From style-savvy ways to use up leftover paints (p76), to how to create a luxe outdoor living space for less (p84), as well as all of the clever ideas from our real homeowners and renters, this issue is bursting with money-saving know-how! For quick and easy updates for every room, check out 50 thrifty updates for under £30 on page 72 – it’s got lots of fab finds for the last days of summer. Then, don’t miss our upcycling challenge on page 110 – you can turn a small piece of scrap wood into a cool hallway shelf that’s convenient for keeping keys and other essentials. As usual, our real homes are packed with tips and tricks you can steal. My fave belongs to interior stylist Charlotte Jacklin, who’s turned her rented three-bed into a family home that’s full of cottagecore charm, without splashing the cash. Find out how she did it on page 22. And while we are on the topic of amazing makeovers, you’ve got to take a look at Aurélien Farjon’s garden transformation on page 92. He’s turned a bare plot into a lush outdoor lounge, that’s just as well designed for parties, as it is for yoga! For those of us without gardens, we know that this can be an envy-inducing time of year. But fear not, as we have all the expert advice you need to become a proud houseplant-parent on page 84 – your urban jungle will be swoon-worthy!

‘Our Wren designer created a dream kitchen that gives us a pinch-me moment every day’ Wren’s exquisite range of kitchens and its designer’s creative vision provided Katie and Kalen with a beautiful room that they can’t quite believe is theirs… Bold choices: Katie had always dreamed of a black kitchen with walnut worktops
W
hen Katie Wood and her boyfriend Kalen found their new home in 2021, they fell in love with it, even though the house hadn’t been updated since the 1980s. So the couple geared themselves up for a full renovation, paying particular attention to the kitchen-diner which, says Katie, ‘was very old and desperately needed some life injecting into it’. Despite having never done a renovation before, Katie immediately saw how to transform the tired room into a more vibrant space. Her solution was to remove a wall to create a brighter, more welcoming room to entertain and relax in.
Katie and Kalen wanted a kitchen that was functional and stylish, but conducive to creating a relaxed atmosphere. ‘I’ve always felt that the kitchen is the heart of the home,’ explains Katie, ‘so it was really important for me to get it right.’ They needed help envisioning it, though, so Katie sought out the guidance of a designer to help them choose a style and colours, as well as ensure that their ideas were realistic. The quality of the units was another important factor for Katie and Kalen and they found what they were looking for with Wren. The couple also felt they were

supporting a local business as ‘we live quite near where it all started for Wren, in Barton, North Lincolnshire’, says Katie.
SATISFACTION GUARANTEED Wren designer James got to work bringing Katie and Kalen’s vision to life, and they were delighted with his help. ‘James kept in touch throughout the process and sent over the 3D render for us after the initial design appointment,’ Katie recalls. To visualise their kitchen the couple used Wren’s VR experience during their first visit to the Wren showroom. ‘To see your design go from a drawing on a computer screen to something you can walk around with

cupboard doors you can open was a truly amazing experience,’ says Katie. ‘It really allowed us to get a feel for how the kitchen was going to look in our home, as well as how functional it would be!’ Katie had always had her heart set on a black kitchen with walnut worktops and she found exactly what she was looking for with Wren’s Infinity Plus Shaker Raven Matt kitchen. ‘I had never seen one like this before,’ she reveals, ‘but I knew it was something I wanted as it would help me create an industrial look that I could extend into the rest of the home.’ Despite some doubts from friends and family regarding Katie’s decision to opt for such a dark kitchen, Wren designer James,
shared her vision. ‘James worked very closely with us to bring our ideas to life on his computer, which was surreal as it was exactly what I had imagined. He also used any spare gaps and spaces to slot in more units to maximise on storage.’ The couple’s friends and family may have needed a little convincing regarding the black and walnut design for the kitchen, but Katie and Kalen never had any doubts and they absolutely love it. ‘It has been installed for over six months now and I still stand back and admire it. Sometimes I almost have to pinch myself, as I just cannot believe how my original visions have been brought to life so brilliantly! We also have plenty of cupboard
space and it works well for us, especially the matching utility units.’ ‘My favourite feature has to be the breakfast bar,’ continues Katie. ‘With the Shaker-style frontals and décor panels, it really draws attention, and with the rustic-style bar stools it really is the heart of our home.’ The couple’s new kitchen has become the focal point for a lot of their socialising too. It’s a stylish space where guests can come and join Katie and Kalen – along with their latest addition: rescue puppy, Rae – for evening drinks. ‘The space can be transformed from day to night by using the white spotlights hanging over the bar,’ explains Katie. ‘They’re practical as task lighting for cooking, but the warm bulbs also help to create an extremely cosy vibe and the perfect atmosphere for entertaining, hosting date nights and unwinding at the end of the day. The kitchen means everything to us,’ she continues, ‘and it is the room in the house that we’re most proud of. We couldn’t be happier!’

PR OBL EM S OLVE D
Hot and sticky summer nights are the enemy of sleep, but comfortable bedding can make all the difference when it comes to drifting off with ease. Choose natural fibres, like this cotton-and-linen mix from the Secret Linen Store, which helps you to keep your cool and be ready to take on the world in the morning. Linen fabrics look best when they’re left to elegantly crumple, so you won’t have to get steamy while doing the ironing either.

Ric rac is back! Scallops, wiggles and wobbles have taken over the world of interiors! Playful elements add an irresistible touch of jollity to your schemes and show that you’re not taking life too seriously. It’s really simple to add these cutting-edge looks to your textiles using a surprisingly old-school haberdashery favourite: ric rac. Available in a huge range of colours and sizes, ric rac can be sewn straight onto table linens and curtains or placed into the seams of cushions that you’re stitching up yourself. This will create a super-cute scallop effect in a flash. Head to John Lewis & Partners for more inspiration; there’s a haberdashery department to explore too!

Take things a step further by potato printing simple designs on the fabric using acrylic paint or try funky florals for a retro effect.

‘As a renter, I like to spend my money on things we’ll take with us if we move, like beautiful cushions. I got this Palmeral design in the House of Hackney sample sale, the striped cushion is from John Lewis & Partners, while the floral embroidered one is from Projektityyny, one of my favourite shops for home accessories. MY STORY
We were living in a two-bed flat in Margate, but decided to move back to Lincolnshire, where I’m originally from, to be closer to family. Lincolnshire has great access to London, where I need to visit for work. It’s also surrounded by countryside, which has been so good for my creativity. I spent hours looking on Rightmove for a house to rent in the area and when I saw this place, I was drawn to the wooden floors. When we went to see the house, it was better than the photos. It was really important that we found somewhere we could put our own stamp on. The landlord wanted someone who would be here a while and who would make it a home; luckily, they were open to our DIY ideas.
We knew that we were going to be here long-term, so we have been very happy to put time and effort into making it the kind of house that we want to live in. Often with rented accommodation, it can be a challenge to find low-cost ideas to transform the interior, but we’ve had plenty of DIY practice over the four years that we’ve lived here. We’re proud of the unique solutions we’ve come up with, including upcycling second-hand furniture and adding free-standing temporary features that we can take with us. One day, we’d love to build our own house, but I think we’re a long way off that yet. For now, we’re very happy continuing to make this rented house feel like home.

Welcome TO MY HOME A BIT ABOUT ME I’m Charlotte Jacklin, a content creator and stylist. I live with my husband, Jack, daughter, June, aged five, and our cockapoo, Ace. You can see more on my Instagram @charlottejacklin. WHERE I LIVE We live in a rented three-bedroom house in Lincolnshire and have been here for the past four years. WHAT I WANTED TO CHANGE The house was a bit of a blank canvas. I wanted to decorate with florals and vintage-inspired décor to reflect my personal style and put my own individual stamp on the place. HOW I MADE IT MY OWN We gave the kitchen a mini makeover, added lots of pretty wallpaper, painted some of the existing furniture and added a gorgeous fireplace surround in the living room.

MY FAVOURITE PART The downstairs with the pinks, greens, florals and natural finishes. Every room is different, but they all add to the calm feel and I love that the décor has a cohesive look.

‘Our biggest splurge is the corner Patterdale sofa from DFS. Part of me wishes we had the pink one, but as a compromise we went for the green and I think with a small child in the house, it was probably a sensible decision. It’s so comfy; we’re really happy with it. My favourite thing in this room is the DIY feature fireplace, which I made out of MDF with my dad’s help. After we had tiled and grouted the MDF sheets, we attached it to the fireplace with No More Nails and a few screws, before attaching the whole thing to the wall with fireplace fixings. We made it so it can be easily removed, if and when we choose to leave the house. I painted the fire surround pink and added DIY painted stripes on the wall behind to bring the whole look together.’
HOW TO...
Paint DIY stripes Make a wall stand out with this simple but stylish painting technique Ensure the wall is clean by wiping it down with a sugar soap solution and a sponge. Wait for it to dry before painting. Measure the width of the space you want to paint. This needs to be divided by how thick you would like the stripes. Charlotte’s stripes are 10cm wide, but you might decide to go thicker or thinner, depending on the style you want.
‘We adapted my nephew’s old changing station into this storage cupboard in the corner. It’s 18 years old and is in great condition. I bought the jute rug from Etsy. I do my workouts on top of it with a yoga mat and June and the dog run around after each other on it every day. It gets a lot of traffic and it’s held up well. The coffee table is from MADE.com and the floral chair is from a local charity shop’ ‘This Liberty Matilda Goad lampshade was a limited edition. It was an investment, but it’s a timeless classic and I really love it’ 24 yourhomestyle.uk
Use a laser level to get straight lines and lightly mark with a pencil, before applying frog tape over the lines. This is a bit time-consuming, but it will ensure that you get neat, crisp stripes. Before applying colour, paint the edges of the stripes with the base colour – in Charlotte’s case, this was white. If you’re going for two alternate colours, like Charlotte, mark which colour each stripe is meant to be with a blob of paint. Using a small roller, apply two-to-three thin coats of the stripe colour to the wall. When you’ve applied your final coat, remove the frog tape before it’s fully dry.
‘We’ve put time and effort into making it the kind of house we want to live in’
Dining room ‘This is the first house we’ve lived in where we have been able to have a proper dining table, so I wanted it to be the main feature of the room. We made the table ourselves using hairpin legs and a sheet of plywood. It was an affordable way of getting a table this size. I’ve always wanted to have one room that was fully wallpapered, and I think this Dahlia Garden design from Boråstapeter works for both the summer and winter. We eat all our meals in here and do lots of different crafts on the table with June. It’s definitely the hub of our home.’
OLD ROMANTIC p30
Charlotte loves second-hand homeware pieces and she found these bistro chairs for a bargain price on Facebook Marketplace. The lampshade is from IKEA and the scalloped rug is from Habitat
‘The landlord wanted someone who would make it a home and luckily were open to our DIY ideas’
‘We painted the kitchen cabinets in Valspar Rugged Olive. We went for a satin finish and a year after painting them, I’m really happy with how they’ve worn’
Style idea Customise plain shelves by attaching a pretty scallop trim
‘My favourite thing in the kitchen is the Sanderson Chelsea French Rose wallpaper from Wallpaper Direct,’ says Charlotte. ‘It was a press sample, but we only needed two rolls to cover the areas we wanted, and I think it still makes a really big impact. We painted over the tiles in Puppy Paws by Valspar – have you ever heard of a cuter name for paint?’

Kitchen
‘We’re lucky that my dad is very handy, with a background in kitchen fitting so we knew that, with his help, we could change up the kitchen for under £1,000. We kept the cabinet carcasses, but got new madeto-order MDF cupboard doors. We added handles that had been lying around in my dad’s garage for years. They weren’t my first choice, but compromises have to be made when you’re on a budget and they actually go really well with the floor. The biggest task and expense was changing the worktops, but I’m happy with this marble-effect laminate design from the GoodHome range at B&Q.’
‘For now, we’re happy continuing to make this rented house feel like home’ As something the family can take with them when they leave their rental home, Charlotte thought it was worth splashing out on a Swan fridge-freezer. ‘The freezer used to be at the end of the kitchen, but when we moved it, we thought it would be the perfect place to put a bed for Ace’ August 2022 27
The Harlequin patchwork quilt from Projektityyny and matching cushions add a splash of colour to the bed
Master bedroom
‘We inherited the wardrobes when we moved in and were lucky that our landlord agreed to let us paint them in Marsh Green by Valspar. We also replaced the handles with these brushed gold designs from B&Q, which elevates the whole look. The headboard is also a DIY project. We made it from MDF and foam and covered it with a pom pom curtain from Homesense. The final thing we’d like to do in this room is paint the walls a different colour, maybe a plaster pink. I quite like Ferdinand from Little Greene.’
‘This slogan sticker was a gift from my friend, influencer Liv Purvis. It’s a nice reminder when you’re feeling anxious or unsure so I stuck it onto the mirror, from MADE.com’
‘The dressing table is from Next, but I completely sanded it down, added new handles from B&Q and painted it in the colour that was left over from the kitchen. I used offcuts of Liberty wallpaper that my friend sent to me; we only needed a small amount’
‘We’ve had plenty of DIY practice over the years and we’re proud of the unique solutions we’ve come up with’
Bathroom
‘The bathroom was one of the main reasons we wanted to rent this house – we didn’t see many rentals with neutral bathroom tiles. We’ve updated the space with new accessories, like this bath mat from Homesense, towels from Dunelm and houseplants from Patch Plants. I also cut down on all the plastic containers for a set of glass bottles that we can refill. The biggest change we made was swapping out the plastic bath surround with a wooden one, which my husband made himself.’
Inspiring homes Wall-mounted shelves keep June’s books within easy reach for bedtime stories. Charlotte has filled the walls with artwork, including the linen banner by Secret Holiday Co on Etsy
June s bedroom
‘This room never stays the same for long. It’s always being adapted to suit June’s ever-changing needs and tastes as she grows up. We sometimes use the space as a guest room when friends and family visit, so it was important that we chose a bed that could be pulled out and made bigger for these occasions. This IKEA Hemnes day bed is perfect. I love the Sanderson floral curtains that I found secondhand on eBay – they go really nicely with the Kip&Co bedspread.’
Neutral walls let June’s accessories and toys shine. The personalised cushion is by 16ths Child on Not On The High Street and the peach print is by Annie Dornan Smith
One of Charlotte’s favourite ways to unwind is with a bath, so it was important this space was somewhere she enjoyed spending time. By updating bathroom essentials with on-trend buys, Charlotte has given the space a quick and budget-friendly glow up. Just like the rest of her home, she’s managed to squeeze in some pink, with the pale blush shower curtain and a wall painted in the shade, Honu Lulu by Colour Courage
WHAT I LEARNED... When decorating, it’s best to take your time. Think about how a space will work best for you and your family before jumping straight in. Rushing into decorating means you’ll probably want to change it further down the line. Get to know what you like rather than what’s on trend right now. You can admire something without necessarily wanting it in your home. If you don’t know where to start, moodboards are your best friend. I copy and paste images onto a PowerPoint, but you could just tear images from magazines and stick them together.

‘I felt that we needed more colour in the kitchen, so we went for these Moroccan-style floor tiles. I made the mistake of choosing a random mix as it was cheaper, but later came to hate some of the colours. Poor Paddy had the job of lifting half of them and replacing them with my preferred selection of yellows and pinks. It was a messy job, but it lifts my mood so much more looking at the brighter hues’
Our home is full of ROMANTIC DETAILS Claire Brown’s self-renovated Dublin townhouse is filled with upcycled pieces, vintage finds and clever design
MY STORY
We’d been renting for a few years when we decided to buy our own place in 2012. There are memories and a lot of personality and integrity to an older property and we were looking for a home like this, with romantic period details. I love the character and classic features of an older home, so when we first viewed this house, I was immediately drawn to the high ceilings in the living room and the hallway, as well as the sash windows and fireplace. We also loved the area. The street is so quiet and friendly, but it’s close to the city centre. While it needed a complete revamp, we could see the potential. We knew immediately it was the right house for us. The property needed a lot of attention and care to get it up to standard, and we wasted no time getting started. On the first night we moved in, we peeled back the
carpets to take a look at the floorboards and it wasn’t a pretty sight. We also exposed the brickwork in the hallway and you can imagine how horrendous the dust was! A lot of plaster and mortar was knocked off the wall and carried out to the skip. We re-did the kitchen and bathroom, and when I was pregnant with Willow, we turned the spare room into a nursery. We also put our stamp on the master bedroom with lots of new décor and a couple of gallery walls, made up of favourite prints and photos from special trips and our wedding. We wanted to bring our style to the house, while still respecting its original features and charm. Now there are four of us, and it’s the perfect family home. I think this house will always be a bit of a work in progress, but I can’t wait to watch it evolve.

We lco me TO MY HOME A BIT ABOUT ME I’m Claire Brown, a photographer. I live here with my husband, Paddy, who is a building surveyor, and our two girls, Willow, aged three, and Bonnie Belle, six months, as well as our golden retriever, Rio. WHERE I LIVE Our home is a three-bedroom Victorian townhouse, near the south city centre of Dublin. WHAT I WANTED TO CHANGE We were keen to highlight the period features, starting with uncovering the original floorboards and exposing some of the brickwork. We wanted to freshen the whole place up by painting most of the walls white and putting our stamp on the rooms with pieces that are personal to us, along with vintage and high-street buys. HOW I MADE IT MY OWN As well as painting, replastering, rewiring and plumbing, we have re-done the kitchen and the family bathroom, and put in parquet flooring throughout. We’ve also just given our garden an overhaul.

One of the first things the couple did was rejig the kitchen. Stripping out the old units, they moved the new kitchen into the window area. ‘We replaced the cabinets with standard IKEA units and added a brass tap and handles for a luxe look,’ says Claire. ‘We also created shelving above the windows for extra storage and to display accessories, while a Belfast sink is a lovely statement feature.’ Inspired by Hans J Wegner’s classic Wishbone design, the dining room chairs are from the Helen James collection at Dunnes Stores. Patterned tiles zone the kitchen area and bring colour into the space.

With its ornate white fireplace and oversized mirror, the living room feels stylish and luxurious while also warm and welcoming. A mix of homeware, including a DFS sofa, a vintage Moroccan rug and a second-hand chandelier gives the space an eclectic, personal edge. ‘The fireplace is gas-fired; it has the look of a coal fire, which I love, but with none of the mess,’ says Claire. ‘We sourced the sleeper shelves for the office area [seen overleaf ] from a salvage yard and styled them with sentimental pieces, like old copies of National Geographic, family photos and trinkets picked up on honeymoon to Zanzibar.’

HOW TO...
Renovate a period property Give an old home the love it deserves If your home’s original features have already been ripped out, such as fireplaces and cornicing, look in auction houses, specialist sites online and reclamation yards for items you can put back in. Budget wisely. Period renovations are often not as straightforward as new builds, so get a few quotes for each job. If you can afford it, consider employing a project manager. It might save you time and money in the long run. Use a moodboard. A renovation project can often feel overwhelming. Start a few picture collages and get your ideas down on paper to help you realise your vision.
Be patient and, if you can, live in the space first before you make any big changes. Being in a period home for a length of time allows you to see how the space changes with the seasons and how the light moves around the house. Be creative with the lighting. Opening up spaces, allowing natural light to flow through the property, or incorporating intelligent light solutions will make any space feel bigger and more welcoming.

Hallway ‘I love the high ceiling in the hallway, and the fact that it’s split level. Going upstairs takes you to the bedrooms and downstairs to the living room. Everything was carpeted here when we moved in, so we took up all the carpets, sanded the floorboards and later stripped all the plasterwork in the hallway to expose the original brickwork. I like the character and texture it adds to the space.’

Claire painted the floors and stair treads black to contrast with the fresh white walls
Garden ‘This is where we love to sit and relax on summer evenings, enjoying a glass of wine by the firepit’
Most recently, the couple have given their garden a revamp. ‘It was originally all decking with large unused flowerbeds and a protruding shed in the corner,’ says Claire. ‘We weren’t making the most of the space, so Paddy built a seating area out of brick and wood sleepers. We’re currently in the process of switching over to pebbles instead of grass, as our lawn didn’t work out – it doesn’t get enough sun. I would love to have more time to relax and read out here but for now, life with two little ones is busy!’

Master bedroom
Short on space, the couple have kept furniture pieces to a minimum. Small wall-mounted shelves from IKEA at either side of the bed are a good alternative to bedside tables, with enough room to place a drink and charge a phone
During initial refurbishments, the couple put down dark hardwood floors in the bedroom. While all of the walls throughout the house are either white or a variation, here they opted for a grey concrete finish, which adds tone and texture. The room is finished with a gallery display filled with personal photos, art prints and travel mementoes. Favourite pictures include art from Society6 and Rifle Paper Co. A colourful bed throw made of vintage saris, and cushions from Etsy complete the bohemian, romantic look.

‘Here, we definitely splurged on some things and saved on others, so it all balanced out,’ says Claire. ‘The jungle wallpaper, from American website, Lulu and Georgia, for instance, was a big-ticket item. It was the first thing we chose when I was pregnant with Willow. We were in California at the time so we were able to order it and take it home from there. We put a rocking chair in the corner for feeding Bonnie Belle and reading stories before bed.’

In keeping with the romantic feel of the house, Claire chose a decorative French-look vanity unit with a white marble top and gold mirror above it as her washstand in the bathroom. The baby basket is by Olli Ella, while the couple use the vintage dresser as a changing unit
WHAT I LEARNED... If you’re anything like me and you change your mind a lot, stick to whites. I would go for more neutral base tones at first, and introduce your colour in items that can be easily switched out. Create moodboards on Pinterest and using Photoshop. I found it helped to visualise how a finished room will look in terms of seeing what colours complement each other. ‘We chose this vanity unit because of the storage space it has. There’s plenty of room for all our toiletries, keeping the top free to display nice-looking decorative items’
Stock up on cleaning products. With a white house like this, and two kids, plus a dog in tow, I’ve learned to clean as we go before the mess dries in. I’ve also realised how valuable a cordless vacuum is!

Measure the outside edge of your hoop and add 20cm, this is measurement A. To make the top of the canopy, measure the diameter of the hoop and divide it in two. Then add 32.5cm to this measurement. Call this new measurement, B. Take measurement A and divide it by four, this is measurement C. Make the top of the canopy by cutting four triangles out of the fabric. Cut the base of each triangle to measurement C and the two sides to measurement B. Sew all of the triangles together along their long sides using a 2.5cm seam allowance. Then, sew a loop of herringbone tape at the centre so that you can hang the canopy up. To make the base, measure the desired height of your canopy and add 20cm, this is measurement D. Cut one big rectangle that is measurement D on both long sides, and measurement A + 40cm on the shorter sides. Hem the edges of the two long sides and one of the short sides. On the remaining short side, sew a line of wide stitches at 2cm and another at 3cm away from the raw edge. Anchor one end of both lines with a backstitch; leave the other free. Line up the hemmed long edges of the base to one of the seams at the top. Then pull the free ends of the wide stitches so the fabric gathers up evenly. Do this until the gathered edge is small enough to sew to the raw edge at the top of the canopy, then sew them together. Inside the canopy, sew strips of herringbone tape at intervals along the new seam. Leave the ends of the strips loose. Use these strips to tie the hoop inside your new canopy and it’s ready to hang up!

My colourful décor brings me SO MUCH JOY Lindsey Isla Henderson wasn’t bowled over by her house the first time she saw it, but she could see it becoming her dream kaleidoscope home
Inspiring homes Lindsey is a colour lover, and feels most at home in bright and cheery, yet minimal, spaces. To achieve her signature look in the kitchen-diner, she went for white, handleless cabinets with plain tiles and lots of fun, colourful accents

Welcome TO MY HOME
Grout is a cool way to add a subtle colour pop to tiled spaces
A BIT ABOUT ME I’m Lindsey Isla Henderson, 31, a fashion and lifestyle influencer @lindsey_isla. I live here with my partner, George Pelham, a singersongwriter @georgepelham and our dog, Sunday. WHERE I LIVE Our home is a two-bedroom terraced house in Margate, Kent. We’ve lived here since December 2020. WHAT I WANTED TO CHANGE George and I both work from home so we decided to turn the old galley kitchen into a soundproofed music studio for George and the original dining room into a kitchen-diner. The rest of the house mostly just needed decorating to our taste.
LIFE IN COLOUR p54
HOW I MADE IT MY OWN We really thought about where and how we would spend our time here, and what brings us joy. I’m obsessed with colour, so adding lots of vibrancy really helped to make this house feel like our home.
MY STORY
This was the third property in Margate that we put an offer on. We didn’t walk in and fall head over heels for the place, but we were really specific about what we wanted, and this house ticked all the boxes. Luckily, we were the first people to see this house when it went on the market. We told the estate agents that we’d offer the asking price if they cancelled the rest of the viewings, and it worked! The first thing we did was to rip up the carpets and the flooring to expose the floorboards underneath. We were quite lucky that nothing major needed doing
when we moved in. If we had wanted to, we could have chosen not to do anything to the house, but the kitchen and the bathroom were very tired looking. It took us about three months to get everything done – George and I worked so hard painting the walls and sanding floors. We employed my brother, who is a boatfitter, to do our kitchen and bathroom, and we roped in my parents and grandad to help, too. They were so helpful. There are things that I still want to do, and I love how I can update it so easily. I’m always being inspired by things I’ve seen and I like having a place that grows with me.

MY FAVOURITE PART All the colourful grouting we’ve added. It’s been a great way to bring fun and character to the place. It’s a small detail that makes something boring, like a white tile, really interesting.
Kitchen-diner
‘The kitchen used to be a galley at the back of the house and it was tiny. George and I both needed a studio space for work, so we decided to rip out the old kitchen and turn it into George’s music studio, and the old dining room became our kitchendiner. It took us a while to work out the best way to design the kitchen and make it fit in the dining room. We love eating at the table so having a dining set that looks great was important. I like design spaces that are bright and minimal, so I didn’t want to have any cupboards on the wall, which meant we had to sacrifice some storage space.’ ‘When it came to the worktop, we couldn’t find one we liked anywhere, so I decided to tile a piece of birch ply instead. This is a design feature I absolutely love, and I’ve even recreated it on the dining room table and on my office desk’
‘The pink tap, from Dowsing & Reynolds, is my favourite feature – I had my eye on it for so long and waited ages for it to come back into stock. It brings me so much joy and looks amazing next to the pink grouting’
Lindsey has set the table with cutlery from John Lewis & Partners, napkins from Olive & Betty and colourful coasters from Etsy ‘We made the dining room tabletop ourselves. The table was the cheapest IKEA design and I left it out in the rain after eating outside one evening, which ruined it. So, I rescued it by tiling the top and adding green grout to contrast with the pink grout on the worktops’ 48 yourhomestyle.uk
Living room
‘We ripped up the floor and sanded the floorboards in here, which were in amazing condition. We had to sand them twice, though, as the first time we oiled them they looked horrible, so we did it again and whitewashed them. I wanted to do a picture rail in the living room, but I didn’t feel like I had the time or the skill to install one, so I created this effect with paint instead. It gave the room a dream-like feel, which is why I stuck to strictly pink and green with the cushions and furniture. I wanted the room to look like it had been dipped in green paint.’
‘I like design spaces that are bright and minimal’
Lindsey has given her living room a fresh, playful feel with a dusky pink and mint ice-cream scheme. The addition of velvet, checkerboard prints and curved furnishings give it a tinge of Sixties-style glam. ‘We don’t have much furniture in here as I love minimalism, but everything we do have is from MADE.com, and the cushions are bargain buys from IKEA’
‘I’m most proud of the staircase, which I painted in a deep green. I really had a strong vision and I pushed myself with that and I think it paid off’
Style idea Paint stairs in a vibrant colour to brighten up a dark hallway
Hallway ‘The hallway was grey, like much of the rest of the house. We ripped up the carpet and I painted the stairs green. I’m obsessed with this colour and it has been so durable. George couldn’t quite believe what he was seeing at first but we both love it and it’s so easy to keep clean. I knew I wanted to remove the banister rail to open up the space in the kitchen and make more of a feature of the stairs. I love how this looks and I’m so glad I went with my gut as I was nervous to remove it. So many people told me not to do it!’

‘It gave the room a dreamlike feel, which is why I stuck to strictly pink and green’
Inspiring homes ‘We painted the stripes on the walls, though everyone always thinks it’s wallpaper. We didn’t invest in a laser level, so we used an old floorboard as a template and used that to measure out all the lines equally’
HOW TO...
Make your home
feel more spacious Even if it’s on the small side
Design ideas
Take a leaf out of Lindsey’s book and go for minimal and small furnishings, or those with narrow frames and legs, to increase the amount of space between homewares and free up as much floorspace as possible.
Head to yourhomestyle.uk for more painting techniques
Mirrors create an illusion of depth as they bounce light around the room – and the larger, the better. If your bedroom is small go for mirror-fronted wardrobes, and consider investing in other reflective furnishings, too. Declutter, and get smart with your storage. Try not to cling onto belongings you can’t pack away – clutter will counteract any other tricks you have used to increase feelings of spaciousness. Consider how you might be able to maximise storage with custom shelving, cupboards and furniture with secret storage compartments.
Music studio ‘We put up soundproof curtains in here and even added pink carpet onto the walls to soak up some sound, too. George wanted this space to feel creative and fun, so we took the painted stripes all the way up the wall and onto the ceiling.’
Try decorating tricks, such as painting the ceiling and the top ¼ section of the walls in a different shade to the lower ¾ section in order to create an illusion of height; or opt for light-coloured flooring to open up the space.
Lindsey’s gallery display is made up of prints from sellers including Lucy Kitch Creative, @aahsocute and Fy! The frames are from her parents’ picture frame shop, Ian Grant Design

Bedroom
‘When we first moved in here the carpet was hanging on by a thread – it practically disintegrated when we removed it. When we pulled the wallpaper off it took most of the plaster with it, so we got the whole room redone. To make the space feel bigger, we chose a double bed over anything larger. I didn’t want there to be much else in here to make sure it was as relaxing as possible. With the blue on the walls and the striped Habitat bedding, I was conscious it might look nautical, so I made sure to throw in other colours and contrasting stripes.’
‘Everyone says how calm and peaceful it feels’ ‘We stacked these crates from HAY to make a bedside table. I thought it added some playfulness to the room and it was really budget-friendly, too. I love the striped bolster cushions from IKEA. The colours bring me so much joy and it’s so comfortable. It’s my safe space’ A Mustard Made locker provides handy storage, while a dress hung on the door doubles up as pretty décor

Lindsey has gone for a top-to-toe pink look in her office, where she’s painted the floorboards, radiator and the window frame in her favourite colour. She keeps work essentials on her DIY tile-topped desk, including an IKEA desk lamp, a selection of notebooks and a motivational art print by artist Camille Gressier at Fy! The IKEA chair fits in with the pink theme

Bathroom
‘The bathroom used to have beige tiles, black vinyl flooring and, as you came down the corridor, you had a view of the toilet. We changed the layout, so now the bath runs along the back wall and that’s what you can see from the corridor. We had all the plumbing built into the wall, which meant that we had the walls brought in a little. We also knocked down the ceiling and exposed the beams, making the room feel so much bigger.’ Lindsey’s sink unit was made from MDF before being tiled and grouted in her trademark playful, minimal style. ‘I upcycled an IKEA mirror with this red metallic frame. I got my dad, who is a picture framer, to send it to me. I love how the pop of red contrasts with the other colours in the room’
make
TUFTED BATH MAT p56
‘The little pink stool is a bargain buy from Aldi and I bought the clothing rail on Amazon for less than £20’
Office
Part of Lindsey’s job as a fashion influencer is to showcase outfits on Instagram, so a clothes rail and full-length mirror are office essentials. ‘I love the light in this room; it’s at the back of the house so it gets the sun all day. It’s had a few transformations as I’ve done different projects in here for work. I was so excited about painting the floor as I’d never seen it done in pink and it’s my favourite colour. I think with the light, you could do anything in here and it would look great.’
‘There is so much I love about this room, including the green grouting. It makes me smile every day’
WHAT I LEARNED... Don’t ask for anyone else’s opinion. Nobody can see the vision you have for the space, and until it’s there in front of them they will never know what it’s going to be like. Trust your gut and go for it. There’s a YouTube video for everything. If you’re working to a budget or simply enjoy learning skills and getting stuck in, you’ll be able to find tutorials for everything from fitting shelves to tiling. I wouldn’t paint a north-facing room in a cold colour. Cool tones tend to make the space feel frosty and uninviting.

FLORAL BATH MAT Get to grips with latch hooking and add a pop of personality to your bathroom, like Lindsey – when you’ve mastered this skill you can use it all over the home!
Top tip Arcylic yarn is mildew resistant, so it's a great choice for making bathroom rugs
You will need
● latch hook tool ● 50 x 70cm rug canvas ● acrylic yarn, one ball each of green, light
peach, orange and white; three balls of peach ● scissors ● pencil or bullet tip marker ● cardboard (optional) ● darning needle ● template
1
Go to Yourhomestyle.co.uk and search ‘floral bathroom template’, then download and print. Remember to print the design at 100 per cent scale so that it measures 50 x 70cm. Alternatively, draw your own motif onto a piece of paper of the same size. Cut a piece of rug canvas that measures 50 x 70cm and trace the floral design onto it. Cut 3m of your first wool colour into 8cm lengths. To speed up this process, cut a piece of stiff cardboard to 15cm long and 4cm wide, wrap the wool around the width, and then cut through the wool along one edge. To attach the wool to the rug canvas, push the tip of the latch hook underneath a strand of canvas where you want to place the colour. The hook and latch will be on one side of the canvas and the bar and handle on the other. Place your yarn under the bar of the hook and pull both ends of the yarn, making sure they are even. Open the latch then insert the ends of the yarn into the opening. Pull your latch hook back through the canvas and the loop of yarn to create a knot (pulling the latch through the canvas will close it). Tug on the ends of your yarn to tighten the knot. Repeat the process to fill in the rows. Work from one short edge and move towards the other (cutting more wool as required). Refer to the main image for colour placement. Trim any stray long ends on the rug with scissors if needed. Then use the orange wool and a darning needle to stitch over the outside edge of the canvas to cover the exposed canvas.

LOOK U P The original ceiling rose in this room was one of the first things I fell in love with when viewing our Victorian townhouse. Along with other period features, it made me realise that we could make the house beautiful again. I’d describe our home style as global eclectic with bohemian and vintage touches. I love to incorporate pieces of furniture, textiles and art that’s been collected from our travels and time living abroad. The antique Chinese chest in this room is one of my favourite pieces. @camden_house1886

PRET T Y & PRAC TICA L
I love creating gallery walls by mixing prints, framed sentimental items, family photos and artwork I’ve made, such as the pink pineapple and orange flower. I love this angle because there’s so much to look at but the colours complement each other and really pop. My house used to be grey, grey, grey and it made me feel drab too but I’m brave enough to experiment now and I would describe my style as happy, vibrant and quirky! @_notjustgrey
Our home style combines modern design with classic homewares. We love having green and earthy colours with natural leafy motifs around the house, complemented with gold accents. We upcycled this chest of drawers and matching fitted wardrobes when we moved in to reflect this look. We have a small home so multi-function is important in all areas, and this spot doubles up as a nice easy-access display for all my accessories! @no1.thecourt

I made the cupboard on the left myself from MDF and stuck thin beading onto the front then painted it. The bathroom is super small so I had to put in a very dinky bath, I’m short so luckily it’s not a problem for me! I love pastels, and I think I’ve pulled off the aesthetic in here. One problem room Lilly s con ser vatory This is the conservatory at the back of our house. At the moment it’s a bit of a dumping ground. I’d love to make it more homely, somewhere we can entertain guests and chill out after work – reading and enjoying a drink, etc. Like a lot of conservatories, it’s too warm in the summer and cold in the winter, so it would be great if we could use it all year round. Likes: gold accents, luxurious materials, pastels. Dislikes: lots of pine wood and anything that’s dominated by a grey or neutral colour scheme that can look and feel cold.

Lisa’s style tips ● Place a drinks trolley in the room to create a mini bar area with cocktail shakers, beautiful coupe glasses and vibrant glass votives. ● Use stencils to add colour and pattern to a wall or floor. Cheaper than wallpaper, you can use leftover paints or sample pots to save money (see our feature on p76).
WHY IT WORKS A casual take on a cocktail lounge, the sumptuous velvets, rich colours and opulent gold accents will elevate Lilly’s conservatory into an inviting space that’s perfect for entertaining. The gentle colour palette of blush pink with a splash of yellow will keep the room feeling light and bright in summer, while deeper teal tones transform it into a cosy sanctuary in winter.

Keep a basket full of rolled blankets at hand to stay warm and cosy on chilly nights. ● Address the fluctuating seasonal temperatures with a folding screen that can be moved to the right place to diffuse harsh sunlight in summer, and a plug-in electric stove to bring warmth on cold days.
What did Lilly decide? ‘I love Lisa’s cocktail hour scheme. The pieces are all so on-trend, they would work in any room in the house and would be easy to swap out if I ever fancy a change. I definitely need those beautiful glasses and cocktail cart for summer drinks with the girls!’

AROUND IN CIRCLES
COLOUR ZONE Energise your working day by zoning the area around your desk with bright colours. Yellows and oranges will help to keep you motivated, while a dash of nearby blue will act as an aid for deep thinking. Using different shades to define areas for specific activities, such as working, reading or sleeping, can help your mind to focus on the task. It’s a neat trick in children’s bedrooms, or for breaking up large open-plan living areas. Apply the basics of colour psychology to your paint choices and select bold tones for a lively, fun-filled area or tone things down with tranquil pastels or very deep hues in spaces designed for relaxation. Choose a pale base tone for the rest of your walls to tie your scheme together.
Perfect curves look tricky to achieve, but there are a couple of different ways you can plot them out before you start painting. If you’re planning to create several circles or curves of the same size, it might be worth investing in a reusable stencil. For a one-off design, follow the steps below for the nail and string method.
01
Walls in matt emulsion in Snowdrop, from £18 per 2.5L; headboard in flat matt emulsion in Cushion Craze, from £36 per 2.5L, both Crown
Use warm, earthy tones to create a dreamy effect for a good night’s sleep
Start by marking the centre of your curve or circle. For the headboard design shown on this page, the centre point would be the middle of the width of the bed and level with the top of the skirting board. Make a mark at the widest point of your design. Cut a piece of string 10cm longer than the space between your two marks.
02
03
BEFORE SUNSET Get in on the shaped headboard trend without splashing out hundreds of pounds for a new piece of furniture. Painting your headboard straight onto the wall instead means you’ll have a choice of thousands of colours and hundreds of shapes. Minimalist styles, such as curves or straight-edged blocks are quick to apply and you can easily create this look in an afternoon. If you have a bit more time, why not try something more ornate, like a stepped or scalloped design? Use a washable paint for these headboards as regular contact with the wall can cause marks to build up.
Use a thin brush to paint in the edges of the design. Use the tip of the brush to push the paint up to the pencil line so you get a crisp edge. If you don’t trust your painting skills, use tape to mask out the design instead. Cut small slits into the outside edge of the tape and gently bend it around to follow your drawn line. August 2022 77
Feature Hannah Tribe Tutorial images Dulux
Tap a nail into the wall at the centre point, then tie the string to the nail. At the other end of the string, tie a pencil. The distance between the nail and the pencil should be the same as the distance between the two marks on your wall. Hold the pencil so that the string is taut and lightly draw the guideline for your curve.

Sunshine yellow and sky blue are great choices for complementing the view outside of your window
FINE LINES Marcus Jarvis, In House Painter & Decorator at decorating tools brand, Harris, explains how to paint super-neat edges with ease. Along with great coverage and a smooth finish, neat edges are vital if you want to feel satisfied with your DIY painting and decorating. The most important thing is to use a paint brush that’s been specifically designed for ‘cutting in’ (painting edges). Look for a brush with tapered bristles that create a thin, blade-like edge. This will give you more control and an improved finish. 01 Start painting by placing the wide tip of the brush against the edge and pulling the paint along in segments around a metre at a time. Then, using the brush as you normally would, thicken the edge by another 5–10cm.
01
02 With the edge complete, switch to a roller to fill in the outlined block. Start about a foot from where you’ve cut in and apply the paint in a W motion. Overlap as much of the brush-painted area as you dare, remembering to avoid painting over the actual edge. This technique will blend the brush-painted edges in, preventing a ‘framed’ look.
02
SUNNY SIDE UP Open up your alcoves with radiant colour. Far from being dark corners, these recessed features can be turned into the focal points of your room. Sunshine yellow and sky blue are great choices for complementing the view outside of your window and you can go on to paint the window frame with specialist paint too. If your alcoves are set into the wall around a fireplace, punchy orange tones will make the room feel cosier. If you don’t have alcoves, you can apply this principle to shelving units and bookcases instead.

SENSATIONAL STENCILS Stippling brushes at the ready! Stencils are back from the Nineties to brighten up dull walls. These straightforward templates are a super-flexible alternative to wallpaper, you can use them to add a little (or a lot!) of playful pattern. Make it your own by choosing your favourite colours and play with placement in different areas of the room. One of the joys of stencilling is the slightly imperfect final result. It plays into the folksy, handmade trend of the last few years and you’ll enjoy knowing you did it all yourself. If you indulged in this trend the last time around, you’re probably already a dab-hand but, if you’re starting out on your stencil journey there are a few tips you need to remember. Spray the back of the stencil with a low-tack spray adhesive before you begin, this will help to stop the stencil from moving while you work. Always use a small amount of paint at a time, it’s a good idea to start with a brush or sponge that is almost dry to build up a barrier around the edge of the stencil before filling in the middle. Apply the paint at a right angle to the wall, dabbing it in small sections until you get the desired effect.
Use high-end tester pots to elevate your scheme
Walls in Napoleonic Blue wall paint, £41.95 per 2.5L, Flowers in English Yellow, Emperor’s Silk, Pure and Amsterdam Green chalk paint, £23.95 per 1L; Meadow Flowers stencil, £17.95, all Annie Sloan
Matt emulsion in Friendly Pink, Fresh Yellow, Fresh Aqua, from £21 per 1L, YesColours
Expert advice BLOCK PARTY Emma Bestley, Creative Partner of YesColours reveals how to makeover your room using less paint. Rather than taking on the task of painting an entire room, look for areas to be creative. Consider where you can inject colour and personality without too much fuss. One option is colour blocking – a clever way to zone a space. Or, you could consider adding a little extra flair with a painted arch, horizontal strip or organic shape in your favourite colour. Another brilliant quick task to enhance a room would be to paint a frame or block of colour onto your wall around your framed art, or a mirror. Overall, the most important thing is to let your imagination run wild. Your walls are a blank canvas, ready and waiting for you to reinvent your space. After all, you can always paint it back if you change your mind! Wood paint in Bishop Blue, Dulcote Stone and Peregrine Blue, £20 per 750ml, Thorndown

FLEXIBLE FEATURES
COLOUR THAT POPS
Revamping large pieces of furniture can make a big difference to how your room feels, sometimes even more so than painting on your walls. It’s an easy way to add colour to rented homes and a fun project to take out into the garden on dry days. Upgrading your drawers with stripes makes use of small amounts of paint in different hues, so it’s ideal if you have a lot of tester pots hanging around. For a refined effect, pick a palette of three colours and repeat these across the piece. If you want to create something more playful, why not try a rainbow or blend similar hues together for an ombré look? Remember to check the formula of the paint you’re using to see what kind of finishing it might need to help the new colours stand up to every-day use.
Shine a spotlight on woodwork by dressing it up in a daring new shade. A fresh coat of colour will bring the delicate details of traditional style carpentry into focus. If your mouldings are more streamlined, the change in tone will add sharp, graphic interest to your room. Pump up the volume by adding a pop of contrasting colour to your existing scheme. Using shades that sit on the opposite sides of the colour wheel is a quick stylist’s trick to create dynamic looks. Pink and green is an Instagram favourite, and a great example of this hack. You can also try a duo of lilac and lemon for energising living areas, as well as a zesty orange and blue combo as shown to full effect in this hallway and dining room.

Pots of style For those of us without an outdoor space, cultivating a thriving statement garden indoors is a great way of getting a nature-fix each day in a super-stylish way! Complement your plant collection with wooden textures. Desser Shanghai rattan lounge chair, £259.99; jute pouffe, £79, from the Green Therapy range, John Lewis & Partners
On display With the right care and styling techniques, you can make a green getaway within your own four walls, come rain or shine outside. You may want to have one specific area for your indoor garden, or you might prefer to spread your plants throughout your home. Whichever you choose, showing your plants off to their best is a must. Switch up the height levels by positioning some plants on the floor, others on raised planters and a selection on shelves or even hanging from the walls and ceiling. This will create an immersive feel and blend the boundary between outdoors and in. Create zones in your home for different types of plant species. Window ledges are great for sun-loving succulents and cacti, while bathrooms are ideal for rainforest varities, such as ferns and tropical species like the popular Monstera deliciosa (Swiss cheese plant). Knowing where each plant group is in your home will make watering and tending easier too, as you can tackle it one zone at a time.

SUN OR SHADE? Sarah Gerrard-Jones, author of The Plant Rescuer breaks down the two types of light for plants: ‘Direct light means there is nothing (other than the window glass) obstructing the light reaching your plant. Indirect light means that the sun’s rays aren’t hitting the plant. It can also mean partially filtered light, which is passing through something before it reaches your plant, like leaves on a tree outside or a semi-opaque window covering.’ 84 yourhomestyle.uk

Propagation power If you’re concerned that creating a health-boosting botanical oasis in your home is going to be too expensive, don’t worry! You can tap into the positive effects of plants and save money by propagating any species that you might already have. For propagation success, you’ll need pruners, a small trowel, spare pots, a houseplant potting mix and a flat surface that you won’t mind getting a bit grubby with split soil. There are three methods of propagating, depending on the variety of plant. Cuttings involves removing a stem or leaf of a plant (try it on devil’s ivy); division means removing a section that has separate stems from the rest of the plant (prayer plants), and offsets – cutting off the small replicas that can grow as offshoots from the main plant (spider plants). Once you’ve got your cutting, division or offshoot, plant it into a big enough pot for its size. Make sure that it’s well covered with the houseplant potting mix but leave enough room for the roots to grow down. Give it a very gentle sprinkle of water and place in a light room. You should see development within four weeks but be patient as some plant cuttings take longer. Keep mess to a minimum with a helpful potting tarp. From £17.20, TomNoahDesign at Etsy

STAY HYDRATED Some plants love a daily mist while others like to soak up a good dose of water from the bottom of the pot. Search online to see what your plants need. Author Sarah Gerrard-Jones explains that the season will affect watering routines too; ‘In the summer, houseplants use more water than in winter. As a guide, I’d recommend reducing the frequency of watering by 50 per cent during the colder months.’ Try a clever hydroponic plant, which uses water to grow. If you think you need an outdoor space to grow vegetables, think again! A sunny windowsill is a great spot for harvesting herbs, while a handy indoor greenhouse can let you grow larger produce, such as lettuce, tomatoes, chillies, peppers, radishes and even carrots. Growing your own produce provides you with instant, fresh flavour for your meals and cuts down on your grocery costs. Herbs including rosemary, thyme and basil will also emit a wonderful scent into your home. To get started, choose an area with consistent light levels (a south-facing window is ideal), away from draughts. Pick pots with good drainage holes – terracotta is perfect because it’s porous and retains less moisture than your average plastic plant pot, it also looks lovely and is better for the environment. Place your herb plant or vegetable seeds in an indoor potting mix, give it a delicate watering and let your baby veggies grow! To keep them happy, give them an occasional dose of liquid or granular fertiliser every other week or so. You can also pop some pebbles at the bottom of your pots to increase the drainage. No space for large pots or a greenhouse? Try propagating vegetables from scraps! Using veg you already have in the fridge is a fun, space-saving and eco-friendly way to grow your own produce. Onions, lettuce, celery, and avocados are some good examples to try. Simply pop your scraps in a jar or container with the bottom dipped in water and place in natural, direct light. To make things easier and neater, you can now buy clever germination discs that you can place on the top of glasses or jars.

I’m Aurélien Farjon, an interior stylist. I live in a three-bed Edwardian house in Croydon with my partner, Fernando, and our whippet, Fino. I love to share my creative projects on Instagram @aurelieninteriors.
My room...
MY PROBLEM GARDEN The way the garden had been laid out didn’t work for us at all. The path was on the wrong side, and everything was quite linear and boring. As a self-confessed maximalist, it was too bare-looking for me. I need lots of things everywhere for a space to feel like home. I believe your garden, much like your interiors, should be a reflection of you, and it wasn’t. HOW I MADE IT WORK I created different zones, such as a coffee area for the morning and a bar area in the sun for a drink in the evenings. I wanted the garden to be a peaceful sanctuary where we could escape from our busy schedules and take a moment to pause. MY FAVOURITE PART Turning the garden shed into a summer bar was a highlight. It definitely has the wow factor and I love revealing it to guests. 92 yourhomestyle.uk

BRING THE INDOORS OUT Maximise your time outdoors by making it as comfortable as possible. ‘I’ve added some PVC sheets on top of our pergola to protect the seating from the rain so I can dress it like an indoor space with plenty of cushions, a throw and a rug, and not worry about it getting wet,’ says Aurélien. ‘I’ve also added a little shelf above the seating area where I display ornaments, just like I would in my living room. Putting solar-powered lights inside the ceiling pendant means that on warm evenings I can relax in there until late.’
RAISE A GLASS ‘We had to dismantle the shed to get work done,’ says Aurélien. ‘As we were about to put it back up together, Fernando suggested turning it into a garden bar instead (needless to say, he didn’t need to twist my arm!). We added vertical batons to bring the roof higher on one side and then created a bar top with a piece of wood that’s held open with a chain. To finish, I created a faux tiled surface using stick-on decals from Wayfair. When guests arrive at any garden party it’s always a conversation starter and everyone gravitates towards it.’
EMBRACE COLOUR ‘If you can’t get experimental with décor in the garden, then where else? Bold colours look incredible in the direct sunlight, which is why I would encourage everyone to go for at least one great pop of colour somewhere in their space. Go for a colour that makes you happy when you look at it, and it will brighten even the darkest of days! I love mixing pastels with a bright accent.’ If you don’t want to go for a ‘more-ismore’ look, like Aurélien, tap into the trend with bold and bright accessories that are easy to swap out. 94 yourhomestyle.uk
Style idea Add a beach vibe with a set of floaty curtains
‘I’ve used recycled plastic rugs to define zones. They feel so soft when walking barefoot in the summer and they don’t retain moisture if it rains. The best part is they’re made out of recycled plastic bottles. I try to be as eco-friendly as I can’
‘I’m a great believer in spending money with brands that give back, whether that’s to the environment or impoverished communities. These woven bowls are from Lola & Mawu who work with local artisans in Africa’
MY EXPERIENCE When we first moved in, the garden was a bramble jungle! We had to carve our way through to get to the fence and after a few days chopping all the overgrowth down (thanks, Dad!) we could finally see what we were working with. We lived in the house for a few months before doing any work. I paid attention to the parts of the garden that got the sun at different times of the day and took that into account when designing the space. I really liked the idea of painting the fence and border wall pink, as it echoes so many exciting destinations: Morocco, Mexico and the Caribbean. When it comes to paint, I try to go for eco-friendly options, which is how I found COAT Paints. It’s water-based, doesn’t smell and was an absolute dream to apply. I’m passionate about upcycling, and I love re-purposing old materials, so I decided to create a corner bench out of wooden pallets. I kept an eye out for disposed pallets on my daily travels and after a few weeks I had collected enough to start building – two for the back rests and four for the seating. I gave them a good sanding down and finished them with a chalk paint, a mix of Giverny blue and English Yellow by Annie Sloan. I get so many health benefits from the garden. I love meditating to the sound of birds, practising yoga on the lawn or just soaking up the sun. I’ve learnt that the more you give to your garden, the more it gives back. Having designed distinct zones means that I find myself here from morning to night. It’s the perfect place to enjoy long summer days.

‘Just painting the walls and shelves in a peach tone made a huge difference’
My once tired kitchen
NOW LOOKS PEACHY KEEN After knocking down a wall, painting the room peach and creating DIY shelves, Laura Davies is enjoying styling up her new-look space
About me
I’m Laura Davies, a freelance writer, aged 44. I live with my husband, David, 43, and my daughters, Nico, 12, Marcy, 10, and our poodle, Elvis. Our home is a four-bedroom house in Worthing, Sussex and I post updates on my interiors adventures on Instagram @leopard_print_stairs.
My room... MY PROBLEM KITCHEN The original kitchen was small, dark and claustrophobic and it wasn’t big enough for our family to enjoy the space together. HOW I MADE IT WORK We knocked down a wall between the kitchen and utility room to create a large open-plan space. Bi-fold doors were installed that open out onto our garden, making the room feel much bigger. More recently, we painted the walls peach, giving it a bright, modern look. MY FAVOURITE PART My kitchen shelves. I’m always styling my growing collection of plants, crockery and glassware. I use accessories to add colour and texture to my kitchen, so the space is always changing.

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home
JUST PEACHY Paint your space in a blush peach tone, like Laura, to add warmth to your walls and complement wooden worktops, vintage accessories and off-white units.‘I chose this colour as it changes beautifully over the course of the day – it feels fresh and bright during daytime, then mellows into a cosy peach hue when the sun sets,’ says Laura.‘Plus, I knew my plants would‘pop’perfectly with this as a backdrop!’Remember to choose a kitchen paint for a hard-wearing finish.
SMART LAYOUT Get clever with the layout, especially if you’ve inherited a tricky feature in your kitchen, like Laura’s fireplace alcove. Laura made the most of this space by putting her cooker inside and lining the back and sides with white gloss metro tiles to create a wipe-clean splashback. Rather than this area being a wasted space, it has now become integral to the kitchen design. If you’ve got the same issue, remember to ask your electrician to install a plug socket in a tricky area like this during the build.
MAXIMISE STORAGE As well as providing lots of storage, open shelving makes the perfect display space for kitchen accessories. For optimum interest, Laura loves to mix vintage pieces with highstreet favourites, including buys from Flying Tiger, Primark and H&M Home. Laura found her wooden brackets in B&Q and made the shelving out of basic pine planks. ‘I painted the shelves and brackets the same as the walls, in Pink 02 by Lick, so they blend seamlessly into the space and help make my art and accessories really stand out.’ 100 yourhomestyle.uk
Laura’s kitchen was the biggest project in the house. She considered an extension at first, but she didn’t want to lose space in the garden. By knocking two rooms into one, she created a large space for all the family
Kitchen makeover
Style idea Embrace the rustic look with wicker pendants
The space at the end of the kitchen was the perfect size for the 1930s cupboard that Laura uses as her pantry. She found the piece on eBay for £100 and painted it white to tie in with the kitchen’s light and airy feel
MY EXPERIENCE When we moved into this house in April 2012, this area was divided into a small kitchen and an adjoining utility room. The kitchen had cheap MDF units and a fake wooden worktop. The wall tiles had been painted over and the floor was covered in tatty lino. There really wasn’t a lot to love about the space. We saved up for two years to pay for the renovations. In 2014, we hired builders to knock down the wall between the two rooms and install bi-fold doors to the garden. We made the fireplace bigger too so we could fit in a range-style cooker. I decided to go for a Scandinavian look with IKEA units, light oak worktops and a ceramic sink. Instead of wall cabinets, we fitted shelving. Early this year, it felt like the right time to give the kitchen a glow up. Just painting the walls and shelves in a peach tone made a huge difference. The space instantly looks more modern. We switched out the silver tap and handles for gold-coloured ones and I changed the industrial metal pendant shades to pretty rattan designs. As a family, we use this kitchen so much. There’s always music playing, and we love to cook in here. Our kitchen has a relaxed feel, making it the perfect space for entertaining.

We planned every detail of our BRIGHT BATHROOM After half a decade spent planning her dream bathroom, Abigail May-Neve knew exactly what she wanted from her new-look space
About me I’m Abigail May-Neve, a freelance fashion designer @annamhliving. I live with my husband, Mark, and our three children, Maya, Rudy and Ettienne. Our home is a four-bedroom 1930s house in Bradmore, Nottingham that we bought in 2016.
My room... MY PROBLEM BATHROOM The original bathroom had Artex, pebbledash-style walls with blue and white mosaic tiles. It was very old-fashioned and had a bath with an overhead shower and the toilet was in a separate room. Our home had been extended and reconfigured in a full house renovation. During the build, the bathroom was relocated and stripped to its bare bones. It was left as an empty shell, and needed absolutely everything doing to it. HOW I MADE IT WORK I planned the makeover well in advance and so when the time came to start the interior work, we were prepared with all the bits and pieces we needed, from the tiles to the suite. We wanted more of a wet-room style, so we went for a free-standing bath with a walk-in shower and we did all of the work ourselves. MY FAVOURITE PART It’s got to be the tiles on the floor and in the shower. They’re such showstoppers. 104 yourhomestyle.uk

Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home
TRY DIY The tiles steal the show in Abigail’s bathroom. After finding the design on holiday in Morocco and ordering them upon their return, the couple spent hours arranging them on the bedroom floor before settling on the perfect layout. ‘Laying the tiles was a challenge,’ says Abigail, ‘as we tiled from floor to ceiling, and I was very specific as I wanted a 2cm grout line in between each row of the white subway tiles. Either save up for an amazing tiler to do the fiddly bits or go for it yourself and embrace the fact that it won’t look perfect.’
CLEVER HACKS Along with the tiles, the beautiful Tikamoon sink was another big splurge, so Abigail wanted to make sure it stood out. Together with Mark, she converted a vintage G Plan dressing table, bought on Facebook Marketplace, into a vanity unit by repurposing wood from the mirror-stand to raise the height of the unit. To finish, they covered the top with a sheet of perspex to protect the wood and the sink, which is porous. A wall-mounted tap completes the customised look.
SHOP IN ADVANCE ‘As we had lots of time to prep for the makeover, we bought items as and when we could afford them and stored them until they were needed,’ says Abigail. ‘The bath and toilet were both bought in a January sale, and we kept them in the garage for around two years before the build even started.’ Take inspiration from Abigail and look out for bargains ahead of time. Set up alerts on eBay and Facebook Marketplace and save items on high-street apps, ready to buy when they go down in price. 106 yourhomestyle.uk
‘I find most of my interiors inspiration from the catwalk, visiting exhibitions, museums and from travelling,’ says Abigail. ‘There are lots of great ideas on Pinterest and social media, but don’t miss the opportunity to find inspiration from physical sources, too’
‘If it’s taught me anything, it’s that you can achieve your ideas on a tight budget’
Abigail’s bathroom is proof that luxury interior design needn’t be pared-back, if you don’t want it to be. It can be bold, bright and playful, too as these eye-catching statement tiles go to show
MY EXPERIENCE I had been saving my design ideas on Pinterest for at least five years before starting the bathroom makeover, so when the time came, I knew exactly what I wanted. We bought this house with the intention of extending, reconfiguring, and fully renovating it, but as we live in a conservation area and our home is flanked by two listed properties, it took a long time to get our plans approved. The building work was finally finished in 2020, and once it had been plastered, Mark and I took over the interior works ourselves. We had visited popham design, a tile factory in Marrakesh, while on holiday in 2019, and we brought home lots of samples. After deciding on the designs and colours, we ordered the tiles and the scheme started to come together. The bathroom was an empty shell when the builders had finished. Doing the tiling and grouting took an especially long time, and as this was our only bathroom, we washed in buckets for months. We also had Covid-19 and multiple lockdowns to contend with, so there was no nipping to friends’ homes or to the local swimming pool for a wash as everything was shut down. That said, we love the bathroom so much now it’s finished, it was worth the work we put in. The first shower I took after washing in buckets for so many months was absolute luxury!

Take a pencil and draw a 28cm diameter circle at one end of your wood, a few millimetres in from the edge. We drew around a dinner plate to create an accurate circle. Clamp the wood securely to a workbench and, using a jigsaw fitted with a
scroll saw blade, carefully cut out the circle from the wood. Use the pencil to draw a horizontal line across the centre of the circle. To make the shelf, use a pencil and ruler to draw a rectangle measuring 11cm wide and 28cm long on the remaining piece of wood. Cut out using the jigsaw. The shelf ends should marry up with the widest part of the wooden circle. Use a sanding block to smooth the edges. With a tape measure, mark a cross in the centre of the horizontal pencil line on the wooden circle and another one at a distance of 7cm on either side of the central point. Draw three corresponding crosses, using the same measurements, on the long narrow edge of the shelf. Using a drill and wood bit, drill pilot holes through each of the crosses on the wooden circle. Next, drill a 1cm-deep pilot hole into each of the crosses on the shelf. Working from the back of the wooden circle, fit a screw into each of the three pilot holes until the tips just poke through

the other side. Hold the shelf up against the wooden circle and marry the pilot holes in the shelf to the screw ends. Push the shelf firmly against the wooden circle, turn the screws so they go into the shelf. Take a length of masking tape and place it centrally around the sides and front of the shelf board. Use a paintbrush to apply three coats of copper paint to the lower half of the shelf unit, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next. Once the paint is dry, carefully peel away the masking tape. Use a tape measure and pencil to mark three points 5cm below the bottom of the shelf on the front of the wooden circle. Mark the first point centrally and the second and third points at a distance of 5cm on either side of the central point. Using a drill and wood bit, drill a 1cm-deep pilot hole through each of the three points marked on the wooden circle. Screw a square cup hook into each pilot hole ensuring they are level. Attach two self-adhesive Command Strips to the back of the shelf unit, to hang the shelf securely without damaging the walls.

I’m planning to change the flooring in my living room, which is a long and narrow shape. Do you have any tips on how I can make the space appear bigger? Ashwin Meyrick, Broadstairs
Feature Lisa Hibberd
A
Paul Herbert, Head of Buying (carpets) at Carpetright, suggests… Long, narrow spaces can be a challenge to decorate but there are a few ways to make the area feel more spacious. Unifying the wall and floor colours is a good starting point. Pale neutrals work well but if you can’t live without a splash of colour, opt for a soft pastel tone. If choosing carpet, take a paint swatch and make sure the colours you choose feel harmonious. You probably won’t find an exact match but look for a combination that is a shade or two darker or lighter – it will make the eye feel like there’s less contrast in the scheme. As a rule, lighter colours will give the room an open feel, making it appear larger. If you are working to a budget, luxury vinyl is a great option. Designs like a pale grey concrete effect offer a smart, contemporary design twist. If you are working with a more traditional scheme throughout the home and are using wooden floors, always consider the direction in which it will be laid. Vertical alignment will help to elongate the room. If you can, use the same flooring throughout the entire ground floor, as it helps to create a better sense of flow throughout. 112 yourhomestyle.uk

Q
I love dahlias, but I’ve heard they are hard to grow. I have a small garden, which varieties would be okay in pots? What else do I need to know before I get planting? Kirsty Sampson, Carlisle
A
Sarah Raven from sarahraven.com has this advice… Choose the slightly more compact varieties of dahlia, such as ‘Josie’, aiming for a variety about 75cm tall. Plant three tubers to a 45cm diameter pot, with a good depth. Use peat-free compost mixed with one third loam, with plenty of crocks or grit for drainage in the bottom of your pot. I love my dahlias mixed with Panicum ‘Frosted explosion’or a climber like Thunbergia ‘African sunset’or Rhodichiton. Add some canes and string for dahlia support and then your climbers can be trained up as decoration. In the autumn, after one hard frost, lift the dahlias out of the pot and store until the following spring. You’ll be able to pick handfuls of flowers to decorate the house all summer long. See our full range of beautiful varieties online at sarahraven.com.
Q
My leather sofa has a rip in it, but it’s otherwise in good condition. I don’t want to have to replace it. How can I stop it getting worse? Catrin Pritchard, Wrexham
A
Donna Clarke, Director of MastaPlasta, recommends… Research shows that less than one in 10 people consider repairing their furniture, and in England alone we are throwing out enough sofas to fill up the Royal Albert Hall 150 times every year. A sofa is the heart of a home and we should not begrudge it the odd scar – new puppies, spillages, children with scissors – life happens! So if your sofa is feeling a bit delicate, leather conditioner will keep upholstery strong and flexible. Generally, a damp cloth is all that’s needed to wipe up spillages, and you should always let it dry naturally. The oils in leather help to dissipate stains. If an unfortunate accident results in a rip or tear, MastaPlasta instant self-adhesive leather repair patches will stop it in its tracks and Leather repair patches, can provide a pretty from £8.95, MastaPlasta invisible mend.

Q
My shed needs a fresh coat of paint, and I like the idea of something colourful. How do I prep the wood for painting, and can you give any tips on choosing a colour to suit my garden? Kazia Jedynak, Wolverhampton
Steph Harris, Product Manager at Showerwall, shares these helpful tips… Frameless shower-screen designs are much easier to clean as they have less profile and fewer channels where soap and scum can gather. Many glass screens can also be coated with nano-technology to dramatically reduce the build-up of grime, dirt and gunk. A wall-hung WC has a hidden tank, meaning there are fewer nooks and crevices for dust and dirt to build up; plus, as it’s raised off the floor, cleaning underneath is a breeze. Not cleaning your showerhead regularly can create a build-up of bacteria and limescale, restricting the water pressure and reducing performance. While many traditional showerheads are attached to a rail or bar, opting for an overhead rainfall shower with a quick-release mechanism will allow you to thoroughly de-scale it. Bathroom wall panels are becoming a popular choice, thanks to the grout-free designs. The large format panels have a smooth, flat surface that can be simply wiped down. This low-maintenance and hygienic alternative to tiles is available from Showerwall in over 80 stylish designs, from classic marbles and subway tiles to artisan terrazzo and wallpaper-inspired prints. The waterproof system provides a stain-resistant finish that is effortless to clean.

To prep the wood for painting you need to start by giving the shed a good and thorough clean. Then use an exterior wood filler for cracks, gaps or holes; finally smooth down the surface by sanding it down. Make sure that you’ve covered anything you don’t want to get paint on and you’re ready to get started. When it comes to choosing a colour, consider what will work well with the rest of your outdoor space. Red adds a burst of warmth that pops against a garden’s greenery; or grey or sage can add an elegant, understated feel if carried through to the other elements in your garden, such as fencing and furniture. Once you’ve decided on a colour, make sure you choose a formula that won’t fade in a few months. Ronseal Ultimate Fence Life concentrate is our longest lasting formula – with advanced Ronseal Ultimate Fence Life water-beading technology it stands up to concentrate in Charcoal even the harshest weather conditions and is Grey, £17 per 960ml, B&Q showerproof within an hour of application.

Place a 6cm round cutter or a tumbler over the surface of the rice to create individual portions of rice. Allow to cool. Place the grated cheese, cubed cheese, ham, 1 teaspoon of the passata and some parsley on each of the rice rounds. Season well. Using a palette knife, lift the rounds off the baking sheets and form them into balls, carefully sealing in the filling. Place the round in the palm of your hand like a nest and then squeeze gently to seal. Dip the rounds in the flour, egg and breadcrumbs and deep-fry until golden in plenty of oil. Lift out of the oil and drain on paper towels. Arancini taste at their best when they are served warm.

Red snapper with 2 courgette, olives and spinach Prep time 15 minutes Cook time 15 minutes Serves 4
INGREDIENTS
● 2 x 500g red snapper ● drizzle of olive oil ● 2 pinches of rock or sea salt ● 4 tbsp olive oil ● 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced ● a handful of pitted black olives, halved ● 1 courgette, about 200g, diced ● 1 tsp sweet pimenton (sweet smoked paprika) ● A handful of frozen peas, defrosted ● 3 tbsp sherry vinegar ● 100g baby spinach ● salt and freshly ground black pepper ● 2 tbsp finely chopped fresh chives
Cucina Siciliana by Ursula Ferrigno, published by Ryland Peters & Small (£16.99) Photography by David Munns © Ryland Peters & Small
METHOD
1
Ask your fishmonger to gut and scale your fish for you. At home, simply wash them in cold water and pat them dry really well with a clean cloth or kitchen paper.
Place a pan wide enough to hold the entire fish over a medium heat. Drizzle some olive oil over the fish, season both sides with the salt and pan-fry for about 5 minutes on each side, until crispy and fully cooked. If you put a lid over the pan it will create an oven so that the fish cooks all over and not just on the sides in contact with the pan. Just leave a little opening so that the steam can escape and doesn’t condensate on the lid and fall back into the pan, stopping the fish from crisping up properly. Meanwhile, heat the 4 tablespoons of oil in a large frying pan over a high heat. Add the garlic and cook until starting to turn golden, then add the olives and cook for 30 seconds before adding the diced courgette. Fry for 1 minute and then add the sweet pimenton and the peas. Give the pan a good stir and, after 30 seconds, pour over the sherry vinegar and let it reduce for a few seconds. Add the baby spinach and season with salt and pepper, and finish by adding the finely chopped chives. Serve the fish whole with the vegetables scattered all over.

INGREDIENTS
Jewelled rice Prep time 20 minutes Cook time 40 minutes Serves 6
INGREDIENTS
● 600ml water ● sea salt ● a pinch of saffron fronds ● 450g basmati long-grain rice, rinsed and drained ● 2 tbsp each of dried barberries, dried sour cherries (or cranberries), currants, golden sultanas, raisins, granulated sugar, orange blossom water, freshly squeezed lemon juice, bitter orange peel, very finely sliced ● 2 tbsp samna, or olive oil with a knob of butter ● 120g blanched almonds, cut into slivers ● 120g unsalted pistachio kernels, cut into slivers ● 2 tbsp pine nuts ● 2 tbsp dried apricots, finely sliced ● icing sugar and rose petals
METHOD
1
Boil a pan of water with a pinch of salt. Stir in the saffron and rice, and boil for 3–4 minutes, reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Turn off the heat, cover with a tea towel, put on the lid and leave to steam for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, put the barberries, sour cherries, currants, sultanas and raisins into a bowl. Cover with boiling water and soak for 5 minutes, then drain and put aside. In a small pan, stir the sugar with the orange blossom water and lemon juice until the sugar has dissolved. Bring to the boil, stir in the orange peel and simmer for 5 minutes. Put aside. In a heavy-based pan, heat up the samna (or olive oil and butter) and stir in the nuts and apricots for 1–2 minutes. Add the soaked fruit to the pan carefully (the fruit might spit when it hits the oil) and cook, stirring, for 1–2 minutes. Lift the orange peel out of the syrup and toss most of it through the rice. Tip the rice on a serving dish. Scatter the rest of the orange peel and drizzle with the syrup. Garnish with icing sugar and rose petals to serve.

Peaches poached 2 in Muscat wine Prep time: 10 minutes, plus cooling time Cooking time: 15 minutes 3 Serves 4 INGREDIENTS 4 ● 4 peaches, halved and stoned (nectarines or apricots works as well) ● 1 x 75cl bottle sweet Muscatel wine ● ½ cinnamon stick ● 2 star anise ● 5 juniper berries ● ice-cream, clotted cream or natural yogurt, to serve (optional)
METHOD
1
Place the halved peaches in a deep pan; ideally they should fit snugly, holding each other.
126 yourhomestyle.uk
Add the Muscatel, cinnamon, star anise and juniper berries and cook over a high heat until boiling, then immediately reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes, or until the peaches start to soften. Don’t overcook; they should still be firm. Remove from the heat and leave to cool in the liquid, preferably overnight. This will help the flavours to develop within the fruit. These peaches can be served with a wide range of accompaniments, such as ice-cream, clotted cream or natural yogurt, for a more substantial dessert.

Gelato al pistachio rustico RA MAKE IT EXTR VE SPECIAL & SEGY WITH A ZIN LEMON TART
Prep time 25 minutes, plus cooling time Cook time 35 minutes Serves 4-6
INGREDIENTS
● 100g shelled pistachios, unsalted ● 450ml whole milk ● 450ml double cream ● 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract ● ¼ teaspoon sea salt, crushed ● 100g golden caster sugar ● 4 large eggs
METHOD
1
Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C Fan/Gas Mark 4. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Spread the nuts out in a single layer and toast in the oven for 8 minutes. Cool. Heat the milk and cream in a saucepan until hot, then remove from the heat. Grind the cooled nuts in a food processor until fine but with a little texture, if you like it this way. Add the vanilla and salt and stir well. Whisk the sugar and eggs together until thick and creamy, and the whisk leaves a trail when lifted from the bowl, approximately 8–10 minutes. Combine the milk and eggs in the pan and gently cook the mixture over a low heat. This should not take longer than 8 minutes. Stir really well as this could turn to scrambled egg, so heat gently and carefully. If you would like a pronounced green gelato, cool the mixture and leave overnight in the fridge, then freeze and churn in an ice-cream machine as per the manufacturer’s instructions. If, like me, you are impatient, leave the creamy pistachio custard to cool, then freeze and churn. Serve on its own, or with chocolate ice-cream – they are rather good together.

You can’t go wrong with Madison & Mayfair’s selection of faux plants when teamed with a gold planter
IN CONVERSATION WITH
Kate Conrad
We catch up with Kate Conrad, lead interior designer of Madison & Mayfair, ahead of the brand’s top-secret TV appearance
Many of the brand’s designs are inspired by Kate’s travels around the world
How did you get into interior design?
Any tips for getting a luxe look on a budget?
My family has always been involved in interiors, so it’s been a huge influence throughout my life. I started out as a drama teacher and then after I had my children I felt a bit lost really. I wanted to fill my house with fantastic things, but I couldn’t find what I was looking for. It was then that I thought of starting my own brand. I wanted to create glamorous statement pieces at affordable prices.
Choose pieces that will complement what you already have in your home. Cushions and throws are a quick and easy way to update a space and I really stand by a velvet occasional chair that can go in any room.
Describe Madison & Mayfair’s designs Timeless classics with a twist.
What inspires you?
Kate used to be a drama teacher before pursuing her passion for interior design
Glamorous statement pieces are what Madison & Mayfair are all about
Everything, from watching TV to staying in hotels and reading magazines. I’m a big lover of literature and I like imagining the settings in the books I read. I adore the Brontës and the idea of strong, powerful women. That’s part of why I came out of my comfort zone and started up Madison & Mayfair.
What’s the best thing about your job? Sourcing the products. I often travel to India, Morocco and Spain for inspiration. I love going to different places, seeing what people have to offer and then coming back to the design team with fresh ideas.
Feature Catriona Burns
What would you save in a house fire? My throws and cushions because they make me feel warm and safe.
Whose home would you love to decorate? A style icon, like Elizabeth Taylor or Marilyn Monroe. I think our products lend themselves to that kind of glam style.
Any top Madison & Mayfair picks? We’ve recently launched a Moroccan-style lantern. At just under £50, it can be used everywhere, from outside your front door to the bathroom or on the stairs. We’ve also got a fantastic range of faux plants, if you’re like me and struggle to keep things alive.
If you had an unlimited budget, what would you buy for your home? I’d love an opulent bar outside, complete with beautiful cocktail shakers and glasses. Other than that, I’d buy a really huge bed for the family where everyone could snuggle down and watch TV together.
What’s your proudest career moment? We were contacted by a film studio that was putting together a spin-off series for a very well-known TV programme and they bought a large number of our silver lanterns to use on set. That made me feel really proud. We try to create timeless, traditional products with an interesting twist and that confirmed to me that we’re getting that bit right. I can’t say what the TV programme is yet, but watch this space! Shop Madison & Mayfair at madisonandmayfair.com
