SCS IS EGGSELENT

Southtowns Catholic School's art teacher, Mrs.Terri Walkowski, taught the grade 5 class the technique of paper mache. They took plastic eggs and covered them with paper mache. When the eggs dried, the kids decorated them in any way they wanted. Pictured is Jaclyn Kauzala, Sally Berry, Kyle English & Walt Rybczynski. _________

SCS CELEBRATES EARTH DAY

Students in Southtowns Catholic School's Grade 3 & 4 class cleaned up the area all around the school. Miss Lori McIntyre & Mrs. Jennifer Hills took their students outside and split them into groups. Some picked up the playground, part of the class walked around the parking lots and a few walked the edge of the woods. The kids found boxes, plastic bags, plastic bottles, large pieces of rubber and part of a chair. They learned a valuable lesson about recycling and to always pick up after themselves. Pictured: Nicholas Iglewski, Gavin Herman & Marina Travale. __________

SCS CELEBRATES RIBBON DAY

SOUTHTOWNS CATHOLIC STUDENT DONATES TO LOCKS OF LOVE

Grade 2 student, Taylor Skretny, donated 10" of her beautiful red hair to Locks of Love. She saw a Roswell Park commercial and wanted to donate her hair to the little girl on TV. Pictured is Taylor Skretny with her pony tail.

Southtowns Catholic School Grade 8 students celebrated Ribbon Day with a special Mass. As fate would have it, we were lucky enough to have Bishop Richard Malone celebrate the special Mass. Ribbon Day is the beginning of the final stages of preparation for graduation. The students receive this ribbon as a symbol for hope for their future. The blue piece represents Mary and the gold piece represents our Church. Pictured here are: Claire Koessler, Bradley Darvill, Hunter Skoczylas, Bishop Malone, Molly Skalski, Evan Mangan, Mrs. MacDonald, Father Peter, Eli Tremblay, Matthew Argy, Nick Ralph, Evan Herman, Elliott DiChristopher. ___________

GRADE 4 CLASS HAS A MYSTERY READER!

Mr. Timothy Kehoe surprised the fourth grade class at Southtowns Catholic School as a Mystery Reader. Mr. Kehoe shared one of his favorite chapter books, Encyclopedia Brown. This a fantastic book because it is a collection of mysteries that the reader tries to solve. In the picture is Christian with his father. _________

Southtowns Catholic School got a very special visit from Bishop Richard Malone. He spent more than 2 hours going to every class from Preschool through Grade 8. Bishop Malone would enter the classes and received Rock Star attention from the students. They were so excited that he was coming and some asked to shake his hand. He asked the kids how they liked SCS, what were they learning and what their favorite teams are. (He is a Red Sox fan) The kids could then ask him anything from “how did he like being Bishop” to “where did he grow up”. Grade 3 is learning about New York State and he asked the kids what the state bug was. They said the “lady bug” and they stumped him with the question of “what is the Maine bug” - it’s the honey bee. Pictured here is Grade 2 students Brady Hill, Zack Jones, Trinity Kehoe, Anthony Nance, Teresa Smaldino and Matthew Stadler with Bishop Malone as the explained to him what the Resurrection Eggs were.

Legislator Mills announces local collection sites for National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Erie County Legislator John Mills reminds residents that the annual Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is on Saturday, April 27 and several sites across Erie County will accept medications from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration and supported by several local agencies, National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day collects thousands of pounds of drugs and disposes of them properly. In 2012, a total of 488,395 pounds of medications were collected across the country. “There are expired and unwanted prescription drugs in homes across our communities that pose a hazard. By dropping off these items at the Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, we can remove the risks associated with these drugs collecting in homes. Millions of Americans suffer from prescription drug abuse and they often find the drugs in the homes of friends or family members. If you have any prescriptions that need to be disposed of properly, please stop at one of the several sites that Erie County will be hosting,” said Legislator Mills. Local collection sites include: •Orchard Park Police Department collecting at Mercy Ambulatory Center, 3669 Southwestern Blvd., Orchard Park, NY 14127 •North Collins Police Department collecting at North Collins Police Department, 10543 Main St., North Collins, NY 14111 •Erie County Sheriff’s Office collecting at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, 224 E. Main St., Springville, NY 14141 For additional information or to search additional collection sites, please visit www.dea.gov.

My name is Paul Shephard, and I am running for school board. I have lived in Eden all of my life, except for the eight years I served in the military. My wife and I both graduated from Eden, and there was no question where we would live after we were married. In the past, I have been a member of both the Eden Fire Department and the Emergency Squad, where I held several positions for many years. I have a vested interest in this town and more importantly, in this school district. I would genuinely like to serve on this school board so that I can make sure that the tax dollars I am paying are benefiting the students of our district and helping to ensure that they have a successful future. I can assure you that I will listen to all parties involved, and I will do my best to work cooperatively with all involved. I would be humbled and honored to represent the students and taxpayers of Eden.

Vote line 2 - Mrs. Krouse and line 4 - Mr. Shephard on May 21, 2013 We will listen, we want to help improve the transparency of the Eden Board of Education.

WE NEED YOU!!

ATTENTION EDEN RESIDENTS RECYCLING IN THE TOWN OF EDEN

It has recently been brought to our attention by Waste Management the Town’s solid waste and recycling hauler, that there is barely a 50% participation rate by our town residents when it comes to recycling. In 1992, the Town adopted a MANDATORY RECYCLING LAW (in compliance with the Solid Waste Management Act of 1988) that requires residents to make accumulated municipal waste AND recycling available for collection. Recyclable materials should not be placed in the same container as solid waste (garbage). The safe, clean disposal of solid waste is a dilemma facing every community and is an important public concern. Reduction, reuse and RECYCLING of solid waste is an important solution which will aid in the protection and preservation of the environment. If you no longer have a blue recycling bin, you may obtain one from the Supervisor’s PLEASE RECYCLE - ITS THE LAW!!!!! office at the Eden Town Hall.
