COV ER MODEL SEARCH FOR THIS YEAR’S COVER MODEL SHOOT, WE DECIDED TO GIVE OLD HOLLYWOOD A MODERN TWIST.
W
e were fortunate enough to have so many wonderful hands who helped us in every step of the process, and thanks to them, this shoot was a huge success. First, we’d like to thank La Moda Boutique for providing the clothing, and Swanky Sole for providing the shoes and accessories, all of which were worn by our models. You can’t do Hollywood glam without the proper wardrobe, right? We’d like to thank Sorelli Hair and Spa for creating the hair and makeup looks that transported our lovely ladies to a different era, as well as Cocoa Village Playhouse for providing such amazing props. We’d also like to thank Envoy Aviation for allowing us to shoot at their airstrip, as well as for providing the planes which served as part of our beautiful backdrop. And finally, we want to thank American Muscle Car Museum for providing their beautiful, antique cars, which were truly the cherry on top of a perfect shoot.

LUXURY AND LEGACY SHAPE CORAL REEF TRAVEL’S CUSTOM, FULL-ITINERARY SERVICE.
APRIL 2019
By Carrie Stevenson
W
hen Coral Reef Travel owner Amy Ziesel founded her agency in the Irish Catholic Wall Street community of Manhasset, New York in 1982, the world was a much different place. The process of travel planning has shifted enormously over the past 36 years, but what has remained constant and unchanging are the sense of excitement and wonder, the need for expertise and guidance, and the reality that even the best-laid plans often go awry. So when she recently relocated to Viera to care for her mother after her father passed away, Ziesel — a top producer in the luxury market —
brought along her passion and vast knowledge to the region. For Ziesel, designing an inspiring itinerary for clients by combining first-hand experience across a vast number of countries and cultures, with concierge-level service to please even the most discriminating palette — coupled with a seamless efficiency when hurricanes or snowstorms disrupt travel plans and alternative arrangements need to be made — are what life as a travel agent is all about.
“DISASTER PREPAREDNESS IS WHAT SETS APART PLANNING A TRIP ON YOUR OWN FROM WORKING WITH A TRAVEL AGENT,” SHE EXPLAINED. “IT’S NOT A NINE-TO-FIVE JOB.”

FROM THE EDITOR
FOR MOM e owe a lot to the women who raised us, don’t we? Whether they be our mothers, stepmothers, aunts, grandmothers, etc. we wouldn’t be who we are without their special love and guidance. This month’s issue, while filled with various content related to our breezy Florida spring, is dedicated to Mom. Many of these pages tell stories of mothers right here on the Space Coast, and they have been gracious enough to share, not only the love they have for their own children, but all of the lessons they learned from their mothers. As I share a close relationship with my mom, I am very excited that my first issue as Managing Editor is our Mother’s Day issue. My mom, much like the others found in this issue, is nurturing, selfless and inspiring. Without her constant love and support, I wouldn’t be who or where I am today. That in mind, I worked hard to capture the special love that only a mother can give, and I hope you enjoy spending time with this issue. I look forward to many more early mornings, community events and interviews for this publication. I am so excited to step into this new role within the community that raised me while thanking the women who raised all of us. Here’s to mom!

FASHION TRENDS
BOLD STYLE BY DANIELLE THOMAS
With the infamous Florida heat approaching, it’s important that we find a way to block the sun from our faces. Thankfully, we’re in luck this season. Like last summer, big hats are in again and just in time for the heat to start picking up and those UV rays to get much, much stronger. Just as other accessories, oversized hats can be added to almost any outfit and give it that extra “wow” look. Whether you are headed to the beach or to lunch with the girls, oversized hats will protect you from the sun while looking trendy, all at the same time. If you’re looking for a perfect oversized hat or beach wear for this spring and summer, you may want to head to the beach and visit the Salty Shack located in Indialantic on A1A for lots of fun beach looks for the season.

HAIR TRENDS
The summer months always spark women to make a change with their hair, whether that means a NEW STYLE, HAIRCUT or COLOR. If you are looking to revamp your do, let’s discuss a few of the colors, cuts and styles that will be big this summer.
THE PERFECT
Whatever color or style you choose to rock this summer, do it with confidence and know that you look great.
HAIRSTYLES FOR SUMMER Bangs The early ‘00s called, and they want their bangs back. No, really. Bangs are back, baby! The biggest difference between bangs from the early 2000s and the bangs of today is that longer bangs are in, and jagged, sideswept bangs are out. Does getting bangs sound scary? Understandable. But, longer bangs give you the ability to choose how 22 : SPAC ECOA ST L IV IN G
noticeable you want them to be on a day-to-day basis. Want to flaunt them one day? Perfect. Want to tuck them to the side? Completely fine. The best advice is to not let bangs define your face, but allow them to shape your face. Keep the length longer on the sides. This will give you the ability to style your hair in various ways and doesn’t restrict you to the same style every day.
BY DANIELLE THOMAS WRITER
High Ponytails You can never go wrong with a high ponytail. Whether it is worn with a casual outfit or a formal dress, a high pony is always stylish. High ponytails are a great style for women who need an easy hairdo to create when getting ready for work in the morning. It is a very neat and stylish option that draws more attention to the face rather than your hair (because we all have those days). Most important: the high ponytail is good for straight and curly hair. Whether you leave your hair in its natural condition or choose to straighten or curl your hair, the pony works with it all.
Messy Buns
Color
Let’s be honest, when has a messy bun not been popular? This option is a great choice going into the summer months when trying to avoid the heat while still looking stylish.
It’s time to talk color. It’s normal for women to go lighter with their hair color during the spring and summer months as opposed to darker colors during the winter. However, going from dark to light requires maintaining your color. Thankfully, it seems that we are in luck this season; the ombre look doesn’t appear to be going out of style anytime soon.
All face shapes and hair types can pull off the messy bun, and there are many ways to do it. The easiest way to complete the look is to pull all the hair back while keeping your normal hair part, and then shape it into an easy bun. Then, loosen the bun. Finally, pull some pieces out around your face to give it some shape. This is an easy option and you will be out the door in minutes.
The OMBRE LOOK is perfect for those who have naturally dark hair. To achieve this look, lighten the top of your hair and pull out even lighter colors as you work your way toward the bottom. Another color you may see celebrities rocking this season is the grey/purple look. This look is taking social media by storm and is ultimately putting a twist on the silver hair from last year. Achieve this look at the salon or at home.

INSTAGRAM MOTHERS
finding the right balance

INSTAGRAM MOMS TO FOLLOW BY SARA SANTORA MANAGING EDITOR Yoga is supposed to be relaxing, but it can often look scary. How are handstands relaxing? Are we sure we’re supposed to bend like that? If you’re a mother, the practice of yoga can be even more daunting. Shouldn’t yoga be practiced in a quiet room with the space to think and meditate? Like anything in life, it’s easy to build high expectations that keep us from doing the things we love, even if doing what we love means taking a few minutes out of our days to relax. In celebration of Mother’s Day, I’ve rounded up a small selection of Instagram accounts run by mothers who also happen to be yoga instructors. Your life may not look or feel as picture perfect as their accounts, but don’t let that deter you from trying to strike the right balance between time with your family and time with yourself. You deserve it!
KERRI VERNA @BEACHYOGAGIRL Another awesome mom of Instagram, Kerri Verna is a yoga and Pilates teacher and trainer who loves her kids, her dog and the beach. She posts amazing in-home tutorial videos, inspirational quotes and of course, photos of the beach. Another popular Viera brunch spot is Tradewinds at the Duran Golf Club in Viera. The restaurant serves plenty of traditional breakfast fare, with a menu that includes build-yourown omelets, pancakes, breakfast burritos, French toast and more. If you are looking for a simple, standard breakfast that is bound to please, Tradewinds is the place to go. Reservations are recommended due to high demand. The Space Coast has plenty of great brunch options outside of Viera as well. The Fat Snook, located in south Cocoa Beach, is a perfect spot for anyone who enjoys a flavorful beachside brunch. Offerings include scratch-made cheesecake, Nutellastuffed French toast, spiny lobster tacos, pumpkin cheddar grits, a Monte Cristo sandwich (served on a glazed donut), and Mexican street corn deviled eggs. These can be found at any major store such as Target or Walmart and can be ordered through online retailers such as Amazon. As many of us know too well, whether we make our own products or buy them, it can be easy for our storage areas to become cluttered. A A NEW HOME for an EXCLUSIVE brand
AUDI MELBOURNE
BY ERIC WRIGHT PUBLISHER
udi has become synonymous with beautiful design, intelligent, state-of-the-art technology and top-of-the-line performance since the 1930s. The four interlocking rings of their logo symbolize the company that was formed by the joining of four independent automobile manufacturers in Germany. It is a logo that is recognized and prized around the world. Here on the Space Coast, the demand for Audi SUVs, sedans and now the e-Tron line of electric automobiles continues to skyrocket. Their growing popularity inspired Audi Melbourne to relocate their dealership—which has been shared with Mercedes-Benz and Porsche Melbourne—to a new location at the intersection of U.S. Route 192 and Interstate 95. “This move has been in the works for over five years. The Audi business has grown so substantially that a new location was the best solution,” said Shay Rowe, the owner of all three dealerships. He cited that their sales have grown from around 80 per year to well over 500.
36 : S PAC ECOA ST L IV IN G
Explaining the brand’s popularity, he added, “Audi’s products have been so exceptional; therefore, sales have increased and, with it, the need for service.” The new location covers 46,000 square feet of showroom and service facilities with 16 service bays employing over 100 people on the seven-acre site.
New Location for New Innovation Gus Becce, the general manager of the new dealership commented, “This location will be very convenient for our Suntree-Viera and Vero Beach clients. In fact, it provides easy access for all our customers.” With nearly 12 years at Audi Melbourne, Becce is a true brand ambassador, stating, “Audi has made a name for itself by seamlessly combining technology, safety, convenience and performance.” According to Rowe, Audi began marketing towards a younger demographic almost ten years ago. Today, that foresight and investment is paying off, as those who imagined driving an Audi when they were starting their careers, have moved into the ranks of professionals. The first new e-Tron fully electric vehicles will be arriving at their showrooms this summer. Rowe described them as a “complete evolution in the automobile industry.” Car and Driver said Audi’s product and approach may meet and exceed early entries in the electric automobile market. “Although the e-Tron has cuttingedge technology, it exhibits exterior styling similar to its corporate siblings—Audi did this intentionally in order to make it more approachable to mainstream buyers,” the magazine reported. With greater range, quicker charging times and its parent company VW leading the charging station initiative in the U.S., the optimism is apparent. As Brevard becomes the aerospace and technology hub for Florida, it is not surprising that a brand whose historic slogan is, vorsprung durch technik, meaning “being ahead through technology,” is capturing attention, market share and now a new state-of-the-art home.

What inspired you to open the store? On the Model: The outfit is a design by Indah. Made in Bali, the fabric is hand painted by artisans. I chose this look because it’s great for Florida spring and summer. It is also a perfect outfit for beach and cruise vacations. It’s elegant, feminine and fun at the same time. It looks good on most body types. It can be worn with sandals to the pool or to dinner with heels. Very versatile.
I had been in the medical profession for 20 years and retired to be more involved in my daughter’s school and activities. When she graduated and went to college, I was left with time and energy to put into a new venture. I always loved fashion, and my Mom was a true fashionista. I found out that there was a local boutique for sale and decided to buy it!
What has your growth been like since you’ve opened? Since taking over the boutique in 2007, it has completely changed. I immediately added to the demographics of my customers. I brought in an additional 20 brands that had not been previously available and retired the ones that I didn’t like. We have been voted Space Coast Living’s Best Boutique several years!

What do you feel sets your store apart from others?
What’s your favorite part of owning a boutique?
Do you have a favorite brand you carry?
Divas’ shopping experience is as unique as the clothes it carries. We have a variety of styles and looks that make it easy to find clothing that will complement your body type and style. We understand that mature women want to be stylish yet age appropriate, as well as serving the younger women with the latest trends. We are honest with our customers about how an outfit looks, because the ultimate goal is to make them feel confident and beautiful when they walk into a room wearing a Divas outfit! Everyone who works at Divas are trained to be personal shoppers, available for suggestions and creative ideas. However, we are never pushy, because no one enjoys that experience.
One of my favorite benefits of owning Divas is the relationships I have developed with my employees. They are usually young women and very ambitious. Many times, it is their first job. I try to set an example for them worth following. Two of my past employees have been married at my home. They all have a special place in my heart. I'm very thankful for my loyal customers through the years. It’s especially heartwarming when daughters get old enough to shop with their moms. So many of my customers have been shopping with Divas for so long that we provided them with their homecoming dress, and now they are looking for a dress for their bridal shower or a dress for photos of their first pregnancy.
I hand pick every piece of clothing that I carry. Each brand has its own style, and the variety is what makes Divas so popular!
OUR TAG LINE IS “NOT RECOMMENDED FOR WOMEN WHO WISH TO GO UNNOTICED.” What are upcoming fashion trends for summer 2019? Animal prints and tie-dye are trending. You'll also see blazers and utility dressing. Bamboo purses and tortoiseshell earrings are high on the list for accessories. New trend for summer is the cycling short, although I’m not sure how I feel about that one!

omeone once said, “Always different, always new, always you, always ‘la moda!’”
Fashion, or la moda, is how so many of us express ourselves on a day-to-day basis. Between work, picking the kids up from school, going to the gym or going on a dinner date, our wardrobe can be a fun way to say “I mean business,” or “we should do this again sometime.” With so many places to be, and so many styles to choose from, shopping can be a fun, but often stressful, process. Thankfully, for those of us who live on the Space Coast, La Moda Boutique is here to provide the perfect outfit for every occasion. Family-owned and -operated by sisters-in-law Lisa and Dawn Vaccarelli, “La Moda Boutique has been bringing designer labels to the Space Coast for 19 years,” said Lisa Vaccarelli.

“EVERY WOMAN EVOLVES IN LIFE AND WE ARE CHANGING WITH HER TO FIND WHAT MAKES EACH WOMAN FEEL CONFIDENT AND POWERFUL FROM WITHIN." “Our philosophy is to create a relaxed environment to shop unique, casual and luxury designs, as well as sophisticated, contemporary and couture fashions that will feel effortless and timeless in your closet,” she continued.
“You will see longer tailored skirts and midi dresses incorporated with relaxed outerwear,” she said. You may have thought leopard prints had been exhausted, but they continue to steam ahead this year with most major designers.
La Moda offers a variety of popular high-end brands such as Capri Blue, Free People and Spanx. If you’re the woman who spends an obscene amount of time combing through fashion magazines or filling up online shopping carts, La Moda is the place to satiate your hunger for style. Does shopping with a glass of wine or champagne sound like the best way to shop? What about access to custom alterations? The Vaccarelli sisters certainly think so. Here, you can be pampered like the celebrity you’ve always wanted to be, and let’s be honest: you deserve it.
“Just returning from the New York Coterie show, we have discovered the reincarnation of chain jewelry,” continued Vaccarelli. “It has been brought back from the 80s by Chanel and has set the trend for this spring and summer.”
Lisa Vaccarelli said the family has been deeply involved in the wholesale fashion industry for over 30 years. Because of this, she promises that La Moda is “always on point and a step ahead, finding your next favorite piece from across the world.”

hough the downtown area may appear small, this festival was a huge hit. Over 50 restaurants participated and over 100 different drink options were sampled.

Participating restaurants included Crush Eleven, The Mansion, Backwater—among many other local favorites—and the winners of the night’s best bite was Crydermans Barbecue. All night, community members wined, dined and danced. Full of Soul
BREVARD’S NEIGHBORHOOD BOUTIQUES OFFER STYLE, SELECTION AND SENSE OF COMMUNITY
N
early five years ago, Brevard’s only true “shoe boutique” was born with the opening of Swanky Sole in downtown Melbourne, which then moved to Suntree three years ago. Owner Dawn Badolato saw a need in the area for a shop that offered a great collection of high-quality and unique shoes, handbags, and accessories. “We pride ourselves on carrying great brands at varying price points that aren’t being sold anywhere else in the county,” she explains. “As a busy working mother, I know there’s no time to drive around looking for the right pair of shoes. And I found it virtually impossible to shop for shoes online.” So, Badolato spent six months researching brands and boutique settings, along with developing a collection both fashionable and comfortable. “I wanted to support that dressy casual vibe so unique to Florida girls,” she explains. 52 : SPAC ECOA ST L IV IN G
That vibe extended beachside about 18 months ago when Badolato decided to acquire an existing women’s clothing boutique in Indialantic and christen it Sandy Soul. “We did a quick remodel, giving it more of our swagger, changed up a few of its clothing lines, and off we went,” she explains. “I love the idea of a head-to-toe ‘one stop shop,’ so we created it.” Badolato travels a great deal for both boutiques to research trending and unique fashions in the marketplace, including in New York, Las Vegas and Atlanta. Swanky Sole and Sandy Soul provide clothes and shoes for real life, says Badolato, and the lines and pieces are tailored to suit a gap in the market that she noticed – a group of women not being spoken to. “There’s the idea of being ‘ontrend’ but not really trendy,” she explains. “We carry clothing and shoes for everyday living, but can
comfortably move into special events as well. This approach has served us well in that our customers find real value in what we bring to the table. Our stylists in both stores always come with plenty of product knowledge to help our customers try things they may find outside of their comfort zone.” Emerging trends that Badolato sees for the summer through the fall include lots of yellow, animal prints (especially snake!), and plenty of vintage patterns. Block heels, pointed toes, and the classic blazer round things out. Badolato’s favorites at Swanky Sole include originals like Fly London, as well as MZ Wallace handbags out of New York. At Sandy Soul, Jude Connally and Sundays NY vie for the top spot, as both offer easy-care fabrics and a casually elegant look. And up-and-coming lines Lauren Moshi and Eva Franco are flying off the shelves.

CELEBRATING MOM
M
otherhood is easily one of the most underrated professions out there. Being a mom is a nonstop job, and when you add school, volunteerism and a nine-to-five job to the mix like these ladies do, life can go from somewhat manageable to chaotic. However, moms are no ordinary humans, and they have somehow mastered the art of cramming 800 hours’ worth of work into a 24-hour day. With this heavy workload, they also find time to love, mentor and protect their children and families, making them real-life superheroes. So, here’s to mom, may we not stress her out, if only for just today.

Jordan Walton Mother of Ayden, 7; Ryder, 5; and Fynn, 3 Full-time student at the Academy of Cosmetology
usy” doesn’t even begin to describe a day in the life of Jordan Walton. As a full-time mother and a full-time student, her days start at 6 a.m. and end sometime in the early-to-late evening. Along with being in school, “all three boys are currently enrolled in soccer, so each day I get home, get them a light snack, complete any homework assigned, go to soccer, come home, eat and get ready for bed, just to wake up and start the whole cycle all over again. But I would not change it for the world.” Though her days may sound hectic, she enjoys every second, as motherhood has been something she has been looking forward to ever since she was a little girl. “Having three little boys running around my house has been a dream—noisy, hilarious, heartwarming and more fun than I could have ever imagined.” Though she has always dreamed of becoming a mother, she never anticipated just how much her heart would grow to love all her children. Being a mother of three boys, she hopes they learn the importance of being gentlemen. “As a kid, my mother used to always say ‘don’t sit in glass houses and throw rocks because you never really know what’s happening in another person’s life.’ I would instill the same principal that my mother taught me regarding not sitting in a glass tower and throwing rocks, but I want to raise my boys not to just be men, but to also be gentlemen. “Being gentlemen is still worth the effort,” Walton continued. “Take responsibility. Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable. Actually being a man is more important than talking like one.”

other, salon owner and lifelong Space Coast resident, Tiffany Rosenfield is happy that she can raise her two boys in the town where she grew up and made so many wonderful memories. “I love capturing pictures of them that my parents captured of me in the exact same spots. I truly enjoy how small of a town it is and everyone being familiar with everyone. I love saying hi to the moms and dads I went to school with when walking through my child’s school.” She also adds that living in close proximity to the beach is the added bonus to living on the Space Coast with her “energetic boys!” As a salon owner, she is on call seven days a week, meaning it can be easy for her to fall into a stressful routine. However, she shares that being a mother gives her opportunities to enjoy little things that can be so easily missed. “Honestly, one of the best parts of being a mother is the genuine laughter and smiles that they give me daily, which in everyday life of work and routines tend to be forgotten.” “I live for seeing them grow into great human beings and watching all of their accomplishments, no matter how big or small!” Of course, while she’s thankful for the life she lives, she shares that being a working mother comes with “mommy guilt.”

As being a mom is its own job, having to balance between her role as a mother and her role as a salon owner can be difficult, but she reminds all mothers that “we are doing amazing” and not to be too tough on themselves. For Rosenfield, being a mother has a lot to do with teaching and shaping the future. “I am teaching them to take on our society with knowledge and respect, while also teaching them the skills to cope and educate others on making the world a better place.” She adds, “The most important part of being a mom is teaching and showing [my kids] how to love and care for one another.”

Millie Concepcion Badolato Mother of Elizabeth, 18; and Lensa, 14 Volunteer at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy
Millie Concepcion Badolato is nothing short of passionate. She and her husband moved to the Space Coast in 2003 so that he—a sports medicine physician—could start his own private practice. She has worked as his practice manager ever since this move, but quickly added volunteering into her already busy schedule. “There are many special non-profit organizations that I participate in here in Brevard County, but the one that makes me feel most proud is being a volunteer at my daughters’ school, Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy.” Here, she has served as a kindergarten aid, art docent, classroom mom, band booster, fieldtrip chaperone, and so much more. She shared that she and her husband chose Holy Trinity for their girls “not just because of the challenging curriculum and engaged teachers, but also because of the core Christian foundation that helps young people develop strong character, values and leadership.” For her, it’s important that her daughters be reminded to be “faithful stewards of the world,” and hopes they grow to be well-rounded individuals.
Badolato shared that she has been highly inspired by her godmother, her aunt, her mother-in-law, and of course, her own mother. All of these women had some influence on Badolato, whether it be through their work ethic, kindness and activism. However, her generosity, love and service-oriented attitude come from her mother, who would ask her daughters this: “What footprint are you going to leave in this world? How do you want to be remembered? Then this is how you live your life. The rest are material things and have no value.”
Being highly involved in the lives of her children is a top priority for Badolato. “I've never heard any parent who volunteers at their children’s school say they regretted it. It’s worth every second you can take off work to be there for your children.”
This in mind, Badolato hopes that her daughters learn to, not only praise God and be thankful to Him through the good times and the bad, but to also “find their passion in life and live it in a way that they, too will leave their footprint.” MAY 2019 : 59

However, when we started talking about having kids, we knew it was time to move back to beautiful Brevard County.” Parkerson and her husband homeschool their children, and she volunteers with her homeschool community and with her church. For her, being involved in the lives of her children is a top priority. “Being a mother means being available to my children and loving them well. It means nurturing my boys in a way that will help them develop their God-given talents so that they can use them effectively when they reach adulthood.” Parkerson shared that she learned this selflessness from her mother. Her mother was and always is available, and she hopes that her boys will not only say the same thing about her, but also do the same for their families. Along with this selflessness, Parkerson hopes that her boys will learn to follow and be like Jesus. “I enjoy spending time talking with my boys and watching them grow and develop into kind, compassionate young men.”

Debbie Thomas Mother of Josh, 32; Matt, 23; and Danielle, 21 Vice Mayor for the City of Melbourne
In 2014, Debbie Thomas was elected to be the Vice Mayor for the City of Melbourne. A long time Brevard county resident, it makes sense that someone with such a love for and connection to the Space Coast would be elected to serve it. Of course, while Thomas loves her profession, she loves her family even more: “Being a mother has been the best thing to happen to me.” Though she has an entire community to serve, her children are at the center of everything she does. “When you become a mother, you go from being selfish to selfless in a way, and I think every mother can agree that you would do anything for your kids.” Even when taking on her profession four years ago, she learned not only to not fear failure, but to push past it, both for herself and for her children. “I wanted to prove to my kids that they could do whatever they wanted as long as they believe in themselves.” Thomas has enjoyed raising her children on the Space Coast and has loved every second of watching her kids grow into successful adults. “It really is the best feeling watching your kids be successful and happy after all the years spent trying to teach them and shape them into the people they have become.” And what has Thomas taught her children? Well, it’s twofold. Like her mother, she has learned and passed on the idea that, as life is so short, we must cherish every moment. The other has been to live life through kindness. “I want [my children] to appreciate life and its moments, and only spread happiness to themselves and the people around them.”

A family-friendly guide to the Space Coast by mom, for mom.
A
s a mom, I love living here in Brevard County. Having grown up in a cold, northern climate, I appreciate now being able to enjoy the “endless summer” here with my kids. There’s always something to do! Our family has lived in Merritt Island for nearly nine years, which means I’ve watched as my sons’ interests have morphed from toddler activities to middle school adventures. Through it all, we’ve found plenty of ways to spend time together and enjoy the Space Coast to its fullest.

The Wonderful Water Since my boys are basically part fish, our favorite activities usually involve some form of water. The oceans, rivers, splash pads and swimming pools in our area allow us to be active while still staying cool. Kayaking tops our entertainment list, especially when the dolphins and manatees come out to play. Though we typically paddle our own, Calema offers affordable kayak rentals out of Kelly Park. If surfing or boogie boarding is on the agenda, we often choose Cherie Down Beach for its smooth surf or Pineda Beach for the best rinse-off showers around. The splash pad in Taylor Park is simple, free fun for my little ones, while their older brothers prefer to toss a football in the nearby fields. And even though our pool at home gets used almost daily, the Aquatic Center in Cocoa Beach is a fun change of pace with its slide, diving board and fountain.

The Playful Parks The fantastic park system in Brevard County provides a never-ending supply of outdoor fun for our family. Merritt Island’s Rotary Park is a great place for playing soccer and climbing trees, and the scavenger hunt available in the nature center is an added bonus.
For an afternoon outing, we sometimes like to take advantage of the paved trails at Chain of Lakes Park in Titusville for a family bike ride. My kids consider the gators along the banks a real thrill, and the views from the observation tower can’t be beat. We also like to picnic at Kiwanis Park along Sykes Creek, where the playground is shady and the breeze blows freely across the water. And a hike through the Enchanted Forest in Titusville is an awesome choice for cooler days.
3
The Indoor Interest
While most days here in Florida lend themselves to being outside, rain or heat can send us on the hunt for inside entertainment. My boys are big readers, so the local library is by far one of our favorite places, not only for the books, but also for the scheduled activities. We’re at the library so often, I think they’re going to start charging us rent! Cocoa Village is also awesome with its art studios and community theater, though some significant
The Tourist Traditions Even though we live here, we like to pretend we’re on vacation sometimes. Recently we visited Cocoa Beach Aerial Adventures, an amazing ropes course with levels of increasing difficulty (and height!) that challenged everyone. Then, in true vacation mode, we went out for ice cream afterwards at Twistee Treat. Another favorite is the Brevard Zoo, a popular spot with tourists and residents alike — and for good reason! Where else can you interact with kangaroos, pet alpacas, observe meerkats, ride a train, pretend to be a vet, and feed stingrays or giraffes? The zoo was actually my twins’ first outing as babies, so it will always hold a special spot in our hearts. We also love to visit Kennedy Space Center during discounted entry days or explore Port Canaveral either on foot or by boat. Finally, nothing says vacation like mini golf, and we think Gator Golf in Cocoa Beach is one of the best around.

preplanning is required, obviously. Shore Lanes bowling alley has great summer deals for kids, so that’s often our foul weather go-to. The Space Coast Iceplex gives us just a taste of winter year-round and allows the boys to participate in a skill I used regularly as a northern kid — ice skating. And, of course, my boys love going to Sky Zone in Rockledge, where they offer a variety of trampolines and ninja courses designed for all ages.

I love raising my boys here on the Space Coast, where the re are plenty of ways to make memories togeth er as a family. Every activity has the potentia l to become a new favorite when we get to do it together!

MAKING A
VISIBLE DIFFERENCE VALDERRAMA ORTHODONTICS
"I always saw dentistry as a part of a more holistic view of healthcare."
BY ERIC WRIGHT PUBLISHER
W
hen we search for healthcare providers, there are two qualities that engender trust. The kind of trust that provides peace of mind in the moment and confidence in the future. Between medical professionals and their patients, it is based on their doctor’s ability; are they qualified? And their empathy; do they really care?
It would be difficult to determine which quality is stronger in Dr. Natalia Valderrama, of Valderrama Orthodontics in Melbourne. How many graduate from medical school in dentistry at just 18? Not one in a million people, but perhaps one in a million doctors. Then, she became a celebrated and innovative provider of oral health and treatment, in the poorest and most remote parts
of her native Columbia, often traveling by horseback to treat villages in rural areas. Looking back on what drew her towards dentistry she said, “I loved science and was fascinated with how the human body operated." This, along with the influence of her mother, a biology professor; her father, a philosopher and a MAY 2019 : 71
philanthropist; and her own orthodontist, who gave her a transformative experience when she was a teenager and encouraged her focus on her profession. “I had such a wonderful experience with an orthodontist and saw what a difference they could make in a life. I prayed that one day I would be able to have that kind of impact on others.”
Coming to America Already a successful and experienced dentist with her own practice, at 25 she came to America on vacation and was captivated by how clean, modern and safe it was. “I loved the country and three days after my arrival, I decided this is where I wanted to live,” Dr. Valderrama said. Though eminent in her native country, like many immigrants before her, she had to divert to a slightly different track to help her achieve American citizenship and an ability to practice dentistry. She chose to become a registered nurse. “Part of the reason I did that is was I wanted to understand how the larger healthcare system in America worked,” she explained. “By becoming a nurse, I served in hospitals in the ER, labor and delivery and intensive care; my goal was to become a better overall clinician. I always saw dentistry as a part of a more holistic view of healthcare.” She then went through a special international advanced program in general dentistry at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health at the University of Rochester. Having finished that program, she continued on to complete a specialty in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. Orthodontists, in addition to completing their general dentistry training, spend two to three years specializing in the diagnosis, prevention and correction of misaligned teeth and jaws, including overbites, occlusions and overcrowded mouths.
The Difference Experience Makes Pic 1. Dr. V consulting with a patient different options, traditional or clear, lingual braces or clear aligners. Pic 2. With latest scanning technology, her patients do not have to take impressions and molds any longer, since everything is done via the internet.

“I wanted to be in a place where I could help people and I realized that in dentistry I have the power to change people’s lives,” Dr. Valderrama said. “That is why we offer free consultations; because part of my mission is to use my knowledge and experience for the betterment of others.”
One of the critical differentiators she identified, being initially trained and practicing in a poorer country, was that the focus of healthcare in these countries is on prevention, rather than curing people once they are sick. Early detection and intervention are foundational to their approach. From a quality of life, as well as the practicality of pure economics, the benefits are obvious. “If you can detect and intervene early, it has a huge impact,” she observed. In addition, Dr. Valderrama is proactive in taking the initiative to refer patients to other medical specialists. “The longer you wait to treat a problem, the worse the problem has the potential to become. A simple referral to an ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat specialist) speech therapist or a general dentist can make a remarkable difference.” Dr. Valderrama, is also committed to collaboration and with digital technologies at her disposal she is able to consult with specialists and clinicians from around the world.
Changing Face of Orthodontics “My practice covers both sides of the age spectrum,” she said. “For the young, we focus on early diagnosis and treatment, but I also have patients as old as 82.” The explanation is simple: she is seeing and treating people who have been suffering the effects of poor alignment all their lives.
HEALTH ALERT
Consultations include a digital photo and radiographic analysis as well as an oro-facial, respiratory and dental assessment of the patient.
Thus, they have gum problems because they can’t floss properly, or their teeth are wearing incorrectly. Now with life expectancies increasing with each generation, what was once considered old, is now seen almost as middle age. Thus, orthodontic care becomes a healthy, quality of life and lifestyle option. The case for having straight teeth isn’t simply a cosmetic issue, rather it helps ensure your teeth last longer and your overall health is improved. Therefore, if you are expecting to live to 100 or 110, then orthodontic care in your 50’s and 60’s makes perfect sense. “These individuals have the potential to be able to keep their teeth for an additional 40 or 50 years,” she said.
DR. ADVICE When it comes to dental care Dr. Valderrama advises: 1. Keep it simple, the latest sophisticated technologies aren’t as important as the good general hygiene techniques of brushing and flossing. 2. Don’t leave children alone to brush their teeth; watch them and instruct them in how to brush effectively. 3. Build a relationship with your dentist and be sure to schedule regular checkups and cleanings every 3-6 months. 4. If your child manifests symptoms like snoring or grinding their teeth do not ignore your concerns or assume they will outgrow it; make inquiries and use the digital tools at your disposal to get answers.
According to the American Association of Orthodontics, children should see an Orthodontist for an exam before they are 7 years old. Dr. Valderrama offers complimentary consultations at her practice: Valderrama Orthodontics in Suntree/ Viera. MAY 2019 : 73

WHY SO DRY?
EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS FOR DRY EYE BY ERIC WRIGHT PUBLISHER

or some it is a constant irritation, for others it is so debilitating they cannot open their eyes. The America Academy of Ophthalmology (www.aao.org) calls it "one of the most common ocular complaints in the United States" and estimates that nearly 5 million Americans 50 and older have the condition described as moderate to severe dry eye. They also pointed out that "tens of millions more are affected by milder symptoms that occur periodically when triggered by an adverse event or environmental agents."

The LipiFlow procedure takes about 12 minutes for each eye and can be performed the same day as the patient’s initial evaluation.
Fortunately, our understanding of dry eye disorders has improved dramatically, along with an enhanced ability to diagnose and treat the condition. The two predominant forms of dry eye are described as "aqueous-deficient" and "lipid-deficient," said Dr. Rafael Trespalacios of Brevard Eye Center. "Aqueous-deficient dry eye occurs when the lacrimal glands do not generate enough (water) to keep the eyes sufficiently moist," Dr. Tres explained. "Lipid-deficient dry eye, also known as evaporative dry eye, occurs when the water evaporates at a faster rate than normal due to an inadequate protective lipid (oil) layer on the surface of the tear film. Evaporative dry eye is the most prevalent type, affecting up to 86 percent of dry eye sufferers." Dr. Tres was the first in Brevard, and one of the first in the U.S., to offer a revolutionary new treatment for evaporative dry eye disorder – a simple process that can be performed right in his office. The groundbreaking procedure - The LipiFlow Thermal Pulsation System from TearScience , a Division of Johnson and Johnson, is a significant technological shift in evaporative dry eye treatment, effectively relieving blockage of
the eyelid (Meibomian) glands. The procedure takes about 12 minutes for each eye and can be performed the same day as the patient’s initial evaluation. In a clinical study, 76 percent of patients reported improvement of their symptoms within two weeks. At the heart of the LipiFlow is the activator (a cup-like eyepiece). The activator uses patented, precisely controlled heat applied to the inner eyelid with adaptive pressure encouraging the body to resume the natural production of oils needed for the tear film. Its singleuse design and built-in sensors ensure a safe, sterile treatment. ®

SUNSCREEN FOR SUN BLOCK:
HOW TO REDUCE THE SIGNS OF AGING
What if there really was a miracle product to reduce the signs of aging? What if I told you almost everybody has access to it right now? What if I told you the answer was
sunscreen? BY DR. ANITA SALUJA, DERMATOLOGIST & JACLYN BOUNAUITO
T
he sun is responsible for over 90 percent of skin aging and for most skin cancer. Its ultraviolet rays penetrate the skin cells’ DNA, causing unwanted changes in the skin's foundation, which can potentially lead to cancer. The rays also break down the skin's fibrous elastin, which is responsible for that plump, healthy skin look. Skin appears aged when it starts to show signs of laxity, dehydration, wrinkles, lines and dark spots. Want to avoid this aging? Protect your skin daily with sunscreen. Because the sun is so damaging, it’s important to choose a sunscreen that can be easily integrated into your daily skincare and beauty routine. To do this, let's decide between a sunblock and a sunscreen. Though these terms are used interchangeably, they are quite different. SUNBLOCK: Known as physical sunscreen — bounces the sun's rays off like a mirror. Our go-to
76 : SPAC ECOA ST L IV IN G
sunblock at Dermatology + Plastic Surgery is Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush-on Shield SPF 50 by Colorescience. It gives an all mineral physical protection in a simple to apply brush-on applicator. It is great for the active Florida lifestyle and easy to use on the go. SUNSCREEN: Often called chemical sunscreen — absorbs the sun's rays. My favorite pick is Isdin Eryfotona Actinica Ultralight Emulsion SPF 50 because it’s unique — containing DNA Repairsomes, decreasing the risk of cancer over time. Our men and oily skinned patients love this product, too, because of its ultralight nature.
Now, let’s decide what works best for each of us. Physical sunscreen is a good choice for those with sensitive skin, while chemical sunscreen is best for a more elegant application. Thankfully, sun protection products have come a long way in terms of application. No matter which product you choose, expect beautiful textures, mattifying effects, and formulas that can increase hydration. Sunscreen should be the last step in your skin care routine every single day. Some physical protectants can even act like a face primer, as they lay on top of the skin, giving a smooth canvas for makeup application.
Sunblocks and sunscreens are both effective forms of sun protection. The American Academy of Dermatology advises that either formulation is approved as long as it protects against UVA and UVB rays (broad spectrum), has a minimum 30 SPF (sun protection factor), and is water resistant. The key is to find the sunscreen that is right for you, reapply and stick with it.
A special piece of advice to strengthen the battle against the sun’s damaging rays is adding an antioxidant product to your daily facial routine. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals that cause havoc in the skin and helps your skin's natural defenses become stronger. My favorite is Total Defense and Repair Broad Spectrum Sunscreen by SkinMedica. As a bonus, TD+R lightens, brightens and tightens the skin. I call it liquid gold!
STOCK UP ON ACCESSORIES My final tip is giving you the green light to shop and stock up on accessories. Express your personal style with sunglasses, hats, cover ups and umbrellas. Physically keep your skin covered and stay in the shade when you are outside this summer. Fashionable and smart!
Stay hydrated!
Umbrellas offer great shade and keep you safe!

Maintaining the Momentum Partnering for Economic Growth By Eric Wright The Space Coast was built on a goal that was so far reaching, it was beyond the capability of the government or any specific industry to realize, much like our vast interstate highway or port and airport system. America’s space program needed not only the capital, but the intellectual might and the technical/industrial resources of the entire nation to accomplish this monumental human achievement. It was a partnership between the people, the government and private industry. These types of partnerships continue to define how we advance America’s frontiers in the 21st century, not only in exploration, as we see with SpaceX or Blue Origin, but the challenges of economic growth. Fifty years ago, automobile manufacturing was centered in the industrial Midwest, particularly Michigan and Ohio. Today, Honda, Hyundai and Mercedes vehicles are built in Alabama, Kias in Georgia, Fords and Cadillacs in Tennessee and Lincolns and Toyotas in Kentucky. In addition, consider all the ancillary businesses that feed off these industrial juggernauts, by supplying parts, logistics and fabrication. The efforts to attract, retain and grow major industries of this magnitude
require an unprecedented level of cooperation between state and local government and private industry. The current surge of activity in the aerospace is no exception. It will no more happen by chance, than the idea that we would have made it to the moon or even into space, simply because it was beckoning to us. Even the successes of modern space entrepreneurs are predicated on a space infrastructure that was built as a public/private partnership.
STAYING ON TARGET
Joe Mayer, of Lockheed Martin and chair-elect of the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast
Many Brevard residents do not realize how unique our county economy is, nor are they aware of how that partnership has facilitated our resurgence. Unlike other regions that are service oriented, the Space Coast has a robust manufacturing and technology-based economy
which commands higher salaries and benefits. Underscoring our unique, but precarious position, Joe Mayer, of Lockheed Martin and chair-elect of the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast, observed that most people do not realize where we came from. The county was facing job losses that could have approached 20,000 with the retirement of the Space Shuttle. Mayer said, “The EDC was so incredibly successful, that today, unemployment is now at historic lows. Because of that, some question the need for the EDC. To think these large companies, which continue to relocate here, will do so just because we have nice beaches, lots of sunshine and affordable housing is a pipe dream.” Speaking from firsthand experience, though Mayer was not directly involved, his company recently chose to move close to 300 jobs to Brevard from Sunnyvale, CA as a part of their support of the Navy’s fleet ballistic missile program. Lockheed’s footprint in the area, which also includes fabrication of the Orion deep space exploration capsule and the Astrotech Space Operations subsidiary in Titusville, has a local workforce in the range of 1400.

Mayer came to this area after spending 16 years in Houston, working first for Boeing, then for Lockheed Martin in external affairs and government relations. While there, he was introduced to the Bay Area Houston Economic Pa r t n e r s h ip ( BA H E P ) a n d recognized how critical they were to the aerospace industry that had grown up around Johnson Space Center. “When I came to Florida, we had been long standing members of the EDC, but because of my experience with BAHEP, I would have sought them out anyway,” he said. After meeting Lynda Weatherman and the EDC team, Mayer felt he had struck gold. “Lynda’s strategic and tactical skills, at both seeing the overarching issues, combined with knowing how to direct efforts to achieve our goals is almost without parallel. I was all in,” he said.
THE X FACTOR WORKFORCE One of the major shifts our EDC has made is to raise awareness of the mounting need for talent across the job spectrum. One could almost say that economic development and workforce development have, in some ways, become synonymous. Working with CareerSource Brevard, significant headway has been made particularly in the area of manufacturing. Brevard boasts over 500 manufacturing companies in aviation, aerospace, medical equipment, communications, transportation and others. Not
SPACE COAST B US INE S S
only is demand high, as 55 percent of the people in this sector are 45 years or older, job stability ranks second and the wages are 21 percent higher than the average in the U.S. To address this need, the EDC has launched efforts under what it calls, “Seeing Manufacturing Through New Eyes.” It is designed to develop a new paradigm of what manufacturing careers can be like for both young people and the parents who help guide them, particularly making them aware that most modern manufacturing jobs are STEM related. Part of this is the Certified Production Technician Training Program (CPT), which is a ten-week course to prepare people for entry into the manufacturing arena. Once they are placed, they are introduced to stackable industry certifications, which allow upward advancement. “A l m o s t org an i c a l ly, t h e s e individuals are coming back to us about individual training they want to complete that is geared to where they want to specialize,” Weatherman said. Adding that 87 percent of the individuals who have completed CPT have been placed in jobs.
A UNIFIED BRAND In t he comp et it ion on t he professional side for engineers, computer scientists and the like, Brevard is going up against communities such as Nashville, Austin, Atlanta or Southern California. “What we need is a kind of comprehensive, ubiquitous, universal brand placement, so
that when people think about us, there is an emotional identification with what our area is all about,” Weatherman said. The larger companies that make up the local economy, Harris, Northrop Grumman, Collins, Embraer etc., are recruiting to their organization for a particular job. According to Weatherman, those efforts must be matched by all the organizations within the community and the state of Florida itself, to say, “You should come to this area to build your career because we are the home for 21st century technology.” In conjunction with the Tourist Development Commission, a modest campaign has been launched called “Live Big” with the tag line, “Better Gigs, Sunny Digs.” The idea is to inspire a brand that links great lifestyle opportunities with remarkable, cutting edge career opportunities. This is the essence of what Brevard county offers. A place that is large enough in the advancement of new and cutting-edge careers and large enough to have the kind of amenities everyone looks for. Yet it is of a size where involvement and meaningful engagement are limited only by your willingness. All because of a commitment to a public/private partnership that has spanned decades. Much of what they do relies on technology. “We see technological advances having a big impact on the way we recruit and the way that we’re able to serve our members,” says Gardner. Passion and advancement are major influencers for the members of Christian Care Ministries. They look for people who are spiritually minded and have spiritual gifts. When prospective employees want to apply those gifts to their work, they show their alignment with the mission of the organization and their drive to help. The Brevard area has and utilizes great community resources
due to their location on the Space Coast, which greatly helps them to attract high-quality, spiritually-minded talent. Christian Care Ministries has been helping around the community to make great impacts as well. The organization has a formal volunteerism program where they give their employees three paid days off each year to serve the community by volunteering in local organizations. Many of their employees volunteer at partnership organizations that work with local churches, family centers, literacy programs, environmental organizations, and children’s issues.

Popular job-search site, Indeed, even classified Northrop Grumman as the toprated work place for Millennials, showing their continuous acquisition of bright leaders of the future. With their location in Brevard since 1987, they are able to utilize all of their capabilities in a common location, increasing their collaboration and the utilization of complementary skills. In the past 5 years, Northrop Grumman has grown from 1,200 to nearly 5,000 workers in Brevard. This surge drives home building, school enrollment, the need for teachers and doctors and a multitude of factors that drive the economic progress in our area. Florida’s business climate is a key for the operation and expansion capabilities of this organization. “The caliber of schools, economic development organizations, community offerings, and our beaches – the Space Coast is a great place to work, live and play,” says Jeransky.

GROWING COMMERCIAL SPACE RUAG SPACE USA
By Matt Weinstein RUAG is a Swiss-owned technology company headquartered in Bern, Switzerland. The company focuses on the aerospace and defense business, with goods and services in both the military and civilian sectors, along with the development of international growth markets. The RUAG Space division was founded in 2009 through acquisitions of like-minded entities and RUAG international growth efforts. The organization operates internationally with production sites in Switzerland, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Austria and the United States. The rapidly growing RUAG Space division elected to create a business sector in the Titusville area to support the OneWeb satellite program. OneWeb is a company working to put a 600plus satellite constellation into space, currently being built out through the 2020’s. Once in place, it is intended to provide Internet broadband services anywhere in the world, much like GPS. On the Space Coast, RUAG Space is tasked with the construction of the thermal panel structures for the assembly of OneWeb satellites. These satellites include five panels, to which the component parts of the satellite are attached. RUAG’s processes, along with the OneWeb program, have been able to produce two satellites each day out of their north Brevard production line. And if that’s not enough, RUAG and OneWeb are in the final stages of a ramp-up in their production. RUAG chose to expand to the U.S. market due to the saturation and plateau of their previous European operations. “With the presence of the commercial space business taking off, there are greater opportunities on the Space Coast,” says Mark Sutton. Sutton is the Plant Manager of RUAG Titusville operations. Sutton went on to stress the plethora of opportunities to collaborate with other aerospace organizations in the area to help support their satellite programs.
SPACE COAST B US INE S S
Currently, OneWeb is the only customer that RUAG is working with. Although their plates are full, they are hungry for more!
ATTRACTING AND BUILDING A WORKFORCE FOR THE FUTURE
As their opportunities and offerings continue to expand, RUAG is working to bring in the brightest talents from the Florida area. RUAG is a member of the Space Coast Consortium Apprenticeship Program, which is a group of nine aerospace companies in the local area where Sutton serves as a Committee Secretary. This committee helps to implement and manage a 2-year apprenticeship program that contributes to the talent pipeline workforce. This apprenticeship program is heavily involved with Eastern Florida State College to offer real world experience and training to students looking to enter the aerospace field. The program offers 3 apprenticeship opportunities: Mechatronics (the combination of mechanical engineering and electronics engineering), Advanced CMC Machining and Fiber Composites.
Mark Sutton, Plant Manager RUAG Titusville
“We’re bringing a name brand company to the Space Coast in order to create growth opportunities and support the
commercial space business,” said Sutton. Currently, there are 31 apprenticeships between the companies involved in the consortium. Sutton discussed how these training programs will start this coming fall, where students will work 3 days at one of the consortium companies, 1 day in the classroom, and 1 day at the lab of their college. The goal is to give students on the job training along with their educational instruction. Upon the completion of their apprenticeship programs, students are eligible to receive an Associate Degree or a certification of their experience that is recognized worldwide. These opportunities will continue to expand as the consortium companies look to draw students from other locations for their program. Daytona College, Orange College, Valencia College and the Florida Institute of Technology are top considerations, as these institutions have similar aerospace courses that prepare students for their futures in the industry. ◆

Adding, “I don’t consider myself an educator, I am a ‘workforce development professional,’ preparing students both for the careers of today and the opportunities of tomorrow.” This mindset is seen throughout the Melbourne campus, which is led by Colleen Browne. A Keiser veteran of over 26 years and a campus president here in Brevard for 15 years, Browne serves as a Board member of both the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast and of Career Source Brevard. Browne explains, “We want students to feel like they are in the workplace, where they are getting a hands-on experience.” Keiser even has a dress code and attendance policies, because employers told them that, after spending most of their lives in archetypal schools, typical college graduates are often ill-prepared for the expectations of the real-world work environment. Because of the robust technology, aerospace and business environment here, Melbourne was Keiser’s second location. In addition, the Space Coast is home to several nationally recognized healthcare systems, which creates a demand for all types of medical professionals. This adaptation of degree offerings that is based on the needs of the community is seen at every Keiser location. Originally, the vision for Keiser was for a large single campus, much like an FIT; however, it gradually shifted to bringing educational solutions to where they were needed most. Today, the university offers campus-based degrees, online degrees and, rapidly growing in popularity, a hybrid of the two. “In Melbourne, about 20 percent of our students are pursuing online degrees and 20 percent are enrolled in a hybrid format,” Browne said. This flexibility may explain why 25 PERCENT OF ITS STUDENTS ARE EITHER ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY, HAVE FAMILY MEMBERS WHO ARE ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY, OR VETERANS. In addition, Keiser has the fourth largest number of nursing graduates in the state. In Melbourne, Keiser’s average student is 31 years old; 70 percent are female and they either work full or part time. Thus, the potential for equipping motivated, upwardly mobile individuals to meet tomorrow’s workforce needs is limitless.

SpaceCoast Business CEO Lunch & Learn Economic Impact of the Indian River Lagoon May 17, 2019; 11:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. No one wants our most valuable natural resource and iconic amenity, the Indian River Lagoon, to die while we debate. Come and hear from solution-oriented thought leaders, so we can move forward towards a unifying and sustainable solution. At SpaceCoast Magazines, we know that you want to do something that is environmentally and fiscally responsible to restore the Indian River Lagoon. In order to do that, you need information and ideas from both the scientific community and the region’s political leadership. With so many opinions and no plan of action, it is easy to feel frustrated and discouraged. We believe cooperative efforts between the public and private sector are the only way to solve a problem of this magnitude. We understand your desire to do something, which is why we have brought together one of the ardent political voices for Lagoon restoration, along with a leading researcher who has spent her career studying the problem. Speakers: Randy Fine, State Representative Dr. Kelli Hunsucker, Florida Institute of Technology

ured on the cover Our older daughter Kali, feat 2019 NG, of SpaceCoast LIVI February
n October of 2018 and featured as the cover of SpaceCoast LIVING in February 2019, our older daughter Kali was married. Then, in a backto-back campaign, our second daughter Ellie — seen here with her mother Judy — was married in March 2019. As you can tell from the picture, mom and daughter are two peas in a pod, or maybe better put, they are two pearls found in one oyster. There are no words to describe the feeling of successfully sending your two daughters off into life with their new families. The only word I can come up with is blessed. To describe my daughters, externally as you can see, they are breathtaking; however, their internal beauty and strength of character far exceed their external beauty.
For 36 years and at 60 years of age, Judy and I have followed these two rules. Yes, I am proud to say Judy’s age because without any needles or knives ever touching her face, she is one of the most strikingly beautiful women to have graced this planet; and, she has been a flight attendant for 35 years, which is one of the worst professions for your skin.
Here comes the bride: Mom Judy & daughter, Ellie
I told both of the new couples, as I have nothing left but wisdom, that there are only two rules of marriage: 1) You must keep God in your relationship; and, 2) You can never quit on the same day.
You must keep God in your relationship; and, never quit on the same day.
144 : SPAC ECOA ST L IV IN G
Her secrets are worth a lifetime and the proof is in her daughters who have trusted her enough to follow her teachings of discipline and of unconditional love. Judy was never a friend to my daughters – she is their mom and she is the quintessential description of motherhood. There is a plaque, a gift from Judy that has been on my bedside table for over 30 years and reads as a daily reminder: “He is the first man a woman ever loves. He is every woman’s first hero. And he is the one man against whom a woman will judge all other men. He is daddy.” Thus, the greatest compliment to this daddy is both girls chose God-fearing men of character. The journey continues, and it’s worth it.

Without a Heart, it’s just a machine. So in 1971, a little Heart built a different kind of airline—one that made sure everyone could fly. Everyone has important places to go. So we invented low-fares to help them get there. To us, you’re not 1A or 17B. You’re a person with a name, like Steve. Here, we think everyone deserves to feel special, no matter where you sit or how much you fly. And with all the places we’re going next, we’ll always put you first, because our love of People is still our most powerful fuel. Some say we do things differently. We say, why would we do things any other way? Without a Heart, it’s just a machine.
