Space Agency is an integrated design firm based in London. The company is a chartered member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the directors are registered with the Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD) and the British Architects Registration Board (ARB). We enjoy strong connections with academia and the company’s directors place considerable focus on research and innovation, holding teaching positions at UK universities. We believe that innovation comes from redefining boundaries between disciplines, promoting a culture of interchange that inspires creative thinking. With a specialism in environmental graphics, wayfinding and branding, Space Agency operates at the crossroads of graphic design, architecture and interior design. We see design as a single discipline practiced across a spectrum of scales. At each of these scales, it is space which is the defining agent. The way space is organised influences perception, patterns of movement, occupation and social vitality. Space Agency uses
established, research based methods to forecast the global patterns of movement within the built environment. These tools reveal the underlying dynamics of how people are influenced by their environment. This process informs our design solutions and helps us to choreograph people's experience of space. Our unique approach is to embed graphic communication seamlessly into the architecture, landscape. This informational layer provides a human scale interface between architecture and user experience, facilitating transitions between experiences. By revealing information progressively at the moments when the user needs it, spaces become intelligible and intuitive to navigate. Graphic communication is used to promote identity of place, incorporating aspects of each site’s unique history into the visual language. The overall result is a wayfinding, branding and environmental graphics approach which is creative, detailed to the highest architectural standards, and which contributes to a holistic design.

Space Agency was engaged as a consultant to Zaha Hadid Architects for a large mixeduse masterplan in Cairo, comprised of 18 office towers, a 5-star hotel, 5 retail sectors, a central public space and underground parking. The central spine of this masterplan is to function as an oasis, full of vibrant activity and a night time economy. In order to achieve this “buzz”, a strong, direct and convenient central axis of movement must be emphasised through wayfinding and signage. A visually and physically direct and accessible central core of movement at surface level links the retail uses into a chain, serving to activate natural movement through the heart of the development. The primary approach for most users will be vehicular, through the basement parking. This type of approach is like a subterranean animal’s experience of popping-up and trying to decipher where it finds itself. Environmental graphics and directional wayfinding markers from the basement up facilitate orientation and picture-building for first time users and enhance the experience of getting where one wants to go.

Electrum car park wayfinding
Long walls extend from the office tower cores in the basement car park. These walls obstruct views across the basement and create large surfaces of concrete. They therefore present a prime canvas for vibrant wayfinding graphics which animate the basement space and provide locational information. As visitors circulate through the basement parking compartments looking for parking, a key consideration will be finding a parking space near their destination. These walls can therefore provide building
identification, with directional signage subtly leading visitors toward their immediate destination, the lifts to ground level. Around the lift core, these wall displays serve to remind visitors of the zone they are in before they ascend to the ground level “Delta�. The colors of the wall graphics match the coloration of the parking spaces. All graphics will be applied to the wall with a custom made stencil. Reflective visibility is introduced by adding a metallic line through the graphics.

The design of the lift car signage conveys a notion of upward movement, reflecting the vertical progression through the different levels and supporting the visitor’s intuition of moving upward. Its design is of a minimalistic elegance and ties seamlessly into the vector-based parking signage elements.

The design for the office directories is conceived from the projectwide notion of converging and bifurcating lines. Within this language the directory structure mirrors the primary routes of circulation in the building, branching out into two floor plates from a central atrium zone. As a stylized and abstracted tree, this “trunk” forms the permanent, unchanging backbone of the directories. The tenant signage will take into account the need for frequent replacement as the tenants change. Split into branches for each

floor in the building, the directory can accomodate up to 3 tenants per wing. Tenants within the current wing are listed; tenants within the opposite wing shown in a subordinate position. Not only does the tree reference the petrified forest upon which the Stone Towers are to be construced, but it is also a symbol productivity, as trees bear fruit. Stone Towers is to create a new economic centre in Cairo and the tree symbol is at the centre of that activity expressing vitality and abundance.

Wayfinding through the central public space or “Delta” is facilitated by illuminated metallic bands that lie flush with the landscape paving, marking the way to various destinations throughout the masterplan. Building names, retail destinations, feature gardens and retail zones are etched into these directional vectors, subtly leading the pedestrian toward their destination. By day, wayfinding bands follow the landscape articulation and create a subtle device to facilitate orientation and provide information and interest. At night time the luminous striations will accentuate and underscore the compositional pattern of the landscape. These can both enhance the night time atmosphere in the garden, hotel and entertainment areas, as well as aid in wayfinding in an otherwise disorienting environment. As visual permeability across the site to the parking lobbies is obstructed by the retail forms, this type of

wayfinding device can support a greater feeling of orientation and safety and can serve to illuminate the footpath.

Within the retail zones, signage and maps are required to orient the visitor toward the destinations they seek. Retail shops, restaurants and services are listed in a very simple type of directory, integrated into the landscape as a horizontal wayfinding element. Importantly, this signage enumerates not only the shops, services and destinations within the zone in which it is located, but also lists all of the shops and restaurants in the other zones. This type of directory is essential in a shopping area. It also clarifies for the visitor that
the development is comprised of 5 zones which are identified by 5 different metals and locates the visitor within this continuum. These elements are tightly integrated with the landscape and conceived by pulling up individual strips of paving to form the signage element. While providing the required legibility and directional information, this is very minimal and streamlined signage avoids cluttering of the space. It also provides an opportunity to integrate low-level lighting.

Space Agency was engaged to develop a wayfinding strategy and to design signage for a Science and Technology professional campus in northwest Riyadh dedicated to scientists of all fields. The objective of the wayfinding strategy is to promote knowledge-sharing and cross-pollination of ideas through the spatial layout of the campus and movement framework. This is achieved through a route layout which encourages scientists of different sectors to cross paths both inside buildings and within public space. The amalgamation of signage, seating and lighting clusters within public space facilitate information-sharing in central gathering spaces. The design concept for the signage draws on influences from Arabic contributions to the advancement of science and mathematics - geometry in particular.

Layered floor signage, derived from the dynamic motherboard forms of the landscape and facades, is found at key decision points in the public space where a change of direction is required. Within the masterplan there are several key junctions of major routes where directional indications toward sectors and buildings provides necessary orientation. Lines emanating from these assemblages of tabs point in the direction of travel.
Once a line of travel is established, these lines taper off, rather than continuing as a prescriptive route. Visitors continue on their journey until another key junction, where another wayfinding device will pick up again to enhance orientation. As visitors approach their destination, they can use the divergent wayfinding strips in the paving of the laboratory atria to determine which wing of the building to approach.

Laboratory directory
The visitor arrives at the building atrium following the wayfinding bands underfoot. Here the visitor’s view is framed within the linear atrium space, with the elevated bridges capturing the foreground. A building tenant directory is located directly opposite the reception area, integrated into the sun-shading louvers. Here the language of linear strips that has been used throughout the graphic communication at KACST, inhabits the built form as well. The louvers twist to form the tab
graphics which hold information about the specific labs and groups that occupy the building. The directory encompasses information for both wings of the building. Once inside, a directory is positioned on the lift core at each floor level which identifies the organisations occupying this floor. Labs, amenities and organisational groups are included within this directory. Arriving at floor level, the visitor will finally reach their ultimate destination, a particular lab or office.

Space Agency was appointed to develop a wayfinding and signage strategy for the main entrance multi-storey car park and forecourt to the new Terminal 2 at London Heathrow Airport. The forecourt is the primary approach to the new terminal, and for arriving passengers it is one of the first impressions after landing. An intricate system of routes between London Underground, Heathrow Express and multiple vehicular and bus drop-offs makes navigation complex. A clear and simple wayfinding strategy is therefore paramount for the client. The overarching concept of the wayfinding strategy was to emphasize the sense of alighting, the drama of leaving the ground, all the while providing clear and legible directions and avoiding clutter.

The visitor arrives at Heathrow Terminal 2 via a flyover ramp adjoining a multi-storey car park. The car park is separated from the terminal by a forecourt in order to provide a “bomb blast buffer zone�. The departing passenger alights at the open-air top deck of the car park, aware of the sky above and the journey ahead. The

passenger is drawn toward the terminal via a bold but elegant black glass entry portal which greets the passenger with a “Welcome to Terminal 2” message. Just beyond the portal lies a key juncture, where the passenger flows split toward different check-in zones. Flight information displays guiding the passenger toward the right
zone are visible on approach, so that passengers scanning the horizon can move swiftly through this decision point and “pre-sort”, mitigating congestion. A subtle graphic pattern which conveys the wonder of flight has been designed to wrap the lift cores which vertically transport passengers toward the terminal.

The bakery brand Le Pain Quotidien is opening a new line of bakery cafes in Russia. Space Agency was commissioned to assist the company in developing an interior brand identity for the chain of shops to be rolled out across Russia. The brief was to design the shops in a “factory-chic’ style, incorporating industrial fittings with a sense of warmth and comfort. The solution has been to introduce pared-down natural materials such as brick, timber and ceramic tiles combined in a simple way. Copper accents and colourful objects provide warmth and intertest. Focal objects reference traditional production methods. The result is both modern and inviting. The initial project involved developing a prototype shop and 'brand elements'. Subsequently a series of more than 20 cafes, kiosks and concessions have been designed in alignment with this original concept, adapting to different sites and local conditions. The project continues to evolve as commercial partners come on board and the brand is modified to accomodate new products and retail typologies.

Il Patio is a large chain of Italian restaurants in Russia. It is owned by the leading casual dining operator in Russia, Rosinter, who oversee a broad portfolio of brands. Space Agency was commissioned to develop a prototype design for a boutique Italian gourmet concession within the Il Patio restaurants that offers diners the opportunity to bring their experience of Italian dining home with them. The concessions are located within the restaurants and display an array of imported Italian delicatessen foods. The design for the boutiques focuses on the idea of abundance and celebrates gourmet food through an attractive display of well-packaged and presented speciality items.
