The Student Athletes of Eden Need Your Help We are reaching out to you on behalf of the Eden All Sports Booster Club Inc., a 501(c)-3 organization, working towards purchasing a new outdoor scoreboard and sound system, as well as an indoor scoreboard and sound system. The 30-yearold scoreboard stopped working during the 2012 football season and is not repairable. The indoor system is of a similar age and we fear is not far behind. We believe the terrific student athletes of Eden and their families deserve at the very least a functional scoreboard and sound system. Our organization is dedicated to the process of making this happen but we need your help. Sponsorship and recognition is available at various levels, please contact Jack Cuddihy, President, Eden All Sports Boosters Inc., at 560-5156 or mjcudd@hotmail.com. Tax Deductible donations may be sent to Eden All Sports Booster Club Inc., PO Box 56, Eden, New York 14057 Our school community is excited and eager to see this project succeed. Thank you for your consideration.

WILLIAM T HORNADAY AWARDS GIVEN TO LOCAL BOY SCOUTS

Wyatt Bromley and Alex Hutz of Boy Scout Troop 603 were presented the William T. Hornaday Award on June 17, 2013 for their conservation efforts at the Eden Corn Festival. The award was presented by Boy Scout Council President Michael Meyers, Council Scout Executive Russel Etzenhouser, and Council Conservation Committee Chair Terry Yonker. Scout executive Etzenhouser stated, “ Boy Scouts Bromley and Hutz are among an elite group of Scouts to earn this award in the Greater Niagara Frontier Council. They are only the forth and fifth Scouts to receive this award since 1952 in our Council.” Wyatt and Alex worked with the troop designing a program to collect recyclable bottles and cans on the suggestion of the Eden Conservation Committee. Wyatt designed the barrels that you see throughout the Corn Festival Grounds and Alex leads the collecting and sorting teams. Troop 603 logs and average of 250 hours of service time at the Corn Festival annually since 2009. The conservation efforts of the Boy Scouts have helped to keep recyclable material from being taken from our community to a land fill. The Hornaday Award is named for Dr. William T.Hornaday, former director of the New York Zoological Park and founder of the National Zoo. Dr. Hornaday was an outspoken champion of natural resource conservation and challenged Americans to work for wildlife conservation and habitat protection. In addition to the work Wyatt and Alex did on the Corn Festival they each had a series of Merit Badges that they completed to be eligible for the award and then had to give a formal presentation about the project to the Council Conservation Committee. Please support the continued efforts of Boy Scout Troop 603 and use the blue and yellow recycling containers at the Corn Festival this year. __________

SPOTLIGHT ON ETHEL MORGANO Celebrating 100 Years

Ethel Morgano, formerly of Brant, NY, recently celebrated her 100th birthday with her children, Kathryn and Douglas, her 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, along with her friends at McGuire Group’s Seneca Health Care Facility, where she has lived since 2008. Ethel was born on June 9, 1913, in South Dayton, NY and baptized in Buffalo. She is the daughter of Anthony and Carrie Valone and eldest of 5 children (Frank, Teresa, Joseph and Charlotte - all deceased). She attended North Collins High School and later graduated from the Buffalo School of Beauty as a hair stylist. She was employed in a few salons before deciding to work from her home in Brant where she lived with her husband Sam (who has since passed away) on a farm where they grew fruits and vegetables. Attending church was very important to Ethel. She attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Brant and was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. Ethel’s enjoyment came from taking care of her family and home. She loved cooking and baking and often had company for dinner. In her spare time, she also enjoyed her flower garden, playing bingo, reading and listening to music. She and her husband Sam loved to dance. After her children were grown, Ethel and Sam decided to sell their farm and move to Orchard Park where they were closer to their children. After retirement, the couple enjoyed traveling around the country and taking cruises. Your family and friends celebrate you, Ethel, on this very special occasion of your 100th Birthday!!!!!!! _________

HISTORIC SLIDE SHOW AND BUS TOUR OF ANGOLA

On Saturday, August 10th at 8:30 a.m., the Friends of the Village organization will present an 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Historic Slide Show and Bus Tour of the Village of Angola. The slide show will start at 8:30 a.m. in Updyke Hall at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 132 North Main Street, Angola. Tickets at $3.00 each, which are required to control the size of the group for the bus, are available at the Angola Village Hall, 41 Commercial Street, Angola. On Wednesday, July 31st at 7 p.m., a group new to the Gazebo in Angola’s Centennial Park. Stone Row will present the weekly concert. They provide Celtic and World music. The evening is sponsored by NewcombLong Post 928 of the American Legion. The five member group has presented concerts throughout Western New York and a thumbnail sketch about the group follows: “There is something for everyone at a Stone Row show. The material is influenced by elements of world music, folk, country and rock, with rich vocal harmonies and virtuosic instrumentals. Heartfelt performances are tastefully delivered with a fun-loving and outgoing stage presence that showcases the humor and uncompromising musical integrity of these contemporary minstrels.” Handicapped parking is available off Center and High Streets for early arrivals. Refreshments are sold at the park by the Brant-Evans Girl Scouts and the ice cream man has been making a weekly stop at the park. Next week, on Wednesday, August 7th, we’ll see another group new to the Gazebo - Queenstown Swing, featuring music of the Big Band Era, present the concert. The group comes from the former Eddie O Big Band that was popular throughout the area for many years. They feature three female vocalists. The evening is sponsored by Goya Foods Great Lakes and the American Musician’s Union. All who attend the concert will be provided with a free, shrink wrapped six-pack of a Goya product! The rain location for all of the concerts will continue to the nearby New Angola Theater on North Main Street. Bring a folding chair or a blanket and enjoy the evening. __________

FREE CLASS FOR THOSE WITH EARLY STAGE ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

For those who have received a diagnosis of early stage Alzheimer’s disease, fear and uncertainty may quickly lead to isolation. But there is hope for these people and their caregivers at the Alzheimer’s Association, WNY Chapter. The Chapter is offering a free “Living with Alzheimer’s Disease, Early Stage” class at its Williamsville office, in conjunction with a class for caregivers/partners of those with the diagnosis. The classes offer the chance for social activity, information about the disease, and a support system for those with Alzheimer’s. Concurrent classes will also take place for caregivers to help them understand the disease, its progression, and how to plan for the future. All classes run from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Chapter office at 2805 Wehrle Drive, Suite 6, in Williamsville. The three-part classes start August 2, 2013 with subsequent sessions on August 9 and 16. Assessment for those with Alzheimer’s disease is required prior to attendance, by calling 1.800.272.3900. __________
