Without a Heart, it’s just a machine. So in 1971, a little Heart built a different kind of airline—one that made sure everyone could fly. Everyone has important places to go. So we invented low-fares to help them get there. To us, you’re not 1A or 17B. You’re a person with a name, like Steve. Here, we think everyone deserves to feel special, no matter where you sit or how much you fly. And with all the places we’re going next, we’ll always put you first, because our love of People is still our most powerful fuel. Some say we do things differently. We say, why would we do things any other way? Without a Heart, it’s just a machine.

It’s a New Year and a New You!
I don’t know about you, but I’m glad to start a new year. I love the holidays, but also love the calm after the storm. So here we are, 2018 and all its potential glory. We’re not going to propose New Year’s resolutions or massive lifestyle changes. If you want to start a weight lifting program and give up coffee, chocolate and TV, that’s on you. Instead, we’re going to look inward a bit in hopes of reaching out better. I’ll explain. We realized we have great friends with great experiences. Friends wellversed in healthy living, travel, food, fashion, home and personal development. You’ll notice I didn’t write “experts.” That’s because these people know a lot through living and are still actively experiencing, just like you. No different to be sure, just with experiences maybe more concentrated in a particular area. We’ve asked them to write our UpFront articles, starting with this month’s issue. I’ve only identified a broad topic area. The rest is up to them. I hope that as you read their articles each month, you’ll come to consider them friends as well, and look forward to their next entry. It has been a pleasure for me to read each of this month’s articles and to now share them with you. Enjoy… and Happy New Year!

“There’s Always a Choice”
Thieves
OIL By Judy Piersall
Promote a Healthy Immune System One of my personal go-to products is thieves oil. It wards off all sorts of germs and is intended to promote a healthy immune system. How did thieves oil come to be? Why such a strange name? While there are several versions of the story, the one common denominator is the bubonic plague. One version of the story is from 15th century, as the plague was becoming an epidemic in Europe and Asia. As that version goes, four thieves who were known for robbing infected dead bodies of their possessions never contracted the disease themselves. When captured and tried for their crimes, a judge offered them leniency if they would share how they could come in contact with all those bodies but not get sick. The thieves revealed that they’d rub their bodies with a concoction of oils. Hence the name, thieves oil. We know now that the oil is a combination of clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus radiata and rosemary. 22 :
spac ec oa st l iv in g
Thieves® essential oil is a powerful combination of clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus radiata, and rosemary essential oils
Being in the public and having contact with people as a flight attendant, fighting germs is imperative. Thieves oil supports my body’s natural defenses against germs from all sources, and I even put it on right before I go to an event where I know I’ll be shaking lots of hands. We’re in the middle of cold and flu season now, but I use thieves oil throughout the year. My whole family uses it now as well. I’ll rub a couple of drops into the soles of my bare feet every day (our pores are larger on the soles of our feet). This essential oil can also be used in a diffuser in your home. It is readily available online or in stores like GNC or Target, but check the efficacy of the thieves oil you’re considering - all are not created equal. I order online from a bulk apothecary. My personal choice is to avoid flu shots, so I rely on thieves oil to help in the fight against viruses. I’m not saying this should be your choice, but after getting a flu shot every year for 7-8 years, I was having symptoms that
prompted my integrative medicine doctor (everyone should have one of these!) to run a metals test on me. The test showed that my body was riddled with metals. The first question the doctor asked me was, “Have you been getting the flu shot?” Metal overload is common from the flu shot, and most people are unaware of this. That was four years ago, and I decided against getting the shot again. Counting my blessings, I rarely get sick, which is amazing considering my career choice. But when I do get sick, it’s not for long. Let’s face it: it’s okay to be sick every so often. It’s the only way our immune systems stay fit - they need a good fight in order to stay strong. These are my personal choices, often against conventional norms, and my choices are not intended to give medical advice or discourage people from seeking it. Until next month…here’s to healthy living and remember you always have choices. ◆

Shades
OF GREEN
Ireland By Kathryn Varnes Ireland is my favorite country. The people are amazingly friendly, spirited and they love Americans. It is almost a cliché, but the Emerald Isle really is a patchwork of every shade of green – and then some – and each village or city has its own charming identity. Most visits begin in Dublin, as that is the site of the country’s major airport and largest city with some 1.2 million Dubliners living there. With outstanding history and endless sites and attractions, a family could spend days in Dublin. Chief among the must-see stops are the Guinness Brewery, Jameson Whiskey Distillery, the old town jail, Trinity College and its Book of Kells – but that only scratches the surface of a city with known roots dating back to the Viking raids of the early 9th century.
24 :

Kathryn Varnes
The Guinness Storehouse and Jameson Distillery tours are staples of most visits to Ireland, and they do not disappoint. Just remember that “Guinness is good for you,” and “It doesn’t travel well,” and you will be a veteran of the tours and all of Ireland, for that matter. But don’t forget the free samples at the end, either! Dublin is built around the River Liffey, and the Temple Bar area sits midcity across its south bank. Home to scores of the best Irish pubs and restaurants you could ever hope to visit, Temple Bar is known worldwide for its fish and chips, bangers and mash, potato pancakes, coddle – an Irish stew, mussels, salmon and, of course, Guinness. Musicians can be seen and heard any given evening at pubs around all of Dublin, with Temple Bar hosting the most of them. The sounds of fiddles, bagpipes, banjos, flutes and more belt from doorways often too crowded to pass through; with one rule constant when you do find your way in – dancing, singing and a Guinness or Smithwicks (pronounced Smidicks) are a must! As you would expect, there are many great hotels

in Dublin. The Clarence Hotel, previously owned by U2 members Bono and The Edge, is a must stop for many visitors, and the staff graciously welcomes lookieloo guests through the lobby. My two favorites, though, are The Shelbourne, which has hosted so many celebrities that there is a museum detailing it all. Across St. Stephen’s Green city park and near Temple Bar, The Shelbourne is the perfect spot for exploring Dublin. And, with a daily afternoon tea time (with champagne), it can’t be beat. My other favorite lodging is the Intercontinental, which is about a 20-minute walk from town. Stately and all you would expect from a former Four Seasons property, the Intercontinental has large rooms, a beautiful courtyard and always the most stunning flowers in its lobby. Just an hour or so outside and due south of Dublin is County Wicklow, home of the Wicklow National Park and my very favorite place in Ireland. Hilly, green – did I say green? -- and perfect for exploring and hiking, the Wicklow area is like a fairy tale with the Powerscourt Estate at the center of it all. A former Ritz Carlton and still a Marriott property, Powerscourt is a former 13th century castle with such remarkable gardens that National Geographic lists it as one of the top three gardens in the world. Once out of Powerscourt and the Wicklow Mountains, your options are many; north to Belfast, south to Waterford, west to Galway or back east to the center of it all, Dublin. Whichever way you may follow the compass, you will not go wrong. For us, we have no qualms with going wherever it may point. ◆

Florida Style When cooler temps come to Florida, you can’t afford to be caught with an unprepared wardrobe. With every season change, there comes an opportunity to make sure your closet reflects your unique style. With cool, crisp air settling in, it’s about more than just a long-sleeved shirt or a drab sweater – stay warm from head to toe without sacrificing a look worthy of showing off. For this season’s fashion must-haves, turn to comfortable clothing that holds up against chilly weather with these stylish options. There are countless choices for putting together the perfect outfit for this season, so prepare yourself for whatever each day may hold.

Think Layers
The focus this season is all on layering rich and textured fabrics such as wools, tweeds and faux-furs. Try matching a cool tee underneath a thick cable-knit sweater or cardigan and top it off with a vintage-looking jacket.. Not only will you be looking stylish and warm, but you’ll also be able to remove your layers once inside.

Coat or Jacket?
Faux-fur has made a much welcome comeback this season. Parkas with furlined hoods are proving to be particularly popular, as are goose down-filled puff jackets. Peacoats in black and brown sandstone are both classic and practical, and can provide the perfect finishing touch to any winter outfit.

Accessories
If you’re more the kind of person that likes to give a nod to trends without letting them over influence your whole look, then accessories are a good way to go. Scarves, hats and gloves are a great way of keeping warm and are available in all this season’s key patterns and fabrics. A totem pole knitted beanie with a matching scarf for example, can add a splash of color and make an outfit really “pop.”
Be Yourself
With unlimited winter fashion options at your disposal, don’t limit yourself. Instead, be true to your personal style, unafraid to live comfortably in your own skin – fashion included. Your fashion decisions are the ideal way to show off your personal flair. Follow your own style instincts, try new things and never back away from what you feel is the perfect look for the occasion. ◆

Healthy Eating in the New Year
By Deb Kemps
Time to stray away from all the fad diets that only offer minimal results in the short term and can be harmful in the long term. Eating a mainly plant based whole foods diet is beneficial to everyone and can be very satisfying. I spoke with Erika Nigh, a personal fitness trainer and owner of Transformation Station, who has tried Atkins, low fat, low calorie, Weight Watchers, Paleo (Caveman), Ketogenic diet, raw Vegan, vegetarian, among others. Erika said while everyone’s body is different and has different needs, focusing on real whole foods (mainly vegetables and fruits) and removing processed foods has proven to provide the most overall health benefits. You cannot only lose weight from eating this way, but also lower blood pressure, LDL cholesterol and blood sugar. 28 :

Nigh shared this, “Try this for a couple of weeks; for breakfast, try a slice of Ezekial bread toasted with either cashew butter and banana, or smashed avocado and a tomato slice. For lunch, eat a big salad, preferably meatless but add any combination of avocado, olives, nuts, seeds, beans and vinaigrette dressing. For dinner, build your plate with 3/4 raw or steamed vegetables (these can be in a salad) and the remaining 1/4 with legumes (beans), a meat alternative or local-caught fish. Try to incorporate Meatless Monday as a family; there are so many more options available now than 10 years ago.
Here’s Erika Nigh’s favorite quick dinner, Zoodle spaghetti with meatless meatballs. 1 bag of frozen meatless meatballs 2 large (or 4 smaller) zucchinis (spiralize) or already spiralized zucchini in the produce section from Publix 2 cloves garlic 1 med white onion 1 pkg organic spinach 1 pkg portabello mushrooms (sliced or 2-3 caps), preferably organic 1 pkg Follow your Heart vegan or regular grated parmesan 1 jar Newman’s Own Pasta Sauce olive oil optional: handful of fresh basil and crushed red pepper for topping Directions: In a non-stick frying pan add 1 Tbsp. of olive oil and coat pan. Start cooking frozen meatballs on medium heat, flip and stir while preparing other ingredients until meatballs are browned on all sides. In a 2-quart pot on medium heat, sauté with 1 tbsp. olive oil, two garlic cloves chopped or crushed, diced onion, diced mushrooms until cooked. Then add spinach for about 5 minutes or until the spinach is wilted. Add 1 jar of Newman’s Own Pasta Sauce and one can of tomato paste. Stir until combined. Reduce to low heat. Take the spiraled zucchini and, using little to no oil, sauté them in a separate non-stick frying pan for a few minutes to soften. Drain excess liquid and add to the veggie loaded sauce!

Small Changes
BIG IMPACT By Meaghan Branham
For most of us, January sets the stage for new beginnings. No matter how cold or cloudy it might be outside (those three days here in Florida where the temperature drops below 70 can be hard to get through), the first few weeks of the year are colored by a collective motivation to be our best selves. This often includes transforming our homes into the spaces of our dreams, and even if it doesn’t, there is no denying that freshening up a space can provide motivation for other projects on our lists. The kitchen where you can try all those new recipes, a backyard where you can entertain friends weekly, or a freshly organized desk where you can get a jump start on work play a huge role in the things we accomplish and the memories we make in these spaces. When your home makes you feel inspired, safe, and positive, realizing all your resolutions might just come a little easier, and luckily it can often be done simply, affordably and quickly. Take advantage of this energy and keep that sense of a fresh start going by doing these little things to make your home inspiring all year long: 30 :

Tidying Up
I’ll start with the advice we’ve all heard a million times before: Clearing out the clutter in your home has a huge impact on your mindset. When your space is cluttered or messy, it’s difficult to concentrate on anything else, especially starting a new project. While it may seem daunting, breaking it down by room can make organizing these spaces much less intimidating. As you’ll know if you ever watched a TLC show in the early 2000s, simply set aside a bit of time every day to sort through the clutter and separate everything into categories like “give away,” “keep,” or “throw away,” and before you know it you’ll have what feels like a brand-new space. Knowing everything is in its place provides peace of mind that makes it easy to move on to the other things on your to-do list.
Accessorize
There is so much potential for expression when decorating your home, and the smallest details of a room can be the source of the most personality and color in your space. Fresh flowers or plants bring a sense of life and vibrancy, and offer tons of opportunity for creativity, whether through the arrangements, or in how you display them. Old mason jars, wine bottles, and candle jars make beautiful vases and cost almost nothing. Candles can immediately make any room a bit cozier, and add an extra element of ambience by appealing to more than one of our senses. Finally, use shelves and end tables to display things you love, such as family heirlooms or photographs, so that you see them every day. This is your chance to really make any room feel completely yours. My room, for instance, is full
of stacks of books, anywhere and everywhere that I can fit them. To some this might feel like clutter, but it makes me feel right at home.
Add Artwork
Nothing makes a space feel more like yours than hanging up your favorite artwork. Websites like Etsy and Society6 offer tons of options for unique, affordable pieces. For larger spaces, tapestries add vibrancy, while gallery walls with multiple prints allow for variety and plenty of visual interest. If you’re looking for even more costeffective artwork, you can upload and print photos taken from your phone and find inexpensive frames to display them in at thrift stores. Being surrounded by images that inspire you or remind you of your favorite moments with your favorite people has the power to instantly lift your mood.
Revamp
You don’t necessarily need to add anything to a space to make it feel new. Repurposing furniture through refinishing, antiquing, or adding patterned contact paper can make it look and feel like an entirely different piece. Even rearranging furniture can breathe new life into your space, so try a little feng shui if you feel like you’re in danger of entering a design rut, but are short on time or money. A fresh space isn’t just a beautiful place to dream up and plan out all the things this year might bring; it also might just turn out to be the springboard that gets you started on all those other goals. Even little changes like these provide enough of an interruption in your routine to keep you excited about how the smallest actions can bring about big changes. ◆ jan ua ry 2 018 : 31

Happy New Resolutions!
Mallorie Ann Ingram
By Mallorie Ann Ingram With the holidays over and a warm welcome to the new year behind us, now is the time to start talking New Year’s resolutions. We’re talking about goals, dreams, plans, big moves and the like. We all set them with the anticipation of ultimate success and growth. Can we be honest? No matter how front and center these life-altering ideas may be in our minds, often we lose sight of them and get caught in the chaos of everyday life. In fact, that may be one of your resolutions this year, to carry out and finish one! Goals can be daunting, overwhelming, and just downright difficult. Let’s make it happen by doing a little leg work. Yes, we are going to plan out the year’s plan. What I mean by this is that it’s not just about setting goals and doing them, you must do some groundwork first. Typically, goals are never achieved because we don’t plan them out properly. We must slice, dice and serve them up just right to gain a solid level of success. So, let’s get started!
BODY + MIND + SOUL = YOU 32 :

2018 Goals-Make a List 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Reorganize Closet Lose 10 lbs. Eat Healthier and Cleaner Clean Garage: to park inside Time Management: Dedicate more time to friends and family
This looks standard enough, right? Now comes that slice and dice routine I was talking about earlier. The biggest thing you will ever do in this process is to stop and take a step back. You have five fantastic goals on paper but you must not look at the entire picture. That’s when the overwhelming dread creeps in. Instead, ask yourself an easy question: What’s my first goal’s initial task? I’m referring to the differentiation between deliverables and tasks. Cleaning out your closet is a deliverable, but removing all the shoes from the closet is a set task you must complete first. Take a look at the list again with this new thought process. 1.
What is your
WealthConfidence?
A Goal Without A Plan Is Just A Wish
Reorganize Closet -Remove hangers and shoes -Place unused clothing in boxes in separate room -Etc. 2. Lose 10 lbs. -Walk two miles every day this week -Cut carbs and sugar -Etc. 3. Eat Healthier and Cleaner -Decrease sugar intake -Eat more fruits/veggies -Etc. 4. Clean Garage: to park inside -Build Shelving -Buy storage bins -Etc. 5. Time Management: Dedicate more time to friends and family -Buy a planner -Turn off phone during meals -Etc.

Eau Gallie Arts District Murals Project When the Eau Gallie Arts District (EGAD) Main Street program was formed in 2010, one of its first goals was to develop a Public Arts program, because murals are transformational to an area in many ways. Many people still do not know where the arts district is, but they know about the shark mural installed by Shark Toof, a noted international muralist. After two rounds of mural installations, we decided to “go big. Because noted artists attend the largest art show in the country, in Miami Beach in December--Art Basel-we invite artists to stop in Eau Gallie first and participate in our first branded multi-mural installation we titled Anti-Gravity Project. We took a long time to even name the event because we wanted it to describe what the impact would be to the arts district and connect it to the Space Coast. The point of the title derives from our belief and intention that the installation of such world class murals would elevate the arts district and, ultimately, the Space Coast onto the national stage as a cultural destination. 34 : spac ec oa st l iv in g

We were fortunate to host Matt Gondek, an LA based muralist who calls himself a deconstructive pop artist who painted his interpretation of Picasso’s “Guernica.” Hyland Mather and wife Mando Marie completed two murals during the project; his featuring painted graphic shapes that take perfect advantage of the natural columns on the wall. Mando painted the eastern wall of the Derek Gores Gallery and can be seen peeking above the other buildings as you come into Eau Gallie from the causeway. Serving as a gateway to the arts district, Michelle Tanguay’s gorgeous linear wall features a woman gazing out over the existing real palm trees. The mural is on the old LaCroix theater dating back to 1910, but soon to be a new thrilling venture where the mural will serve as an exciting backdrop. Doug Hoekzema, a/k/a/Hoxxoh, an artist from Miami, completed his mural at Intracoastal Brewing Company before the event was underway. His colorful concentric circles line the interior wall of the brewery’s biergarten. Hoxxoh also painted the new giant rainbow bullseye on the Miami Marine Stadium seats. Jay Fanakapan, a British artist whose art has evolved into mastering rubbery effect figures and helium balloon designs, will greet drivers on Montreal Avenue on their way beachside. A master at using shadow and reflective light, Jay’s work pops off the surfaces into a 3D effect. These noted artists, combined with accomplished local artists, helped launch our first branded multiple mural event festival designed to elevate the arts district and the Space Coast. Mission accomplished. ◆

Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock met on May 12, 1975, the first day of rehearsals for “Jesus Christ Superstar” in Sydney, Australia. They became instant friends with their common love for the Beatles and, of course, singing. After the show’s performances, they would play pizza parlors, coffee bars and nightclubs with just one guitar and two voices. They quickly gained a reputation for great harmonies and for the original songs that Russell was constantly writing. They made a demo on a cassette of two songs and took it to every record company in Sydney. Everyone turned it down but one — CBS Records — who admired their unique style.
"
Hopefully, the audience will walk out after the show and say to themselves, ‘What just happened? I was crying, I was laughing, I was remembering what it was like in the ‘80s when…’ But we play new songs too, and they're just as engaging as the old ones.
"
-Graham Russell
That same year, they opened for Rod Stewart across Australia and then throughout the U.S. and Canada, playing huge venues before Stewart would take the stage. They found new fans, but did not break into the U.S. market. Somehow their music found its way to industry legend Clive Davis in New York. He immediately signed Air Supply to Arista Records and, in 1980, “Lost in Love” became the fastestselling single in the world, leaping to the top of all the charts. Their second single was “All Out of Love,” and that climbed the charts even quicker. Seven top-five singles later, Air Supply had equaled the Beatles’ run of consecutive top-five singles. Their albums sold more than 20 million copies. “Lost in Love” was named song of the year in 1980, and, with the other singles, sold more than 10 million copies. In 2018, the duo continues to play more than 150 shows a year worldwide, including stops in England, Ireland, Israel, Philippines, Korea, Japan, Canada, the U.S. and beyond. Russell and Hitchcock also appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and performed their classic “All Out of Love.” Air Supply comes to The King Center on January 28th, immediately after tour dates in China, Japan, Malaysia and Indonesia.
Russell says, “We haven't been to China for a few years, so it'll be nice to reignite that place for us. Then we have six shows in Japan, Malaysia for two shows, and lastly to Indonesia. We're doing quite a few shows in 22 days, then right to you in Melbourne, which will be nice.” He continued, “We always look forward to Melbourne especially because it's a nice getaway for some warm weather; but that's not the reason we come to Melbourne. We come there because the demand is there. We’ve played in Melbourne at least six times, maybe more.” As for the show? “We let the music speak for itself. We have great songs, of course we have Russell's voice and the show is very engaging. We go into the audience, and the people become part of the show,” Russell said. “In fact, recently, there was a group of people at the meet and greet after the show. They pulled Russell and I aside and they said, ‘We knew all the hits, but something happens in your show.’ They said, ‘It's so inviting and it's so warm, and you disarm the audience straight away.’ That’s a really lovely thing to hear because we don't try to do that. We're just who we are, we just let our own character come through the music.” ◆

is the new
Long-time personal trainer, fitness instructor and certified Natural Health professional Debbie Wall, 62, shares with the Space Coast what healthy living is really all about, from A to Z. Debbie Wall not only practices what she preaches, she owns it, too. This business-savvy, healthconscious woman believes in helping people achieve weight loss success, but more importantly, creating a new way of living and enjoying life to its fullest. When Wall lost her husband and her cherished best dog-friend to cancer, she realized that there is more to life than casual dieting and sporadic workout routines. No matter what obstacle, Wall says it’s all about setting goals and figuring out what works for you. Having a mindset of losing weight to fit in that little black dress or to attend your high school reunion isn’t enough. Think of getting healthy as changing your way of living. If we plan for the future in regard to family and career choices, financial gain and the like, why is the future of our physical health so different? “If you don’t take care of your body, you have nowhere to live,” Wall says. With the proper combination of motivation and diligence, grasping a better quality of life is achievable, and Wall is living proof of this testimony. You have more control than you think. “You choose to make 60 your new 40,” says Wall. Let’s start from the top. What does a day in the life of Wall look like? Here’s a sneak peak. “I get up at 5:15 for a 6:30 BodyPump Class, then I train a client. I head home to feed my Australian shepherds and have something to eat myself. Then I head back to the gym and train a client. I teach a cycling class, then another client and head home for a few hours to clean up and then back for another client. I’ll go to choir practice and home about 9:15pm. I love my job and everyday is different. It is the people that make it great.” Now, it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty of healthy eating. Most people hear the word “clean-eating” and immediately see dollar signs and clam up. Eating the right foods aren’t as pricey as you think. Washing foods thoroughly or choosing one food over the other can easily be done without weighing down the wallet. “Learning about good health and nutrition is important to me and also for my job,” Wall says. “It really is 80 percent nutrition and 20 percent exercise. That doesn't mean exercise is not important; it is very important. The two must go together." Wash, rinse, repeat. Wall explains the importance of understanding the make-up of various foods. In other words, don’t assume that all fruits and veggies are ok as is. They must be clean. ► 38 : spac ec oa st l iv in g

This class represents foods you should buy organic-non gmo:
Make it a point to avoid foods retaining high amounts of pesticides. Instead, choose fruits and veggies containing the least amount of harmful chemicals.
Apples Peaches Nectarines Strawberries Grapes Celery Spinach Sweet bell peppers Cucumbers Cherry tomatoes Snap peas (imported) Potatoes Hot peppers Kale/Collard greens
Avocados Sweet corn Cabbage Pineapple Sweet peas (frozen) Onions Asparagus Mangos Papayas Kiwi Eggplant Grapefruit Cantaloupe Cauliflower Sweet potatoes
“We have to find a way to get healthy and enjoy life at the same time,” Wall says. “Diet is not a word I like to use although it is what we all understand." Wall shares the importance of developing good nutritional habits. In fact, it is a better way to describe what each person should be focused on. The journey to better health should be enjoyable. Here’s how Wall conquers this. Try to substitute a few unhealthy things with healthier alternatives. For instance, don’t eat salty crackers. Instead, try organic blue chips. Easy enough? Next, graduate to veggie snacks, like cauliflower and celery instead of those starchy, sugary foods. Here’s a rendition to a classic dessert, pudding.
Avocado/banana/chocolate pudding 1 avocado 1 banana 1 teaspoon maple syrup 1 tablespoon cocoa powder Add to the recipe 2 tablespoons of coconut milk or almond milk. Blend all together and top with walnuts and your sweet-and-salty tooth craving is satisfied. ◆

PERFORMANCE WEAR
& CUSTOM DESIGN BY SUE DEWERFF
Viera resident Victoria Amendolare always had a desire to create and design. Her teenage dream was to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. But because of the cost of tuition and other obstacles, after graduating from Satellite High, she pursued a degree in electrical engineering. After graduation from Florida Tech, where she earned a B.S. in the field, Amendolare joined the Harris Corporation and began her career. She was part of a unique team that managed and maintained the FAA’s telecommunications network. Her job during the past 15 years afforded her opportunities she admitted she never thought possible. “It was fulfilling and gratifying, until I realized it was not,” she confessed. Outside of work she began painting abstract art as a hobby, gifting her pieces to relatives and friends. She even sold her work, earning as much as $500 for one painting. But after several years, she stopped. “I still had a yearning to be creative and needed something to keep me busy.” A New Opportunity to Create Amendolare’s opportunity to again fulfill this need came several years ago, when her daughter Isabella became interested in figure skating and joined the Theater on Ice team at the Space Coast Iceplex in Rockledge. With each level of her daughter’s progression, the requirements for more expensive, “blingier” costumes rose. That, coupled with the expense of testing, entrance fees for competition and travel forced Amendolare to find ways to save money when purchasing her outfits. “I began creating dresses for her for less than half of what I could buy them for, adding my own crystals, sequins and beads and more to the basic name brand dress that had no bling,” she said. “I found I was able to make a beautiful dress for under $400; similar and sometimes even prettier than those that were retailing for more than $1,200. Soon, she was being asked to design dresses for other skaters from the rink, including making many of the costumes for the shows.” “After my first dress or two, I wondered if I had made a mistake, but after two of the skaters wore my outfits during a competition this past spring, where I got so many compliments on the dresses, I had an unexpected reason to continue what I have grown to love.” After much deliberation, just less than a year ago, Amendolare took a leap of faith and left her job at Harris to open Meredith’s Performance Wear & Custom Designs. Fulfilling a Coach’s Vision “As coaches, we have a vision for how we want the skaters to look,” said Brielle Francis, Space Coast Iceplex director of figure skating. “Vicki has the talent and ability to take our ideas for costume design and make them a reality. We are extremely fortunate to have such an amazing costume designer at SCI.” Now, heading into her second year—with more than a dozen dresses sold—her newfound fashion design business continues to emerge. “I am booked through March and, though it is not enough to pay the bills 100 percent yet, I feel I am on the right track. I’m doing something I truly love now,” she smiled. ◆ To inquire about Meredith’s Performance Wear & Custom Design, email her at 1987victorialynn@gmail.com or call (321) 917-2754. 42 : spac ec oa st l iv in g

Scott Center for Autism Treatment
Launches Online Screening Service
The Scott Center for Autism Treatment at Florida Institute of Technology has launched ScreenOurKids.org to offer parents and caregivers access to a scientifically-validated tool for screening children between 16 and 30 months of age to assess their risk for developmental delays such as autism. The site offers the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, or M-CHAT-R. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines are clear in stating that all children should receive autism screening between 18 and 24 months of age, and the M-CHAT-R is one of the AAP’s recommended tools. However, less than 50 percent of children receive formal screening. The Scott Center aims to increase screening rates by providing this free online service. The launch of ScreenOurKids.org is part of the Scott Center’s goal of harnessing the power and reach of the internet to extend its mission of serving families, especially those in rural and underserved communities. Previous initiatives in this effort include AutismAdvisor.org, which offers free essential resources for families and communities, including more than 100 Scott Center-produced videos and other resources about early diagnosis, therapy options, teaching living skills and more. “The M–CHAT-R gauges risk for autism spectrum disorder and, when appropriate, recommends when parents should seek further testing and evaluation,” said Michael E. Kelley, Ph.D., executive director of the Scott Center, and a professor of psychology at Florida Tech.
“Kids who receive applied behavior analysis treatment during pre-school age have a 50 percent chance of being indistinguishable from their peers by elementary school,” he said. “Without intervention, only two percent will show such improvements.” According to the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 15 percent of children in the United States have a developmental delay, including autism. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends pediatricians screen children for developmental disabilities using a validated screening tool at regular intervals before the age of 2, but data from the National Survey of Children’s Health reveals that only about one in five children ages 10 months to 6 years were screened by their pediatricians in the preceding year. The automated M-CHAT-R questionnaire at ScreenOurKids. org allows parents access to the same highly effective screening tools used by pediatricians. The questionnaire is simple and easy to use, and the screening test takes less than 10 minutes. Parents can review, print and save the results to share with their child’s doctor or other developmental specialist. The screening can also be completed and results provided anonymously. The launch of ScreenOurKids.org is accompanied by an outreach campaign designed for daycare and pre-school staff. These professionals work with young children daily and often have an excellent perspective on children’s developmental progress. By completing an online form at ScreenOurKids. org/poster, daycare and pre-school professionals can receive a free, 24-by-36-inch “Don’t Miss a Step” four-color poster about autism and warning signs of developmental delays in children up to 3 years old. january 2 018 : 47

Meet GARTH STONE Few people today are able to truly love what they do, and Garth Stone is one of them. Stone served in the Army as a military police officer and personal security officer for a two star general over a sevenyear period. The greatest lesson he learned during these esteemed positions was how to be responsible and professional, traits that he implements servicing customers as Director of Internet Sales at Toyota of Melbourne. During his three years at the dealership, Stone has become close with his co-workers and thoroughly enjoys the team environment and family atmosphere. Stone and his wife are foster parents and feel truly blessed to be able to provide a loving home to children in need. Thank you Garth Stone for your service and for being a Toyota of Melbourne Hometown Hero!

There are restaurants that use a family name or a distant locale that expresses their style. And restaurants with fun names using animals as characters. There are many ways to name a restaurant, and each tells a story. This one just tells you exactly what to expect: Beachside Fusion at Kiwi. What have you learned? This place is beachside and at the Kiwi Tennis Club. But the “fusion” part? That’s special. Fusion is “the process or result of joining two or more things together to form a single entity.” In this case those “things” are cooking styles, dishes, and even the location.
You’ve arrived.
We’re lucky living here; we all know that. There are so many iconic views. The causeways, A1A, The Avenue in Viera, The Port, the downtown districts of Titusville, Cocoa and Melbourne, even the wildlife refuges. But there is another sight not enough of us have experienced, and that is the grand sidewalk entrance to Beachside Fusion at Kiwi. Just walking up to the restaurant makes you feel like you’ve arrived, and the restaurant then certainly keeps that feeling alive. You can sit inside in an intimate dining area overlooking the tennis courts. Or, you can dine al fresco under the fans and tall open-beamed ceilings of the porch between the courts.

Chef Vivian Richards has put her touch on everything.
The Mediterranean salad is simply beautiful and very large, easily a meal unto itself. We then tried the curried shrimp and the citrus-glazed salmon. This must be the fusion of excellent and superb, because both were sublime. Simple, cooked to perfection and presented with sides -- grilled asparagus and seasonal squashes. As we enjoyed the fresh air of dining outside, tennis matches were being played, and friends gathered in a large group at a nearby table. At any given moment, Beachside Fusion at Kiwi can be a restaurant, sports bar, box seats overlooking a match and gathering place for a drink with friends. By the way, we noticed a tomato, basil and mozzarella flatbread being served and it looked very enticing. Try it and tell us how you liked it!
Talk about fusion!
Beachside Fusion at Kiwi is also a great consideration for events large and small. On the Friday we visited, Richards and her staff were preparing for a large wedding the next day. Every part of the club was being used, including the tennis court, where the ceremony would be held. Whether you’re looking for a bite after a doubles match, or a venue for 200 for your next party, reach out to Richards at Beachside Fusion at Kiwi; she’ll make it happen and make it memorable. ◆

Saturday, January 20 Books and Bites – Retired General AJ Tata Location: Cocoa Beach Public Library, 550 N Brevard Ave, Cocoa Beach, FL 32931 Retired General AJ Tata will speak at a Books and Bites lunch in the community room at Cocoa Beach Public Library. This event is free and open to the public. Direct Fire (Kensington Books, Dec. 26, 2017) delivers a story as exciting and adrenaline-charged as it is alarming. With stunning authenticity, General Tata explores the potentials and damage of sophisticated cyberwarfare coupled with terrorist ground forces on American soil as an ISIS cell gathers in the North Carolina mountains to avenge an American strike in Syria—known as Operation Groomsman. Writing code with his uncle and planning logistics, ISIS member Zakir amasses a team focused on the murder or abduction of senior American military personnel and corporate CEO’s along with the capture of a Mack truck carrying a nuclear missile. Zakir and his mysterious commander, known only as Jackknife, seek revenge for the deaths of their Syrian family and friends who traveled in a wedding party and were mistakenly killed in an American strike intended to annihilate terrorist leader Al-Baghdadi. Though largely successful in creating terrifying chaos through drones, assault rifles, surface-to-air missiles and most importantly, cyber-attacks on motor vehicles and banks, the terrorists’ wellorchestrated plan becomes compromised when they fail to capture protagonist Jake Mahegan, a former Delta Force member in search of his kidnapped teammates. Jake teams up with Cassie Bagwell, an Army Ranger whose father General Bart Bagwell and her mother have also been kidnapped. In scenes where life and death hang in the balance on nearly every page, Jake and Cassie confront the near impossible challenge of rescuing their comrades and family and incapacitating the terrorists.

ONE
Last Question
If you ask anyone about SpaceCoast Living, or engage in any kind of discussion about something we’ve written about, it seems the first name that always comes up is Lori Reader. Ask, “Did you see the article about pets in the August issue?” and the answer will undoubtedly start with, “Do you know Lori Reader?” While we here at SCB toil in front of our computers and cameras, Lori is a tornado of activity, crisscrossing the entire county every day. And this is after her morning 5-mile run
SCL: Seriously, Lori? Five miles? Lori: Well, not every morning! But I do something every morning. I start at 6 a.m. and I’m done by 7:30 a.m. I do different things to keep it interesting. I bike, paddle, swim, run, power walk, or hit the gym for cardio and weights. Sometimes its yoga, and sometimes I exercise twice a day. I’m an addict. I also like to scuba, snow ski, water ski and we love being on the boat. SCL: Have you always been an addict? Lori: Actually, yes. I’m the mother of four grown children. When they were younger, I was a personal trainer for a pregnant woman and other moms who wanted to get back in shape after having children. I had a large home gym, and actually ran a business out of my home called, ‘Fit ‘n Fun’ and the moms would all come to me. Even when my kids were at soccer, little league or cheerleading practices, I would get the other parents out of their chairs to power walk around the field instead of just sitting there. SCL: And these days? Lori: I haven’t slowed down. My neighbors in Suntree have seen me exercising for the last 20 years and know me as the neighborhood runner/walker/biker. They tell me I’ve inspired them to exercise and get in shape. Sometimes I don’t even know them, but then they see me out somewhere and tell me. So yes, I’ve always been an addict. I’ve exercised since high school, it’s a way of life for me, like breathing; I rarely miss a day. 80 : spac ec oa st l iv in g
LORI READER SCB SENIOR ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE SCL: What’s your advice for our readers, then? Lori: I can talk about changing routines and exercise all day long, but as I’ve been getting older, I realize it actually helps my mood, as well as my sleeping and eating habits. If someone doesn’t want or have a trainer, they can keep their own journal every day of fitness and weight goals. Go into this New Year happy, trying to live healthy. Be energized and keep those New Year’s resolutions alive. Work towards a healthier life to stay in shape. Eat more salad, fruit, proteins, veggies and yogurt. It all helps. Find the plan and routine that works for you and live it. Lori Reader has been SpaceCoast Living’s Senior Account Executive for over 5 years. She’d love to talk fitness with you, so feel free to email her at lori@scbmarketing.com. If you own a business in Brevard, you likely know her already!
