WHY GO INTO WORK? CREATING A BEAUTIFUL, YET FUNCTIONAL, HOME OFFICE INTRODUCTION BY SARA SANTORA MANAGING EDITOR TIPS BY HARMONY LYNN GOODSON CONTRIBUTOR

T

he demand for remote work has significantly increased over the last decade. According to a 2018 article on remote.co, “More than 50% of people who telecommute part-time said they wanted to increase their remote hours … and 60% of remote workers in the survey said that if they could, they would leave their current job for a full-time remote position at the same pay rate.” Additionally, the article states that many young professionals in both the United States and Europe have “leveraged the use of technology to work remotely and live a nomadic lifestyle.” With these statistics in mind, it would be no shock to me that a number of you who are reading this work from home in some capacity, whether it be full-time, part-time or even one day a week. Studies have shown that the ability to work from home increases productivity and creativity. But, just as sitting at a desk in a dimly-lit office isn’t inspiring, setting up at your kitchen counter may not be the best place for those wanting a long-term, remote career. It is important to have a space that is both organized and creative. You don’t want a space that is too reminiscent of the office walls from which you are trying to escape. However, you do want a space you can call your own; a place that will allow you to focus on the day of work ahead.

I reached out to local photographer and content creator, Harmony Lynn Goodson, to ask for her tips in creating a beautiful, yet functional, space. She shared with us a variety of ways in which you can create a space that is perfect for work, as well as comfortable and personal. So, get to reading and then get to work! Your home office isn’t going to create itself.

4. Buy furniture for your home, not your office Opt for a nontraditional table and desk chair like this small dining table and velvet side chairs.

5. Conceal unattractive items Hide printers and cables in closed, backless cabinets and attach wires to the backs of table legs. Organize supplies, papers, and bills in decorative boxes, baskets and totes.

6. The kid stuff Keep adult items on higher shelves and kid-friendly supplies in easy-to-transport buckets on the lower shelves. Display kid art by hanging a few current pieces on a pin board and storing the rest in a kid designated cabinet space.

7. The finishing touch 1. The Look

Bring life to any space with house plants appropriate to your lighting conditions. Don't go overboard on the desk accessories.

Consider the overall flow of your home. Is the space visible from other rooms? Design your space with an overall style and color theme and stick to it, from the wall color to the accessories, for a well put together aesthetic.

2. Functionality Build and arrange your office furniture with the whole family in mind. Who will be using this space? Do you need more than one chair? Do you want it to be more of a social atmosphere or a private working area? Allow for ample storage by adding large shelves or built-ins for every member of the house.

3. Keep it contained Ditch the stuff you don't use and keep the office clutter from spilling into other spaces of your home. FA LL 2019: 7

or a company that’s been in business for as long as Hippo Roofing has, there are three paths down which it can go; the business can grow, the business can shrink, or the business can hit its peak and then plateau. Fortunately, for Hippo Roofing, the business is experiencing tremendous growth. Hippo Roofing’s signage has been a signature of US 1 for years. Though the roofing company will be remaining on US 1, Hippo Roofing will be taking its sign and moving it up the road, where it will adorn the building of the Roofing Center of Brevard. The Roofing Center of Brevard will be a 13,000 square foot service building complete with metal, shingle, tile, solar and metal fabrication services, among other roofing needs you may require. This new center will not only house Hippo Roofing, but also Pit Crew Roofing & Repair, Roofing Inc. and Metal Roof Outlet. The idea behind the operation is to provide the people of the Space Coast with any service they may need, under one roof (no pun intended). “Before [the Roofing Center], we were in two separate buildings,” shared Bill Stillwell, owner of Hippo Roofing. “To have people separated is an issue, so I decided to acquire all this space. For Hippo Roofing, the main goal was to have every member of its team together in one building. With the Roofing Center, that goal is being far surpassed.

I drove over to the new center to meet with Stillwell and talk more about the new operations. Before giving me too much detail, he took me on a grand tour of the center, and I was both shocked and impressed by just how large the building was. The first area that Stillwell showed me was, what will be, the training area. He explained that there will be a whiteboard, circular tables and a television set up for those coming into train, whether it be for production, sales or any other department within the roofing company. He then took me to see the manufacturing area. This manufacturing area will contain large machines that will be Imperial Cocoa setup to build, “Metal hip and ridge; valley; and drip edge and all that kind of stuff,” shared Stillwell. “So, we’ll produce that ourselves.”

under one roof. After all, aren’t these companies competitors? “We do mostly repairs whereas [Hippo Roofing] is mostly metal,” shared Brittany Cherup. “I’d say, 20% of the time we duplicate each other, the other 80% of the time we’re bidding on different things, so it never really matters.” Cherup and Stillwell explained that, though they share a familial relationship, the businesses have no relationship to each other. This, coupled with the fact that the specialties of the companies overlap, allows this whole operation to run smoothly. “[The building] really helps the customers,” continued Cherup. “When people call and I can’t help them, I can send them [Hippo Roofing’s] way. I’d rather send a client to someone who is reputable than someone I don’t know.” With her comments in mind, I began to understand the convenience of having one building out of which companies of different specialties can operate. If the roofing company you first go to can’t help, that’s okay! They can send you down the hall to somebody who can. Owning a home and making repairs is time consuming enough, this roofing center takes some of that stress off your back. It truly was remarkable to see that every member of the Hippo team, as well as every member of the other teams, all operate out of this building. From accounting and sales, to marketing and production, this building is packed full of specialists who can help you decide what’s best. Of course, the building wasn’t initially set up to host this wide variety of people. Stillwell shared with me that, upon moving in, the building was very “industrial.” So, he and his team had to spend over a month remodeling the interior. “We had walls to build, doors to find, layouts to do … all the things you have to do in order to make the building operational.” Hippo Roofing has also had to have equipment shipped from different parts of the country, which has required Stillwell to travel. Still, though the Hippo team has been working tirelessly on the new space, Hippo Roofing’s operations haven’t stopped. Clients will know that the team at Hippo Roofing has still been helping homeowners with their roofing needs. The center will have its grand opening in November around Veteran’s Day, an homage to the veteran-owned company. Until then, you can still count on Hippo Roofing to help you take care of your home.

You can find more information about Hippo Roofing at hipporoof.com. Call (321) 951-2500 for an estimate, and join them in November at 2774 N. Harbor City Blvd.

TRUST THE GARAGE EXPERTS BY ABBY McHENRY WRITER

H

aving a clean, functional home helps make the home more enjoyable. In general, garages do not seem to get the same attention that the rest of a home gets, yet they are equally important for storage purposes. Garages not only house cars but can also function as an extra storage unit for items that don’t have a place in main living areas. However, it is important to understand the difference between a garage and a storage unit. Yes, you can store excess furniture in your garage. But, if your garage can no longer house your vehicles, you may need to call an expert. Garage Experts of Brevard customizes your garage space to fit your individual needs, from flooring to storage space. Garage Experts is a national garage floor renovating company with a local branch in Brevard. According to Ryan Burke, owner of Garage Experts of Brevard, garages are often the last place people think of remodeling. The rest of the home comes first. “It’s a service that I think is important for customers that want a clean space [and] an extension of their living space,” Burke said. Our garages can become a place of stress and discomfort when they become filled with items with which we cannot part or for which we have no space. Because we don’t have basements in Florida, storage space is important, but we can’t let these spaces become too cluttered. Garage Experts can install cabinets to help you set your items aside and make way for your car. Burke said he spent many years in law enforcement and later was a director and consultant in retail. “I wanted to do something that I thought was a needed service in the community,” Burke said. Watching all the growth in Viera and the surrounding areas on the Space Coast convinced him that helping homeowners make better use of their garages was that needed service.

Since your garage is an extension of your home, it should receive the same amount of attention as your living space. “I’m excited about what I do because we’re able to take somebody’s dirty, dusty garage and transform it into something beautiful,” Burke said. He

shared that the company loves being able to provide a tangible service for its customers, and he enjoys interacting with them; it is important to him that customers are happy and get a quality product for a great price. Burke says the service is custom, and drawings are provided for customers so they can see how the space will look before any installation begins. According to Burke, one of the most popular services Garage Experts of Brevard provides is epoxy flooring. Epoxy floor coating is long-lasting and will “enhance the look of your garage, making it easy to clean, Burke said. The flooring is also used for patios, commercial, industrial and other residential spaces. If you are ready to be able to use your garage for its intended purpose, as well as to store items that have no place in your house, call Garage Experts of Brevard today for all your garage flooring and storing needs!

HOMEBUYING WITH U.S. BANK INFORMATION FOR THE FIRST-TIME HOMEBUYER BY SARA SANTORA MANAGING EDITOR

B

loans the money and the servicer handles the daily functions of the loan once closed.” He continued, sharing that, “[The] easy way to think of this is the servicer is who you make payments to or call with questions.”

I reached out to Scott Cronenberg, Mortgage Sales Manager with U.S. Bank, to discuss everything we thought potential homebuyers should know. Though the process is time-consuming – as buying a home is one of the biggest investments you can make – Cronenberg and his team can help ease your stress and make the process as painless as possible. Some might even find the process to be an enjoyable one.

In some cases, as is the case with U.S. Bank, your lender will also be your servicer. According to Cronenberg, having two in one is “a great benefit” because “you know where your payment will go and who to call in the event of a question or an issue.”

uying a home can be an intimidating process, especially for a first-time homebuyer. There is a lot to think about, from determining your budget to deciding on the right loan, and the process can feel both overwhelming and time-consuming.

To get started, I wanted Cronenberg to explain to me the difference between a mortgage lender and a mortgage servicer, as you’ll encounter both when buying a home. He simply explained that, “A lender 16 : S PAC E COA ST L IV IN G H O M E | S PAC ECOA ST L I V I NG.CO M

With this understanding of the difference between a lender and a servicer, the first step in buying a home would be finding your lender. Cronenberg reminded me that, when finding a lender, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” So, do your research, ask around and always get a second opinion. But, once you’ve found your lender, the next thing

you’ll want to do is sit down and discuss your options. Cronenberg shared that this first conversation you’ll have is a “fact finding discussion.” Essentially, the lender will want to know more about your financial picture, goals and comfort level with payments, among other financial topics. Of course, all of this information helps the lender better understand you, the borrower. Don’t feel uncomfortable when speaking with your lender, because the more information you give, the more easily he or she can help meet your homebuying needs. “Anyone can input information into a website or app and get options,” said Cronenberg. “[U.S. Bank] believes the only way to give true guidance is to fully understand the borrower and his or her financial picture. This only happens by having a discussion and asking questions.” The second thing I wanted Cronenberg to clarify was the difference between pre-approval and prequalification. The difference is pretty simple. “A pre-qualification is when you provide information to a mortgage loan officer to review,” said Cronenberg. “Based on a review of the credit and documentation provided, the mortgage loan officer will determine if the borrower is qualified. “A pre-approval is when a file is submitted to an underwriter for formal credit approval,” continued Cronenberg. According to Cronenberg, a pre-qualification can be completed in an hour or less, whereas a pre-approval takes a few days, as it is a more detailed process.

Buying a home comes with many costs. Apart from the mortgage itself, Cronenberg reminded me that a homebuyer has to think about down payment, closing costs (appraisal, credit report, taxes, title insurance fees, etc.) and pre-paid items (homeowner’s insurance and escrow items for taxes and insurance). Before beginning the homebuying process, have money set aside. Buying a home doesn’t have to be scary. The most important thing you can do is find a trustworthy professional to help guide you through the process. “U.S. Bank has consistently been named one of the world’s most ethical companies,” shared Cronenberg. “Our staff of seasoned mortgage professionals will always take the time to do what is right for our customers. We pride ourselves on building a relationship, not on completing transactions.”

PERFECTING PAINT

COLORING THE WORLD ONE HOME AT A TIME BY SUSANNAH BOWMAN WRITER

E

veryone is passionate about something. Luckily, if you’re looking into painting your home or business, the owners behind Perfecting Paint are passionate about painting. Founded in 2015 by brothers Jaz and Samuel Rodriguez, Perfecting Paint has always been about being the best they can be. In 2015, the brothers and roommates were brainstorming different ways to make a paycheck. Samuel Rodriguez had been in the painting business, and Jaz Rodriguez had experience in marketing and sales. They wanted to combine their talents and decided to take a leap of faith. They quit their jobs on Friday and opened up Perfecting Paint on Monday. When I sat down with Jaz Rodriguez, he said the business was really about one thing: “Above all, we want quality.” Perfecting Paint makes sure that the houses and businesses they paint are painted to perfection, an apt cause for its namesake. Perfecting Paint wants to “color the world.” There are multiple reasons why people decide to paint their homes. Rodriguez says that many of Perfecting Paint’s clients have their interiors painted to change

up the overall feel of a room. Many have their exteriors painted to increase their home value, to sell their home or to get positive attention from the neighbors. Either way, your house ends up looking and feeling better, and you’ll feel better, too. Home trends come and go, but we all want our homes to look like the covers of our favorite home magazines. According to Rodriguez, the most popular color for home interiors in this area is lilac gray. Lighter than your average gray, this color adds a bit of drama and genderneutrality to a room. For exterior paint, Rodriguez says that browns or grays are the way to go. Desert beige and stormy gray are the “it” colors for 2019. If you’re looking for a sophisticated and classic coastal feeling, the pair recommends stormy gray with white trim. This variety of gray is the perfect way to stand out in the neighborhood. If you’re looking for something a little more laid back, consider desert beige. According to the Rodriguez brothers, desert beige is great choice for the exterior because it rarely looks dirty. As desert beige and the dirt upon which your house stands are both brown, the color will last for years. They also recommend adding white trim along with the desert beige to keep your home looking cool and classic for years to come. Painting is a great way to change up your home and increase its value. If you want to avoid the messy spills and backbreaking labor of painting yourself, call Perfecting Paint. They promise perfection every time.

SAFETY FIRST:

WHY ROOF REPAIRS AND RENOVATIONS ARE ALWAYS IMPORTANT BY ABBY McHENRY WRITER

Y

ou’ve probably grown up hearing the saying “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” But, what about taking preventative measures? Floridians know better than anyone that preventative measures are often necessary; we apply sunscreen to our skin and spend months preparing for hurricanes that may never come. If you’re a homeowner, you should also consider taking preventative measures when it comes to the roof over your head. Many people wait until their roof is leaking to make any kind of change. However, roof repair and replacement can change the appearance of your home and provide safety you may not have realized you were missing. So, if you’re reading this and are thinking it may be time to get a new roof, G&G Roofing Inc. can be the team to help. Ray Smith, founder and owner of G&G Roofing, started the business with his wife, Kristy in 2002. “We took it, and we ran with it,” Smith said about his dream of starting a business. “We never quit running.” The company offers residential, commercial and industrial roof services. Smith said a typical roof is due for repair after 20 years, and warning signs can vary based on the weather a roof experiences. In Florida, we experience many thunderstorms, hurricanes and more recently, hailstorms. 2 0 : S PAC E COA ST L IV I N G H O M E | S PAC ECOA ST L I V ING.CO M

Leaks are an obvious warning sign that roof repairs are necessary and are the most common reason homeowners look into replacing a roof, though, the roof could have been updated years prior. In addition to leaks, there can be granule loss, rocks coming off shingle roofs and other signs of breakage. So, if you are encountering any of these problems, or think your roof is coming up on its lifespan, it’s time to call in an expert. Smith said when hiring a roofing company, you should check if they are licensed and insured, and should do general research to see what their reputation is. “Reputation is always best, especially today with the internet, social media, reviews, Angie’s List [and] Google,” Smith said. “There’s so much stuff on there.” Smith said prior to that you would just have to ask around from friends for recommendations. Now, you can do your own research and find your best fit. When talking about his company, Smith emphasized the importance of always doing the best job, and consistently providing quality service to customers. He says that for him, it is not about getting more business, but more about getting around to everyone while still providing a highquality service. Even though storms can lead to more

business, having a good reputation for providing a highquality service is even more important for Smith. “We were

Ray Smith and his children were featured on the cover of the June 2019 issue of Space Coast LIVING

who we were before the storm work came, and we will be who we are after the storm work as well,” Smith said about providing quality repairs and renovations with or without harsh weather seasons. Prior to hurricane season and other extreme weather catastrophes, Smith said people ask more questions about the company’s records and reputation, almost like an interview. He said they would ask things like “how long have you been in business, what are your warranties, do you have any references” etc. “You come in the storms and none of that matters,” Smith said. “It’s ‘How fast can you do it?’ ‘How soon can you get to it’?” When storms come around, for many customers, it becomes more about getting the job done as quickly as possible rather than checking on the company’s records and reputation. Keeping one’s family safe with a roof over their heads becomes priority number one. When asked about the hardest part of his job, he said, “There is no ‘hardest part,’ because I love what I do and wouldn’t change my job for anything.” “Good or bad, 10 times out of 10 we’ll always do what is right,” Smith said about why people should choose G&G. Smith said he has two families: the family that he goes home to and the family he works with.
