This is our “Romance” issue. We love featuring couples and their relationships. It is always fun to ask both partners about their success, and sometimes their answers even match! We share insights from these four couples to reinforce the relationships we all have. Even if you’re purposefully unattached, you have people close to you, and we celebrate those relationships as well. Anyone we share our lives with is a treasure. Me? Well, I’m one very lucky husband. My wife and I started our relationship as good friends. Without much compromise, we agree on most everything; food, politics, sports, vacations, even on raising our boys. We even built a new home without conflict. We don’t always agree on money, but I can live with that. She’s (thankfully) just better at that than I am. I didn’t find her on the first try, but that’s for another issue. The point is we did find each other and I can’t imagine life without her. So, let’s get to our February issue… we’re sure you’ll find something to love!

Integrative MEDICINE By Judy Piersall
“You always have choices”
-Judy Piersall
It’s been seven years since I first sought an integrative medicine physician. At 51, I was having night sweats and sleepless nights. Seventeen vials of blood were collected in the initial lab work. Among the many things checked was my Vitamin D. The normal range is 60-100 ng/mL. Mine was 19, dangerously low! Not only can a low level be a precursor to many types of cancer, the doctor couldn’t believe that prior to a recent colonoscopy, the specialist had not checked it. I learned it’s ill advised to have any sort of medical procedure with low Vitamin D. 22 :
S PAC ECOAST L I VING
Even though I’m outside a lot, I have olive skin and I don’t absorb what I need. The darker your skin, the harder it is to absorb Vitamin D naturally. In addition, the use of sunscreen prohibits many of us from getting what we need from the sun. I now take a D3 supplement and my level stays normal. Regardless of age, I can’t stress enough the importance of having a true integrative medicine doctor on your health team. These physicians may have various specialties, such as anti-aging, holistic medicine or wellness. Do your research; they are not created equal. A few conferences and/ or seminars do not equip a physician to be an effective integrative physician. Ask how long they have been in the field. Did they come from another specialty? If they did, what was their reason
for switching? Their answer should be more compelling than for the money. My current integrative medicine doctor has been practicing in the field for 40 years. For most of his career he was ahead of his time; now the times have caught up. A good integrative medicine doctor treats you outside the box of traditional medicine, usually free of pharmaceuticals, and by making simple tweaks that can change your life. The answers are in our blood. It’s highly beneficial to have a doctor that not only knows what bloodwork to order, but also knows how to read it properly and, in doing so, educates you. They empower you to take control of your health. Till next time here’s to healthy living and remember, you always have choices. ◆

Yokoso Nihon e Translation: Welcome to Japan
Story and Photography by Tanya Mutton, Art Director - SpaceCoast LIVING
Japan: a bustling vibrant island with dense cities, imperial palaces, mountainous national parks, thousands of shrines and temples and, of course, exotic foods. I just returned from my second visit with my husband and it was just as exciting as my first. I was lucky enough to visit Tokyo, Yokohama and a small town near Mount Fuji called Gotenba, to name a few. Tokyo
It’s a hustle and bustle lifestyle and if you’re not afraid to mingle and get out and about, you will find that the train system is the easiest and cheapest way to move about. All signs for the trains are in Japanese and English, unless you venture outside the main cities and then you will find, as we did, that you just have to wing it or hope your phone works to translate. I personally love to visit the temples and shrines. Two of my favorites are the Shiba Park Temple and Senso-Ji Temple. I also loved visiting the Imperial Palace, Shibuya Crossing, and Ueno Park, which has museums, temples, monuments and gardens. This year we checked out a couple of the famous themed cafes, the Monster Café and the Owl Café. Tokyo has some of the best shopping and restaurants with a market for everyone. Most restaurants have picture menus, which is a life saver. 24 :

Hotels
Be prepared for hotel rooms to be much smaller than what you are used to and quite expensive in the city areas, especially on the weekend. We stayed in a couple of rooms that were approximately 130 square feet. It was a challenge, but we had a good laugh as we had to plan where each of us would stand, just for the other to get to the bathroom. In Gotenba, a remote town south of Mount Fuji, we stayed in an executive suite, which was much larger and had a wet room with a Jacuzzi and sauna, a massage chair and karaoke all in the room. So the further off the beaten path you go, the more you get for your money.
Beyond Tokyo
Once you get the hang of the trains, the island is your oyster. We popped over to Yokohama, the second largest city in Japan, which is south of Tokyo. We used it as a base to get to Kamakura Shiba Park Temple, Tokyo
Yokohama and the Cosmo Clock 21
where we visited the Buddha of Kamakura, a 43-foot bronze statue that dates from 1252 and the second largest Buddha statue in Japan. Yokohama has the Cosmo Clock 21, a giant Ferris wheel with spectacular views of the city, especially at night. We saw so much, it won’t all fit into this article, but my absolute favorite from both visits was our trip out to Mount Fuji as seen from the Hakone Peace Park. It is an iconic image that we have all seen, but to sit in front of it on a clear day just takes your breath away. Although I took many pictures, none seem to do the breathtaking and majestic view the justice it deserves. For me, Japan was a complete break, with history and excitement at every turn. If you thrive on stepping outside of your comfort zone and immersing yourself in another culture, Japan should be on your bucket list. ◆

Pretty Details... Yes Please! By Jenny Norman
Hello February, we love how you spoil us with fresh bouquets and scrumptious fine chocolates, but what we’re really excited about is this season’s romantic trends! Luckily for us, fashion’s new take on feminine elements are focused on dazzling us with pretty details in unexpected places. No matter your tastes, with everything from ruffles to velvet, bows and embellishments, there’s a myriad of romantic looks for everyone.
Not your 16th century ruffles
1
Ruffles have been around since the 16th century, but they’re back big time in new and fresh ways. You’ll see this romantic detail on everything from sweaters to shoes and handbags in varying doses from bold to delicate …ruffles are everywhere! Something as casual as a sweater can be seen adorned with a dainty ruffle across the front or on the sleeves. Pair this new twist of the sweater with jeans, chandelier earrings and heels and you’ve got a chic date night outfit. For a modern look, wear larger, structural ruffles that serve double duty as accessories on their own.

Velvet Crush
It’s true, velvet no longer is strictly associated with Holiday parties or black evening wear. Designers have introduced the luxe fabric in an array of styles like boots and t-shirts in colors like pretty pink and canary yellow. Its plush texture makes it so cozy to wear yet it adds instant glam to any look. Knowing how to wear velvet is key; you want to balance the look with just the right amount. Wearing velvet boots or heels with a monochromatic ensemble is sure to make a “less is more” statement. Velvet tees worn with jeans are a great way to add a little “wow” to a more casual look. Velvet dresses in longer, flowing romantic silhouettes paired with stilettoes or strappy heels make for an elegant date night. With all these choices, we’ll all still be crushing on velvet well into 2018!
3
Embellished Everything!
Have you noticed the ultrafeminine embellishment details everywhere? Everyday casual pieces are given a makeover with sequins, beading and embroidery. Simple slide on sneakers are trading in their canvas for luxe satin, pearls and rhinestones-such a comfy and new way to be pretty! It seems not an inch of fashion is being left untouched. Even chunky heels get a dusting of glitter and a splash of beading. Gone are the days of drab sweatshirts; they can be spotted adorned with shimmering lace appliques. The embellishment trend continues gracing all accessories. Handbags are certainly not left behind, getting the same treatment! Chandelier earrings are still statement pieces, yet the more ornate kind take the prize. The combination of these beauties with your daywear, make it easy to transition into an evening look. During this season of love, treat yourself and have fun with all these beautiful feminine elements and add a touch of romance to your own wardrobe!

Edible Aphrodisiacs Yummy Treats for the Month of Love By Deb Kemps
Deb Kemps 28 :
S PAC ECOAST L I VING
Most every culture since ancient times has used some type of edible aphrodisiacs. The range is amazing and interesting: everything from chocolate, fruits and vegetables to oysters and spices. With February being the month of “love,” and Valentine’s Day upon us, we’ll focus on yummy treats like chocolate, throughout history the most favored food item as a symbolic aphrodisiac, and a few of my other favorite snacks.
Food of the Gods
Over the years much research has gone into the benefits of chocolate and the compounds that make up this “Food of the Gods.” Scientists have said there are two key components that provide that “loving feeling:” phenethylamine and tryptophan. Working together, they can elevate mood and they release the same stimulants into the brain as when we fall in love. It is said that darker chocolate is favored because it can cause a spike in dopamine, which induces even more feelings of pleasure. Strawberries are at the heart of a very creative myth. It is said that the goddess Aphrodite cried heart-shaped tears upon the death of her lover, Adonis. In many works of art, the strawberry is portrayed as a symbol of sensuality, with loving couples diving in and feeding each other the fruit. Strawberries are very high in Vitamin C and juicy to keep you hydrated. The sugar in strawberries provides a natural energy boost.
It’s Always the Oysters
Oysters gained their reputation with the Greeks because Aphrodite was said to be born from the sea; rising out of the ocean on an oyster shell, half naked,
eating a strawberry I’m sure. The ever-attractive oyster is gaining popularity and the reputation as a libido food very high in zinc and amino acids. Scientists quickly squashed the theory that the shellfish was an aphrodisiac, but recently they have discovered that by harvesting oysters in the spring when the rare amino acids they contain are at the highest levels, oysters and other shell fish could indeed increase sex hormones. Hmmm…
We Can Get Spicier… Ancient Egyptians, sitting right on the crossroads of the ancient spice roads, ate very well, having access to prized aphrodisiacs like coriander
and cumin, both reflecting eternal love and faithfulness. I dare not say that aphrodisiacs are a viable thing when it comes to food and romance -- it appears there are mixed reviews -- but I will say that enjoying Oysters Rockefeller, fresh made Dukkah with some crusty bread and good olive oil never made me sad, and I never would complain about being fed a chocolate covered strawberry. ◆ FEBRUARY 2 018 : 29

THE
Perfect Arrang ement This time of year, you are more likely than ever to see bouquets of flowers anywhere and everywhere you look. It comes as no surprise that Valentine’s Day continues to hold the number one spot when it comes to flower sales and deliveries, with over 224 million roses produced in the U.S. for Valentine’s Day in 2012 alone. But why wait for them to come to you? More than just a seasonal gift, placing a well-arranged bouquet of flowers near your entryway, on your mantle as a piece of holiday décor, or as a centerpiece on your dining room table can instantly make your space feel brighter, warmer and livelier. And while bouquets from a florist can be expensive, learning how to arrange them yourself can cut down on cost, and might just give you a new and unexpected creative outlet. Meaghan Branham 30 :

Bouquet Building Blocks Creating your own arrangements may seem intimidating at first for the exact same reason that they are so fun to put together: you have complete artistic freedom. There are some tips that can help guide you through the process, but keep in mind that your arrangements do not have to be perfect; choose whichever vase, flowers and colors you prefer, and the end result should be perfect for you and your space. When considering these building blocks of your arrangement, remember that the look of the bouquet and the position of the flowers will depend on the shape and size of your vase. When selecting the flowers, it may be helpful to choose a few that are in season, or that come in complementary colors. In the spring, tulips, irises and violets are common, while summer is marked by the appearance of hydrangeas, sunflowers and dahlias. Alstroemeria and marigold signal autumn, followed by poinsettias, amaryllis and glory-ofthe-snow in the winter. Some flowers, such as the carnation, chrysanthemum, daisy and lily are common all year round, and are often used in bouquets.
Creating Your Arrangement Once you have your flowers and vase selected, you can get to work arranging. Cut the stems at an angle, and trim off any leaves that might be below water level, so that they can’t rot and pollute the water. Begin with the biggest flowers in your arrangement, which will serve as the focal point. Work in a circle around the vase from the outside in; many florists use Lazy Susans when creating a bouquet, making it easier to work in these circles and to get a view of the flowers from every angle. Keep the stems longer for the flowers in the middle circles to create the frequently seen domed effect. As you incorporate the other flowers, keep in mind that many florists only use uneven numbers of each type in their arrangement in order to give the arrangement a more organic appearance. Finally, add any filler that you’d like. This could be something as simple as baby’s breath or dusty miller, or something a bit more unconventional. Joanna Gaines of HGTV’s Fixer Upper, for instance, recommends using basil for this step. Flowers don’t just make a great gift for special occasions, they can be used all year round to make every day a bit brighter. Plus, the more arrangements you try, the more likely you will be to make your inner florist proud and wow company with your newly honed skill. ◆

Reorganize, Prioritize and Dream: THE ULTIMATE
CLOSET
By Mallorie Ann Ingram You’re well underway with a New Year’s routine and are more than likely starting to have a firm grasp of setting goals. A detailed list has been made and you know exactly what you plan to accomplish this year and with last month’s introduction to differentiating between deliverables and tasks, you’ve got this covered. One of the most popular and often intimidating projects we tackle is the closet-makeover, aka, cleaning out the closet. It often begins with the question of, “Ok, now where do I start?” Sure, it’s ideal to go ahead and start removing all items, boxes, clothing and clutter. Then, create a pile of items no longer needed and the like. But, at this point, you’re left standing in the middle of an enormous heap of unfamiliar items and the overwhelming dread of “Why did I even start this project?” creeps in. What happens next? First, you must realize that a crucial element is missing. Often, it helps when you see the end goal or final product to help encourage the perseverance of this reorganizing game plan. Here to help set the stage and inspire 32 :

creativity is one of our very own Space Coast residents, Lila Buescher. Ever since a child, she knew exactly what she wanted in a closet space, and today she’s sharing this wealth of knowledge to other like-minded dreamers. “When I was working with my close friend and designer, Kathleen Allen of Winter Park, I knew exactly what I wanted the space to be,” Buescher says. “I wanted natural lighting, cabinets with doors to keep the dust off of clothes, and I did not want to see the shower.” This fairytale room was no doubt the result of continuous planning, creativity and a lifelong dream of endless possibilities. Some of Lila’s favorite features of this unique space are the large windows creating natural light and spectacular views of the river, as well as
the finishing touch of travertine flooring. “Over the past few years, I’ve had several bridal parties prepare for weddings,” Buescher says. “Kathleen was able to capture exactly what I hoped it to be.” From tufted accent chairs with a view to die for, pristine glass casing to store delicate items, and large counter space to work with, it’s no wonder this extension of Lila’s living area is the ideal model for a highly organized and practical closet space. Before you say this room is too utopian for your current agenda, realize that now you have an end goal in mind and tips on how to organize and create a new living space within the home. With all the right tools, your storage conundrum is now manageable and you can check-off one of those New Year’s resolution items. ◆

TITUSVILLE’S
PLAYA LINDA festival of the
ARTS By Michelle Mulak When it comes to original art, no two pieces are exactly alike. The same could be said about original art festivals. Here on the Space Coast, the Cocoa Beach Art Show has a decidedly different feel than the Space Coast Art Festival. The Melbourne Art Festival is different from the Eau Gallie Fine Arts Festival — even though they’re both technically in the same city. ►

In February, it’s Titusville’s turn to establish itself as one of Brevard’s prime artistic destinations. The inaugural Playalinda Festival of the Arts, February 2-4 at the Titus Landings Lifestyle Center, will feature local art, music, performances, technology and films with a Central Florida backdrop. “Working together with area art, film and tech organizations, we are creating an art festival that will inspire new artists for the future,” said Cathy Musselman, executive director of Greater Titusville Renaissance, the non-profit hosting the three-day event. An evolution of the former Arts and Algorithms Festival, version 2.0 aims to highlight the many talented artists and performers in our area, while giving a nod to the technology-based industries our area is known for. The goal is a more regionally focused event featuring local culture, artwork and production. “After hosting the Art & Algorithms festival for four years, I’m excited that we are taking art and technology and combining it with other forms of art to create a festival that embraces art in many configurations,” said Musselman. Throughout the planning process, Musselman and event chairman, Michael John Foster, strived to be inclusive of a wide variety of art forms. The festival highlights traditional, performance, installment, technology and interactive art, and has come together by way of community collaboration. Though the event is hosted by Greater Titusville Renaissance, several local organizations play a key role in making the magic happen. The North Brevard Art League will host the juried art show featuring works from more than 200 local artists. Space Coast Fab Lab will host an interactive STEAM exhibit. KidstART will host the children’s activity tent. Titus Landing and Epic Theaters will host a Florida-centric film festival. Among the live music lineup are performances by central Florida electric violinist, Jared Burnett, the Walden Street Jazz Trio, JT Douglas, Sunday Gospel on the Green featuring the Reflections Band, and more. In other words, it’s stacking up to be a team event. “The festival is a collaborative effort between several organizations,” said Foster, a long-time champion of local arts, collegiate professor of voice and theater, and owner of EA Group. "Titusville and its surrounding areas overflow with talent. The Playalinda Festival of the Arts shines a positive light on those talented people, while providing residents and tourists with a fun excursion and a chance to see the potential in our community.” ◆

It is said that Leonardo de Vinci carried the Mona Lisa with him for almost a decade; seemingly unable to either finish the famous portrait or to part with it. In a similar way, Lynn Duda, an accomplished artist, worked on various pieces she described as her idealized man. Then, to her utter amazement, this individual she had pictured and dreamed of walked into her life, her husband now for over 28 years, Joseph Duda. It was a romance that almost never started. Most people know Joseph Duda as the visionary developer of the Viera community and retired CEO of A. Duda and Sons, his wife Lynn as the owner of the ever-popular Coco’s Gallery and Boutique in Cocoa Village. But theirs is also a story of how love mends hearts and the grace that makes second chances better than the first. “Neither Joseph or I were interested in ‘meeting someone at that time,’ but we had a mutual friend who insisted that we had to get together,” Lynn recalled. “Our first date only happened because of our friend’s subterfuge. He got Joseph and I to come to a fundraising gala, assuring me that he had arranged a date with someone else that evening for Joseph. Which was the only reason I was willing to go. He picked us both up and dropped us off at the event and said he would be back in a few minutes with Joseph’s date for the evening. Well, he never came back.”
Comfortable & Transparent Nevertheless, they had the most delightful evening together. “I have never felt so comfortable and transparent with anyone before in my life. However, I had quite a bit of trepidation, because, here was the very image of this man I had dreamed of,” Lynn said. Joseph was equally smitten and immediately called her to go out again, but Lynn pushed back, finding one reason or another to avoid a second date. Finally, Joseph asked her to go out with him giving her a four-week lead time, “As he was sure I could arrange my schedule with that much advance warning,” she said. “We were simply so comfortable with each other and it is still that way, plus, I’m madly in love with him. I suppose more than anything we were and are best friends. We like being together and miss each other when we are apart. If I get hurt or am struggling, he will pull me out of my shell, so we talk it out. He picks me up when I’m down and I try and do likewise.” “Joseph has exposed me to new interests and we have both grown together so much in our faith walk,” she added. “That has been part of the glue that holds us together; we have this third person involved in our relationship that makes our bond together grow deeper and deeper.” ◆

enna Green tells us, “My best friend's dad and Zach's stepfather were best friends from high school. Years later, I was roommates with Zach’s cousin, Ellen. So, I've always known him off and on. He even worked with my sister for a little while at Gooding’s. He was always in and out of my life.”
About 16 years ago, Jenna came back into town and was single. Zach called her and said "Hey, we're both single finally. Can I take you out?" Their first date was on Thanksgiving. “We went to Meg O'Malley’s because they were open on Thanksgiving,” Jenna said. “We were laughing and he said, ‘I think we should fly to Vegas and get married.’ And I said ‘We could, but I have to pick my daughter up in the morning.’ Zach said, ‘Since we're getting married, can I kiss you?’ I said ‘Sure, you can kiss me.’ And there you go. That was the first and last date. We've been together 16 years, and married 11 this year.”
NOW AVAILABLE “This book delivers useful insights from highly successful business leaders who had the courage to face the barking dogs. This is a must-read for those who desire to succeed and lead. I have read many books on success and business management and have found none that captured my interest like this one. Just read it and see!” Joseph Duda, CEO and Chairman, A. Duda & Sons (Retired) “This book is about more than entrepreneurship and business - it is about life and life’s lessons. So, read, reflect, and apply. But mostly, simply enjoy.” J. Stanley “Stan” Payne C-Level Executive, Attorney and Corporate Strategist
As to the secret of their relationship? “We have date day Friday. We take Fridays off together and we have lunch and we run errands. We try and start off at the gym, and then we pick where we're going to go for lunch. He works a lot, I work a lot, like all families do. It's a great day for us to kind of reconnect and just be together. That's also our chance to try new things and new places.” “I learned from Zach’s dad, Nelson, to try everything. As he says, ‘It’s only one meal in your entire life.’” ◆

hile it’s not uncommon for couples to have first met in college, not many can say that their love connection started in a Macroeconomics class. At the University of Central Florida (2017 College Football National Champions) in a classroom comprised of 300+ students, Tracy and Blake happen to be sitting next to each other and were assigned to the same group on that very day. Some may believe it was happenstance, but they believe the big man upstairs had much grander plans for them. While Blake transferred after his freshman year to the University of Florida, the two reconnected during their senior year. The rest is, as they say, history; after 15 years of wedded bliss they have two amazing children – Emma (12), Bryce (8) and a chocolate lab puppy, Chloe. As a family they enjoy all things sports, between their favorite collegiate, professional and children’s teams there is a always a game to be a part of or a practice to be at. Bryce juggles baseball and basketball; while Emma is strictly softball-focused, joining her first travel ball team, the Viera Pride, last year. The family is also heavily involved in their church and attributes their strong faith as the glue that holds everything together. ◆

I worked with his best friend at the time, which he introduced me and happened to mention I was from Ohio. Cordell immediately sets in on me and starts making fun of Ohio and how it was so lame and cold. I went straight on the defensive defending my home turf. Throughout the night, we would make little comments as we passed each other. I saw he kept looking and conveniently bumping into me when I went for a drink. When I told him I was leaving, he said he’d walk me out. When we got to the door, he made another goofy remark about my home state and just when I tried to hit him with a comeback he leaned in and licked my face and slammed the door. Now we’re happily married with two boys!” ◆

Meet SEYMOUR TARDIFF Seymour was an ensign for the United States Coast Guard for four years. His greatest lessons he learned from being in the Coast Guard were how to work as a team and how to be respectful. Seymour spent time in Stock Island, Florida chasing drug runners. He was also involved in rescuing people during the Mariel boatlift, which was a mass emigration of Cubans who traveled from Cuba’s Mariel Harbor to the United States in 1980. Seymour has been a sales and leasing consultant at Toyota of Melbourne for six years. He is a hard worker who is very kind-hearted and very much loved by his Toyota of Melbourne family. When he’s not working, he takes care of his mom, who has dementia. Seymour enjoys the family atmosphere at Toyota of Melbourne and the sense of humor of his coworkers, which makes coming to work fun!

Choosing the
PERFECT P I E C E BY MEAGHAN BRANHAM Even before February begins, the shelves of every store are filled with the unavoidable hallmarks of Valentine’s Day: chocolates, roses, and countless teddy bears holding embroidered hearts. Despite their widespread popularity, gifts like these typically only last as long as the holiday itself. A day meant to commemorate the love in our lives should lend itself to more thoughtful gift giving, so instead of falling prey to the typical last-minute scramble for the perfect present, consider another Valentine’s Day tradition: jewelry. Personal, timeless, and unique, everyone loves getting a gift that is beautiful and adds a new facet to their love story. It can be a daunting task to find the right piece for your giftee. With all of the options available, the prospect of finding the best one might scare some away from the idea altogether. Jeweler Peter Indorf, of Peter Indorf Designs, has been designing, creating, and selling jewelry since the 1970s, and, with 45 Valentine’s Days under his belt, has helped countless people choose or create the perfect gifts for their loved ones. When doing your Valentine’s Day shopping, he suggests a simple pendant necklace or eyecatching ring. For those looking to gift a unique piece for your valentine, Indorf specializes in customizations; sometimes recycling gemstones from older, never worn heirlooms into a new piece, engraving, or working directly with clients to design the piece. ◆

David Dashi Brings Sought After Dining Experience
Chef ’s Table Adds Flavor To AMICI’S
T
here is a name on the Space Coast that may be right up there in the pantheon of Ruth Chris’ or Shula’s. David Dashi will always have a passion for serving Italian food. But when he developed the concept for his steakhouse, Chef ’s Table, he saw an opportunity to offer something unique to this community. After conducting a survey among his loyal patrons at Amici’s Italian Restaurant in Suntree, Dashi found what a majority of locals wanted was a phenomenal steak without having to drive an hour or two. Moreover, customers wanted to see the preparation of their meals as a part of the dining experience. Chef Dashi set out to create something unique that left nothing behind closed doors. ► FEBRUARY 2018 : 51
New Look and Much More
At the entrance to the steakhouse is an intimate lounge. Customers can have a cocktail on one of the black leather couches or enjoy a menu item at the spacious, granite bar. In the main dining room, an open kitchen allows for conversation to flow throughout the night between Dashi and diners. Cameras streaming to a large flat screen afford customers the opportunity to have a view of the chef in action. “I always wanted my customers, friends and family to feel as though they are at home in my kitchen. I want them to say, ‘I’m going to go to Dave’s kitchen,’ not just Chef ’s Table.” For appetizers, customers rave about the antipasto. Popular entrees include filet mignon, bone-in ribeye, veal chop (one of Dashi’s favorites), and Chilean Sea Bass. Dashi wanted quality food leaving his kitchen, so he obtained a special license from Certified Angus Beef, to prepare and serve only the most select cuts. “If someone wants a filet mignon, and I don’t have the prime beef, I’m not serving it to them,” Dashi said. In addition to five-star food, Dashi is known for offering his customers five-star service. “I’m always concerned that my customers are being taken care of. I created this restaurant to create friendships with people.” Loosely translated, “Amici’s,” appropriately, means “friend” in Italian. “The people who come here, they are famous to me. They put me where I am today. Any person who enters my restaurant, I want to recognize them and get to know them. But the ones 52 : S PAC ECOAST L I V ING
who are here year-round and continue to support me, I care about them. My restaurant is not seasonal – it is built on my great customers.”
From Chef To Entrepreneur
While living in New York, Dashi was a chef at a restaurant called Amici’s, however his heart was always set on becoming a restaurant owner. “I know where I want to go, and I know where I want to be. In anything you do, if you don’t have a goal, it is very hard to be successful.” With that mindset, he bought into the New York location. But while vacationing in Brevard County over a decade ago, he had a new goal in mind. In 2007, Dashi and his wife Valentina opened Amici’s at the Boardwalk of Suntree Plaza. Becoming an area favorite, the couple decided to open another restaurant in Indian Harbour Beach. “The finances were lucrative, everything was great, but it took me away from my family. I’d get up in the morning, have my cup of coffee, then tell my wife, ‘Ok, you work in this restaurant today, and I’ll work in this restaurant.’” After two years, Dashi sold the beachside location to focus on the Suntree establishment. “This [location] is my home. Both my kids and my wife are here. We work together every day, we see each other every day, and our employees have become family to us as well. It is hard to break away from,” he said. Such an attachment to a restaurant comes with sacrifices. Dashi said, “People ask how much free time I have for my family. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would say 3. But if you can agree on sticking together, then everything will balance
out. We set aside time for family days. If you lose touch with each other, all the other things you have, they don’t mean anything.” At the start of his entrepreneurial journey, Dashi faced hard times, but he maintained a positive attitude. “You hear the economy is up and down, but I didn’t want to plant the negatives in my head. I wanted to focus on what I could do tomorrow. There were hard times, but the most important thing for me was always looking forward, and that propelled me. “If you cannot pay your bills today, there’s always tomorrow. I’ve seen places go out of business, and part of the reason is they are listening to what people are bringing from the outside. Things are bad at times, but you have to work it. I worked hard seven days a week, open to close, but it paid off for me. Now, things are beautiful.”
Backing Local Enterprises The chef and restaurant owner said his experiences since moving to Brevard County are unmatched thanks to the loyal, caring and friendly residents. In paying that forward Dashi supports community efforts in return. For several years, Amici’s has participated in the annual golf tournament at Suntree Country Club to benefit Brevard PALS Autism Coalition. In addition, the restaurant has worked with the American Cancer Society, Habitat For Humanity and March of Dimes.
He loves to give back, primarily when it stays in Brevard. “If a person comes here and tries to sell something, my first question is, ‘Are you local?’ I will give them the business if they are. Even if it costs me fifty cents or a dollar more, I make sure it stays local. I am not going to shop outside of Brevard County. I trust the people around me. I believe in supporting locals and your neighbors. Those are the people who will help you grow.” In spite of his success Dashi doesn’t rest on his laurels, “I don’t think for a minute that I can sit back and do nothing. As a business right now, I will continue to focus on where I am and provide to people – through my two different restaurants – a dining experience that they cannot find anywhere else in Brevard.” Although pleased with his recent success at Chef ’s Table, Dashi is considering additional services he can offer to the community. “Coming up, I would love to introduce cooking classes into the restaurant. Customers can come in groups of 15 for a special event, or a husband and wife can come for a date, and I can show them a few things.” That’s Dashi; he always keeps a goal in mind. When he reaches one, he sets another. “I achieved what I wanted to achieve as a restaurant owner, and everything is falling into place. My next goal is to lead someone else in this profession. In the restaurant industry, people need to love it. If you don’t love the business, it is hard to make it.” ◆ FEBRUARY 2018 : 53

VIERA HIGH SCHOOL JOINS DISNEY’S CANDLELIGHT PROCESSIONAL AT EPCOT PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEVEN HICKS The Candlelight Processional on December 27th, at Epcot’s America Gardens Theatre, was a breathtaking retelling of the Christmas story in words and music complete with a 50-piece orchestra. The story of Christmas was told by Jaci Velazquez, an award-winning contemporary Christian singer. The choir consisted of members of Disney’s Voices of Liberty (red & black attire), the Cast Member choir (green robes), and visiting Viera High School choir (gold robes).

CELEBRATES
YEARS
WITH A TRICK OR TWO UP THEIR SLEEVE! By Steve Hicks

S
paceCoast Living met with the special events co-chairs on The King Center’s board of directors’ fundraising committee. It was the week before Christmas, and the EFSC campus was buzzing with activity preparing for a commencement the next day. But there was more going on than pomp and circumstance. Behind the curtains, board members and staff were preparing for this milestone event, the King Center’s 30th anniversary celebration. The celebration will occur in two parts. First, on March 4th, “The Illusionists – Live from Broadway” will perform. This mind-blowing spectacular showcases the jaw dropping talents of five of the most incredible illusionists on earth, Jeff Hobson, Kevin James, Colin Cloud, An Ha Lim, and Jonathan Goodwin. Full of hilarious magic tricks, death-defying stunts and acts of breathtaking wonder, this show has shattered box office records across the globe and dazzles audiences of all ages with a powerful mix of the most outrageous and astonishing acts ever seen on stage. The King Center also invites you to attend a magical cocktail party after the show at the Eau Gallie Yacht Club. A few weeks later, on April 24th, “Kinky Boots” takes the stage after a pre-show cocktail party in the Center’s rotunda. “Kinky Boots” is Broadway’s huge-hearted, high-heeled hit with songs by Grammy and Tony winning pop icon, Cyndi Lauper. The show is about friendships and the belief that you can change the world when you change your mind. Inspired by true events, “Kinky Boots” takes you from a gentlemen’s shoe factory in Northampton to the glamorous catwalks of Milan. Talking to the committee members presented a strong sense of pride. Many of these members have served for many years and have seen the center grow and evolve. Executive Director Steve Janicki said, “Just looking back over the first 30 years, I think we've done a great job bringing arts and entertainment, concerts, and shows, and everything to the community. I think, overall, we've exceeded Dr. King's expectations. Raising the money, building it and everything. I don't think anybody at that time had any idea what this could've turned out to be... and I’m really happy to be part of it. Not to rest on their successes, the committee admits they're in the middle of a generational shift. Janicki adds, “Traditional audiences are getting a little bit older, as are the acts that we've come to love. We've made a conscious effort to program toward younger audiences.” Committee member Darcia Jones Francey said, “Studies show younger audiences have a whole different set of expectations.” ► FEBRUARY 2018 : 71
Autumn Shrum, the King Center’s Director of Marketing and Public Relations said, “The Illusionists” is the kind of show that brings a lot of first timers into the building, and we try to get them to keep coming back. That's the goal, and that's sort of how we look to the future of growing our audience.” Jones Francey added, “But we hear that many of our longtime supporters love Broadway shows, so we’ve brought in two great shows for our 30th anniversary.”
FRONT: Bill Potter, King Center Board of Directors Chairperson SECOND ROW (L TO R): Darcia Jones Francey, King Center Board of Directors Fundraising Committee Chair, Kim Vice, 30th Anniversary Co-Chair, Autumn Shrum, Director of Marketing & Public Relations THIRD ROW (L TO R): Myra Haley, 30th Anniversary Co-Chair, Steve Janicki, Executive Director 72 : spac ec oa st l iv in g
We’d be remiss to not mention the purpose of these shows. Kim Vice, 30th Anniversary Co-Chair told SCL, “to celebrate 30 years is one thing, but if we're to build our future we have to raise money. People don't understand that a ticket doesn't nearly cover the cost of the show and the operation of the venue. It only covers about 30% of the cost of the show incrementally. We must make up the rest of that revenue to make a profitable King Center. It's the job of not only the board but the community at large if they want to keep this gem of the performing arts. They must get on board, and understand whether their donation is $10 or $10,000, it's all very important to our success, because the King Center is a not for profit.” ◆

MARTIN SEXTON - In the Studio Theatre
ABBA MANIA
Remember that mix tape your friend made you way back when - the one that's etched in your soul? Martin Sexton's new album, “Mixtape of the Open Road,” is that musical crosscountry trip, blazing through all territories of style, as you cruise through time and place. From 1996 to 2002, Sexton released “Black Sheep,” “The American,” “Wonder Bar,” and “Live Wide Open.” The activity and worldwide touring behind these records laid the foundation for the career he enjoys today with an uncommonly loyal fan base. His songs can be heard in many feature films and television including NBC’s Scrubs, Parenthood and Showtime’s hit series, Brotherhood. In 2007, Sexton began his most successful years to date with the release of his studio offering “Seeds.” In 2010, the album “Sugarcoating” found this one-of-a-kind-troubadour doing what he does best: locating larger truths. The accolades continued when Billboard called Sexton’s version of “Working Class Hero” for the Lennon tribute/ benefit in 2010 “chill-inspiring.” Sexton’s incendiary live show, honest lyrics, and vocal prowess is what keeps fans coming back for more!
ABBA MANIA the tribute takes you back in time by recreating one of the world’s finest pop groups in a live stage performance. It has now been 31 years since ABBA last toured and it was the hottest ticket in town. Today ABBA MANIA continues to grip the nation with countless tributes on television, radio and of course, with the hugely popular stage hit Mamma Mia, now a feature film, there are no signs that this popularity is slowing down! ABBA MANIA continues to tour the globe, enjoying great success, with venues selling out long before the show hits town. We look forward to seeing you at the show and will ensure that you’ll be “having the time of your life.”
DANIEL O’DONNELL
YAMATO, DRUMMERS OF JAPAN
It’s no surprise that Daniel O’Donnell is one of the best loved artists of our time, both at home and abroad. He has had a remarkable career. The Irish singer made record-breaking chart history earlier this year by becoming the first recording artist in the history of the UK Artist Album Chart to have charted at least one new album every year since 1988, an unprecedented and unbroken 30 year span, surpassing everyone from Michael Jackson, the Rolling Stones, Madonna and Irish strongholds, U2. Daniel burst into superstardom in the USA & Canada back in 2002 with his first ever PBS special – The Daniel O’Donnell Show. That began a special relationship between Daniel and PBS and since then, he has recorded a further thirteen specials, with ‘Back Home Again’ being his fourteenth one in 2016. This fantastic selection of 32 / 37 songs is presented on this 2 CD / 37-track DVD set recorded and filmed in Ireland, on this new US TV special. The concert also features Daniel’s long-term singing partner, Mary Duff. After more than 30 years in the spotlight as an engaging entertainer, he is still in love with performing and with audiences the world over!
Yamato’s creativity and innovation conquer theatres around the world! A group of dozens of players start their performance by hitting a Japanese taiko drum made from a large 400 yearold tree. They move their whole bodies to strike the drum with everything in their souls, creating a powerful surge of energy. Their live performances are so full of intensity that they make people's bodies jump and their hearts race faster. Audiences are overwhelmed by the beat of the music, as their bodies are uplifted in sync with the powerful sounds. This group, from beautiful Nara Prefecture in Japan, is able to exhibit great originality and innovation through this traditional Japanese musical instrument, the wadaiko (Japanese drum). This is the epitome of the Japanese spirit, a roaring sound that will make you experience new exciting adventures.

STAYIN’ ALIVE

Thursday, February 22, 8 p.m. Tickets starting at $32.25 (inclusive of fees) Produced by Music Works, Inc.
Sunday, February 25, 7 p.m. Tickets starting at $48 (inclusive of fees)
STAYIN' ALIVE offers to their audiences the songs and sights of a full Bee Gees play list, singing blockbusters such as "Night Fever," "Jive Talkin'," "How Deep Is Your Love," "You Should Be Dancing," "Nights on Broadway," and "Stayin' Alive." In addition, they perform softer poetic ballads such as "I Started a Joke," "Massachusetts," "Fanny Be Tender," "Words," and "To Love Somebody," among other great hits.
Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo is a company of professional male dancers performing the full range of the ballet and modern dance repertoire, including classical and original works in faithful renditions of the manners and concepts of those dance styles. The comedy is achieved by incorporating and exaggerating the foibles, accidents, and underlying incongruities of serious dance. The Trocks’ inspired blend of a loving knowledge of dance, impeccable comic approach, and the astounding fact that men can, indeed, dance en pointe without falling flat on their faces has brought them critical acclaim. This company of professional male dancers delights audiences around the world parodying classical works from Swan Lake to Giselle. Combining a loving knowledge of dance with a wicked comedic sensibility, the Trockaderos will offer a buoyant and hilarious evening for young and old. They love to bring pleasure of dance to the widest possible audience. They will, as they have done for forty years, “Keep on Trockin’.”
STAYIN' ALIVE is the largest and most definitive production of its kind, offering big screen video clips, photos and dazzling imagery. STAYIN' ALIVE has played intimate settings as a six piece band and huge venues with a 62 piece orchestra. STAYIN' ALIVE is the quintessential tribute band to the Bee Gees, capturing the excitement of live performance and the tender subtleties of the human voice!

ONE
Last Question
BY STEVEN HICKS Like any group of workmates, as we’ve grown to know each other better, we’ve also gotten to know the relationships we all have outside of the office. Some of us are in our twenties and some are approaching sixty. We have some long-standing marriages, a few who are relative newlyweds, and single people as well. So, not being an expert myself, I thought I’d ask my friends here at SCL what they thought it took to have a lasting relationship. Here they are in no particular order. Steven Hicks (Senior Editor) and wife, Dina. Married 10 years this August. “We began our relationship as employer and employee, then became good friends. Dating followed. First and foremost, we respect each other. Laugh whenever you can, enjoy a bottle of good wine and the talking that comes with it. I realize every day that she is the best thing that ever happened to me, and I let her know it. Being thankful for the life you have together gets you through anything.” Tanya Mutton (Art Director-SpaceCoast Living) and husband, Tim. Married for 27 Years.
Communication and humor. “For 20 years we moved around from pillar to post with the Army; this forced us to rely solely on one another and figure everything out as a unit, it was tough sometimes, but with a sense of humor we made it work and it has carried on now that Tim has retired from the military." Eric Wright (Publisher) and wife Susan, married for 36 years. “My wife Susan and I have been married for 36 years. I have learned that knowing my wife is God’s favorite person in the world: a) Makes me feel mighty lucky that I was entrusted with the best and b) To be very careful to treat her in a way that reflects that insight.” Jeff Piersall (Owner and CEO) and wife Judy. Married for 35 years. “You are never allowed to quit on the same day. And keep your faith as the centerpiece of your relationship.”
80 : spac ec oa st l iv in g
Tracy Conner (Production Manager) and husband, Blake, together 17 years. Married for 15. “Have open lines of communication on everything, laugh often, make “date night" a monthly priority in the busyness of everyday life. But most importantly, stay grounded in your faith because your marriage will be thrown all kinds of curve balls and it’s comforting to know God has all things under control…especially your marriage!” Lori Reader (Senior Account Executive) and fiancée Brian. Engaged for two years, together for seven. “Friendship, laughter, trust and respect are the first ingredients in our recipe for success. It is then sprinkled with common interests, and lots of space. We compliment and support each other regarding our individual relationships with our six adult children, our friends, our work obligations and our alone time.” A game often played between them is called, “I’m Funnier Than You.” It’s their competition to make each other laugh over silly things. They also try to do small, kind gestures for each other. Lori says the final ingredient for their successful relationship, “is simply love.” Nevin Flinchbaugh (Art Director-SpaceCoast Business) and wife, Tasha. Together for five years, married just over one. “Never go to bed fighting. Being tired the next day is a small cost considering the alternative.” Cherise Czaban (VP of Business Development) and husband, Steve. Married for 32 Years. Commitment – "commitment to our family and to each other and remembering what’s truly important."
