NORTH COLLINS EMERGENCY SQUAD PARTNERS UP WITH LAKE SHORE CENTRAL

Several students from the High School Life Skills program were looking for a place to gain “on the job” work experience. When one of the students showed an interest in the ambulance and emergency services, their teacher came up with an idea. Why not go to a place to practice & learn quality work skills while in an environment that was interesting to the student? That’s when classroom teacher JR Osuch approached Janice Catalano, Director of Operations of the Emergency Squad (and who also works for the school as an Occupational Therapist). She states that “it was win-win situation”. The students, under supervision of their job coach, would learn & develop work skills; and the Emergency Squad (100% volunteer) would receive help with maintaining their building. So the process began to set this up. The students not only completed various cleaning tasks, but also learned the importance of being on time, signing in, accountability, and other requirements one needs to maintain a job. Onthe- job training is more meaningful than just simulating the tasks in a classroom. The student’s hope that someday their training will pay off and they will be able to find a job. Lynn Maciejewski, Vice President of the Emergency Squad provided Agency oversight for this program. She felt that the program was not only a success, but it was fun having the students around! On their final day on the job, the students were treated to lunch and a personal tour of the ambulances & equipment. Membership was also fully onboard with this program and would like to see it continue in the future. Photo: Lynn Maciejewski (L) from NCES with LakeShore cleaning crew. __________

SCS MAY CROWNING

SCS GETS NEW PLAYGROUND

Southtowns Catholic School is lucky enough to have 2 playgrounds. The new & improved preschool playground was the Eagle Scout project of Matthew Scherer. The new playground includes; a tunnel, chalkboard, tic tac toe table, 2 areas for slides, picnic tables, 2 see saws, a king of the mountain hill and a special place for circle time stories.Matthew attended Southtowns Catholic school for 4 years and his family belongs to Blessed John Paul II Parish so he felt this would be a great way to give back to my community. Matthew became a Life Scout and had started thinking about a project in order to become an Eagle Scout. At that time his sisters religious ed class was cleaning the preschool equipment that had been vandalized with spray paint. Shortly after that a fence went up to prevent further vandalism. When he discovered that area was the preschool playground he thought it would be a great project to add to what they already had and make it better. From planning to finishing the project, it took Matthew about 20 hours. The ideas for the playground came from a suggestion from his aunt about a “natural” playground. To raise money for the project, he wrote letters asking for the donations and visited local businesses to talk to the owners and managers. Matthew belongs to Troop 400 out of St. Peter and Paul parish in Hamburg. He is a freshman at Frontier High School. The requirements for becoming an Eagle Scout are: Earn a total of 21 required merit badges, serve actively in a position of responsibility ( he is the Order of the Arrow troop representative) and lastly plan, develop and show leadership to others in a service project. THE CITY OF GOOD NEIGHBORS HELPS FUNDRAISE FOR LOCAL CHARITY

On Friday May 3, Jay’s Power Spark and World Hollywood Entertainment at the McKinley Mall held a special autograph signing to support Mikey’s Way. Tyler Chase from AMC’s The Walking Dead generously donated his time and autographed merchandise for fans with all proceeds benefiting the foundation. With the help of Jay’s Power Spark, three days of fundraising at the McKinely Mall and Rapids Theatre Carnival of Parahorror was able to raise $380 for the foundation. On Sunday May 19, Affival, a company that specializes in the treatment of liquid steel, partnered with Mikey’s Way to hold a Mikey Bowl at Transit Lanes in Buffalo. The event raised $5,000 to helped children with life-threatening illnesses strike back! Lastly, a 12-year-old boy from Western New York held a comedy night fundraiser for the foundation that totaled $619. We are pleased to announce these fundraising efforts that have graciously benefited the lives of pediatric patients with life threatening illnesses. Mikey’s Way Foundation is a nonprofit charity founded by Michael “Mikey” Friedman in 2005. The foundation’s mission is to enrich the lives of children with cancer and other life threatening illnesses. It is the goal of the foundation to be able to connect each and every child with their family and friends during the long hours, days and weeks of separation they must endure. The foundation strives to help children face the emotional and physical hardships of long-term debilitating treatment. In creating a connection, we are in turn presenting the child with a form of diversion. “These gifts provided endless hours of mental stimulation and respite in the unfortunate and frightening world of treatment” said Les Freidman, CEO & President of Mikey’s Way Foundation. With the use of today’s technology, keeping children connected is paramount to their recovery. Mikey’s Way has helped over 3,000 children get connected since 2005, locally serving patients at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and Buffalo Women and Children’s Hospital. NEW BENCH MARKS PERMANENT MEMORY FOR COWORKERS OF PHARMACIST AT IRVING HOSPITAL

For coworkers of the late staff pharmacist at Lake Shore Health Care Center in Irving, NY, a new addition to the front lobby is a warm remembrance of her sunny smile and happy personality. For visitors and patients, the new bench is a stopping place for resting, reflection and waiting for rides away from the wind and rain. The new bench, located just inside the main doors of the hospital, was purchased through a generous donation made in memory of Kathleen Fearman, RPh, Staff Pharmacist at Lake Shore Health Care Center, who passed away unexpectedly in July 2011. The funds were contributed by her niece, an employee of the hospital’s Surgical Department, Caroline Fearman, RN, CNOR, RNFA. “Now we’ll just walk in the hospital and think of her,” Ms. Fearman said. The bench features a plaque that commemorates Ms. Fearman’s “Aunt Kathy” and a butterfly etching, a significant symbol for the late pharmacy staffer. Hospital officials chose the prominent location for the new furnishing as a testament to the late employee’s outgoing personality. “I think it’s a wonderful tribute to Kathy,” explained Chuck Spicola, a fellow staff pharmacist who worked with Kathleen. “She was a very dedicated employee who always put a smile on everyone’s face with her quick wit,” he said. “She’s sadly missed.” Kathleen had been a member of the hospital staff since 1995. __________

By Mrs. Schnaufer and Mrs. Orcutt Sixth grade students were recently given the opportunity to explore a wide variety of careers available to them in their community as well as around the world. They were able to explore their interests, values, abilities and skills. While in their computer lab class, students completed an interest inventory and were able to assess their likes and dislikes of a variety of activities and interests. Students chose from a variety of careers online and explored them at mappingyourfuture.org/planyourcareer/ careership/. Students were also given the opportunity to do a virtual job shadow online. They were able to view a person in their chosen career choice perform daily duties at www. careeronestop.org/ExploreCareers/ExploreCareers.aspx. On May 10th, the sixth graders were treated to a half day “Career Day Fair” where Eden parents, community members and friends and spouses of Eden Elementary teachers to spoke to the students about their own career paths. Each student attended three 25-minute sessions with presenters they chose during computer lab, and students and faculty alike, enjoyed each presentation. Presenters included Jeff Meredith, Hockey Coach - SUNY Fredonia; Steve Malkowski, Buffalo Police Officer; Ann Sawyer, Court Reporter; Tracey Fest, Pediatric Dental Hygienist; Tim Schnaufer, Architect and Professor - ECC; Chuck Laedke, Mason; Michael Breeden, Chief Information Officer – Erie County; Don Johnson, Plumber; Joe Steger, Professional Tennis Coach; Kevin Karstedt, Informational Writer; Jody Bialaszewski, Occupational Therapist. Also, to Anita’s church family for the beautiful luncheon filled with so much love. Words cannot express what your friendship meant to her. We were so blessed to have Anita in our lives for so many years. She was a source of great joy, love and compassion in our lives and we will miss her tremendously.
