SS. PETER AND PAUL CATHOLIC SCHOOL BUILDS UP THEIR TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

SS. Peter & Paul Catholic School, located in Hamburg, has spent the last year establishing their technology foundation. In the beginning of the 2011-12 school year, SS. Peter & Paul had one underused Smart Board. Now there are currently 13 new Smart Boards, seven iPads and a revamped computer lab, which features 25 new computers. A Smart Board is an interactive whiteboard that uses touch detection for user input – e.g. scrolling, right mouse-click – in the same way normal PC input devices, such as a mouse or keyboard, detect input. A projector is used to display a computer's video output on the interactive whiteboard, which then acts as a large touch screen. The school has outfitted elementary teachers, junior high teachers, and even some specials with Smart Boards in their classrooms. “We are excited to bring Smart Board technology to SS. Peter and Paul. These Smart Boards have increased student participation and attention during class,” said Principal Patrick Riester. “The more interactive the lesson, the more they want to do it,” added Technology Teacher Aaron Odden. While students are more engaged in the classroom, there were other technology concerns that needed to be addressed throughout the school. “The computer lab was in need of some tender love and care,” said Riester. “We gave a presentation to our Pastor and when the green light was given to the project, the business manager, technology committee and I set forth to build a functional lab to help instill 21st century skills to our students.” During the summer of 2012 work began on updating the computer lab, which featured a brand new paint job and the addition of 25 new computers and seven iPads. “With all the work it took this summer, I’m excited to see the students use the new materials,” said Odden. Students will have the opportunity to learn new stateof-the-art computer software. They will also have the opportunity to learn the latest computer skills for high school and college preparation. One of the seven iPads that the school received was a gift from the graduating Class of 2012. Students will now have the opportunity to be able to work in groups utilizing the iPads with various interactive lessons. The iPads are also mobile and teachers are able to sign them out and integrate them in their classroom instruction. “I am very pleased with the way our teachers have taken to the new technology. The teachers have attended multiple professional development programs and have really worked hard to incorporate the technology in their lessons,” said Riester. The new technology has been at

SUPER SLEUTHS NEEDED

The photo reflects the North Collins Masonic Lodge dated somewhere in the early 1950’s. Do any of these men look familiar? Some have passed on. Some are missing. Some may simply have retired from public life. Can you help us? Here is what we think we have. Seated in the front row, 2nd from the left is Jimmie Holland; 3rd from the left is Edwin “Sonny” Holland and 4th from the left is Ernest Wilson. In the middle row, we believe the 2nd man from the left is Charles Harms. Standing in the top row, we believe the 1st man on the left is Tony Mullay, with the 5th from the left being Carleton Hunter and 6th from the left, Jay Palmerton. The Historian from Fortune Lodge needs your help. If you can positively identify any of these men, please call either Brad Ring at 627-2510 or John Eggen at 992-3899. And one more thing, thank you, and help us refresh our past memories. ____________________ tributed to generous donations from SS. Peter & Paul Parish, Parent’s Guild and the Kyle Reid Memorial Foundation. The Kyle Reid Memorial Fund has made many donations to SS. Peter & Paul School. The fund was established in 1999 after Kyle Reid, an eighth grade student at the school, lost his battle with cancer. The funds were obtained by a 5k run and golf tournament held annually. There have been donations to sports programs, school facilities and scholarships. In November of 2011 the funds bought two Smart Boards and in March 2012, another two boards were purchased. “These boards are an asset to teachers and students at SS. Peter & Paul School,” said the Reid family. “It has been a privilege to help other students in Kyle’s memory.” While the new technology has improved learning in the classrooms of SS. Peter & Paul School, Riester stressed the importance of quality instruction. “The Smart Boards enhance good teaching, they do not replace it,” stated Riester. Riester does hope that more cutting edge technology is on the way. “I look forward to continuing to add technology like more Smart Boards, iPads, and other 21st century classroom aides,” said Riester. ºPictured above is Jillian Stapleton of Eden and David Friedrich of North Collins. __________
