idway between an enclosed shower and an open wet room, a walk-in shower offers the best of both worlds. You get to enjoy the space and level-entry access of a wet room but without having to tank the entire room.

What size does a walk-in shower need to be? In a fully tanked wet room, you can get away with a slightly smaller footprint. ‘For walk-in showers where you want to keep the rest of the bathroom dry, we advise around 50cm width for the entrance way and 50–60cm for the shower area,’ says David Osborne, CEO of Roman Showers. Average walk-in shower widths range from 70–100cm. ‘If you’re worried about keeping water contained, opt for walk-in enclosures with small deflector panels that fold out to restrict spray,’ adds David.
What space do I need?
Walk-in showers can work in very small bathroom. A shower tucked in the corner with access at one end is a good space-saving solution. Bigger bathrooms suit a centrally positioned walk-through shower, with access at both ends.

How do I stop the whole room getting soaked?
Walk-in showers usually have the shower head furthest away from the entrance to keep the bathroom dry. ‘We ideally then have the mixer controls at the entrance,’ says Huntsmore director Eamonn Agha, ‘so you can turn on the shower and adjust the temperature before entering.’
Should I ditch the bath for a walk-in instead?
If you’d love a more spacious shower, choose an enclosure to match the dimensions of a bath (170cm long) to make it an easy swap. The screen and tray are usually sold together. Putting a bath back in is then just as easy, so no need to worry if you plan to move on.
