LOCAL BUSINESS FEATURED

Eden’s Four Corners Café was recently featured in the Cheap Eats section of The Gusto and earned a score of four out of five pennies. Here are some excerpts from the article, which was written by Anne Neville, Buffalo News Staff Reviewer: This place is adorable, starting with the red, white and blue bunting-decorated exterior. Inside the large, comfortable dining room with wood accents, you get a real sense of place from the glass cases that display model train cars and decorated with names of local businesses and even a couple churches. But wait, what’s that sound? It’s another model train chugging around the room on a track just under the ceiling. The country decor had us smiling, and the menu continued the trend. The rural nature of Eden is reflected not only in some of the down-home choices - sausage gravy, country biscuits and a Hungry Man breakfast - but also in the prices. That country biscuit breakfast, with two eggs, sausage gravy and home fries, will set you back just $4.39; an order of two pancakes is just $2.99. Speaking of that Hungry Man breakfast ($5.59 for two pancakes, two eggs and ham, bacon or sausage), there’s also a Hungry Woman breakfast ($4.59 for one pancake, one egg and bacon, ham or sausage). There is also a choice of specialty pancakes (two for $4.09, three for $5.29) made with either chocolate chips or M & Ms. Talk about a child-pleaser! This is definitely a family-friendly spot. Our efficient server sped by with a coloring book for a restless youngster. When a cup of tea was ordered, a small basket with an assortment of tea packets was produced, along with a steaming metal pot of hot water. Nothing that we saw on the menu tops $10, not even the steak and eggs ($7) or the truly exceptional-sounding Italian omelette, made with ham, Italian sausage and provolone ($6.99). The prices, in fact, were so reasonable that John, Pat, John and I ordered five breakfasts because we couldn’t resist the description of the French toast, made with a hint of vanilla and cinnamon ($4.98). This bonus dish was set in the middle of the table while we each dug into our already generous meals. But we made a substantial dent in the French toast, too. It was delicious, with plenty of rich egginess and a slight crunchy crust. The ham and cheese omelette ($6.99) also got high marks. It arrived steaming, filled with delicious, highquality diced ham and melted cheese, with a side of hot home fries. A simple breakfast of two pancakes ($2.99) and a side of meat (we chose bacon, $1.99) was perfectly cooked. The corned beef hash was the classic preparation with tiny bits of potato and onion. The hash breakfast ($5.49) included two eggs, cooked over medium, as requested. This was ordered with thick slices of Texas toast, perfect for dipping into yolk. The final choice of the breakfast skillet included eggs, home fries, sausage gravy and cheddar, but we weren’t exactly sure how those ingredients would be combined. The answer is: brilliantly. The eggs were cooked into a flat disc, which was laid into a shallow bowl and filled with homefries, topped with a generous serving of sausage gravy studded with plenty of bits of breakfast sausage, then sprinkled with grated cheddar. The combination was not only creative, but delicious. We have heard about the excellent homestyle dinners served here on Wednesdays and Fridays, as well as desserts. It seems as though a trip back to Eden might be in our future. FOUR CORNERS CAFE Where: 8571 N. Main St., Eden (992-4347) Hours: Opens at 6 a.m. daily, except Sunday, when it opens at 7 a.m. It closes at 2 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday; at 8 p.m. on Wednesday; and around 8:45 p.m. Friday Wheelchair-accessible: Yes

BLUEBIRD NESTING BOX WORSHOP

The 9th Annual Bluebird Nesting Box Workshop was held on Saturday, November 3rd at the Eden Town Hall. There were 38 in attendance. Mary Jane Bolo explained that the reason we are fortunate to have bluebirds is because of the committed people who will make boxes for them to nest in. Bluebirds will be sighted in our area by March 15th, if they have not wintered over. By March 30th, the female will accept the box, and bits of grass will appear. By April 22nd, she will begin to build the nest. By April 29th, she will lay 5 blue eggs, usually one a day. By May 18th, there will be young hatchlings, and both parents will feed dawn ‘til dusk. The young will have fledged by June 6th, and the nest should be removed to make the box ready for the next brood. Bluebirds prefer open space, and the box should be placed at eye level. Under Mike Bolo’s direction, the participants began to construct the pre-cut boxes, step by step. There was much excitement as the boxes began to take shape. Paul Shea, from “Eden Drawer and Door,” 2720 Hemlock Rd., Eden, helped us cut out the pieces, and the Eden Conservation Board financed the event. Refreshments were enjoyed by all. Boxes are available from the Bolos. Call 992-9456. __________

BUFFALO CANALSIDE PROGRAM AT HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The evolution of Buffalo’s waterfront from the early 1800’s to the present will be the topic for the Evans Historical Society meeting on Monday, November 26th at 7 p.m. Mr. Mike Vogel, a local resident, will provide a power point presentation on the early “canal side” life in Buffalo. The interesting and sometimes rough lifestyle along the Buffalo Lake Erie port and the Erie Canal terminus will be represented. Mr. Vogel is a retired editor of the ‘Buffalo News’ editorial page after a long career at the News. He also serves as President of the Buffalo Lighthouse Association. Ms. Anderson indicated that Mr. Vogel’s book will be available for purchase at the meeting. The program will be held on Monday, November 26th at 7 p.m. in the Evans Historical Society Museum (1857 school house) on Route 5 in Evans Center. The public is invited, refreshments will be served, and there is no charge for admission. __________

EDEN FIRE DEPARTMENT and EDEN POLICE GROUP would like to express their heartfelt thanks to our community for your overwhelming support and response to our 2nd Annual Chicken Barbecue and Chinese Auction. Also a special thank you to our sponsors for their generous donations. Because of all of you, our event was a huge success and again, we thank you. Hope to see you next year, Sunday, November 10th.

Does Class Size Matter?

Sale Real Estate Houses For Sale

19 studies can scientifically document several important findings about a reduced class size: • Smaller classes in the early grades (K-3) can boost student academic achievement. • A class size of no more than 18 students per teacher is required to produce the greatest benefits. • A program spanning grades K-3 will produce more benefits than a program that reaches students in only one or two of the primary grades. • The Eden G.L.P. K-2 has class sizes up to 25.

If we want what is best for our students, shouldn’t we start here?

In Memory of

DAVID P. HAIDON II My son turned 20 yrs old on 11-122007, 15 days into his 21st yr. he left us. We all loved him and still miss him. I never knew how many lives he touched until he was gone. I have learned so much more since his passing than I could have on my own. Please don’t forget him and all our children who have gone too soon. Remember them in your prayers! We miss you son.
