Space Agency is an integrated architectural and design firm based in London. We work across the spectrum of scales, allowing principles from one scale of design to inform our work in the others. At each scale of design, it is space which is the defining agent. The way space is organized influences perception, patterns of movement, occupation and social vitality. We study the underlying dynamics of how people are influenced by their environment and how we can choreograph their experience of it-be it a residential project that is tailored around the way the inhabitant lives or a retail environment that is based around the style of the brand and the experience of shopping. We take our clients on a journey to discover unutilized potentials and in their space that they may not be aware of. FAMILY HOUSE MAIDA VALE IN COLLABORATION WITH LORENZO VIOLA — LONDON 2005 ⁄ 06
This 5-storey brick Victorian conversion adjoins the Formosa Garden, a large communal garden in Maida Vale, London. The clients sought to convert two self-contained flats into a family home, and had chosen to renovate rather than move in order to take advantage of the amenities of the garden. The design responds to their open, informal approach to family life by decompartmentalising the existing spaces. Bedrooms grouped on one floor reinforce this closeness. The kitchen, formerly facing the street has been moved to garden level where generous french doors open onto the garden patio for summer al fresco dining.

The client’s South African folk art is displayed in custom niches and platforms designed to showcase the client’s collection. A close collaboration with the clients led to a design which was able to capture the potential of the space for their family’s use.

NANNY’S FLAT MAIDA VALE LONDON 2010 ⁄ 11
When this Victorian terraced house was converted into flats, it was created out of the communal corridor plus two other raised levels. As such, the existing configuration was not fit for purpose. Additionally, the flat suffered from dilapidation. The refurbishment comprised a complete re-deisgn and re-fit. The flat has been opened up to take advantage of the views provided by the split levels. The flat will accomodate a nanny, and has been designed with a young, modern aesthetic.

CHELSEA PENTHOUSE LONDON 2010 ⁄ 11
This top-floor flat within a mansion block in Chelsea required modernisation. It had been recently purchased by the client whose aspirations were to have the flat re-designed and adapted to their needs. The project included refurbishing the kitchen in a “bistro” style, renovating the bathroom and the converting a long, narrow bedroom into a master bedroom with an en suite shower room under the eaves. The re-designed master bedroom benefits from a large skylight which opens up the space and minimises the sense of enclosure, an exposed brick chimney and a translucent glazed panel which provides light and outlook to the new en suite under the eaves.

LONDON PIED-À-TERRE MAIDA VALE, LONDON 2008 ⁄ 09
The split-level flat within a 5-storey Victorian conversion in Maida Vale was purchased by a professional couple working in media whose brief was to refurbish the ageing flat and provide access to a new roof terrace. Using the flat as their pied-a-terre during the week, their focus was on daily modern conveniences as well as a small but elegant location to entertain their colleagues and friends from time to time. This proposal organizes the public areas of the flat toward to the top of the house to take advantage of the balcony and substantial natural light with the private areas beneath.

KENSAL GREEN GARDEN EXTENSION LONDON 2010 ⠄ 11
The project comprises a rear and side garden extension and refurbishment of this ground floor flat in Kensal Green. The programme of the house has been re-organised to accommodate an open plan kitchen/dining/living area facing onto the garden. The extensions are constructed primarily of glass, to benefit from the southern exposure of the garden. Original features such as the brick garden boundary walls have been retained to capture the sense of heritage of the house. Due to height differences between the existing interior and the garden, the open plan living space is steps down from the main house and presents a seamless level between interior and exterior, creating a closer relationship between home and garden. The new extension augments the living space of a growing family and modernises their home.

GEORGIAN TERRACE HOUSE IN COLLABORATION WITH LORENZO VIOLA, LONDON 2007 ⁄ 2008
The owner of this Georgian terraced house required the conversion of two stacked maisonettes into a 4-storey home for a family of 5. The gut renovation involved the reorganisation of the uses into a coherent whole, a complete re-partitioning and fitting specialised built-in furnishings to a high quality standard. The design solution rationalises the circulation and creates a gradient of privacy between the levels, with the entry programmed for formal entertaining all the way to the top level, devoted to the most personal family functions. As the client’s brief involved including a collection of “mid-century modern” furniture, the design language utilises a common mid-century motif of floating planes, open plan space and built-in furnishings to distinguish zones for living.

The refurbishment of a loft conversion in Maida Vale, London included a full reorganisation and re-partitioning of internal space as well as the design of a roof terrace with improved access. The client is the owner of Londonbased fashion advertising firm and required both a comfortable refuge as well as a place to entertain his large social circle. The design incorporates an open plan living/dining top floor space with access to the roof terrace via a modern, open-tread staircase and two-metre glazed retractable roof light.

The lower floor provides a homier environment with a generous entry foyer to a guest room and bath, office and master bedroom suite and balcony which take advantage of communal garden views.

FERRARA JEWISH MUSEUM IN COLLABORATION WITH IGLAUER CASTELLI ARCHITECTS — FERRARA, ITALY 2010
The architectural approach pursued on the project for a new National Museum of Italian Judaism and the Holocaust is based on a narrative interpretation of Jewish culture. The new addition to the museum is composed of a conceptual diagram that became the foundation for the design process. After analysis of historical themes, concepts of “Duality” and the tension between positive and negative aspects of Jewish history, “Journey” in its articulation of departure, arrival and loss; “Language”, and “Tradition” were chosen as key themes which inform the architecture. This led the team to express this tension in formal choice, both in the composition of the volumes and the organization of the museum.

50 Emphasis within Jewish culture on language and text led to the use of letters that make up some of the selected keywords as “building materials� for the volumes of the museum. The letters are used not as obvious forms, but as a framework for the composition of the central volumes and void spaces, emphasizing the sculptural and communicative value of the letters themselves. As the visitor moves through the museum the composition of letter volumes reflect a multiplicity of meanings.

This proposal was created for an invited competition in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. The site forms part of a nature preserve near to the coastline on the island. The proposal provides both a “mirador” or viewing platform over the nature preserve as well as a civic platform for community gatherings. Situated along the ridgeline of the city, objectives of the project are to reconnect citizens with the value of nature, to nurture an ecological consciousness, as well as to provide a node of connection for social activity.

IN COLLABORATION WITH SUSANNE GERSTBERGER MONOLAB / TORSTEN GRESENS CHATEAUROUX, FRANCE 2005 The station area of Chateauroux is characterized by a multitude of different urban interfaces and surrounding urban conditions. To the north lies a dense and heterogeneous inner city development and to the south a mixed scale housing district, including single family dwellings and apartment blocks. Planted into that small scale housing district a large-scale supermarket with a huge parking lot provides the only public open space in the entire area. This diverse urban setting demands a coherent spatial approach that works equally well at micro and macro scale, and which integrates the entire site into one reconcilable and redefined innercity location. This holistic approach challenges uniform repetition, standardization and strict determination of space. Instead the complex relations of the site are instrumentalized for developing new affiliations and continuities that appeal to all the senses. As a result of interlinked thinking, this urban intervention unlocks the site’s potential as a connective and transitional urban device by exploiting its quality as a transportation node. It provides the sought after high quality open spaces by relieving it from the restrains of the railway tracks and overcomes the split in the urban fabric.

TALLINN WATERFRONT
IN COLLABORATION WITH SUSANNE GERSTBERGER MONOLAB / TORSTEN GRESENS TALLINN, ESTONIA 2007 This project tackles urban issues of extending boundaries and breaking down barriers and preconceptions. The project proposes a regeneration of the Tallinn waterfront, historically a military base. The site becomes the canvas for engagement with the public by way of a visual and spatial amenity, in which a sense of place results from the close relationship of the site to its surroundings and the proposal’s particular spatial organization. The intervention fosters the redevelopment of the adjoining areas by sponsoring a new destination and character for an otherwise neglected and underdeveloped area of the city, the waterfront. It provides a strong identity that acts as a catalyst for future developments.

On an urban site in the southern Chinese city of Wuhan, Space Agency was commissioned to design a 2,500 square metre developer’s showroom. The showroom consolidates the marketing operations of a regional developer and serves as an exhibition space for new developments. The 3-storey building comprises meeting rooms, open plan office space, operations areas, kitchen, reception and exhibition hall. The design concept is based around the image of a chinese lantern which represents the symbol of celebration and provides a beacon for potential clients.

NASH XLEB BAKERIES MOSCOW, RUSSIA 2010/12
The bakery brand Le Pain Quotidien has opened a new line of bakery cafes in Russia. Space Agency was commissioned to assist the company in developing an interior brand identity for the chain of shops to be rolled out across Moscow. The brief was to design the shops in a “factory-chic� style, incorporating industrial fittings with a sense of warmth and comfort. The solution has been to introduce pared-down natural materials such as brick, timber and ceramic tiles combined in a simple way. Copper metal accents and colourful objects provide warmth and interest. Focal objects reference traditional production methods. The result achieved is both modern and inviting.

Il Patio is a large chain of Italian restaurants in Russia. It is owned by the leading casual dining operator in Russia, Rosinter, who oversee a broad portfolio of brands. Space Agency was appointed to develop a prototype design for a boutique Italian gourmet concession within the Il Patio restaurants that offers diners the opportunity to bring their experience of Italian dining home with them. The concessions are to be located within the restaurants and display an array of imported Italian delicatessen foods. The design for the boutiques focuses on the idea of abundance and celebrates gourmet food through an attractive display of well-packaged and presented speciality items.

X5 SUPERMARKETS MOSCOW, RUSSIA 2012
The X5 Retail Group is Russia’s largest food retailer. Currently X5 operates several retail formats, from convenience store to hypermarket. Space Agency was engaged to develop an up-market variation on an existing successful format, the Perekrestok Express minimarket. The client was looking to capture a greater market share by appealing to higher-end consumers, property owners and developers. The development of the Perekrestok ‘Green’ brand includes an improved palette of materials throughout the store as well as cosmetically improved Perekrestok fittings, through the addition of graphic panels. Strong graphic branding is given to the space as customers enter and exit. The entrance sequence is filled with attractive and brightly coloured products and promotional event spaces to attract custom. Clear sight lines are created throughout the minimarket to draw customers through the store by improving legibility of aisles and signage. This implementation of a linear sequence of displays also leads to an increase in shelf space.
