SCS VISITS THE GREAT PUMPKIN FARM
On Monday, October 15th, Southtowns Catholic School's Kindergarten, 1st Grade, and 2nd Grade all went to visit The Great Pumpkin Farm! The children had lots of fun watching a puppet show with singing chickens, feeding goats and alpacas at their corrals, and taking a hayride through to the pumpkin patch. At the end of the hayride, each child was able to pick out a pumpkin to take home with them! Our classes also observed all different size pumpkins. Some pumpkins were small enough to fit in the palm of your hand while others we so huge, and weighed as much as 1400 pounds!! The children’s excitement wasn’t hindered by the weather, and as a thank you each child also went home with a wonderful goodie bag to remember their time at The Great Pumpkin Farm. NORTH COLLINS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MEASURING UP MATH NIGHT
North Collins Elementary School PTA Sponsored its first Family Fun Event of the school year on October 24th. Measuring Up Math Night at the North Collins Elementary School really measured up. The cafetorium was bustling with students, teachers, families and friends all computing, calculating and thinking mathematically. There were games and activities for all ages PK- 6th grade. As the students entered into the building, their ticket in the door was to get measured up (height), charted and placed on a line plot that is now on display for students to use to answer morning announcement questions. With about 130 people in attendance, the crowd split to make way for a flash mob of dancers. The dancers performed a math dance and song to reinforce and teach the order of operations. Many of you may know it as PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction). People of all ages were getting down with math. All students participating in Math Night had the opportunity to win math prizes by answering measurement questions appropriate for their grade level and the new CCLS (Common Core Learning Standards). __________

MIKE RANDALL AWARDS TEACHER OF THE WEEK AT SCS
Mike Randall from WKBW-TV, Channel 7 recently awarded Mrs. Diane Zahradnik, teacher at Southtowns Catholic School in Lakeview, the "Teacher of The week" award. Mr Randall came to the school with a camera crew and presented Mrs. Zahradnik with a certificate and plaque for her outstanding contributions as the MIddle School English Language Art and Literature teacher at the school. Mrs. Zahradnik has been teaching for more than 30 years and has spent the last thirteen years educating the students at Southtowns Catholic School. "Teacher of the week" is awarded to an outstanding teacher who is nominated by her students. In order to be considered, students must submitt a letter explaining why they believe their teacher deserves to be given this honor. The letters are read by staff at Channel 7 and the teacher is chosen to receive this ward. __________
The week of October 22nd, Southtowns Catholic kicked off Red Ribbon Week with a variety of ways to show we are drug free. The students were asked to add red, white and blue to the school uniform to celebrate "I Elect to be Drug Free", add tie-dye to their uniform to celebrate "Say 'Peace Out' to Drugs" and wear crazy socks to "Sock it to Drugs". Other activities included planting red tulip bulbs & signing a drug free pledge. On Friday, October 26th, the sheriff helicopter landed in the parking lot and students toured the Buffalo Police Department Underwater Rescue Unit, tried on SWAT team gear, walked through an Army Truck, sat in a Town of Evans Police Car and saw how a Drug dog goes to work. All the kids took the Red Ribbon Drug Free Oath. Dining Out on a Budget People examining their monthly budgets often find that dining out is one of the main sources of exces‑ sive spending. Many are quick to think a healthy budgeting remedy is to cease dining out completely. This doesn’t have to be the case; it’s possible to dine out even if you’re keeping your budget in check. It simply takes some planning and a few minor adjustments. Discounts and Coupons Much in the way you’d clip coupons for grocery shopping, you can check for specials or coupons for favorite restaurants. Newspapers often run coupons for pizza parlors, chain restaurants and local establish‑ ments. Check the mail for coupons that come in bulk mailers. Oftentimes, you’ll find there are restaurant coupons inside. Signing up to be on a restaurants e-mail or mailing list could also result in special discounts that are not available to the general public.
Enjoy your Holidays!
Early Bird Specials Many a joke has been made about the senior community dining out early in the evening. But they are on to something — reduced cost menus. Restaurants may feature a lower-cost lunch menu up until 4 p.m. in the afternoon. Others offer “happy hour” deals that may be discounted menu items, some even half-price. Another cost-saving idea is to dine on “off-days.” Restaurants may have lower-priced deals if you visit the establishment on a weekday that is not typically known for dining out, such as a Tuesday.
We also do Catering!
Family Style Restaurants Who hasn’t ordered food for the family only to discover one or more of the kids leave most if not all of their food on the plate? Some family-style places offer “kids eat free” nights or enable you to order dishes that are larger in size and can be shared among a few people (without a sharing charge). Other restaurants cater especially to the family crowd, with prices that are generally lower and more accommodating.
Before you go shopping, stop in for a good meal!
Joey V’s Pizza 6884 Erie Road, Derby
Skip the Extras Appetizers, soft drinks and desserts can add a good deal to the bill. Some restaurants charge $2 to $3 dollars for a glass of soda or iced tea. Multiply that by a family of four and you’ve already added $8 to $12 dollars to the bill. Opt for water, instead. Also, appetizers fill you up and may not be necessary when a good-portioned meal is on the horizon. Pass on the appetizers and save another $10 or more dollars. At the end of the meal — if you still have room — dessert can beshared if cost is an issue. This way you watch your wallet and your waistline. Prix Fixe vs. A la Carte Some restaurants give the option of a packaged meal at a set price or several items that can be ordered separately. If you have big eaters who are looking for quanity, prix fixe may prove the better bargain. If you only want to sample one or two items, then a la carte could be the way to go.

Tips for families dining out for the holidays Dining out for the holidays is a tradition for many families. Dining out has many advantages, including no cleanup once the meal is over and a more varied menu that provides guests more choices than the standard holiday fare. Dining out can also prove less expensive for the holiday host. The tab at the end of a night on the town can be split among the guests, whereas the food bill when hosting a holiday dinner at home is often left to the host and the host alone. But dining out for the holidays does require some work, even if none of that work involves scrubbing dirty dishes or finding extra seats for guests. When planning a holiday dinner at a restaurant, consider the following tips. * Do your homework. A favorite restaurant might be tops on your list, but do some comparison shopping before settling on a restaurant. Prices can vary greatly when it comes to private parties, and some might not even be capable of accommodating the kind of large party that might accompany you for a holi‑ day dinner. Start shopping well before the holiday season to see who offers the best menu, the most affordable prices and the best accommodations. * Choose a restaurant that’s accessible to everyone. Guests can stay overnight when a holiday dinner is at a relative’s house. However, guests will almost cer‑ tainly be driving home after a holiday dinner at a restaurant. Make everyone’s post-meal commute home as easy as possible by choosing a centrally located restaurant that’s equidistant from everyone’s home. Consider the proximity of public transportation to the restaurant as well, as some guests might prefer to avoid holiday traffic by taking public transportation. * Inquire about a restaurant’s pricing flexibility. There might be room for negotia‑ tion regarding the menu, including choices on the food and beverages being offered, but you’ll never know if you don’t ask. Traditional holiday fare will likely be available, but discuss alternatives to such menu items, including if there is anything for vegetarians or if there is a gluten-free meal option. In addition, some restaurants might be willing to negotiate price, especially for large parties. * Sign a contract if your party will be especially large. Contracts can ensure that especially large dinner parties don’t go awry. This may require a deposit in ad‑ vance of the holiday, but the contract should spell out the menu, including food and beverages that will be offered, and the final price of the meal. * Be an early bird. If the responsibility of planning or hosting the dinner has fallen on your shoulders, then get to the restaurant before your guests. This gives you time to ensure everything is ready and increases the chances your holiday dinner will go according to plan. * Don’t forget invitations. Treat the holiday dinner like you might treat a wed‑ ding reception or a birthday party, inviting guests several weeks in advance so everyone has time to plan their trip. Include directions to the restaurant in your invitations, and remind guests that holiday traffic might require they leave earlier to make it to the restaurant on time for the start of the meal.

Origins of a holiday staple The thick, spiced drink we know as eggnog has become synonymous with the holidays. It is so linked with the Christmas season that a per‑ son may be hard-pressed to find it sold in the supermarket any other time of the year. But eggnog wasn’t always the holiday beverage it has become. Eggnog is believed to have originated in 17th century Europe, primar‑ ily as a drink for the elite, since the ingredients in the beverage were hard to come by and thusly relegated to the very rich. There are different theories on the origins of the word eggnog itself. Some believe it has gotten its name from the Old English word “nog,” which meant “strong beer.” The “egg” refers to one of the ingredients in the beverage, fresh eggs. Others surmise that it comes from the word “noggin,” which was a vessel for serving drinks in taverns. The drink was called “egg in a noggin,” which was shortened to “eggnog.” Still, there are others who say its name is derived from the term “grog,” which was another term for booze. “Egg n’ grog” was eventu‑ ally abbreviated to “eggnog.” Although there is little certainty to the origins of the name, the recipe for eggnog has essentially remained unchanged throughout the centuries. It consists of beaten eggs, cream or milk and sugar mixed with some sort of alcoholic spirit. The Old English were believed to mix it with wine, though once the drink was brought to the New World, colonists substituted rum for the wine. Rum was readily available through tradesman running between the Americas and the Caribbean and therefore less expensive than another spirit. As America grew and eggnog was enjoyed in different parts of the country, the rum was replaced with regional spirits, including bourbon or grain alcohol. Other ingredients were also added to give it a customized flavor. However, the use of nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves has become traditional flavors for the holiday brew. Although eggnog is widely enjoyed throughout the holiday season, in the past it was served at special events and social occasions. As a warmed beverage it can easily chase away winter’s chill. This is how it may have come to be enjoyed primarily during the holidays. Love it or hate it, eggnog is a drink that can evoke strong feelings of the holidays within minutes. There are variations of eggnog sold commercially, but many people swear by homemade versions for their taste and authenticity. Try your own homemade eggnog with this recipe, courtesy of Cooks.com.

The family of John Cardarelli would like to thank our friends, neighbors and parish family for all the kindness, prayers and support shown to us during John’s illness and passing. Special thanks to Dr. O’Gorman and “the girls” for taking such good care of John for so many years; to Chris and Dr. Caulkins at Hospice for their compassion, and TLC these past 6 months; to Father Walter for his many visits and support; to the Eden Police and Legion honor guards who served at the funeral service; and to Gabriel & Bill at Laing’s Funeral Home for making everything come together perfectly. We are so blessed to be part of this awesome community and to have so many wonderful friends. Thanks to all who shared a part in John’s journey on this earth. He treasured the time he had with each and every one of you. God Bless, Allison Cardarelli, John, Jennifer, Ken & Griffin

THANKSGIVING MEMORIES
With the holidays quickly approaching, I wanted to stop for a moment and reflect. When I was a child and into my late teens, my grandma always had all of our family over for Thanksgiving dinner. This was no small task! All of our family included my parents, my sister and me, my mom’s 4 sisters, their spouses and children and my mom’s brother (I’ll never forget the year the adults were trying to decide if we should go ahead and eat or keep waiting for Uncle Jack, who was hunting, when he showed up with an albino deer he had shot. It wasn’t even white from being dragged through the woods and mud. It looked like a big dirty dog!) Depending on who lived where and were able to make it, that included from 12 to 15 grandchildren! The only way this happened was that my grandparents were the custodians/caretakers at the First Church of Evans, and the church allowed us to use the community building and kitchen. What happy, and some not so happy, memories there are! Grandma and the women cooked, the men cleaned up. The kids ran around, hid from each other, made up and performed skits - anything anyone came up with that the others agreed upon. There was an age difference of 5 years between the youngest of the older grandchildren (me) and the younger group. How we couldn’t wait to move up from the “kid’s table”! After my grandpa passed away, my grandma had to move in 1988 to the Steepleview apartments and obviously she couldn’t host the event any longer. My mom and aunts tried, but it was never the same. The kids were growing up, moving away and having their own families and having to share the holidays with their in-laws. I myself began going to my future father-in-law’s home, two small children in tow, and started making more happy memories. That was in 1993. Although he had a small home, we all squeezed in, a whole new family for me that made me welcome from the start, including my husband’s stepsisters & brothers and their families. That lasted until, tragically, my father-in-law passed away in 2008. When Thanksgiving rolled around, his three sons didn’t even want to talk about it, let alone gather together for this meal without their loving father. That’s when I was introduced to the LACC sponsored Community Thanksgiving Dinner. I felt it was the perfect opportunity for my family! We didn’t want to celebrate, we didn’t want to sit at home, maybe, just maybe, we could make a difference to someone else who didn’t want to sit at home either. I joined the committee and volunteered myself (and I will admit, family members who I had not consulted) to help out. Each year since, I have watched in amazement as this event has grown in size, both volunteers and those who choose to dine with us! We are actually spreading out to the surrounding communities, including Eden, North Collins and Silver Creek, and this year expect to feed 500, yes, I said 500, people! To be able to go somewhere where everyone is so friendly and welcoming, whether alone or a whole family, it warms the heart. The food and fellowship is so enjoyable, my brothers-in-law join us now too. My husband and two sons volunteer their time so we get to spend it together. We can go individually or together to the prayer corner. No one judges or asks questions other than how is your dinner, would you like dessert, and if you have any suggestions for improvement! The food can’t be beat - your choice of white or dark meat, ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes, yams, tossed salad, cranberry sauce and so on! Oh, and the desserts! If you have room! Deliveries are made to those who can’t come out, and leftovers are donated. This year, as always, we will be at the Most Precious Blood Hall on Thanksgiving Day, from 1-4 pm. That CRAZY TURKEY will most likely show up! There is handicapped access and things for the kids to do. I’m going to let the bird out of the cage - this year we’re going to try a Christmas Day Roast Beef Dinner, also sponsored by LACC, same time, same place, deliveries and all! Blessings, Brooke

THE BENEFITS OF MEDICAL MASSAGE
After an injury or surgery people will often avoid using the surrounding muscles until the injury has healed. This causes the muscles around the area of injury to become stiff and sore. Medical massage therapy promotes circulation and mobility which helps heal and rehabilitate the muscle. Massage stimulates proper functioning while also preventing additional injury. Medical Massage is result oriented and the treatment is specifically directed to resolve conditions that have been diagnosed and prescribed by a Physician. The massage therapist may use a variety of modalities or procedures during the treatment, but will focus the treatment only on the areas of the body related to the diagnosis and prescription. Medical Massage often: · Decreases Pain, Inflammation & Irritation · Releases Tension · Alleviates Stress · Improves Circulation · Aids in the Relief of Nerve Compression & Entrapment. · Increases Flexibility and Range Of Motion · Calms the Nervous System Your medical massage therapist will work closely with you to develop a treatment plan to meet your needs. Many insurance plans do cover medical massage, so it is important to check your plan coverage. Teresa Campbell, Licensed Massage Therapist, Invision Health and the Brain and Spine Center __________
