LAKE ERIE BEACH NEIGHBORHOOD CLEAN-UP A SUCCESS

Despite the rain and cool temperatures, approximately 50 volunteers braved the elements on Saturday, April 21, 2012 to participate in the first annual Lake Erie Beach Neighborhood Cleanup. Members of the Lake Erie Beach Neighborhood Revitalization Task Force, Town of Evans and Lake Erie Beach Fire Company, Joined elected officials, Town employees, teachers , students and volunters to clean-up recreational and commercial areas, as well as the major thoroughfares in Lake Erie Beach area. As part of the effort, approximately 44 tires, 25 electronics (televisions and computers) and 140 bags of trash were collected. Several hypodermic needles were discovered and properly disposed of by the Evans Police Department. Among the unique items found was a 1890-1941 tombstone, which was recovered alone the Route 5 area. The majority of the trash collected was from fast-food restaurants and coffee houses. “The volunteers who came out were amazing” said Lori Szewczyk Director of Community Development for the Town of Evans. “We were able to clean-up about 90% of our targeted area before the weather forced us to quit for the day,” she said. “We hope to make this an annual event,” said Lake Erie Beach Fire Chief Guy Canonico, Jr. “If the weather cooperates, next year will be even bigger and better.” ________

If You’ve Ever Considered Seeing A Chiropractor, You Must Read This Now

If you suffer from a health problem and have considered seeing a chiropractor, this could be the most eye-opening article you’ll ever read. Imagine for a moment that it’s 6 months from today ... You’re enjoying what you love to do ... playing golf, playing with the kids, or maybe just laying on a beach somewhere. You’re free of the pain and health issues that were holding you back. You have more energy, better health, and absolutely no pain.

“Isn’t Chiropractic Just for Back Pain?”

We can help conditions like ... • • • • • • • •

Headaches and Migraines Asthma and Allergies Numbness in the Arms and Legs Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Athletic Injuries Car Accidents Shoulder, Hip and Knee Pain And much more ....

Does this sound too good to be true -- to live pain free, like you were in your younger years?

“Does Chiropractic Really Work?” Chiropractic has been around for over a hundred years and has been used to help everyone from tiny babies to the elderly. Even top sports stars and entertainers ... like Tiger Woods, Emmitt Smith, Tony Robbins, Joe Montana, Lance Armstrong, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mel Gibson. In fact, the U.S. government is so convinced chiropractic works they’ve been paying for it through the Medicare system for 30 years. In addition to that, here’s what some of the top medical researchers had to say about chiropractic ... “Manipulation [chiropractic adjustments], with or without exercise, improved symptoms more than medical care did after both 3 and 12 months.” - British Medical Journal

• A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can map out your plan to better health. I’ll answer all your most probing questions about chiropractic and what it can do for you. The appointment will not take long at all and you won’t be sitting in a waiting room all day either. To take me up on this special offer, you must come in before May 28, 2012.

In a minute, I’ll tell you how you can make this a reality. But first, you should know a little about me. My name is Dr. Derek Bell. My family chose to start our practice in Derby 18 years ago because we loved the town. Since then, I’ve used gentle chiropractic treatments to help thousands in our community feel better and live healthier, more productive lives.

• A set of specialized x-rays to look for misalignments, bad posture, and joint degeneration .. (NOTE: These would normally cost you at least $100).

Phone 947-4950. When you call between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, tell the receptionist you’d like to come in for the Special Chiropractic Evaluation before May 28, 2012.

“Don’t Let Pain Keep You and Your Family From Experiencing a Full Life.” There’s an endless list of health problems chiropractic can help with. For example, here’s what a recent study on chiropractic and high blood pressure found ... “This procedure has the effect of not one, but two blood-pressure medications given in combination ... And it seems to be adverse-event free. We saw no side effects and no problems,” said study leader George Bakris, MD, director of the University of Chicago hypertension center. “How Much Does Chiropractic Cost?” It’s impossible to know for sure what you’ll need to get rid of your nagging health problem until I’ve examined you. That’s why for 15 days only, $27 will get you all the services I normally charge new patients $155 for!

“Chiropractor’s manipulation of the spine was more helpful than any of the following: traction, massage, biofeedback, acupuncture, injection of steroids into the spine and back corsets, and ultrasound.” -- Stanley Bigos, MD, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery.

What does this offer include? Everything I normally do in my new patient evaluation. Take a look at what you will receive:

Although chiropractic works great for back pain, at our office we’ve helped patients with a wide range of problems.

• A complete computerized infared spinal evaluation to help in beginning to find the “cause” of your problem.

• An in-depth consultation about your health where I will listen ... really listen.

Call today and we can get started with your consultation, exam and x-rays as soon as there’s an opening in the schedule. Our office is called Affordable Chiropractic Life Centers, and you can find us at 7008 Erie Rd., in Derby (in the Chapel Villa complex). Sincerely, Dr. Derek Bell P.S. You’ve got enough people trying to waste your time with risky treatments that you don’t really want or might not need. I’m not one of those people. What I’m offering here is something quite different. I encourage you to call today and start living a healthier, more joyful life. P.P.S. Why Suffer With Years of Misery? The big myth about health problems is “maybe it will just go away on its own.” A 1998 study in the British Medical Journal proved this myth false, showing that most back pain sufferers who do nothing will have pain 12 months later. That’s no way to live, not when there could be an easy solution to your problem.

Yes, the Lake Shore track athletes teamed up with Evans’ Town Parks’ Director, Mr. Russ Manguso, to prepare the Evans’ Senior Center and the Southcreek Pool for the upcoming summer. Over 50 students participated in this great collaboration, and it truly was a win-win scenario. Not only did the athletes do a good service for our town, but it also enables our student

athletes to learn the value of hard work and community service. These athletes are used to working together as a team on the track, but they were able to use this teamwork to help our great community-a great lesson for everyone. Coaches Kowalski, Connors, Ippolito, and Kunkel would like to thank the Town of Evans and Mr. Manguso for allowing us to participate and give back to the Town of Evans! We will be back next year to continue making Evans the beautiful town that it is!

VIET NAM: TOPIC AT HISTORICAL SOCIETY

CRADLE BEACH CELEBRATES 125 YEARS

To pay tribute to the men and women who have served in the military, the Evans Historical Society will present a program on the Viet Nam war. Each year the society recognizes the veterans and many individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our nation’s freedoms. This year’s program will be presented by Joe Tomlinson who served in the long war. Mr. Tomlinson will discuss his service in Viet Nam and will provide a “home made” video depicting various aspects of the war. The program will be held at the Evans Historical Society Museum (old school house) in Evans Center on Manday, May 21 at 7 p.m. Joseph Pisarski, President of the society, mentioned the program will be a very emotional presentation and the public is invited. ________

Now is not the right time ... I have officially withdrawn my name from the ballot for the Lake Shore Board of Education trustee position. I believe I need to commit more of my time preparing myself for this position. I must first attend meetings and contribute in any way I possibly can. I will do so. If I am going to serve our community effectively, I must prepare myself further. I advocate volunteer involvement and attendance of board meetings. This is where I must begin. I will run again when I feel I have earned your vote. I cannot in good conscience ask for your vote solely on the basis of friendship or familiarity. I haven’t earned it. But I will. This board is doing a wonderful job. We should be proud of each and every single member of our board. I urge you to vote for our incumbents: Richard Vogan and Jennifer Wackowski. They are prepared, experienced, and an important parts of a board that has done so much for us. Our budget is sound. Our academic standing is good and showing tremendous growth towards being great. Our campus .... we have a school system we can be proud of. Elect our incumbents. Give our most experienced people the chance to further the goals we all want to achieve. Please check my website on Facebook for a more detailed explanation. My heartfelt thanks go out to all my supporters. I am sorry if I let you down. But without further preparation, I run the risk of letting our children down. For me, that is unacceptable. Vote! Vote for our incumbents. They won’t let us down. Thanks to so many people ... may the good Lord bless you all! Sincerely: David R. Lopez

I am a proud and lifelong resident of the Town of Evans, a veteran, a fireman and a proud member and representative of IUOE local 17 for the past 17 years. When I graduated from Lake Shore it was among the top educational districts in the state. I have a 9 and 7 year old and I would like them to have the same great start in life that I had because of Lake Shore. As of June 2011 our Cohort Graduation Rate, as reported in our NY State Report Card (on page 15) is 78%. Out of 28 public schools in Erie County only Buffalo and Lackawanna have a lower rate. I believe that it is no coincidence that the three districts with the lowest graduation rates also have the most depressed socio-economic areas in the county. Studies have shown that after school programs, one on one tutoring, available transportation and parent accountability programs have greatly improved the students ability to stay in school and graduate with their peers. According to the NY State Report Cards we have 10.3% more management than any other public school in Erie County. If we address the overabundance of management issue we would then have the funds to pay for our educational needs. After school educational programs, one on one tutoring, parent accountability programs and transportation to support these initiatives. This would mean more teaching positions and more hours for the bus drivers. I am not a politician, I am an extremely active and concerned parent and if I didn’t believe with my whole heart that I would be a helping hand rather than a hinderance towards my children’s successful future, I would not be asking for your vote. Last year less than 6% percent of the school district voted in the general election. Being on the school board is not a paid position and it is only a three year term. So please, just give me a chance.

Thank you for your time, Kenny

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY AND AWARENESS MONTH

May is Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month; a national initiative aimed at getting motorists and motorcyclists to safely “share the road.” The warm weather is approaching, flowers are blooming, daylight hours are longer-spring is finally here and motorcycle riders as well as bicycle riders are dusting off their bikes and getting ready for warm weather and the open road. It’s not only riders that need to be prepared, drivers everywhere need to be more cautious and alert while driving. Motorcycling is a popular choice for economical and convenient travel. They are inexpensive to operate, fun to ride and easy to park. In Erie County alone, there are more than 22,000 motorcycle riders. Not to mention the thousands of others who use their cycles for touring and recreational activities. Unfortunately, many of these riders never learn the critical skills needed to ride safely. I want to remind all motorists, especially new teen drivers, to be on the lookout for motorcycles and make sure they share the road with them safely. The Governor’s Highway Safety Association released a national report on motorcycle accident statistics for 2010 showing that while nationally motorcycle deaths declined 2% , in New York there was a large increase in the number of fatalities-180, up sharply from 136 from the same period in 2009. We are an era of distracted driving and I want to ask drivers to look twice before inadvertently violating the right-of-way of pedestrians, other cars and motorcycles. Motorcycles are out there and we need to increase our awareness and stay alert. Before hitting the road this driving season, I encourage all riders to visit any of the Erie County Auto Bureaus to get properly licensed and to register their “bikes”. All riders should also take a moment to review the aspects of

motorcycle safety-wear protective gear at all times, including a helmet, ride within our skill limits, ride unimpaired and become a life-long learner by brushing up each year and taking refresher rider courses. Together, the more we raise awareness, the more we keep motorcyclists and all motorists safe! Additional safety information can also be found at the New York State Motorcycle Safety Program website www. nysmsp.org. For more information on motorcycle licensing and registration please contact the Erie County Auto Bureau Call Center at 716-858-7450 or visit us at www.erie.gov/ clerk and click on the Auto Bureau tab.

“NICKELS FOR NAILS” Southtowns Catholic School recently participated in a fundraiser called “Nickels for Nails.” “Nickels for Nails” is a campaign set forth by Habitat for Humanity to raise money to rehab a house in Buffalo called Youth Build. This house is located at 39 Garner Avenue in the city of Buffalo and upon completion will be given to a family in need. The National Junior Honor Society of Southtowns Catholic School was responsible for the collec-

tion and counting of all monies donated. The classes with the most money collected wre rewarded with an ice cream party served by the National Junior Honor Society. The School raised $708.00 in spare change over a four week period. Mrs. Fabi’s First Grade class donated the most money; raising more than $165.00. SCS 8TH GRADERS VISIT CAMP PIONEER The eighth grade students recently spent the day at Camp Pioneer in Angola for a Religious retreat geared at team building. The students spent the day exploring the beauty and nature of the Camp, while doing such activities as obstacle courses, role playing and rope activities. The activities taught the

children about trust and devotion. The kids day ended with the students praying and showing devotion around the campfire. Although a gloomy day, the kids brought sunshine into each others lives! Pictured: Southtowns Catholic School- 8th Grade Class at Camp Pioneer.

CUB SCOUTS CONDUCT BEACH CLEAN-UP

The Cub Scouts of Pack 578, from the First Church of Evans, conducted a clean-up of Bennett Beach on Saturday, May 5th. The Cub Scouts and their families spent a total of over 50 combined hours cleaning the beach and park. They gathered trash, tires, and driftwood to be picked up by the Erie County Parks and Recreation staff. The Cub Scouts have a strong commitment to

helping the environment and their community, so that our natural resources, such as Bennett Beach, can be enjoyed by our county residents. This is one of the many values that the Cub Scouts learn through scouting. If you are interested in your son learning the values of scouting, please call Cubmaster Tom O’Neill at 947-0086. The Cub Scouts meet on Monday evenings during the school year.

ATTENTION: Lake Shore Central School District Taxpayers IMPORTANT INFORMATION

On May 15, 2012, you will be asked to vote on three (3) separate issues pertaining to (1st) 2012-13 District School Budget raising taxes 1.8%. (2nd) the purchase of 8 buses and 2 school service trucks by borrowing $823,889 raising taxes yet an additional .8% (approx.) (3rd) election of 2 members to the District School Board. For the past 3 months, Evans Taxpayers United (ETU) has been involved in obtaining information concerning these issues. BUDGET Is the budget Smoke and Mirrors? The Superintendent says that he has saved $2 million from last year’s budget, but he wants a 1.8% increase in next year’s budget! Can’t we shave another 1.8% so that for the first time in memory, there will be NO TAX INCREASE? What else is buried in there? THE PURCHASE OF 8 BUSES AND 2 SERVICE TRUCKS ETU has gathered and evaluated any and all information made available by Superintendent Przepasniak and his staff regarding this referendum. This is the third time a referendum has been brought before the voters in the past year, with the two previous referendums being defeated. • ETU has received the District’s “Work Order Summary with Parts and Service” printouts for all 10 vehicles. These maintenance records, by virtue of mileage and part cost, do not support the need to replace all eight buses and the two service vehicles. For whatever reason, not received by ETU, was the work done on these vehicles by outside sources. Verbally explained to ETU was the severity of the floorboard, corrosion on all, even though these buses were passed by State Dept. of Transportation inspectors. • Finally, on Page 22 and 23 of the 2012-13 proposed budget, is a listing of 4 bus purchase referendums dating back to 2207, whereby we will be paying $448,762 next year for past purchased buses which are still not paid off! •

THE BOARD OF EDUCATION ELECTIONS The Board of Education is the Superintendent of Schools boss. They are to work together to fiscally and scholastically guide our District with the educational proficiency of our children the priority. Are you satisfied with your child’s scholastic progress?

Your vote counts. Get involved. Learn the facts behind the numbers. We the voters must bring our leaders to understand that in a Town with a per capita income of $19,000, our District’s spending must be reduced and our taxes lowered. Vote on May 15th, 2012.

The Bottom Line

549-1565

Every year New York State allocates billions of dollars to the school districts for their transportation needs. The school districts then put together a vehicle purchase proposal and put it to a vote for the taxpayers to approve or not.

Lake Shore 2012 Transportation Referendum

This year’s referendum is for $823,889.41. 90% ($741,500.00) of this money will be paid for by the state. You, the taxpayer, have already paid this money through New York state Sales & Income Taxes. There will be a small property tax increase of less than 3 cents per $1,000.00 of assessment. Chances are maintaining old buses will be more expensive for the taxpayer than buying new buses (Ten Year Warranty) because of the 90% State aid. The money will be spent by the State. What you, the voter, needs to decide is whether Lake Shore will get new buses or another district gets new buses compliments of you, the taxpayer. The bottom line is, do you want to keep the money that you already have paid (90%) through taxation, or do you want another school district to have the money for their new buses??
