On Wed. 4/24/13, the Eden Conservation Advisory Board sponsored a presentation on foxes and coyotes at the Eden United Methodist Church. Elise Abel, or known to some people, as "The Foxlady", captivated an audience of both young and old. More than 125 people attended her presentation. She hopes to educate people on foxes and coyotes. She presented facts and observations she has acquired from over 20 years of rescuing injured wildlife. The response to the presentation was very positive. Sue Johnson and the girl scouts helped with refreshments and Ed Krycia and the boy scouts helped set up. Go to http:// www.foxwoodrehab.typepad.com for more information.

HIGGINS & JACOBS PRESENT VETERAN ROBERT FRANZ WITH A PURPLE HEART

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) and Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs presented Western New York veteran Robert Franz with a Purple Heart for injuries suffered during the Vietnam War. The medal, presented to Mr. Franz nearly 47 years to the date of his injury, is the Army veteran’s second Purple Heart. “With selfless American spirit, Robert Franz was hit not once, but twice during his service and each time returned to fight on in defense of this nation,” said Higgins, a member of the House Committees on Foreign Affairs and Homeland Security. “Many Vietnam veterans returned to an unappreciative public. Today, on behalf of a good and grateful nation, we present this Purple Heart and sincerely say thank you for service and sacrifice.” "The Clerk's Office is honored to play a role in helping Mr. Franz obtain this Purple Heart and more so the well deserved but long delayed recognition for his heroism and bravery on behalf of our country," added Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs. Private First Class Franz left to fight for his country in Vietnam on December 25, 1965. On March 24, 1966, Franz’s unit was called to help another unit under heavy fire. Two hours into the battle, he was shot in the chest bone by the enemy. With life threatening injuries he was flown by chopper to a nearby hospital where the bullet was removed without morphine due to a shortage. Despite the nearly fatal wound, Mr. Franz returned to the warzone just two weeks later. On April 24, 1966 PFC Franz was involved in a search and destroy mission on the Cambodian border. Franz was sent to investigate a bridge that had been destroyed and was ambushed on his return. A mortar round exploded a few feet from where he was and shrapnel hit his right arm. He was airlifted by chopper and flown to Saigon for an emergency operation. Weeks later he was back on the battlefield. PFC Franz was honorably discharged and returned to the United States on December 25, 1966. Interestingly, he began his service right-handed, but was forced to become left-handed while on-duty and remains that way to this date due to his battle injuries. Mr. Franz received a Purple Heart for his first injury but was never recognized for his second wound. County Clerk Jacobs first learned of the issue when he met Mr. Franz during an outreach event for the Veteran Discount Card Program offered through the Clerk’s office. Mr. Jacobs then reached out to Congressman Higgins for assistance in requesting the medal through the U.S. Department of the Army. Mr. Franz is Sergeant of Arms for the Honor Guard for Newell-Faulkner American Legion Post 880 in Eden, New York. Members of the Post participated in the medal presentation ceremony which took place in County Hall. The Purple Heart is awarded to soldiers who have been injured or killed due to hostile actions while serving with the U.S. Armed Services. The original Purple Heart, designated as the Badge of Military Merit, was established by General George Washington in 1782. Mr. Franz received a Purple Heart with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, which indicates that this is his second Purple Heart. SCS HELPS RAISE MONEY FOR GOIN BALD FOR BUCKS

Southtowns Catholic School rallied together for a terrific cause. The students raised $224 for Goin Bald for Bucks. They did it to support Joy Catalano Molik, mother of 7th grade student, Julia Molik as she went Bald for Bucks on April 25th. She did it to honor her close friend Angela Meade Roberts who has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Angela is 40 years old and a single mother with 2 teenage boys. __________

SCS SUPER VOLUNTEER

Southtowns Catholic School would like to honor our “super volunteer” Franz Joseph Stadler. In the rain, snow, sleet & hail, Mr. Stadler welcomes the children into the building each day with a friendly smile and “Good morning” as they get off the bus. Mr. Stadler retired from SCS after 15 years to take care of his wife, Jane. His favorite part of SCS was interacting with the kids. After the Sandy Hook tragedy, he felt the need to come back and add that extra sense of security we all appreciate. Mr. Stadler makes sure each and every student is safely in the school and ready to start another great day at Southtowns Catholic. He is the proud grandfather of SCS students Mathew & Michael Stadler. __________

RURAL TRANSIT SERVICE RECOGNIZES VOLUNTEERS

On Wednesday, April 24th, Rural Transit Service recognized over 130 volunteers at their annual luncheon held at Ilio DiPaolo’s in Blasdell. Rural Transit Service is a non-profit transportation service that operates in many towns throughout Erie County. They service the elderly, disabled and low/moderate income residents. Their service provides transportation for medical, grocery shopping, banking and personal business trips, with medical taking priority. Transportation has become a serious problem for many citizens throughout Erie County. As families move away and independence becomes a greater challenge for seniors, and with increasing transportation costs, the need for Rural Transit Service arises. Rural Transit Service gives independence, companionship, and security to their riders. “Since I cannot drive and live alone, I would have difficulty in shopping and keeping medical appointments. I would be lost without the van. Thank you so much,” voiced a client. Rural Transit Service is asking anyone who hears about their service to get the word out to all of those eligible - “We want everyone eligible to use our service.” Volunteers help Rural Transit by being dispatchers, drivers and driver aides. Rural Transit Service is totally volunteer driven! Many retired and non-retired residents volunteer. The hours of operation are from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Rural Transit Service is currently accepting applications for volunteers all across Erie County. Drivers, driver aides and dispatchers work four hour shifts: 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. or 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., one day a week. “I feel by volunteering, I’m giving back to the community” one volunteer was quoted saying. Any volunteer who can donate Rural Transit any amount of their time is greatly appreciated. If you are interested in registering, volunteering or for more information: please call 4726065.

SCS HAS SPECIAL VISITOR FOR INVEST IN ED

Southtowns Catholic School was lucky enough to have Mr. Brad Rybczynski come in and explain what the "Invest in Ed" Rally was going to be about. He is the father to SCS Students Walt, Madeline, Luke and Grant. Mr. Rybczynski told us how the NY Education Investment Tax Credit bill (A.1826 / S.4099) is currently making its way through the state legislature and how important it was for us to attend. He made it clear how a Bill becomes a Law, what the different forms of legislation are for, what a lobbyist does, and how important it is to vote. Mr. Rybczynski began his career in government as a member of the Majority Central Staff for the Erie County Legislature in 1999. During his tenure he served as a clerk for many of the Legislature's standing committees including Community Enrichment, Government Affairs, Energy and Environment and the prestigious post as clerk of the Finance & Management Committee. Additionally, Mr. Rybczynski was responsible for budget analysis relating to Erie Community College, Buffalo and Erie County Public Library and the Annual County budget. After nearly 5 years with the Erie County Legislature Rybczynski was tapped to become the first ever Executive Director of the Buffalo Building and Construction Trades Council, an affiliate of the AFL-CIO. After years of experience and successes Rybczynski struck out to form his own consulting firm to assist area labor unions, healthcare entities, local governments and nonprofit organizations gain success in the area of government affairs and public policy. During this time he was successful in attracting a number of clients from a broad spectrum of labor organizations, health related industries and nonprofits. His work transformed the processes and steps organizations would take to gain the passage of local and state legislation and win grant awards from various levels of government. Currently, Mr. Rybczynski serves as a Labor Benefits Representative with BlueCross/BlueShield of WNY. The Education Investment Tax Credit bill would increase the amount of charitable donations to public schools and nonprofit scholarship organizations by granting individuals and businesses a tax credit for their donations. Students from grades 5, 6, 7 & 8 participated in the Invest in Ed Rally at The First Niagara Center on April 10th. We were a part of more than 10,000 parents, students, and teachers that rallied in support of the proposed Education Investment Tax Credit bill. The rally was led by a bipartisan collection of Buffalo's state legislature delegation, as well as by Buffalo Bishop Richard Malone, Mayor Byron Brown, Robin Schimminger, George D. Maziarz, Crystal Davis Peoples-Stokes, Samuel Radford, and numerous others. The proposed tax credit would encourage individuals and businesses to donate to public schools and non-profit scholarship organizations. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience democracy and the legislative process in action. Pictured: Brad Rybczynski with Walt Rybczynski & Madeline Rybczynski __________

SCS ATTENDS INVEST IN ED RALLY

Southtowns Catholic School participated in the Invest in Ed Rally at The First Niagara Center on April 10th. We were a part of more than 10,000 parents, students, and teachers that rallied in support of the proposed Education Investment Tax Credit bill. The rally was led by a bipartisan collection of Buffalo’s state legislature delegation, as well as by Buffalo Bishop Richard Malone, Mayor Byron Brown, Robin Schimminger, George D. The proposed tax credit would encourage individuals and businesses to donate to public schools and non-profit scholarship organizations. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience democracy and the legislative process in action. As citizens of both the United States and New York State, our students, teachers, clergy and families will join Bishop Richard J. Malone and others from across the state to learn more about the Investment in Education Tax Credit legislation (A. 1826) and to exercise their right to advocate for this legislation. Among its many benefits to education, this bill will allow individuals and corporations a tax credit for donations made to non-profit organizations, like the BISON Fund, to provide needs-based educational scholarships.
