SAFETY AND SMART DECISIONS AROUND HOT WEATHER AND WATER

Erie County Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein today called attention to the need for increased vigilance and awareness when swimming or enjoying other waterrelated recreational activities following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”) issuance of a report stating that drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death worldwide, and the highest rates are among children. While drowning deaths have declined in the United States in the last decade, drowning remains the leading cause of injury death among children 1-4 years. The highest unintentional drowning rates occurred among children younger than 4 years old and the death rate for males was nearly four times that for females. Nonfatal and fatal drowning incidents occurred most commonly on weekends and during June-August. Among children younger than 4 years, many fatal and nonfatal drowning incidents occurred in swimming pools and bathtubs. “With hot weather once again here, Many people will be heading to the water to cool off,” said Dr. Burstein. “Whether swmming, boating, or enjoying the water some other way, everyone needs to think safety and common sense first. Children should always be supervised around water. Lifejackets should be used by boaters and jet-skiers, and swimming should not take place in dangerous or restricted areas.” To prevent drowning, CDC recommends that all parents and children should learn survival swimmng skills. Research shows that early formal swimming lessons reduce risk of drowning among children aged 1-4 years. Additionally, envirionmental protections (suchas isolation pool fences and Lifeguards) should be in place; alcohol should be avoided while swimming, boating, water skiing, or suupervisors should have training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Information regarding drowning risk factors and prevention strategies is available at http://www.cdc.gov/homeandrecreationalsafety/water-safety/index.html,http:// www.cdc.gov/safechild. To access the CDC report, visit http://www.cdc.gov//mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ mm6119a4.htm?s cid=mm6119a4 e. EDEN VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT Celebrating 8 Years of Service to Our Community

ANNUAL FUND DRIVE June 5, 6, & 7, 2012 The Eden Vol. Fire Dept. will be calling door to door

on June 5, 6, & 7 between 6:30-9:00 p.m. Please have your donation ready. If you will not be at home please feel free to mail your donation. The protection of your family, friends, home and property against fire and other emergencies is provided by trained people. We differ in but one critical respect from members of City Fire Departments - We are all VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS. No one is salaried. In fact, each member is required to pay initiation fees and annual dues to help support this vital service. Participation in required training is all accomplished during the volunteer’s time away from work and family. Each year our firefighters raise funds through our annual fund drive and at the annual Corn Festival. This money helps to enhance services and equipment utilized to provide even better protection to our community. We will remain a no Fee service.

TO REPORT AN EMERGENCY KEEP CALM - DIAL 9-1-1 Give the dispatcher:

• Your Name • Your Address • Your Telephone Number • The type of problem or fire • Do not hang up the phone

Burstein. “Whether swimming, boating, or enjoying the water some other way, everyone needs to think safety and common sense first. Children should always be supervised around water. Lifejackets should be used by boaters and jet-skiers, and swimming should not take place in dangerous or restricted areas.” To prevent drowning, CDC recommends that all parents and children should learn survival swimming skills. Research shows that early formal swimming lessons reduce risk of drowning among children aged 1-4 years. Additionally, environmental protections (such as isolation pool fences and Lifeguards) should be in place; alcohol should be avoided while swimming, boating, water skiing, or supervisors should have training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Information regarding drowning risk factors and prevention strategies is available at http://www.cdc.gov/homeandrecreationalsafety/water-safety/index.html,http:// www.cdc.gov/safechild. To access the CDC report, visit http://www.cdc.gov//mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ mm6119a4.htm?s cid=mm6119a4 e. Community Concern is known for their commitment to enhancing the health of the citizens of the Western New York community. This mission is continued by installing a new 104-panel rooftop solar energy system. Every kilowatt-hour of electricity produced by this 23.3kW display becomes a valuable source of electricity, which in turn reduces operating costs, pollution, and strengthens the long-term viability of the organization. The new solar energy system was installed by Solar Liberty of Buffalo. Solar Liberty has recently installed 3,200 panels on University of Buffalo’s North Campus, as well as other nonprofit organizations. “This practical energy alternative will save approximately $1500 in electrical savings annually and produce 23,000 kWh of solar electricity’ says executive director, Jerry Bartone. “The money saved will go towards increasing access to Community Concern’s services, and aiding our vision of leading the region in evidence-based best practice human services in western New York.” Aside from saving money, the system produces zero pollution, and offsets the building’s carbon footprint by 388 tons of CO2. This is equivalent to 2,000 gallons of gasoline and recycling 6.2 tons of waste. The installation of the solar panel system promotes societal well-being by protecting the environment fromcarbon emissions, and health problems asssociated with pollution. Community Concern is excited about the new addition to their building, and the benefits it will produce not only for their organization, but the surrounding community as well.

CRADLE BEACH ANNOUNCES IT’S ALL-STAFF REUNION

Cradle Beach is commemorating its 125th year of service to the children of WNY with an all-staff reunion. The event brings together counselors from the 1950’s to the present. Participants will come from all over the country and WNY to reminisce, reconnect and rediscover this special place on Lake Erie. The camp has been a bond among staff throughout the decades as generations have been part of the Cradle Beach family. The reunion is part of a project to build a Performing Arts Pavillion honoring Jack C. Anthony, former director at the camp. On-going fundraising activities are being held year-round to fund the project. The reunion will be held June 9-10, 2012 at Cradle Beach, 8038 Old Lakeshore Rd., Angola, NY 14006. For more information, contact Marilyn Sozanski, (716) 8127043 or e-mail her at marilyn.sozanski@gmail.com. Every year Cradle Beach serves the needs of thousands of children with disabilities and those who come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Through our summer enrichment camping program we are serving nearly 800 children annually. We also offer respite services to 128 individuals who are developmentally disabled and year-round academic, mentoring and tutoring assistance through Project SOAR for 60 children at Lovejoy Discover School PS#43 in Buffalo. Norm Young and I (Fred Allen) with our wives, Pat & Colleen saw this show in Florida during the past winter. Scott Brotherton and Damion Fontaine portray Frank Sinatra & Dean Martin. Others portray Louis Armstrong, the Blues Brothers, etc. great entertainment and dancing, too. We all agreed it was one of the best shows we had ever seen and the audience gave a standing ovation as they were invited back for next year. We talked to Damion and found out they worked out of Cleveland, Ohio, so we asked if they would come to the other end of Lake Erie and they accepted. “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not a giving it.” ~ William Arthur Ward It only takes a second to say “thank you”. It might take a few minutes to write a note saying the same thing, but it doesn’t take long. In either case, what a difference it can make. A “thank you” need not be reserved for the receipt of gifts. If you’ve appreciated someone’s kindness or special care, take the time to thank them. You’ll feel good about it and they’ll be inclined to offer additional help to you - or others. A simple “thank you” can bring friendships to a new level or start a new one. It can pave the way to other acts of kindness. The words need not be elaborate; they just need to be heartfelt. Don’t just wrap up your thanks, give them away.
