Legislator Mills’ Hot Dog Roast Events raise $67,077 in 10 years
What started out with a $1 hot dog 10 years ago, turned into 64 fundraisers and thousands of dollars raised for rural library branches in Erie County. Legislator John Mills, Chairman of the Erie County Legislature, was proud to be joined by Buffalo & Erie County Public Library System Director Mary Jean Jakubowski and Angola Public Library Director Jennifer Page, Eden Public Library Director Donna-Jo Webster, Concord Public Library Director Bridgette Heintz, Town of Collins Public Library Director Abigail BartenMcGowan, Orchard Park Public Library Director Peggy Errington and Boston Free Library Director Lydia Herren to announce that with overwhelming community support his Hot Dog Roast Fundraisers have raised a grand total of $67,077 over the past decade. “When I got into the Legislature, I knew I wanted to find a way to help raise ‘wish list funds’ for the library branches in my district, to help buy the extra items the annual budget wasn’t always enough for. I never expected we’d be raising well over $1,000 at a single event by selling $1 hot dogs but because of the community’s support and donors’ generosity, we did just that,” said Legislator Mills. “I couldn’t be more proud of the partnerships that have grown and I can’t thank the community enough for coming out every year to support our libraries. Ten years of outstanding fundraisers is something we can all be proud of.” President of J. Mills Distributing, a local food distribution company, Legislator Mills said the idea first came to him when he was driving across New York State for his private business. He decided on a hot dog roast, buying the product with his own money, and partnering with Sahlen’s Hot Dogs to use their event grill. If you visit any of the branches in Legislator Mills’ district, you’ll see the results of his fundraisers. The beautiful hand-painted mural in the children’s area at the Eden Library was supported with these funds, and money raised at the fundraisers was put toward the multi-purpose community room, a much-needed addition at the Angola Public Library. After an extremely harsh winter, the Boston Free Library utilized the funds for muchneeded structural repairs and equipment that will help ensure the library is safe to use for years to come. Furniture, materials, and programming, especially for the children’s areas, were also all possible due to Legislator Mills’ annual event. “We commend Legislator Mills for his generosity during the past decade,” said Library System Director Jakubowski. “Libraries are all about community and Legislator Mills has done a terrific job of bringing people together for the good of the community.” The totals for the individual branches are as follows, with 10 events held: Concord $11,710; Collins - $10,345; Orchard Park - $10,014; and with five events held: Angola $5,952; Eden - $5,864; North Collins - $5,231; Boston - $5,088; and East Aurora - $4,077. In the 2005, the Aurora Public Library’s West Falls Branch closed due to reduced funding; subsequently volunteers from the community opened the West Falls Community Library. Legislator Mills, having represented the area before Legislature redistricting in 2011, wanted to continue to help and held fundraisers for the community library from 2007 to 2015 and raised $8,796. For information on the Hot Dog Roast Fundraisers, or to speak with Legislator Mills, please contact his Legislative Office at 858-8850 or email john.mills@erie.gov. ___________

On May 14, the Eden Conservation Advisory Board sponsored a public workshop dealing with exotic-invasive plant and animal species that pose a variety of threats to natural landscapes, public health and property damage. Presenters at the workshop were Sharon Bachman of Cornell Extension discussing exo-inv animal species, and Andrea Locke of PRISM, who discussed exo-inv plant species. ‘Exotic’ implies an animal or plant that is not native to a locale, while ‘invasive’ implies a plant or animal species that spreads prolifically, displaces native species in the natural community and damages ecological balance and stability. As a result of contacts made at that workshop, I spent 2 days in late August working with Andrea Locke and her field team mapping and photographing exotic-invasive plant species at Franklin Gulf County Park on Larkin Road at the Eden – North Collins town line. PRISM (Partnering to Protect WNY from Invasive Species) teams survey public lands in WNY to identify and map locations of exoticinvasive plant species, to determine the extent and severity of the problem with an eye toward prioritizing control strategies. I have hiked Franklin Gulf with my dogs on many occasions, and consider it to be in good ecological health. But I was eager to get the expert opinion, and appreciate Andrea and the PRISM group fitting Franklin Gulf into their busy schedule. So how did Franklin Gulf fare after the mapping surveys? The results were very encouraging! Because much of Franklin Gulf has full tree canopy coverage, exotic-invasive plants have not penetrated the interior of the park to a great extent. Even along the trails and the stream corridors, openings where exotic-invasives are often able to get a foothold, the species found were not yet pervasive and heavily established. Exotic-invasive plant species found most often included Japanese barberry and multiflora rose, with lesser occurance of bush honeysuckle and mugwort. At existing levels of infestation, these species would be manageable and their control feasible. In the future, resources and effort can be directed to keep plant and animal communities at Franklin Gulf natural and healthy! ___________

Brant Town Board honors Leah “Flossie” Mirusso with a dedication at the Brant Summer Festival
In May 2016, the Brant Town Board voted unanimously to dedicate the baseball field at the Brant Town Park as “Flossie Field”. Leah ‘FLOSSIE’ Mirusso was a Town of Brant resident for well over 50 years and served her town for 34 of those years. Her political career began in the 1950’s as town clerk and tax collector serving for 11 years. Later, in 1978 she ran and won the position of town councilwoman, maintaining that position until her retirement in 2002. She served the town for three decades, and during that time added Deputy Supervisor to her list of titles. Leah “Flossie” was also one of the original members of the Brant Fire Company’s Ladies Auxiliary, the Strawberry Festival Committees and she was a member of the original recreation committee which was instrumental in the purchase of the land that is now the Brant Town Park. She was a big fan of baseball, and loved the sport so much that she became a certified Western New York Umpire! According to her daughter Rosalee “Tish” Hill, “Flossie lived life to the fullest and made every moment count.” On June 18, 2016, at the 13th Annual Brant Summer Festival, the four town councilmen, Brant Summer Festival attendees, family and friends of Leah Mirusso and two Evans Youth Baseball Teams gathered together for a special presentation held at the baseball diamond in the Brant Town Park. Representing the Town at this ceremony, councilman Don Clark read aloud the town’s dedication plaque, which was later presented to Leah’s family members. NYS Assemblyman David J. DiPietro was also in attendance and he read aloud the NYS Proclamation which highlighted Leah’s many accomplishments, then proclaiming this 18th day of June as Leah Mirusso Day in New York State. This too was presented to Leah’s family. Don Clark in his closing words stated that, in honor of Leah’s accomplishments for the Town of Brant we dedicate the Brant Town Park ball field as “Flossie Field.” At this time, a large sign secured on the ball diamond’s backstop, was unveiled for all to see and read: “FLOSSIE FIELD - PLAY BALL”! In commemoration of this special day, the Brant Summerfest Committee had special made baseballs and mini bats printed with the words “Flossie Field, Town of Brant, June 2016”. Each of the youth baseball players were offered a choice of one or the other. Flossie’s family were presented with both the Flossie Field baseball and mini-bat. Following the ceremony, the Evans Youth Baseball Teams continued on with the last innings of their game…however this time, they were playing on the newly dedicated “Flossie Field”.

Brant-Farnham Historical Society Display at Farnham Community Days On September 3rd, 2016 the Farnham Veterans Park located on Commercial Street, saw a steady stream of visitors enjoying the all day festivities, when the Farnham Volunteer Fire Department sponsored their First Annual Community Days in the Smallest Village in Erie County – Farnham, N.Y. Farnham is celebrating their 124th Anniversary Year of Incorporation. An exhibit provided by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society, was a favorite visitor stop. In the historical society tent, the most popular display consisted of Farnham Grammar School photos and photo albums of various classes and school related groups from the late 1800’s thru 1977. Every alumni was excited when they found themselves in one or more of the Farnham School photos. Those who stopped in, were asked to sign the mat frame of the Farnham Elementary School(s) which they attended. There was a photo of the “old wooden” Farnham Grammar School (1892-1946, K-8) which was destroyed by fire and a photo of the more “modern” Farnham District 5 Elementary School (1948-1977). The modern school replaced the wooden school, but was demolished in 2013. The Dollar General on Erie Road in Farnham (kitty-corner to the Farnham water tower), is located on the site where the schools once stood. There were numerous signers of the “modern” Farnham School photo and FIVE visitors/signers who once attended the “old wooden”(1892-1946) Farnham School: Josephine (Spratz) Battaglia, Raymond Dunkel, Marilyn (Ahlers) Russell, Marion (Brant) Berns and David Berns. All were happy to sign the frames and the historical society was thrilled and honored that they did! Both frames will again be available for signing at future historical society exhibits. The historical society has been fortunate that so many people have donated their school photos, with Frank Zeffiro and Yvonne Heller being the most recent donors. Other items on display in the Brant- Farnham Historical Society tent were related to the following Farnham topics: Farnham Ladies Drum Corp, Farnham Fire Department, Clint Holmes-entertainer (born in Farnham, N.Y.), Farnham Businesses, Canning Factories, WWI Military Training Camps, Railroad and Trolley information, (Did you know that President Lincoln’s Funeral Train carried him through Farnham?), hotels, stagecoach stops, churches, cemeteries, stores, Post Office, Brownie and Cub Scout troops, restaurants, and various items too numerous to mention. However, by far the “biggest hit” was the Farnham School table. In honor of Farnham’s 124th Year of Incorporation (18922016), 124th Anniversary Farnham Postcards, provided by the Historical Society were on hand and free to all those interested. The 124th Anniversary Postcards are still available for free at the Farnham Post Office and the Brant Town Hall and Farnham Village Hall until they run out. Farnham 125thAnniversary celebrations will be planned soon. Watch the Pennysaver for more information in the upcoming months.

More Fall Fun Facts
Welcome Fall
• Fall is a peak migration time for many species of birds. During autumn, birds will fly to other areas as they seek more hospitable climates. The Arctic tern journeys about 11,000 miles each way for its annual migration. That is like going all the way across the United States about three and a half times. • Contrary to popular belief, squirrels who have spent the entire autumn collecting acorns and other foods do not hibernate for the winter. Rather, they spend the majority of their time in nests they built to shelter them from harsh weather. When squirrels do come out in winter, they are usually tunneling under the snow to find the food they buried during the fall.

• Several cultures have ancient traditions that coincide with autumn. For example, the Chinese celebrate the Moon Festival to give thanks for a successful summer harvest. • Halloween is a large part of autumn. The concept of wearing masks and costumes hails from ancient Celtic tradition. The Celts believed ghosts roamed on Halloween, and people wore disguises to hide from the spirits. • You’re bound to see pumpkins as part of autumn decor. The pumpkin was first named by the Greeks. They called this edible orange item “pepon,” which means “large melon.” • Evergreen trees will not lose their leaves like deciduous trees. Their leaves, also called needles, are covered with a thick wax. This wax protects the inner components of the needles, preventing them from freezing. • Autumn also signals another colorful spectacle apart from the tree leaves. The aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, tends to be visible this time of year. This is because geomagnetic storms are about twice as likely to occur during the fall thanks to cool evening weather.
