Without a Heart, it’s just a machine. So in 1971, a little Heart built a different kind of airline—one that made sure everyone could fly. Everyone has important places to go. So we invented low-fares to help them get there. To us, you’re not 1A or 17B. You’re a person with a name, like Steve. Here, we think everyone deserves to feel special, no matter where you sit or how much you fly. And with all the places we’re going next, we’ll always put you first, because our love of People is still our most powerful fuel. Some say we do things differently. We say, why would we do things any other way? Without a Heart, it’s just a machine.

FROM THE

STEVEN HICKS SENIOR EDITOR, SPACECOAST LIVING STEVE@SCBMARKETING.COM

Welcome to SpaceCoast Living’s September Arts issue. We love this theme for our September issue because we get to not only highlight the traditional arts on the Space Coast, but to spread our wings a bit and introduce our readers to some of the less traditional art being made here as well. In my opinion, most anything can be considered “art” in context. It isn’t a medium that makes something art, like paint or clay or pixels; it is the elevation of the skill, interpretation of the subject, and the presentation that causes a work to transcend the mechanics. You all know that perfect example; you see a new expressionist’s work and think, “I could have done that!” My 11-year-old said that out loud in a gallery in Virginia recently. I was mortified. He now thinks he’s destined for greatness in acrylics. Who am I to stop him? And we all know that standard response, “but they DID.” There is an artist in all of us. If you love what you do as a vocation or avocation, when that love and respect for the task rises above just getting it done, it can become art. You take photos with your phone, but when you stop and ask someone to look left, move the hair off their cheek and smile, it transcends the snapshot. When you take those chicken breasts off the grill, drizzle a reduction sauce and add a garnish, you’ve transcended what was required for dinner. And when you open the doors to your business to greet clients or customers each new day, you’re an entrepreneur, reasonably an artist in the medium of business, not just an employee with a job to do. So, when you grab your nice leather purse on the way out the door, look at it. Really look at it. Art. When you open the door to your car, step back before you get in and look at the design. Art. When your server places that salmon in front of you at lunch, take a look at the presentation. Art. Your dentist steps back to make sure your smile is perfect? Art. As you read through the rest of this issue, stop and consider the writers, photographers and designers who put it together each month. This is their art. And when your 11-year-old says he can do that, encourage him. That’s art.

piece he is working on for a couple in Tennessee. While he will do specific commissions or works that come from pictures he’s taken, he also will work on free form pieces such as “Ghost Ship #4,” a five-foot painting of a sunken ship that has commanded the attention of many gallery patrons. “I wanted to do more of an expressive piece, more than my traditional softer watercolors, something more striking, and I would say it turned out that way,” he said. “The painting has good depth that brings your eye from the surface of the ocean way down to the sea floor. This is created with a light to dark gradient.” LaMarr also enjoys creating non-painted works, such as the driftwood coffee table and channel marker tables that sit in the middle of the gallery. “I really enjoy making the coffee tables, because they’re obviously functional, but they’re also conversation pieces that people can use and look at every day other than traditional paintings on the wall, so they’re fun to create,” LaMarr said.

I

f you’ve paid attention to Brevard’s art scene for any amount of time, you’ve heard his name. His works have appeared in places such as Grills, The Avenue Viera and Starbucks; vivid aquatic pieces that grab the viewer’s eye and leave them in awe. Whether it’s the work of an underwater scene in deep blue tones, or the print sculpture hammerhead shark that leaps from a light blue and white wood frame, Eric LaMarr has crafted works that have captivated an audience for many years. LaMarr’s new art studio in The Avenue Viera allows viewers to look at current pieces and get a glimpse of what he’s working on.

When asked about his future goals, he mentioned possibly opening up other galleries in Brevard and other parts of the state. However, his goal has been to establish his roots in the county, and with the support of businesses, patrons, family and friends, LaMarr has been able to take his childhood passion and make a career out of it, persevering and growing a following along the way. “As a child I always kept with it and somehow along the way it went from a hobby to becoming my career, so it’s truly awesome that I get to do what I love and it’s my job at the same time,” he said. “I’m honored as well because not too many people can say that.” 3

LaMarr was born in Rockledge and went to then-Brevard Community College. He’d later go on to The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale where he earned his Bachelor’s in Illustration. At the end of college, Eric took a corporate job, working for Margaritaville designing art. It was something Eric always thought he would do, and while it was a great opportunity to have his art showcased to so many people, the company’s guidelines hindered his ability to make art the way he wanted. LaMarr decided to pursue a full-time career in art in 2008, selling his work at small shows and markets, developing connections with people throughout Brevard County. He also had his work in Grills in Port Canaveral as far back as 2005. With a following in the area, he utilized special art shows in unique locations once or twice a year to open more eyes to his work. He eventually worked with The Avenue to do murals inside Central Park, which sparked a thought for what would become the Art and Sea Gallery Pop-Up Gallery & Studio, a week-long event from April 28 to May 5. However, the event sparked another idea for him. “I approached them and said, ‘I’m really happy here; what can we negotiate as far as a contract?’ So we came up with an agreement, so this now goes to November,” LaMarr said. “So it started as a pop-up but I’ll be here until November 1.” Originally working mostly with watercolors, LaMarr has expanded to acrylics, utilizing expressive styles like an abstract september 2 017 : 23

Growing Ground Floor from the

Great Southeast Flooring America By Steven Hicks

N

elson Green, owner of Great Southeast Flooring America, grew up in Central Florida. When he graduated from the University of Florida, his first job was in advertising for Armstrong, a major flooring manufacturer in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Green wanted to move back to Florida, and knew the only way he was going to be able to do so was to switch fields or do something on his own. So he took a risk, borrowed some money from family and moved back to open his first store on Highland Avenue in 1979. The company quickly outgrew that location and moved into the old theater in Eau Gallie. Then, again growing so fast, he built a bigger facility on North Harbor City Boulevard. This family-owned business has now been there since 1987.

We’re always growing Green’s son Chris said, “What helped us out in 1979 was that literally a month or two after we opened, Hurricane David came through. We had a ‘flood’ of business, which

24 :

spac ec oa st l iv in g

was unfortunate for many, but fortunate for us. It just snowballed from there, with the advertising that dad has consistently done over the years. He’s very big on it and makes sure his brand is out there consistently. Even during the lean years when the economy was bad, we didn’t lose a whole lot of our business. I think that’s because we didn’t stop advertising, we didn’t cut back, we kept our name out there. During that time, a lot of people came in and said, ‘You’re the only ones out there advertising. That’s why we’re here.’” Continued marketing has always worked very well for Great Southeast Flooring America. They had a record year, their biggest year ever, a non-hurricane year, in 2015. Chris Green joined the business in ‘92. He was 22 years old, out of school and needed a job. “I was fortunate to have something to fall back on. I learned this business from the ground up,” he said. “I’ve done everything. I’ve worked with installers when I was in high school during

the summers. I’ve swept the warehouse floors. I’ve worked in the warehouse. I’ve done pretty much all the positions in the office. I’ve done sales. I’ve done everything, and it eventually evolved into managing and helping my father out.” Zach Green, Chris’ younger brother who also works in the business, added, “It makes you appreciate everybody’s position within the company, and how hard and difficult each job can be. You learn first-hand the challenges that they run into every day.”

Working with homeowners

Chris Green says, “Our preference is to work with the homeowner. We can control the scheduling and we can guide them and help them pick the right products. They come looking for advice; they want better products, typically, and it’s a better result for all of us. We want them to be satisfied and taken care of. That’s the goal, and we pride ourselves on that.” Building on their success, even through the tough, national economic downturn, Great Southeast Flooring America has always looked to the future. When asked about expansion, Chris Green said, “We’re going to stay a single location for now. Within the next year, we’re going to remodel again. We did our last big remodel in 2004, so it’s time to update our showrooms.” Zach Green added, “We’re seeing a little bit of a trend flip right now. As much as people love hardwoods and how beautiful they look and how natural they are, the high-definition imaging on ceramic tile and in vinyl right now is giving people the ability to get the exact same look as wood and to not have to worry about moisture problems.” “I’m very, very proud of what my dad has built with very limited knowledge in the beginning,” Chris Green said. “He’s built a great business, and we’re constantly evolving, we’re constantly learning, we’re constantly changing. Every day we’re learning something new within our business to try to make it better. That’s what our goal is. I feel like we have taken it to the next level as far as how big we’ve become. It’s a testament to what he started.” 3

Plan Party NOW! YOUR

Island Pasta

Island Pasta Breezeway

River Rocks

26 :

spac ec oa st l iv in g

While this is only September, now is the time to plan those holiday parties and get-togethers! Two of the most popular restaurants in our area, River Rocks and Island Pasta Company, are already booking events. SpaceCoast Living talked to Terrence Crovo of the Thornado Hospitality Group about these local icons.

The Power Behind High-Level Financial Guidance.

Crovo tells us, “One of our priorities right now is on our event and banquet space. We’ve begun to emphasize that aspect of the business. Located in Historic Downtown Melbourne, Island Pasta offers an entirely separate event space across from the actual restaurant. It’s a great venue for corporate events, but also for small intimate receptions, baby showers and parties. River Rocks, located off the beautiful Indian River Lagoon, offers waterfront views. It has a high brand awareness and when people plan an event held at River Rocks, it’s perceived as really special.” Not everyone wants an event at a local restaurant or banquet facility; sometimes an event needs to be at corporate headquarters, branch office or even at someone’s home. “If you can’t have your party at River Rocks or Island Pasta, having it catered by us can carry the same panache,” Crovo said. “We’ve just started outside catering from River Rocks, and we’re excited about the possibilities.” Both locations began booking holiday dates last month, so now is the time to get your party planning into high gear. Crovo says, “Besides the many holiday parties, we also hold meetings weekly with financial groups, clubs and pharmaceutical companies. We host quite a few different events in our banquet space, from small groups to booking the entire restaurant. We can cater events on-site with heavy hors d’eouvres, buffet or plated selection.” Events at Island Pasta will comfortably hold about 75 to 80 people. Crovo adds, “Depending on the weather, in cooler times, we can accommodate larger groups by adding the breezeway area. We’ve had events book the entire restaurant and banquet space as well.” Events at River Rocks run the gamut from 50-100 to a couple of hundred when booking the entire restaurant. River Rocks offers multiple areas, rooms and bars to customize the space for your group. Catering by River Rocks is just now coming online. “This is an exciting new venture for us,” Crovo says. “We’re starting with a small offering and have done several events privately which has allowed us to test the waters.” Now is the time to put a little extra push in your party planning. There are still good dates available at both locations for big or small events through New Year’s Eve.

Art Cruise on a

By Steven Hicks

I

can reasonably assume based on our magazine’s demographics that most of our readers have either been on a cruise, or seriously consider one as a viable choice for a vacation. We live with one of this country’s great cruise ports in our backyard. So I can talk to you, then, about this mysterious part of the cruise ship that you either are drawn to, or avoid at all costs: the art gallery. The cruise director will often call out specials and auction times every couple of hours. But what really goes on there? Should you stop in? Is the art they’re selling really worthwhile? The answer to all of these is, “Yes!” and that comes from this skeptic.

Up until this most recent cruise, my wife and I shied away from the art auctions. This latest trip, however, we travelled with another family of close friends, and one of the regular highlights of their previous cruise experiences are the auctions. So we tagged along. To be honest, there was a lot of art that just wasn’t our style. We admired Peter Max’s groovy 60s style, and some of the more modern art combining photo-realistic elements in surrealistic compositions that were featured on this cruise. Your tastes will certainly differ. There were cartoon cells from famous animated films, and they seemed to generate a lot of interest. And then there was a small percentage of paintings my wife and I both gravitated toward. A little expressionist, a little conservative, probably very mainstream to most, but heck, we ARE very mainstream. The curators of the auction are trained to see that, and we’re given a drink and a raffle ticket to come back for the auction later in the week.

So here are the rules for buying art on a cruise. Rule one, there are no rules. Go look. It’s free. Imagine it in your home. Imagine a friend saying, “That’s nice, is it new?” and you say, “Oh yes, we bought it on a cruise.” Nice. Agree on one or two choices and wait for auction day. If there is a rule, I’d say don’t go to the auction without an agreement on spending. Auction day came around, and by then we’d settled on an artist and agreed on a general budget. There were a dozen or so prints by this artist, as well as adorned prints (lithographs on which the artist adds paint) and originals. The price range here was from a couple of hundred dollars for a print to thousands of dollars for an original. The gallery space was transformed into auction seating, the rules were explained, and the auction began. There was very little actual bidding among the audience, but some very expensive pieces were quickly sold. They’d bundle pieces together for a better package deal and have some really inexpensive in the mix. They make this all very inclusive. Then our preferred painting, an adorned print, came up. After two glasses of free champagne, my wife and I were ready. The piece we’d eyed started much higher than we’d planned. We looked at each other, shrugged, and kept our hands down. The curator we’d seen all week saw that we did not bid and came over. We said that it was just more than we’d wanted to pay. Our friend, the experienced cruise art buyer, said to the curator, “I like that one, they like this one; bundle them,” and they did. One bid, two pieces, and a better price for us both. After the auction, we sat with that curator, arranged payment, picked a frame (or not), exchanged contact information and were done! They make it amazingly easy to spend a lot of money. About six weeks later, a crate was delivered with our framed painting, and we love it. It was an awesome experience. It now hangs in our family room, and we’re proud to share the story. Wait! You’re wondering if it will hold its value? Is it investment-grade art? Maybe, but that’s an entirely different discussion for you and an investment counselor. We just wanted something we liked for the family room with a story behind it, and maybe to spend a few hours less in the casino on the cruise. 3

celebration

By Ryan Randall For many, September is a cherished time, not because of the change in the weather or leaves (especially if you live in Florida). No, the month is looked forward to by so many because it marks the start of the college football season and the things that come with it. Things such as tailgating. For the local alumni clubs around Brevard County, pigskin parties are done in a variety of ways. Clubs such as the Brevard Seminole Club and the Space Coast Gator Club have bus trips to weekly games, where they will get a more traditional tailgating experience. However, for those not making the trip, there are plenty of options back home. The Brevard Seminole Club, which has been around for 30 years, has a kickoff party at the beach, providing a tailgate atmosphere for three to four hours. Visitors will bring a potluck side dish, while the club cooks hamburgers and hot dogs. The atmosphere continues for all of the televised games through watch parties at the club’s main site, the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge, in Melbourne. However, there are watch parties at various restaurants in Cocoa and Doubles in Satellite Beach. The watch parties are a place for alumni and fans to connect in the area. “You can go to a new city and sit around and do nothing for a long time and not meet a lot of people or you can get involved with something like our Seminole Club and suddenly you’re talking about the same players and team with other people,” Bill Johnson, Brevard Seminole Club president said. “So it gives a sense of connection, I think.” The Space Coast Gator Club hosts a halftime raffle to benefit the club’s scholarship fund, and has held their watch parties at various sites in Brevard. “Locally, we hosted five football watch party locations last year (Broken Barrel, in Palm Bay; Old School Pizza, in Melbourne; Buffalo Wild Wings in Viera; A N.Y. Pizza House in Satellite Beach; and Dixie Crossroads in Titusville,” said Amanda Ferguson, Space Coast Gator Club president. “We have our ‘Two Bits’ cheer before the game the UF fight song, and ‘We Are The Boys’ (played at the end of the third quarter), cheers playing through each location’s sound systems. We even sing the alma mater after the game ends.” 30 :

WHAT IF YOUR

WealthConfidence

has less to do with the amount of money you have and more to do with your mindset?

There are eight different mindsets that contribute to an improved WealthConfidence.

32 :

spac ec oa st l iv in g

T

here are two ways to look at the world: with a mindset of abundance or a mindset of scarcity. An abundance mindset contributes to WealthConfidence. A scarcity mindset does not. Proponents can make arguments for each mindset since there appears to be plenty of evidence on either side. An abundance mindset is a personal choice.

What is your

WealthConfidence?

If you listen to the headlines, you can easily get sucked into perpetual fear. Yet, if we look around at our individual situations, we find that we have it pretty good, in some cases very good. But those fearful headlines can overshadow the enjoyment of the wealth in our lives that includes more than just money; like our families, health, living conditions, leisure activities, etc. How do you develop an abundance mindset and improved WealthConfidence? Focus your WealthPlan on what you have (not what you don’t), what you can control (not what you can’t), and the decisions you must make to create the financial future you have in mind. When you do this, you can focus your energy into the activities that will directly impact your life and the lives of those you love, and avoid being knocked off track by issues you probably can’t do much about anyway. Are you struggling with the complexities that wealth can bring? Answer the following questions: 1. What is your current financial condition? Benchmark yourself 2. Are you ahead of or behind where you should be by now? Gap determination 3. Will what you are doing now get you where you want to go? Decisions assessment Complimentary resources that can help you answer these questions and more are available to you. Let us know if you would like to take advantage of them. Improved WealthConfidence can be yours today!

Wealth is more than just money.

True wealth includes things like relationships, where you live, your health and your hobbies. With higher WealthConfidence, you can better enjoy the abundance that is all around you.

Eva and Mikey Puffer of Palm Bay show some of the crafts made at Bright Star, a program offered by Hospice of Health First. Mikey has utilized the Melbourne facility’s grief services since his dad died five years ago of lung cancer.

Health First community resource offers an outlet for kids to mourn the loss of a loved one – and a chance to see they’re not alone.

s Mikey Puffer flipped through the green pages of his memory book, he explained he wrote it when he was 9 and couldn’t draw very well. His smile beams in his school portrait, pasted onto the first page. “If I could have one wish, it would be that my dad was still alive,” Mikey, 13, solemnly read aloud. “But at least he’s not suffering anymore.” It’s been five years since the Palm Bay boy lost his 43-year-old father, Mike, to lung cancer. His mother, Eva, was 37 when she became a widow on September 5, 2012.

“We’re doing our best to make it; we have our ups and downs,” said Eva, who works in the pathology lab for Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center. “Parents aren’t supposed to lose their children, and children are supposed to be older when they lose their parents. But that’s not the way it Mikey made “My Memory Book About My Awesome Dad” works sometimes.” during a visit to Health First’s Bright Star Center for Grieving Help During the Grief Process Children and Families in Melbourne. We’re all loved one. As the largest provider of philanthropic health care supportive of each other. At Health First’s Palm Bay Hospital came the diagnosis no one wants to hear. “I remember the doctor walked in and said, ‘It’s time for hospice,’” Eva recalled recently, sitting in her family room, the walls covered with collages of her family – Mike, Mikey and her daughter, Kimberly, 19. “His oncologist… I remember him crying as he told Mike how long he had left.” Mike was admitted to Health First’s William Childs Hospice House in Palm Bay Hospital. “We weren’t leaving his side,” she said, admitting it took coaxing from a relative to even hop in the shower. She thought, “‘I’m afraid if I go in there, he’s going to leave.’ And I didn’t want him to be alone.”

The Hurricane Room The two continue to utilize the community resource to this day, which is free and open to the public, and has helped more than 2,800 children and 850 families since opening in 2000. “They’ve kept us around because they know that we need the support,” Eva said of the group therapy and creative, positive play. “I just don’t know what I’d do without them.”

Terry insists that peer-based support groups are most beneficial for children, demonstrating in a comfortable environment that they are not alone in their pain. Camp Bright Star is held twice a year, providing a day’s worth of remembrance and fun. “Children who are grieving, they’re not broken,” Terry said. “They find friends here. hile it is often said material things are of little note when compared to the people and events that make up our lives, the sentiment associated with some of those possessions transforms them, in our eyes at least, into more than just objects. They become tangible memories of the people and moments in our lives that matter most, and the stories that shape us. For Lisa Garcia Bedolla, a professor and director of the Institute of Governmental Studies at The University of California, Berkeley, the true value of these heirlooms was most apparent when she was awoken in the middle of the night and forced to flee her home country of Cuba. Only able to bring with her what she could carry, she was faced with the difficult task of leaving most of her possessions behind, with the exception of three diamonds that her grandmother had given her. Finding herself removed from her home, with no way to retrieve the heirlooms of her past, Garcia Bedolla felt the need to create something that would commemorate their story. She eventually turned to Peter Indorf, of Peter Indorf Designs, who understood exactly what she was looking for in the piece. “She had no history that she could pass onto her children or family,” Indorf explains.

So he set out to create a new piece of history for his client: a ring that would incorporate those three diamonds from Garcia Bedolla’s grandmother, the only material artifacts of her family legacy that she was able to escape with. While the first ring he created after their discussions was beautiful, they both felt that it didn’t exactly fit their vision, so Indorf gladly went back to the drawing board. “I’m very committed to making sure that there’s a satisfaction. It’s not so much about the transaction, it’s about the relationship. That’s very much a part of what I do,” Indorf explained. Through this collaboration, utilizing Garcia Bedolla’s story and Indorf ’s creativity, he crafted a breathtaking final product. “Peter created a family heirloom that will be cherished by me and future generations of women in my family,” Garcia Bedolla said. Indorf ’s 44 years of experience, paired with his understanding of the invaluable nature of these heirlooms, leads to pieces that are not only beautiful to any outside admirer, but invaluable to those whose stories they contain. With the skills and knowledge of Indorf to guide her, Garcia Bedolla was able to take the artifacts of her family’s history and create a monument to its beauty, strength and perseverance. 3

A Thriving h

Arts & Cultural Scene in Brevard County By Neil Levine

Experience All Of It! There is so much going on here in the Brevard County arts and cultural scene. Depending on the day and your mood, you could decide on something uplifting, inspiring or perhaps challenging. Do you enjoy music? We offer a number of concerts in any genre - rock, pop, blues, jazz or symphonic music – at indoor and outdoor venues throughout the county. Or would you prefer festivals? We have some extraordinary ones, such as the Space Coast Art Festival, the Melbourne Art Festival or the Art of Sustainability in Palm Bay featuring kinetic art. Or maybe you are more interested in the broad offerings of the Friday evening street fests in downtown Melbourne, Eau Gallie, Palm Bay or Titusville. Or perhaps you’d like to pursue an independent, artistic venture, like taking an art class and learning how to paint, sculpt

or draw. Regardless of your fancy, Brevard County certainly has plenty to offer, and we can help you discover some amazing experiences. When we think about “arts and culture,” the definition that comes to mind may simply be one tied to the performing or fine arts – paintings on walls or performances at your local theater. But the word “culture” describes so much more; it’s who we are, how we express our interests, and the values we celebrate in our daily lives. Even going to the pub and having a drink with friends is a cultural activity! Other activities that we may enjoy with the whole family, like going to the zoo, are also part of our culture. And while describing a person as “cultured” may have you thinking of someone who regularly attends the theater, I’d challenge you to think about it much more broadly; there is no part of our lives that arts and culture does not touch in some way or another. Using this context, we can see the arts as a part of culture, certainly more than just visual arts, but something that embraces all of our creative expressions. By taking a closer look at the day-to-day lives of our community, you can see how the arts and culture impacts us all, everyday. “Brevard County has the 10th largest school district in the state and is teeming with opportunities to add art to the equation,” said Jill Reyes, BCA Board Chair and Director of RSM US LLP.

"

Brevard residents have access to quality programming all around us. From theatre and art galleries to phenomenal cuisine and fantastic murals. Shane Burgman, BCA Board Member and Sales Partner at the Carpenter Kessel Homeselling Team

And that is already happening in our school system. For example, Brevard Public Schools and Brevard Cultural Alliance (BCA) work together to embed local artists into classrooms to assist students in learning sophisticated math and engineeringrelated concepts through the application of art. This approach is used all over the world to help people more easily understand complexity. A great example is NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL), which employs some of the smartest people on the planet, those who understand mathematical theories, rules of physics, compositions of atoms and distances from stars, yet they have an artist in residence to translate these obscure scientific concepts to the public, in a manner we can all “get.” So, art can even end up affecting the way we think about science and the universe, and this is merely one way that creativity sparks new levels of ingenuity. Don’t think for a moment that our local scientists and engineers themselves aren’t engaging in and benefiting from the arts and cultural offerings around them as well. “One might be tempted to think that aerospace professionals only need spacecraft and advanced aircraft to keep us happy here on the Space Coast, but I can assure you that the same people who launch humans to explore the heavens and support the men and women of our armed forces value arts and culture in their personal lives and the lives of their families. If we are going to prosper and grow as a community – we must

provide music and theater and sculpture and painting and the host of artistic delights that feed the souls of our high-tech workforce,” said local Joe Mayer, Lockheed Martin Director of Government Relations.

Arts & Algorithms Digital Art Festival, downtown Titusville

We must also involve the youth in our (and every) community that may have little means of self-expression. Art and culture lends voice to them and challenges their thinking. This helps create the civilized society in which we’d prefer to live, in which we all prosper and grow. It requires we immerse our children in art and culture, giving them every opportunity for positive expression. From a more business-centric standpoint, you may not have realized the arts and cultural sector is an economic engine that’s helped the Space Coast emerge from some very difficult times over recent years. A recent study of last year’s economic impact data is an excellent example, showing 1.87 million attended local events, and that activity contributed $71.3 million to the Space Coast’s GDP. The study illustrated that around 20 percent of attendees are visitors and that they spend more than double that of residents; spending money on tickets, but also purchasing souvenirs, and eating and lodging while in the area. A compelling arts and cultural offer is a significant contributor to any community’s economic health, and Brevard’s sector continues to do us proud. Lynda Weatherman, President & CEO of the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast, had this to say about the importance of arts and culture to attracting jobs and commerce: “Quality of life is an essential element to attracting talent and investment for any community. The art and culture on the Space Coast not only enhances our quality of life, but is a key factor in what makes Brevard County a great place to live and do business.” And when you think about ways to spend your hard-earned dollars, while retail therapy is great fun and does positively impact the local economy (if you spend your dollars locally versus on Amazon), it will never inspire you in the way a piece of music that reminds you of your first date, or the images that transport you to your happiest moments, or that painting that draws you into another world, will do. There are elements of art and culture all around us enhancing our community. Art is everywhere. Open your eyes to it wherever you go. You may notice that, whether you are walking through the Orlando Melbourne International Airport, the Brevard County Government Center, the Planetarium or many other local businesses, there are beautiful works of art gracing the walls to enjoy. Those are all created by local area artists and exhibited by the BCA Art in Public Places Program, enabling hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors to experience local art. Now, there may be some in our community who tend to seek out entertainment in Orlando by habit – and certainly there is no scarcity of options in the world’s tourism center only an hour west of us – but I’d like to ask you to consider taking a closer look at what we offer right here in Brevard County. You may be surprised by all the opportunities that 42 : spac ec oa st l iv ing

surround you. And, if you’ve explored the options and still feel we need more – consider driving the change you’d like to see locally. Volunteer to join the board of a local arts and cultural organization. These boards can be great fun to participate in and, in addition to the fantastic networking opportunities they provide, you’ll be helping to shape the local arts and cultural scene for tomorrow’s residents, workers and visitors. Karen Montas, BCA Board Member and Managing Partner of Johnson & Montas P.A., Attorneys at Law, feels strongly about board involvement, “I believe one of the greatest privileges we have is the ability to love others. I participate on charitable boards because I want to love my community and the people around me. It is one of the keys to a meaningful life. In today’s world, it is easy to become self-consumed and hyper-focused on one’s small universe (e.g. spouse, kids, work). Actively participating with charitable organizations allows me to get outside of that and to actively love my neighbors.” It’s in your power to create the type of arts and cultural atmosphere here on the Space Coast that can be enjoyed by many generations to come. If you love the arts and feel passionate about making Brevard the best cultural destination it can be, get involved!

The Brevard Cultural Alliance can help facilitate opportunities for you to become a Board Member for local arts and cultural organizations. To learn more, email info@artsbrevard.org

I’m fascinated, too, by the people living under the Sable Palms of Brevard. Every subject of art has its appropriate expression, and Florida is a dreamland, best expressed in paint, photography and film. Window Shopping HOME

BLINDS OF ALL KINDS

By Meaghan Branham

When thinking about redecorating a room in your home, or even just sprucing it up, your first thought might not be of the window coverings. Paint color, artwork or furniture may take precedence for many of us before we ever consider the effect window treatments can have on the look of a room. As anyone who’s ever tackled the project of a redesign can tell you, window treatments, from blinds to shutters to shades, make a powerful difference. The team at Blinds of All Kinds in Rockledge understands the many unique factors that need to be considered when deciding on window coverings, and offer up more than just the usual services to their clients, from small projects to entire home redesigns. From their beginning in 1983, through a highly personalized and relationshipbased approach to each project, Blinds of All Kinds has distinguished themselves as a full-service business eager to go above and beyond. In addition to many options for blinds, shades and shutters, as well as repair and installation services, they offer consultations, even after hours and inhome. In these consultations, they carefully listen to each client to create a product or design concept that fits both the type of room and personal style of the client, while maximizing functionality. Often, what results is an unexpected design solution that surpasses expectations. Windows that present covering or design problems, such as those that are very large or uniquely shaped, are a common concern presented to Blinds of All Kinds, and they have several solutions on hand. While they 50 : spac ec oa st l iv in g

can help the client choose the perfect traditional blinds or shades and fit them to the window, in typical Blinds of All Kinds fashion they can also offer up a beautiful and functional alternative. Utilizing a Tableaux product created to look like wrought iron, the design team has been able to create window treatment solutions for otherwise challenging spaces. In the case of one client, a large transom window in their bedroom presented a design conundrum for the homeowner, who turned to the team for a custom solution. While a different company might simply “measure something, send it back, and install it, we come up with something that other companies can’t do,” said Sonja Polster, director of operations. They sought a different solution. Working closely with the client, they created a piece that was not only functional but beautiful. A perfect example of their highly personalized customer service, the team considered every element before ultimately pulling inspiration from the front door of the home. The finished product was a stunning piece that utilized a normally overlooked space, turning it into an opportunity for creativity and cohesion with other elements of the house. “It’s taking custom to a whole new level,” Polster said. Using the same product with a much different project, they were able to create a piece for one client’s kitchen. Polster explained, “she had this big opening in the kitchen that she hated, and we were able to put a faux iron piece there.” This small detail transformed the look of the room into one that the client loved. From windows, to room dividers and wall accents, to outdoor design pieces, the team has helped countless clients with big and small projects, well versed in carefully considering their specific needs and the requirements of the space. 3

CurbPro: A Complete Landscaping Company

By Ryan Randall

W

hen you see their name, “CurbPro, you may only think about their namesake quality concrete landscape curbing. With a large selection of colors, heights and stamps to shape your flower beds, or create a barrier along a section of the yard, concrete landscape curbing is a staple of the company that will accentuate your house and lawn. However, there is more to the company than just curbing. CurbPro offers a complete set of services to ensure your lawn is spectacular. CurbPro installs pavers in a number of styles. If you are looking for an old-world style, they can assist you with a classic design. Looking for something more contemporary? The company can create something modern for your home. CurbPro offers multiple paver colors and designs and installs on many outdoor areas, such as outdoor kitchens, fire pits, patios, driveways and walkways. In addition to installing pavers, they offer services to preserve the look of your walkway, driveway, sidewalk or fence via pressure washing. As dirt attaches to the surface of a house or walkway over time, the aesthetics of your house can be drastically altered. Pressure washing is a great way to ensure your home always looks pristine.

52 : spac ec oa st l iv in g

One Company, Many Options

If you’re looking to establish a landscape at a new home or replace one at your current residence, CurbPro has full landscape design and installation options. Whether it’s a minor enhancement or full overhaul, their crew of professional landscapers work closely with their customers throughout the entire process to deliver the best possible results. The company has dedicated specialists in lawn maintenance, equipment operations and architectural designs. CurbPro’s landscape installations include plant and tree installation, as well as sod delivery and installation. By having the company install plants, trees and sod, the homeowner is spared the process of researching which plants to use, the physical labor involved, as well as the cost of selecting individual foliage. Currently, CurbPro offers St. Augustine and Bahia sod. The company thoroughly preps every yard before sod installation, ensuring that it is done properly and with the best possible results. CurbPro’s installations are detailed yet easy to maintain for the homeowner, providing value in the process. In addition to landscape installation, they offer debris removal, whether to set up a new landscape or to rid an already established area of weeds, dead trees, roots and overgrown shrubbery.

Once CurbPro has installed a landscape, a great way to accentuate it and increase security is to utilize CurbPro’s landscape lighting. In addition to enhancing the landscape, the lighting increases resale value of the home. There are a variety of lighting styles available, including LED and energy-efficient fixtures that can save money on energy bills. The solid cast bronze fixtures can be Bluetooth and smartphone operated and CurbPro has the ability to create individual landscape zones with that lighting. When setting a landscape, one consideration is the materials to be used in the plant and flower beds. CurbPro offers rock and mulch installation, and both have benefits to your landscape. Mulch retains moisture and helps keep plants roots cool, which is beneficial due to Florida’s heat. While rocks get hotter than mulch in the summer, they are more of a permanent solution and can provide additional texture for a garden or yard. As seen through the many services offered, CurbPro does more than just curb installation. With seasoned professionals dedicated to providing service as premier as your landscape, making CurbPro your one-stop place for your outdoor needs is a valuable decision. 3

Going Native

Look to local plants for diversity and sustainability Words and photos by Steven Hicks

Michelle Tafoya is the information specialist at Rockledge Gardens and started working there about a year ago. Her passions lie in edible landscaping, permaculture, Florida’s native plants, and naturalization. She’ll help people with landscape planning, pathology issues with their plants, and designing gardens. She’s very excited to tell you that Rockledge Gardens is “going native.” While they have a good selection of native plants now, they are looking to expand their inventory. “Going native” is very important, and at least naturalizing your landscape is incredibly important these days. Climactic changes are forcing people to consider new choices in their landscapes. Tafoya and Rockledge Gardens are good sources for learning how to do just that. 54 : spac ec oa st l iv in g

Tafoya tells us that she meets many people new to the Space Coast looking to start or refresh the landscape at their home. “They’re noticing that everything they plant dies rather quickly, requires too much water, or dies from too much salt in their water. Naturalization to acclimated plants or Florida’s native plants is crucial as salt water intrusion in our wells becomes more prevalent with drought,” Tafoya says. As drought increases, salt water enters into our local aquifer and pushes a lot of tropical plants out of the picture. “Pests are incredibly bad because we no longer have very cold winters, so plant something that can withstand drought and cold and pests.” When you’re planning your landscape, establish the more permanent plants to be native. If you’re going to plant the more

typical tropical, non-native species such as Crotons and Ixoras, it makes it easier for those plants to thrive if they’ve got native plants around them, supporting the ecology of the planting area. Those “natives” support insect ecology and fungal or bacteria ecology. Tafoya adds, “Soil health is very important. It gives the bugs that are attacking your tropicals somewhere else to live. It gives them something else to feast on and live in, so they won’t hit your tropicals so hard.”

The Dirt is Just Different Here

Florida soil lacks naturalized topsoil. Tafoya tells us, “We mostly have sand, silt, and calcareous shell remnants in the soil here. Most non-native plants have no idea how to interact with this type of soil, so the roots of your non-native plants tend to have a very hard time getting

established.” Tafoya encourages you to put “lots of organic materials into your soil to create the topsoil.” Gardeners who have moved down here from up North are used to having a rich topsoil layer, but Florida, especially in the coastal areas, just doesn’t have it, so you have to kind of mimic that. However, with Florida native plants they’re already used to that. The Florida Native Plant Society (www.fnps.org) is very good with being able to help you understand which plants are naturalized and native to your specific area. “There are coastal natives, upland scrub hammock natives, lowland scrub natives, and lowland scrub hammocks. We can also help you to pick plants that are more specific to your area.” Tafoya loves the natives Rockledge Gardens offers. “We’ve got Gaillardia, Coreopsis and Blue-Eyed Grass. That’s a cute little Florida native that you’ll find around here. Where I live in Palm Bay, it’s all over my lawn. It’s so nice to look down and see these little tiny blue flowers coming up. It’s not actually a grass. It’s related more to lilies.” Rockledge Gardens also offers Rudbeckia, Silver Buttonwood and even Sea Grapes. “I know Sea Grape is a little crazy and aggressive, but it can be shaped to a nice standard.”

You’ll Want the Right Milkweed

“If you want to go for Milkweed, you want Swamp Milkweed, which is asclepias incarnata. That plant is more specific to our area. The problem with the also-common Tropical Milkweed is that it helps to perpetuate a fungus that can kill Monarch Butterflies. So while folks are trying to help out their Monarch population, they’re actually perpetuating the demise of local Monarchs with this fungal problem,” Tafoya says.

5

For butterfly gardening, Florida native plants are a must-have. They support native pollinators. Local butterflies are actually used to seeing particular flowers. “They’re looking for Coreopsis and Gaillardia, which reseed themselves and will provide ongoing food sources as a nectar plant with your butterflies, and Fire Bush or Passion Vine. These two attract the zebra long wing butterfly. If you want to attract butterflies, you have to have the plants they seek,” Tafoya adds.

7

But it’s not just butterflies you want to support. You want to support all other types of pollinators. There are actually many species of honey bees, ground bees and orchard bees that are still prevalent in Florida. They’re looking for native wildflowers. They’re not really looking for tropicals like hibiscus. They don’t really care for that. They like small, red colored flowers with numerous flowers on a plant. As you can see, this is more than just buying a couple of plants marked, “Florida Grown.” There is a science to this and Tafoya is ready and waiting to talk native plants with you at Rockledge Gardens. They also feature regular classes and seminars on the subject. Visit RockledgeGardens.com for a current schedule. 3 september 2017 : 55

IF YOU CAN’T STAND THE HEAT TAKE THE KITCHEN OUTSIDE By Steven Hicks

56 : spac ec oa st l iv in g

Y

ou can learn a lot at a realtor’s or builder’s open house. You can be perfectly satisfied with your home until you walk through the doors of someone else’s vision. My wife and I love going to open houses for the ideas we leave with. Furniture placement, color schemes, tile, plants and landscaping, and now as we are finishing up our pool and lanai, ideas for our outdoor space. And to those builders whose events we frequented, it pays off. We were perfectly happy in the 6-year-old home we built until we found out the model home we were visiting was for sale. Three weeks later, we’d bought the model. One of the trends we’ve seen over the past couple of years has been an explosion in the outdoor summer kitchen and how it is presented in the design of the home. We love seeing a large open deck without the screening but wonder about its practically. Some builders have added citronella misters to keep bugs away and allow a completely open outdoor space. It looks so nice without the screening. We’ve seen changes in screen designs with larger expanses of screening and less framing, and that’s a welcome addition. Designers and builders are making outdoor living an integral part of the house design with multiple disappearing sliders to open the living/family/great room to become one with the lanai. Florida is truly one of the few places where that can be functional. Brevard’s pool designers are onboard with this trend as well. They’ll likely include umbrellas and tables in the pool, benches under the water feature, and maybe even fire pits on the deck as options in their offerings. But the big news here is the summer kitchen itself. What was once essentially an outdoor bar with seating and a built in grill can now be a fully-featured tiki hut with separate beer and wine coolers, dishwashers, open flame barbecue pits, and even gas tiki torches and a thatch roof. Televisions, sound systems, WiFi and lighting are all standard features now. Your outdoor space can really be designed to rival an all-inclusive resort in Jamaica or the Bahamas, complete with a swim up area so you can refresh your Pina Colada, all while staying cool in the pool. This is what a “stay-cation” is all about. The handsome pool boy is, however, still an option. It takes a little planning in advance. Plumbing, gas lines and electrical outlets all come into play to make your space convenient and a reflection of your style. That’s the trick; you want everything you might need in place outdoors. Otherwise, you’re running back and forth too much to enjoy that glass of Chardonnay. Some builders leave rough-ins for these utilities for you to develop at a later time, so have a look. If not, adding the services is generally a small part of the overall construction cost. To those new to the area, if there is a better appreciation for living in Florida than pulling back that triple slider on a cool Spring or Fall (or even Winter) evening, it is grabbing a glass of wine from your outdoor bar while dinner cooks on the built-in grill in your summer kitchen. It is especially enjoyable to share with friends, most notably those who visit from colder climates. To them, this is a sign that you’ve arrived and are fully living the dream in Florida. 3 september 2017 : 57

t Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, students who “Start Here” are prepared to “Go Anywhere” – in college, career and life. By combining a challenging academic curriculum with a supportive and nurturing environment, Holy Trinity instills in students a lifelong love of learning. Founded in 1957 in the Episcopal tradition, Holy Trinity reflects the peace and joy of Christian values with an emphasis on educating the whole child – mind, body and spirit. The school opened on Sept. 3, 1957, as Holy Trinity Parish Day School and has occupied the historic school grounds at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, located on West Strawbridge Ave. in Melbourne, since that time. The founding rector, The Reverend Alex Boyer, envisioned a community school with an emphasis on the basic subjects, small class sizes and spiritual guidance. The school opened with just six classrooms, an office, and approximately 100 students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Since its inception, Holy Trinity has transformed itself from a small day school into the premier independent college preparatory school in Brevard County, building a tradition of rigorous academic programs, spiritual development, and record-setting athletics. In 2000, the school expanded to offer a complete program ranging from preschool through grade 12. Today, the original Parish Campus serves students in preschool through grade 6, while the 55-acre Pineda Campus, located off the Pineda Causeway between U.S. Highway 1 and Wickham Road, serves students in grades 7-12.

HOW DO YOU FEEL THAT HOLY TRINITY HELPED YOU TO “START HERE. GO ANYWHERE.”? “Starting here means starting with a leg up on most of the world. It means at baseline, you have someone in your life who cares enough about you to want the best for you, to want to send you to the best school around.

“It really is one of the best slogans I’ve ever heard and it’s so appropriate. Consider a tree for a moment, trees must develop deep roots in order to grow strong and produce beautiful branches – that is how I feel about Holy Trinity. By starting at HT, I was able to obtain a solid education grounded in faith, family and support. Now, because of those roots, I am able to go anywhere and do anything. I am confident in my abilities because I am confident that HT prepared me to be a great student and steward in the community.” TIFFANY MCKENZIE,, Attorney Bryan Cave, practicing in Trusts and Estates; Owner Vibe Ride, indoor cycling studio Holy Trinity Class of 2003 (first graduating class) Agnes Scott College, Bachelor of Arts, 2007; University of Florida, J.D., 2010; New York University, LL.M in Taxation, 2011

They have continued to provide guidance and offer their help when I face tough decisions. HT also prepared me to attend college out of state after spending 14 years in school 30 minutes or less away from home. Why Choose Holy Trinity? ”When I think of Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, I think of a community: •

A community of likeminded parents who expect and encourage academic excellence; A community of students who strive academically and athletically and who display leadership and civic responsibility; A community of educators from varied backgrounds who seek to impart their knowledge on young, impressionable minds; A community of spiritual leaders who teach children the importance of giving to those who are in need, or are less fortunate.

O

ver the past few years, Downtown Melbourne has become quite the destination for shopping, events and food. What was once a street with Meg O’Malley’s, Matt’s Casbah and Main Street Pub as its primary offerings, New Haven Avenue is now alive with new and interesting eateries. You could eat three meals a day downtown for a week and not visit at the same place twice!

Back on the Right Track But one of these “new” places has been there all along. Through thick and thin, or maybe feast and famine, Off the Traxx has weathered the storm that was the old downtown Melbourne and is now poised to reap in the ongoing renaissance. In many ways, the old Off the Traxx faced the same problems as Downtown Melbourne, trying to be everything to everybody, but under a new partnership group led by Billy Puzino, as well as Keith Johnson (GM), Keith Dawson (Night Manager), Linda Lentini (Bar Manager) and Kevin Reardigan (Kitchen Manager), Off the Traxx has surely found its way. Off the Traxx still offers food for any appetite, and is still a great place to go in the evening for wings and beers with friends, but the place has been revived. The food is better, the bar is better. The outside deck in the back is one of downtown’s hidden gems and features live music Wednesdays through Saturdays. It is still a sports bar; the perfect place to watch your favorite college or NFL football game (and maybe win $1000 every week!), but shoppers love the inviting tables looking over the street, and friends now find it ideal for a lunch after golf. If Melbourne has one thing in regards to restaurants, it is a discerning eye and palate, and Off the Traxx has raised their game to satisfy it, preparing some of the best food in the city in a modern, fun atmosphere. They’ve even improved the facilities and WiFi service.

68 : spac ec oa st l iv in g

Off the Traxx is actively involved in the community as well, supporting events like the Children’s Hunger Project, Junior Achievement initiatives, and the Boy Scouts. They realize the best way to succeed is to be a vital part of the community they serve.

Bigger is Better At Off the Traxx, bigger is better and that is seen in the portions and flavors. They try to exceed anyone’s expectation of quality by purchasing only the very best fresh ingredients. All their salads and veggies are cut fresh for entrée salads and pizza toppings. The menu features fresh dishes, all made from scratch. Try their signature French Onion soup, also made fresh. We suggest you try their Traxx Bruschetta, with chunks of vine ripe tomatoes, fire roasted red peppers, Vidalia onions, garlic and fresh basil tossed with olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette. It is served with fresh baked garlic baguette slices.

Go for Happy Hour, Stay for Dinner Certainly, you can count on Off the Traxx for Happy Hour specials, and we love that the domestic beers and imports are divided into “Home Team Beers” and “Away Team Beers,” but don’t be surprised if that after a beer and maybe some wings, you decide to stay for dinner. You’ll choose from pastas, seafood and signature dishes including their famous Boom-Boom Shrimp. Off the Traxx Pizzeria also serves the best pizza in Melbourne 7 days a week until 2:00 a.m. We’d said earlier that you could eat three meals a day downtown and never visit the same place twice, but you could also do very well to eat here three times a day and never order the same thing twice.

October 28th Be sure to put Off the Traxx on your trick-or-treat list this year as their third annual “Terror on the Traxx” attracts hundreds of costumed partiers along with food trucks, drinks and live music by Shwayze well past the bewitching hour on Halloween night. Follow Off the Traxx on Facebook for more details on this famous downtown event.

Off the Traxx is located at 918 E. New Haven Avenue, Downtown Melbourne open 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily. OffTheTraxx.com or call 321-327-2919. september 2017 : 69

ONE

Last Question

No issue on the Arts in Brevard would be complete without talking to Steve Janicki, the executive director for The King Center. The King Center is one of Brevard’s premier showcases for our local performing arts and a driver behind their growth and visibility.

SCL: How does The King Center support local arts initiatives? STEVE: The King Center has always been supportive of the many local arts organizations that make our community a great place to live. Brevard County is rich with culture, and we do everything we can to help the arts thrive locally. The Cultural Arts Showcase is a great example. Along with the Brevard Symphony Orchestra, the King Center presents the annual event that celebrates the performing arts and culture in Brevard County. Held at the King Center, the festival showcases the work of various arts groups across Brevard and includes the BSO’s free family concert among many other performances. This year marks the fifth anniversary of Cultural Arts Showcase. The event takes place on October 29 and is free to the public. More information is available at culturalartsshowcase.com. The King Center presents multiple in-house productions throughout the year. We can’t reveal the shows that have not been announced yet, but a great way to stay up-to-date on our events is to join our email list. Through the remainder of 2016 to this point in 2017, the agency has invested more than $1 million in targeting its message using the research provided by Facebook and Instagram. About a year ago we contracted with an official Facebook marketing partner to deliver our ads. We've been very impressed with how that worked. SCL: Who are your regular partners? STEVE: The King Center partners with many local arts organizations. We are pleased to announce the Space Coast Ballet Company will be presenting The Nutcracker at the King Center this December, which marks the company’s 15-year anniversary. The Nutcracker is such a wonderful holiday tradition for our community. The Brevard Symphony Orchestra is the King Center’s resident orchestra and offers season subscriptions for its concerts. If you have never been to a BSO concert, I encourage you to attend. Additionally, the King Center partners with the Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse each year to present our Summer Musical Theatre Project. This program gives children and young adults the opportunity to act, sing and dance under the direction of industry professionals. The program culminates with performances on the King Center stage. It’s such a 80 : spac ec oa st l iv in g

SPACE COAST BALLET COMPANY rewarding experience to see our kids learning and performing at the King Center. Also, check out the Harris Corporation Art Gallery in the lobby. Each month we present a new artist or artists. The artwork is on display for our patrons and the public to enjoy. SCL: How has that support grown over the last few years? STEVE: We have definitely seen an increase in attendance in our events, including the Cultural Arts Showcase and the various performances by local arts organizations that take place at the King Center. We take pride in being able to partner with the local organizations that share our passion for the performing arts. SCL: What’s next for The King Center in regards to the local arts scene? STEVE: The Cultural Arts Showcase would be our next big event. I’d encourage everyone to come check it out to get a taste of what ALL the local arts organizations are doing. It is October 29th, noon to 5 p.m. SCL: What are the challenges going forward? STEVE: Like many arts organizations, the King Center faces the challenge of attracting new (millennial) audiences while retaining current audience members. Becoming a King Center member, donating personally, or becoming a corporate sponsor is a great way to participate in your community, and of course, buy tickets to our events!
