MAY IS MOTORCYCLE SAFETY & AWARENESS MONTH:

A message from Chris Jacobs, Erie County Clerk This is a perfect time for motorists and motorcyclists to learn about safely sharing the road. The warm weather is approaching, daylight hours are longer -- spring is finally here. Motorcycle riders everywhere are polishing their bikes and getting ready for warm weather and the open road. Motorcycling is a popular choice for economical and convenient travel. They are inexpensive to operate, fun to ride and easy to park. In Erie County alone, there are more than 22,000 registered motorcycle riders who use their cycles for commuting, touring and recreational activities. I want to remind all motorists, especially new drivers, to be on the lookout for motorcycles and to share the road with them safely. Car and other vehicle operators must be alert to the presence of motorcycles on the road. Since cyclists often ride to one side of the lane and the cycle can hide in seemingly empty areas, I encourage all motorists to be aware of the car’s blind spots. Carefully check before turning or changing lanes and look two or three times before making a move. Allow more following distance for motorcycles -- two or three car lengths is recommended, more if the roads are wet or visibility is poor. Unfortunately many riders never learn the critical skills needed to ride safely. Before hitting the road this driving season, I encourage all motorcycle riders to visit any of the Erie County Auto Bureaus to get properly licensed and to register their “bikes”. For more information on motorcycle licensing and registration please contact the Erie County Auto Bureau Call Center at 716/858-7450 or visit us at www.erie.gov/clerk and click on the Auto Bureau tab. Additionally riders should also take a moment to review the aspects of motorcycle safety- wear protective gear at all times, including a helmet, ride within your skill limits, ride unimpaired and become a life-long learner by brushing up each year and taking refresher rider courses. Together, the more we raise awareness, the more we keep motorcyclists and all motorists safe! Riders can benefit from a Motorcycle Safety Program rider safety class offered at several local locations for both new riders looking to learn and experienced motorcyclists who want to pick up tips. Class locations and fees can be found at www. nysmsp.org. On behalf of all drivers, I urge everyone to use caution when sharing the road this summer. Let’s ride smart, ride safe, and enjoy the season. __________

HAROLD McGRATH, RACE CAR DRIVER KNOW AS “STROKER McGURK,” COLLISION SHOP OWNER

People in North Collins and nearby communities knew him as Harold McGrath, the friendly and soft-spoken Korean War veteran who ran a busy collision shop. But to auto racing fans, he was “Stroker McGurk,” the hard-driving competitor who battled it out for decades on race tracks all over Western New York and Southern Ontario. Mr. McGrath, widely considered one of the best race car drivers in local history, died Monday in his North Collins home after a short illness. He was 80. During a racing career that spanned 23 years, he won hundreds of races and numerous championships, mostly on the race tracks at Holland, Perry and North Collins. In 2001, the FOAR Score Club, made up of local auto racing enthusiasts, named Mr. McGrath - whom they knew as McGurk - one of the top 25 drivers to compete in Western New York over the past century. FOAR Score also named him to its Hall of Fame. “He loved racing, but what he really loved the most was the friendships he made on the track,” said his wife, the former “Frenchie” Garcia. “McGurk loved the parties. He called those people his racing family.” Born in Buffalo, Mr. McGrath was raised in North Collins, where he attended school and graduated from North Collins High School. Soon after graduation, he entered the Army and shipped overseas to fight in the Korean War. After his military service, he briefly worked in a Buffalo factory before starting his own collision shop in North Collins. He ran the shop, which he called “McGurk’s Collision,” until retiring in 1999. From the early 1950s until 1975, Mr. McGrath drove race cars in Western New York and Southern Ontario, sometimes competing in Pennsylvania and Ohio. He was especially well-known for the wheel-to-wheel battles he had at the Holland and Perry tracks with Art Clark and Dick Flaig, who were fierce competitors but also two of Mr. McGrath’s closest friends. Early in his racing career, Mr. McGrath adopted “Stroker McGurk” as his racing nickname, and most race fans had no idea that his real name was Harold McGrath. The colorful “McGurk” name was taken from the main character of a popular comic strip that appeared in the 1940s and 1950s. Mr. McGrath often drove a distinctive yellow car with the number 18, which he nicknamed the Bad Banana.” Although a fierce competitor on the track, Mr. McGrath also had a reputation as a very approachable, easygoing jokester who enjoyed chatting with fans after the night’s competition was over. His wife said Mr. McGrath often credited Johnny Gullo, who built and sponsored race cars and ran a track in North Collins. Mr. McGrath also enjoyed fishing, camping and spending time with his three grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Shannon McGrath Locking. A memorial gathering will take place at 11 a.m. May 18 in the North Collins Training Center on Spruce Street in North Collins - Dan Herbeck

Students in Sue Engle's second grade classroom at Grover L. Priess Primary were visited by mr. Kevin Mroz who taught the students all about how his family has tapped and used maple sap to make syrup. Mr. Mroz has trees that have been his family for generations and the children were excited to learn how syrup they use for their breakfast can be made with a little work and some basic knowledge! ATTENTION EDEN PROPERTY OWNERS & RESIDENTS

Each year, according to the Center for Disease Control, approximately 240 children under the age of five drown in swimming pools. For young people aged 1-14, unintentional drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury related death. Town of Eden Code §188-1 states, All swimming pools in the Town of Eden over 300 cubic feet capacity moved, erected, constructed or excavated, either above, below or partly above and below grade level, shall require a building permit. Swimming pools capable of containing water more than 24” deep at any point must be provided with a code-complying barrier (self-set or blow-up / inflatable swimming pools do not comply with the barrier requirements of NYS code), and every such swimming pool installed, constructed or substantially modified after December 14, 2006 shall be equipped with an approved pool alarm meeting ASTM standards.

RURAL TRANSIT SERVICE RECOGNIZES DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS

On Wednesday, April 24th, Rural Transit Service recognized over 130 volunteers at their annual luncheon held at Ilio DiPaolo’s in Blasdell. Rural Transit Service is a non-profit transportation service that operates in many towns throughout Erie County. They service the elderly, disabled and low/moderate income residents. Their service provides transportation for medical, grocery shopping, banking and personal business trips, with medical taking priority. Transportation has become a serious problem for many citizens throughout Erie County. As families move away and independence becomes a greater challenge for seniors, and with increasing transportation costs, the need for Rural Transit Service arises. Rural Transit Service gives independence, companionship, and security to their riders. “Since I cannot drive and live alone, I would have difficulty in shopping and keeping medical appointments. I would be lost without the van. Thank you so much,” voiced a client. Rural Transit Service is asking anyone who hears about their service to get the word out to all of those eligible - “We want everyone eligible to use our service.” Volunteers help Rural Transit by being dispatchers, drivers and driver aides. Rural Transit Service is totally volunteer driven! Many retired and non-retired residents volunteer. The hours of operation are from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Rural Transit Service is currently accepting applications for volunteers all across Erie County. Drivers, driver aides and dispatchers work four hour shifts: 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. or 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., one day a week. “I feel by volunteering, I’m giving back to the community” one volunteer was quoted saying. Any volunteer who can donate Rural Transit any amount of their time is greatly appreciated. If you are interested in registering, volunteering or for more information: please call 4726065.
