Boeing’s Agnes Vargas educates and motivates all Boeing employees, putting astronaut safety at the forefront. By Sara Santora, Managing Editor

uman space exploration is a fundamental component of technological and economic advancement and growth. Though the rovers we send to the Moon and Mars are complex and advanced pieces of technology, many argue that humans just do the job better. The research that is conducted in space comes back to benefit all of us, and NASA cites that water purification efforts and improving eye surgery are just some of the many benefits that have come from human missions to the International Space Station (ISS). Of course, if we are sending humans into space, safety becomes a top priority. Enter: Agnes Vargas, Space Flight Awareness liaison for Boeing’s Space Flight Awareness (SFA) Program. It is her job to remind the employees and suppliers of Boeing of the importance of their job: that no matter where you fall in the chain of command, your job is to ensure astronaut safety.
Boeing’s liaison for NASA’s Space Flight Awareness (SFA) program.
Vargas has been with Boeing for 31 years. During the Shuttle era, while she worked at Kennedy Space Center, she volunteered with NASA to bus astronaut families to the Banana Creek viewing site.
She also tours schools across the country with active astronauts in the corps and encourages children to stay in school, pursue STEM and later get involved with the human spaceflight program.
“For example, I was assigned to take Mark Polansky’s mother during his first flight,” said Vargas. “I held his mother’s hand, while her hand was shaking as her son left Earth to go up to the Station for the very first time. I thought, ‘I need to make sure that she’s going to be okay.’”
This past August, Vargas had the opportunity to visit her hometown, The Bronx. She said, “To bring an astronaut to an underprivileged school and have him speak and be able to provide them the resources and knowledge with what they can do with their lives beyond today, is great.”
Now, with CST-100 Starliner preparing for its first manned mission, Vargas said, “As we move forward to the next generation of flight with the CST-100 Starliner, I anxiously await sharing the launch experience with Boeing astronaut Chris Ferguson’s family.”
Of course, as a support system role, Vargas herself is a constant reminder that you don’t have to be an engineer to support or be successful in the human spaceflight program. “There are many avenues; the engineers can’t do it alone,” she said.
This volunteer role was her first experience in supporting the astronauts and their families. As it always does, one thing led to another and Vargas was eventually offered the role of
14 : SPAC E COA ST L IV IN G | S PACECOAST L I V I N G .CO M
She explained that this role is both motivational and educational. Not only is she reminding employees of the importance of their jobs, but she is helping to put a face to the program, which helps to connect the dots for all the employees in their pursuits. “The biggest thing we always say is, ‘safety first’” commented Vargas. She explained that the program promotes this safety through education, and she will occasionally bring the astronauts and their families to the facilities to make the process more human. “Walking through KSC with Nicole Mann and her family helped remind people that there is a face to this program,” she said.
“There are so many different elements to spaceflight – engineering is key, but you need a whole team. You need a team with a variety of education,” she said. “We’re all made differently. I hope children can say, ‘I, too, can be
part of the space program, even if my interests don’t align with engineering or mathematics.’” Of course, she also has the opportunity to award Boeing employees, and helps to motivate the team and boost overall morale. She oversees the Silver Snoopy Awards – awards approved and presented by the astronaut corps and given to those who have aided in the safety of the astronauts. Vargas herself was a recipient of this award back in 2001. She also facilitates the Honoree Awards, and those awarded enjoy an opportunity to watch a launch, receive a tour of the grounds (award winners come from around the globe) and participate in an award ceremony. When asked about her favorite part of her job, she said: “When I walk into a room with an astronaut, the room lights up. The energy soars – it’s an amazing moment. Every time this happens, I get goosebumps. These employees get so excited to see the astronauts. To be that conduit that helps put this together, it’s awestruck for me. It never gets old.” Vargas reminded me that the importance of her work “is all in the details.” It is on her to ensure that the overall message of safety disseminates to everyone, and that everyone is reminded of their value. “I come from The Bronx, and I work with the smartest people in the universe,” she said. “I’ve been given grand opportunities; I’ve worked hard and have taken advantage of the opportunities that have come my way. I want kids and readers to know – take advantage of those opportunities.”

A Look Inside the CST-100 Starliner An interview with Boeing’s Melanie Weber By Sara Santora, Managing Editor Renderings & Photo Provided by Boeing

hen we think of rockets, most of us think of their exteriors; the massive sight of them towering over the buildings on the launch pad. But, just as a rocket’s exterior has to be designed to protect its passengers from the harsh exit and re-entry of the Earth’s atmosphere, the interior must be designed to, not only meet a variety of safety standards but also be efficient and comfortable for the crew. Melanie Weber, Subsystem Lead for Crew and Cargo Accommodations and Pad Team Lead with Boeing, is responsible for those design elements in the interior of the CST-100 Starliner, and she ensures that there is a lot more to consider than many might think. “There has been a lot of coordination between Chris Ferguson and me about where to place Velcro,” laughed Melanie. Velcro is important for crew efficiency, and “you can’t put [too much Velcro] next to each other, because it could propagate a fire.” Weber joined the program about eight years ago as part of a rotation program in Houston. “There was no design of [the Starliner’s] interior – it was just kind of a shell of a vehicle with basic concepts and capabilities. “When they brought me on, they said, ‘you can work on whatever you want,’ she continued. “I said that I wanted to do the interior design of the vehicle, and they said, ‘Perfect.’” Weber had to start first by laying out areas for the crew. She had to determine where the seats would be, where the cargo would be placed … she also had to help design the physical barrier between the crew and electrical wiring. And of course, there were other
16 : S PAC E COA ST L IV IN G | S PAC ECOA ST L I V I N G .CO M
considerations to be made like, where would the control panel be? And, where will the air conditioning go? “I knew that I was about to get into, what would be, one of the hardest things I would have to do in my life. It is the most challenging thing I’ve done in my entire life.” Weber explained that she has to also design the interior in such a way that the astronauts can perform their daily functions. “I want it to be intuitive,” she said. “I want them to go to their seat and automatically know. If they pause for a minute, I did something wrong. “Everything has to have a purpose,” she continued. “So many considerations go into designing a human spacecraft. It all goes back to human psychology.” One of the biggest challenges her team faced was the design of the seats. The astronauts from the Gemini and Apollo eras were all relatively the same size, so it was more doable to create a “one size fits all” seat. Today’s engineers have to accommodate a female in the 5th percentile, up to a male in the 95th percentile, and the seats need to be functional and reusable. It is a challenge, but Boeing found the solution. Weber explained that the seat is modifiable. To make the seat
M ARCH 2020: 17
custom for each astronaut, the engineers scan the astronauts’ backs, and build a 3D-printed insert which is placed into the structure of the seat. This insert is the only part of the seat that is changed between each mission, ensuring comfort for the crew, and affordability for Boeing. “There is a patent on this technology now, and we are very proud,” said Weber. As part of this role, Weber is also responsible for packing the cargo for the crew, and while she joked that this job is for those who are very good at Tetris, she also has to think of crew efficiency when packing. “I have to think about how the crew will open up the bag,” she said. “I have to consider, ‘how is it labeled?’ ‘Will the crew know the difference between one cable and the other?’” It falls upon her to ensure everything inside that Starliner is safe and efficient. But Weber has another role with Boeing: Pad Team Lead. Her crew was the first to stand next to a fully loaded Atlas V and Centaur rocket. She explained that her crew began at 2 a.m. the day of launch for the uncrewed orbital flight test. They had to do their checks to ensure the rocket was safe. The entire time, she was in communication with NASA and ULA, so if she were to happen upon something she didn’t like, she could communicate with them and let them know. She did say that “Everything was way quieter than I expected it to be. Why? Because everything was going perfectly.” Weber continued that the day of launch is emotional, as “it is more than just a spacecraft for us. It’s part of our lives. It’s an extension of ourselves. “I know we’re supposed to have work-life balance, but most people here fail miserably on that,” she continued. “We’re human spaceflight – we love what we do.” The CST-100 Starliner is an important and necessary step in human space exploration. And Weber and her team are just some of the incredible people ensuring its success.

oeing has an illustrious history with the space program. It was Boeing who, decades ago, built and tested the Saturn V rocket for NASA, the rocket that would be powerful enough to launch the first men to the Moon. Today, Boeing has been hard at work developing the CST-100 Starliner, which will be critical in transporting humans to and from the International Space Station, and the Space Launch System, the next rocket in line to take man and woman to the Moon. In honor of Women’s History Month, Boeing provided bios on a handful of the incredible women working for both the Starliner and the SLS, who are going above and beyond the call of duty in the name of advancing human space exploration.
Rebecca Regan: The Boeing Company, CST-100 Starliner Rebecca Regan is the communications manager for Boeing's CST100 Starliner, which is on the cusp of returning human spaceflight launch and landing capabilities to NASA and the United States. She joined Boeing as a communications specialist in early 2016 and helped build the communications team that is responsible for sharing the incredible Boeing Space and Launch story with the world. Prior to that, Regan was an integral member of the NASA Commercial Crew Program communications team at Kennedy Space Center. She worked media briefings, news conferences, live television coverage and social media outreach for flights, tests and program activities. She holds a bachelor's degree in radio-television broadcasting from the University of Central Florida and a master's degree in global strategic communications from the University of Florida. She and her husband, Adam, are excited to be raising their two children, Natalie (8) and Colton (5), in the same Titusville neighborhood that they grew up in, where you can step outside your front door and watch humanity leave Earth on amazing journeys to space.
Amanda Ireland: The Boeing Company, CST-100 Starliner Amanda Ireland is a Space Coast transplant from Philadelphia, PA where she graduated from Drexel University with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in mechanical engineering. She’s currently putting her education to great use on Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner program as the launch campaign manager, where she coordinates all spacecraft and rocket integration milestones ahead of liftoff. Among many other activities, she is responsible for making sure the reusable Starliner spacecraft gets safely out of the factory, transported to the launch site and stacked on top of its rocket. She also oversees the plan to keep astronauts safe and healthy ahead of their flight by coordinating Boeing’s Health Stabilization plan which outlines the necessary procedures for how individuals interact with flight crews during the final two weeks before launch. Then, when launch day finally arrives, Ireland sits on console as a liaison between spacecraft, launch vehicle and crew transportation teams to ensure necessary information flows quickly and seamlessly. Ireland is passionate about STEM education and has represented the Boeing company during local outreach events hosted on the Space Coast for students and industry professionals. When not preparing for upcoming launch campaigns, Ireland is making time to earn her pilot’s license.
M A RCH 2020: 19
Liz Poul: The Boeing Company, CST-100 Starliner Liz Poul has been a Space Coast resident for 20 years. She began her career working on the shuttle program’s solid rocket boosters and has dreamed of returning humans to space from American soil ever since the program ended in 2011. Now, she’s about to get her chance working as an electrical systems engineer on Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner which is preparing to launch astronauts as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. As a member of the spacecraft test team, she is responsible for ensuring powered systems and data sensors are functioning properly ahead of major integrated test campaigns, such as environmental qualification, pad abort and orbital flight. She even has a role on console during Starliner launches inside Boeing’s brand-new flight control center at Kennedy Space Center, and co-owns one of the community’s local treasures, Canaveral Meats and Deli, which has been in business for over 30 years. When not working inside Starliner’s production factory or running the family store, Poul and her husband Roman enjoy setting sail aboard Port Canaveral’s incredible cruise lines with their two lovely girls, Vicki (26) and Sabina (14).
Kristine Ramos: The Boeing Company, Space Launch System Kristine Ramos is a critical member of the Space Launch System (SLS) Program at Kennedy Space Center. For the past three years, Ramos has been following the world’s largest rocket across the country, which is being built today for NASA by Boeing in order to take humans back to the Moon and on to Mars. She first supported the rocket’s design as an engineer in Huntsville, AL, then as a task lead for its production at the Michoud Assembly Facility in Louisiana. Soon Kristine will support the rocket’s Green Run Test as a readiness lead at Stennis Space Center in Mississippi when the rocket’s engines will be fired for the first time. She looks forward to joining the rest of her Space Coast teammates later this year in the lead up to launch of the first Artemis mission. Before joining the SLS team, Ramos held various engineering roles on both the Space Shuttle and International Space Station programs, as well as numerous defense aircraft including the Chinook, Apache and Blackhawk helicopters. When she is not playing rocket scientist, she is an avid baker, and she enjoys running obstacle course races and kickboxing.
2 0 : S PAC E COA ST L IV I N G | S PAC ECOA ST L I V I N G .CO M
Rosie Gonzalez: The Boeing Company, Space Launch System Rosie Gonzalez has been a leader in the aerospace industry for over 24 years. She currently manages the software team that is developing launch vehicle control systems to test NASA’s deep space rocket during its upcoming hot fire called the Green Run Test at Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. Before that, she was a technical human factors lead at NASA’s Usability Testing and Analysis Facility providing support on how to improve work and life in space by assessing Space Shuttle and International Space Station hardware. With a degree in industrial engineering specializing in ergonomics and safety, Gonzalez has even worked as a human factors consultant outside of Boeing developing training workshops and job task analyses to keep people safe. Gonzalez enjoys exploring the area’s theme parks with her husband Moises, and joyful children, Leo (7) and Alessandra (6), especially Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Walt Disney World.
Karoline Pearce: The Boeing Company, International Space Station Karoline Pearce began working for Boeing on the International Space Station (ISS) Program at the Kennedy Space Center as an engineer when she was just 19 years old. She now leads various projects including the management of on-orbit astronaut emergency masks and portable breathing apparatuses. She also develops test procedures, schematics and fabrication plans for flight hardware flown on ISS resupply missions. She’s responsible for creating design solutions to address any nonconforming ISS parts and systems, as well as participating in design reviews with the project and engineering teams. The Florida Institute of Technology graduate is an avid pilot and enjoys flying airplanes in her free time. When not in the air, Pearce is likely spending quality time with her beagle puppy appropriately named Snoopy and German shepherd with a “call sign” of Charlie.

any are familiar with the men who became heroes in the ’50s and ’60s, you know, the ones who climbed inside rockets and ascended to space. But, many are less familiar with the women who were there as well, the women who are being added to the ranks each and every day. NASA plans to send the next man and the first woman on the Moon by 2024, under the Artemis program, which was named after Apollo’s twin sister, Artemis. This will be a historic first for the woman selected. According to The Washington Post, women make up about a third of NASA’s workforce, 28% of senior executive leadership positions and 16% of senior scientific employees. And according to that same article, 24% of women make up the aerospace industry at large. Though these percentages are small, they signal growth within the industry – growth that will, hopefully, continue in the next decade. The Artemis Program served as inspiration for this year’s Cover Model competition. Cover Model 2020 is dedicated to the women of the space program; those astronauts, engineers, flight directors, etc. who have helped make space travel possible, and those women known as the astronaut wives club, who, 50+ years ago, held down their homes and made the sacrifices that allowed for their husbands to become heroes. Here’s to the women of the past, present and future of space travel.

AMERICA’S FIRST REAL HOUSEWIVES In the 1950s and ’60s, the astronauts and their families, as well as others involved with the Apollo and Gemini missions, were moved into the same subdivision in Texas. Here, while the husbands were off training to become American heroes, the women worked together to help raise each other’s children, tend to the yard work, cook, clean and, most importantly, help each other through the emotional stress of the time. “The fathers of the families were gone a great deal of the time, and yet they had very strong wives and families who could function without them,”
said Jan Evans, wife of Ronald E. Evans, for Air & Space Magazine. “All astronaut wives are seriously loyal to one another and have been from the beginning and will be forever.” During this time, these women became American symbols in their own right – they were the wives of heroes and represented America and its values. They were, as Susan Borman once said, expected to be the perfect American family. Though of course, with husbands always away in training (and some having affairs), the constant fear of loss and the need to be perfect – after all, there was the understanding that their husbands’ jobs depended on their perfect public image – the women experienced as many lows as they did highs. But the women supported one another, and their sacrifices aided in the success of the missions. Though history is often unkind to these women, so often forgetting the importance of their roles and the strength with which they moved about life, they were just as much a part of this lunar history as those who worked for NASA.

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED Over at NASA, women were conducting the math and science necessary to make these lunar journeys possible. During the Apollo era, women made up less than 5% of NASA’s workforce – but it was the hard work of this small percentage that led to Neil Armstrong’s small step. Margaret Hamilton, the woman who coined the term “software engineering,” oversaw the team who created the onboard system for the Apollo missions. According to Business Insider, her team’s software system was “so fool-proof that adaptations of it were used on the first U.S. space station (Skylab) and during the space shuttle era, too.” Of course, Hidden Figures made Katherine Johnson famous, the woman responsible for calculating and plotting Apollo 11’s trajectory to the Moon.
Her research, which included backup plans for the astronauts in case their systems failed, was instrumental in the safe landing of the Apollo 13 crew. The first woman to sit in Mission Control was Frances “Poppy” Northcutt during the Apollo 8 Mission. The only woman in Mission Control, it was her job to ensure the astronauts’ return-trajectory was sound so that they could return safely to Earth. During the Apollo 11 mission, only one woman was present in the Launch Control Center – JoAnn Morgan, the instrumentation controller. Though these women made huge contributions to the space program, it was still very much a gentleman’s club, to say the least. They don’t often receive the recognition they deserve, but their work was integral to the space program, and without them, man would not have landed on the Moon or returned safely home.

WEIGHTLESSNESS: THE GREAT EQUALIZER The ’80s welcomed the Space Shuttle program, which helped to build the International Space Station. The fleet – Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour – conducted cutting-edge research until the program’s end in 2011. It was this program that allowed for an American woman to finally journey to space: Sally Ride. On her two missions with the program, Ride served as a mission specialist, helping to deploy satellites. But while many women flew as astronauts during the Shuttle program, only two of those women served as commanders of the ship: Eileen Collins and
Pamela Melroy. Eileen Collins was the first woman to command the ship, which happened in 1999. She also commanded a second time in 2005, before Melroy commanded her own ship in 2007. It was also during the Shuttle era that the first U.S. woman completed a spacewalk; NASA astronaut, Kathryn D. Sullivan, accomplished this on Oct. 11, 1984 outside of Space Shuttle Challenger. (Of course, the first all-female spacewalk would happen decades later in Oct. 2019.) Though women were still outnumbered in NASA during this era, women were beginning to be recognized for their contributions to scientific research and became American heroes, like those men who came before them.

ARTEMIS (& BEYOND) Now, NASA is in the midst of returning man to the Moon, this time, bringing woman along with him. Today, more women are not only seen in Mission Control, but are also being honored by NASA and its astronauts, receiving the media attention they deserve for the hard work and talent they provide. In the next decade, we hope to see the number of women in aerospace continue to grow, and to keep watching as women from across the country and around the world continue to make history. Keep reading to learn more about the Artemis program and those women who are in the running to go to the Moon.

Prepare for Takeoff Project Artemis ushers us into a new era of space travel. By Sara Santora, Managing Editor
T
he Apollo moon landings helped scientists and researchers better comprehend the lunar surface. According to an article on Space.com, the samples brought back by NASA astronauts helped bring new insight into how planets are formed. Of course, many mysteries still remain, and a voyage back to the lunar surface will help all of us better understand our expansive universe. Though the Apollo program was shut down in 1975, our current presidential administration has challenged NASA to return astronauts to the Moon by 2024. And, while it may seem like an easy deadline to meet, as we have already successfully put man on the Moon and returned him safely back home, there are challenges still to overcome and entirely new design details to consider. But nonetheless, those with the Artemis program are diligently working to return us to the Moon. Project Artemis was given its name, because Artemis, in Greek mythology, is the twin sister of Apollo. This name is representative, not just of the similar general mission objective of landing humans on the Moon, but also of the fact that this will be the mission that puts the first woman on the Moon. It’s representative of an exciting new era of space exploration.
“I think America’s Space Program is heading in a very exciting direction as we prepare to send the first woman and next man to the Moon,” said Charlie BlackwellThompson, director of NASA’s Exploration Ground Systems Program, and NASA’s first female launch director, who will oversee the countdown and liftoff of NASA’s Space Launch System and Orion spacecraft during its first test flight. “What we learn from the Moon will change the way in which we explore and prepare for other deep space destinations like Mars. With the Artemis missions, we will journey beyond our home planet putting boots on the south pole of the Moon. Being a part of this effort is a once in a career opportunity and I am thrilled to be a part of it.” According to NASA’s website, the intention of the Artemis program is to inspire a new generation to “follow the pursuit of knowledge and exploration which will propel us forward to Mars.” Christine Shepperd, with Gateway, explained further that the intention of Artemis is “to extend our exploration to the Moon in preparation of going to Mars.” She also said that the eventual goal is to use the Moon as a lunar outpost and training ground, where NASA can test equipment and technologies that would be necessary for a mission to Mars.

This ability to test on the Moon is also key to ensuring the astronauts are protected against radiation. For now, however, astronauts will be sent to the south pole of the Moon, where frozen ice was recently discovered. If they could manufacture and farm the elements in this ice and make water, this could help future missions to Mars, as well as aid in creating a lunar economy. NASA is also in the process of building The Lunar Gateway, which is integral for these lunar missions. The Gateway is a similar concept to the International Space Station (ISS), but a much smaller size. Because the lunar missions will be 30 days as opposed to the three month - year-long missions to the ISS, the astronauts don’t need as much space. The Gateway will primarily be used to store rovers and other equipment, with small living quarters for the astronauts. However, The Gateway is subject to expansion later on, if NASA feels it’s necessary. Though this program is seen as a bridge to Mars, as Shepperd said, the goal is to eventually use the Moon as a lunar outpost, so missions to the Moon would happen simultaneously with missions to Mars. Because the Moon is a bit closer, it would be easier for astronauts to send damaged equipment there, as opposed to sending it back to the Earth’s surface. “It makes a lot more sense than trying to go straight from Earth to Mars,” said Shepperd. “... the Moon is 250,000 miles away – we can still get there within five days if there is an emergency or an issue.” As technology has evolved since the Apollo missions, the technology inside the rocket and the capsule needed an update, so those with project Artemis have been hard at work ensuring the technology used by the astronauts is up
to date. And, she further explained that the Orion capsule, along with the landing module, will be reusable – a major change from the Apollo era, where the lunar modules were left in space and on the Moon’s surface. Though the first manned flight will not take place until 2024, NASA is planning on Artemis I (the first uncrewed flight) to launch in 2021. “Here at KSC, we are in the final phase of our ground systems verification and validation,” said BlackwellThompson. “Flight hardware for the Artemis I mission is arriving at KSC this year and we will begin integrating the flight elements together (the SLS rocket with the Orion spacecraft) testing them out and paving the way to that first launch.” Returning to space and the Moon is exciting, as the research done there will come back to help us. Shepperd reminded that the space program creates high-paying jobs nationwide, and the technology developed for these programs come back to benefit us. And, she mentioned that the astronauts who have been to the ISS have said that journeying to space helps them to better understand the Earth’s climate. Understanding this better can help us create better solutions to saving the Earth. But of course, journeying to space helps us better understand our universe as a whole, and fills a void so many of us don’t realize we have. “As a country we are called to explore,” said BlackwellThompson. “We are called to understand what lies beyond what we currently know. Human exploration is a critical part of expanding our understanding of the solar system and deep space.”

One Giant Leap for Humankind:
The 12 women that could go to the Moon
By Heather Motro, Junior Assistant Editor Photos provided by NASA

ASA astronauts go above and beyond, in more ways than one. To even qualify for the NASA program, it takes a bachelor’s degree in a science – or math-related field and either three years’ work experience in that field or 1,000 hours of piloting. While that in itself is a big achievement, most astronauts pursue more education, more research and more experience before they are chosen as a NASA trainee, where they will face rigorous mental and physical training. To be a woman in the male-dominated NASA astronaut program is to add adversity to an already daunting endeavor, but the 12 women in the current NASA Astronaut Corps take it in a stride. NASA needs the grit and intelligence of these women for its next phase of discovery. As part of the Artemis program, NASA will choose one man and one woman from the current corps to explore and research the Moon as a steppingstone to putting humans on Mars. The first woman on the Moon – ever – will be one of these 12 astronauts.

Stephanie Wilson
Skilled engineer Stephanie Wilson is the second African American woman to ever go to space. Her 42 days – accumulated over the course of three missions – are the longest any African American has ever been in space. In these missions, Wilson operated robotics and performed maintenance and repairs on the International Space Station (ISS). At the end of her most recent mission, Wilson robotically transferred “Leonardo,” a vessel for equipment and experiment results, from the ISS to the shuttle to bring home to Earth.

Dr. Tracy Caldwell Dyson
Dr. Tracy Caldwell Dyson grew up learning about how wiring and circuits work, as her father was an electrician. After working as an electrician in her father’s company through her undergraduate years studying chemistry at California State University, Caldwell Dyson received a PhD in chemistry from the University of California. Caldwell Dyson’s mastery of chemistry and electricity enabled her to operate the Endeavor’s flight deck and robot arm on her second spaceflight as Mission Specialist #1. On her next spaceflight, Caldwell Dyson spent over 22 hours in spacewalk – that is, in space outside the space station or shuttle – repairing a malfunctioning pump on the station. Capt. Sunita Williams Before coming to NASA, Sunita Williams was a Captain in the U.S. Navy, where she flew more than 30 different types of aircraft and aided in Operations Desert Shield and Provide Comfort, among others. In space, Williams is a record-breaker: she broke the women’s world record for longest spacewalk for the first time in 2006 with a cumulative 29 hours in spacewalk, then again in 2012 with 50 hours’ worth of spacewalks in one mission. Both these records were broken by now-retired Peggy Whitson, but Williams’s other record is hard to beat. With the aid of a special space station treadmill, she ran the Boston Marathon in real-time and became the first person to run a marathon in space. Williams is about to add to her 321 days in space a as a crew member of the Boeing Starliner’s first non-test crewed flight this December.

An expert in physics, Shannon Walker helped design and construct the robotics for the International Space Station in the late 1990s. Later, Walker got to see her robotics in action when she traveled to the ISS in 2010. As Flight Engineer 1 of the mission, Walker worked with over 130 experiments in human research, biology, material science and technology. On that same mission, Walker operated robotics that assisted astronauts in replacing a pump on the ISS.

Growing up in Hawaii and California gave Dr. Megan McArthur an appreciation for the Pacific that led her to a PhD in oceanography. As Chief Scientist for the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, McArthur directed research and technology, including collection of specimens and other data at sea. In 2009, instead of out to sea she journeyed out to space as robotics crew member on a mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope. It was the last mission to the Hubble, and McArthur was the last person to touch it. Capt. Sunita Williams (top right), Dr. Megan McArthur (middle left) and Shannon Walker (bottom right)

With degrees in both engineering and medicine, Dr. Serena Auñón-Chancellor served as both a flight engineer and a biologist when she went to space in 2018. Aboard the ISS for 197 days, Auñón-Chancellor researched algae growth and cancer treatments. Now, she performs medicine via coms for the ISS and Commercial Crew Branch. Outside of NASA, Auñón-Chancellor offers medical care to the disadvantaged.
Dr. Kathleen Rubins As a doctor of cancer biology, Dr. Rubins was well-equipped to be the first person to sequence DNA in space. She not only sequenced more than two-billion DNA base pairs – the chemical structures in our genes that determine our physical characteristics – but also grew heart cells, copied DNA and experimented with the genetic material of microbes, all during her 115 days in orbit around the Earth.
Dr. Jeanette Epps With a PhD in aerospace engineering, seven years in the CIA and extensive experience in cave and underwater exploration – including a passion for scuba diving – Dr. Jeanette J. Epps is currently working as on-ground communication support for the International Space Station. She has not yet been to space, but when she does, she will be the first African American to be a crew member on the ISS. In addition to a degree in space studies, Meir researched deep-diving emperor penguins and high-flying geese for her doctoral and post-doctoral work, so it’s safe to say she has always been an explorer of the faraway. Meir has been in space aboard the ISS since this past October. In fact, she and Christina Koch made history on Oct. 18, 2019 when the two women took the first-ever all-female spacewalk.
Christina Koch When she was a child, Christina H. Koch dreamed of going to space. After attaining degrees in electrical engineering and physics and undergoing the rigorous NASA astronaut training, Koch is blowing her childhood dream out of the water. She saw space for the first time in March of 2019 when she served on the crew of an ISS maintenance mission. During this mission, Koch and Meir made the aforementioned all-female spacewalk. Koch spent 328 days in space – the longest spaceflight in history to be completed by a woman.
LtCol. Anne McClain LtCol. hough Star Wars takes place in a galaxy far, far away, this galaxy is lucky enough to have Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, a land where you can live your own Star Wars adventure. Located in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is truly an out of this world experience. Galaxy’s Edge is next level when it comes the overall feel and theme. The park includes an actual Millennium Falcon – how cool is that?! You will also find roaming characters like Rey, Chewbacca, Stormtroopers and, if you’re lucky, you might even see Kylo Ren. There is even a rebel spy who may need your help hiding from the First Order. Disney really put a lot of effort into this land’s experience, and it shows. If you don’t already know about the Play Disney Parks App, download it now. I bring this up because it’s become one of my favorite things to do in Galaxy’s Edge. The app allows you to hack nearby droids and scan cargo to see what’s inside. It’s a small touch but who wouldn’t want to hack the Millennium Falcon? Speaking of the Falcon, let’s talk about the rides. Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run is a great attraction. This ride is interactive, and there are three different jobs that you can fulfill. However, do note that the cast members will assign you your job upon entering, so you may not get what you want the first time around. You will either be a driver, a gunner or an engineer. I’ve only been the gunner and it’s tiring but I thought it was fun! I’m hoping to be a driver in my next visit. The second ride, and in many opinions, the best ride to ever exist, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is a one-of-akind attraction. I was finally able to ride recently, and I can say that I agree with everyone else. This ride is unlike any other. Disney put everything they had into this attraction. The technology, the scenes and the reveals are unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. I won’t share too many details about this attraction because you really need to experience it for yourself, but I can say that I was mind blown. Oga’s Cantina is one of my favorite parts of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. You will need a reservation to enter, and understandably so, as it’s very small inside. Once inside, they have a really creative menu of drinks, with the crowd favorite being the Fuzzy Tauntaun (Cîroc Peach Vodka, Bols Peach Schnapps, Simply® Orange with Tangerine, Pure Cane Sugar and "Buzz Button Tingling" Foam)
which turns your lips numb! And we can’t forget about DJ Rex, who is spinning the best galactic jams while you sip delicious cocktails, or mocktails. My personal favorite is the Hyperdrive which is a non-alcoholic beverage consisting of POWERADE Mountain Berry Blast, white cranberry juice, black cherry puree and Sprite. There are plenty of food options available throughout Galaxy’s Edge, from popcorn to more filling, quick-service options. Docking Bay 7 is where you will find breakfast, lunch and dinner options with a quick-service style. I personally have not eaten here yet, but I hear the food is good. I typically dine at Ronto Roasters, which has one of the best food items on property - the Ronto Rap (Roasted Pork, Grilled Pork Sausage, Peppercorn Sauce and Tangy Slaw wrapped in Pita Bread). There’s also a breakfast Ronto Wrap (Scrambled Eggs, Grilled Pork Sausage, Shredded Cheddar and Peppercorn Sauce wrapped in Pita Bread) which is also delicious. But wait, there’s more. There are two guest experiences that are truly unique. The first is Savi's Workshop where you get to build your own lightsaber! It’s an intimate hands-on experience and everyone that has done it has said it’s truly amazing. It has a hefty price tag ($200) but if you have always wanted your own lightsaber, do it. The second is the Droid Depot where, if you haven’t guessed it already, you get to make your own Droid! This is something I really want to do. I already have a name picked out and everything. This experience costs $150 but the Droid is remote controlled and reacts to the environment, which is pretty dang cool if you ask me. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has something for everyone, from the hardcore fans to the casual park-goers. Shops filled with Star Wars memorabilia and delicious food await you at this one-of-a-kind theme park experience. It’s definitely something to visit. M ARCH 2020: 43

ason Hook began Operation Superhero two years ago, after encountering the work of California artist, Josh Rossi. Rossi used his talents as a photographer and Photoshop expert to transform young children into their favorite superheroes and, touched by the idea, Hook decided he would use his very same talents to do the same for children here on the Space Coast. To accomplish such an ambitious project, Hook partners with non-profits, who act as both the fundraisers for the project, as well as the panelists, per say, in deciding which children will be transformed. The first foundation to work with Hook was Puzzle Box Academy, who then selected two young children with developmental disorders to don a costume and spend a few hours in a photoshoot with Hook. He then, along with the help of Nevin Flinchbaugh, transformed the images into high-quality
movie posters, which can be cherished by the families for years to come. This year, Hook partnered with Candlelighters of Brevard to bring the project to even larger heights. Candlelighters chose six children for this project, and raised the funds necessary for costumes, printing costs and an incredible reveal party at the Oaks, where the children and their families were able to enjoy their very own red carpet, private theater and special Hollywood-themed afterparty. Candlelighters even recruited videographer, Josh Painter, to film and create movie trailers for each of the children, which were played in the private theater before the reveal of their posters. The families took the posters home with them, and the images can be used as a constant reminder of the strength their children possess and use as their weapon in the battle against the evil villain, cancer. Hook had an incredible experience with Candlelighters, so Hook’s Operation Superhero will be a recurring program for Candlelighters of Brevard. Check in with them to see how you can help.

n January 2018 an angel-faced four-year-old from Viera looked at her dolls and felt something was missing. Ah ha! Every good outfit needs accessories. So, Ella Grace Helton picked up some plastic beads, let her curly brown hair fall in her face and got to work making little bracelets for her inanimate friends. Soon, neighbors and family were placing orders. Just like that, an entrepreneur was born, and Brevard County gained a new small business, Ella Bella Beads. Little did Ella know, her business, in just one short year, would lead to starring in a national TV commercial alongside soon-to-be Hall of Famer and beloved New York Yankees team captain Derek Jeter. The heartwarming American Family Insurance TV spot highlights Ella Bella Beads’ partnership with The Children’s Hunger Project (proceeds of every bracelet are donated to the Brevard County charity). Ella was passionate about her love of jewelry making and ready for the big leagues. So, as any small business owner would, she tested her business concept at the Brevard Children’s Business Fair, an annual event held at The Avenue Viera. Every year, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., The Avenue Viera sponsors and hosts a unique, one-day marketplace showcasing the creative goods and services of 65 businesses run by brilliant, young entrepreneurs ages six to 16. It is the only event of its kind in Brevard County where kids are the boss. The event is open to the public and free to attend. Central Florida families will experience a vibrant mix of delicious food, inventive crafts, cool artwork, hilarious comic books and so much more! The Avenue Viera and FLVS (Florida Virtual School) have sponsored the event since its inception. “There’s no other local platform available that allows our community’s youth to explore and tap into their inner entrepreneur like the Brevard Children’s Business Fair,” shares the nonprofit’s Executive Director Nora McFarland. “This event teaches all the fundamental skills of operating a business— from concept to creation to execution. Strengthening the Human-Dog Bond

rowing up, most tend to get involved with some type of sport. Soccer, football and softball are all popular choices. However, have you ever considered involving your pup in a sport? You may not know it, but there are a huge variety of sports and activities that you and your canine partner can participate in together, and many of them offer competitions, some of which may be broadcast nation-wide. Shows such as the Westminster, Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge and most recently, Top Dog on A&E, all showcase the brilliant talents of human-dog teams.
Agility Agility is a sport where a human handler guides his or her dog through a series of obstacles that are predetermined by the judge who designs the
54 : S PAC E COA ST L IV IN G | S PAC ECOA ST L I V I N G .CO M
course. The objective is to guide the dog correctly through the course as quickly as possible. The dog cannot practice on the course until it is their turn to compete; however, the handler has an opportunity to walk the course beforehand to determine a plan. The handler will use his or her body motion, hand signals and voice to guide the dog. Obstacles include multiple jumps, tunnels, weave poles, teeter totter, A-frame and a long-elevated board called a dog-walk. Any dog can compete in agility, but certain breeds such as the border collie, Australian shepherd and Shetland sheepdogs tend to have a special affinity for agility due their high drive and quick speed. The American Kennel Club (AKC) offers resources for learning more about agility, as does the United States Dog Agility Association (USDAA) and Canine Performance Events (CPE).
Disc Dog Disc, or Frisbee, is much like what it sounds. The handler throws a disc and the dog must catch it. There are multiple different Frisbee or disc games that can be played with your dog, as well as a few different competitive outlets. UpDog Challenge offers games where you and the dog can accumulate points based on how many catches are made. Other opportunities include “freestyle disc” where the handler and dog design and perform a routine in which the handler throws discs of varying distance and height and the dog must catch and retrieve them.
Dock Diving Is your dog a natural swimmer and always jumping in your pool? Dock diving may be the perfect sport for your pup! Dock diving is exactly what it sounds like – a handler throws a toy off a dock; the dog gets a running start and the longest jump into the water wins. The best dock divers can jump over 25 feet into a pool of water. There are some modified games such as air retrieve, where the dog must not only have the longest jump into the water but must also catch a suspended toy in their mouth in order to win. The American Kennel Club offers dock diving events, as does the North American Diving Dogs. Canine sports are a great way for your dog to get some physical and mental exercise and it doubles as a fun way for the handler to get outside and move as well. The human-animal bond is strengthened, and your dog learns new skills and has fun in the process.

Documenting Your Legacy:
Olivia Womack Portraiture By Darcy Maeda Manning, Contributor Instagram: @makeupbydarcymm
A
ward-winning, published Boudoir Portrait Photographer Olivia Womack has seen it all. Clients from all backgrounds and seasons of life have stepped in front of her Nikon D700. Every woman’s journey to that point is uniquely her own, but many leave with one thing in common – a new sense of empowerment and selflove. “Every woman deserves to love herself deeply,” Womack said earnestly. The boy mom of two will be celebrating a milestone birthday herself this year. Although turning just 40, she’s a bit of an old soul. If Womack had her way, she’d take things back to the Renaissance, an era where art was the prevailing zeitgeist, and women’s bodies were celebrated masterpieces. “There is so much beauty in the female form and I use boudoir portraiture to capture the essence of every woman – who she is at her core and the journey she’s endured that has brought her to me. My goal with every client is to document her legacy. “We women are powerful creatures,” Womack continued. “We’re resilient. We love selflessly and unconditionally. We nurture and protect our babies and our family. We endure heartache, battle demons and overcome mountainous hurdles. All of this 58 : S PAC E COA ST L IV IN G | S PAC ECOA ST L I V I N G .CO M
can be captured in a single photo.” All portrait sessions with Womack end with a photo reveal where clients see their images, and sometimes themselves, for the first time. “It’s a really powerful and emotional moment for me, too. For many who chose to celebrate their milestone birthday in front of my camera, it's often the first time in decades they’ve seen themselves as something other than ‘mom.’ This experience helps them remember, or discover, the beautiful woman within. I have the honor of celebrating this pivotal moment with my clients and it’s something I cherish deeply.”
An Intimate Art Experience This year Womack has teamed up with internationally acclaimed Collage Artist Derek Gores (IG: @derekgores) to release a unique art collaboration celebrating women: An Intimate Art Experience. Gores, a long-time fixture of the Eau Gallie Arts District, has created commissioned work for brands such as Prada, Adidas, among others, and has exhibited with top galleries in Los Angeles, Paris and New England, to name a few. He has been a staple in the Space Coast art scene and critical to its current evolution. Art lovers seeking an exclusive interactive art experience will be intrigued by what Womack and Gores are offering – exquisite boudoir portraits by Womack which will then be incorporated into a signature Gores custom collage of the client. In addition to photos taken by Womack, the collage will include personal tidbits such as favorite books, song lyrics, unforgettable vacation spots, recipes, cocktails and fun personal hints Gores enjoys sneaking into the artwork. When asked about his medium of choice, Gores
responded, “Collage lets me be a visual storyteller. Life is a collection of moments, and I try to let my collage pieces work that way as well. Hints of memories and textures combine on the canvas in a magical way that words couldn’t possibly.” Christine from Miami recently turned 40 and is choosing to celebrate with Womack and Gores. “While the thought of turning older had never fazed me before, turning the big 4-0 was somehow different. Instead of letting it slow me down or get me down, I took it as an opportunity to work hard at becoming the healthiest, fittest, all around best version of myself possible. This is the perfect time for me to work with Olivia and Derek to document this time in my life.” Olivia Womack Portraiture 200 Willard St., Ste. 2E Cocoa, FL 32922 772.494.1234 info@oliviawomack.com IG: @oliviawomackphotography FB: Olivia Womack Photography M A RCH 2020: 59

Gatto’s Tire & Auto Service:
Car care in a fast-paced world By Heather Motro, Junior Assistant Editor Photography by Jason Hook
Facebook: Jason Hook Photography | Instagram: @jasonhookphotography
4 “
9 years ago, cars were much simpler,” Mike McHenry, advertising and marketing manager at Gatto’s Tire & Auto Service told me: You would have gotten your oil changed every three months. You would have shared the road with “The Big Three” of Ford, GM and Dodge, rather than Toyotas, Jaguars and other foreign cars. And you could have shared transmission, radiator and other fluids with any car around you, as almost all of them used the same types of fluids.
“My grandfather right there –” McHenry pointed at a framed photo on his desk of Mike Gatto – “He founded the company in 1971. We started out with just tires –simple stuff. Over the years, we’ve gotten more into maintenance and repair. Now we do full diagnostics.” Even though Gatto’s has grown to accommodate the increasingly complex demands of auto care, the company itself remains a simple, honest family business committed to sensible car care for all car owners.
In the past half-century, technology has improved. Most cars can go nearly a year without needing their oil changed. The Big Three are still a big deal, but cars from England, Japan, China and Germany populate the roads, too. And with this new diversity comes new demands and specifications for car care, unique for each year and make of a car.
3 top tips for car maintenance
60 : SPAC E COA ST L IV IN G | S PAC ECOA ST L I V I N G .CO M
1. Air up your tires regularly.
Tire manufacturers recommend getting your tire pressure done once a month, although McHenry contended that several times a year is reasonable. Keeping your tires at the right pressure

extends tire life, improves fuel mileage and helps your car handle properly. All you have to do is pull up to the bay of your nearby Gatto’s and the ASE-certified technicians will air up your tires for you for free, no purchase necessary. “We really want you to get the most life out of your tires and air pressure is one of those things out of all the things you think about that’s probably the easiest to fix,” McHenry said. “Just one simple thing like that can have a lot of benefits for you.”
2. Be aware of what needs to get done at what mileage.
What is the easiest way to do this? Get a full diagnostic. When the technicians at Gatto’s change your oil, they’ll also give you an update on anything your car might need soon. “We check your fluids. We check your filters. We air up your tires for you,” McHenry explained. “So, we might let you know, ‘Ok, you’re driving a Ford Focus, and based on what Ford recommends, next time you come in for services, this is what you need to get done.’ We give you a list so you can plan.”
3. Keep your car care with a local, family-owned business.
“A lot of places, they know they’re probably only going to get you in there one time, they try to get all the money out of you in one time,” McHenry said. Unlike a chain auto service company, Gatto’s values the local community and refuses to pressure customers into making purchases. Instead, Gatto’s employees first inform customers on what’s going on with their car, then offer advice on how to go forward. “27 years ago, when I started, and even 50 years ago when the company started, it was always, whatever the customer’s needs are, that’s what you can communicate to them, and then let them decide,” McHenry explained. “We really want your business for life. Not only just you, but your family, your kids.” Another perk of a long-established family-owned company is that, even though they’re based locally, Gatto’s carries parts for any car at any price point just as if they were a nationwide chain.
Mike’s New Car After introducing me to Gatto’s President Pam Gatto (McHenry’s mother) and Gatto’s Operation Manager Scott McHenry (his brother), Mike McHenry led me out to the bay, where he pointed out an enormous pickup truck parked at the far end. It’s his new ride, a 2019 GMC, lifted up. Tricked-out trucks are a very southern trend, and one that McHenry, a self-proclaimed “car guy,” is totally on board with. In addition to lift kits like the one McHenry used on his truck, Gatto’s also offers rim and tire packages as well as other truck accessories. “That’s kind of a little niche thing for us,” McHenry said. Besides its impressive appearance, McHenry’s truck is an essential tool for a local business with multiple chains across Florida. Say your Mini needs new tires, so you bring it in to the Melbourne Gatto’s. The Melbourne branch may not have the right tires for a Mini, but the Palm Bay branch does. McHenry can drive to the Palm Bay branch and carry the tires back to you in the bed of his truck. “You’re not delayed at all, because, in the meantime, while I’m going to get the tires, we can get your car in the shop and start getting the old tires off,” McHenry said. In the meantime, I’m back with new tires from the other store.”

an cherishes the mother-daughter bond she has with her daughter, Kirsten, and credits the young woman as the reason she’s still alive. “My daughter saved my life,” Jan said. Kirsten kept noticing a spot on her mom’s face and would often say, “It looks like it could be cancer, Mom.” But Jan gave it no mind at first – until her daughter’s persistence prevailed. Jan eventually saw several doctors, one of them being Dr. Anil Dhople, a Health First oncologist. She was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, a cancer on the right side of her cheek. Jan would undergo surgery and received radiation treatment, but through it all, would always be thankful for her daughter. “‘Mom, I probably saved your life,’” Jan recalls her daughter saying. “And she did. My sweet girl, who shortly thereafter my diagnosis, lost her battle unexpectedly with liver complications at the tender age of 28.” Jan and her husband, Al, were devastated. During her road to recovery, Jan would often dabble with painting, but it took on a different meaning after losing her daughter and becoming a cancer survivor. Her therapy came in the form of illustrating poems and paintings on more than 100 slate stones. No two stones are the same on the front, with each one having a different picture or poem. The only similarity is what Jan puts on the back – her daughter’s name and initials. “To give her a memory, a memorial to her,” Jan said. Jan hopes the slate stone poems and paintings she gives to family, friends, neighbors and even her team of doctors, will help send a message. “When people have a positive outlook, they’ll find out that they could have a positive result in their fight against cancer and anything else they encounter in life,” Jan said. 62 : SPAC E COA ST L IV IN G | S PAC ECOA ST L I V I N G .CO M

hen Alice’s granddaughter grew frustrated about making mistakes while knitting blankets, the hospice volunteer explained it wasn’t perfection that made these items special – these “love stitches” gave each pattern a personal touch, making them unique and heartfelt. Now, these beautifully imperfect knitted blankets and shawls are gifted to Hospice of Health First
through Love Stitches, a group of volunteers who painstakingly create the items. The Hospice team immediately knew what an impact this loving handmade touch would mean for terminally ill patients. “Some of our patients were knitters in the past, and when they receive a handmade item, it means the world to them,” shared Susan, volunteer services coordinator with Hospice of Health First. “I have also had several veteran patients cry when we handed them a red, white and blue knitted blanket. It’s very moving to witness. I am so glad that we are able to do this for our families.” To date, Love Stitches has created more than 70 “fidget blankets” for Alzheimer’s patients, designed to sooth the fidgeting of individuals suffering from memory loss. The volunteer effort has also given patients more than 500 blankets and shawls, including red, white and blue blankets honoring our veterans during pinning ceremonies. Hospice and Love Stitches have also provided more than 250 handmade aprons and bibs to male and female patients to preserve their dignity in facility settings. “Hospice is a very high-touch field, and the ability for our clinicians to access these special labors of love means the world to us and the families we serve,” Susan said. or many, parents serve as first role models. Many grow up to adopt their parents’ more personal attributes, while others adopt their more professional ones, even finding themselves working in the same field. As a younger child, Dr. Steven Schmid spent a great amount of time at work with his father, Dr. Rick Schmid. And now, Steven also works in dentistry, often collaborating with his father to better serve their patients. Dr. Rick Schmid has been practicing oral and maxillofacial surgery in Melbourne for the last 37 years. “When I was a kid, I was fascinated by medicine. I had a good influence with orthodontics, and I wanted to be an 64 : S PAC E COA ST L IV IN G | S PAC ECOA ST L I V I N G .CO M
orthodontist until I got to dental school and discovered that I didn’t like bending wires,” said Rick. “But I was fascinated by anesthesia and surgery and I was a general dentist for four years before I decided to enter a surgical residency.” When asked about what has kept him practicing dentistry for so long, Rick said: “Well, first of all, I love it. My parents taught me that if you pursue a passion, and choose that as your profession, you’ll never work a day in your life, and that’s the way I feel. “On a more personal basis, my father had multiple sclerosis, and he had to retire when he was 40. He would give anything to work as long as I have,” continued Rick. “So

that made a difference in me – I never get tired of going to work.” His son, Dr. Steven Schmid, followed his passion as well, and has been practicing prosthodontics since 2017. “My siblings and I all worked for [our dad] in high school, and when I realized the blood didn’t bother me I thought, ‘maybe I can do this,’ and being my dad’s son, I was kind of cocky and I was thinking, ‘well if he can do it I can do it, too,’” Steven joked. “But when I got into dental school, that’s when I realized that he makes it look really easy and it’s not, and I realized that I didn’t give him enough credit – he’s a phenomenal surgeon. Now that I’m here, I enjoy working with him.”
foundation, and I build a house on that foundation. Most of what he does is not as visible – he’s placing the implants in the bone, and then I place the teeth on, so we complement each other.” Steven continued to say that an added strength to their professional relationship is their personal one. The two talk as father and son every day, and they talk about patients all the time, so they are always collaborating, communicating and staying as up to date as possible in order to provide their patients with the highest quality of care. “We learn so much about each other’s specialties, too,” continued Steven. “I feel like my surgical knowledge is broadening because he teaches me so much.”
Though the two focus on different specialties and work in different practices, the father-son team often has the opportunity to work together and oversee the same patients in different stages of their care.
“It’s a two-way street,” added Rick. “I’ve learned so much about prosthodontics. There are things where I just say, ‘leave it to Steven, he can take care of it and do it better than I can.’”
“Probably, the best way to explain it would be, I do all the surgery, he does all the reconstruction,” said Rick. “So, I’m responsible for: placement of implants, bone surgery, removal of teeth, reconstructive surgery, and then, anytime the dentition is restored – I don’t do any sort of crowns or bridges or fillings or anything – he does all of that.”
“He is doing all the latest stuff,” said Steven about his father. “Even though he’s getting up there in age, he’s not slowing down and he’s better than ever – it’s amazing. I hope to be doing the same thing.”
“One of the analogies I like to us is that, if you’re building a house, you need a really strong foundation,” shared Steven. “He does the surgical side, which is basically building the

Baer’s The Choice for Coastal and Island Style
O
ften when searching for the right furniture and styles for your home one must choose between the trendy or the overly traditional. Baer’s, the family-owned furniture retailer which has set the standard in the Florida market, counters this choice, with classic, well-built furnishings that will remain in style for years to come. At the center of their portfolio is Tommy Bahama Home. In the Sunshine State, where the coastal and island styles reign, the popularity of Tommy Bahama is well known, as it perfectly represents these classic and highly contemporary vibes through collections that furnish both the inside and outside of the home. “Tommy Bahama remains by far the strongest brand in Florida,” says Larry Baer, vice president of west coast operations for the 16-store premier furniture chain. The store is the world’s largest dealer of Tommy Bahama Home. More than just a brand, Tommy Bahama is representative of an aspirational and idyllic way of life. One that is casual, unhurried and elegant. Although each collection is unique, they share a common thread of ultimate craftmanship.

Tommy Bahama Home Island Estate Bedroom
All of Tommy Bahama Home’s collections of distinctive furnishings evoke a sense of romance through the fusion of eclectic design, exotic natural materials and rich finishes. Tommy Bahama’s Island Estate collection is a perfect example. Infused with a rich blending of natural materials like woven abaca and lampakanai, coco shell, penn shell, leather-wrapped bamboo and woven rattan, Island Estate blends effortlessly with the Noche Black, Cilantro Green and Sangria Red accent finishes, while signature island fabrics capture the sense of the outdoors. Ocean Club from Tommy Bahama offers a fresh contemporary interpretation of island living that draws its inspiration from islands of the Pacific Rim. Natural materials like woven rattan, crushed bamboo, travertine and etched sea glass add character and authenticity, while correlated fabrics feature a color palette of linen-white textures with dramatic splashes of color.

Proudly Celebrating Twenty Years on the Space Coast! From our humble beginnings as a small mortgage lending arm of a midwestern bank to our life today as a retail subsidiary of Top 20 national mortgage lender NewRez, Shelter Mortgage has grown considerably over the years. While the company may have grown, we’ve never forgotten that our focus in this community has always been to help put families into homes. And in the last twenty years we’ve done just that, helping thousands of Space Coast families achieve the dream of homeownership – many for the very first time. Whether you are a first-time homebuyer, an experienced homeowner or an empty-nester, our loan professionals can get you there! And now as then, our goal is to get your loan approved, closed and funded as quickly as we can – and make your loan process as seamless as possible. So, as we celebrate our twentieth anniversary, we just want to reach out and say “thank you” to our builder partners, our realtors and of course, our borrowers for embracing us and making us a part of your family. We look forward to the next twenty years!

Villa Lucca Grande
DiPrima Custom Homes
W
hen you have been building custom homes for almost sixty years, there is a sense of quality and craftsmanship, which becomes synonymous with your brand and as differentiating as a fine wine. Joe DiPrima founded DiPrima Custom Homes in 1961, when America was looking aspirationally to putting men on the Moon. His company, and his signature homes, have been a part of the area’s evolution from Apollo to the Space Shuttle and now to SpaceX and Blue Origin, along with the evolution of home designs that incorporate the latest in lifestyle technology. “We have always attracted discriminating buyers, who valued the opportunity to personalize their home, while working with a company that provides concierge like service throughout the home building process,” DiPrima said.” Still actively involved in the company, he went on to comment that purchasing a home is one of the biggest investments people make. Therefore, providing clients with a relational connection to a team of professionals, that are responsive and accessible, is what has built the DiPrima legacy. Some of his team have been with him over 30 years, and many over 20, causing him to look to them like family.

This year’s Showcase Home, Villa Lucca Grande, is a beautiful example of the DiPrima portfolio. With over 3,000 square feet of masterfully designed spaces, featuring lofty ceilings and attention to detail in everything, from the elegant Pompeii quartz kitchen countertops and dramatic bathroom features, to the spacious rooms,
BREVARD’S PREMIER POOL BUILDER SINCE 1992
all leading to a luxurious pool enclosure. Whether entertaining or just lounging around the pool and summer kitchen, this home is designed for the finest Florida experience. Villa Lucca Grande is one of serval DiPrima homes located in the preserve like setting of St. Andrews Manor. Just off the Pineda Causeway, the development provides direct access east to the beaches or west to I-95 and the Viera community. The Manor perfectly balances the secure and secluded ambiance one looks for in a neighborhood, along with access to all the personal and professional amenities that makes Central Brevard both convenient and unique.

“When I came to the area, just about everyone was in their 30s or 40s. It was unusual to see someone with grey hair,” DiPrima said. “Today, there is a great mix of retirees discovering the Space Coast, along with the steady influx of young professionals with, or planning to start, a family. Once again, it is an exciting time to be here and we are glad to be a part of the next chapter of the story of the Space Coast.”

Great communities have a sense of place. A place where just being there is an experience, coupled with limitless options of things to do. A place where amenities and ambiance produce an environment that blends created and natural locations that the mind finds inviting and friends enjoy together. Few communities have achieved that illusive quality like Viera.

Viera Defining What a Community Can and Should Be One of the most celebrated master planned communities in the country, Viera sits at the geographical heart of the county, with convenient access to beaches, Orlando, the Melbourne high-tech corridor and Kennedy Space Center. An incredible mix of residential neighborhoods, The Avenue Viera, one of the most attractive shopping areas in the region, along with the county government, school board and judicial centers, all connected by a masterfully

This amazing community, that is bordered on the west by the St. John’s River and the 5,300 acre Viera Wilderness Park, is also home to the beautiful Duran Golf Club and Development Center. On any weekend you will find Little League baseball or soccer teams for all ages, playing at the spacious Viera Regional Park or people visiting the
The Viera Difference “Viera is different from other communities in Brevard, in Florida and the nation due to its adherence to a core vision and commitment to all stakeholders to continually evolve and enhance our community,” Scott Miller, Viera’s senior vice president of sales and community development, said. Then added, “The fact that
Viera has a single developer, with a heritage of land stewardship, shows in how we develop. [The Viera Company is a subsidiary of the sixth-generation, family owned, agricultural firm A. Duda & Sons.] In addition, with so many committed and long-term employees, we have been able to maintain our commitment to our core beliefs.” Todd Pokrywa the president of The Viera Company described the process that goes into the community’s planning and development. “We are very deliberate to ensure that each new element is positioned to add value to both what we have done and what we plan to do next. We continue to seek out best practices from across the country to innovate, as the community embarks on its next phases of development,” he said. Today, the community of Viera has evolved in providing a greater mix of product types and uses, which enhances its desirably and has led to the community being consistently ranked within the top 25 bestselling master planned communities in the country during the last several years. Today, Viera is home to over 27,000 residents, more than 12,000 homes and 10,000 plus employees, working in approximately 725 businesses. Yet, the community is not even halfway built out, after celebrating the 30th anniversary of Viera’s groundbreaking last year.

Addison Village Club
8150 STADIUM PARKWAY, VIERA, FL 32901
Like most amenities The Viera Company includes in its master-planned community of Viera, the state-of-the-art Addison Village Club is a complete reimagination of a community club complex. Typically, when someone thinks of a neighborhood clubhouse it is a place where residents can hold special events, like a wedding shower, or gather to play bridge. Instead, this is an exceptional amenities center focused on providing social, lifestyle, athletic, and recreational activities for its members. The Clubhouse boasts a multi-million dollar, 9,025 SF building, which includes meeting rooms, a social area, a gymnasium, and a catering kitchen with an adjacent 2,743 SF veranda, beautifully situated on a 10 acre plus campus. Families and friends can lounge at the leisure pavilion, have a birthday party at the family pavilion, or wait for their game to start at the tennis pavilion, which is next to six tennis courts with shaded, stadium

If relaxation is your goal, just sit back on one of the luxurious daybeds that are provided for your comfort. There is something for everyone such as the Club’s indoor gymnasium for group exercise classes, basketball, volleyball, pickleball and badminton, or get outside to play on its croquet lawn, two outdoor pickleball courts, and two bocce ball courts, all with benches and shade covers. Daniel Waite, who is the Club’s Lifestyle Director, says he wants to bring a lot of family-oriented programs to the facility. “I want everyone to come and have a sense of ownership of the facility,” he said. “I want neighbors to get involved.” All eligible homeowners within Addison Village, as well as other approved license holders, have access to use and enjoy the Club.

ave you ever met someone who seemed like a force of nature? One of those rare individuals whose drive and enthusiasm raises everyone’s game, like a thermostat raises the temperature in a room. Meili Viera was described by her business associate and the owner of Waterman Real Estate, Andy Waterman, saying, “She is like a breath of fresh air, that lightens up the room every time she walks in. She is extremely smart, caring and probably the most driven woman I’ve ever known.”

It is a sentiment shared by most of her business associates. But, when the veil is pulled back, there is always a story of perseverance and intelligence, of taking chances and of helping other people realize their dreams, that is the underpinning of people like Meili. As the 19th century philosopher and writer Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Without ambition one starts nothing. Without work one finishes nothing. The prize will not be sent to you. You have to win it.” Her journey began in Cuba, under a communist regime, until the age of seven. It was a system, as she describes it, “Where shortages and rationing were the norm and the people were controlled by fear.” But her parents ensured she was able, even at that young age, to separate the truth from the daily diet of propaganda. Her father escaped the island nation on a raft and was followed by her maternal grandfather, who was granted political asylum here, along with her mother, grandmother, sister and Meili herself. |

Her family eventually moved to the west coast of Florida and as a senior in high school, she had her first exposure to the industry where she would make her mark. “I was doing dual enrollment and I met a woman who told me I had the type of skills and personality that would do well in real estate,” Meili said. She interviewed with a family-owned brokerage, run by a mother and daughter, at a time when the market was very hot. They managed a number of seasonal and annual rentals, and on the first day she was given a stack of leases to review and was thrown into the deep end of the pool. But Meili found that in business she was as at home in the water as Michael Phelps. She could be rental agent and property manager, at that time, without a license and soon was managing that side of the business. Meili developed finely-honed people and communication skills, as she was dealing with clients migrating to Florida from all over the U.S., whose first reaction was, “What do you know, you are my granddaughter’s age?” Then, when the market dropped, she learned how the rental side could carry a brokerage through lean times, while she also becoming an expert in foreclosures and short sales. By the time she graduated from college she had her real estate license and more experience than most agents have in a lifetime.
a sign from heaven.” Though she added that her name was part of her Iberian, not Slovak, heritage. Describing her early impressions, she said, “I loved the beaches, especially that no matter where you live, you aren’t far from the ocean or the water and the area had so much potential.” Meili was not sure real estate was where she would stay professionally, but felt it was a good time to explore her options.
I was, in most cases, the youngest and usually the only woman in the room, at regional commercial real estate seminars,” Meili said. At one in Orlando, a man came up to her and said, ‘Who are you? Then added, ‘We won’t see you next year.’ She was there the next year and the next, though she was not sure if he was, and she was sure to look for him.
Spreading Her Wings
As she was finishing her MBA, she realized she had always lived and worked where she grew up and decided to move east to the Space Coast. “When I got here, I discovered one of the most vibrant communities shared my last name,” she recalled. “Then, when I found out that in Slovak, ‘Viera’ meant ‘faith,’ I was excited and took it as 28 SPACE COAST BUSINESS

It was the commercial side of the market that attracted her interest next – particularly shopping centers – which led her to begin exploring how marketing and leasing of commercial property was done. Serendipitously, she came across an add on Craigslist, of all places, for a manager of five Publix shopping centers and sent in her resume. An owner from New York needed someone in the area to manage their properties and flew her to New York for an interview and then hired her. At the time, their vacant inventory was at more than 50 percent, and much like her initial foray into rental property, it was a learn as you go experience, with a seasoned mentor. She developed a business plan, joined several leads groups, like the Chambers, who could connect her with the type of small business owners they wanted to work with as tenants. Thus, began her relationship with Juster Development. Today her properties are almost 100% occupied.
“I was, in most cases, the youngest and usually the only woman in the room, at regional commercial real estate seminars,” Meili said. At one in Orlando, a man came up to her and said, ‘Who are you? Then added, ‘We won’t see you next year.’ She was there the next year and the next, though she was not sure if he was, and she was sure to look for him. For the next three years she focused exclusively on the commercial side of the business.
Strategic Partnership

In 2015 as the real estate market began to grow again, Meili began working with a group that was buying, remodeling and then selling homes and she was their exclusive agent. As word spread that she was involved in investment deals, she attracted more investment parties. By 2017 she found a new professional home with Waterman Real Estate. “I really admired what Andy had done in the community. A second-generation business that embodied all the values that were important to me and gave me the flexibility to pursue the commercial management, investment and home transactions that I wanted to be involved in,” she said. To Waterman’s credit, he admired her drive, her vision and endorsed her pursuit of her broker’s license and earning a second master’s degree in real estate development.
Meili found that in business she was as at home in the water as Michael Phelps.
