publisher’s letter
Congratulations on your engagement!
I enjoy talking to newlyweds about their love stories. As I talk to the couples, I hear their commitment and love for one another. When I look at their gorgeous photos, I get a little teary-eyed. I feel honored to be able to share their love stories. In this issue you will see a variety of weddings, from weddings in the forest to a wedding at a castle. Each wedding reflects two people’s interests and their hearts’ desire for celebration. I’ve noticed a few trends: many couples are hiring bands and musicians, all offer catered dinners, and many are creating their own signs and centerpieces. I hope these dynamic celebrations will inspire you to create the wedding of your dreams. South Sound Wedding & Event magazine offers many resources to help you plan your wedding, reception and events. In the last few pages of the magazine, you will find a list of South Sound wedding professionals who can help you with your wedding. Our website, www.weddingandeventmagazine.com, lists more South Sound wedding professionals. There you can also see more photos of real weddings, pick up tips and read an editor’s blog that keeps up with hot trends. South Sound Wedding & Event presents two wedding shows in January. You will see the newest trends in wedding design and décor. You will also meet highly skilled wedding professionals and will see the latest styles in two fashion shows at each show. To learn about our shows, visit www.southsoundweddingshow.com and www.westsoundweddingshow.com. In 2016, South Sound Wedding & Event is presenting the South Sound Wedding Workshop at various South Sound wedding venues. To find the next workshop, visit the Wedding Shows page at www.southsoundweddingshow.com/workshops. Be sure to visit our magazine and wedding show Facebook pages. Find us on Pinterest, Instagram, and at www.youtube.com/user/SouthSoundWeddings. I hope to see you at one of our wedding shows and at a wedding workshop. Wishing you a lifetime of happiness,

HAIR & MAKEUP
Look your best on your wedding day NCE YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONE
have selected your wedding date, wedding venue, caterer, photographer and florist, what’s next on your list? “Hiring a hair stylist and makeup artist is often an afterthought,” says Melissa Anderson, hair and makeup artist and owner of Chémel Salon. “Booking your hair stylist and makeup artist is as important as getting your wedding dress; it’s about creating an entire look.” Anderson suggests booking your makeup artist and hair stylist at least six months in advance of your wedding, especially if it will be during peak wedding season (May through September). “Brides want to look their best, feel pampered and special on their wedding day — and want to look great for their wedding photos,” says Anderson. Remember that wedding photos last a lifetime. “We know how to apply makeup to enhance your look for the camera; we know what the camera is looking for,” explains Anderson. “Makeup always shows up lighter in photos. We suggest that you wear 30 percent more makeup than you wear daily.” Brides often tell Anderson and her makeup artistry team that they don’t want to “look like clowns” on their wedding day. They won’t if they have professional makeup from a skilled artist who has the training and expertise to apply makeup especially for photography. “We want you to understand that we are creating an enhanced version of yourself,” explains Anderson. “Most brides want to look different than they look every day.”

Tips to prepare for professional wedding-day styling and makeup To have radiant skin and beautiful hair for your special day, it’s important to implement good hair care and skin care habits in advance. The weeks before your wedding n Avoid a facial within 14 days of your appointment. n Use no chemical straightener on your hair within a week of the wedding. n Get your eyebrows shaped and cleaned up at least 24 hours before your wedding day. n If you require lip, chin or eyebrow waxing, do it at least 24 hours prior to your appointment. The day before your wedding n Hydrate by drinking plenty of water. n Moisturize your face to prevent skin flaking. n Do not use self-tanner on your face. n Do not use shimmer anywhere on your face or body. n Get plenty of rest the night before your wedding. The morning of your wedding n Eat a well-balanced breakfast with protein. n Wash your hair, and dry it with minimal product. n If you have naturally frizzy hair, straighten it without a chemical straightener. n Use only a straightening iron with a heat protector product. No oils or heavy products. n Gently exfoliate face and lips. Make a sugar scrub with sugar, olive oil and lemon for lips. n Wash, tone and lightly moisturize face. n Don’t apply makeup before your appointment with the makeup artist. n Wear button-up shirts for easy changing without messing up your hair or makeup.
your hair — and do the same for your bridesmaids — can be a lot of fun. “Let us take some of the stress and concern from you,” offers Anderson. “Let us pamper you and your wedding party.”

ADVICE FROM NEWLYWEDS Even if you do it all yourself, hire a day-of coordinator. Ours was a lifesaver. Make sure they really “get” you as a couple and see your vision. Do your planning — the more detailed, the better — write tons of lists, create schedules, draw up diagrams, do setups at home and take pictures of how you want things to look. Then give it all to the coordinator and relax. Know that something will always go unexpectedly and that’s OK. It’ll be magical no matter what happens; just enjoy the day. Everyone told us it would go by so fast that we’d be lucky if we got to see or Try and stay calm talk to every guest. We didn’t believe them, but it’s all true. So just and enjoy yourself despite remember to take some moments to stand back and take it all in. the inevitable things that may — DANIELLE AND TRYG LITTLEFIELD always go a little “wrong.” — IOANA IONESCU MALCOLM AND SEAN MALCOM
The biggest piece of advice we can offer is to do what feels right to you. We are both very private people, so we knew that having a huge ceremony was just not right for us. We also knew that spending more than a year planning a wedding would cause us too much stress with full-time jobs and grad school! This was true for us, and may not be the same for other couples, but the message is still the same. Do what feels right, be honest with your friends and family about your plans, and remember that the day is supposed to be a reflection of your love and commitment to one another. We are so happy we went the route we did, and we wouldn’t do anything different if given the chance.
Be able to adapt. Everything will not always go as planned. Planning can also be stressful, so make sure to breathe and enjoy the moment. Remember this is your night. Everyone around you will have his or her own opinion and recommendations. In the end, do what you like and what is best for the two of you. — SITHA AND DERRICK TRAN

MONEY
Plan your financial future before you tie the knot
Y
OUR ENGAGEMENT IS A TIME to
plan your life together as well as your wedding. Once you decide to marry, it’s time to talk about money. “Today many engaged couples are living together, so they’ve combined their households into one,” says Ellen Bigelow, Bigelow Family Financial. ”Some have already combined their funds, while others may have separate bank accounts. Regardless of the existing setup before you marry, it’s important to discuss and plan your finances, not only for your wedding, but for the next few years.” According to a 2014 Trend study from The Wedding Report, couples contribute 58 percent of the money spent on wedding products and services, while parents pay 36 percent. The rest of the funds come from other loved ones. MEET TO PLAN
To begin the discussion with your loved one, talk about your financial situation and your goals. Do you have school loans or credit card debt? If so, share the amounts. What is your income this year? Next, talk about your spending habits during the past three months. Where do you spend your funds? Perhaps one of you enjoys golf while the other enjoys bicycling. Then you’ll need to budget for your hobbies and interests. Ask yourself if your expenses are within your means. Bigelow recommends the 50-30-20 guideline for spending: “Fifty percent goes to have-to expenditures (shelter, food,

them, be specific about who does what and when. REVIEW YOUR FINANCIAL PLAN MONTHLY
“The plan is a document that is reviewed regularly to see if you are staying on track,” says Bigelow. Set up a monthly time to discuss your financial plan and then go on a date to celebrate your discussion. “It should be something to celebrate — you are taking responsibility for your financial future — not something to dread,” she says.
Talk about whether you will have a joint account or separate accounts. A third option is to have a joint account for most expenses but separate accounts for fun, also called no-questions-asked money. Also, what is your spending discussion threshold? For example, can you spend up THE BEST ADVICE to $100 and not discuss it with your spouse? “I recommend that people in their 20s, or If not $100, then how much? early in their career, talk to an accountant or a financial planner,” says Bigelow. “Regardless of the existing setup before you marry, it’s important to discuss and plan your finances, not only for your wedding, but for the next few years.” — ELLEN M . BIGELOW
Ten tips for planning your finances 1. During your engagement, talk about your short-term and longterm goals, both personal and financial. Discuss how much money you each make. 2. Decide if you will combine your accounts, keep them separate or combine some but not all. Plan to have a combined emergency fund, and decide how much each of you will contribute. 3. Track your combined spending for three months before the wedding, so you will both be aware of your current spending habits. 4. Compute your combined net worth. positive event and not something to be dreaded.
5. Discuss attitudes about debt. If one or both of you have debts, plan how to tackle them once you are married. Check your credit reports together at annualcreditreport.com to make sure any errors are cleared up before the wedding.
9. Make sure there is room for fun in your spending plan. Don’t let necessary living expenses exceed 50 percent of your income. Plan to save 20 percent and allot the remaining 30 percent for things you want, but don’t need to live.
6. Decide on a dollar threshold for spending discussion. Any outlay over that amount should be discussed as a couple.
10. Meet with an accountant or financial planner together to discuss the impact of your newly combined finances on your taxes. If selfemployed, do you need to change your estimated taxes or change your withholding allowances with an employer?
7. Who will be the primary money manager in the household? 8. Plan a money date at least monthly to review spending and progress on savings goals. Make it a

Photo booths are popular at weddings and events
I
T’S FUN TO TAKE SILLY PHOTOS with
your friends at wedding receptions and events. In the past few years, more couples have been providing photo booths to entertain their guests at their receptions, and the takeaway photo strips double as favors. Most booths provide the entire album of digital photos to the couple at the end of the event, so they can see how much their guests enjoyed the activity. One of the most common photo booths is the portable “black box” booth. These booths are available from rental companies, which deliver and pick up the booths. Often an attendant is sent to help the guests and reload photo paper as needed.
PHOTO COURTESY OF CB PHOTOSHOOT BOOTH
Most photo booths — whether black-box or open-air style — offer the same features: photo props with a backdrop and printed photos for guests. Others offer the option of emailing the photo or uploading it to Facebook. Yet others allow guests to record a video to be sent to the party host. “It’s a great keepsake as well as a treat to the guests,” says Bonnie Miller, event specialist at Celebrations, the Party Store. Celebrations rents the blackbox style of photo booth and includes an attendant. There are other portable, fold-up photo booths that are similar to the enclosed black-box space but lighter in weight. OPEN-AIR PHOTO BOOTHS
One of the most distinctive photo booths available in the South Sound was custom-designed by Mike Abella, owner of 1000 Words Events. It’s a kiosk-style booth featuring an elegant tower that is illuminated from inside. On one side, guests stand to have their photos taken

while, on the other side, other guests watch the photos on a monitor mounted on the booth. “I designed the booth because when I was starting the business, there was no one selling photo booths other than the old-school photo-booth enclosures.” The booth includes professional lighting and cameras. Another feature is an adjustable tripod head, which allows the operator to move the camera to shoot subjects at various heights, including guests in wheelchairs. Props are provided, and each guest in the photo receives a print. Abella, a professional photographer, often
staffs the booth himself. If not, he sends an attendant. CB Photoshoot Booth offers a customdesigned open-air photo-booth service in Kitsap County. The booth’s attendant sets up the photo props for guests. A variety of products are available to clients, including unlimited photo strips offering three or four poses, online galleries, photo-strip frames and memory books.

Abella wanted to add to his photo-booth offerings, so he bought a 1968 VW van and installed a photo booth inside. He drives the van to a variety of gigs, including the Tacoma Rainiers Sunday home games, casinos, city events, corporate picnics, weddings and graduation parties. “What makes this booth different from anything out there is that it is a great conversation piece,” says Abella. “It seems like everyone owned a van at one time or another; I hear all kinds of stories while I’m running the booth.”

PHOTOGRAPHER PHOTO BOOTHS
Some wedding photographers offer photo booths at wedding receptions. They will provide and set up props and a backdrop.
Other photographers offer advice about where to purchase props and backdrops, but don’t provide them. Photographer Krystal Switzer, KS Photos, offers a photo-booth service in which a professional photographer takes the photos,
often capturing movement and candid moments. Immediately after the event, the photos are uploaded to an online gallery for guests and clients to review, share and download. She doesn’t offer props or backdrops, but will help select them and offer tips on where to rent or purchase them.

what advice do you have for engaged couples planning their wedding and reception?
1. Find your favorite spaces. We looked at so many venues by searching for “wedding venues” and came up short. We shifted our focus and made a list of the top 10 places that mattered to us as a couple, without regard to what was a “venue”. We thought about our favorite memories and moments together, and then we shaped our wedding ceremony around those precious memories. In the end, we had something perfect, instead of trying to just fit with a place that didn’t meet our identity. 2. In this age oversaturated with digital relationships, don’t understimate the value of true personal interaction. We shopped online for so many things, and found great “bargains”; however, nothing could truly meet our exact expectations with our very specific budget. We were so dependent on the idea that we needed to shop online, that we began to give up on some of the things we wanted for our wedding, but then we thought maybe we could check with local businesses. It is both with pleasure and also a bit of sheepishness that we admit that of course our local businesses were able to provide exactly what we needed, when the power of the Internet could not! A great example of this is the Lego minifigures that we wanted to give our guests, which is definitely a specialty item we couldn’t create on our own. We searched Amazon and eBay and asked around without any luck. However, once we went to Noel’s House of Bricks in Olympia and simply asked if they could meet our needs, the answer was immediately yes! cupcake 3. The size of your budget doesn’t equal the memorability of your wedding. Prioritize the few things that matter most to you, and focus your efforts there. For us, it was highquality photos, excellent food and live music. Those three things would “make or break” how we would feel about the wedding once it was over. 4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help — and say yes to help when it is offered! You will not regret having your best friend come over and spend hours upon hours making 120 paper cones! Also, when people offer to help you, if you don’t have a job for
them, then just ask if you can keep them in mind. We could not have pulled off anything, especially our reception, without the help of friends and family who were willing to do whatever we asked. We can honestly say that you will underestimate the amount of work it is going to take to pull off your wedding successfully. Just keep those people you trust close by for the moments when you need to grab someone reliable and say, “Hey, can you refill the drinks?” 5. Do not be afraid to DIY. With the availability of highquality paint, yarn, markers and other tools now, there is truly no reason why any person cannot pick up something from a neighborhood yard sale and turn it into a wedding centerpiece. We scoured Craigslist, OfferUp, Facebook groups and thrift stores for bargain items that seemed to be trash, but we turned them into treasure. Our greatest find was a discarded vintage metal mailbox. We handpainted it into a gift-and-card receptacle. This relates to point 2, depending on local business support, because we were continually at our local craft stores picking up supplies to turn our recycle projects into successes!

2016 colors for men and women, which you will find reflected in bridesmaid dresses, men’s formalwear and other items. As you look at these colors, keep in mind that your monitor, tablet or phone does not give accurate representations of these colors. Color swatches on paper “read” differently from fabric, so they are not accurate either. For the best representations of your wedding colors, use fabric swatches. store based in Portland, Oregon, that collects and sells donated wedding dresses, both new and used, at reduced prices. Fifty percent of the proceeds support Wish Upon a Wedding, a nonprofit organization that grants weddings and vow renewals to couples facing serious illness or a lifealtering circumstance. Local South Sound brides can help raise money for the organization’s cause by purchasing their wedding dresses from Brides for a Cause. The shop travels to Tacoma, SeaTac, Des Moines and Seattle about five times a year to give local brides an exceptional opportunity to shop from a wide-ranging wedding dress inventory. Each road show features more than 500 one-of-a-kind wedding dresses, with prices starting at $150.
“. . . a great option for brides on a budget and those looking for ways to help others during their wedding planning.” “We understand weddings can get very expensive. Our bridal store is a great option for brides on a budget and those looking for ways to help others during their wedding planning,” says Erin Scharf, owner of Brides for a Cause.
“Another great option is to donate your wedding dress after your wedding,” adds Scharf. Brides for a Cause is currently accepting wedding dresses from 2010 or more recent years. Donations are taxdeductible.

ADVICE FROM NEWLYWEDS
Remember to enjoy being engaged, Do what you want! Not what anyone else wants. It’s your wedding, and you only get married once! Do not be afraid to change your mind on things, either. It’s OK because the decision process takes time, and you will have more than you think! Finally, enjoy your wedding day as much as you can. It goes by so much faster than you expect, and all the facets you stressed over leading up to it really don’t even matter. — BRITTANY AND ZAK BAKER
WALLFLOWER PHOTO
what advice do you have for engaged couples planning their wedding and reception?
When you’re planning, it’s OK to remind each other that it’s your wedding, not anyone else’s, and it’s OK to say no. It’s easy to feel like you “have” to do something, or invite someone, but you don’t. It’s your wedding. Make it your own. That doesn’t mean it has to be expensive. Expensive dresses, decorations and food are a choice, not a must. A $6,000 wedding is possible! The one thing that helped us the most was to make two lists — (1) things that are important to us and (2) things that are not important to us — and read them during the planning process. Midway through planning, Amanda wanted to change her mind and spend $400 on white chairs; Ben reminded her that chairs weren’t originally on the important list. They ended up not getting the chairs and spent $400 extra on better things like top-shelf whiskey and gin. Amanda didn’t even notice the brown chairs at the wedding. Fancy chairs don’t actually make a difference. Happy people make a happy wedding! — AMANDA ANURAGA AND BENJAMIN MONTE CALVO
Really try to enjoy the wedding planning process. It’s so important to not stress the little things. It will be much more fun if you enjoy the decisions you get to make and think about what will make you two smile on your wedding day. I think a couple of times I was so overwhelmed with all the information, I struggled to make any definite decisions. After the wedding, I realized it was a really fun planning process and I should have savored those moments a little bit more. The planning process went by so quickly! That being said, don’t be afraid to delegate tasks to people you trust. It can be hard to not handle everything yourself; however, it also can be really helpful to have one of your family members or close friends do some of the research for you. When it’s time, you can give your opinion and make the final decision. This can really help if you do start feeling overwhelmed with unmade decisions. — KENDALL AND JESSE CUMMINGS

IND WHAT YOU NEED AT LOCAL WEDDING SHOWS
SOUTH SOUND WEDDING & EVENT MAGAZINE is presenting two wedding
shows in January 2016. Shows take place at venues that also host wedding receptions and events, and engaged couples may tour the venues while attending the shows. “Our wedding professionals’ displays will inspire you to create the wedding you have always dreamed of,” says Paula Lowe, wedding show producer. Expect to meet skilled wedding professionals at these midsize shows. The professionals in attendance are eager to talk with engaged couples and to help them plan their wedding or provide a service or product. “Wedding shows are a good place for couples to meet skilled wedding professionals and learn who they want to do business with,” says Lowe. “While you look at their photos and promotional

Almost half of our guests didn’t respond by the RSVP date, even though we’d given them both stamped RSVP cards and an online RSVP option. Fortunately, our coordinator had warned us that this My advice is to know yourself problem is becoming more and and your own needs. Well-meaning people, trying more common, and advised us to lower my stress levels, often tell me not to be so to give ourselves a few extra weeks concerned over details, but I know that being detailwhen setting the RSVP date. BANDS, BOOZE AND CARS BRIGHTEN WINTER EVENING PHOTOS BY WALLFLOWER PHOTOGRAPHY
W
INTERS IN THE NORTHWEST are often
rainy, dark and cold. To counteract the gloom, LeMay-America’s Car Museum presents Drive the Blues Away on a February evening every year. “A perfect way to chase away the winter weather blues,” says Ashley Bice, marketing
and communications manager for the museum. The event is held inside the museum, where guests can see the vast car collection. More than 350 people enjoyed the annual event on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015. Three bands performed: Little Bill and the Blue Notes, the Kim Archer Band and James King & the Southsiders. Craft cocktails using spirits from Washington distilleries were served, as well as samples from local breweries. Along with the beverages, guests enjoyed light gourmet bites by Pacific Grill. Each year, the museum presents several signature events that are open to the public. For information about the 2016 events, contact LeMay-America’s Car Museum. Military wedding ceremony at Chambers Bay PHOTOS BY WALLFLOWER PHOTOGRAPHY

The two describe their vision for their military wedding as “elegance and romance wrapped up into a good-time celebration.” About choosing their photographer, Zak says, “We wanted only the best, and we got the best.” Striking scenery was also important to the couple, as well as an officiant who was able to communicate their love for each other.
squares like deck plates on a ship are set in the middle of hallway floors. When Brittany and Zak Baker were students at the academy, they met on one of those deck plates. To commemorate their meeting, they stood on a deck plate during their wedding ceremony, on Aug. 31, 2014, at Chambers Bay. CEREMONY: During the ceremony, SOUTH SOUND WEDDING & EVENT MAGAZINE | 2016
the guests faced a sweeping view of the waterfront and mountains, with flowers framing the couple. Before the couple’s first kiss, the harpist played Taylor Swift’s song “Love Story.” As Brittany and Zak recessed from the ceremony, by military tradition, they walked through a sword arch created by the groomsmen. Their wedding colors, reflected in the flowers and décor, were peach, pearl and silver. weddingandeventmagazine.com |

MILITARY NODS: The tables
were named after legendary military units, bases or ships, to commemorate the veterans who attended the wedding. The cake was cut with a mameluke sword, the iconic sword of a Marine officer. After the reception, the couple donated all the flowers to a Veterans Affairs hospital. DANCES: Brittany and Zak’s
first dance was one that they had spent hours choreographing. They danced to John Legend’s “All of Me.” Later, a flash mob, led by the wedding party and joined by a few guests, danced to “Pumpin Blood” by NoNoNo. Both dances can be found on YouTube. SPECIAL MOMENTS: As something old
and blue, Brittany cut a heart-shaped piece from her father’s old blue shirt and sewed it inside her dress, over her heart. As a surprise, her father wrote on it, “I loved you first.” Heartland’s “I Loved Her First” was the song for their father-daughter dance. FAVORITE MEMORIES: “It was the
moment I saw Brit step out of the Rolls Royce in her amazing dress and looking absolutely gorgeous, causing me to tear up,” says Zak. “She was escorted by her father, handed to me by her father following the rendering of a ceremonial sword salute. I was finally getting to face my bride, take her hand and begin our life together!” 66

“My dad has always been a huge part of my life,” says Brittany. “I didn’t realize how much the two of us would be blubbering over me getting married.” Her father, who retired from the military as senior chief, inspired her and her brother to join the military. When she was young, her father had stage 4 lung cancer and almost didn’t survive. “He told me the reason he was so strong in the fight was so that he could live to walk me down the aisle,” says Brittany. “I could not have been happier that he was able to.” Zak wanted to salute Brittany’s father during the giving-away. “In the military, the enlisted salute the officer, but Zak thought it was important that he salute my father
because he was always the No. 1 man in my life,” says Brittany. “Zak knew how much my father meant to me, and it really meant a lot to me how much Zak respected and looked up to my dad. It was a unique aspect to our wedding.” Brittany is a supply corps officer in the United States Navy and Zak is a Marine Corps officer. They make their home in San Diego.

Kara-Ann had always wanted her grandfather and father to walk her down the aisle when she married, but her grandfather had died three years earlier. “He was always my biggest fan; he helped me purchase my pageant gowns and loved to see me in the spotlight, as I enjoyed him being in the spotlight with me,” says KaraAnn. To include her grandfather’s memory in the ceremony, Kara-Ann’s dad drove her grandfather’s blue truck through the field, with bridesmaids sitting on hay in the truck bed. Then the groomsmen helped the ladies out of the truck. Kara-Ann also wore a wedding garter her aunt had made from one of her grandfather’s favorite blue shirts. “It was such a special feeling to have a piece of my grandpa with us as we approached the aisle,” says Kara-Ann. “During our ceremony, we wanted our guests to see our belief in God and to know that God is the real reason the two of us were brought together,” says Kara-Ann. The ceremony was led by their pastor who read Scriptures and prayed with the couple and guests. Before eating, the pastor blessed the food. “Our family has a strong religious background,” says Kara-Ann. The reception and dinner were upstairs in the barn, along with the dance floor. Because it was very hot that day, people went outdoors after dinner. “We had a blast outside,” said Kara-Ann. When it was dark, there was a 30-minute fireworks show. DÉCOR: Kara-Ann designed and

what advice do you have for engaged couples planning their wedding and reception?
Relax! There are so many things that you want or envision to go a certain way, and it doesn’t always work in your favor. On the day of the wedding, all I could think about was walking down the aisle to my husband and saying our vows. All the little things that were such a big deal to me before were not a big deal anymore. My husband continued to remind me throughout our engagement — when I would be in tears about something I wanted or something that didn’t work out the way I wanted — that everything was going to be OK. Of course, at the moment, it was the end of the world to me, but on the actual day, the changes made our wedding better than I had imagined it would be. If you have a long engagement and plan to hand-make things, don’t waste any time. I felt like I had so much time that the first few months we didn’t really do any planning. I wish that we had started right away, because the last month was the most stressful, trying to get everything finished that I had started. Get everything in order a month before the wedding so that you can relax. Get a videographer! We didn’t have one, and it is my biggest regret. We chose not to get one because it was so expensive, but you could always have a friend video special moments of the wedding. A friend took a video on their cell phone of our whole ceremony, and I am so thankful that I have that small clip of our day. Of course we have all the photos to look back on, but a video is so much fun to watch and to show our children someday. Everyone wants to talk to the bride and groom during the reception. People kept pulling Paul and me in different directions to talk or to go outside, and we lost each other for a few hours of our wedding. Make sure the two of you sit down and talk about a plan for greeting all your guests and still having all the time you want together. After you eat dinner, go around to each table and thank guests for coming to the wedding. You can stay and chat for a couple of minutes and then move on until you’ve spoken to everyone. It is a great way to make sure that you greet all your guests and gives you a moment to personally thank them for celebrating your special day with you. If you have a vision for your wedding dress, don’t stop until you find it! It is out there, and you will find it. — KARA-ANN AND PAUL MULLER

Love of nature and community drives venue choice

ATHERINE “C.J.” PEARCE AND SYDNEY FORD PEARCE CONSIDERED carefully the
venues they wanted for their wedding and reception. They chose a woodsy feel that was very intimate for their wedding at Woodard Bay in Olympia on July 7, 2015. The relaxed wedding offered stunning views of the water and woods. “Our ceremony reflected our love of nature and our relationship with Washington . . . and the places we love to connect outdoors,” explains Sydney. “Woodard Bay showcases everything we love about the Pacific Northwest: forest, diverse animals, birds, privacy, Puget Sound, old-growth trees, history and more.” While the two brides walked on the Woodard Bay trail with their photographer, they felt peace. “We were laughing and singing and dancing in the forest without a soul around,” says Sydney. “We could hear and see the peace of nature surrounding us and catching the early joy of the morning in the sunlight, anticipating our ceremony ahead. . . . The bliss and beauty of Woodard Bay is truly unmatched. . . . It is a secret hideaway that we felt we ‘discovered’

because each time we are here it always feels private and secluded. Our ceremony perfectly captured that exact feeling, where we were saying our vows before nature, God and family, yet it also felt like we were the only people on Earth.” “I like to imagine these places as Lewis and Clark saw them, without any other human influence,” says C.J. “Woodard Bay is a place where you truly can picture the isolation that explorers could have experienced.” They held their reception a few weeks later, on Aug. 20, 2015. It was a fun-filled, familyfriendly event at the Jacob Smith House. They loved the unique, warm, vintage feel of the house. “Our reception highlighted Olympia (the city where we fell in love) and allowed us to contribute to our community by utilizing a space that told the history of our city, while giving back to the city,” says C.J. “Finding a venue that was operated through public means was absolutely our first choice, because we knew that the funds from our reception would help provide future community space to our neighbors.”

REATING A VINTAGE AND ROMANTIC WEDDING at the
ocean was the vision of the bride, Ioana Ionescu Malcolm. She and Sean Malcolm were married at Seabrook Town Hall on Aug. 22, 2015. The couple had been engaged for eight months. HOW THEY MET: Ioana moved to
Washington after 16 years in California. One day when she was visiting her parents, her mother suggested that she meet Sean Malcolm, who lived in the same building. Ioana and Sean had seen one another in passing when she visited. Ioana’s mom was hesitant to give Sean her daughter’s phone number, but Sean found Ioana through social media. Eventually they met and started dating. When Sean got to know Ioana’s father, who was terminally ill, Sean asked his 74

offers an intimate coastal destination with a small-town feel, showcasing Washington’s natural environment,” says Ioana. “Seabrook sits on top of beautiful cliffs on the Pacific Ocean and is surrounded by wind-swept evergreens and expansive beaches. Rustic, vintage backyard wedding celebrates family

HILE PLANNING THEIR WEDDING,
Alyssa and Jesse Sandwick determined that their goal was simplicity. “Jesse and I wanted the wedding planning to be simple,” says Alyssa. The couple married in a rustic-themed wedding in the bride’s parents’ backyard, overlooking Dash Point Park in Federal Way, on Aug. 15, 2015. With a guest count of 21, the pair kept the wedding budget to $4,000. “We didn’t want to spend a lot of money because we’d just bought a house,” says

wanted to find somewhere we could take pictures on the beach and have our wedding feel ‘beachy,’ while having the option of being indoors if necessary, since we can’t trust the Washington weather,” she says. When Kendall’s ring was passed to Jesse’s brother, he wasn’t anticipating the pass, and dropped the ring. “I think everyone’s hearts stopped for a second because we all thought it dropped through the cracks in the deck,” says Kendall. I associate words, numbers and ideas with certain colors, and certain colors trigger strong emotional responses in me,” says Sheena. She also wanted to include Tim’s favorite color, blue. 86

She spent hours shopping and researching to find the exact shade of pink she wanted for the bridesmaid dresses. Frustrated, she talked to Tim, who joined in her search. She finally found the right color, but the dresses were discontinued. Luckily, the manufacturer had one last bolt of fabric in that color and agreed to hold it until her bridesmaids called in their measurements. “I take my pink obsession very seriously,” says Sheena, “and we even made sure to have pink wine and pink champagne!”
VISION AND THEME: The couple’s
vision was for their wedding to be romantic, gorgeous and personal. The pair incorporated a lock-and-key theme, playing on Tim’s last name: Lockey.
“Tim is a self-described ‘hopeless romantic,’ ” says Sheena. “We are both very interested in visual aesthetics, and we wanted to have a wedding that we personally found beautiful. We wanted to express our personalities in every aspect of the wedding, and we also wanted to honor The blue colors were included in the flowers those close to us, our family and friends.” and in other elements. DÉCOR: As a nod to Sheena’s love of books,
the florist provided beautifully lettered signs and included books in displays. Sheena added some of her own books to the centerpieces.

and sent the image to the baker. “The cake is Tim’s personal favorite element of the décor,” says Sheena.
Sheena and Tim designed the centerpieces, which incorporated tablecloths, runners, napkins, ribbon wraps and more. Tim created a digital composition of the centerpiece displays and handed it to their day-of wedding coordinator, caterer, and florist, who put the displays together. “They did an amazing job of bringing it all to life on the day of the wedding,” says Sheena.
Tim gave each of his groomsmen unique drawings of themselves as figures in a postapocalyptic setting. The groomsmen liked their illustrations so much, they brought their artwork to the wedding, and they were displayed during the reception. “It may not seem to fit the rest of the décor,” says Sheena, “but it fits our deeper goal of having personalized touches that honor our relationship with those closest to us.”
MEMORABLE, UNEXPECTED MOMENTS:
The lock-and-key theme was carried out in several ways, including keys attached to escort cards, napkins embossed with a lock-and-key design and key stickers on the napkins. CAKE: Tim, an artist, was very involved
in the design of the cake, including the colors. He designed the look in Photoshop 88

At every wedding that Tim attends, he wears a black-and-white “Game Over” T-shirt underneath his dress shirt. During the reception, he takes off his dress shirt to show his T-shirt. He redesigned the shirt and made personalized versions for six of his closest friends to wear to his wedding.
On display were framed photographs of loved ones, including Tim’s dad. The couple left the reception in a 1972 blue Camaro that Tim’s dad had given him as a memento before he passed away in 2010. “Tim associates this car with his dad in a special way, and it meant a lot to him to be able to make our exit in it,” says Sheena. FAVORITE MOMENTS: Sheena and Tim
remember their speeches to each other as their favorite part of their ceremony. The speeches followed their traditional vows. Though prepared separately, the speeches turned out to touch on the same themes: “how well we complement one another, how much we trust and confide in each other, how we are each other’s best friends

and how much of a ‘sappy romantic’ Tim is (and how much I love that),” says Sheena. Her other favorite moment is when the soloist sang, “From This Moment On.” Tim’s other favorite memory is the “first look” they had privately before the ceremony. Sheena is a doctoral student in Russian literature and a Russian language instructor at a university in California. Tim is an artist and a student of 3-D computer graphics and game design in California. Lacey. They were engaged for a little more than a year and were married on July 4, 2015, at Chambers Bay. Their wedding was a couple of weeks after the U.S. Open golf championship at Chambers Bay, where thousands of people watched the event. At the time of the wedding, not all the temporary buildings and bleachers had been removed. It was very hot on their wedding day — nearly 100 degrees during the ceremony. Fortunately they were able to use the

air-conditioned USGA hospitality pavilion from the U.S. Open. Earlier in the day, Sitha wore two different Cambodian dresses for a photography session with Derrick and their wedding party at the Courtyard by Marriott Tacoma Downtown. DÉCOR: Using colors of coral, teal and
gold, the florist created a flower-decorated arch for the ceremony. Coral-colored sashes were attached to some ceremony chairs. Fresh flowers were on the reception tables, in Mason jars painted teal.
FAVORS: The couple gave guests a variety
of cookies from Meconi’s Italian Subs in Lacey, Sitha and Derrick’s favorite sandwich restaurant. After the reception, there were fireworks over the water, which everyone enjoyed. MANDA ANURAGA AND BENJAMIN MONTE CALVO had a vision for
their special day. They wanted to create an easygoing wedding with forest and flowers while integrating Indonesian food and culture to honor the bride’s heritage. They describe their wedding theme as a campfire dance party.
where they shared a Valhalla brownie. “We served Valhalla brownies from Corina at our wedding,” says Amanda Anuraga. The couple married on May 30, 2015, at Kitsap Memorial State Park, celebrating with 150 friends and family members.
At their wedding, Amanda and Benjamin wanted to convey this idea: “Real love is The couple met at Pacific Lutheran University simple, genuine, fun and playful. A true while they were students there. One of their reflection of love doesn’t have to be flashy first dates was at Corina Bakery in Tacoma, and expensive.” 92

ECO-FRIENDLY: Amanda purchased her
dress and veil from Brides for a Cause for only $280, and it needed no alternations. The company gives 50 percent of its proceeds to Wish Upon a Wedding.
The wedding budget of $6,000 meant supporting local, eco-friendly resources whenever possible. A whiskey and gin bar was made from recycled doors. The cups, plates and flatware were purchased on Craigslist after being used in another wedding. The couple camped at Kitsap Memorial State Park along with family and friends. branches from my parents’ house and fresh market flowers and lavender from Pike Place Market,” says Amanda. Plus, each table had a different black-and-white picture from various camping, hiking and kayaking trips. LIVE MUSIC: Ben and his groomsmen
arranged an instrumental version of “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles. Benjamin started it with a banjo solo. The music built as the groomsmen, one by one, reached the front of the aisle and began playing the other instruments: bass, drums and two guitars. The processional was the opening theme to the movie “Star Wars” (a Monte Calvo family tradition). “Our first [dance] song planned, unfortunately, did not work on the iPod playlist. (Ben didn’t like the song anyway.) So our officiant and best friend, Mariesa Bus, ran across the dance floor and chose Hall and Oates’ ‘Kiss on My List,’” says Amanda. “It was unexpected and perfect.” During the reception, Amanda’s “awesome aunts” instigated a double conga line. “Everyone in the log hall joined in, and it was amazing,” says Amanda. “There was a lot of laughing!” HUMOROUS MOMENTS: Alex, the groom’s
brother and best man, performed Bill Pullman’s epic speech from “Independence Day” and then returned to his table. “He never mentioned the bride, groom or weddings at all,” says Amanda.
ENLIGHTENED MOMENTS: It rained the
morning of the wedding as the couple was making breakfast on the camp stove. The minute the photographer arrived, the sun came out. After the reception, the bluegrass band that had played at the reception visited the group camp and continued the party around the campfire with family and friends. FAVORITE MEMORIES: Orchestrating
the opening musical number with all the groomsmen was hard because they all lived in different states. The plan was to play the song to start the ceremony and for Amanda to walk down the aisle to the music. “As all our guests started to arrive and I was standing up front all by myself, I began to feel ill with nerves,” says Benjamin. “I ate a granola bar quickly, stuffed the wrapper in my pocket, picked up my banjo and started to play. Luckily, once I started playing and my groomsmen joined me, my nerves left and the song sounded great. My best man discreetly removed the wrapper that was half sticking out of my back pocket during the ceremony, to avoid awkward pictures.” Amanda says, “I loved the quiet moments: My mom helping with my hair, drinking champagne and getting dolled up with my favorite women in the world, the couple seconds with my dad before we walked down the aisle together, standing at the end of the aisle and watching Ben play his heart out for me. I loved our officiant’s ceremony and how there was a lot of laughter and storytelling. My papa’s speech was a tearjerker, not a dry eye in the house. My favorite

was being able to be surrounded with your favorite people in the world, dancing and showering you with love in the sunshine. Amazing.” FAVORS: There were two wedding favors.
The first was a magnet made of wood from the hedge in Amanda’s parents’ backyard. As a wedding present, the couple’s friends Emily and Kaitlin burnt a heart and “A+B 2015” onto each wooden magnet. “They were beautiful,” says Amanda. The second favor was a packet of seeds for organic edible flowers. Amanda is attending graduate school in Seattle, and Benjamin is a field and trail specialist with a trail greenway organization. They make their home in Seattle. VENUE: Kitsap Memorial State Park CATERER: Waroeng Jajanan FLORIST: Le and Me Design CAKE: Corina Bakery BAND: Woodland
