EDITOR from the

STEVEN HICKS | SENIOR EDITOR, SPACECOAST LIVING | STEVE@SCBMARKETING.COM

I

’m still the new guy around here. Most of you have been reading SCL longer than I’ve been involved with it. I really enjoy working with the month-tomonth themes the magazine takes; Mother’s Day, then Men We Admire. The Model Search issue, then the Wedding issue. Our Pets issue, then The Arts. As senior editor, I sometimes try to tie them together a bit, like how the wonderful paintings of pets in our August pets issue led us into the arts issue in September. This month we have a very natural progression, with October’s Cancer Survivors’ issue to this month’s Giving Back edition. Last month, some of the local support organizations were highlighted, and now we recognize individuals who’ve worked tirelessly to support those organizations and others not yet so prominent. We are truly blessed by the breadth of services available to us all when needed, and for those who work to keep them funded and running. If this month’s stories encourage you to get involved at a higher level, that’s great. Or maybe you’ll just consider contributing to one that calls to your heart. That’s equally as appreciated. In Charlotte and Tom Wienckoski’s profile, you’ll read that their son, who “was probably about 10 years old at the time,” had a hand in getting sleeping bags to a couple of homeless people on that cold Florida evening years ago. When our children grow up in an environment of giving like this, they accept it as normal and likely become giving adults themselves. For as proud as Charlotte and Tom are of this event they’ve grown, they are also quite the proud parents to see their children giving back within their communities as well, possibly the single greatest reward for their work.

Michael

Carbonaro

By Steven Hicks

Known for his original hidden camera magic series, “The Carbonaro Effect,” on truTV, Michael Carbonaro has been a performing magician since his youth. He went on to study experimental theater at New York University with aspirations of entertaining audiences through a variety of theatrical mediums, including hidden-camera magic, which he later showcased frequently on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” A trickster at heart, Carbonaro performs inventive tricks on unsuspecting members of the public who are unaware that he is a magician. Whether posing as a coffee shop barista, museum curator, or seemingly unremarkable store clerk in the real world, Carbonaro’s illusions – along with his absurd, matter-of-fact explanations – leave people bewildered and families at home laughing out loud. Carbonaro’s extensive list of accolades includes Magician of the Year, bestowed upon him by the Academy of Magical Arts in 2015. In 2016, he was the inaugural recipient of the Copperfield Prize, which recognizes an individual for elevating the art of magic. SpaceCoast Living had just a few minutes with Carbonaro to discuss the tour, magic, and how much he loves coming to Florida! 22 :

spac ec oa st l iv in g

SpaceCoast Living: We are so excited that you’re coming to perform in Florida, especially at The King Center!

Michael Carbonaro: I'm stoked. I have to tell you, one of

the questions people always ask is, "What's your favorite place to perform?" And I know this sounds crazy, because I love my hometown and I love New York, I love California, but man, the crowds in Florida, they're so good. They're the best. We just loving coming back. I don't know what it is; everyone is generally happier or something. They're just so joyful and giving and wanting to play every time we've toured there. So, I always look forward to Florida.

SpaceCoast Living: You're bouncing around Florida; you're in Orlando and then Alabama and then here again. You're all over the place!

Michael Carbonaro: …and I love it. It's been such a treat

to get out on the road. My first love was performing live. My venture into magic really began with a love of horror movies and monsters and special effects, and I talk about this in the show. I share a little bit about my adventure into magic, but I don't think anybody really knows what they're in for when they come to see the live show. I love, dare I say, taking advantage of that. Some real diehard fans of the show can't stop wondering if it's done with camera tricks and actors. And then they see it right in front of their face. I can almost see the relief, and that’s the ultimate joy. SpaceCoast Living: Does this feel full-circle with the stage shows, starting out doing magic on a small scale and then going really big-time with “The Tonight Show” and your other appearances, and now coming back to stage shows?

Michael Carbonaro: I do love the more intimate

venue, talking to the adults on one level and the kids on another. It was a groove that I really developed as a young performing magician, finding my voice. It's a back and forth with the audience, bringing people up to play. It's all very improvisational because I don't know where it's going to go, what people are going to say, how it's going to happen with each new person. Every night's different. It's a real thrill ride for everybody. SpaceCoast Living: How do you keep a straight face when people in front of you are completely in awe or completely know what they've seen just cannot happen?

Michael Carbonaro: It's funny you say that. When I'm out

there, I just don't know who's going to walk up sometimes, I never know what they're going to be like. So, when I get someone totally baffled, I'm thinking, "I want this to win. I want them get it. I want it to work." But to be honest with you, when I watch the video back later, I ask myself the exact same question. ◆

Michael Carbonaro will showcase his bizarre antics and mind-blowing magic through his highlyacclaimed national theater tour, “Michael Carbonaro Live!” when it comes to The King Center on December 5.

Design Tips - Get Your Home

Fall Ready

By Bringing the Season Inside

By Mallorie Ingram

With summer over and cooler months on the horizon, it’s that time of the year again to welcome the sweet aroma of fall. Although cozy fires, fleece blankets, hot cider and the like are classic seasonal delights, typically they don’t complement our local, warm climate. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible to welcome the season into your home with some unique fall favorites. Nothing screams fall more than carved pumpkins and baskets of colorful leaves scattered about, but did you know there’s another way to make each room pop this season? Some of the most original design tricks are found at your local grocery and home improvement stores. Start by taking a trip to your nearest marketplace.

24 :

spac ec oa st l iv in g

Your Shopping list:

Bag of apples Jar of cinnamon sticks Package of votive candles Carve out a small area at the top of the apple, place the candle inside, and arrange the cinnamon sticks and apples together in a decorative basket or bowl. Voila! Your custom-made centerpiece just added the finishing touch to one of the tables in your home.

Let’s talk florals. The quickest and easiest way to get your home fall-ready with decor sure to impress starts by incorporating floral arrangements in and around your home. Even the smallest addition of potted mums and pansies paired with some classic seasonal pieces, such as pumpkins and gourds, can make your entrance something to talk about. Better yet, bring some of those items inside to create a fall ambiance in your foyer. Don’t forget to add a few floral vases throughout your space to set the tone of each room. Try displaying flowers with warm tones, such as sunflowers. These fall favorites will immediately dress up a room when displayed nicely. Last, but certainly not least, are fall foods. How does food tie in with fall decor? It’s simple. Even the smallest hint and aroma of pumpkin cookies fresh out of the oven can infiltrate your home and set the mood for fall. No matter how warm it may be outside, go crank up your air conditioner and start decorating for fall before the season is over! ◆

from the heart

American Heart Association’s

Heart Walk Story As the participants of the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk put shoes to the pavement, they walk with a purpose: raising money to combat the county’s number one and number five killers, heart disease and stroke. According to the American Heart Association, more than one million walkers will participate in the 2018 Heart Walk, which has nearly 350 events nationwide. Brevard County’s Heart Walk will be at The Avenue, February 24 at 8 a.m. Walkers have the option of walking one mile or three. This event’s goal is $100,000, with $14,810 raised as of September. Many organizations that have supported the Heart Walk over the years, such as Wuesthoff Health System. Wuesthoff has been involved with the event over the past two decades, as the organization is highly committed to the cause, given the severity of the disease and the work the American Heart Association has exerted in Brevard County. “We’ve always been committed and will continue to be committed to give back to the community and this is one of those ways where we feel like we cannot only support a great organization that brings money back into Brevard County through charitable works, but through the works that we do every day with our talented physicians and staff,” Steward Health Care President Andy Romaine said. For Parrish Medical Center, which has also been involved in the Heart Walk for many years, the event is an opportunity for the organization to continue to raise awareness about the important role an active lifestyle plays with regard to heart and cardiovascular health, as well as raise awareness about the phenomenal role the AHA plays in funding leading edge research that has served to advance treatment options for heart disease and stroke. “But more importantly, the Heart Walk is always fun,” said Parrish Vice President of Operations Jeremy Bradford. “It provides an engaging way for communities, families, friends and colleagues to come together, get outdoors and have fun together. You don’t have to be an athlete or a marathon runner to reap heart-healthy rewards. Walking, biking, swimming, or simply playing on the playground for just 20 to 30 minutes a day goes a long way to supporting a healthy heart.” ◆

Forging

Connections

By Meaghan Branham

Walking into jewelry designer Peter Indorf ’s Melbourne workshop is like stepping into a jewelry lover’s paradise. Original sketches and photos of finished products adorn the walls, while one-of-a-kind pieces arranged beautifully in a display case sit close by. It is immediately evident to any visitor that Indorf is extremely passionate about his work, eager to answer any questions, give honest advice, and share a wealth of knowledge accumulated through his over 40 years of experience. In the interest of sharing this passion and expertise with his community, Indorf is even planning a series of seminars based out of this very workshop, covering everything from diamonds, colored gemstones, pearls, history and lore, to the latest trends. This foray into community involvement is nothing new for Indorf. Beginning in 1976 with his storefronts in the New Haven area, and continuing through his move to Melbourne in 2016, he has always had a passion for local causes. While in Connecticut, his work with organizations like the Shoreline Arts Alliance and the Professional Business Association, combined with his reputation as a skilled and knowledgeable business owner, solidified his prominent position in the community. “One of the things I’ve always liked to do is partner with the various nonprofits whose missions I think are important, and sometimes underserved. I’ve always supported the arts, and any causes that benefit children,” he explained. Now working out of Brevard County, he is eager to learn from his new neighbors, and share his talents with them as well. Already he has begun working actively with the Brevard Cultural Alliance, as well as taking on a role with the Chamber. Most recently he accepted the role of a sponsor at the Brevard 28 :

spac ec oa st l iv in g

Schools Foundation’s Take Stock in Children Reach for the Stars Gala, held on September 30th. In addition to being a sponsor, he offered two incredible items for the live raffle, including a breathtaking amethyst, paired with a $1500 gift certificate for a custom piece to be created with it. For the silent auction he offered a Jewelry Box Review with a $100 coupon. His active involvement comes as no surprise once one has met with him. Indorf is an extremely creative individual who loves his work and is passionate about finding new channels to share it, as well as new ways to give back to his community. His seminars are just the latest of these endeavors. Working with a few individuals at a time, in sessions offered both during the day and evening, Indorf hopes to be able to provide helpful insight to all who attend and are looking to learn—from those of us who are simply admirers of beautiful pieces and want to expand our knowledge, to discerning collectors. Indorf looks forward to sharing his professional and technical know-how, as well as the stories his jewelry tells. “I’ve picked up a lot of stories over the years” Indorf laughed. It is this collection of stories that Indorf is most enthusiastic to share and expand upon while in Melbourne. Any community is enriched when its members contribute their uniquely cultivated experiences and knowledge, and embrace those of others with excitement. Fostering connections through endeavors like Indorf ’s seminars means exciting partnerships are forged, and in his case, beautiful jewelry usually follows.

HOMELESS

H I G H FOUNDATION BY STEVEN HICKS

T

he Homeless High Foundation brings the holidays to Brevard County’s homeless high school students with gifts of clothing, shoes, transportation [bikes and skateboards], school supplies and something a little extra to make the gift more personal like video games, basketballs, footballs, bracelets and cosmetics.

Tammy Burley started Homeless High in November 2013 after hearing about a junior attending Satellite High School who was living in her car in the parking lot of a nearby shopping center. Burley was stunned and in awe. Homeless and still making it to class? Homeless and still making the grades? What determination. What character. How inspiring. There had to be some way she could help her. In the two weeks after that discovery, Burley found more homeless students with the help of the Satellite High School staff. She raised over $2,000 and delivered holiday gifts to the high school front office for those students. That year Homeless High’s “Secret Santa” helped 12 students with gas money, toiletries, food, clothes, shoes and a special personal gift to make their Christmas special. Burley wanted them to know they were special and that the community, her community, our community and their community was there to help.

did you know?

BRE VARD CO UNT Y

is "home"to almost 2,000 HOMELESS K-12 STUDENTS In 2014, Burley was captivated by the story of a sophomore student who had lost his mother and was left couch hopping to have a roof over his head and be safe. He had been temporarily staying with different friends and relatives. In 2015, Burley found a girl living in a car with her aunt in Palm Bay with help from the community. The most amazing aspect of these stories is that these kids stayed in school. They mustered up the strength and determination to change the direction of their lives. Burley was amazed that these young adults were overcoming such obstacles, yet still driving their future forward. On their own, without their parents. Brevard County is “home” to almost 2,000 homeless students in grades K-12. The statistics for homeless high school age children is difficult to determine. Many hide their situation fearing a social stigma that comes with being homeless or fear being taken into the social services system. Burley realized this age group doesn’t have a charitable organization in the area to champion their cause. After several years of hearing story after story and trying her best to make a difference, Burley decided to turn this passion into something others could take part in. That’s when she decided to make Homeless High “real.” She wanted to share the opportunity for others to express their support, and the Homeless High Foundation was born. Burley says, “I work full time, more than full time, and my job often includes travel. Keeping the Foundation going and moving forward has been challenging. I have a fantastic group of friends, and my husband and kids have been fantastic support and helpers.” Burley tells us that her employer, Cisco Systems, has a program for employees who want to give back. “We are given 40 hours of paid leave to support our community throughout the calendar year. I use all of that and more.” ◆ For more information visit: www.youcaring.com/homelesshighfoundation-690431 or email homeless-high@outlook.com november 2 017 : 35

s your cup half full or half empty? If you look at the negative in every changing situation in your life, then you are looking as if your cup is half empty. It is much healthier to look at these changes in a half-full or optimistic manner. Being optimistic about changes in your life will help you look into and find the positive outcomes because we tend to find what we are looking for.

Life changing events, such as losing a job, can be a big blow. Looking at this as positive can be very difficult. Obviously, a person who loses their job will need to find a new one to replace the loss of the income. You can look at this as an opportunity to find the job of your dreams or, at least, something that will lead you to it. By keeping an optimistic attitude, you will be able to respond more creatively to challenges like this.

What is your

WealthConfidence?

Having a WealthPlan can improve your WealthConfidence, especially when faced with difficult situations. That’s because when life throws you a curve ball, you will have a better idea about what it will take to stay on course and be more optimistic about what comes next. Losing your job can be a hard thing. But with a WealthPlan, you know how long you can search for your next job, how much you need to make to stay on track and where you are going to get the cash flow to live on in the meantime.

Foundation for Success EFSC Foundation is providing more student scholarships

T

he future of our community looks like Rachel Williams. A mother of four, she and her husband struggled to get by on one income as she stayed home with the children and put in more hard work pursing a dream: studying at Eastern Florida State College to become a teacher.

A scholarship through the Eastern Florida State College Foundation is helping make that happen, opening a door for Williams that otherwise might have slammed shut. “The scholarship is a much needed and greatly appreciated godsend, and has become essential in my goal to one day become a teacher,” she said. “I can think of no higher calling than to help mold our children into the successful adult citizens they have the potential to become. I thank the foundation for its generosity.” Williams is among hundreds of students receiving scholarships from the foundation as increasing donations from the community are providing students more financial help. For instance, the foundation awarded $353,000 in scholarships to 344 students this fall. That’s 115 more students and twice the amount of money awarded during the same period last year. The past year has also seen 10 new scholarships created for students in fields such as health care and aviation and those pursuing general studies. In all, the foundation has awarded $3 million in scholarships the past five years as it grows along with the college, which has added 40 new programs that include 17 highly popular bachelor’s degree tracks. “Thanks to the generosity of our community, the foundation is helping more students get the education they need to improve their lives and have successful careers,” said Foundation Director Jennie Kriete. “But the college is continuing to grow and with it a need for more scholarships. foundation are so important, with every dollar donated going to students.” The foundation’s annual “Come Grow with Us” appeal is currently underway with the goal of raising $50,000 for the Titan Fund by Dec. 31. (easternflorida.edu/go/titanfund) It also has launched several new initiatives to increase donations. They include a renewed Alumni Association with nearly 500 Eastern Florida graduates joining during its first year.

There have also been barbeque competitions, tailgate parties, golf tournaments and a recent “Titan’s Toast to Health” at the college’s new Health Sciences Institute on the Melbourne campus. The growing support is paying off in meaningful ways. “If it wasn’t for that help, I don’t know if I would have been able to afford all of the tools necessary to earn my degree. I am deeply grateful for the scholarship,” said Williams. Then there’s Raquel Magalhaes, who said a scholarship gave her an important emotional boost. “Having someone believe I deserve a scholarship is really motivational. It has helped me to realize that all the work and effort I put into learning is even more valuable than I thought,” she said. “I promise I will make this opportunity count and do my best to make sure the foundation knows its choice was the right one.” A scholarship was also a game changer for Natasha Diaz. "Nursing has always been my dream. Now I can focus on my studies without having to worry about a financial burden at the end,” she said. “Thanks to the scholarship, I was able to purchase supplemental books to aid in my studies. It also provided me with funds for transportation.” Said Kriete, “Behind every scholarship we award are stories like these. That’s why every donation, big or small, is important, and why we need the community’s help to make the dream of a college education come true.” For more information on the foundation, visit easternflorida.edu/foundation

Planting for a Successful Harvest Advice from Michelle Tafoya of Rockledge Gardens

I Michelle Tafoya Check out the University of Florida's IFAS website (http://ifas.ufl.edu) for a useful gardening calendar for Central Florida. 40 : spac ec oa st l iv in g

n Florida, we can pretty much plant and harvest vegetables year ‘round without worry. But we do have seasons for vegetable planting. Michelle Tafoya of Rockledge Gardens tells us, “Generally, September is the time to start seeds for your ‘cool season’ crops. Start your seeds in September, and most of the plants will grow for a month or two before they start producing fruit.” Just about all the vegetables that most of us are used to, like broccoli, cabbages, kale and collards, germinate best around 75 degrees and are considered “cool season” crops. The common “warm season” plants are tomatoes, peppers, beans and okra. They germinate better in temperatures warmer than 75 degrees.

Many gardeners turn to “succession planting” for continuous crops throughout the growing season. This involves sewing seeds in intervals depending on how long the specific plant takes to reach maturity. Tafoya tells us, “Do realize that the growing conditions described on the back of the seed packets are often tailored towards gardens up north. We plant when it's already too cold up there.” Succession planting generally means that you're using the same group of crops, but waiting about two weeks between plantings so that they're continuously rotating out. “Lettuce is planted and managed this way because you go through it like crazy and it only takes a couple of weeks to mature. Succession planting keeps you in fresh lettuce all season long.” Tafoya says. As for how to set up your garden, Tafoya says, “A raised bed or container garden is best. Florida soil is full of nematodes, so plant into a raised bed.” Container gardens are even easier, because you can grow anything you want, as long as it's in a large enough container. Certain larger plants, like cabbages and broccoli, will need larger containers, such as seven-gallon pots. Herbs can grow anywhere you want. They're very versatile and they'll usually grow throughout the year. “For herbs, it's a lot easier just to buy starter plants from nurseries,” she suggests. When it comes to the soil for raised beds, use a very loose, coarse mix. “Raised bed soil” is now available at many garden centers. Or you can make your own; it's easy, and there are instructions online, Tafoya says. How about fertilizers? “Vegetables generally want consistent fertilizing. You can use organic or conventional fertilizers, but it's better to use organic with slow release; it feeds the soil and is generally a lot easier to apply. Fertilize and water consistently and you will get fast growing crops. If you don't, you’ll stunt growth, which can cause plants and fruits to become woody and bitter,” Tafoya explains. Certain crops will need extra nutrients (tomatoes and peppers need extra calcium) to prevent blossom end rot. Try liquid seaweed to provide micronutrients to plants lacking organic fertilizers. And lastly, harvest early. A lot of folks tend to leave their plants in the garden bed long after they're mature. The key is to sow a lot of seeds, and rotate with something healthy as a backup for pastmature plants or plants that simply just didn't grow well. ◆

Have you been warned to not eat fruits and vegetables grown with reclaimed water? That’s not entirely true. With a little care, like washing the exterior of the fruit, those fruits and vegetables are completely safe! Tafoya tells us, “The plant itself has the biological ability to exclude bacteria from inside its fruit. So, provided it's not sprayed and then picked right off the vine or tree and eaten, it’s fine. But for leafy green vegetables, microgreens and edible greens like lettuce, the pores of those leaves can trap a lot of harmful bacteria. I wouldn’t use reclaimed water directly on those; use drip irrigation. But if you wash that tomato, pepper, orange, lime or grapefruit well, you’ll be just fine.” november 2 017 : 41

COVER STORY

To m & C h a r l o t t e

Wienckoski T

he Wienckoski’s passions in the community are children and homelessness. Tom and Charlotte have been lucky enough to be involved in quite a few very good causes from Candlelighters, to the Children's Hunger Project, to Resurrection Ranch, to Daily Bread, and with Ascension Church. Tom Wienckoski says, “One thing Brevard has, really two things, it has some very worthwhile causes. And in addition to that, it has some tremendous people that are willing to jump up, step forward and help with these causes.” Charlotte Wienckoski tends to be most involved with Candlelighters. And her husband? “Anything to do with homelessness,” he says.

But when we asked for specifics, Tom Wienckoski immediately wanted to tell this story… “We've been doing this event for about 15 years now and it's called Christmas in a Pack. Every year, usually the Sunday before Christmas, we go down to the park behind the Melbourne library and we pass out about 400 backpacks. We also have sleeping bags, we have tents, some bikes and fishing poles as well. The backpacks are filled with things that people who are homeless might need daily. A backpack is convenient to them to keep their things together so we add flashlights, dry socks, sweatshirts, jackets and radios for them. “It's interesting the way this started. We were driving east on New Haven Avenue in Melbourne. My son was probably about 10 years old at the time. It was dark and very cold. We saw a lady who appeared to be in her sixties huddled up under blankets on a step. We went to a sporting goods store and bought two sleeping bags. When we handed her the bags, she immediately ran around the corner to give one to a friend. It was very thoughtful given her situation. I told her we’d come back tomorrow and bring her whatever she needed, and she said, ‘I can't tomorrow night. We're going to a backpack handout.’ We went to that event the next day -- it was being run by Michael Bennett. Michael told us he’d been homeless, literally sleeping under bridges for about 10 years. But he met his wife at a VA soup kitchen, got married, moved into a small home, and started giving out backpacks. He moved to Jacksonville a bit later, and we took it over. We've been doing it ever since. It's gone from 10 backpacks a year to over 400.” Charlotte Wienckoski added, “It's amazing now how many people are involved. Holy Trinity collects 30 or more backpacks. Ascension usually collects about 60, and other groups have been putting backpacks together for almost as long as we've been doing this. We also bring out two big grills to cook hamburgers and hot dogs. We pass out Christmas cookies, candy, and sometimes lottery tickets. It's turned into a nice affair, not one of the biggest, but it's just very touching how nice people are, how considerate and how appreciative. “It's a more personal event for us than anything else,” she explained. “We've done a lot of fundraisers and charities, but this is just a little more personal.”►

YOU CAN HELP Christmas in a Pack 2017 The greatest gift that the holidays can bring is helping those that are less fortunate than ourselves. With the help of hundreds of families, volunteers and local businesses, this project has distributed more than 6,000 backpacks to the homeless in the past 14 years.

Building a Pack

oted one of the Top 50 running stores in the U.S. multiple times since opening in 2003, Running Zone has been serving the running and fitness community, primarily in Brevard County, for over 12 years as the leader in running, walking, fitness and multi-sport solutions. Don and Denise Piercy have organized numerous running and walking events in Brevard County since 2003 and have donated proceeds from these events to various nonprofit organizations. Their goal has been to promote exercise and fitness in the community, primarily through running, jogging, walking and related educational programs and publications. “Our Running Zone Foundation's charter is to promote and encourage health and fitness in our community through running, jogging, walking, related educational programs, and publications,” Denise Piercy said. “The foundation was established in the years between 2003 and 2009. With the purpose to promote exercise and fitness and to give back to local organizations. We have 14 events now. “We have a seven-race series that is all 5K or less and very family oriented,” Piercy added. “We have free childcare, we have fun runs for kids, and give all the kids bags full of goodies at the end of the fun run we try to make it very affordable for a family. “We also have our kids-only event, Long Dogger's Kid's Marathon and Half-Marathon, and then we have the Space Coast Marathon, which is our largest event. One of the newer events is the Space Coast Countdown to Fitness. We encourage any elementary and middle school student in the entire county, public or private, to create a team at their school. The students each get a t-shirt that says they're in the program, they get a banner for their school and they also get four milestone awards per child. Every five miles they run they get an award, whether it's a bag, or a rubber bracelet, or a gift certificate for a smoothie, it's something that they get in their hands when they accomplish five miles. Over the 10 weeks they do 25.2 miles. This is a completely free program funded by our foundation. We had about 1,500 students last year, so it's been doing well. Our participation level for all our events in 2016 was 21,119.” In 2016, the foundation gave back $118,900 to the community. “We've done pretty good each year being able to give back to our community,” Piercy added. “Probably well over one million dollars since we started. In the Space Coast Marathon alone, we have 18 recipients so that's our largest event, beneficiary-wise.” ◆

P

Philanthropy is a trade that Laurilee Thompson learned from her parents, Rodney and Mary Jean. Thompson says, “they’re the ones who started Dixie Crossroads in 1983, and they were always generous to the community while I was out running the commercial fishing boat, catching grouper for the restaurant.” Early on, her parents raised money to buy an ATV for the Canaveral National Seashore Rangers. They were walking the beach every morning to count the new sea turtle nests, and they needed an ATV to ride instead. Her father picked a dinner on their menu, took two dollars from every one of those dinners sold, and raised enough money to buy the ATV. A couple years later, the Titusville High School band was raising money for a trip to Paris. He did the same thing and donated much of the money for the trip. “He also raised money for the YMCA so that Titusville could have its own,” Thompson added. “We give out about $60,000 a year, every year, in gift certificates. We also donate food and hold fundraisers at the restaurant for the SPCA and the Florida Wildlife Hospital.” Thompson proudly says. Last year, they held the first Florida Seafood Boil, a fundraiser at the Wild Ocean Seafood Market. It was held on the docks at the Market. “With the shrimp boat in the background, we set up Cajun cookers and grills right there on the dock, and served people right there on the waterfront at Port Canaveral. We did that for the Florida Wildlife Hospital,” Thompson said. When Thompson got off the fishing boat and started working at the restaurant, she was asked to be on the board of the Space Coast Autobahn Society. “That was unusual because the perception is that commercial fishermen are bad people who overfish and don’t care about the environment. I went to the first meeting not knowing what to expect and I found an incredibly nice group of people who were as upset about the state of the Indian River Lagoon as I was,” she said. That was when she started the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival. “That was 1997, and it is now one of the largest birding and wildlife festivals in the world.” Thompson adds, “I also do a tremendous amount of public speaking about the lagoon. I’ve opened a lot of people’s eyes to the past beauty, majesty and productivity of it. You can’t expect people to try to save something if they don’t understand what it is that they’re trying to save and restore. So, my little talk tries to educate people on the goal of the restoration. You know, this is what it used to be like and this is what it needs to get back to.” Thompson has also been on the Tourist Development Council for 17 years as the voice for eco-tourism in the county. ◆

eanne Whitman created Bras for a Cause about five years ago, and it has grown every year. “The first year, I invited people to come to my place of business and decorate bras, just for awareness. The second year, I did the same thing. We just had a little get-together and decorated bras.” The third year, Whitman decided to make this event grow. “We had it at Pizza Gallery & Grill and added a trivia game to entice people to come. They also brought bras to fill up the big basket that we had.” In fact, they filled two baskets that night. “People brought bras, hundreds of bras.” Those who attended that night absolutely loved the event. They had a free meal, and Whitman donated everything through the American Cancer Society. The next year Whitman looked online for a place she could send the bras and found The Bra Recyclers in Arizona. “They ship them out to people all over the world that are in need due to natural disasters and even to human trafficking survivors.” That led Whitman to the fourth-year Bras for a Cause event held at Duran Golf Club. Whitman tells us, “We had an explosion of people. I was so taken aback by the outpouring of people coming that I felt I had to do this for other people, too. I felt like I needed to spread out, plus I’d had a personal experience in human trafficking, so this year I decided to talk about it and add support for that cause as well. I recently joined Zonta of Melbourne, the anti-human trafficking group that supports these victims. They work with the Space Coast Human Trafficking Task Force who receives all the money and all the bras and sends both out to where it’s needed.” Whitman saw over 140 people this year at the Suntree Country Club, and the event now features all types of vendors. “We also had male leaders this year! The men wore a bra and decorated with their hobby, their sport, or something. They came out of the elevator and walked around where all the ladies sat at tables. Then they went up on stage with baskets in front of each of them. Sierra Hack, Miss USA ambassador, drove the event from there, collecting money in the baskets to pick a winner.” Bras for a Cause has made Whitman more aware of what’s going on in the community and the county. Whitman has been involved in many different aspects of volunteering including the Kiwi Tennis Club’s Women’s Grand Slam. For the past two years, she’s sponsored and hosted Women’s Day. “The proceeds go to Candlelighters and the Morgan Project; I’m very proud of that, too,” Whitman says. ◆

Evening Scott Center’s

here are many families affected by autism, whether it’s the individuals with the disease or their relatives seeking treatment for their family member. The Scott Center for Autism Treatment at the Florida Institute of Technology has been a place for individuals to get treatment, for families to learn more about autism and for research to be implemented on it. According to The Scott Center for Autism Treatment at the Florida Institute of Technology’s executive director, Michael Kelley, one in 68 individuals has autism, equating to 1.4 percent of the population. Community support is essential to the center’s sustained success, and every year residents from Brevard and beyond come together for the center’s “An Evening of Hope” event. This year’s event was held April 8 at the Eau Gallie Yacht Club in Indian Harbour Beach and raised nearly $145,000 for research, treatment and subsidies for the center. The funds also go to the center’s WISH scholarships, which provide early intervention treatment for children with autism and related disorders to families that may not be able to afford it. Next year’s event will be held February 17, 2018 at the Shah residence in Merritt Island. For Edward and Cheryl Scott, the decision to assist in funding the creation of the center in 2009 came from a personal place, as they have had family members diagnosed with autism and understood the importance of dealing with the challenges the disorder can produce. Hearing from families whose children were treated at the center has been

52 : spac ec oa st l iv in g

striking and has reinforced the family’s view that the center was needed. “There was a lady at the center, standing at the reception desk crying, and she was obviously emotionally affected,” Edward Scott said. “We went up to her and asked if there was something wrong, and she said, ‘No, I’m just so happy; I just learned that my son no longer has to get special treatment because the treatment at the center had been so effective and now he can be mainstreamed into school.” The event has also received support from sponsors such as Kempf ’s Jewelers, which has been involved since the very first Evening of Hope. Kempf ’s has raffled jewelry pieces in the past and next year will offer raffle tickets for $25 each for a Rolex. “The Evening of Hope events are something I, as well as many in the community come to look forward to each year,” Scott said. “It is very well attended and is the perfect blend of fun and fundraising.” ◆

Early Learning Coalition of Brevard

By Steven Hicks

The Early Learning Coalition of Brevard is well-known in the community. There are quite a few little ones in our area, who, along with their families, are receiving services through the ELC, and that is through two primary programs they administer. One is the School Readiness Program which assists low- to moderate-income working families with the cost of childcare. There are about 3,700 children enrolled in this program alone in Brevard County. Sky Beard, the ELC’s executive director, tells us, “It is very challenging for many families to afford quality child care and still afford all those other expenses all families have. You have rent, your car and food and insurance and all those other things. That’s why you hear a lot of families say, ‘I don’t even bother working, because my whole paycheck goes to pay for childcare.’” The School Readiness Program is state and federally funded. It allows the ELC to help families with the cost of daycare. “But they pay a part as well; that’s important,” Beard adds. It really is a twofold benefit that families can continue to work and go to school, and in many cases families are doing both. “Keeping families earning and attending school to better themselves ultimately leads to self-sufficiency for that family, better outcomes for that family and of course, for our community,” Beard says. The ELC also administers Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten, or VPK. VPK is state-funded and it is free for all four-year-olds regardless of income. School Readiness is an income-based program, but VPK is not. Brevard County actually has the highest enrollment in the state of four-year-olds in VPK. Ninety-two percent or so of all fouryear-olds in Brevard County are enrolled in a VPK program. Beard says, “One of the most significant pieces of our mission is to make sure that when children are eligible for early childhood programs, that the places that they go, that the choices that parents make as to where they enroll their children, are of high quality. We are really not satisfied with just having children enrolled. We are as equally concerned that where they go provides the high quality education that we know that they need and deserve.” The ELC also vets, monitors and administers all the VPK providers in the county. They also provide professional development, technical assistance and coaching for teachers and directors in those programs. “We have fabulous partnerships with many community partners, like Brevard Public Schools, who are also interested in our work,” Beard points out. “We have really good alliances in that way to help us move forward. It’s definitely a community mission.” ◆

paceCoast Living is hosting a toy drive at the Church of Viera December 10. There will be an airing of Toy Story, with admission to the event being a toy or a monetary donation. The doors open at 2, and the movie starts at 2:30. The proceeds will go to Toys For Kids Brevard. The toy drive is the brainchild of Nevin Flinchbaugh, art director for SCB Marketing. An avid fan of Toy Story and Disney/Pixar, Flinchbaugh is known for the Pizza Planet truck he drives around Brevard County. Much like the reason for building a real-life version of the truck found in the

Toy Story franchise, Flinchbaugh created the toy drive to bring the community together and provide a place and event where parents can teach their children the value of helping others while having fun and enjoying time together in the process. “The toy drive is the avenue where we can bring smiles to children that without the help of these charities would not get to enjoy the joys of Christmas that most of us are accustomed to,” Flinchbaugh said. “It brings happiness to those families while the families participating in the event get to come together, laugh, and spend time with each other as well.” ◆

fter 17 years of serving the community with mouthwatering cuisine, Island Pasta Company in historic downtown Melbourne couldn’t be happier with its positive impact on the Space Coast. Not only does this Caribbean dining spot take pride in being one the longest-running restaurants in the area, the owners, Mike and Tracy Melhado, played a significant role in the revitalization of downtown Melbourne. “Anything we do ties with our menu and fits with our brand, having an island, Caribbean feel,” says Terrence Crovo, Marketing and Operations for the Thornado Hospitality Group. “That’s the feeling you get at Island Pasta Company.” Interested in having Island Pasta Company cater your next event? It’s not just the delectable food that sets this restaurant apart from the rest. Across from the restaurant is a unique venue space dedicated to hosting large parties, gatherings and brunches, seating approximately 75 guests. In fact, Crovo says events are a big focus of the restaurant, as many businesses and annual events choose Island Pasta to host and cater their gatherings. Let’s get to the grub. For starters, tasty choices ranging from the popular, made-from-scratch, Island empanadas to healthy alternatives with gluten-free pasta options, to the house favorite family-recipe Puerto Rican flan, you can’t go wrong ordering from this menu’s variety of offerings. It’s guaranteed to satisfy even the pickiest taste buds. But that’s not all. “People think we are just about pasta, but we offer so much more,” Crovo says. Island-inspired drinks leave the palate fully satisfied with refreshing favorites such as the mango mojito, jasmine mint lemontini, cucumber basil martini, and more. Be sure to catch “Island Time” happy hour from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday-Sunday. Next time you visit historic downtown Melbourne, escape and share this island experience with friends and family. ◆ november 2017 : 61

Without a Heart, it’s just a machine. So in 1971, a little Heart built a different kind of airline—one that made sure everyone could fly. Everyone has important places to go. So we invented low-fares to help them get there. To us, you’re not 1A or 17B. You’re a person with a name, like Steve. Here, we think everyone deserves to feel special, no matter where you sit or how much you fly. And with all the places we’re going next, we’ll always put you first, because our love of People is still our most powerful fuel. Some say we do things differently. We say, why would we do things any other way? Without a Heart, it’s just a machine.

Achieve Beautiful Skin, a Viera-based medi-spa, hosted their 5th annual Bras for a Cause on Thursday, September 21 at Suntree Country Club. Attendees brought new or gently used bras to meet the event's goal of receiving 600 bras. Bras collected at this event (and leading up to the event) are donated to The Zonta Club of Melbourne and Driven by Heart (formerly Breast Friends). A new addition to this year’s event was Men for a Cause. Male leaders in our community participated by decorating and wearing bras at the event to raise awareness and donations.

If you live nearby you know The Avenue Viera is the town center. We spent a little time with Scott McCarthy, The Avenue’s general manager, and he told us there’s more going on than we could have ever guessed!

SCL: For someone living in Viera, it seems like The Avenue Viera is THE place for everything. There is always an event of some kind. Just how much goes on here? SCOTT: We have 35 to 45 events a year. Ninety percent of them are related to a charity, our biggest being for the St. Baldrick's Foundation. Most of our events give back to the community in some way, and we never charge to have an event. SCL: What is The Avenue’s mission in regard to all of these events? SCOTT: We have them not only to benefit the charities, but also to increase traffic. Our mission is to increase the sales for our tenants so more will want to come. On a more personal level, we like to give back to the community because it's the community that supports us. Besides St. Baldrick's, we also have American Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We're having the Making Strides Walk back this year, with something like 10,000 people, and we're doing the Relay for Life with the American Cancer Society. Another great example from last year was when the Viera High School Band was invited to go to the Sugar Bowl. It's a great honor to go, but it cost $950 per person in expenses. For three months prior to the trip, we let The Viera high school marcking band do fundraisers to raise money. If we're not giving back to a charitable organization, we're giving back to the local schools.

SCL: Tell us a little about holiday preparations at The Avenue. SCOTT: We're having our North Pole again, with Mr. and Mrs. Claus starting December 8 and running every weekend up until Christmas. The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra’s 40-piece band will perform on Saturday, December 16. They’ll also send us their children's choir for our tree lighting ceremony on Black Friday at 6:00 p.m. We’re always coordinating carolers and our local churches and schools to perform with Central Park. We’ll offer The Avenue to any organization that has an orchestra, or group to come here and perform. We provide the stage area and lighting. We do that throughout the holidays. We’ll also continue to offer carriage rides, but we’re adding train rides, too. 80 : spac ec oa st l iv in g

SCOTT MCCARTHY GENERAL MANAGER, THE AVENUE VIERA SCL: We've heard rumors that you're redesigning the central park area… SCOTT: The first phase will be to install a more prominent sign between Panera and Moe's indicating Central Park, sort of like a gazebo arch with lighting. We’ll also be working on the landscaping in front of the shops. We're going to make it easier for people to get to the sidewalks from their parked car to the shops. We are redeveloping Central Park. We're going to move the stage back closer to the wall to create more of an area in front of it. We're going to get rid of some of the lower ground cover and some of the railing, and make it more of a flat surface for events. We’ll have larger areas to put tents or display tables or even chairs if we have a bridal show or concert. Also, when Central Park is not being used for an event, we're going to have cornhole boards and giant Jenga games that people can play. That's our second phase. Then the third phase is turning the fountain in front of the theater into a jet fountain. It'll be an interactive fountain for kids to play in starting in 2018. It'll be right across from our 9/11 Memorial.

SCL: This is a long-range plan, right? SCOTT: Not really; we’re planning on having this all completed by late spring 2018, including some painting, resurfacing, and installing security cameras to add to our well-lit place to shop for our guests.
