FUN and in the midst of the stress make time to get away and relax together!

The process will always go by fast and be stressful, no matter how much planning you put into it. The critical part is just to take the time to figure out what the most important things are to each of you so that you can ensure they are integrated into the ceremony and reception. Once you have a list of must-haves, then you can set your priorities and plan your event around those priorities. Also, never stop being true to yourselves. Advice and recommendations will always freely flow from friends and family, so don’t lose focus on what you want. Hopefully, you only get to do this once, so it should speak to you as a couple. If you follow your vision, it is sure to feel much more sincere, personal, and genuine — which you and your guests will undoubtedly appreciate! — CARDEN AND GREG GRIFFITH

1. Do not wait to start planning! 2. Remember why you’re getting married in the first place. Don’t get wrapped up in anything besides each other. 3. Don’t worry. Things will go unexpectedly. With that being said, you will still walk down that aisle and marry your best friend. 4. You will be busy during your day. That’s OK! First, the groomsmen and saber bearers lifted up the groom. “Then, not to be outdone, my brothers and cousins picked me up, and before I knew it, I was getting tossed in the air and moved around the dance floor seven feet in the air!” says Carden. “It was definitely exhilarating and made some of the best pictures. make their wedding rustic, romantic and ethereal, using natural earth tones with a touch of dusty pink and bronze. The reception decor featured hand-painted Mason jars, green hydrangeas, burlap, tulle, lace and small chalkboard signs on every table. The 140 guests signed a slice of a large tree trunk. Friends lent the couple a cross for the ceremony; it had been used at Easter Sunday worship services. The couple wanted a unity ceremony, so they chose to braid a rope. “Each strand of the rope signifies each person in the relationship: Jesus, my husband and me,” says Angie. “Our pastor explained the symbolism as we braided the rope. Our vision was to make it a wedding that was enjoyable for everyone and one that represented our personalities.” About 200 family and friends witnessed the three-hour ceremony beneath the mandap. “For me, [it was important that] the wedding and reception were done how we wanted it done,” says Prince. “Secondly, the music was important to me.” The wedding ceremony and reception capped a three-day weddingcelebration that involved many traditional Indian rituals, including a henna ceremony for Ellen. When her henna application was completed, Prince had a henna heart dyed onto his hand. After the wedding ceremony, the couple took time to rest. In the afternoon, they changed into other outfits for more photographs along the beach in Des Moines. RECEPTION DECOR: The wedding

reception began at 7 p.m. at the Kent Event Center, where 500 guests dined on Indian food. The reception colors were purple and green. A sofa and flower-filled arches served as a stage for the couple, as is traditional at an Indian wedding. Ellen and Prince sat there while they listened to speeches and enjoyed a performance by the University of Washington’s Bollywood dance team, called Kahaani. “It was awesome,” says Prince. “They are well known and compete on a national level. We were fortunate to have them at our reception.” SPECIAL MOMENTS: Ellen’s favorite

real weddings be plenty of options for places that guests could gather, games to play, food to eat and jams to get down to.” THEME, DECOR: Against the wedding decor

of neutral earth tones, the wedding party’s attire added color. The bridesmaids wore blush and cream shades, while the groomsmen wore outfits in green, blue and brown. One of Nolan’s favorite decorated areas was at the ceremony site entrance. There, beneath a tree, instant cameras were placed on a table with paper, so guests could take photographs and write love notes on the paper, and tape them into a memory book.. On a jute clothesline, friends had used clothespins to hang cross-stitch hoops filled with lace left over from Nolan’s wedding dress. Also hanging there was a woodburned sign handmade by Nolan. (Nolan + Barry, July 16, 2016) The flowers were purchased at an area farm and were arranged by the cousins of the bride’s mother. A friend of Nolan’s family served as the wedding coordinator, handling the events of the day. GREEN TOUCHES: Nolan found an old

glass door in her dad’s garage and used it for a table list to help guests find their seats. Barry’s aunt recycles used paper into new, handmade paper. “She collects flowers and presses them into the paper to create beautiful greeting cards,” says Nolan. “We were so blessed by her help and couldn’t have imagined a more perfect way to do the invitations.” Nolan’s dad and brother helped Barry collect ferns and cedar leaves for Barry’s aunt to use in the paper for the invitation cards. Nolan handwrote an invitation and photocopied it onto recycled copy paper to place inside each card. The couple handmade much of the decor, using vintage items from Nolan’s parents’ attic: old mirrors and old doors. The reception featured three food stations, representing Washington with a salmon dish, Iowa with pork chops and Texas with beef brisket. 82

Several family members and friends baked cookies for the wedding reception. Nolan’s mom and a friend of hers created succulent centerpieces, using Mason jars and other jars purchased from thrift stores. “We liked the look of the layers of little rocks that I collected in Austin, from my parents’ property and from my friend’s property on Hood Canal.” Noelle wrote every guest’s name on a rock. The rocks served as place cards and favors. “I thought it would be a nice keepsake for them, especially since I really love collecting unique rocks,” says Nicole. SPECIAL MOMENTS: Nolan wore Barry’s

She chose his grandmother’s dress because it was easier to work with. Nolan found a seamstress to alter the dress. “She treated this old dress so kindly and helped me keep the original essence of the dress while altering it a bit.” Barry’s youngest brother was performing in an off-Broadway production of “Pirates of Penzance,” so he couldn’t attend the wedding. However, he sent a life-size cardboard cutout of himself. It stood during the ceremony and later “danced” on the dance floor. “Barry was surprised with his brother’s cutout and didn’t even notice it until nearly halfway through the ceremony,” says Nolan. Nolan’s favorite memory was when Barry saw her for the first time in her wedding gown. “I also enjoyed feeling the joy in the air,” says Nolan. “Everybody was so happy to see each other and to meet one another.

were married Aug. 20, 2016, at St. Paul’s Church in Port Gamble. Their reception followed at the Hood Canal Vista Pavilion, down the street from the church. “We got to have a church wedding, dinner under the big tent and dancing under the stars overlooking the water,” says Sharon. The couple met on eHarmony and were engaged for a year and a half.

VISION: The couple’s vision for the

wedding was an elegant family party. “Family is very important to us,” says Sharon. “Most people speak of giving away their daughter or losing their son, but we wanted to demonstrate that we are truly joining families, and everyone we invited is an extension of our family.” During the ceremony the couple had a salt ceremony. The bride used pink salt while the groom used gray. They alternated pouring their colored salt into a clear vase. To the couple, it signified that they were joining two families into one. You or a family member can light a pillar candle on a table before or during the wedding ceremony. Acknowledge departed loved ones in the ceremony program by listing their names. Place framed pictures of loved ones on the guest book table, reception table or ceremony table. Place handmade photo charms in the bride’s bouquet, or the groom may wear a photo pin or hang a charm from his boutonniere. Local craft designers make these custom charms. Read a poem or share a memorable story about your loved one with your guests during your wedding or reception. Wear something during your wedding that belonged to your loved one — jewelry or a hankie, for example. At your reception, dance with your spouse to your deceased loved one’s favorite tune, and ask your DJ or master of ceremonies to dedicate it to your loved one. Professional officiants may have other suggestions; ask yours.

T A MARCH 15 AUCTION

in Tacoma, the Tacoma/ South Puget Sound chapter of the National Association for Catering and Events (Tacoma NACE) raised nearly $7,700 for the Emergency Food Network (EFN) to help feed the hungry in Pierce County.

“We were thrilled to raise funds for Emergency Food Network to help feed the hungry in Pierce County,” says Emily Cook, chapter president. “With EFN’s ability to produce $12 worth of food for every $1 raised, we were able to make a $91,500 impact to those in need!”

Park setting Seating for up to 400 guests Tables Chairs provided Choose your own caterer

Additionally, guests donated 410 pounds of food to the EFN at the event. The EFN is always in need of these foods: peanut butter, canned meat (tuna, chicken or salmon), soups with protein, canned fruit, canned vegetables, baby food, infant formula and granola bars. The fundraising event, “From Surviving to Thriving,” also raised more than $5,600 for scholarship funds for Tacoma NACE. “Funds raised for the Tacoma NACE scholarship fund will allow our elected leaders to participate in leadership training at our national NACE conferences, enabling Tacoma South Puget Sound NACE a more sustainable position for the future,” says Cook. ABOUT THE EVENT

Nearly 100 people attended the Parisianthemed dinner and auction, which featured decor by PJ Hummel & Co. and a Parisian-themed menu created by an Aramark chef at the Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center. Live music was performed by the Emmanuel del Casal Band, from Smooth Groove Productions, and the Solo Harp of Susan Haas. The event emcee was Adam’s DJ Service. After the auction, Rock-Bot provided live-music karaoke.

FIND VENUES, CATERERS AND OTHER RESOURCES

Some wedding and event businesses are listed on the websites of local visitor and convention bureaus. Some sites have pages dedicated to weddings. For a quick solution to finding a venue and a caterer, put together a list of your needs, and send it to the area’s visitor and convention bureau. Be very specific, including the number of guests and your preferences regarding the venues for wedding and reception, for example: indoors or outdoors, a single location, a waterfront venue, on-site catering (or not) and free parking. The staff will send a request for proposals to area businesses and will return responses that fit your needs.
