Carol L. Jimerson

Frances M. Price Frances M. Price, age 94 of Hamburg, NY died peacefully at home July 31, 2016.

She was formerly of Eden, NY and Florida. She was the devoted wife of the late William E. Price. Frances was born on December 15, 1921 in East Brady, PA to Catherine and Ignatz Pugar.

Frances married William Price in 1942, and they moved to Buffalo for jobs.

During WWII, she worked for Curtis Wright Aircraft Corporation as a parts inspector. In 1958, Fran and Bill bought Central Service Texaco station in Eden, NY which they operated until their retirement in 1978.

Most of her life was devoted to her family. Frances is survived by six daughters.

Patricia (Michael) McNell, Judith (Thomas) Spencer, Barbara (Brian) Baird, Jane Price (Donna Menz), Joan (Robert) Cluckey, Jacalyn Price (Peter Crosby). Nine grandchildren: Kenneth (Kelly) McNell, Elizabeth (Brian) Rogers, Edward (Kelly) McNell, Catherine Spencer, William (Catherine) Spencer, Jeremy (Lisa) Baird, Jonathan Baird, Patrick (Brittney) Cluckey, Colleen (Daniel) Frawley.

And 13 great grandchildren.

Friends attended a Memorial Mass on Friday, August 6th at 11:30am at Immaculate Conception Church, 8791 S Main St, Eden, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Hospice Buffalo.Online condolences may be shared at www.laingfuneralhome. com ______

Also survived by nieces, nephews, 1 great nephew and friends. Funeral services were held August 3.

Edison was a WWII Army Veteran, exempt member of CIRVFD, member of American Legion Post 1587 and member of VFW Post 6472. _______

News from New York State Division of Military & Naval Affairs

Members of a task force with the New York Army National Guard's 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team successfully completed the rigors of a force on force training exercise here July 29 and began heading home this week.

The troops, with more than 5,000 participants from more than 30 states across the country, spent nearly the month of July at Fort Polk as part of the training rotation at the Joint Readiness Training Center, known as JRTC. Their experience included deployment and staging at Fort Polk followed by more than ten days of offensive and defensive missions in the post maneuver areas against a real opposing force. The maneuver training is designed to challenge all the components of the maneuver brigade, including infantry, artillery and aviation operations, engineering and reconnaissance tasks, logistics and resupply and medical support and personnel replacements. The brigade task force included the entire New York Army National Guard brigade combat team, along with supporting infantry units.

New York Army National Guard Sergeant Howard Armbruster, from North Collins, N.Y., completed training here as part of the Delta Company (Forward Support, Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition), 427th Brigade Support Battalion and redeploys back home this week as the brigade task force completes the training exercise.

New York Army National Guard Specialist Garett Keitz, from Eden, N.Y., completed training here as part of the Charlie Troop, 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry (Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition) and redeploys back home this week as the brigade task force completes the training exercise.

The Joint Readiness Training Center allows Army units to conduct combat training in a realistic environment which features a well-trained opposing force, civilian role-players on the battlefield, high-tech systems which monitor the action, and observer-controllers to evaluate unit actions. All of the exercise participants and opposing force troops wore the Army's Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System (MILES) gear for the exercise. The gear consists of a sensor-leaden harness worn by the Soldier and a halo of sensors attached to the Soldier's helmet. In addition to sensors, every weapon system also includes a laser emitter. When the Soldier fires a blank with their weapon, the laser fires a beam. If a target sensor receives a hit, then the Soldier is considered wounded or a vehicle disabled, requiring all of the combat response actions to provide first aid and evacuation. The MILES gear enables infantrymen to conduct realistic combat training against a real enemy opponent and forces combat medics and logistics personnel to hone their skills by treating simulated battlefield injuries or evacuating damaged vehicles. JRTC is one of the Army's three combat training centers at which brigade-sized units can conduct realistic training against an opposing force. JRTC specializes in light infantry warfare and operations. For Soldiers, it is considered by Soldiers as the Super Bowl of Army training. ___________

Fond Memories of Eden

Helen (Brown) Ormsby, age 99, Eden Class of 1935, may be living 500 miles away from Eden (in Centerville, MA) but memories of Eden occupy a special place in her heart.

The great-great-granddaughter of John Hill [17781848], the founder of Eden Center, Helen grew up on a farm with her grandparents on Gowanda State Road and Roswell Parkway (named after her great-grandfather, Roswell Hill, [1802-1890]) after both parents died of TB when Helen was only 4 years old. Her mother, Berenice (Clark) Brown [1892-1921], was Valedictorian of her 1910 Eden High School graduation.

Helen was Captain of the 1934-35 Eden High School Championship basketball team and was asked to speak at the 1935 Eden graduation on “The Importance of ExtraCurricular Activities”.

In addition to raising her 4 children, Helen was active in many community and civic organizations, was an accomplished gardener, bridge player, tennis player, and in the last 5 years started writing poetry and some of her poems have been published. In support of the Eden Alumni Association, in 2005, Helen purchased and dedicated a bench for the Alumni Memorial Wall honoring her father-in-law {Edgar Ormsby} and brother-in-law {Wallace Ormsby} who were both Superintendent of Schools Erie County for many years {1919-1971}. With fond memories of life in Eden, the Eden Corn Festival and “Beef on Weck”, Helen sends warm wishes to all Eden Alumni.. ___________
