Erie County Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein is advising residents and businesses in the Village of North Collins to bring tap water to a rolling boil, boil for one minute, and cool before using, or use bottled water certified for sale by the New York State Department of Health. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, and preparing food until further notice. On July 25, 2012, the Village of North Collins water system lost pressure due to a break in the main transmission main for the Village which brings water from wells into storage tanks. When water mains lose pressure, the chance that untreated water and harmful microbes can enter the water system is increased. “Harmful microbes in drinking water can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms and may pose a special health risk for infants, some elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems,” said Burstein. “But these symptoms are not just caused by microbes in drinking water. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you should seek medical advice.”

GREINER DONATES “GIFT OF LIFE”

Andrew Greiner, of Eden, believes that if you have a gift, you should share it with the world. At the age of nineteen, he has already shared the greatest gift of all with someone who he has never met - the gift of life. Less than a year ago in October 2011, Andrew joined the registry at a drive that took place during a homecoming football game on his campus, Allegheny College. He did not think much of his cheek swab at the time. Andrew said, I’ve donated blood previously and figured this would be similar, but have a much greater impact.” He was right. Andrew received a phone call just a few months later from Gift of Life. He said he was paralyzed with excitement at the possibility of becoming a donor; however, the purpose of the phone call at that point was only to confirm his contact information. Shortly thereafter, his nerves struck again when he received “the call”. Andrew was identified as a miracle match for a 38 year old male suffering from Leukemia. He agreed to proceed with the donation without any hesitation. Andrew traveled to New York City for his donation, which was the first time he had ever been there. Being able to experience the city in such a special way had an even greater impact on his life-changing event. He said, “Physically, emotionally and mentally, I felt incredible and will always hold this experience close to my heart.” While others praised Andrew for his heroism and generosity, Andrew felt differently. “Everyone was so proud of what I was doing and went on about how great of a person I was, but honestly, I did not feel like I deserved that much credit.” Andrew is a firm believer that if you have the opportunity to change someone’s life, then you should do it without question. Becoming a HERO is simple and painless. If you would like to learn more about how you can save a life, like Andrew did this past April, please contact us at info@giftoflife. org or 800-9MARROW. ________
