Layers of thick algae on the Caloosahatchee River this year left local business owners economically devastated and longing for solutions to the ecological threat. That’s important to address for the health of the region as well, according to Dr. James Metcalf, a senior researcher at Brain Chemistry Labs. But the good news is scientists across the world continue to tackle the issue. “Florida isn’t the only place,” he
said. “This isn’t something that just happened in the last few years.” Metcalf came to Fort Myers as the keynote speaker for the 28th Annual Southwest Florida Water Resources Conference. After a summer in Lee County that started with reports of blue-green algae in the rivers and ended with red tide blooms on the beaches, the event drew special attention. The researcher brought expertise developed by studying cyanobacteria for nearly two decades. Metcalf has worked at the Institute for Ethnomedicine in Wyoming since 2013.
He said there have been documented concerns about blue-green algal blooms killing livestock and animal habitats since the 19th century. He said significant concerns in populations with extended exposure do arise. But scientists have spent more than a century studying the properties of the algae. In Guam, some human populations have dealt with the extended presence of blue-green algae for decades. Metcalf said there’s evidence the beta-methylamino-L-alanine toxins, known as BMAA, raises the chance of

Hospitality first step in placemaking choices Special to SWFBT Submitted by Karen P. Create a place where people want to live, then you’ve created a place where people want to work. Create a place where people want to work, then you’ve created a place where business has to be. And if you create a place where business has to be, then you’re a place where people have to visit. Hurricane Irma created a sharp demand for commercial roofers in Southwest Florida. Our telephones were ringing off the hook and our email inbox was flooded with inquiries for months. To handle the workload, we invested in new equipment and hired dozens of additional employees. However, there’s always an inherent danger with hiring sprees caused by natural disasters—what happens when the workload slows down? Here we are now, 18 months later, and we have an answer: it hasn’t slowed down. We’ve long since finished Irma repairs on schools, condominium buildings and businesses, yet we continue to hire additional roofers, project managers, superintendents and office staff because the phone keeps ringing and emails keep coming. In 2018, Target Roofing tripled its sales revenue compared to 2015. We surpassed 200 full-time employees. We completed approximately 10 million square feet of roofing projects, the equivalent of 174 football fields worth of roofing. If you Google “commercial roofing companies in Fort Myers,” page after page of businesses will appear. So how does Target Roofing continue gaining market share in Southwest Florida? Roofing is an industry where reputation drives success, and our goal at the end of
every project is a happy client. Our model of success is driven by four customer-focused factors: Communication: Clients are always in the know through digital access to BY CASEY project updates, CROWTHER timelines, photos Guest Columnist and job notes. Each customer is given a Target Roofing point of contact to reach whenever questions arise. Accountable: We hold ourselves to the highest industry standards and do not take shortcuts. Every job is completed by full-time employees of Target Roofing to ensure quality and reliability. Ethical: We provide free estimates and encourage prospective clients to secure second opinions. Trust is critical, and we deliver exactly what we promise. Responsive: Customers can expect prompt replies to their voicemails and emails, and we understand immediacy of the situation. Nonprofit gets books in children’s hands Books for Collier Kids, which launched in 2005 as First Book-Collier County, is a nonprofit to watch because this all-volunteer organization has distributed more than 1 million new, age-appropriate books to children living in poverty in Collier County… books for them to read and start a personal library in their own homes. Research continually shows that books in the home are vital to a child’s ability to read and learn, and supports success in school and life. A lack of basic literacy skills is linked with academic failure, delinquency, teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, unemployment, low productivity and welfare dependency. Twenty-one of Collier County’s 30 elementary schools are Title I schools where a majority of students are from low-income families and where at least 75 percent of students are enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program. To address these concerns locally, volunteer, earlychildhood experts select top-quality, age-appropriate books that are purchased in bulk at heavily discounted prices through The First Book Marketplace. The books
support the curriculum in more than 380 classrooms in Collier County, providing books to every Title I school grades kindergarten, first and second, Head Start pre-K and VPK program in the county. The nonprofit partners with more than 20 local organizations to get Books for Collier Kids into the hands of children, including: Fun Time Early Childhood Academy, Collier County Public Schools, Early Literacy and Learning Model, Friends of Foster Children Forever, Grace Place for Children & Families, Guadalupe Center for Immokalee, Habitat For Humanity-Collier, Immokalee Housing & Family Services, NCH Healthcare System and Youth Haven. Unlocking the key to sound security
Key Powell moved to Naples in 1980 with his parents when his father started Certified Safe near 5th Avenue. With a name like Key, you might expect he’d become a locksmith like his father, but he worked in real estate and property management until he got the entrepreneurial itch. Naturally, he started Key Locksmith Services with one truck and an earpiece, taking calls and doing jobs. Like many locksmiths, he saw that security was going electronic and moved into integration, adding surveillance cameras and access control to his repertoire. He took a DBA as Key Security Services installing and servicing a variety of security systems including gate controllers, alarms and controllers for commercial sliding doors in addition to locksmithing. That initial investment for a truck and tools has turned into a thriving business with profit margins exceeding industry averages. It didn’t happen overnight. He started working one day a week along with a night job on the weekends until his ad hit the phone book and the work started coming in. By the end of his first year he hired his first employee, Jon Chavers, who is still his Senior Locksmith. Slowly, he added positions and trucks until 10 years later, Key Security Services has eight full-time employees, six work trucks and owns a commercial office. Powell continues to oversee the installation and service of security systems for community associations and businesses, but his real passion is teaching property managers to effectively balance the security of their property with the convenience that owners desire. He likes to remind his employees, “We are not just technicians, we are problem solvers.” That is the key to his success. He looks for ways to exceed each customer’s expectations by solving their problem instead of just completing the job. City of Fort Myers has eye on the future Special to SWFBT Submitted by Karen P. Moore, Publisher
With all the downtown Fort Myers development underway, where else can city leaders think it can expand? With affordable housing a big concern for the future of the entire region, the City of Fort Myers is moving full speed ahead with its Midtown project. According to Steve Belden, Fort Myers community development director, “This plan provides a framework for developing land adjacent to downtown, allowing for infrastructure upgrades along with future residential and commercial uses.” The Midtown Development Vision Plan document indicates “Midtown has languished since the last Spring Training games were held at the baseball stadi-
um in 2010. Before this, the area’s residential population had already been in decline since the early 1990s.” Belden notes, “The goal of the plan is to extend Midtown into downtown.” When public input was sought earlier in order to create the plan, results included the community’s desire for 1) walkability, 2) more affordable housing opportunities and 3) Midtown to complement historic downtown Fort Myers. Belden indicated public input was crucial to the development of the plan. “This Vision Plan reflects a 15- to 20-year projected buildout,” states Belden. The infrastructure work will commence this year, starting with water, streetscape and landscape efforts. The creation of the town center, says Belden, will serve as the catalyst for the entire project, potentially
Wright completes Collier Recycling Center Wright Construction Group completed construction of the Northeast Recycle Drop-Off Center in Collier County. On 39th Avenue Northeast in Naples, the facility is the fifth local recycling center and the largest that the county has constructed. Built on a 14-acre site, the 31,107-square-foot state-of-the-art facility features truck scales and special containment rooms for compliant handling of hazardous waste, blast-resistant doors and high strength industrial coatings throughout. Designed with modern architectural styling, long span steel beams were incorporated to accommodate the open air structure. including 1500 residential units; 3.75 acres of public green space; 500,000 square feet of commercial, with 200,000 square feet dedicated to ground floor commercial. The town center is owned jointly by the City and Lee County, located on 28 acres around the old stadium that will no longer exist, and intended to spur growth throughout Midtown, according to Belden. The planned open space is called Midtown Square Park and, says Belden, includes an activity center, and maybe an amphitheater, along with mixed use commercial/residential units at street level. Regarding affordable housing pricing, “The objective of the plan,” says Belden, “is for the market to dictate the pricing on affordable housing. We are not going to set limits if at all possible.”

Do what you do best by forming an executive team
I am a huge proponent of always trying to “do what you do best” when it comes to initiating and executing on a business decision, project, expansion or sale of a business. I also encourage business owners to constantly evolve and learn new things, which really pertains to vertical integration of their business and keeping up to speed with their industry. Today, I want to discuss the importance of forming a team of experts to guide you through the purchase of commercial real estate for your business, expanding your business, buying a business or selling your business. Assuming you don’t have partners or a management team that you rely on to make major business decisions, the first and most important part of your team should be your spouse and family. Without their support and input, you run the risk of adversely effecting them both in the long and short term and creating animosity within the family. Happy spouse, happy house! The second most important part of your team is actually two people: your CPA and your attorney. These are the people that are going to protect you from yourself and from all the third parties that will be involved in the transaction you are considering. This will ensure no stone gets unturned during the process. The third most important part of your team, again, is two people, and that is your banker (or SBA lender) and your real estate/business/equipment sales agent. These two people should be working in tandem to help fit you with the right asset and pre-qualify you for financing so you have the best tools to negotiate with. I have found it very important, especially in business acquisitions, to have your own broker representation, not a transaction broker that handles both the buyer and the seller. The final group that should be
part of your team is your vendor, insurance agents, appraiser, inspector, etc. These are the folks that will help ensure the asset you are buying is appropriate for what you are trying BY TOM to accomplish, is in MAIALE good condition, and Guest Columnist to properly protect after the transaction is complete. Forming the team is only half the battle. There are two more critical success factors to this process. The first is, try to introduce most or all of these team members early in the process. This will ensure there is no confusion later in the process and also allow for an efficient process creating a pleasurable experience for all involved. The second is, choose people that you trust and LET THEM DO THEIR JOBS! Too often, micromanagement leads to bottlenecks or even causes a deal to die. Plus, this will allow you to “Do what You Do Best” and continue focusing 100 percent of your attention on running your business and making money. I pride myself on knowing some of the best CPAs, attorneys, brokers and insurance agents in the Southwest Florida market. So, give me a shout so we can discuss you transaction and I can help you form an all-star team to give you the best chance of success. With clothing, accessories, shoes, room décor and blankets for newborns to tweens, the is open Monday through Saturday. Eden’s Closet is inspired by the owner’s daughter and produces collections internally, as well as via a manufacturer in Montreal. These include exclusive designs and prints. For example, the ready-to-wear collection features glitter-filled tulle dresses with delicate bows and floral embroidery for girls and eccentric jackets and elegant shirts for boys, along with trendy shoes for both genders. With comfort, functionality and fashion in mind, the majority of fabrics utilized by Eden’s Closet are cotton. All collections are designed to mix and match with an everyday wardrobe, as well as special-occasion styles. These include holidays and celebrations like a baby’s homecoming. Now, the business owner’s goal is to develop collections of matching ‘mom and me’ and ‘dad and me’ outfits, in collaboration with her fashion designer mother’s brand Lace, another store in the Promenade. “When I was a little girl, my mother designed and coordinated matching outfits for us. I would like to continue that tradition, as it is so adorable and fun,” said owner Netta Perez. “Regardless of the collection, though, everything is original and made with the greatest care. Not only does Eden’s Closet set out to provide children’s outfits that you cannot find elsewhere, it places great emphasis on the experience of gift giving — from in-store selection to unboxing a most treasured item.” To further capitalize on memorable gift giv-

SRMA keeps manufacturer needs in mind Southwest Florida hasn’t been thought of as a manufacturing hub, but the Southwest Regional Manufacturers Association is making a concerted effort to change that. Armed with a dynamic new board, new logo, growing membership and a robust calendar of events that includes socials, educational roundtables and plant tours, the SRMA is putting local manufacturers first. Already this year, the SRMA brought manufacturers together for a roundtable discussion with International Trade Specialist Kevin Brady about tariffs, market volatility and other importing and exporting issues. A February roundtable featured a panel of hiring experts to help manufacturers deal with a difficult labor market. A week later, the SRMA linked manufacturers with a ready pool of applicants at twin job fairs in Fort Myers and Naples. Another roundtable on intellectual property and a networking social are planned for March.
The activity reflects the region’s manufacturing growth. The industry added about 500 jobs in the Fort Myers area over the past year and another 400 around Naples. The SRMA is actively working to sustain that growth. Members receive a litany of benefits, including valuable information on reduced tax rates on new maBY NEIL chinery, compliance training, KAGAN marketing assistance and promoGuest Columnist tions, access to seminars on best practices and award recognitions. The SRMA recognizes outstanding manufacturers with its annual manufacturer awards luncheon, and the organization coordinates activities for Manufacturing Day, a national celebration meant to inspire the next generation of manufacturers.
Get that cash and reinvest now A rate is a relative term. Its significance depends on its comparison. Based on my years of experience, now is a great time to take advantage of current mortgage rates for real estate purchases or refinances. Many economists share the view that a recession is not likely to happen in the near future based on the strength of the aggregated economic data. However, these same economists seem to agree on rising interest rates. These comments paint a picture for us: take advantage of the low interest rates today and ride along…get that cash now to reinvest. Whether you are a new or experienced real estate investor, if you acquired a Florida property in the past five years, chances are your property has gained sufficient equity to be able to convert it into cash. This liquidity, if you have it in your hands, other than opening other doors for you, gives you additional investment opportunity: • It gives you the opportunity to show your talent again by identifying that other great investment property. • It gives you the chance to diversify. Since the markets never continue to go up and up, now is your chance to look for a safer type of property or maybe a business opportunity. • It gives you the chance to return the favor to friends and family who trusted you on that first venture albeit higher rates. Now you can take a lower rate mortgage and replenish the well. These trusting first funders will then want to repeat the experience with you. • It gives you the real living proof of your wellapplied talent, knowledge and courage. In order to help you with this task, you need to

rently in the pipeline primarily for inland development, including Two Woodspring Suites.” All of these developments, he stated, provide more new local jobs. As for local attraction developments, Wert indicated, the Naples Princess cruise ship is now back in the water after a $1-million renovation and the new Paradise Coast Sportsplex is well underway. Wellness tourism is also now a part of Collier County’s hospitality industry vernacular with wellness events planned all over the county throughout the year. Despite the red tide and blue-green algae infestation last year, Wert shared, “Collier County saw record tourist development tax collections, which allows our region to maintain our beaches and museums, as well as funding the county’s marketing efforts.” Moreover, he pointed out, visitor spending was up 5 percent year-over-year, which was no small feat, considering the challenging environmental conditions the region faced last year. Wert is looking forward to a good season this year, due to both the county’s marketing efforts as well as the deep-freeze temperatures to the north. “Short-term vacation rentals are full and we’re at 70- to 80-percent occupancy at our hotels. So all looks good.”
While Southwest Florida led Florida out of the recession beginning in 2011, Wert notes, Collier County roared out of the recession and has experienced explosive growth. “For the past three years, Forbes has ranked Naples No. 1 in the country for job growth,” he notes, “but we will not become another Miami.” The role of the CVB has also changed over the past several years. Pre-Hurricane Irma, he shared, visitors often returned the next year or the year after that. “Those days are gone. We now have to constantly remind people who we are in Collier County and all we have to offer our visitors. “Tourism is certainly part of economic development in Collier County—and it is growing.” In fact, he pointed out, visitor spending saved residents $1,000 in taxes last year and provided 38,500 jobs in the hospitality and tourism fields, while supporting the quality of life. He added, “There is also a lot of interest for new hotel properties, ranging from a $320-million investment in the high-end JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort to a $3-million investment in the Naples Grand Beach Resort to the nine new hotels cur-

COMPANIES TO WATCH Sparking new era for big events A new era is dawning for a 45-yearold Southwest Florida business that is the largest of its kind in the region. Al Mueller, new owner of Creative Events & Rentals, has been investing money, time and energy into the company since buying it in May 2017. With his second season getting underway, he’s ready to show off a fresh approach. “I wanted to sit tight the first year and observe how everything ran,” said Mueller, a Chicago native who has lived in Southwest Florida since 1988. “I didn’t want to make any big moves. Now, it’s gloves off—let’s go!” Creative Events & Rentals now features cutting-edge equipment designed to make any event a rousing success. The company provides equipment and offers on-site event management for black-tie galas, fundraisers, weddings, country club events and a variety of other gatherings. Mueller and his team have 60-footwide, 80-foot-wide and 100-foot-wide tents for large gatherings, along with plenty of smaller tents. Clearspan, structure, art deco and a host of other tent styles are among the 750,000 square feet of tent space at Creative’s disposal. The company has a litany of other rental items, from chairs and china to bounce houses, lighting, tables and more, all geared toward helping clients plan and produce events that exceed expectations. Mueller credits his staff, which has decades of experience producing events
in Southwest Florida, for their reliable, personalized service. Before he bought the business, Mueller had been a client since 2005, renting tents from Creative Events & Rentals for his fireworks business. Mueller “I knew for years that Creative stood for quality in Southwest Florida,” Mueller said. “What I didn’t realize until I became a part of this is just how dedicated the people behind this company are. It takes a team, and this team is the best.” Mueller’s team came through for him this past March, when they provided onsite event management for 21 different events in a single weekend. Mueller is eager for more weekends like that, but for him, quality will always win out over quantity. “Every gathering is as important to us as it is to the people who are putting it on,” Mueller said. “That shows in the level of service we give our clients at every turn. We take care of the details so you can enjoy your event worry-free.” Creative Events & Rentals was founded in 1973 and is Southwest Florida’s largest event planning and production business. Culinary Connection Day to connect chefs, farms, public By Aisling Swift The Florida Culinary Accelerator @ Immokalee will celebrate its third annual Immokalee Culinary Connection Day this month, with celebrity chef cooking challenges, samples, tours and raffles, followed by an evening after-party with live music, food and prizes at Celebration Park Naples. The first event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 27, at the culinary accelerator, on Airpark Boulevard at Immokalee Regional Airport. The afterparty, which will feature culinary accelerator vendors selling their products, as well as food trucks, fundraisers and other festivities, will be held from 4-10 p.m. at Celebration food truck park, 2880 Becca Ave., Naples, in Bayshore. Ahmed El, the accelerator’s culinary program manager, likens Immokalee Culinary Connection Day to an open house. “We’re inviting everyone to come to the accelerator, meet our local chefs and food businesses, watch us operate and see what’s happening here,” El said. “We want them to truly immerse themselves. The goal of the event is to create awareness and support, while helping connect Immokalee’s farming community, Southwest Florida residents and businesses with aspiring culinary entrepreneurs in every stage of their businesses.” Two local celebrity chefs, Crave Culinaire’s Brian Roland and Amber Phillips, who operates Sage Events & Catering, will partner with an accelerator chef to take on the challenge

One or two more celebrity chefs will be announced, El said. “The afterparty is an opportunity to mingle with accelerator members in a more casual environment, try great food from the food trucks onsite and network with leaders in the business community,” he added. In addition to El, Ruth Fehr is the business development manager and Matt Krug, a University of Florida food scientist, heads UF Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences’ Food Testing Laboratory at the accelerator. Together, they offer over 50 years of food, nutrition, catering and restaurant experience. Entrepreneurs also can work with Naples SCORE and the Small Business Development Cen-
ter at FGCU, both of which help with business plans, marketing and can provide access to investors. Members have the opportunity to sell their products at a retail outlet, Woodstock’s market, which is beneath the Naples Accelerator on Kraft Road. To sell products there, two chefs are now working on their labels, some of which must be approved by the Food and Drug Administration. So far, Judy’s Pastry & Bakery is the first graduate and opened an East Naples bakery, which celebrated its grand opening on Feb. 14. Carina’s Caribbean hot sauce, salsas, hummus and other products are being sold under the Wynn’s label, and the hot sauce is selling under the Vega label on Amazon and in the Chicago area. Other chef entrepreneurs are operating food
trucks, catering and baking businesses, a distillery, healthy meal plan services and other food startups. A Texas non-profit, Brighter Bites, which also operates in Washington, D.C., and New York, chose the accelerator to launch its South Florida operations, where it teaches children and parents about healthy eating. It provides educational services and healthy food to five schools in Naples and Immokalee, as well as handing out healthy bags of produce to families every week. “The county’s accelerator program was created to diversify our economy and, so far, it’s helped 27 food startups, chefs and small businesses from Immokalee, Collier County, the Southwest Florida Promise Zone and Southwest Florida,” said Jace Kentner, director of the Collier County Office of Business & Economic Development. “Immokalee Culinary Connection Day plays a significant role in connecting and supporting our Southwest Florida communities, the Promise Zone, consumers, and our culinary entrepreneurs.” The Southwest Florida Promise Zone is one of 22 federally designated low-income zones nationwide, one of only four rural Promise Zones and is Florida’s only Promise Zone. Future phases of the accelerator program will transform other airport parcels into buildings to house graduates’ businesses and food-related businesses that will be part of the Southwest Florida Culinary Arts & Production Campus.

Spring training scores big impact in Lee Spring training has a substantial impact on the Lee County economy, but it also draws fans who might not otherwise visit, who spend outside the ballparks and who plan return trips largely due to baseball. The 2019 Major League Baseball spring training season is approaching for the two teams Lee County hosts – the Boston Red Sox at JetBlue Park and the Minnesota Twins at CenturyLink Sports Complex. In order to understand how hosting these teams benefits Lee County’s economy, the Lee County Sports Development office contracted for survey-based research of spring training attendees during the 2018 season.
Among the findings: • Spring Training attendees spent $68.9 million while visiting; $56.7 million of that was spent outside the ballpark. • 41 percent of Spring Training attendees only visit Lee County during spring training. • 50 percent of attendees say that Spring Training is the primary reason for their visit to the area. • On average, attendees stay in the area for five nights, and 71 percent stay in paid accommodations. • 63 percent of visitors say they intend to return for spring training the next year.
ALGAE PAGE 1 individuals suffering certain illnesses. For example, a quarter of those who die in Guam each year suffer some form of ALS. In the United States, two in 100,000 people suffer from ALS. Studies of brain tissue found presence of BMAA in those individuals’ brains. Research today suggests if you live with a mile and a half of a lake with a cyanobacteria bloom, you ultimately have a 25 times greater risk of developing ALS. He noted, though, that’s looking at populations exposed over a period of 40 to 70 years. So what can be done? Metcalf described cyanobacteria as a “global problem.” Efforts to control climate change will help, he said, as the bacteria thrive in warmer waters. He also said the key may be addressing dosages. Like any toxin, the dangers from BMAA exposure differ based on concentration. “If we can reduce the size of the bacteria, we can possibly reduce the toxic effects on us from long-term exposure,” he said. “And there are certainly ways to go about that.” Watershed studies

Improvements to water management infrastructure can control and disperse algae. Beating the threat requires long-term approaches, he said, and the best thing may be teaching future generations to pay attention to the problem. “If you watch them while they are young, you can teach them to be better stewards of the water supply.”
