Is it true that Varicose Veins are a sign of a medical issue? Yes. Please do not Ignore signs of leg varicose veins. If you notice bulging veins, you have a significant medical condition. Bulging indicates vein dilation. Constant dilation causes vein walls to weaken, leading to further damage. This includes swelling with tissue damage, permanent pigment changes.

EDITOR Hi everyone,
Here we are again, approaching one of the Space Coast’s most popular seasons where the outside temperature is just right, the sandy beaches are fresh, and the entertainment is in ample supply. I don’t know about you, but this breath of fresh air is quickly becoming my favorite part of living in Brevard. What’s different this spring? That would be me. Last month, I was warmly welcomed by our new publisher, Steve Hicks, and this month I’m sending you a lovely greeting too. I can’t express enough how excited I am to bring you fun ideas and the latest happenings going on in our area this year, one of which includes our annual cover model issue. We met some amazing women whose stories and beauty have left many speechless, to say the least. Don’t miss the kick-off of my new Inspiration column in our UpFront section too. I’d love to hear from you, so please send me an email and I’ll write back as soon as I can.

Alternatives
By Judy Piersall
When my husband and I were raising our three children, we didn’t allow them to watch TV during the week. So, to avoid the “Do as I say, not as I do” conundrum, we stopped watching too. It became a habit that stuck, except for sports, of course (ROLL TIDE!). That’s when I see commercials. My head especially shakes at the ones for pharmaceuticals. Drugs have side effects. Don’t believe me? Just pay attention to the ads for them the next time you’re watching TV, reading a magazine, or listening to the radio. The list of side effects is usually longer than the benefits of the drug. One is left with more information about the possible detrimental results of taking it than the benefits. My experience has taught me that most drugs have a non-prescription alternative that can perform the same, but without side effects. While I realize there’s a real need for pharmaceuticals in some cases, I do believe they are overprescribed, often unnecessary, and generally treat the symptom instead of the underlying cause. I take one prescription daily - a bioidentical hormone at bedtime. Subcutaneous pellets complete the trifecta. Everything else in my daily regimen is non-prescription and is geared toward what my individual bloodwork shows is needed. There’s no guessing on what I should or should not take; labs drawn every six months indicate what tweaks and changes are needed. Having someone on your healthcare team that thinks outside the box of traditional medicine is invaluable. If you have a physician that can’t or won’t individualize your care by operating beyond protocols and charts, or who tells you, “There is no other option,” it’s time to consider a different path. Your quality of life could depend on it. Until next time, here’s to healthy living, and remember, you always have choices. ◆

Historic City Center of Zurich with the famous Fraumunster Church

Alpine Country Switzerland
By Kathryn Varnes
We flew into Zurich and rented a car where we spent a couple of nights taking in all to see in one of the world’s premiere financial capitals. Zurich is divided into the left bank and right bank by the Limmat River, which flows down from Lake Zurich. A very cosmopolitan city, Zurich has a main train station which can take you anywhere in Europe, such as elegant stores, fabulous restaurants and the famous Fraumunster Church, which dates back to the ninth century. The chance to see the Marc Chagall windows is worth the visit alone as well as the festive mix of locals and travelers from all over Europe and the world. 20 : s pac ec oa st l iv ing
City Center of Lucerne and the Chapel Bridge over Lake Lucerne
Switzerland is a beautiful alpine country snuggled around France, Germany and Italy. Hence, it is an ethnically diverse country, and you will hear four or more languages spoken there (English is the primary language of Geneva and Zurich) depending on which part of the country you may be located.
Kathryn Varnes
Another fabulous Zurich site is St. Peter’s cathedral with its big spire and beautiful clock that faces the city. We spent time meandering through the cobblestone streets of old town Zurich enjoying the architecture, shopping and eats. Typical Zurich cuisine is similar to that of Germany – sausages, pork knuckles, sauerkraut, pretzels and beer. From Zurich, we drove to Lucerne and what we found to be the most charming Swiss town. Lucerne is most famous for its chapel bridge, which was built in the 14th century. Despite some fires and local conflicts, much of the original bridge and its artwork have survived. The bridge has a water tower in the middle of it that at one time served as a town prison. Not the easiest place to get to as our GPS had us driving in circles is Lucerne’s Lion Monument, which was carved into the side of a mountainside by a Danish sculptor in the early 19th century. The giant work of art features a dying lion and is a memorial to the Swiss Army Guards who were massacred in Paris during the French Revolution. It really is a site worth seeing.
Our third stop was in the lovely little town of Gruyere – yes, home of the famous cheese. We stayed in one of the most beautiful areas there and in Fribourg where its namesake 12th century castle is the prime attraction. The cobblestone street leading up to the castles is closed to automobiles and is flanked by cute stores and restaurants. The smell of Roquefort and Gruyere cheese wafts from practically every storefront. One dish we enjoyed on our New Year’s Eve dinner was made in a skillet combining eggs, potatoes and lots of Gruyere. Combine that with fantastic raclettes and fondues, and we were in cheese heaven. Another can’t-miss stop in Gruyere is the Cailler Chocolate factory and museum. This is the place where milk chocolate was first produced using the milk from local cows, and they offer an informative and entertaining tour. The best part of the tour was the next to last stop where you can sample any and all of their types of chocolate before ending it all in their gift shop where we supplemented the local economy with lots of yummy gifts to take home. ◆

The Time to Shine is Now
TADEA STYLES
By Jenny Norman
One of the up and coming trends that is so hot right now is the fashion editorial style senior photography session. This unique style allows teenagers to experience what it would be like to be on a fashion photo shoot. Complete with in studio and different locations, photographers collaborate with their clients to find the perfect spots around town that will reflect the theme of the shoot. With fashion being so important in a teen’s life as they strive to define their individuality, there are several looks involved in the editorial- style photo shoot to showcase each graduate’s true personality. Many photographers now work with teams of hairdressers, makeup artists and wardrobe stylists who offer their expertise to give teens that polished professional look which is essential when making the investment into high quality photography. So rather than just showing up with having done their own hair and makeup and picking out their own outfits, these grads get completely pampered and glammed up from head to toe. Guys are certainly not left behind. They get to showcase their love of sports, hobbies and cars at their photo sessions too. The beauty of it all is that these styled high school senior photo shoots are tailored to the grads and who they are; it is their time to shine. Parents especially love seeing their teens feel so confident when their self-esteem is boosted by such a fun and personal experience. What a unique way to celebrate one of the most exciting times in the lives of high school seniors and what an amazing way to capture these memories forever! ◆ Jenny Norman is a freelance personal and fashion stylist on the Space Coast. After working for a Boston designer styling brides for their most important day and helping friends update their wardrobe, Jenny was inspired to style men, women and children in Central Florida. Visit Tadea Styles on Facebook and Instagram an for more information, contact Jenny at Tadeastyles@gmail.com.

High school senior portraits are not what they used to be. So much has changed from the days of in-studio sessions filled with feather boas, cheesy foil backdrops and unnatural poses. Senior photography has evolved to cater to each graduate’s tastes, hobbies and personality. Graduates want their portraits to capture who they are at this very important moment in their lives.

Personal Grocery Shoppers 24 : spac ec oa st l iv in g
By Deb Kemps In today’s hurried times it is hard to find food products that are healthy, delicious and easy to prepare. I know I do not have the time to comb the grocery store looking for the latest and greatest in food products. Something that has truly made a difference for my grocery shopping choices is my Publix “personal shoppers.” Do you have your own Publix personal shoppers? I have several in my local store: Betty, Lynn and so many others. Wherever you shop, get to know your grocers.
So, as the story goes, Kim in the Publix produce department (one of my shoppers) turned me on to a great new product: “Straight from The Root: 100% Organic” vegetables prepared in the French style of sous vide. This low-heat cooking method allows the vegetables to maintain their integrity in nutrients, texture and, most importantly, flavor. The folks at Straight from The Root produce a variety of vegetables that are fully-cooked, non-GMO, preservative-free, and you can warm them in their own
BPA-free bag. They currently offer beets, carrots, potatoes, butternut squash and sweet potatoes. I have tried them all and they don’t disappoint. A convenient, healthy and delicious option. The beets are my favorite; they taste so fresh. I enjoy them as a snack direct from the package or as an addition to my salads. I provided a quick and easy recipe below for a beet salad and a recipe for a refreshing beet cocktail. I hope you have a chance to try them while the folks at your grocery store do the shopping for you. ◆
Stop Getting Overlooked! Consumers seek brands that they connect with and making that connection is the key to elevating your brand.
Warm Beet & Goat Cheese Salad 1 package of “Straight from The Root” beets, chopped Arugula lettuce Candied pecans or walnuts Dried cranberries Crumbled goat cheese My favorite is Raspberry vinaigrette dressing • Warm the beets • Combine all remaining ingredients and add warm beets. Salt and pepper to taste.
Beet Mule
2 ounces vodka 1 ounce fresh lemon juice ¾ ounce beet ginger syrup (combine simple syrup with pureed beets and pureed ginger root to taste) 2 ounces tonic water Mix all ingredients and pour over ice. Garnish with mint.

Around the World by Meaghan Branham
E
arlier this year, I packed my bags and finally put my passport to use on my first-ever international trip: My first stop was Venice, followed by Paris, for a total of 10 days. After months of flipping through guidebooks along with nearly obsessive viewings of “An American in Paris” and “Under the Tuscan Sun,” I felt like I was as prepared as I could ever be for this adventure. And I was wrong: I couldn’t have anticipated exactly how breathtaking every corner of both Venice and Paris would be. Most of my time was spent in complete awe—of the history, the architecture, the food, the wine, the fashion, and the terrifying Parisian traffic. Even of the apartments I stayed in—not grand 26 : s pac ec oa st l iv in g
or luxurious, but with a style definitively unlike most American décor. In Venice, deep orange silk upholstery with gold embroidery on antique chairs and a faded multicolored rug echoed the color of the buildings lining the canals. Coupled with the white walls and exposed wood beams, it struck me as effortless and charming and bursting with character and history, just like the city itself. In Paris, the soft, almost pinkish-white color of the walls, clean-lined furniture, and light fabrics let the architecture of the centuries-old building shine above everything else. It was effortless, in exactly the way I’d always imagined that quintessential Parisian charm to be.
Living briefly in these spaces, it occurred to me that the way we decorate our homes speaks to not only our own personal tastes and histories, but those of the culture and lifestyle we are exposed to. I wanted to take a quick tour around the world to see some of the more popular trends in design and lifestyle in other countries to spark both your home inspiration and your wanderlust.
Hygge:
Regardless of whether you’ve heard the Danish word before, chances are you’ve seen an image or two online in recent years inspired by this philosophy. It’s an approach that encompasses more than just design: it’s a lifestyle; one that the Scandinavian nation has been endorsing for years, but that only recently made its way onto our radar. Described by the experts at hyggehouse. com as a “feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out, ordinary or extraordinary as cozy, charming or special.” This “experience” is typically translated into the language of interior design with cuddly fabrics, rich textures, warmth and atmosphere often provided by candles and carefully placed soft lighting. It’s about creating a space where you and your loved ones feel welcome and relaxed, so that you can appreciate the beauty in even little moments and rituals—like your morning cup of coffee.
Riad:
While the word itself actually refers to a Moroccan home built around an exposed courtyard or garden, it also denotes a design and lifestyle approach that emphasizes privacy and reflection. The courtyards themselves are private places for family to come together and spend time, so furniture faces inward and is placed close together, and most windows and doors face this secure space. Rich colors, shapes like domes and arches, and stunning tile patterns are often used here as well. As water is valued as vital and life giving, the centerpiece is usually a fountain, and plants and flowers feature prominently.
French Modern:
The style that sparked my dive into international interiors. It turns out that part of the appeal of the French modern style is the difficulty to define exactly how to achieve it. A bit undone and effortless, a bit glamorous and sophisticated, the spaces in this category seem best defined by a certain “je ne sais quoi.” Overall, neutral colors, including creams and soft whites, keep it simple, and allow the beautiful architecture of these homes to be the focal point. Mixing and matching a few quality and classic pieces creates an atmosphere that is both relaxed and elegant. A touch of glamour brought in with a few gold accents or a chandelier elevates the space even further. ◆ APR I L 2 018 : 27
What Will Inspire You in 2018? upfront inspiration
By Mallorie Ann Ingram Have you ever had that one person in life that inspires you? Creatives call this a muse; someone or something that stirs up the artistic juices and gets the wheels spinning. This month, I’ve got something in mind that will help jump-start your inspirational thought process. With our active Space Coast community, sunny weather, and just the right amount of sight-seeing activities around to stay busy, it’s safe to say there is plenty to do and see here in Brevard. But I want to take this one step further. For the next several months, I plan to visit some of our local gems, discover the hidden ones, and learn new tips and tricks to send out to you, my readers. From watercolor painting classes to gardening to learning how to make a killer shrimp bisque, I have quite a running list on the agenda. After all, we can always use a little inspiration in our daily lives, so here goes!
What’s the first, big inspiration topic on the calendar this month? Outdoor gardening. Before you snicker and say “well, that’s not that exciting,” I want to shine some light on the origin of this inspiration. I come from a long line of green-thumb gardening gurus who, for whatever reason, did not pass that torch along to me. Last month, I was sitting on my front patio with my chocolatelab pup, listening to the nearby ocean waves while salt air swept through my palm trees. At that moment, I realized I needed to improve my home’s curb appeal. Growing up, I witnessed my mom and grandfather plant elaborate gardens, something that always intimidated me, but my mom made a great point: start with a potted-plant garden. If you’re at all familiar with the latest trends of outdoor living spaces and what is “in,” you see
this concept left and right. Furthermore, it is practical for the not-so-botanical crowd. I visited some local landscaping shops and hardware stores with the sheer purpose of finding plants and flowers that spoke to me. Low and behold, I came home with a variety of plants, ranging from pink petunias to sweet basil. Fun fact: You don’t have to buy everything brand new to create a potted-plant garden. Instead, recycle unique pieces that are collecting dust around the house. I used an old porcelain fountain, no longer working, to house my pink begonias and found some old bricks in the shed to form a planter
designed with character. It’s still a work in process, but it was the bright-blue Saturday sky accompanied by some insightful thoughts from my mom that inspired me to tackle a much needed curb appeal project. Now, ask yourself this: what inspires you? Identify it and hold on to it because acting upon your inspirations will allow you to thrive in everything you do. Be sure to keep an eye out for next month’s Inspiration. Interested in a sneak peek? Send me a shout on Facebook and I’m happy to bring you along for the journey! ◆

2018 Business Blastoff Challenge
Junior Achievement's 30 : s pac ec oa st l iv in g
Every February, Junior Achievement of the Space Coast (JA) holds its annual Business Blastoff Challenge, bringing together Brevard high school students in a product development competition culminating in a presentation similar to “Shark Tank.” On February 13, 23 entries from 5 high schools met at FIT for the preliminary rounds. Teams presented their concepts, marketing ideas, financials and even working prototypes when possible to pitch a team of judges. Each team consisted of from one to six members. They were judged based on their short product and “ask” videos, PowerPoint presentations, actual product prototypes, pitch to the judges (posing as potential investors) and the viability of their financials. From the 33 entries, five were selected to advance to the final round at the Cocoa Village Playhouse on February 20. The judges for the final presentations were Jim Barfield, president and CEO of Luke & Associates as well as Brevard County Commission member; Leslie Tibbets, vice president of Bank of America; attorney Mark Malek, CEO and managing partner of Widerman Malek; and Jim Clamons, retired vice president of engineering of Harris Corporation. Anne Conroy-Baiter of JA was the host and emcee for the night, hosted by Bank of America, Certified General Contractors, Balda Family Foundation, Florida Tech and The Viera Company. This year’s winning presentation was from TransportEZ. A Bayside High School team, TransportEZ is Riley Snyder, Joseph Harmon and Chris Zarraonandia. Led by their teacher Aaron Mitchell and JA Volunteer Larry McIntyre, TransportEZ presented a portable lap desk for students that easily connects to backpack straps allowing work to be done anywhere while on the go.

Designed to rehydrate, refresh, and nourish, our organic formula reflects our timeless approach to beauty: Simple, practical, and effortless. “You’ll love it when people ask what you’re doing differently,” Judy Piersall Co-Founder SANZ Skincare
Snyder said, “It was pretty cool, being able to basically make our own business from an idea we had, and JA allowed us to have that opportunity.” Harmon added to that, mentioning, “We got to spend months as a team, preparing for a large project. Got to the finals, which was a surprise. Some of the competition had me a little worried.” Since the finals, the young men have been talking to Malek, a patent attorney, and even a chiropractor about making sure their product was safe. The team was asked to speak at the recent Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame Dinner, “and on the bus, going back to the cars, he wanted to look at our product, to verify if it was actually good for posture,” added Zarraonandia. “Another guest that night came to us and said that he might be a potential investor if we did want to take our company any farther.” When asked if they’d like to see this product actually come to market, the three added, “I think it would be great,” “That would be cool, very cool,” and of course, “I've had at least ten situations in the last week where I would have loved to have one with me.” These young entreprenuers have a bright future ahead, and they’ll be able to work on a desktop wherever they go. ◆

Panzak suffered with a compulsive disorder called trichotillomania, which causes hair loss. Being a teenager can be difficult and this certainly did not help her self-confidence. She opened up to her mom during her junior year of high school and since then, she’s had the support to get stronger. After a year and a half of letting her hair grow back, she decided it was time to pursue modeling. This life-changing experience has molded Panzak into the beautiful and talented person she is today. ◆

“Since modeling is a career that involves ostentatious vanity, it is absolutely necessary to appear confident (even when you are not). Moreover, you need to have lots of assertiveness to be different and stand out from the crowd.” —unknown author It was this very mindset that encouraged TullyTennant to not only apply for this model search but also be more confident within herself and learn to stand out from the crowd. ◆ A PR I L 2 018 : 37

You might have seen them perform at past Super Bowl events or even during the Olympics years ago. Maybe you’ve attended a show and seen them live. This year, the popular cast of Up With People arrived in Brevard County and once again, has filled the air with an upbeat message guaranteed to make quite an impact within the community. This family-friendly entertainment has been known for sending a positive message and influence throughout service projects, not to mention touching various lives, especially when it comes to some of our own Space Coast residents. There’s no doubt, various young people will begin signing up for their own experience to join Up With People after seeing the cast perform at Eau Gallie High School last month. In fact, Brevard’s very own Monica Shah did just that. All it took was watching the performance 20 years ago in Vero Beach; she was hooked and said she just had to do this. “The program had the message of using music to bring world peace,” Shah says. “No matter where we’re from, we can work together to make the world a better place.” Shah traveled to nine different countries and over 80 cities while staying with different host families along the way. Not only is the show designed to raise proceeds for the beneficiary, in this year’s case, the Children’s Hunger Project, but also to use music as a universal language to talk about global issues, women’s rights, racism and the like. “Sometimes people think you need money to make a difference, but we all have a little bit of time,” Shah says. Between living with different people from different backgrounds, cultures, and lifestyles, it’s amazing what can be learned. “Music touches people more than just preaching to them,” Shah says. “It’s definitely the best experience you just can’t learn in a classroom.”

“My passion to give my time to children with special needs and give back to the community stemmed from this program. I went to this show in 1998 not knowing what Up With People was at all and immediately fell in love with the show full of color, music, high energy and positivity. I interviewed right after the show and was blessed to be selected to travel. I told my parents I wanted to travel with the program and their response was ‘you need to go to college, get a job and get married.’ Fortunately they discussed my desire with some friends and realized this would be an experience of a lifetime. I am forever grateful my parents let me pursue my desire to travel with the group. Thanks to Up With People, I have a broader understanding of many other cultures and now have friends in 23 other countries. I developed personally and learned how to communicate with people even when we spoke different languages." “After traveling in Up With People, I attended Georgia Tech for four years and stayed in Atlanta for 16 years, eventually falling into my family’s footsteps with the gas station and convenience store industry. I wanted to give back to the community that made my family successful. My first way of giving back was to bring the group to Brevard. I am so glad they got into some of the public schools this time and is getting in even more local nonprofits to spread their service. It’s also great that we are getting local community members and employees of some of the sponsors out volunteering with the cast during their one week in Brevard.”

“My name is Lieke van den Berg and I am 25 years old, from Noordwijk, the Netherlands. I studied cultural anthropology and development sociology with a masters in global economy and culture and documentary film making. I got involved with Up With People almost two years ago, when they went to the Netherlands, and I hosted Lucia from Mexico and Kara from Colorado for a week. The reason I decided to join is because I believe that if we bring people together and start conversations to help us understand each other, we can bridge cultural differences, appreciate each other, and create peace. Last semester, I visited Zionsville, Indiana; Mexico City; and Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, to organize the visit of the group. I very much enjoy the work as it takes me all over the world and allows me to meet all different people, building friendships for life.” Part of Lieke’s role is to help find host families for cast members, coordinate the logistics involved with the program, and get the program out in the open before their week of service. “Even though we are all from different countries, we can all stand up on stage and share the same message,” Lieke says. “So, if we can do it, it shows that others can do it too.” Lieke also says it’s important to highlight the projects coming to Brevard because it’s crucial for them to be ongoing where people continue serving within the community, even after the cast is gone.

| Company Profile
Glenn S. Sandler TITLE: Owner and Founder COMPANY: G.I. Tax FOUNDED: 2012 LOCATION: Melbourne WEBSITE: www.gitax.com
GI Tax, “America’s Finest Tax Service,” was formed in 2012 as necessary competition for the American Middle Class tax service business. There are tax companies that have been preparing tax returns for Americans for many years, but over the past few years they have been losing the respect and confidence of many of their customers. Reasons include poor training, a poor business model, and, in the words of their customers, people preparing the tax returns “just don’t care.” The company’s business model is simple: Make sure all customers are fully satisfied. First, every client must feel like they are treated like family. Second, with a 100 percent guarantee, ensure customer tax returns are fully correct and that “no dime is left behind.” Most importantly, every GI tax office and its employees support the U.S. military and the American Dream. GI Tax commits to supporting veterans by donating a portion of every tax return fee to support various military charities. Over the past six years, donations have amounted to more than $30,000. Since its inception, the company has enjoyed 100 percent annual growth. Per Glenn S. Sandler, CPA, owner and founder, the majority of this growth has been from referrals from satisfied customers. The company also differentiates itself from the local competition by creating patriotic advertising campaigns. Annual campaigns include hundreds of local radio spots, intense social media campaigns and involvement in community events, all supporting the troops. The company’s annual advertising budget exceeds $25,000 per office.
On the Horizon
GI Tax is going national, with plans to start selling franchises in mid-2018. Sandler plans to open approximately 1,000 franchise locations in the United States. This estimate comes from having an average of two locations around the proximity of the 500 military bases currently in the country. The company also expects to have locations near foreign bases in more than 26 countries overseas. The GI Tax franchise model has been to have its offices owned and operated by former members of the military. Sandler’s dream is to have a fraternity of franchise owners, all former military veterans, who work together to help each other be successful. He has a vision of thousands of veterans at the first worldwide GI Tax convention. When visiting one of GI Tax’s two locations, at North Wickham in Melbourne and on U.S. 192 in West Melbourne, you cannot help but feel a sense of American pride. Every location has an American flag hanging out front. The offices have red, white and blue custom-designed furniture, American flags, and American artwork on display. Many pieces are donated by military veteran clients. Every office has framed copies of the U.S Constitution, Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, Gettysburg Address, the Star-Spangled Banner and other historic relics, as well as a custom-designed picture of the Washington Monument draped in the American flag with the Pledge of Allegiance. ◆

You’ve probably noticed, as have we, that there is no shortage of pizza restaurants on the Space Coast. Just on your daily commute you could most likely count several big name chains, a couple of New York style independents and maybe even a Chicago style joint. So in a sea of competition of big budget and regionally focused competitors, what does it take to make a local owner operated pizza place successful for more than 28 years? We sat down with Melbourne Beach native Chris Conneen to find out what makes his creation, Pizza Gallery & Grill successful and what sets it apart from the competition. Pizza Gallery & Grill 2250 Town Center Ave. Viera, FL 32940 Phone: 321-633-0397
wwwpizzagalleryandgrill.com
A
fter a stint with one of those big name brands, with inspiration from his family and faith, Chris decided that he wanted to offer Brevard something that they didn’t know they wanted. Much like a great piece of art is subjective, so is the perfect pizza. Not everyone is satisfied with the minimalism of the standard pepperoni and mushroom; some palates crave a more complex composition. While many of the big brands have caught up with this idea 28 years later, it was Pizza Gallery & Grill that offered Brevard its first taste of gourmet pizza. That first menu served at the 1900 building in downtown Melbourne featured some favorites that are still on the menu today such as the “Botticelli” Hawaiian teriyaki sauce pizza or the “Alvar” Mediterranean with fresh veggies and an olive oil glaze. Not realizing it all those years ago that his idea might grow to encompass “gourmet pizza and so much more” and eventually add “& Grill” to the name. Conneen told us, “We sincerely considered changing our name, but each time it was like we would be squandering the name everyone already knew. So I finally just said, ‘Let’s embrace it, let's tell people we are the best gourmet pizza, and oh yeah, if you want an amazing entrée we've got those, too.’” That decision to embrace what started it all is evident in the latest additions to their innovative pizza menu, named signature artists. Examples are the “Banksy” Spicy Mac & Cheese, with macaroni and cheese as the sauce, topped with crispy bacon, jalapeño peppers and finished with a buttery panko bread crumb topping or the “Renoir” Chicken Bruschetta with an olive oil glaze, grilled chicken, spicy pepper and olive tapenade, all finished with feta, mozzarella and a balsamic reduction. A lot has changed in Brevard since Pizza Gallery first opened their doors in 1989. The competition along with the population has continued to grow, as has Conneen’s desire to offer our community a creative chef driven gourmet pizza.
Why Pizza GALLERY & Grill? Chris Conneen talks about when they added “& Grill” to their name, but we skipped over, why “Gallery?” “I grew up surrounded by art. My mom is a National Watercolor Society artist, and I spent many weekends at sidewalk art shows in Florida and the Southeast. My mom had a great partner in my dad, who owned a gallery and marketed her artwork. He took her from the $50 painting at the sidewalk art show, to the $15,000 commissioned work.” While Conneen’s father initially helped manage the art, in 1999 his impending move to North Carolina and retirement presented a challenge to the gallery aspect of his concept. In an effort to ensure a fresh and rotating selection of art and allow him to focus on growing the restaurant, he approached local artist and designer Jamie Meagher with an offer to act as curator. The addition of Meagher and expansion to a larger space has led to not only an increase in art sales but ever growing pool of artists from not only Brevard but all over central Florida. Having a formal curator helps keeping Pizza Gallery & Grill’s art collection as eclectic and innovative as their gourmet pizza menu. ◆ APR I L 2 018 : 73

ONE
Last Question
For this month’s edition of One Last Question, SpaceCoast LIVING sat down with former cover model contestant Aurelia Rose (December 2011) as she discussed her modeling career and tips and tricks of the trade.
SCL: Tell us how your journey began. Aurelia: I actually began as an actor. I went to school at Savannah College of Art and Design for Media and Performing Arts. As soon as I graduated, I hit the ground running in the performing arts field. SCL: Did someone or something inspire you to start this career path? Aurelia: Riding horses is my passion in life and I always wanted a career in that. That’s funny to think of now because acting and modeling have just as many challenges as a career in the horse industry, but I love what I do, so there are no complaints here. SCL: What was your main focus when first starting out as a model? Aurelia: Getting in front of the camera and learning about myself. Learning what angles work and what facial expressions work. Test shooting as much as I could to build my portfolio and just figuring myself out. SCL: Did any challenges come your way in the beginning? If so, how did you beat them? Aurelia: Just like with acting, you have to get really good at hearing “No.” That’s just part of the industry. Out of 10 castings you may book one… Or you may have a great month and book a ton. SCL: How did this experience with SpaceCoast LIVING Magazine affect your career path? Aurelia: I believe it has opened the door for more local work, which is wonderful because I love our area. As much as I travel for work, I always look forward to coming home to the Space Coast. 96 : spac ec oa st l iv in g
SCL: Where are you at today with your work? Aurelia: I travel around the country now representing Genesis, a new luxury car brand. When I’m home, I’m either riding my horse or working on my latest adventure, Rosa Marina Boutique. I coown the boutique with my business partner, Sheena. SCL: Looking back on all of your experiences so far, what’s the biggest piece of advice you could give aspiring models? Aurelia: A good relationship with your agent is a must. You are working as a team; they don’t make money unless you do. So always having an agent believing in you is key. My advice with anything in life is this: What you’re putting into this world is what you’re going to get out of it. Always be positive, humble and kind and never stop believing in yourself. ◆
