Hamburg Burgerfest set for July 20th
T
he Village of Hamburg will mark the 128th birthday of the hamburger at Burger Fest on Saturday, July 20 from noon to 11:30 p.m. Located along Main and Buffalo Streets (Rte. 62) and in the Municipal Parking Lot, the festival offers something for people of all ages and interests. Distinctive food offerings will be found at The Taste of Hamburg which showcases samples of the best offerings of about 25 local restaurants. The one-day festival includes live music (headliners on the Hamburg Casino Main Stage are Hit N Run, 7:30 to 11:30 p.m.) in three locations throughout the day, children’s activities and inflatable rides at First Niagara Bank Kids Space; an arts and crafts show and sale, the Key Bank Classic Car Show, the Lake Shore Savings Bank Bed Parade, the Labatt beer tent and the Uncle Joe’s Hamburger-eating contest. The festival celebrates Hamburg, N.Y. as the true birthplace of America’s favorite sandwich, the hamburger, at the Hamburg Fairgrounds in 1885. The annual festival is hosted on the third Saturday of July by the Rotary Club of Hamburg, the Hamburg Rotary Sunrise Club, the Town of Hamburg Lions Club and the Hamburg Kiwanis Club. Hamburg held its first Burger Fest in 1985 to mark the100th anniversary of the birth of the hamburger after organizers discovered a history book detailing the burger’s origins. Frank and Charles Menches, food vendors who traveled the world’s fair circuit, and who have been credited with also creating Cracker Jacks and ice cream cones, concocted the all-American burger. Legend has it that the Menches brothers ran out of their usual pork sausage that hot, fateful day at the fair and turned to local butchers to replenish their supplies. When no pork was available, a butcher suggested ground beef. The Menches brothers purchased the beef, but added secret ingredients, including coffee grounds to create a unique flavor. The hamburger was born! For a schedule of events, vendor registration forms and other information about Burger Fest, please visit our website at www.hamburgburgerfest.com.

How to safely light
and extinguish a campfire
A roaring campfire is often a staple of the camping
experience. A campfire to cook food or keep warm is an asset at any campground, and in the evening hours, a fire can provide a sense of security against inquisitive forest animals. A burning fire can also illuminate a campsite, which makes maneuvering around the site easier. Although there are many benefits to having a campfire, it’s important to note that fires, especially in very dry conditions, can be dangerous. It is essential to check a particular campsite or park’s posting about drought conditions to avoid an accident. In the wrong conditions, a cozy fire for toasting marshmallows can grow into an out-of-control wildfire in a matter of seconds. Starting a fire When you are ready to start a fire it is important to keep safety in mind. • Pick a safe spot to light the fire. Many campfires have fire rings for campers to use. If you are selecting a fire location on your own, choose an area away from brush or other easily ignitable material. Make a ring with large rocks to keep the fire from spreading. Keep the fire several feet away from your tent. • Gather materials during the day so you will not be scrambling for them after dark. You will need both tinder and kindling to light a fire and keep it roaring. Tinder is any small, highly flammable material that can light and burn quickly. Fibrous plant material, small twigs and newspaper make good tinder. Kindling is small pieces of wood that will burn long enough to catch larger logs of wood on fire. Finally, you will need a few logs of thicker wood that will sustain the fire. Have plenty of material on hand to be able to continue the fire, or you may find yourself foraging in the darkness when the fire goes out. • Create a teepee or X pattern for a well-burning fire. Layer your tinder as the first level of the fire. Stack a few pieces of kindling on top of the tinder in an X or tee-pee shape. Ensure there is enough air to move freely through
Angola and Eden-North Collins Pennysavers
the fire to make ignition easier. Light the tinder from four compass points to get it all to light. Slowly blow air into the fire to allow it to burn hot enough to catch the kindling. Continue to add small pieces of kindling until you have a nicely sized fire. Then you can add larger pieces of dry wood for a big blaze. • Do not use accelerants when starting a fire or keeping it going. Avoid the use of chemicals, including lighter fluid and other accelerants in your campfire. Do not use chemically treated paper or plastic materials in kindling, as they can produce noxious fumes and smoke. Accelerants can cause the fire to burn out of control. Keep the fire contained to what you can manage, and always keep a watchful eye on the fire. Maintaining the Fire You may need to fiddle with the fire from time to time to vent it and allow for equal burning. Having an ample amount of wood on hand will enable you to feed the fire easily. It’s much easier to keep a fire going than start from scratch once it has burned out, especially in the dark. Be mindful of embers that drift in windy conditions. Also, do not put your face or body directly over a fire. If the wood pops, you could be burned. Children should be carefully supervised when around a campfire. Extinguishing the Fire After building your campfire, completely put it out when you are done. Thousands of acres of wilderness are burnt from carelessness with regard to campfires. • Put out the fire a half hour to an hour before you plan to leave the campground. There should be mostly ash and few chunks of coal left if you have planned accordingly and started to wind down the fire before extinguishing it. • Use a stick to stir up the wood and ash and distribute the burning coals and embers. This is to extinguish any remaining flames as much as you can. * Pour water over the hot ashes to drown all embers. It’s not just the red embers you have to worry about. Pour water until all the hissing sounds stop. Avoid standing directly above the fire when you pour the water because it will generate a lot of steam and smoke. If you do not have water on hand, mix dirt or sand with the embers to smother the flames. Continue to do so until the material is cool. • Stir the ashes again with a shovel or stick to further ensure the fire is not still burning. • Make sure everything is wet and cold to the touch before you leave the campsite. If the fire area is too hot to the touch, it’s too hot to leave it because a fire may reignite. • Once you feel that everything is cool, you can scoop the coals and ash into a bag and carry it out of the woods for disposal. Knowing how to safely light, maintain and extinguish a fire is an essential component of safe camping.

Make the most of your ‘staycation’
When the economy took a turn for the worse several
years ago, many families had to cut costs in order to make ends meet. For many families, that meant leaving vacations on the cutting room floor. While the economy has rebounded, uncertainty surrounding that comeback has prevailed for many families, who remain hesitant to book a traditional vacation for fear of spending money they might be better off saving. The sacrifice of traditional vacations has led many families to embrace the “staycation,” wherein families still take time off to be with one another but do so largely at home rather than heading off to an exotic locale or resort. A staycation is a great way for families to rediscover their own communities and spend quality time together without the hustle and bustle of airports or interstates. Families who still find themselves hesitant to commit to a more traditional vacation can heed the following tips to ensure their staycation is a success. • Go out to dinner. Part of the fun of a family vacation is getting to enjoy some nights out on the town. But even if you’re not straying far from home this year, you can still enjoy the cuisine your community has to offer. Dine out a few nights during your time off, making sure to enjoy a few different restaurants instead of relying on one your family frequents throughout the year. Dining out on a weeknight will create the feel of a more traditional vacation, and you might just find a new restaurant you and your family love and can revisit in the years to come. • Absorb the local culture. The daily grind has a way of making life hectic, and chances are you and your family don’t get to enjoy your own community’s culture throughout the year. Take advantage of the time afforded you by your staycation to soak up all the culture and recreational activities your community has to offer. Visit

A staycation can still include some family fun at the beach. nearby museums, take in a performance at your local theater or explore a nearby park, be it for a day of hiking or a more laid back picnic in the sun. This can help everyone reacquaint themselves with the reasons you chose to settle down in your community. • Go camping. Just because you’re having a staycation doesn’t mean you have to stay home. Spend a few nights away from home by taking the family on a camping trip. The fee to stay at a nearby campsite is negligible when compared to the cost of hotel rooms for an entire family, and you won’t spend nearly as much on food because you’ll need to bring your own to the campsite. Camp during the week instead of on the weekends, and you might have more of the campground to yourself. • Head for the beach. In its National Coastal Population Report examining population trends from 1970 to 2020, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration found that 39 percent of the United States population lived in counties directly on the shoreline. North of the United States, Canadians know they are surrounded by three oceans and have access to thousands of additional bodies of water, including the Hudson Bay, Bering Sea and Gulf of St. Lawrence. That means access to the water and the beach is readily available for Americans and Canadians who wish to spend part of their staycation with some sand between their toes and the sound of waves crashing on the shorelines in their ears. Make time to visit the beach on your staycation, and you might be able to recreate the feeling of a more traditional getaway. Staycations have become a staple for families looking to avoid expensive resort vacations. But staying close to home can still be just as fun as traveling abroad.

The Eden Corn Festival celebrates 50 years
I
n 1959 the Eden Chamber of Commerce organized a Garden Festival. It was successful but was not repeated. Then Eden’s sesquicentennial took place and many local groups got involved again, but no plans were made to continue any of the events. During the next year it was decided that the Town should sponsor an annual festival. Thus, the Eden Corn Festival was born! The first of these annual festivals was held in 1964 and was sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Many of the events of that first festival continue to be attractions today. Baseball games, the parade, pet show and beauty pageants trace their roots to that first year. And many of the original vendors still participate today - the Chamber’s chicken barbecue, firemen’s corn, and Legion beer concession. There were thirteen stands that first year: Firemen (2), AFS, Campfire Girls, Grange, 4-H, Girl Scouts, 39ers Social Club, Artcraft, Eden Trap and Field, Little League, Legion Auxiliary and an agricultural exhibit. Approximately 6000 ears of corn were eaten (in 1984 this was over 45,000). Woody Woodworth won the first corn eating contest downing 13 ears in 5 minutes, Henry Agle was the first Corn King with his prize dozen ears going for $15, and Anne Heckman was the first queen pageant winner. The Chamber’s chicken dinner cost 99c that year. Festival profit for the first year was $249.91. For most of its life the Corn Festival has
Angola and Eden-North Collins Pennysavers
been blessed with good weather that brings in crowds of people. However, in 1969 a “tornado” sighting canceled the parade; it was actually a water spout that dissipated upon reaching land. And in 2009 a terrible rain storm started during the parade and did considerable damage to the craft show vendors and many of the tents on the grounds.
In 1974 the festival was extended from two to four days. In 1976 a program to bring in handicapped youngsters for their own chance to ride the rides and enjoy the grounds began as Helping Hand Day. More than 35 years later this is known as “Super Day for Special Kids.” From its first year, the Corn Festival has been held on the grounds of Newell-Faulkner Post 880 American Legion. During its early years, the Chamber of Commerce organized and ran the festival. As it grew in popularity and size, the new Eden Corn Festival, Inc. was formed in 1980 to run the operation. George Guenther, William Robison, Ray Klein, Donald Williams, Wells Rothaug, Jack Smith, Peter Schwert, Bill Edwards, Howard Ralyea, William Faircloth and Robert Reed have all served as chairmen of this event during its long tradition. Jeff Winter is the current chairperson. Many local groups count on the revenue generated by their stands at the Corn Festival to fund activities all year. The Chamber of Commerce continues to cook chicken, the Legion operates the beer concession, and the firemen, their friends and families husk the thousands of ears of corn that are consumed each year during the four days of the festival. It seems that corn has put us on the map!

AN EXPERIENCE IN ART AND MUSIC! World-renowned artist Michael Israel who paints largerthan-life canvasses on-stage to high-energy music can be best described as Cirque du Soleil meets Picasso-an artist, entertainer, and humanitarian whose expression is part David Copperfield, part Jackson Pollack, part Jackie Chan, but all Michael Israel. A leader of the newest art renaissance, flamboyant, rock star sexy and charismatic, Michael electrifies arena-sized audiences with little more than paint and passion. Michael believes that “great art reaches beyond the senses and sensibilities to touch the soul.” Throughout his career, he has steadfastly used his art to further humanitarian causes. His work has raised millions for over 60 charitable organizations including the Special Olympics, the All-Star Children’s Foundation for the Prevention of Child Abuse, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and Ronald McDonald House Charities. Charities are grateful, not only for the money raised by auctioning Michael’s artwork but, moreover, for the ripple effect of his performances that increase awareness for a charity’s mission and bring new and long-term donors. Michael dazzles with gravity-defying leaps to launch

seemingly random splashes of paint that dance across canvasses in near constant motion - upside down, sideways, every which way but up. When he finally does spin the canvas right-side up, it’s clear his strokes are anything but random: what looked like mere splashes now reveal larger-than-life images that encompass popular cultural icons, including the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Elton John; sports legends, such as Muhammad Ali and Tiger Woods; as well his own creations that tell a heart warming story: a firefighter cradling a child in the shadow of the Twin Towers or some other masterpiece. His artistic journey began as a child painting on the walls of his parents’ home. Now, Michael’s work has gone on to touch the lives of millions and he is likely to become one of the most popular artists ever. Michael has performed at some of the world’s most celebrated venues, while sharing those stages with some of the world’s most prominent figures. Whether performing at a Presidential Gala, Monte Carlo, Portugal, Las Vegas or on the Olympic Medals stage in Salt Lake City, creating a $100,000 portrait of billionaire investor Warren Buffet at the Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders Meeting or performing with musical legends Garth Brooks and Bruce Springsteen, Michael has garnered notable recognition across the globe proving his axiom: “When imagination exceeds reality, dreams are born!”

Double D.A.B. riding stable
Darlene Breads and Douglas Bowen found-
ed Double D.A.B. Riding Stable in 1982. The stable was created, and continues to operate, based on a passion for horses and love of nature. The stable is still owned and operated by Darlene and Douglas, as well as their daughter, Chelsey. The farm started out with a single old barn, but has expanded to three separate barns, an indoor riding arena, an office, over 60 acres of grass pasture, and more than 300 acres of wooded trails. At the stable, you will find a farm-like environment with a menagerie of animals including horses, donkeys, goats, llamas, dogs, cats, geese, and even a pot-bellied pig. The pride and joy of the stable is its herd of over 80 horses. The herd consists mostly of Appaloosas and American Paint Horses, but there are 10 distinct breeds of horses and ponies. Most of the horses at Double D.A.B. Riding Stable were born and raised at the stable, and all of them were trained here. Double D.A.B. Riding Stable offers many activities centered on the horses. The stable gives guided trail rides, sunset trail rides, pony rides, riding lessons, summer day camps, and a petting farm. The scenic trail rides are the most popular attraction. Guides take customers on horseback rides through miles of scenic, wooded
DRIVEWAY SEALS & STRIPES
trails. The beautiful trails include streams, gently rolling hills, fields of wildflowers, and a chance to see some local wildlife. All trail rides are geared towards people looking to spend some leisurely time on horseback and with nature. No experience is necessary, as the well-trained horses and knowledgeable guides will take care of the horseback riders. The stable is fun for the whole family. Adults and children age 6 and up can enjoy the scenic trail rides and sunset rides. Hand lead pony rides on one of the adorable ponies are available for children too young or not quite adventurous enough for the trail rides. Riding lessons and summer day camps are available for anyone interested in learning more about horses and horseback riding. Lessons and day camps are available for adults and children 5 years and older. The petting farm is available to all ages and is included with all rides. For some great pictures and to find out more information, check out the stable’s website at www.doubledab.net. You can also connect with Double D.A.B. Riding Stable and see more great pictures on its Facebook page. Contact the stable to learn more and to schedule your reservations today by calling (716)736-4418. The stable is located at 5811 Welch Hill Road in Ripley, New York.

How-to pack a car safely
This is the prime season for road trips, which many people feel are the most affordable vacation option available. They also provide unsurpassed views of the countryside and the ability to slow down and customize the trip as desired.
Packing the car for a road trip can be complicated. Although the goal may be to cram as much as possible into the car and get on the road quickly, part of the safety plan for this year’s adventure should include packing properly to avoid injury. Americans and Canadians combined drive trillions of miles in any given year. Although it is difficult to make a direct comparison between how many people choose driving as opposed to flying, when comparing data from the Federal Highway Administration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, for every mile Americans flew they drove about six more in 2011. With so many miles clocked on the road, it is essential to make the experience as safe as possible -- and that means properly securing belongings in a vehicle before getting on the road. In 2009, a laptop computer became a projectile that killed its owner. Heather Storey of Surrey, British Columbia, was driving to work when her vehicle was hit by a tow truck. Her laptop was propelled at such a force that it caused a deadly injury to her head. Unsecured or improperly packed items in a car or truck have the potential to cause serious injury when on the road or, at the very least, may obscure visibility when driving, says Consumer Reports. The organization and others offer drivers a series of tips that can help make travel safer. • Adjust tire pressure prior to travel. Consult the owners manual to determine the proper tire pressure when the vehicle is carrying a full load. This will not only help alleviate unnecessary wear and tear on the tires, but also can help to prevent a tire blow-out.

• Know the car’s limits. It also is important to stay below the maximum permitted weight or maximum load capacity for the car or truck. Consumer Reports says that the capacity for small SUVs can span from 825 pounds to 1,155 pounds. Midsize SUVs may carry anywhere from 900 pounds to 1,405 pounds. Minivan capacities can vary significantly as well. The load capacity is specified in the owner’s manual. • Store the heaviest items at the lowest, most central part of the vehicle. This helps reduce effects on handling that can lead to problems with steering or braking. Drivers should keep the overall center of gravity lower to help reduce the risk of rollover. • Make sure everything is secured in the car or truck. Use crates or boxes to house smaller items. Use straps or rope to tie down anything loaded in the back of a truck or SUV to the vehicle’s cargo anchors. Load as much as you can into a car’s trunk to avoid having loose items rolling around inside the passenger area. • Keep a clear view of mirrors and the rear of the vehicle. Do not pack any items higher than the level of the rear seats. Not only can these items fly forward in the event of sharp braking or a crash, but they also may obscure the driver’s view of the road. • Invest in a roof rack or cargo box. Only place light items on the roof of the car so you can free up interior space. Secure roof items tightly, as they will be caught by the updraft while driving and you do not want to send them airborne and onto the roadway. Also, if you do use the roof for storage, be aware of how much taller the items will make your vehicle so you know if you can safely drive beneath underpasses. • Make sure passengers can be seated safely. Packing a car doesn’t always mean being able to fit suitcases and belongings. It also means ensuring passengers can ride safely. Do not seat more passengers than can be restrained by the seat belts in the car. If there is not enough room, it is safer in the long run to take two cars. Pack a vehicle safely and make sure it is maintained before heading out on your first road trip of the season.

Help dogs cope with separation anxiety
Dog owners are typically bewildered when man’s best
friend exhibits destructive or disruptive behavior. Chewing furniture or urinating or defecating indoors is upsetting for dog owners, who might feel they need to discipline their pooch to ensure it does not happen again. But discipline might not be the remedy for destructive or disruptive behavior, which might be a sign of separation anxiety. Separation anxiety can occur when a dog is upset after it is separated from its owner or other members of the household. Dogs may become agitated or depressed when their owners are getting ready to leave for the day or the pets may begin barking within minutes of their owner leaving. Upon the owner’s return, the dog might behave as if their owner was gone for days and days. Understanding separation anxiety can help dog owners and their dogs overcome the condition, which can be overwhelming for dogs. What are the symptoms of separation anxiety? Destructive or disruptive behavior is not always a byproduct of separation anxiety. However, the following symptoms may indicate separation anxiety. • Urinating or defecating while no one is home: Dogs who urinate or defecate when left home alone might be suffering from separation anxiety. If a dog does this in the presence of its owner, then chances are it has not been trained properly and is not suffering from separation anxiety. • Destructive behavior: Door frames, furniture, window sills and other objects around the house are common chewing targets for dogs suffering from separation anxiety. Such behavior is done while owners are away, and it can harm the dog, causing damage to its nails, paws and teeth. * Escape attempts: Some dogs dealing with separation anxiety may try to escape from their confines when left alone. Dogs might attempt to dig or chew through doors. When a dog has separation anxiety, its escape attempts are limited to those times when it is separated from its owner. * Coprophagia: Some dogs suffering from separation anxiety will defecate and then consume some or all of their excrement. Why do dogs develop separation anxiety? The ASPCA notes that there is no conclusive evidence as to why dogs develop separation anxiety. But the organization also notes that dogs adopted from shelters tend
Angola and Eden-North Collins Pennysavers
to exhibit behaviors associated with separation anxiety more than dogs who are with the same owner since birth, suggesting that dogs might feel a sense of abandonment when their owner leaves for the day that is similar to the abandonment they felt when their initial owners or someone else brought them to the shelter. Those feelings of abandonment may be triggered by certain situations, such as when a dog gets a new owner or the dog’s schedule changes or the family moves to a new residence. In addition, when a member of the household is suddenly absent, whether that person has passed away or moved out, then this absence may also trigger separation anxiety. How can a dog with separation anxiety be helped? Helping a dog cope with separation anxiety involves teaching the dog to enjoy or learn to tolerate its time alone. But before that can be done, the ASPCA advises dog owners to visit their veterinarian to rule out other medical issues with similar symptoms. The aforementioned symptoms of separation anxiety might be indicative of a different medical issue, and the vet can determine if that’s the case before dog owners go forward with treating separation anxiety. Once the vet has ruled out other medical issues, then dog owners can consider the following ways to help their dog cope with its anxiety. • Associate being alone with something good. A dog suffering from separation anxiety associates being alone with a negative. If dog owners can turn that negative association into a positive one, then the dog’s condition might improve. When leaving the house, give the dog a treat or a food-dispensing toy so it associates your departure with something positive. This might be most effective with dogs suffering mild separation anxiety. • Work to make the dog more accustomed to being alone. Dogs who suffer from severe separation anxiety may benefit from more frequent yet shorter periods of separation. These shorter periods of separation are not likely to produce anxiety. Over time gradually increase their length. The dog may gradually become more comfortable with being alone. • Control your own emotions. Control your emotions when leaving for the day and when arriving home. Give the dog a good-bye pat when you leave in the morning, and then be mellow when you arrive home, allowing the dog time to relax and calm down before paying him or her any significant attention. This is difficult for many dog owners, but it can help your dog overcome separation anxiety. * Do not punish the dog. A dog does not engage in destructive or disruptive behavior while its owner is away out of spite or to be disobedient. In many cases, the dog does so because it is suffering from separation anxiety, so punishing such behavior will likely only worsen that anxiety and the bad behavior that comes with it. Be patient and understanding when a dog exhibits behaviors associated with separation anxiety and resist the urge to punish the dog. Separation anxiety can occur in varying degrees and manifest itself in various ways. Dog owners who react calmly and thoughtfully to separation anxiety are more likely to be successful in their attempts to help their dog overcome the condition.

Cruising is one of the least labor-intensive vacations for travelers.
Cruising is the no-work vacation
People who are looking for a laid-back and fuss-free vacation can turn to cruising.
Cruising remains popular and that popularity continues to grow. Data from the Cruise Line International Association, Inc. market profile survey for 2011 found that cruising ranks second as the most popular vacation behind landbased nonresort vacations. Almost 71 percent of the total vacation market has an interest in cruising. Among past cruisers, survey respondents said they will most likely take another cruise over the next three years. CLIA research indicates that cruisers tend to be middle-aged, predominantly married couples with a median income of $97,000. The higher household income may account for the ability to cruise amid a floundering economy. What’s behind the popularity of cruising? One of the main draws to cruising is its relative ease. From the moment a ship embarks, cruisers are aboard a floating hotel. All of their needs are met within the confines of the ship, and there’s no hassle with baggage or layovers like there is for air travel. There’s also no traffic on the open seas, and cruisers can customize their days and do as little or as much as they like.
The all-inclusive nature of cruising extends to meals. A popular factor of cruising is that one needn’t look far for the next meal. Unlike other hotels and resorts, there’s no traveling far for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and passengers don’t have to carry around extra money for meal expenses. Cruise packages often include all-you-can-eat options. This can seem like a bargain, as the cost of meals on other vacations tends to be a significant. According to Ehow.com, vacationers spend upwards of $600 in food for a week-long vacation. In comparison, cruising costs on average $1,500 per person, which covers the accommodations, meals, some excursions, and onboard activities. Travelers who are not interested in planning a day-to-day itinerary to keep busy often like the amenities of cruising. Most cruises have a cruise director who leads guests in various activities during the day. Most modern-day cruise ships offer ample entertainment options. From swimming pools to skating rinks to rock walls to surfing simulators, there are activities for most age groups. For an additional cost, cruisers can leave the ship and go on specialized excursions at ports of call. Still, cruisers who just want to sit on deck and relax can do just that. Because most cruise ships travel in international waters, they are not governed by the rules of the land. For example, gambling is often legal aboard ships when they are out of port. Cruising remains one of the most popular types of vacations. And since CLIA
