Healthy values and attitudes Dear friends,

Low Yen Ling Mayor of South West District

Rakan-rakan sekelian, Masihkah anda ingat pada Captain Green, Sharity Elephant, Singa the Lion, Teamy the Bee dan Water Wally?

Do you remember Captain Green, Sharity Elephant, Singa the Lion, Teamy the Bee and Water Wally? These five iconic mascots were created in our nation’s early years to foster a more gracious and eco-friendly society and productive workforce. The values these mascots represent are just as relevant today, as we move into our next lap towards SG100. The South West CDC is reconnecting with these values through various fun and exciting programmes, such as Let’s Cam-Paint @ South West. In June, Singaporeans witnessed the spectacular performance of Team Singapore at the SEA Games. I would like to commend the SEA Games athletes living in our South West District! Your display of solid determination and great sportsmanship brought us together and inspired more young residents to reach for the stars. This is a wonderful gift to our nation for its Golden Jubilee. The same Singapore Spirit can be seen in the 56 National Day Awards recipients (Public Service) from the South West District. Selfless, generous and always ready to help someone in need, they have contributed much to our community and Singapore. Thank you for your good work! Over the past year, we rallied over 600 corporate and community partners to assist more than 300,000 residents in the South West District. The South West CDC continues to nurture the caring Singapore Spirit by creating opportunities for residents to touch the lives of the less-able and build neighbourly bonds. By pooling our resources and expertise together, we can bridge the gaps in our community to build a caring and inclusive South West.

the Community Besides the application, these values will be further shared with younger residents through a set of five colouring postcards, which have been sent to households in the South West District. These postcards will also be used as part of the curriculum at PCF Sparkletots Preschool @ Taman Jurong. “The five mascots bring out similar virtues which we teach our children ‌ these include being caring, courteous and considerate,â€? said Ms Carole See, the centre’s principal. The application is an initiative under South West Celebrates! – Our SG50 Stories, the South West CDC’s effort to involve the community in Golden Jubilee celebrations. IVE BELOVED SINGAPORE mascots — Captain Green, Sharity Elephant, Singa the Lion, Water Wally and Teamy the Bee — can now be found on your mobile device, thanks to Let’s Cam-Paint @ South West, the first mobile application to feature these familiar characters, past and present. The application was developed by the South West Community Development Council (CDC), in collaboration with the National Environment Agency, National Council of Social Service, Public Utilities Board, Singapore Kindness Movement and SPRING Singapore, supported by TeckWah Value Chain Pte Ltd and the School of Science and Technology, Singapore. Comprising several interactive games, the application allows younger residents to learn about Singapore’s history in a fun manner, while also highlighting the important role that such mascots play in national campaigns that contribute towards nation-building. Successfully completing each game unlocks a

photo template, which allows users to take a selfie with the mascots. “We hope children and families will enjoy the application together, as we reflect on how our nation has grown and developed through the years, said Ms Low Yen Ling, Mayor of South West District. She added that the application will have a nostalgic appeal for the many Singaporeans who grew up with the mascots. The application was launched by Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Adviser to Jurong GRC Grassroots Organisations (GROs), in conjunction with the opening of PCF Sparkletots Preschool @ Taman Jurong. Residents were treated to a lively performance where Captain Green, Sharity Elephant, Singa the Lion and Water Wally danced to the beat of ‘Stand Up for Singapore’. Tanisha Srinivasan, 5, and her two-year-old sister Pratiksha were visibly excited to catch a glimpse of their favourite mascots. She said, “Water Wally’s the cutest. Volunteer to be an AA

B

The Law Society of Singapore Pro Bono Services Office is looking at increasing the current pool of AA volunteers. For more information or to sign up, send an email to APPROPRIATEADULTSECRETARIAT @LAWSOC.ORG.SG.

EING QUESTIONED by a Police Investigation Officer can be a nerve-wracking affair for anyone. For individuals with special needs, such as those with intellectual disabilities and autism, being in such a situation can be even more distressing. Since January this year, these vulnerable individuals no longer have to brave a trip to the police station and deal with such situations alone. With the launch of the Appropriate Adult Scheme by the Law Society of Singapore Pro Bono Services Office, an individual with special needs may now be accompanied by a trained volunteer — called an Appropriate Adult (AA) — who acts as a bridge between him or her and the Police Investigation Officer. There are currently 134 specially-trained volunteers, and Jurong West resident Mdm Zaridah Hon is one of them.

GIVING VOICE For volunteer and South West resident Mdm Zaridah Hon, the Appropriate Adult Scheme is a noble commitment like no other.

Mdm Zaridah Hon became a volunteer with the support of her husband.

Mdm Zaridah, a mother of three boys aged 16, 20 and 21, decided to come forward to volunteer because one of her sons has a learning disability. “I know how challenging it can be for people with special needs to communicate effectively. To be able to assist them in a potentially stressful situation like a police investigation, to me, is a worthy cause and time well-spent,” said the 46-year-old pharmaceutical technician. Mdm Zaridah has been activated six times since she attended a full-day training session late last year which equipped her with basic knowledge of the law and ways to approach an individual with special needs. The scheme addresses concerns that those with special needs could unwittingly admit to offences they did not commit, provide inaccurate information or incriminate themselves — all because of their poor communication skills. When contacted by the Law Society via SMS, an AA is expected to be present at the relevant police station within an hour of activation by the police.

THE SOONER THE BETTER South West CDC targets to provide free mammogram screenings to 3,000 women from low-income families in the district by 2017.

M Mdm Jamilah Bte Suyud’s secret to active ageing: walk often and go for regular check-ups.

AMMOGRAM SCREENINGS don’t prevent breast cancer, but they can save lives by detecting the disease in its early stages. According to nonprofit organisation Breastcancer.org, mammogram screenings lower the risk of dying from breast cancer by 35 per cent in women over the age of 50. The launch of Mammogram for Early Detection Screening Project @ South West, or MEDS @ South West, in October 2014 has enabled women from low-income families to receive free mammogram screenings. To be eligible, the South West resident must be above 50 years old and a blue or orange Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS) card holder.

Early Detection Can Save Your Life! There are four stages to breast cancer, with 1 indicating localised cancer and 4 referring to a cancer that has spread to another organ in the body. The earlier the disease is diagnosed, the higher the survival rate.

6

Percentage of diagnosed women still alive at five years: Stage 1 90% Stage 2 81.45% Stage 3 61.04% Stage 4 20.03% Source: Singapore Cancer Registry Annual Registry Report, 2009-2013

She must not have been screened in the last 24 months or experienced any breast abnormalities, and she must not have any known history of breast cancer. The South West Community Development Council (CDC) partnered Jurong Health Services (JurongHealth) to provide such screenings for a total of 3,000 women, or 1,000 women annually, over three years. The initiative was rolled out after the Health Promotion Board discovered that a large number of women in Singapore have never been screened for breast cancer. Mdm Jamilah Bte Suyud, a JurongHealth patient and Teban Gardens resident, is an advocate of regular mammograms. “Each of us is responsible for our own well-being,” she said. “At my age, if I don’t take caree of my own body and go for regular checkeckups, including mammograms, who else can?” The 59-year-old, who has three ree grandchildren, aged 13 to 18, takes daily walks in the park near her home, and nd makes sure to go for a mammogram m screening once every two years.

ARE YOU AT RISK?

BREAST CANCER

is the most common cancer among Singaporean women. Dr Tan Chuan Chien (below), Consultant, General Surgery, JurongHealth, says there are common features among women who develop breast cancer, but these are not absolute. Here are some of the known risk factors:

If you are above the age of 40 If you have a strong family history of breast cancer If you have never been pregnant or had your first child after 30 years old If you have had more ha menstruation cycles menstr because you started becau at aan early age or went through w menopause later m

NEW & IMPROVED TOWARDS ASSISTING THE NEEDY, BONDING THE PEOPLE, AND CONNECTING THE COMMUNITY The South West CDC, together with corporate and community partners, have introduced a broad range of initiatives and programmes to better plug service gaps, as well as widen and strengthen the social safety net so that no one falls through the cracks. These are some of the new and improved initiatives in FY2014/2015:

Family Bliss @ South West Package Baby Blisscard @ South West has turned 10! This first membership programme for newborns saw new elements, from a new look with customised name and photograph of the newborn to additional benefits from pro-family partners, namely Abbott Laboratories (Singapore) Pte Ltd, Cryoviva Singapore, NTUC Income and OCBC Bank, to better engage and appeal to young families. As part of the celebrations, the Family Bliss @ South West Package was launched in September 2014 to celebrate family life, support families, and promote a family-friendly environment in the South West District. The Package also included the Family Bliss Roadshows @ South West that brought the roving Families for Life Mobile CafĂŠ together with family-centric activities to community events in the District.

South West Emergency Relief Fund The South West Emergency Relief Fund was launched to provide immediate to interim assistance to needy residents facing emergencies or crisis situations. Supported by philanthropist Dr Tor Lam Huat, Akira Corporation Pte Ltd and King Koil Singapore, the Fund was a result of emerging needs and community feedback. Since September 2014, the fund provided prompt and direct relief to 19 families who were affected by fires, bed bug infestations and sudden loss of income.

Community Legal Clinic @ South West The Community Legal Clinic (CLC) @ South West was set up in partnership with The Law Society of Singapore to provide pro bono legal advice and services to South West residents. Helmed by volunteer lawyers on a weekly basis, the CLC is part of ongoing efforts to provide holistic assistance to vulnerable residents, and has helped close to 150 residents.

South West Financial Life Skills for Seniors The South West Financial Life Skills for Seniors Programme was rolled out to empower seniors towards a better quality of life, retirement adequacy and active ageing. The programme, which was supported by the POSB Bank Singapore (POSB), Office of Public Guardian, and Securities Investors Association (Singapore), has since graduated close to 150 seniors who have gone through an eight (8)-hour programme on life stage planning, wealth management and Lasting Power of Attorney.

SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR PARTNERS! EMPOWERING THE NEXT GENERATION DSO National Laboratories – Giving to Education For the third consecutive year, DSO National Laboratories (DSO) has raised $125,000 for the South West CDC – DSO Education Grant, which goes towards defraying schooling expenses for over 1,500 secondary to pre-tertiary students from low-income families in the South West District. This Grant is part of the WeCare @ South West Initiative that strengthens the social safety net for the needy. Staff from DSO have gone to great distances to raise funds for the Education Grant. From selling cross-stitched handicrafts at festive bazaars to climbing Mount Kinabalu Southeast Asia’s tallest mountain, more than 300 DSO staff were involved in the fundraising activities.

“We understand acutely how people and knowledge shape the future of our country. The South West CDC – DSO Education Grant is our modest contribution to the development of our human capital.” - Mr Quek Gim Pew, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), DSO National Laboratories

“ExxonMobil believes that getting a good education helps students of today get good jobs in future. We hope that the students who receive these transport bursaries will be able to fulfil their dreams and in turn, contribute positively to their families and communities.” - Mr Boyd Barrilleaux, Manufacturing Director, ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Pte Ltd

ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Pte Ltd – Reaching More Residents ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Pte Ltd is the South West CDC’s longest serving partner and has been supporting community programmes in the South West District, spanning environment and education for the vulnerable for the past 13 years. February 2015 marked the 10th year of the South West CDC - ExxonMobil Transport Bursary. Close to $330,000 worth of bursary funds has been disbursed over the past 10 years, benefitting more than 5,000 vulnerable students in the district. In June 2014, 320 staff from ExxonMobil came together to pack and distribute groceries to 1,200 rental households under Adopt-A-Rental Block @ South West (AARB). In addition, under ExxonMobil Bright Spots Challenge @ South West, 15,000 students championed anti-littering messages. ExxonMobil had pledged a dollar for every student participating in this Challenge, which goes towards benefitting students from low-income families.

Koh Kock Leong Enterprise Pte Ltd – Meeting Diverse Needs Koh Kock Leong Enterprise Pte Ltd (KKL) has been a strong corporate partner of the South West CDC for the past seven (7) years through three (3) programmes, namely the South West CDC – KKL Meals Bursary, South West Tertiary Grant and Women Enterprise Workz (WEworkz). Their contribution has helped to address diverse needs in the community and uplifted the lives of more than 2,800 needy residents with close to $470,000 worth of aid, from ensuring that the young have a meal to sustain themselves to providing employment opportunities for homemakers.

12

“I am happy that students from lower income families have benefitted from the South West CDC – KKL Meals Busary. I hope for more opportunities to collaborate with South West CDC, to help make a positive impact in the community.” - Mr Koh Thiam Teck, Managing Director, KKL Enterprise Pte Ltd

IMPROVING AND UPLIFTING LIVES

Franklin Offshore International Pte Ltd – Forging Friendships Franklin Offshore International Pte Ltd (Franklin Offshore) has organised and supported programmes which reached out to 2,285 participants. One example is the adoption of 30 disadvantaged families under the Adopt-A-Precinct @ South West programme (AAP), where families are offered holistic assistance in social wellness, healthcare, home safety and improvements, as well as education and enrichment. As part of the programme, Franklin Offshore has befriended families and organised activities such as excursions to Haw Par Villa and reading activities for children from vulnerable families. In September 2014, they contributed $15,000 towards family portrait photography services for 400 vulnerable families, to encourage them and provide a memorable memento. A total of 95 staff have come together to make a difference to the lives of 550 needy residents in the South West District. “It is heart-warming to see the smiles on the children’s faces as they participate in the activities that we have put together for them. We hope to continue to reach out to more families and do our part for the district. This is our little way of giving back to the community” – Mdm Angie Tang, PBM, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) & Director, Franklin Offshore

General Electric – Revitalising Neighbourhoods For over two years, General Electric (GE) has contributed resources as well as volunteers in the South West District. It has supported programmes that benefitted close to 5,500 needy residents in the past year. Over a two-week period in September 2014, 70 GE staff and 50 community volunteers painted murals that depict exercises, healthy diets, social interaction and mental wellness on the walls of void decks, to remind residents the importance of staying socially active and healthy. In addition, they distributed food packs worth $10,000 to 3,468 needy residents. As part of promoting a green environment, GE has also sponsored 5,000 energy-efficient light bulbs for vulnerable households to help them save on their electricity bills.

“By revamping the void decks in Bukit Gombak and promoting a healthy lifestyle among the residents, GE as well as our partners, American Chamber of Commerce and South West CDC, hope to promote more social interactions in the community and improve the well-being of the people in the estate.” - Mr Stuart L. annual report INSPIRING OUR YOUNG ITE College West – Championing Environmental Issues

Nan Hua High School – Service Learning

ITE College West has been a long-time partner of the South West CDC, supporting its programmes for the past 15 years. The institution is dedicated to championing environmental issues and is a corporate citizen constantly engaged in community service and promoting environmental consciousness, for the benefit of staff, students, and the community.

Nan Hua High School has been partnering the South West CDC for the past 17 years. Students from Nan Hua High School are taught to be concerned and active citizens who contribute to society through the School’s Values in Action Programme. This has led the students to organise, support and participate in various programmes organised by the South West CDC. In all, the students volunteered in 32 activities and reached out to over 8,000 residents.

ITE College West participated in 40 activities and reached out to more than 20,000 residents. ECo Day Out @ South West and Green Schools @ South West are among the many environmental activities organised by the South West CDC that they have supported. ITE College West is also a strong supporter of Safe and Bright Homes @ South West, a programme to create safer and more energy-efficient homes for vulnerable elderly. ITE College West also assisted in the collection of 13,610 kg of old newspapers and 1,266 kg of old clothes during the Chua Chu Kang Recycling Day event which raised $3,000 towards the ITE Education Fund.

These activities include Green Schools @ South West, Adopt-A-Rental Block @ South West and helping out with the Lions Befrienders. Through participation in these programmes, students are able to give back to the society. The school has also demonstrated its care and passion towards the community through donations and sponsorships.

Apart from environmental activities, ITE College West has also participated in the Soup for the Soul Project at Fei Yue Senior Activity Centre where 30 staff and students came together to serve cooked food to the needy elderly on a quarterly basis. “I am happy that the skills I have learnt in school can be put to good use by helping the elderly make their homes safer. Spending my weekends going door to door to install safety fixtures and light bulbs for these elderly is a good way for me to give back to the community and help people.”

“I have learnt a lot through participation in the various community service activities and it is a great feeling knowing that I have actually made a difference to the lives of people around me. I will continue to encourage other friends to join me in contributing to the community.” - Nancy Gu, Student, Nan Hua High School

DR AMY KHOR K

NOWN FOR BEING AN ADVOCATE OF HEALTHY LIVING, Dr Amy Khor exercises every morning if her schedule permits. While many people work out to a playlist of pulse-pounding songs, Dr Khor does so without music. Instead, she uses the time to “write” speeches in her head or run through the day’s to-do list. The 57-year-old confesses she enjoys multitasking, and her portfolio certainly reinforces the point: she was re-elected to be the Member of Parliament for Hong Kah North Single Member Constituency in the recent General Election, and holds the position of Senior Minister of State at both the Ministry of Health and Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources. Work aside, the mother of three children aged 26, 25 and 21, shares what else she does during her free pockets of time and talks about the benefits of an active lifestyle. You have such a youthful appearance. What’s your secret? Thank you for the compliment! It helps that I have a small build — the signs of age are less obvious because of that. I don’t really have a secret. Just cleanse, tone and moisturise the skin, plus use a mask once every week. Drink lots of water — it sounds cliché but it really does wonders! Exercise also helps. Besides keeping me in shape, the body produces more endorphins and I feel happier, energised and invigorated. I do this early in the morning so I have a fresh start to the day. Besides exercising, what else do you do to relax and de-stress? It’s fun shopping with my two daughters because we give one another fashion advice. We are also of similar size so they share my clothes sometimes. That makes me happy because it means I get good value out of my buys! I mostly spend time with the family, like going on holiday once a year to recharge, or watching a movie together. I particularly enjoy the Marvel superhero flicks, especially the Iron Man and Captain America series! My other hobbies include reading — though I haven’t had much time to do so of late — and cooking. You have posted several cooking demos and recipes on your Facebook page. What’s your ‘signature’ dish? I don’t cook that often at home now because I don’t have time, but I’d say my best dish is Penang-style curry chicken. I learned how to cook this from my mum. The curry paste is made using her secret blend of spices. My mum, who used to be a school hawker, is the best cook in the family. A woman today has to fulfil so many roles. How do you do it all? Don’t pretend to be a superwoman — it’s just not possible. You only have 24 hours in a day so you have to prioritise. Do the urgent, critical and important, in that order. Then delegate whatever

16

The secret to a youthful appearance and energised body and mind, says Dr Khor, is to eat healthily and exercise regularly.

you can delegate and outsource whatever you can outsource. Family support is also important. For instance, I try to spend time with the kids but honestly it’s not enough. I also need my husband and parents to help take care of the children. Ask yourself what is important to you. Identify what you are passionate about. Ultimately, you must be happy with your decisions and find your own inner peace. Everybody has their own preferences and their own aspirations.

许连碹 博士

Do you think Singaporeans live to work or work to live? It’s hard to generalise, but my observation is that most of us work to live, because increasingly I hear people say, ‘I want work-life balance.’ Sure, there are times we put in long hours to meet deadlines, and we get sucked into the cycle of self-improvement to get ahead, but I see Singaporeans seeking other interests besides work. It’s not that we don’t enjoy our work; it’s about having life outside of it. What are some of the health issues in Singapore you’re most concerned about right now? I would say the lifestyle-related chronic diseases, like diabetes and high blood pressure. Many of these conditions can be prevented or delayed. I strongly believe in exercising regularly, making healthier food choices and going for regular health screening. I practise that, too, and these simple steps can really help you to improve your health and quality of life. You have a very cheerful persona. Where do you get all your positive energy from? I guess part of it must be my DNA. My mum is also a very positive person despite the hardships she

has been through. I guess it rubs off. That aside, I think those in politics need to be able to see things in their proper perspective, and to learn to laugh at ourselves and the world. I believe that in every challenge, there’s something positive. Don’t worry if today has been a lousy day; be positive, tomorrow can only be better. I always take my bearings from the famous words of American sociologist Reinhold Niebuhr: ‘God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.’

HOTSPOTS

in the South West District

Dr Khor enjoys cooking as a hobby.

As Mayor of the South West District from 2004 to 2014 and a fellow resident herself, Dr Khor likes that this part of Singapore is not just all grey industrial areas but boasts a lot of green recreational spaces. Her favourite spots include HortPark, the Jurong Lake district and the Japanese and Chinese Gardens.

“I ALSO REALLY LIKE LIM CHU KANG, where

the farms are. Nearer to Chua Chu Kang are a few vegetable farms that open on weekends to sell their produce. I introduced my mum to the place and she now goes there every weekend to buy vegetables,” shared Dr Khor.

Dr Amy Khor’s 3 TIPS

TO A HAPPIER AND HEALTHIER LIFE

1. Exercise regularly

Find the time that suits you most — morning, night or even during lunchtime — and chances are you’ll keep to it. You need to prioritise and believe that this is important to you.

“And there are still places here that are relatively undiscovered, like the

2. Eat healthily

It’s okay to satisfy your cravings occasionally — for me, it would be durians, char kway teow and laksa. Just remember: eat everything in moderation and do not overindulge.

3. Maintain a positive mindset

My philosophy is to seize the day, live life to the fullest, make it meaningful and be happy with what you do — carpe diem. Give your best in whatever challenges that come your way.

PANG SUA PARK CONNECTOR.

I came up with this idea in my own constituency, where we brought the residents to a park connector to walk 4km once every month. Over a period of about two years, we ‘conquered’ all the park connectors across Singapore!”

in the neighbourhood THE DEFENDING CHAMPION

F

EW WILL FORGET THE MOMENT when Muhammad Nur Alfian B. Juma’en, 19, lifted the national flag after winning Singapore’s only gold medal in silat at the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. With tears streaming down his face, it was clear that the victory was an emotional one. “The win capped off a wonderful year of hard work, training and sacrifices. It was also extra special because I had successfully defended my title at home,” explains the Business Studies student from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, who had also won a gold medal at the 27th SEA Games in 2013. The victory was made sweeter by the fact that he had previously faced his opponent, Tran Dinh Nam from Vietnam, in the quarterfinals of the 16th Silat World Championships in January 2015. Tran had emerged victorious in that match, beating Nur Alfian 3-2. Not one to be discouraged, Nur Alfian studied his opponent’s technique closely and devised a different strategy. His efforts paid off when — despite an injury to his toe midway through the match — he defeated Tran 5-0. Now that the 28th SEA Games are over, Nur Alfian has his eyes set on the 17th Silat World Championships and the 29th SEA Games in 2017. In between training sessions, he enjoys spending time with family and friends in and around his Chua Chu Kang home. He is a familiar face in the neighbourhood, having lived there all his life. “I like it here because there are many sporting facilities nearby, from a park to a street soccer court,” says the fitness enthusiast, who hopes to start a business dealing in sporting goods upon graduation.

where

He is also inspired by the neighbourhood’s community spirit, adding that since the Games, he is recognised a lot more by fellow residents. “They greet me and congratulate me on my performance. It’s a great feeling to know that the community is behind me 100 per cent.”

A WINNING DEBUT It was by fluke that twins Vignesa and Kumaresa Pasupathy, 19, first picked up their floorball sticks nine years ago. “We were studying in Rulang Primary School, which didn’t offer football, a game we were passionate about, as a co-curricular activity. So we decided to try floorball, as it was something unique,” explains Kumaresa, the younger of the two. The duo, both currently students of Anglo-Chinese Junior College, grew to enjoy the fast-paced game and excelled in it, winning a string of national competitions with their school team. They were then selected to join the squad representing Singapore at the 28th SEA Games. This was a historic outing for the Republic’s floorball team, as it was the first time in the Games’ history that Silat champion Nur Alfian is already training hard for the next World Championships and SEA Games.

medals were handed out for the sport. The team’s gruelling training — which began in July 2014 — paid off when they beat Thailand 9-0 in the finals to clinch the gold medal. “The crowd went ecstatic,” recalls Vignesa. “They were really supportive throughout the match, cheering us on enthusiastically.” The Lakeside residents, who were separated by two minutes at birth, have always been drawn towards team sports, and are regulars at The ARK @ Taman Jurong’s football pitches. “Playing in a team is a different feeling altogether. You share the joy, the tears, and the sweat. It’s a lot less lonely,” says Kumaresa, admitting that the duo’s passion for football has not waned over the years. They are now preparing to jump their next hurdle: the upcoming GCE ‘A’ Level examinations in November 2015. “Our family really supported our sporting commitments despite this being an important academic year. It’s now time to focus on our studies,” says Vignesa, who hopes to pursue economics in university. His brother is eager to study physiotherapy, and is considering a career as a Physical Education teacher.
