STEVEN HICKS
FROM THE
SENIOR EDITOR, SPACECOAST LIVING STEVE@SCBMARKETING.COM
I was in the clear. Easy Street. A working professional during the week, Jeep trails, campfires and time with great friends on the weekends. $1,600 for off-road tires? No problem. Yes, sir, I was LIVING the high life. Single (mostly) and no kids. I could watch what I wanted on my television, swear at the news, watch R-rated movies during daylight hours, and leave dirty socks anywhere I pleased. If I wanted an ice cream, there was always one in the refrigerator. I could leave the lid up and no one complained. Happy days. Nirvana even. But then I met my wife. She had a 4-year-old son. And, in an instant, two months shy of my 50th birthday, I was a dad. And not just a dad to that 4-year-old, but a dad with plans to adopt another child. How did this happen to me? You love someone and suddenly their plans merge with yours, and may the strongest plan win. That was nine years ago now, and I can say without any hint of reservation (mostly because my wife will be reading this), that these have been the best nine years of my life. It has been tough at times, but we’re parenting through. I have two great sons, ages 14 and 11. We argue over algebra and leaving food in their rooms, stinky gear bags, flushing the toilet, empty boxes in the pantry, and french fries between the seats of my Lexus. But we also argue over who the best Avenger is, why the Steelers are better than the Patriots any day, and if it’s better to drive a slow car fast, or a fast car slow. I have sons, something I thought I’d never experience. But I’ve also evolved from thinking I’d beaten this game of life by not having any children to hold me back, to knowing I’d not be half the man I am without them. To my wife’s consternation, I have an empty beer bottle on my desk at all times. A few years ago, my oldest realized he’d not gotten me a card for Father’s Day. He took a beer from the refrigerator in the garage and wrapped a piece of paper around the label. It read, “To my amazing father: Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, Fathers are amazing. Mine is the best one, too.” Happy Father’s Day from the SCL team.

@ToddThePizzaPlanetTruck
INTRODUCING
THE PIZZA PLANET TRUCK Todd, the Pizza Planet Truck, can be found in nearly every single Disney/Pixar film. In fact, the toy characters used the Pizza Planet Truck as a mode of transportation in each of the three “Toy Story” films, according to Nevin Flinchbaugh, SpaceCoast Business’ lead designer. And now it cruises in Brevard. Built from a 1979 Toyota SR5, Flinchbaugh says that from the beginning, his own Todd, the Pizza Planet Truck was intended to be something that brightens people’s days --“Whether that is just seeing it drive down the road and saying, ‘Did I just see what I think I saw?’ or it is delivering toys or food to those in need,” he explains. “My promise to God was that we would use the truck for good; to deliver food and clothes to the homeless, for random acts of kindness, toy drives, and community events,” Flinchbaugh
continues. That is the purpose of Todd, the Pizza Planet Truck, though he and wife, Tasha, also use it for fun and at car shows occasionally. “The dirt and rust is actually part of the vehicle wrap that was designed in Photoshop,” adds Flinchbaugh. The wrap was printed by PIP Printing in Merritt Island, and Flinchbaugh’s friend, Nicholas Preset was a “huge help” when it came to building the iconic rocket on the roof. “Although none of it could have been done without God’s blessing,” he says. Depending on which of his business cards Flinchbaugh might hand you, you’ll see one of two different quotes inspiring positive change: “Change is nature, the part we can influence. And it all starts when we decide,” from the film “Ratatouille,” or “The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing,” spoken by Walt Disney. SCB Marketing is putting the finishing touches on a toy drive which will center around the truck. Watch our Facebook pages as well as Todd, the Pizza Planet Truck’s Facebook page for more details and opportunities to participate. 3 june 2 017 : 13

WHAT IF Your
WealthConfidence has less to do with the amount of money you have and more to do with your mindset?
There are eight different mindsets that contribute to an improved
WealthConfidence.
B
eing open-minded to choices and decisions will help you avoid having contempt before investigation and missing out on something that could be really great. But in this day and age of instant information, you can find yourself surrounded with too many choices. It can be overwhelming to see so many options and may cause undue stress and even depression. You may feel you have to limit what you will even consider in order to keep your sanity.
What is your
WealthConfidence?
To improve your WealthConfidence, you must be able to put your choices and decisions into the context of your individual situation, goals and aspirations. Answers to the following questions can help: What do you have now? What will you need to create the financial life you dream of? What actions can you take right now to move toward that future? Your answers will help you look at your various choices in light of their individual and collective contribution to your financial future. Determining if a decision or choice will contribute to or detract from your financial future will take some time and effort as you monitor your progress along your WealthPlan. Comparing how the growth of your financial resources is moving toward what you will need helps you determine what to do next. Once you know this, it should be much easier to make solid decisions and improve your WealthConfidence. Are you struggling with the complexities that wealth can bring? Answer the following questions: »» What is your current financial condition? Benchmark yourself »» Are you ahead of or behind where you should be by now? Gap determination »» Will what you are doing now get you where you want to go? Decisions assessment Complimentary resources that can help you answer these questions and more are available to you. Let us know if you would like to take advantage of them. Improved WealthConfidence can be yours today! 3

The Allure Golf Cart of the
By Steven Hicks
H
aving lived in Viera for a number of years, this author has become a little numb to the pervasiveness of the golf cart. But as I meet more newcomers, one of the first topics of conversation, after the weather, is “what is it with all the golf carts?” I consider myself neither here long enough to be considered a local, nor short enough to be called a newcomer. In other words, I’m not either. The perfect stance from which to write this little primer. I’m going to use my community as an example, because obviously I know it best. Viera is also likely Brevard’s most heavily trafficked area in golf carts. There are certainly other golf-cart communities, and you’ll see the carts everywhere, but Viera does seem to be ground zero for the explosion of little battery-powered carts. EVERY POSSIBLE USE My wife has taken the golf cart to Publix. We have driven it to Long Doggers. We take our boys to school on it when they can’t ride their bicycles. We’ll send our sons to Dunkin’ Donuts to bring back coffee and donuts on Sunday morning. They love that as much as we do.
16 :
spac ec oa st l iv in g
Here’s a local’s tip: the car line at any given elementary school or middle school is a nightmare in time management (but, more importantly, it keeps kids safe). Golf carts can wait quietly, lurking on the grass nearby. This alone can save you hours each week and a great deal of frustration. Have a look around 2:45 p.m. at Manatee Elementary or the Viera Charter School -- it is a sight to behold.
Some evenings, my wife and I just drive around neighborhoods to look at lighting, landscaping, and ideas for our pool. It is quite the pleasant experience to cart around at dusk. Our oldest son drives the cart to nearby friends’ homes as well. There are specific rules about a driver’s age and golf cart equipment for driving on streets versus sidewalks. I’ll let your dealer explain those to you. THE SCHLEPPING Here is where the golf cart rules the day. You take your children to Viera Regional Park for football, baseball, soccer or lacrosse. It is game day so you need gear bags, chairs, possibly a tent, a cooler, camera bag, snacks, and yes, the little athletes. Pack
all of that into your SUV… no problem. Drive to VRP and, unless yours is the early game, you’re parking quite a few hundred yards from your game field of choice and schlepping all of that to the sidelines. Oh, you can buy one of those cute beach wagons to pull, but really, a golf cart is the way to go. I realize it is a much bigger expense, but as one who bit the bullet way back, it has proven to be worth every penny. You’ll now load up the golf cart in your driveway and drive to the end of the field.
The Power Behind High-Level Financial Guidance.
GO BIG OR JUST GO There seems to be at least two schools of thought here. You’ll see a six-seater, lifted with off-road tires, light bars, a killer sound system and wrapped in professional graphics. That cart can approach $20,000 and easily take up one car’s spot in your garage. Or you can buy the typical refurb from a golf course for around $4,000. Of course, you can also find decent used cart deals for under that, but not by much, and have a dealer check it out before you buy. This is the allure of the golf cart. Personalize it with your school colors, make it an extension of your personality and arrive in style, or go utilitarian and keep it real on the cheap. Either way, you’ll quickly learn why you see so many of them. They just fit our lifestyle here in Brevard. Oh, and did I mention they are awesome if you golf? GAS OR ELECTRIC? You will see both, and you’ll know instantly which is which by the noise. The gas golf carts are louder and emit exhaust. But, you can go farther with a little planning for fuel stops. Battery powered carts are what most people are thinking of when you say “golf cart,” but gas is a viable option. Most battery-powered carts have four batteries under the seat. You plug it in at night and get a varying distance depending on load and the condition and charge of the batteries. A quick online search says that an electric golf cart has a range of 35-50 miles. I’ve never gone that far, but remember, and this is critical, that would be 17-25 miles out…and back. 3

I’m a dad. I know this to be true; most dads would NOT turn down a new Rolex for Father’s Day. SpaceCoast LIVING took a trip down to Kempf ’s Jewelers in Indialantic to see just how easy it is to make this dream come true for the dad in your life.
Day-Date 40 in 18kt yellow gold | 18kt yellow gold and stainless Rolex Submariner | Rolex Sky-Dweller in 18kt yellow gold on a strap.

ROLEX Hint Hint * By Steven Hicks
T
he first thing you’ll notice is that Kempf ’s only sells one brand of watch. That is not an accident. The Kempf family has a long history of quality, service and style. When only the best will do, locals know where to go. If you’re going to buy that special watch for dad, you need to know you can trust the seller. Check. With a timepiece like Rolex, you need to know you’re talking to one of only about 450 authorized sellers nationwide. Check. Next, you need a Rolex dealer who knows and appreciates the Rolexes they offer and can guide you through the process. Check. We spoke with owner Jason Kempf, the head of their Rolex program, and Rhett Boyd who loves these watches and their history.
Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT Master II 18 :
spac ec oa st l iv in g
There are a couple of qualifying questions to get you started. Is Dad an active guy? Will this new watch see a lot of time in or near the water? How about underwater? Start with the Rolex Submariner. Probably the most iconic and regularly seen Rolex, the Submariner will take anything you can dish out with style and panache. Boyd says, “To most people, if you say, ‘close your eyes and imagine a wristwatch,’ that's the watch that comes to mind.” Add a
color bezel, maybe a gold/stainless bracelet, or stick to the more traditional all-stainless design. Boyd adds, “The Rolex Datejust is also equally iconic, with the classic Jubilee bracelet. It's the perfect mix of sporty but elegant all at the same time. It was also the first wristwatch to have the date aperture, so there's a lot of real cool history behind it. Stainless steel is always a good starting point, but if a person loves gold, we can help them move in that direction too, or platinum.” Kempf ’s offers a variety of payment options as well as an annual trade-in event. Is Dad more at home in a suit and Italian loafers? Look at the Rolex Cellini collection which “combines classicism with the eternal elegance of traditional timepieces,” according to Rolex. “The Cellini is the classic dress line and in the last two years, Rolex has reinvigorated it,” says Kempf. “They are completely automatic watches made in precious metals only. They come on elegant alligator watch bracelets. They're beautiful. Just stunning. Some are equipped with day/night indicators, some withs dual time zones. They are truly a gentleman's dress watch.”
WHERE TITANS
RISE
Kempf's offers a wide selection of Rolex watches
The point is Rolex runs the gamut from simple stainless steel classic designs like the new 40mm Air King to a solid gold or platinum Daytona Chronometer or President Day/Date, to an elegant Cellini dress watch. You are only limited by your imagination and budget. Kempf says, tt“That's the beauty of a Rolex: you know they look great in board shorts or in the board room.” Lastly, we Dads really just appreciate the thought. Kempf says, “Anything that is picked out as a gift, as long as it's not worn, can be exchanged. The gentleman can come in after the surprise and try on different Rolexes.” Sounds like a plan.3

What Makes a Great
Burger?
Burgers–one of America's greatest comfort foods. Burgers are as diverse as the country of people who love them. Every year, publication after publication comes up with their “Best of...” or “Top 10...” list of burgers. The lists are really just their skewed opinions of “who's who,” “who's best.” It's all subjective really, right?! By definition, a hamburger is “a round patty of ground beef, fried or grilled and typically served on a bun or roll and garnished with various condiments,” but in practice it's these three things plus a matter of taste and preference of the types of additional items, not so much a matter of who has made the “best” one. So we set out on a quest to find some of the best burgers that Brevard County has to offer. This list is not meant to be complete or the be-all and end-all of “best burgers in Brevard,” but more a way of opening up the discussion to find out what you, the readers, rate as your favorites, and to showcase some really great burgers on the Space Coast.

e reached out to friends and foodies alike to find out some of their favorite burger joints and kept hearing the same places over and over again. They are all great in their own right and for their own reasons; some have a great diversity of toppings, others place their greatness in the buns, some say it is the meat or the “not meat” when it comes to veggie burgers, others say it's the 'love' they put into the process, and more.. ►►

e thought the logical local chef to start with would be chef Toni Elkhouri from Cedar's Cafe. After all, she is the only chef in Brevard that holds a James Beard award, more specifically a James Beard blended mushroom burger award. She gave us a breakdown of what goes into creating the perfect burger.
W
“There are a million and one 'good' to 'ok' burgers,” Elkhouri explains, “but in order to create a one in a million, fantastic burger, you need to break it down into a theme you are trying to execute and then these three categories: bun, patty and condiments. Be it basic or complex, if all three parts are not favored and able to stand out on their own, you will get an average result.” Three basic elements, that's it! Elkhouri continues: “The bun should be stable enough to hold everything together but still complement the rest. I favor doing a glaze on it in order to tie in all the flavors. Get creative -- waffles, arepas, pita or even lettuce can be used.” Next up, the meat of the burger, figuratively speaking, the patty, Elkhouri says, “For the patty, flavor is key, and don't forget to salt it! I love using onion and mushrooms in the patty. A patty doesn't have to have meat; some of the best ones can be made with beets, beans and vegetables. The key with a vegan or vegetarian burger is to bind the mix with flour, bread or rice. Doing an Italian burger? Why not add basil, Italian herbs and garlic to your patty? If Greek is more your style, try adding lemon, mint and oregano,” Elkhouri adds. Condiments are our favorite part of making a burger our own, and Elkhouri’s, too. “Now for the real fun, the condiments,” she says. “This is when your personality and style come through. You can take the basics and make them your own. Garlic mustard, pomegranate ketchup and why not a curry mayo? If sauces aren't your thing, make a relish or grill something. Try a Hawaiian burger with a macadamia and pineapple relish with grilled coconut.” The combinations are endless. To sum it all up in one delicious bite, Elkhouri says, “A good burger is a thing of beauty and can be appreciated on any occasion. All that anyone needs to achieve a fantastic burger is imagination. Have fun with it!” Want to try a burger at Cedar's? You better hurry. “We will have this year’s entry (hopefully getting everyone to vote) available starting May 29 through July 31, as well as our annual burger bash the last full week of June.” Outside of these dates, Cedar's Cafe only has burgers available on their menu at certain times of the year. Please check their Facebook page for more information. To wrap up our burger bonanza, here it is, our list of some of the great burgers in Brevard. Who makes your favorites list? Discovering the HERO hiding
under 350 lbs
By Fidelity Bank of Florida’s Dominick Frank Damico III

I LOST OVER 125 POUNDS WITHOUT COUNTING CALORIES, WITHOUT REGULAR EXERCISE AND WITHOUT EXPENSIVE DIET PLANS.
This is my story of why I started gaining weight, when it brought me close to death and how I battled my way back to the living by finding the hero hiding under 350 pounds. FINDING COMFORT IN FOOD The first hero most boys have is their dad. However, when their hero dies and a 3-year-old boy asks, “When is daddy coming home?” what do you say? When he gets confused hearing his mom on the phone with the hospital and declares, “Just write God a check so daddy can come back,” what do you do? My Italian/Irish family did everything possible to comfort and protect me. What they would say is “mangia” and what we would do is “eat.” That is how it all began; my journey finding comfort in food. Feeding my feelings was a quick fix, but ultimately resulted in a lifelong struggle with weight. This is my story about the battle I recently won and the war I continue to fight.
only added fuel to my competitive fire inside, cementing my drive to both improve my health and impress my new employer.
VICTIM vs HERO
Before
After
GROUNDED: NOT FIT TO FLY Fast forward to December 2015 and I was not in a good place. I was working in a stressful job, exceeding company goals, but was still going nowhere. I felt trapped and unworthy of a better position. By now, I had gained so much weight stuffing my emotions that consequently I became too large to fit in airplane seats, which only further restricted my contact from family and friends. Frustrated by these added limitations I had placed on myself, I even pulled away from God, who I believed had abandoned me, like my Dad did when he died and left me at three years old. Yes, my thoughts were irrational, but I was sick spiritually, emotionally and now physically. The abuse I put my body through had finally caught up with me, and besides the high blood pressure and borderline diabetes, I ended up being hospitalized with pneumonia; my body had gone septic and was close to shutting down. It was during my hospital stay where my fight-or-flight response kicked in. I forced myself to take inventory of my life and the choices I had made that placed me in that cage without walls. It was time to break free.
MAKING MY ESCAPE After recovering from my serious health scare, I took the first step towards taking care of myself and in March 2016 seized an opportunity to leave the unfulfivvlling job for a career. I knew I deserved a better work environment and Fidelity Bank of Florida was the door God opened for me to run through. Then, after I had only been at the bank a few weeks, I received the email from human resources (HR) about a Wellness Program Challenge, and I recognized it was another chance to continue the healing process. The fact that it was a weight loss contest
On April 11, 2016, just shy of a month from starting at Fidelity Bank of Florida, the Wellness Program Challenge began. It was designed to be a team event (must be paired with a coworker). Weigh-ins would be tracked weekly by HR and at the end of three months, the team that had lost the greatest overall percentage of weight would win over $300. I had fixed my job and now it was time to fix my health. As part of a two-person team, I started the challenge. HR would send regular emails on healthy living, ideas to combat stress and weekly updates with the team weight loss percentage totals and rankings to encourage us. Having this regular accountability and daily support from my co-workers and employer was another crucial aspect of my success. Only one month into the challenge, my teammate left the company. Most people would have used that as an excuse to play the victim and quit. I understood that now I would need to continue as if I was still a team of two. I chose to change my perspective, hero up, and run my own race. I won the first challenge by losing over 16 percent of my body weight versus the second-place team combined total of 9.8 percent! Once I tasted success, I decided to remain focused on improving my health with high protein, low carb, smart food choices like: grilled chicken vs. fried, mashed cauliflower vs. potatoes, grilled vegetables vs. rice, salad with lemon, oil and vinegar vs. dressing, and sugar free Jell-O vs. ice cream. Eating lean proteins, fresh veggies and drinking 64-124 ounces of water daily was the basis of my diet – no sugar, bread or pasta.
ABOVE AND BEYOND In total, I’ve lost over 125 pounds, over 36 percent of my total weight, been taken off all blood pressure medication, received excellent blood work results and even won over $300 in prize money since April of last year. Admittedly, the cash and recognition was great, but it was never about those things -- I had bigger motivations. During this journey, I drew on strength from above. I reconnected with God and began talking with Him regularly. I realized how easily I could gain the weight back and how life is riddled with stumbling blocks, so it was critical to for me to reestablish the solid foundation of faith I was raised with. Another motivation was my young nieces and nephews. I enjoyed spending quality time with them, but as they became older and more active, I found myself losing energy and unable to keep up. I didn’t want to continue missing out on valuable moments and activities with them. Now, when I see them, we can play outside, go to the beach and fly kites. I'm able to engage a lot more. That’s priceless to me. Last October, I could fly on a plane, which enabled me to start rebuilding relationships with family and friends I had been hiding from in the past. Today I’m working on living my life with gratitude. I changed my eating habits, but now I need God’s help to change the mental junk food I’ve been feeding myself for years. I’m still learning to take care of myself and how to trust the resilient hero that’s been inside of me this entire time. 3 june 2 017 : 27
GET YOUR SKINNY ON Strawberry Laser Lipo of Brevard
J
ulie LaLonde was the first authorized dealer of the Strawberry Laser in the U.S. Strawberry Laser Liposuction is a low-level laser technology created in England and introduced in Europe and the Middle East in 2007. The FDA cleared it in 2013 and it is now offered locally by Strawberry Laser Lipo of Brevard. In 2011, LaLonde flew to the U.K. where she trained directly under the manufacturer and earned the very first master trainer designation. Upon her arrival back in the U.S., LaLonde helped facilitate FDA approval. Her passion for the Strawberry Laser captivated Hollywood, and she was instrumental in the laser being showcased on many national television shows. Brenda Sanchez graduated from the University of Central Florida on a full golf scholarship. Throughout her life, fitness and nutrition have been the backbone of her success and happiness. In her twenties, she competed on several golf mini-tours, including the prestigious Futures Tour. While playing professional golf, she was scouted by Golf Digest Japan and signed a contract to work as a fitness and bikini model. Unfortunately, at the age of 40, Sanchez suffered a traumatic shoulder injury which required surgery. During her recovery, most of which was sedentary, she gained weight. This was devastating to her. Due to constant pain, she was unable to box, run, spin and lift weights as part of her normal training regimen. The more weight she gained, the more hopeless she felt. LaLonde introduced her to the Strawberry Laser Lipo and the whole body vibration plate. She researched it and after she saw it demonstrated on the Rachael Ray Show, she gave it a try. Her first month, she dropped two sizes and almost 20 lbs. Thrilled with the results and fascinated by the science supporting it, she partnered with LaLonde to open 321FatLoss in Brevard. It is her goal to promote healthy, realistic lifestyle changes that can triple your results as opposed to working out and dieting alone. When the two partnered to open their first Strawberry Laser Lipo treatment location, they knew they were onto something bigger than just their own successful location. Being recognized as experts in the laser field, many people approached them about partnerships. They witnessed all the misinformation and failing laser businesses nationwide and wanted to do something positive to highlight the Strawberry Laser Lipo - Images show results after 8 treatments true nature of this amazing product. Realizing that they could help people gain financial independence while helping clients with their inch loss journey, they began to sell their business model instead of just selling the laser on its own. In just six short months, they went from one location to a total of three, with many more expected in the future. Current Strawberry Laser owners -- doctors, medispa owners, weight loss clinics, etc. -- call LaLonde and Sanchez asking them for guidance and advice.•
Strawberry Laser Lipo has three locations -- Melbourne, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale and is about to add two more in the next few months. Working to Complete the
on Autism Care By Shawna S. Kelsch
T
he numbers are growing: official estimates from the Centers for Disease Control stipulate that 1 in 68 children (ages 3 to 17) in America has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), according to the most recent data available in 2014.
That number is likely higher, however, due to the limitations of data collection. In 2015, a government survey pegged the number at 1 in 45, or about two percent of all children in America.
“The 1 in 45 estimate is not surprising and is likely a more accurate representation of autism prevalence…” according to a response about the study on the Autism Speaks website, www.autismspeaks.org. (Austism Speaks is the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization.) If that number is realistic, then in Brevard almost 2,400 children could be affected, with limited resources to help families, caregivers and parents address the many facets of ASD. Enter James Holz, Esquire, a former Wall Street trader who left the industry after 9/11 to pursue a legal career in Florida. For the past five years, Holz and his wife, Pam, have been putting the puzzle of ASD education, resources and financial support together one piece at a time.
june 2 017 : 31
Starting Anew In 2012, Holz and his family needed help for their son, Loki Xavier, who was six years old at the time. Diagnosed with ASD, the couple found it difficult to source community, education and programmatic resources for Loki without making it a full time job. This experience led to the couple’s first priority: to ensure that children with ASD have access to early interventional therapy, which is key to the long-term management of the condition. In 2014, the Holzes opened Kaleidoscope Interventions in central Melbourne. “The purpose for opening the Kaleidoscope Interventions (KI) clinic was to provide families with access to quality therapy,” Holz said. “Therapy can be performed in the child’s home or onsite at our facility on Hibiscus Boulevard,” he said. (Another clinic is planned to open on Nasa Blvd. this May). The facility offers one-on-one therapy with a registered behavior technician with hands-on therapy and individualized programs as determined by a board certified behavioral analyst. All staff is trained to treat families with empathy and respect. Along the way, the couple also recognized that the public schools in Brevard were not equipped to handle the specific and tailored needs of children with ASD. So, they created an environment where Loki and his peers would thrive and learn – at their level.
“The purpose for opening the Kaleidoscope Interventions clinic was to provide families with access to quality therapy.” James Holz

Plans for Expansion West to Kissimmee/Orlando Holz also talks about spreading their circle of support west to the Kissimmee/Orlando area. “The foundation just acquired the Willow School of Maitland, which is for developmentally delayed children as well. That's one of our expansions. The other news is that we're building a facility in the Interstate 4/U.S. Highway 192 corridor. Our goal is to build a 20,000-25,000-square-foot facility which will be our second Puzzle Box Academy. The goal is to assist 180 kids, with a staff of about 105.” Holz is in the planning stages now, and there is a lot of permitting, construction and prep work to get that location ready. Holz adds, “Construction itself is roughly ten months, so it's really about 13 to 16 months from identification of the land to having the school completely built.” The goal is to buy the land within the next three to six months, and then open the school within two years. The new facility will take on many of the aspects of multiple facilities in Melbourne, all under one roof. Holz says, “Puzzle Box would be for students as it is now, but they would also be receiving various services through Kaleidoscope Interventions. So from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. is pure education; it meets all the requirements as a year round school open for 46 weeks. And then from roughly 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. is 100 percent therapy.” This new facility will also house a Holz Center to provide additional services to the community. “I think a Holz Center is going to be incorporated in every expansion,” Holz notes. The Holz Center would help those families not attending the school to coordinate services -- a vital aspect of what the foundation stands for. Holz added, “Awareness without helping [to] educate is pointless, and it is cruel to not help a family when there is a means to do so.”3

elative newcomers to the Space Coast, James Holz and family have spent their first five years here blazing trails and clearing paths for special needs education and interventions. They are helping to further raise community awareness about autism spectrum disorder and developmental delays.
In 2014, Pamela and James Holz founded Puzzle Box Academy to provide individualized, science-based education to children with autism and other developmental delays. Additionally, the two opened Kaleidoscope Interventions Children’s Therapy Center in 2014 to treat and assist children with developmental delays using applied behavior analysis, the preferred therapy among health care professionals. Holz, a successful businessman, left the financial industry after 9/11 to pursue a legal career in Florida, where he attended and graduated law school at Florida A&M University. He has since shifted his career focus to the Holz Foundation, a religious-based non-profit foundation that was established in 2015 and is self-funded. Although quite modest about his accomplishments, Holz is laying a strong foundation of philanthropy, outreach, community service and faith. “The center was created to help other families with specially-abled children, the school to help the children receive the education they deserve, and the clinic so they receive the best therapy possible,” he said. The Holz Center will open in May at 125 E. Nasa Blvd. as a resource to help families identify and access the programs in Brevard that align with their special needs and circumstances.

When Holz and his family spend time together, they alternate from quiet nights of playing family games to jam-packed days attending theme parks at Disney and Universal Studios. Holz has a lot on his plate, but he is juggling it all with resolve. He is motivated to leave the world a better place, and tackles the obstacles as they appear with a balance of shrewd business acumen, legal expertise and heartfelt dedication. “I just want to see the world become a better place for future generations,” he said. 3

Henderson recently completed his 12th season as head coach of boys varsity basketball at Holy Trinity, where he also serves as dean of students. In 2016, he took this team to the Class 4A state championship, but it’s not the victories he holds most dear; it’s the players. Each boy he’s ever coached receives a text from him on their birthday each year. “It’s like having a second family,” he explained. “Even though I’m just coaching basketball, I try to play a role in their lives as well.” He and his high school sweetheart, Melissa, have been married for nearly 14 years and have two children, Isabella and Damien. As Melissa works nights as a nurse, the kids are often at the gym with dad and the team. “Ever since they were in diapers, my kids have been coming to practice with me. They love it. They really enjoy being around the boys. They’ve been a big part of my coaching,” Henderson said. Henderson also considers himself blessed to have an “outstanding” stepfather in Gary Baxter, who comes to each of his games and keeps the scorebook.

Whether parenting or coaching, Henderson takes a play from his late father’s playbook. “My dad was a very big, strong man but always gave (my siblings and me) hugs, even into our 30s, and was always very affectionate, making sure his kids knew he loved them.” Henderson strives to do the same. “On a daily basis I tell my kids and my players how much I love them and care for them. I think it’s important that they know we’re here to support them.” That can sometimes be challenging when the “children” are 6'5", but in Henderson’s eyes, “Even though they’re big, they’re still kids.”3

e started young, enlisting in the Navy when he was just 17. And after serving as a medical corpsman, David Ross knew he wanted to pursue a career as a physician. “I am [the] first Ross to go to college. My father is a retired Air Force communications tech and my mom worked in a deli,” he said.

After completing studies in biology from Florida State and graduating from the American University of the Caribbean Medical School, Ross concluded his residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in medical oncology at the University of Florida. He has known his wife of 15 years, Millie, since he was 9 years old. The two grew up in the same neighborhood in Orlando. They now share their lives (and love) with 11-yearold twins Annabel and Adam. The family spends as much time as they can enjoying the waterways here, said Ross. “Our greatest passion is offshore fishing. We also enjoy traveling, scuba diving, snorkeling and cooking seafood.” When he’s not on the water with his family, Ross specializes in hematology/oncology for what most of us know as Cancer Care Centers of Brevard (the business recently partnered with U.S. Oncology/McKesson Network, which consists of more than 1,400 affiliated physicians in 400 locations across the U.S. delivering care and treatment at the local level). “I joined the CCCB family three years ago. We provide care for all types of cancer, whether it is radiation or systemic treatment (including targeted immunotherapy).” Ross credits his family and Catholic faith as his main sources of strength. From his children, he has learned to loosen up a bit: “They …see life through simpler terms. They teach me to keep it simple, to play more, laugh at myself and even be silly sometimes.” From his father, a woodworker, Ross says he learned the value of keeping a sense of humor, measure twice/cut once, and the world is what you make of it. 3

orn in Key West, Jack Jeffcoat is a seasoned real estate agent (for both buyers and sellers) with deeply planted roots in Brevard. But this family that plays together spends most weekends on the road, crisscrossing the state and the U.S. for lacrosse, rugby, football and dance competitions. “We could be in Las Vegas with Dance Mania or in Maryland with the Palm Beach Revolution on any given weekend,” he said of his children’s activities. Jeffcoat and his wife, Stacy, both enthusiastic fans, are happy to oblige the sometimes-hectic schedules: “Emily dances for a competitive team called Dance Mania All-Stars and has been on as many as five competitive teams over the past eight years. She also plays lacrosse for two elite travel teams. “Jack plays lacrosse locally for Team 321 The Renegades (his coach is a former major league lacrosse coach), as well as for two elite travel teams: Palm Beach Revolution and one out of upstate New York called Sweet Lax. He also plays flag football for the Melbourne Ducks (Ascension Catholic School) and rugby for the Cape Coast Pirates,” Jeffcoat said. The youngest, Landon, is following closely in his siblings’ footsteps. “He loves going to HIT Sports (High Intensity Training Sport) and playing lacrosse, soccer and T-ball. He recently started practicing on an indo board for balance,” he said.

Jeffcoat said he and a group of partners developed High Intensity Sports, the only indoor sports facility in Brevard, as a place for kids to practice and play when the weather is not amenable to outdoor play. The facility features hybrid box lacrosse, indoor soccer, speed, agility and strength training, and four 1,000-squarefoot hitting cages for baseball. 3

n 2016, Jeremy Bradford and his family returned to Titusville after a work assignment in his home state of Kentucky to take on the responsibilities of vice president of operations, outpatient services and business development for Parrish Medical Center.” He had previously served as vice president of Ambulatory Services for Parrish Medical Center from 2013 to 2015. When not handling the day to day responsibilities of his new role at PMC, Bradford and his wife, Ginny, share the responsibilities of raising two young children, daughter Maggie Beth and son Turner, both students at Park Avenue Christian Academy. Bradford credits his father, Bob Bradford, with life lessons that reinforced the faith he and his family hold so dear. “Some of the most important lessons my father taught me were giving back to the community in which I live, and making a positive impact on whatever I do.” With their two small children, Bradford and his wife reinforce that they can do anything and be anything they put their minds to. “I often have conversations with my daughter and explain to her that life is about learning, determination and treating others with respect. Turner is still [so] young and full of energy!” An active family unit, the Bradfords are enthusiastic fans of community sports. “Maggie Beth currently plays tennis at La Cita Country Club, and Turner is playing T-ball for Indian River City Little League. Both children also swim for the Titusville High School youth swim team.”

Children: Turner (4); Maggie Beth (8) Wife: Ginny
As a young boy, Bradford remembers watching his father dedicate two decades of time as a volunteer Little League coach, learning firsthand “the importance of investing in others, hard work, confidence, determination and integrity,” he said. It’s a lesson he strives to pay forward every day: “I try hard to be a good example to our children through my daily actions as a parent, father and friend.” 3

Life Preservers Our Hospital Safety Score proves our dedication to saving lives. ®
The LeapFrog Group’s Hospital Safety Score is the gold standard measure of patient safety, as cited in MSNBC, The New York Times and AARP The Magazine. Parrish has earned an ‘A’ every scoring period since 2012 — no other hospital in Brevard can say the same. You can hold on to our promise to preserve more lives through safe practices.
According to The LeapFrog Group, hospital safety breakdowns account for more than 200,000 deaths each year in the U.S. Only 63 hospitals nationwide—including PMC—can claim straight ‘As’ in hospital safety scores since 2012. Source: hospitalsafetygrade.org/about-us/newsroom/display/527797

Cabinet Design Trends With Scott Riley of Cabinet Designs of Central Florida
I
f you’ve built or remodeled a home recently you know how much can be done in the kitchen. If your contractor identified a budget for appliances, counter tops and cabinets, you realize how easily you can spend that budget, and how quickly. Contractors will often offer different packages of cabinets, but to explore all your options, make a call to Scott and Leslie Riley at Cabinet Designs of Central Florida. Their Brevard showroom is in Rockledge, off Murrell Road, and they recently opened a new Windermere showroom on Main Street. Plan on spending some time there -you’ll be amazed. During a recent visit, Riley was quick to offer design advice, and there was one specific trend he was excited about: inset cabinetry. “We're seeing a resurgence of this cabinet style. Many of our clients are seeing the nicest kitchens on Houzz and Pinterest, and then realizing that the clean, transitional look they like is actually an inset cabinet,” Riley said.
To those unfamiliar with the different cabinet “Inset cabinets are very popular in the Northeast, and they have just recently styles, overlay or framed cabinets are what most started to come into Florida. We’ve rarely seen requests for inset, but the style people have. Those styles consist of a hardwood just really hadn't made its way to us.” But now homeowners are seeing some frame that is mounted to the face of a cabinet nice kitchens online and on social media, and are asking Riley for that style. box and then the doors overlay the frame. Then there is the European style, often referred to as Inset cabinetry lends itself to custom design-and-build cabinet shops like frameless. The face of the cabinet is finished with Cabinet Designs. Riley says, “There are different, tighter tolerances involved a wood veneer, so there is no center rail when here. Inset cabinetry requires a much higher level of craftsmanship in the you open the doors. You get 10-15 percent more manufacturing process. Because of this, inset has always carried high-dollar connotations. Inset cabinetry is much more technical with little room storage versus a framed cabinet. for error.” “That’s what we typically build,” Riley said. “Framed cabinetry is kind of old school and For someone coming to Cabinet Designs for custom cabinetry, inset cabinets traditional. Frameless is a little more sleek, a are just another option in Riley’s offerings. “I love inset personally. It's gorgeous. When you see a well done inset, it's super nice,” he adds. little more modern.” The trend Riley is most excited about is a third cabinet construction type. “On an ‘inset cabinet,’ the door and the drawer fronts sit inside the cabinet frame. Everything is flush to the surface of the frame. Typically, you see this style in the high-end, showpiece kitchens,” Riley adds. 42 : spac ec oa st l iv ing
COLOR TRENDS AND MORE… “The hottest color is -- and this is interesting to me -- green,” Riley says. “The trend has changed. It's been gray for three to five years, but this year the color has turned the corner and it is most certainly green.” Although Riley says he gets requests for blue as well, the pro-tip is to combine the two to get a grayish green or a grayish blue.
High gloss acrylics and laminates are also increasingly popular, according to Riley. They are not in demand yet here in Brevard, but in Orlando they are in high demand. “There are many new and interesting laminates to choose from. There are more unique patterns, textures and bold colors to choose from. We do modern well. What makes us unique is our ability to source material that nobody else has.”
Technology is making its way into kitchen cabinetry. Beyond popular self-closing drawers and doors, touch sensitive versions are now available. “This is the newest way to access your cabinet interiors. Virtually hands free. No knobs or handles needed. These automated doors and drawers are mostly seen in modern kitchens like the houses we are doing at the Lake Nona Country Club near Orlando.”
HARDWARE AND ELECTRONICS
If you take one thing away from reading this, realize that there are many more options and choices at Cabinet Designs than a contractor typically offers. If you’re building your dream home or creating the perfect kitchen in a remodel, you owe yourself a trip to Cabinet Designs to explore all the possibilities. 3
Riley says, “Hardware trends are in polished nickel, antiqued bronze and rose bronze. Gold has made a comeback of sorts, though stainless and oil rubbed bronze are still quite popular.” Cabinet Designs offers a broad range of hardware options to complement the wood and finish you choose for your cabinets. “We’ll also work with a sample of your countertop of choice to get the overall feel that you’re after.” Riley says he’s seeing more and more quartz counters, along with granite and the occasional concrete top.

After The Storm Replace Damaged Floors Correctly CUSTOM WOOD FLOORING
B
eing a homeowner in Florida, you learn to prepare for the occasional hurricane scare. The typical checklist includes hurricane shutters, flood and storm insurance, backup generators and trustworthy contractors to repair storm damage. The silver lining to a home damaged by a hurricane is the opportunity to upgrade roofs, rooms, windows and floors. Dr. Andrea Deratany Blasy’s beachside home felt the wrath of Hurricane Matthew. The parquet wood floors in her large family room had finally met their match with water damage and needed to be replaced. “This house was built in the sixties by quality craftsmen,” Blasy said. “It has withstood many hurricanes. Fortunately, I knew the modern day craftsman that would make the floors in my home even better than before…Don Herndon with Classic Wood Flooring.” Classic Wood Flooring Carpet and Tile Design Center has installed quality floors in homes across Brevard since 1971. Their showroom on U.S. Highway 1 showcases flooring options that are engineered to last in Florida’s challenging climate. 46 : spac ec oa st l iv ing
“It is very difficult to find that level of professionalism and commitment these days. They are true gentlemen of the trade.”
When Blasy visited the showroom to replace her beloved parquet floor, Herndon knew it had to be something special. “Years ago we’d installed travertine tile in Andrea’s home,” he said. “So we’d been in the house and I could already visualize the space and what wood flooring options would look great.” The floor Blasy eventually chose was a premium 5-inch Brazilian cherry floor – a stunning wood with inviting warmth and upscale character. The team at Classic Wood Flooring had to remove existing wood flooring that was damaged from the hurricane. Upon removing the wood flooring, they found the plywood subfloor was also damaged. They leveled and replaced the subfloor prior to gluing down the new, prefinished Brazilian cherry flooring. “In spite of the additional damage discovered, Don and his crew put in the extra work to make sure the floors were perfect,” said Blasy. “It is very difficult to find that level of professionalism and commitment these days. They are true gentlemen of the trade.” Over the many years serving the area, Classic Wood Flooring Carpet and Tile Design Center has built its reputation on customer satisfaction and superior design. Owned and operated by Don and Julie Herndon, Classic Wood Flooring Carpet and Tile Design Center is licensed, insured and a member of the Brevard Home Builders Association and the National Wood Flooring Association, the Melbourne Regional Chamber of Commerce, and the Better Business Bureau. Located on U.S. Highway 1, one block south of Suntree Boulevard, Classic Wood Flooring sells and installs carpet, tile, wood, luxury resilient vinyl, natural stone, porcelain and ceramic tile flooring. With more than 80 employees including 60 professional installers, the showroom is the largest single-store dealer in Florida for J.J. Haines and Company, Inc., the largest flooring distributor in the country. Visit the showroom at Classic Wood Flooring Carpet and Tile Design Center to experience friendly and knowledgeable professionals and quality flooring for home and business. 3

Without a Heart, it’s just a machine. So in 1971, a little Heart built a different kind of airline—one that made sure everyone could fly. Everyone has important places to go. So we invented low-fares to help them get there. To us, you’re not 1A or 17B. You’re a person with a name, like Steve. Here, we think everyone deserves to feel special, no matter where you sit or how much you fly. And with all the places we’re going next, we’ll always put you first, because our love of People is still our most powerful fuel. Some say we do things differently. We say, why would we do things any other way? Without a Heart, it’s just a machine.

Myers T Lawns
im Myers and wife, Danielle, decided to take a leap of faith in 2009 when they launched Myers Lawns from their Palm Bay home.
Beauty Outside and In By Shawna S. Kelsch

“I had been working as a land surveyor and was part of a big team. I started the lawn business on the side to make extra income,” Myers said. A layoff from the survey job, a few odd jobs and the arrival of their third child later, “I decided to take my future into my own hands and control it. I didn’t want someone else – with the ability to fire me or cut my hours – to have that power,” he explained. Eight years later, the business has expanded to seven trucks on the road, a growing and reputable tree-trimming business and 13 employees on the payroll. The company manages more than 200 residential accounts along with 15 commercial accounts, mostly largescale residential communities.
Hospital in Orlando, the Myers became acquainted with the staff and volunteers at Candlelighters of Brevard (a non-profit organization offering emotional support and financial assistance to families of children with cancer), and a twofold philanthropic mission developed. First, to help support the organization: for this, Myers Lawns sponsors the organization’s annual Have A Heart Ball; additionally, Myers donates 50 percent of the first month’s billing on all new contracts to Candelighters.
“It’s been a steady climb, and a good one,” he said. But not always an easy one.
Second, to donate “lawn time” to families battling cancer: for this, Myers Lawns Foundation works with staff and resources at Myers Lawns to help families with children that are fighting cancer. They organize events at family homes to trim trees, hedges and grass, lay mulch, and other yard work as identified.
In 2011, after establishing a foothold in the community, the Myers happily welcomed their first daughter, Addisyn. At six months, the infant was diagnosed with stage one cancer (Wilms’ tumor) in her kidney. After removal of that kidney and a 10-day stay at Arnold Palmer
“We were so lucky with Addisyn. She left the hospital cancer-free and never had to go through chemotherapy. We want to give back to help others who may be going through the same thing we were,” he said. (Now six years old, Addisyn remains cancer-free.)
Expanding the scope of the business, Myers is focusing on grow ing three branches of the business:
1.
.Pavers – Myers recently began paver installation services. Although a seemingly seamless process, there are many considerations when adding pavers to a driveway or landscape, such as coordinating w ith utilities (to avoid digging up or striking buried cables or pipes), slope issues, proper edging and using the best base materials for the project.
2.
3.
“
Our goal is to provide the best advice about plants and trees, and to make it as easy as possible for our clients to manage their yards. I wouldn’t recommend anything I wouldn’t want myself.
Tim Myers
“
L andscape - Services are evolving as Myers and his team provide one-on-one consults w ith clients to identify specific needs and address the gardening and plant maintenance challenges for a community situated by the sea.
Tree Trimming and Removal – Myers second business, The Tree Professionals, carries certifications in power line trimming, bucket truck operating, hazardous removals, roping and rigging and Bobcat operating to assist residential and commercial customers w ith tree and stump removal, tree trimming and pruning.

To be certain, and to not offend, there is not a place listed here that Palm Bay women are not fully encouraged to visit. We’ve tried to highlight and present an overview of those particular services, activities and destinations that for some reason lend themselves to this Father’s Day issue. We know that as the first iteration of this map, it is fraught with omissions, but we like that. Why? Because we know you’ll let us know those hidden and less obvious gems that we’ve not included, and NEXT year’s map will be even better. Behold above the beginning of a new standard… the Man Map.

Haven
Organic Mattress Haven announces the grand opening of their second store in Melbourne Village.
Diane DiLeo, owner and operator of Organic Mattress Haven, knew there was a need to open a Melbourne store for the past several years. “Many of our guests have had to take quite a long drive to get the healthy, non-toxic mattresses they wanted,” DiLeo said, further explaining that many people, who really wanted their products, were not able to make it down to their Vero Beach location, so she made it her goal to open a Melbourne store. Organic Mattress Haven specializes in organic latex mattresses, natural memory foam mattresses with no petroleum or solvents, natural spring mattresses, pillows, mattress pads, and sheets. They also carry crib mattresses and baby bedding made from organic cotton. Many of the mattresses at the store are made from organic latex, which is cradle-to-cradle organic certified. The outer casing of the mattress is organic wool and cotton. There are no chemicals or off-gassing in these products. The new store is twice the size of their original location and features a new line of kids’ mattresses from Little Lamb Organics, as well as organic toppers and linens from Suite Sleep, and all natural memory foam products from Magniflex, Italy. Serta is also a featured brand; their foams are Certipur-US made, certified to be safe from any known toxins associated with many of the foams used in mattresses today. Organic Mattress Haven also knows that sleep is an extremely individual process. Their organic latex mattresses are available in different support levels and can be customized to anyone’s taste. “One person may like a firm feel, and another may want ultra-plush,” states DiLeo. “There are no compromises needed when it comes to a good night’s sleep.” The Italian memory foam mattresses from Magniflex also offer dualcomfort mattresses. Organic Mattress Haven aims to help you “breathe healthy, rest healthy, and sleep healthy.”

FrogBones and the
Double Tapp Bar & Grill Story and Images by Steven Hicks
O
ne of the more enjoyable aspects of my work here at SpaceCoast Living has to be the restaurant reviews. My family loves to eat out, so I try to make family outings of these reviews. But what happens when this writer is out with friends and says he’s reviewing Frog Bones? That table for four that manager Wayne Torpy so nicely reserved for me became a party of 20. Everyone had either heard of the place or had already been and couldn’t wait to go again.
A couple of details: if you have any kind of alcoholic beverage with your meal, you are not allowed in the shooting range area. Period. No exceptions. This isn’t shooting targets with a burger in one hand and a Sig Sauer in the other. These are two distinct activities. You eat, you go shoot. Or you shoot, you go eat. Some go just to eat, some go just to shoot, or shop. More on that later. The division here is Frog Bones is a “Family Shooting Center” and the restaurant is the “Double Tapp Bar and Grill.” The only guns allowed on the restaurant side are those of the guests and they must be cased. ►► june 2017 : 67

irst the food. This is a place for a broad range of comfort foods. Wings, burgers and meat loaf. There are also wraps, salads, pizzas, ribs and sandwiches. And yes, frog legs. There are a half-dozen or so full-on dinners on the menu as well, mostly expanded versions of the smaller sandwiches or baskets, apart from the 12-ounce New York strip. With so many people in tow, I saw a good representation of the entire menu, and didn’t hear a single complaint. I’m a sucker for a good meat loaf and can tell you that alone was worth the trip. My youngest son, 11, enjoyed dinner from their “Small Caliber Menu.”
We started with the cheese curds and fried gator tail (with “gator goop” dipping sauce), and then ordered a variety of salads, burgers, meat loaf and wings. To a person, we were pleased. Our servers were excellent and attentive, and the food was freshly made and delivered quickly. The restaurant side was bright (but not too) and spotless. There is a bar also, but they’ve balanced the presentation perfectly. You feel neither like you’re in a bar with a seating area, or in a restaurant with a bar stuck in the corner. If you wanted to enjoy a cold beer after your range time, it certainly was an inviting proposition. When I asked for a dish to be prepared for the cover photo of this article, we needed to take the food to the range side for the photo. They would appropriately not bring the gun to the restaurant side. I appreciate that kind of attention to detail. The combining of these two concepts (a restaurant and a shooting range) has been extraordinarily well-thought out and implemented. As one who raised a questioning eyebrow when I heard the local news about the owners applying for permits for such a place, I now see and agree with what they’d wanted to build, and celebrate its place in our community.
Don’t think of this as a guy’s place; women love to shoot, too! (L to R) Kristie Escalera, Dina Reider-Hicks, Karina Rodriguez, Barbara Sharrow

ow on to FrogBones Family Shooting Center. I do not own a gun, though I am not averse to having one. In years past, I have owned shotguns and hunted infrequently. Many of those in our family’s circle of friends do own guns. Some are law enforcement officers, some have a history in security operations, some just collect. In other words, we’re a typical Florida family. Two of the families who joined us brought their own guns, and we enjoyed learning from them as we shot their pistols, but you can rent a variety of guns at the range. The process is fast and simple. You fill out the necessary forms, show ID, grab eye and ear protection, rent a gun of your choosing, and buy ammunition and targets. You purchase a booth rental in the range, and you can share it with three other people. There are yearly memberships as well, and a few of those with me this night left seriously considering that option, which is not an expensive proposition in any construct. Obviously, with bringing in a party of 20, the range was busy. It occurred to me while we were getting ready that not
Safety briefing provided by FrogBones staff for new guests

FrogBones is a great place for a little father/son time
once did we hear gunfire in the restaurant area. When you walk the hallway from restaurant to range, you enter the most amazing gun shop and hunting store with clothing, archery supplies, and gun supplies all presented in spectacular fashion. High ceilings like a lodge with exposed beams, where trophy heads abound, and all very well done. If you remember the first time you walked into Bass Pro Shop or Cabela’s, you’d be on point. It is that nice. To the rear of that area, past the range, is the actual gun shop. Again, well-appointed and very well stocked. There is an air of quality in every aspect of the presentation of the restaurant, range and gun shop. The staff is bright, engaging and very well-versed. By now you can tell that this is more than a restaurant review. This is the review of the entire experience, and one I’d recommend highly. If you don’t own a gun and never plan to, after your lunch or dinner you can satisfy a certain curiosity across the hall. Rifle or pistol, the staff can walk you through your first experience. If you’re attracted to the precision of target shooting, but not into hunting, you’re in good company here. There are very specialized guns for a variety of activities, as there are tools in any hobby, and there are experts here to guide you in any direction. If nothing else, it is a fascinating collection to see. Lastly, if you have any trepidation about the concept, I’d suggest going by for a light lunch. Afterward, walk over to the range side and look around -- that’s free. I’m betting you’ll be impressed by the atmosphere and professionalism, and maybe, just maybe find yourself wanting to do more. june 2017 : 69
MEN’S
Spring HEALTH
Weekend W Warrior And The
inter’s over, such as it is. Now, we’re all getting active again. SpaceCoast Living reached out to Health First’s manager of rehabilitation services, Olivier Corbeel, to learn more about getting back in the swing of things safely and successfully. Corbeel has been with Health First since 1991 and knows a thing or two about rehabilitation and perhaps more importantly, injury prevention.
with Health First’s Rehabilitation Service Manager
Olivier Corbeel
by Steven R. Hicks
Just to make sure we’re all on the same page, when Ed.D we talk about weekend warriors, we’re talking about those who do most of their exercise or activity over the weekend. During the week, they’re working and doing kid activities, and don’t necessarily have time to exercise. Then, over the weekend, these folks start doing an excessive amount of exercise or activity, and sometimes that can lead to injury.
Corbeel says the type of injuries he sees most often are sprained ligaments. To be more specific, the most common are ankle injuries, such as ankle sprains, the more traumatic Achilles rupture, plantar fasciitis and shin splints. “These are usually the people who start running again, getting ready for that summer race or spring race series,” says Corbeel. “But we also see a lot of the tennis elbows, wrist injuries and overuse injuries.”
Health First’s Olivier Corbeel
Also, there are low-back injuries. “That’s not necessarily from sport, per se, but it could be from people starting to be enthusiastic about redoing the yard or working around the house,” Corbeel says.

injury.” Corbeel’s suggestion is to listen to your body.
of the last season, before you went back to Wisconsin.”
“Research has always proven, especially with our senior population, or aging population, that exercise, even a little bit, is beneficial,” he says. “Not only for your general health, but also mental health, stress relief, delaying aging and delaying symptoms of aging. Staying in bed is the wrong answer.”
He then offered this cautionary tale: “Recently, we had a 50-year-old female martial arts instructor, a professional, who’d moved here from California. She hadn’t done much of the training since she’d arrived, but suddenly got called to do a demonstration. She would tell you, ‘I wasn’t trained, I wasn’t warmed up, I wasn’t prepared; I thought I could just do it again.’ So, it had been a few months, and she did a single move and tore her ACL, the anterior cruciate ligament, and her LCL, both at once. She didn’t realize that she didn’t have the same strength as when she practiced regularly.”
He added, “Before you start having tennis elbow, you’ll feel it. It’s not something that just comes on all at once. Tennis elbow is progressive. Learn when to back off when you first notice it.”
THE SECRET TO EXERCISING SUCCESS Here’s the secret to avoiding injury (and it really isn’t a secret). If you’re active, you know this (though you might forget), but even if you’re new to a particular activity, this is common sense. Learn how to warm up and to build back up to the intensity level you left off last season or last practice. “If you try to get back to, let’s say, playing tennis or golf for an hour,” Corbeel says, “maybe you should start halfway, with a less lofty goal. Start the first time with 20 minutes or so.” He emphasizes that stretching is very important, including stretching after activity. “One of the problems we have is that if we don’t exercise we lose some of the strength. We lose some of the flexibility,” Corbeel says. “If you warm up properly before your activity, you can feel whether you’re prepared to do more or not.” As opposed to directly starting an activity, when you warm up, you can get a fairly good idea of how your body is responding. Are you suddenly out of breath? Are you starting to experience pain? That should be a good indicator to maybe rethink that activity right then. Weekend warriors tend not to listen to warning signs. Corbeel outlines what often happens: “It will hurt a little bit, ‘…but I can tough it out. I can do this again.’ And then they go through the pain; now they get into inflammation. They get into
YOU CAN PLAY NOW AND PAY LATER “Take a golfer,” Corbeel suggests. “It’s June. He’s gone out and he’s not warmed up. If he stops and listens to his body, he’ll play again next weekend or in a few days when the soreness goes away. And maybe he’s learned from that and maybe he’ll do a little stretching next time. Better yet, maybe he starts an exercise regimen during the week to make himself more flexible. Or he doesn’t listen and injures himself.” Once injured, the window of time to return could be six to eight weeks or more. Corbeel wants the process to be clear. “Initially an injured athlete is going to consult with their physician,” he says. “If there’s a problem, then depending on the injury and its severity, the physician would recommend either therapy or more studies and tests.” “We see the same problem in tennis,” Corbeel says. “Most of it is overuse injury. People starting out in the spring play the five sets that they used to play at the end of last season. Then they play against people who have been playing all year long. So while certainly the warming up and stretching is important, don’t try to pick up where you left off at the end
If you start to feel something is off, maybe engage in some other activities (cross training) to build up your endurance during the week before you play golf, or in between 5K races. The alternative is that you risk missing that six to eight weeks through injury, rehab or worse. “If we’re talking about runners with shin splints or plantar fasciitis, they can be sidelined for six months,” Corbeel says. “A simple injury like that can ruin an entire season, and that’s not even considering the traumatic stuff.” DON’T NEGLECT THE HEALTH OF YOUR EQUIPMENT Corbeel offers one last tip. “Make sure that your equipment is in proper functioning order,” he says. “That goes a long way in preventing some injuries. If it is as simple as shoes, most likely the shoes that you used last summer are totally compressed and have absolutely no foam left, or no elasticity left in the sole. That’s a big cause of injury. I’ve also had many people come back with bicycle-related injuries, hurting terribly because they dropped the seat too low, and their knees were coming up way too high on their pedal stroke.” So, warm up. Stretch. Make sure your equipment’s in good shape, whatever that might be. Explore new shoes for any sport, because even the technology that’s changed from season to season can help you. And take it easy at first. Get everything tuned-up (including yourself ), adjusted and upgraded before you start this new season of activity. Then, work back up to that championship performance.

Keeping Brevard Beautiful common issue. At a recent event, more than 50 volunteers helped collect 5,600 pounds of trash and litter along the St. Johns River waterway. Just picture that in your mind. That amount of trash alone is an amazing and overwhelming problem, but these eco-volunteers continue to fight the good fight. After each cleanup, trash is weighed, separated (if not contaminated) and recycled when possible.
I
t’s no secret that trash has a negative effect on the community and the delicate balance of the ecosystem, especially in the ocean, rivers and on the beaches, but what options are open to us to make a difference? Picking up after ourselves is the obvious answer, but we are all aware that not everyone follows this simple solution. We also have the problems of ships either deliberately or accidentally dumping trash in the ocean, and material carried to sea by rivers and estuaries, especially from large coastal cities, and then not only hurting marine life but also washing back ashore. Enter KBB (Keeping Brevard Beautiful). Officially certified in 1981, KBB, through litter control, education, recycling and beautification programs and with the help of a network of volunteer groups, strives to maintain and improve the Brevard County environment. They hold multiple events throughout the year, bringing people from all walks of life together to tackle this 72 : spac ec oa st l iv in g
I recently met with the musical company, Kulcha Shok Muzik, who had organized a beach cleanup on Cocoa Beach as a network partner to KBB and set to work picking up trash. Kulcha Shok Muzik, whose work is often beach- and surfing-themed, do beach cleanups from Panama City Beach to Miami. They try to organize cleanups to coincide with their musical events and host about 10 events per year. Armed with my trash bag, gloves and trash stick, all provided by KBB, I set to work. My initial thoughts were that the beach looked clean and I would probably only find a few bits here and there, but I was wrong; I was shocked to see just how much trash is left behind or washed ashore on the beach and in the dunes. In under two hours, I had collected two full bags of trash consisting of cans, wine and beer bottles, packets, juice boxes, chip bags, plastic bags, a credit card, bicycle locks, cigarette butts, packets and silver wrappings, fast food packaging, straws and even a dead bird ‌ the list goes on. The group collected multiple bags of litter plus discarded beach boards, furniture, blankets, towels and a canopy. It was disheartening to see so much debris just left about, but uplifting to know that I had helped in some small way to remove it. After finishing up I sat down to talk to some of the volunteers to learn what motivates them. It was clear they are all passionate about keeping the environment clean.

They each have their shopping list of improvements they would like to see, but a sand grader beach cleaning machine stood out as a huge help to keep the beaches cleaner. Brevard County currently doesn’t have one. These dedicated individuals talked fondly of past events and many stories came up, like an event in Pompano Beach where 30 large buckets of cigarette butts were collected in one day (volunteers often concentrate on one type of trash at events because it makes a bigger statement about the problems at hand). I also met another “trashanardo,” Joe Whitson, who is a deputy sheriff in Osceola County, but attends cleanups up and down the Florida coastline. He is in the process of setting up a non-profit called BINAFIT, which aims to promote cleaning up the state’s beaches and getting fit at the same time -- volunteers would clean up for 15 minutes then break for group yoga for 15 minutes. Who knew picking up garbage could be fun? If you are interested in giving some of your time for a worthy cause, visit page 76 for upcoming events this month. 3

The King Center presents Sal Valentinetti Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts 3865 N Wickham Rd, Melbourne, 32935 The King Center presents America’s Got Talent sensation, Sal Valentinetti. The definition of an old soul with an olive oil voice and Italian charm, Valentinetti first learned the American standards at his grandmother’s knee and his passion grew further when he discovered his hidden vocal talent in his teenage years. His voice may seem like his strongest asset, but anyone who knows him, knows it’s his personality that shines brighter than the whitewalls of his Cadillac. “Sal the Voice,” as he is affectionately known by everyone, can be found on Sundays sipping cappuccino at a café, telling stories, making jokes and planning his next move. Valentinetti is a consummate, classy, old-school entertainer with a heart of gold.

June 10 Bottoms Up Beer Run Location: Wickham Park, 2500 Parkway Dr., Melbourne, 32935 The Bottoms Up Beer Run is a fun 4K that combines running (or walking) with homebrew along the way. Brewers from SAAZ (Spacecoast Associates for the Advancement of Zymurgy) will be providing five different homebrews for runners to enjoy along the course. Participants (21 years old and up) can consume four 4-ounce beer shots along the race course and finish with a full beer to celebrate their accomplishment. Those under 21 cannot consume the beer, but can still join in the fun. And if running and drinking is not your thing, we will have water along the course as well. The race is professionally timed by the Running Zone so you can race your way quickly to a personal best or take your time sipping along the way and laugh at how long it took you to do a 4K. More here. This will be a fun day with friends and family. Run in costumes or create a team theme. SAAZ wants to introduce the community to the fun hobby of home brewing and encourages participants to join our club and start brewing your own! Every runner will get a T-shirt and a bottle opener medal. Post-race refreshments available. Proceeds from the race benefit St. Baldrick’s and SAAZ. L
et’s end this Father’s Day issue with a tale of men becoming boys again, if only for an hour or so. This story takes place on a cool windy night in mid-April at Viera Regional Park. It is dusk, and two teams of would-be gladiators gear up and begin their pre-game drills and stretches for an epic battle between the fathers, older sons and coaches of Brevard Men’s Lacrosse (BML) and the Eastern Florida State College Titans, the college’s inaugural lacrosse team. How does this happen, and more importantly, why? The matchup was the brainstorm of Roger Welton, an offensive coach for ESFC and the founder of this local men’s league. What could be more fun to watch than a bunch of older men being schooled at lacrosse by the upstart late teen and early twentysomething Titans. Except that isn’t what happened at all. Many of these BML men played in college, some at a high level, and the game was not as lopsided as you’d expect… but in the third quarter, youth began to win out over drive and ambition and BML lost by a single goal. It was a great night of lacrosse and everyone walked away a winner.
SCL: Tell us about the game from your perspective. WELTON: It was the most fun I have had since college! I thought we competed very well and exceeded expectations. I think we would have had them if the game were about 10 minutes shorter. But my hat’s off to EFSC -- those guys played with class and sportsmanship the whole game. SCL: How did this come about? Was it a challenge made at practice that your team of old guys could beat the Titans? Who threw down the gauntlet? WELTON: As a first-year program, the Titans had a limited number of games this season, and one day at practice, I joked that if they wanted another game, they should take on the Men’s League. The Titans thought it was an awesome idea and when I reached out to the more experienced Men’s League guys that I thought would be capable of reasonably competing in this game, they were all in. SCL: Give our readers a little history on Brevard Men’s Lacrosse. WELTON: I played my last lacrosse game for Montclair State University in May 1996, graduated a year later, then went to veterinary school and jumped right into my career (Welton is the president and a DVM at Maybeck Animal Hospital in West Melbourne). Once I started coaching the sport again in 2009, I realized how much I missed the game and had been throwing around the idea for a Men’s League for some time. By 2014, we finally had enough interest and talent to make a go of it and and our first season was a blast. Now going into our third season, I would 80 : spac ec oa st l iv in g
L/R: Billy Gibbs, Greg Lee, Jorden Mas, Roger Welton
not be surprised if we end up with 50-60 guys this year. SCL: Do you play other leagues? Where are they? WELTON: That will be the next step in our evolution, I think. Given the success of the college game and my connection to that program as an assistant coach, we will likely make our game with them a yearly tradition. There are guys seeking outside competition so we will begin looking...I am sure we are not the only old guys reliving the glory days. SCL: If someone is interested in joining BML, how would they do it? What kind of experience is needed? When do you practice? When are your games? WELTON: The local lacrosse store sponsors the league, so once general registration is open, you can find it at the Viera Lacrosse and Sport website. No experience is required, but I would advise at least decent proficiency throwing and catching before joining. Games are weekly under the lights at Viera Regional Park; the day of the week is still to be determined. SCL: Do your kids play? What do they say when they see Dad out there playing? WELTON: : I have an 8-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter that both play lacrosse. My son loves the men’s games. After the college game, he said, “Number 20 looked pretty tough out there, Dad.” (We both wear number 20).
