hen asked to think about, “aspirational living,” many different images came to my mind. A Tesla would be nice, and so would a private jet. At the end of the day, however, I think the aspirational life for many – myself included – simply involves a house to call home and time to travel with loved ones. After all, some of the best memories are made in the home and on the road, right?
We’ve also included some travel pieces to help you plan your next big adventure. I was fortunate enough to take one of these getaways, and let me just say, if I could ask for one thing in life, it would be to afford the opportunity to travel a few times each year. Exploring new cities never gets old. And, how can one not love weekends filled with calorie-dense food and fruity cocktails? Living an aspirational life means treating ourselves every now and then.
As this month was our special home issue, we tried to focus on those whose services help you create a more functional and comfortable living space. Maintaining a home is a full-time job, so we wanted to help make the job a bit easier. Your home should be more than just a place to sleep; your home should be your sanctuary, your safe-haven and your point of inspiration.
All jokes aside, I hope this issue is both inspiring and grounding. We don’t have to be multi-millionaires to live aspirational lives. With some light reading and a little elbow grease, we can have everything we could ever need. So, plan that fresh paint job you’ve been putting off, or finally pick a weekend for you and your friends to get away. That life you’ve been dreaming of is waiting right outside your door.

WHY GO INTO WORK? CREATING A BEAUTIFUL, YET FUNCTIONAL, HOME OFFICE INTRODUCTION BY SARA SANTORA MANAGING EDITOR TIPS BY HARMONY LYNN GOODSON CONTRIBUTOR
T
he demand for remote work has significantly increased over the last decade. According to a 2018 article on remote.co, “More than 50% of people who telecommute part-time said they wanted to increase their remote hours … and 60% of remote workers in the survey said that if they could, they would leave their current job for a full-time remote position at the same pay rate.” Additionally, the article states that many young professionals in both the United States and Europe have “leveraged the use of technology to work remotely and live a nomadic lifestyle.” With these statistics in mind, it would be no shock to me that a number of you who are reading this work from home in some capacity, whether it be full-time, part-time or even one day a week. Studies have shown that the ability to work from home increases productivity and creativity. But, just as sitting at a desk in a dimly-lit office isn’t inspiring, setting up at your kitchen counter may not be the best place for those wanting a long-term, remote career. It is important to have a space that is both organized and creative. You don’t want a space that is too reminiscent of the office walls from which you are trying to escape. However, you do want a space you can call your own; a place that will allow you to focus on the day of work ahead.

6 : SPACE COA ST L IV IN G H O M E | S PAC ECOA ST L I V I NG.CO M
I reached out to local photographer and content creator, Harmony Lynn Goodson, to ask for her tips in creating a beautiful, yet functional, space. She shared with us a variety of ways in which you can create a space that is perfect for work, as well as comfortable and personal. So, get to reading and then get to work! Your home office isn’t going to create itself.
4. Buy furniture for your home, not your office Opt for a nontraditional table and desk chair like this small dining table and velvet side chairs.
5. Conceal unattractive items Hide printers and cables in closed, backless cabinets and attach wires to the backs of table legs. Organize supplies, papers, and bills in decorative boxes, baskets and totes.
6. The kid stuff Keep adult items on higher shelves and kid-friendly supplies in easy-to-transport buckets on the lower shelves. Display kid art by hanging a few current pieces on a pin board and storing the rest in a kid designated cabinet space.
7. The finishing touch 1. The Look
Bring life to any space with house plants appropriate to your lighting conditions. Don't go overboard on the desk accessories.
Consider the overall flow of your home. Is the space visible from other rooms? Design your space with an overall style and color theme and stick to it, from the wall color to the accessories, for a well put together aesthetic.
2. Functionality Build and arrange your office furniture with the whole family in mind. Who will be using this space? Do you need more than one chair? Do you want it to be more of a social atmosphere or a private working area? Allow for ample storage by adding large shelves or built-ins for every member of the house.
3. Keep it contained Ditch the stuff you don't use and keep the office clutter from spilling into other spaces of your home. FA LL 2019: 7

or a company that’s been in business for as long as Hippo Roofing has, there are three paths down which it can go; the business can grow, the business can shrink, or the business can hit its peak and then plateau. Fortunately, for Hippo Roofing, the business is experiencing tremendous growth. Hippo Roofing’s signage has been a signature of US 1 for years. Though the roofing company will be remaining on US 1, Hippo Roofing will be taking its sign and moving it up the road, where it will adorn the building of the Roofing Center of Brevard. The Roofing Center of Brevard will be a 13,000 square foot service building complete with metal, shingle, tile, solar and metal fabrication services, among other roofing needs you may require. This new center will not only house Hippo Roofing, but also Pit Crew Roofing & Repair, Roofing Inc. and Metal Roof Outlet. The idea behind the operation is to provide the people of the Space Coast with any service they may need, under one roof (no pun intended). “Before [the Roofing Center], we were in two separate buildings,” shared Bill Stillwell, owner of Hippo Roofing. “To have people separated is an issue, so I decided to acquire all this space. For Hippo Roofing, the main goal was to have every member of its team together in one building. With the Roofing Center, that goal is being far surpassed.

I drove over to the new center to meet with Stillwell and talk more about the new operations. Before giving me too much detail, he took me on a grand tour of the center, and I was both shocked and impressed by just how large the building was. The first area that Stillwell showed me was, what will be, the training area. He explained that there will be a whiteboard, circular tables and a television set up for those coming into train, whether it be for production, sales or any other department within the roofing company. He then took me to see the manufacturing area. This manufacturing area will contain large machines that will be Imperial Cocoa setup to build, “Metal hip and ridge; valley; and drip edge and all that kind of stuff,” shared Stillwell. “So, we’ll produce that ourselves.”

under one roof. After all, aren’t these companies competitors? “We do mostly repairs whereas [Hippo Roofing] is mostly metal,” shared Brittany Cherup. “I’d say, 20% of the time we duplicate each other, the other 80% of the time we’re bidding on different things, so it never really matters.” Cherup and Stillwell explained that, though they share a familial relationship, the businesses have no relationship to each other. This, coupled with the fact that the specialties of the companies overlap, allows this whole operation to run smoothly. “[The building] really helps the customers,” continued Cherup. “When people call and I can’t help them, I can send them [Hippo Roofing’s] way. I’d rather send a client to someone who is reputable than someone I don’t know.” With her comments in mind, I began to understand the convenience of having one building out of which companies of different specialties can operate. If the roofing company you first go to can’t help, that’s okay! They can send you down the hall to somebody who can. Owning a home and making repairs is time consuming enough, this roofing center takes some of that stress off your back. It truly was remarkable to see that every member of the Hippo team, as well as every member of the other teams, all operate out of this building. From accounting and sales, to marketing and production, this building is packed full of specialists who can help you decide what’s best. Of course, the building wasn’t initially set up to host this wide variety of people. Stillwell shared with me that, upon moving in, the building was very “industrial.” So, he and his team had to spend over a month remodeling the interior. “We had walls to build, doors to find, layouts to do … all the things you have to do in order to make the building operational.” Hippo Roofing has also had to have equipment shipped from different parts of the country, which has required Stillwell to travel. Still, though the Hippo team has been working tirelessly on the new space, Hippo Roofing’s operations haven’t stopped. Clients will know that the team at Hippo Roofing has still been helping homeowners with their roofing needs. The center will have its grand opening in November around Veteran’s Day, an homage to the veteran-owned company. Until then, you can still count on Hippo Roofing to help you take care of your home.
You can find more information about Hippo Roofing at hipporoof.com. Call (321) 951-2500 for an estimate, and join them in November at 2774 N. Harbor City Blvd.

TRUST THE GARAGE EXPERTS BY ABBY McHENRY WRITER
H
aving a clean, functional home helps make the home more enjoyable. In general, garages do not seem to get the same attention that the rest of a home gets, yet they are equally important for storage purposes. Garages not only house cars but can also function as an extra storage unit for items that don’t have a place in main living areas. However, it is important to understand the difference between a garage and a storage unit. Yes, you can store excess furniture in your garage. But, if your garage can no longer house your vehicles, you may need to call an expert. Garage Experts of Brevard customizes your garage space to fit your individual needs, from flooring to storage space. Garage Experts is a national garage floor renovating company with a local branch in Brevard. According to Ryan Burke, owner of Garage Experts of Brevard, garages are often the last place people think of remodeling. The rest of the home comes first. “It’s a service that I think is important for customers that want a clean space [and] an extension of their living space,” Burke said. Our garages can become a place of stress and discomfort when they become filled with items with which we cannot part or for which we have no space. Because we don’t have basements in Florida, storage space is important, but we can’t let these spaces become too cluttered. Garage Experts can install cabinets to help you set your items aside and make way for your car. Burke said he spent many years in law enforcement and later was a director and consultant in retail. “I wanted to do something that I thought was a needed service in the community,” Burke said. Watching all the growth in Viera and the surrounding areas on the Space Coast convinced him that helping homeowners make better use of their garages was that needed service.
Photos provided by Garage Experts

Since your garage is an extension of your home, it should receive the same amount of attention as your living space. “I’m excited about what I do because we’re able to take somebody’s dirty, dusty garage and transform it into something beautiful,” Burke said. He
shared that the company loves being able to provide a tangible service for its customers, and he enjoys interacting with them; it is important to him that customers are happy and get a quality product for a great price. Burke says the service is custom, and drawings are provided for customers so they can see how the space will look before any installation begins. According to Burke, one of the most popular services Garage Experts of Brevard provides is epoxy flooring. HOMEBUYING WITH U.S. BANK INFORMATION FOR THE FIRST-TIME HOMEBUYER BY SARA SANTORA MANAGING EDITOR
B
loans the money and the servicer handles the daily functions of the loan once closed.” He continued, sharing that, “[The] easy way to think of this is the servicer is who you make payments to or call with questions.”
I reached out to Scott Cronenberg, Mortgage Sales Manager with U.S. Bank, to discuss everything we thought potential homebuyers should know. Though the process is time-consuming – as buying a home is one of the biggest investments you can make – Cronenberg and his team can help ease your stress and make the process as painless as possible. Some might even find the process to be an enjoyable one.
In some cases, as is the case with U.S. Bank, your lender will also be your servicer. According to Cronenberg, having two in one is “a great benefit” because “you know where your payment will go and who to call in the event of a question or an issue.”
uying a home can be an intimidating process, especially for a first-time homebuyer. There is a lot to think about, from determining your budget to deciding on the right loan, and the process can feel both overwhelming and time-consuming.
To get started, I wanted Cronenberg to explain to me the difference between a mortgage lender and a mortgage servicer, as you’ll encounter both when buying a home. He simply explained that, “A lender 16 : S PAC E COA ST L IV IN G H O M E | S PAC ECOA ST L I V I NG.CO M
With this understanding of the difference between a lender and a servicer, the first step in buying a home would be finding your lender. Cronenberg reminded me that, when finding a lender, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” So, do your research, ask around and always get a second opinion. But, once you’ve found your lender, the next thing
you’ll want to do is sit down and discuss your options. Cronenberg shared that this first conversation you’ll have is a “fact finding discussion.” Essentially, the lender will want to know more about your financial picture, goals and comfort level with payments, among other financial topics. Of course, all of this information helps the lender better understand you, the borrower. Don’t feel uncomfortable when speaking with your lender, because the more information you give, the more easily he or she can help meet your homebuying needs. “Anyone can input information into a website or app and get options,” said Cronenberg. “[U.S. Bank] believes the only way to give true guidance is to fully understand the borrower and his or her financial picture. This only happens by having a discussion and asking questions.” The second thing I wanted Cronenberg to clarify was the difference between pre-approval and prequalification. The difference is pretty simple. “A pre-qualification is when you provide information to a mortgage loan officer to review,” said Cronenberg. “Based on a review of the credit and documentation provided, the mortgage loan officer will determine if the borrower is qualified. “A pre-approval is when a file is submitted to an underwriter for formal credit approval,” continued Cronenberg. According to Cronenberg, a pre-qualification can be completed in an hour or less, whereas a pre-approval takes a few days, as it is a more detailed process.
Buying a home comes with many costs. Apart from the mortgage itself, Cronenberg reminded me that a homebuyer has to think about down payment, closing costs (appraisal, credit report, taxes, title insurance fees, etc.) and pre-paid items (homeowner’s insurance and escrow items for taxes and insurance). Before beginning the homebuying process, have money set aside. Buying a home doesn’t have to be scary. The most important thing you can do is find a trustworthy professional to help guide you through the process. “U.S. Bank has consistently been named one of the world’s most ethical companies,” shared Cronenberg. “Our staff of seasoned mortgage professionals will always take the time to do what is right for our customers. We pride ourselves on building a relationship, not on completing transactions.”

PERFECTING PAINT
COLORING THE WORLD ONE HOME AT A TIME BY SUSANNAH BOWMAN WRITER
E
veryone is passionate about something. Luckily, if you’re looking into painting your home or business, the owners behind Perfecting Paint are passionate about painting. Founded in 2015 by brothers Jaz and Samuel Rodriguez, Perfecting Paint has always been about being the best they can be. In 2015, the brothers and roommates were brainstorming different ways to make a paycheck. Samuel Rodriguez had been in the painting business, and Jaz Rodriguez had experience in marketing and sales. They wanted to combine their talents and decided to take a leap of faith. They quit their jobs on Friday and opened up Perfecting Paint on Monday. When I sat down with Jaz Rodriguez, he said the business was really about one thing: “Above all, we want quality.” Perfecting Paint makes sure that the houses and businesses they paint are painted to perfection, an apt cause for its namesake. Perfecting Paint wants to “color the world.” There are multiple reasons why people decide to paint their homes. Rodriguez says that many of Perfecting Paint’s clients have their interiors painted to change

up the overall feel of a room. Many have their exteriors painted to increase their home value, to sell their home or to get positive attention from the neighbors. Either way, your house ends up looking and feeling better, and you’ll feel better, too. Home trends come and go, but we all want our homes to look like the covers of our favorite home magazines. According to Rodriguez, the most popular color for home interiors in this area is lilac gray. Lighter than your average gray, this color adds a bit of drama and genderneutrality to a room. For exterior paint, Rodriguez says that browns or grays are the way to go. Desert beige and stormy gray are the “it” colors for 2019. If you’re looking for a sophisticated and classic coastal feeling, the pair recommends stormy gray with white trim. This variety of gray is the perfect way to stand out in the neighborhood. If you’re looking for something a little more laid back, consider desert beige. According to the Rodriguez brothers, desert beige is great choice for the exterior because it rarely looks dirty. As desert beige and the dirt upon which your house stands are both brown, the color will last for years. They also recommend adding white trim along with the desert beige to keep your home looking cool and classic for years to come. Painting is a great way to change up your home and increase its value. If you want to avoid the messy spills and backbreaking labor of painting yourself, call Perfecting Paint. They promise perfection every time.

SAFETY FIRST:
WHY ROOF REPAIRS AND RENOVATIONS ARE ALWAYS IMPORTANT BY ABBY McHENRY WRITER
Y
ou’ve probably grown up hearing the saying “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” But, what about taking preventative measures? Floridians know better than anyone that preventative measures are often necessary; we apply sunscreen to our skin and spend months preparing for hurricanes that may never come. If you’re a homeowner, you should also consider taking preventative measures when it comes to the roof over your head. Many people wait until their roof is leaking to make any kind of change. However, roof repair and replacement can change the appearance of your home and provide safety you may not have realized you were missing. So, if you’re reading this and are thinking it may be time to get a new roof, G&G Roofing Inc. can be the team to help. Ray Smith, founder and owner of G&G Roofing, started the business with his wife, Kristy in 2002. “We took it, and we ran with it,” Smith said about his dream of starting a business. “We never quit running.” The company offers residential, commercial and industrial roof services. Smith said a typical roof is due for repair after 20 years, and warning signs can vary based on the weather a roof experiences. In Florida, we experience many thunderstorms, hurricanes and more recently, hailstorms. 2 0 : S PAC E COA ST L IV I N G H O M E | S PAC ECOA ST L I V ING.CO M
Leaks are an obvious warning sign that roof repairs are necessary and are the most common reason homeowners look into replacing a roof, though, the roof could have been updated years prior. In addition to leaks, there can be granule loss, rocks coming off shingle roofs and other signs of breakage. So, if you are encountering any of these problems, or think your roof is coming up on its lifespan, it’s time to call in an expert. Smith said when hiring a roofing company, you should check if they are licensed and insured, and should do general research to see what their reputation is. “Reputation is always best, especially today with the internet, social media, reviews, Angie’s List [and] Google,” Smith said. “There’s so much stuff on there.” Smith said prior to that you would just have to ask around from friends for recommendations. Now, you can do your own research and find your best fit. When talking about his company, Smith emphasized the importance of always doing the best job, and consistently providing quality service to customers. He says that for him, it is not about getting more business, but more about getting around to everyone while still providing a highquality service. Even though storms can lead to more
business, having a good reputation for providing a highquality service is even more important for Smith. “We were
Ray Smith and his children were featured on the cover of the June 2019 issue of Space Coast LIVING
who we were before the storm work came, and we will be who we are after the storm work as well,” Smith said about providing quality repairs and renovations with or without harsh weather seasons. Prior to hurricane season and other extreme weather catastrophes, Smith said people ask more questions about the company’s records and reputation, almost like an interview. He said they would ask things like “how long have you been in business, what are your warranties, do you have any references” etc. “You come in the storms and none of that matters,” Smith said. “It’s ‘How fast can you do it?’ ‘How soon can you get to it’?” When storms come around, for many customers, it becomes more about getting the job done as quickly as possible rather than checking on the company’s records and reputation. Keeping one’s family safe with a roof over their heads becomes priority number one. When asked about the hardest part of his job, he said, “There is no ‘hardest part,’ because I love what I do and wouldn’t change my job for anything.” “Good or bad, 10 times out of 10 we’ll always do what is right,” Smith said about why people should choose G&G. Smith said he has two families: the family that he goes home to and the family he works with.

etting breast cancer is devastating to any woman. So, imagine getting it twice. Mary, a teacher, wife and mom of three, was religious about regular checkups and mammograms after beating breast cancer 20 years ago. When she was diagnosed with the disease again, she felt hopeless. After undergoing a double mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation, Mary said she accepted she would never be the same. She felt like she would be deformed for the rest of her life. She remembers thinking, “that was the
price I had to pay to be alive.”
Soon, her attitude began to shift.
But then, in Mary’s words, came “divine intervention.” She dubbed Health First Medical Group’s Dr. George Collis, a plastic surgeon, and his nurse, Janet, “the most compassionate, caring and kind professionals.”

ine Art: people travel the world to see it. From Picasso and Van Gogh, to Pollock and Matisse, there seems to an innate desire in so many of us to see beautiful artwork up close and in person. Though there are those whose work will never go out of style, the artistic landscape is constantly changing, and every day there are new artists who are being recognized and celebrated. It may often feel as though we have to travel to major metro areas to find this artistic talent; however, I’ve learned that with a little research, fine art can be found anywhere. Tucked away on Pineapple Ave. in the Eau Gallie Arts District lies Erika Masterson’s fine art photography gallery. Her gallery is a converted, Florida style home that she shares with her husband, who runs an audio company. Inside you’ll find, not only her artwork, but also his audio equipment. It’s a creative space in where fine art, technology and music are Erika Masterson with her piece "Abundance" combined. Though so much is taking place inside this space, Masterson’s work still stands out. Her art takes on a dreamlike or fantasy-like quality, and as an observer, it is easy to get lost in the beauty of it all. I sat down with Masterson to discuss her work and the inspiration behind it.
children and families. When they eventually moved back to Florida to be closer to their parents, she maintained her business and grew a large clientele here on the Space Coast. As a younger girl, her father taught her how to shoot and process film. Though she shot film throughout the years, she began to use it less and less as her portrait business – which required the use of her digital camera – took over. It wasn’t until seven years ago that she began to put film back on the forefront and begin making her art. At this time, Masterson was asked to teach a photography workshop at her alma mater in Daytona. She had never taught a workshop before, so she bounced ideas back and forth, unsure of what to teach. She finally decided to teach image blending, as this was something she knew well and had, at one point, loved to do. Masterson also shared that, “I had a spiritual awakening. God showed me how to see in a way I couldn’t see before.” With her awakening and re-found love for image blending, she began to create art.

to be used because it’s done in the dark. With film, there is deep anticipation with the prize that awaits when you look at processed film. When something takes longer to make, the excitement builds. Also, when something doesn’t come out right, there is a bigger disappointment. But this is part of what makes it so great. It strengthens and increases patience. For me, there’s a deeper reward for the perseverance of the process.” Masterson’s work is, in my opinion, the very definition of fine art. And others seem to agree. Earlier this year, Masterson became a 2019 international portfolio competition winner. She shared that friends and family had been telling her for years to show her work in New York. While she wanted to do so, she was waiting for the opportunity to arise. Former photography teacher, Mrs. Whiteside, contacted Masterson and told her about the portfolio competition. Masterson said, “I know that if they could just see my work in person, they would accept me.” She got that chance and won, and she received her own exhibit for her collection, “Tangled up in Beauty,” in the Soho Photo Gallery from April-May.

Masterson’s husband bought her tickets to attend two workshops she had been eyeing. For whatever reason, she couldn’t attend either of the workshops; however, as the old adage goes, when one door closes, another opens. A workshop in Cape Cod with artist Makoto Fujimura appeared, and Masterson was hand-selected to attend. Here, he taught the art of Nihonga, which is an artform that involves oyster shell pigments. Essentially, Masterson shared that you learn to crush the shells into a powder and combine it with a special glue. They learned, not only how to make it, but how to paint with it, and Masterson decided she wanted to use this as part of her original art. “[The oyster shell] is a very pearlescent white,” shared Masterson. “The oyster shell comes through whatever it is you layer on top, and the neat thing is that it does whatever it wants. Sometimes it shows, sometimes it doesn’t.” She shared that she had the idea to add a golden-bronze to the oyster shell, which is where her artwork gets its signature shimmer. While all of these fine details come together to make a beautiful, unique image, the main focal point of her work is the film photograph. I asked her to tell me the difference between film and digital photography, as well as why she was drawn more to film as an artist, and she had this to say: “I’m drawn to more than the final image: it’s the process that moves me. It’s the making of, not just a beautiful image but a luminous negative. With film, there’s a trust that takes place. A trust with myself that I get the correct exposure and a trust in the processing. Intuition through feel has
“I create art from my heart, and I create art from God and for God … it’s a spiritual thing for me,” shared Masterson. “I believe He orchestrated this whole thing for me, and He has a much bigger plan than I could ever fathom for what I’m going to do.”

DANCE
DREAMS IN MOTION SPACE COAST BALLET COMPANY CONNECTS THE COMMUNITY THROUGH CLASSICAL DANCE
I
t started in an orphanage in Russia. In 2010, two dancers from the Mariinsky Ballet, Russia’s infamous classical ballet company, visited a home for orphans in St. Petersburg. There, a young boy approached them and declared it was his dream to dance at the Mariinsky Theatre. Growing up in an orphanage, the boy did not have access to the training that would have qualified him for Vaganova Ballet Academy, arguably the world’s most prestigious dance school and, at that time, the sole pathway to the Mariinsky Ballet. The two dancers, Ekaterina Schelkanova and Anton Boytsov, were touched by this meeting. The boy’s story inspired them to create Open World Dance Foundation, a project to connect dancers from around the world to the training, philosophy, and overall experience of classical Russian ballet. Flash forward to almost a decade later and over six thousand miles away. After the Mariinsky, Schelkanova and Boytsov danced in well-known companies across the world before finding their way to Melbourne, Florida. There, they encountered a diverse community just waiting to be enriched by classical ballet.
BY HEATHER MOTRO JUNIOR ASSISTANT EDITOR
Community Company It didn’t take long for Schelkanova and Boystov to realize that the local Space Coast Ballet Company’s nonprofit mission and community-centered approach made it the perfect match for a collaboration with Open World Dance Foundation. The two dancers recently took on the role of artistic directors at SCBC. Space Coast Ballet Vice Chair Loretta Grella emphasizes that, unlike most dance companies, SCBC is not a studio. That means that rather than growing a following of students, the company’s corps de ballet (all the dancers that don’t perform solos) is entirely comprised of volunteers. Instead of holding classes in a facility, SCBC rents out spaces for training. And, most important to Grella, Space Coast Ballet is not a business. “It’s really about the community,” explains Grella. “All the money doesn’t go to the owners, but back into the community.”

Giving Back with Ballet
Many serious ballerinas dream of training at the esteemed Vaganova Ballet Academy in Russia but attaining a spot at the coveted school is about as likely as making it to the NBA, especially for non-Russians. Each year, the SCBC and Open World Dance Foundation collaboration helps to make the dream come true for eight chosen dancers.
Children in low-income families would not normally have the opportunity to go watch a ballet or take a dance class, but SCBC is committed to bringing ballet to everyone. Money from SCBC fundraisers goes towards buying tickets to The Nutcracker for students of Title I schools. In addition, SCBC teachers and board teach workshops at the schools, where they give students the foundations of ballet, from history to positions to basic moves.
First, Schelkanova and Boytsov audition a wide range of young (15-20 years old) ballerinas. In keeping with the Foundation’s original mission to provide the opportunity of ballet training to everyone regardless of their situation, these dancers come from all backgrounds and all corners of the United States. Some are found at summer ballet intensives, while others reach out themselves after learning of the reputations of both Space Coast Ballet and Open World Dance Foundation. They all share one thing in common: a devotion to dance. After a rigorous audition process, Schelkanova and Boytsov handpick only eight ballerinas to participate in a special exchange program. Six months out of the year, the dancers live together in a house in Merritt Island. They train for 5 hours every day, completing school online when they’re not dancing. For the remainder of the year, their home is St. Petersburg, Russia and their school is Vaganova Ballet Academy. In addition to studying ballet at the institution where Russian ballet as we know it began, the girls learn Russian language and culture under the tutelage of Schelkanova.
The Nutcracker By the end of the year, the dancers are prepared to join the world’s top companies. But first, they take on roles in a show closer to home: Space Coast Ballet's production of The Nutcracker. While the eight ballerinas will perform in lead parts, the rest of the show is performed by local volunteers who auditioned in August. After months of rehearsal, it’s hard to believe that these volunteer dancers are not members of a full-time dance company! SCBC's The Nutcracker brings together three icons of the Space Coast: the talented Space Coast Ballet, the elegant King Center and the breathtaking Brevard Symphony Orchestra, which will provide Tchaikovsky's music live on the night of the show. For the SCBC Board of Directors, it seemed only right that world-class dancing should be accompanied by a fully professional live orchestra. The December 7th show is sure to be unforgettable.
What’s next? "Our goal is to give scholarships," Grella says. Chosen students would be able to pick any ballet school in the area, and SCBC would pay their full tuition. Of course, Grella concedes, SCBC has to raise enough money first. They're determined to do so, in honor of that little boy in Russia and so many others who dream to dance.

HELPING MAKE HOMES HAPPEN: BOBBIE DYER AND THE PERSONAL TOUCH OF DYER MORTGAGE [ By Eric Wright, Publisher ]
H
ave you ever called a help line and, after the fourth or fifth question posed by the automated voice, found yourself thinking, “I wish I could talk to a person?” We all appreciate and agree that technology has brought a host of wonderful advances. However, when it comes to a transaction as big as a home mortgage, Bobbie Dyer of Dyer Mortgage has found that what looks like a great online deal, in the long run, often costs you more in time and money. “Many people approach shopping for a mortgage like they were shopping for paper towels,” Dyer said. “Only they may spend more time on the paper towels. The difference is, you don’t get the personal involvement of someone who understands the industry and the area. A professional who can explain your options and your costs, while taking an interest in you as an individual, to customize your mortgage to match your needs.”
through the Regional Economic Information Network (REIN), serves as a Trustee at Florida Tech and sits on the board of the Health First Foundation.
Rising to the top, while challenging Goliath By the time Dyer was 15, she had developed a personal credo that, even today, rolls off her lips like the lyrics to a favorite song, “Other people can be smarter than me, richer than me and prettier than me. But they will NOT outwork me.” “Hard work is what got me to where I am today,” she said. “No matter what the job was, I made sure I did it all with as much effort as I could.” Dyer was a good student and found she was exceptionally autodidactic, along with being adept at financial math, with a good memory for details. These skills would provide advancement and opportunity for her business aspirations.
Dyer’s business model is a unique combination of A.I.- artificial intelligence, and what she refers to as, “L.I.- local intelligence.”
Dyer Mortgage began with a vision to alter the paradigm of the traditional mortgage business, which had not changed for decades. Dyer’s business model is a unique combination of A.I.- artificial intelligence, and what she refers to as, “L.I.-local intelligence.” A.I. gives clients the speed, convenience and vital feedback that is part of the 21st century loan process. But the crucial difference is adding to that local intelligence. They can provide insight about the market, while delving into the nuances of the individual’s situation.
This dual approach of A.I., having the most critical and up to date data and L.I., not only understanding local conditions, but taking the time to uncover the specific circumstances that can influence loan approval, from a recent divorce to being self-employed, is the differentiator. Which, underscores Dyer Mortgage’s ability to walk a customer through the mortgage process from start to finish. All of this is built on the work ethic which brought Dyer from a trailer park in rural Colorado and turned her into a business leader who advises the Federal Reserve
She got her first job in the mortgage industry typing closing documents for five dollars an hour. Her meticulous attention to detail and ability to make complex calculations began to catch people’s attention and soon, she was being trained to take on more and more responsibilities.
Moving to Melbourne, she landed a job as a loan officer at Great Western Bank. She transitioned to another bank, now owned by Chase, but made her real mark when she was recruited by Norwest, which was then acquired by Wells Fargo. She soon became a branch manager, while at the same time she integrated herself into the community as a volunteer. “They wanted me to be on the board of the museum at 24 years old and I told them, ‘I don’t have any money.’ They said, ‘That doesn’t matter, we know you’ll work.’” It is an ethos she continues today, by both working and giving, while offering her staff paid time to serve with non-profits or to volunteer. They also provide “Lunch & Learn” seminars to area businesses, bringing helpful information and education directly to people in their workplace. S EPT EMB ER 2 019

Running a branch was a perfect fit for Dyer’s skills and experience. She was with Wells Fargo for 18 years, building her branch from practically nothing, into having the number one market share in a company whose revenue last year was over $86 Billion, with assets at almost $1.9 Trillion. For several years, her branch was in the top 10 in the U.S., and she sat on significant committees with the bank and traveled throughout the country speaking and doing training seminars. Soon, however, Dyer noticed inconsistencies in the contracts loan officer’s compensation was based on, along with other practices that disturbed her. Like any good employee, she appealed to her bosses at Wells Fargo. However, their attitude was at first dismissive, then they offered her a personal payment to ignore the situation.
Unique & Boutique When Dyer closed that professional door, she opened another. Though she received a number of very lucrative offers, her dream was to build, what she described as, “a boutique mortgage company.” The parent company she works with, Primary Residential Mortgage, a privately held mortgage bank, gave her the opportunity to build a company that was truly “Customer centric, where I could guide the process,” she said. The relationship also brought the economy of scale of a large business.
“I tell my team, ‘They aren’t files, they are families.’”
Exasperated, she filed a class action lawsuit, which a federal judge settled out of court, in favor of Dyer and the other plaintiffs, for approximately $15 million, though she received only $2200 personally. “It was about the principal of the thing. Even the executive from Wells Fargo, who was in the final mediation with the judge and me, said he was unaware of the situation.” SPACE COAST B US INE S S
|
It was being able to build a business culture and to guide the client experience that Dyer wanted. “When you sit down with people and listen, there is a connection that often lasts a lifetime,” she said. “I wanted the customer to feel like they had someone who would guide them through the whole process and could advise or direct them, by considering their larger financial picture. I tell my team, ‘They aren’t files, they are families.’” Many of Dyer Mortgage’s clients come from personal referrals, along with local realtors and builders. They also created a Corporate Relocation Concierge Program that includes working directly with HR managers, relocation

companies, assisting the employee even before an offer letter is accepted and guiding them in every step of the journey. “There are too many uncertainties in this type of transaction for your only recourse to be a 1-800 number,” Dyer explained. “We have had sellers die right before a closing, along with a myriad of other situations, that could have derailed a purchase. It is such a complex process that people need a trusted guide.” Dyer’s vision was to be not only locally focused, but to have the authority to complete the loan process locally. She wanted to give expert advice with a loan customized to the client’s needs, not begin locally and then be transferred to a call center or to get preapproved online, only to find that when a person actually examined the documents, it was not approved. Experience is perhaps the real differentiator; the experience of Dyer Mortgage’s team and the experience customers have. Most of the company’s 13 professionals have worked together for over a decade and some two decades; their team is diverse and reflects the community they serve, being bi-lingual and including active duty and retired military families. Her team calls them, “Bobbie-ism,” memorable sayings that define Dyer’s approach, like, “The cheap often becomes expensive.” By assisting the customer through specific local information, such as down payment assistance and
property tax exemptions, the value become clear. “Internet or out-oftown lenders don’t know about County assistance programs clients may be eligible for, this could be a grant of up to $30,000 the consumer would not know about, unless they worked with a local lender,” Dyer said. That perspective comes from the experience of having 30 years in mortgage banking, with over 10,000 loans closed and having funded over $500,000,000 in home mortgages. Add to that, Dyer has been recognized as a Nationwide Top Producer, along with being voted one of the 2018 70 Elite Women in Mortgage Banking in the U.S. it becomes clear why Dyer Mortgage is another example of why working with local companies pays so many dividends.
TOP TWO MISTAKES CONSUMERS MAKE
1
Going online and providing personal information (including social security number) to internet companies, while assuming that they are working with the actual lender. In many cases they are applying with a lead-generation site, that appears to be a lender, but is not. These sites often sell their information over and over.
2
“Instant approval” loans aren’t so instantaneous. Automated applications are very useful. But the difference with Dyer Mortgage is validating the information and personally going over all aspects of their personal financial situation. These loans are too large to commit to without all the details being known.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PREPARE FOR HURRICANE DAMAGE CLAIMS [ By Michael P. Sapourn, Esq. and David J. Volk, Esq. ]
B
eing properly informed and prepared, from the time you submit an application for property insurance until the worst happens, is usually the difference between having coverage denied, or undervalued, and arriving at a fair claim settlement. This subject could fill a book, but the following tips will better prepare you for the aftermath of storm damage.
The insurance application Let’s begin with the application for insurance. Florida Law allows an insurance company to void coverage (meaning act as though the policy was never written) if the application the policyholder signs contains “material” misrepresentations or the concealment of “material” facts. The term “material” has a statutory definition. Many insurance companies conduct their first detailed review of the application after a large claim has been submitted. They look for anything on the application that may be false, and then issue a letter voiding coverage, accompanied by a check for the total premiums paid on the policy. At that point, you need a lawyer to battle the company in court. Before this happens, your first line of defense is to review the questions answered on the application and be certain those
answers will pass the future scrutiny of insurance company investigators. Often, applicants rely upon the insurance agent to guide them through this process. Insurance agents are busy people, and they sometimes assume the answers to certain questions on your behalf and then ask you to sign the application. If they made the wrong assumption and you did not correct the mistake, you may find yourself without coverage at precisely the time you need it the most.
Policy warranties Some questions on the insurance application focus on your “protective safeguards.” Those include burglar and fire alarm systems and hurricane shutters. When you answer “yes” to the existence of these protective safeguards, the insurance company generally issues the policy with “Protective Safeguard Warranties.” These endorsements to the policy void coverage if the protective safeguard was not in proper use at the time of a loss. That means you must set the alarm when you leave the premises and have your hurricane shutters installed when a “named storm” is heading your way. Florida Law expects policyholders to read their policies. So, take a peek at the endorsements to your policy (generally found near the end of
6: SPACCOAST SPACE E C OAST B US B UINE S I NSESSS| | S PAC SPAC E CEOAST C OAST BUBU SINES S INES S .CO S .CO MM
the policy) and be sure you know what is expected of you.
How to prepare in advance of a claim With today’s digital technology, everyone should tour the house or the commercial property and photograph or video all the personal property that is covered by your policy. We like video because it allows you to comment on the model, make and year you bought the TV, stereo or dining room set. Upload the photo or video file to the cloud. This assures preservation of the record. This record is vital when you are asked to prepare an inventory of all items damaged or destroyed at the time of a disaster. You’d be surprised how much more you remember when you have a visual record of your property, and that improves the settlement value of your insurance claim. When you purchased the house or commercial property you probably paid for an appraisal. Most appraisals include a “Reconstruction Cost Estimate” to rebuild the structure. That estimate includes vital information like square footage, construction quality and “extras” that add value to the structure. Use the full reconstruction value when writing the dwelling or building limit on your initial policy application. Have your company include an “Inflation Guard” endorsement that increases the limit of insurance over time. In the event of a total destruction of the covered building, Florida Law generally requires the insurance company pay the limit shown on the policy declarations. Of course, when a named storm is heading your way, install your shutters, drain some water out of the pool, turn-off the water main and turn the natural gas off before vacating.
When disaster strikes If the worst happens, consider hiring a reputable public adjuster to help you value your claim and prepare the Proof of Loss. Do your homework on which adjusters are “reputable.” They generally charge a percentage of the claim settlement amount (don’t sign an Adjuster Agreement that asks for more than 10%). Good public adjusters generally earn enough additional settlement money to justify the expense.
Michael Sapourn spent 30 years in the insurance business including as an independent agent and a public adjuster and now litigates insurance claims as both a lawyer and an expert witness at The Law Offices of Michael Sapourn. His law practice specializes in representing policyholders when they feel their insurance company doesn’t play fair.
David Volk of Volk Law Offices, P.A. has been a commercial litigation lawyer for 32 years. At times, Michael and David jointly prosecute insurance claims cases.

AN IMPRESSION OF SOUTHEAST AEROSPACE THE GROUNDED MINDSET THAT MAKES FLIGHT POSSIBLE [ By Christian Dossett, Writer ] Southeast Aerospace hangar Photos provided by Southeast Aerospace
I
visited Southeast Aerospace on a hot Florida day in July at their location on The Melbourne International Airport. Mirages floated above the tarmac. Massive and small planes ascended and descended over my head upon arrival. The sound of helicopters permeated the atmosphere as their blades chopped through the air to defy Earth’s regular downward pull. I felt like I was where the action was, and I would soon have the opportunity to share my enthusiasm with the staff. Once I was welcomed into the lobby, I sat awaiting my host and witnessed employees strolling through with smiles on their faces and warm greetings to one another. There’s still a familyowned small business spirit in the quarters of SEA, 26 years since its inception. During my tour of the facilities, Paul Siebert (Aircraft Production Manager) and Aprile Blair (Director of Marketing) led me outside from the Hangar to the fabrication shop and our gazes shifted from onward to upward as we set our sights on another plane breaking the bound of gravity. At this moment, I looked back down to my guides with a smile on my face to see that they were also sporting grins of admiration. It became obvious to
me that they had never lost their recognition for the magic of flight. After a combined 40 years in the aerospace industry, their luster for airplanes refused to dull. I asked Mr. Siebert if my observation was truly the case and he confirmed my assumption along with informing me that the overwhelming majority of the staff all have a love for airplanes. I then sat down to speak with Ms. Blair and Executive Vice President, Joe Braddock, after my tour who discussed one of the basic business philosophies the company has lived by for many years – keep it simple. That sounds trivial, but what he means is that many companies in aviation complicate normal everyday business even in a highly technical industry like this. Mr Braddock commented, “At the end of the day we are still just providing a product or service just like any other business and we will continue to grow as long as there are good people to bring in here. We are always looking for good people to add to the company.” The Braddock family has grown SEA from the original idea of selling high-quality products and services with warranties. Decisions in the growth of the company have been consumer-

centric; SEA aims to do their work so well that the customer doesn’t feel like they’re doing any work themselves. The company has taken a no-stonesunturned approach to do business the right way, which includes employing the right people and treating them well. SEA is not just the parts manufactured and sold; SEA is not just the repairs and machines used to do so. SEA is the employees behind the work and SEA is the company to keep people safe in the air.

RENZETTI, INC.: BY FLY FISHERS, FOR FLY FISHERS [ By Heather Motro, Junior Assistant Editor ]

"T
here is always a way to do it better... find it." Posted above his teacher’s desk at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in the late 1960s, this Thomas Edison quote caught Andy Renzetti’s eye and stuck in his memory. When he got hooked on fly fishing several years later, he found that the fly tying vises of that time were ineffective and frustrating to use. There had to be a better way to tie flies, and in the spirit of Eddison's words, Renzetti set out to find it. With a one-car garage as his workshop and his younger brother as his right-hand-man, Renzetti created his first True Rotary vise, named the Presentation 3000, in the early 1970s. Word of the Presentation 3000 spread throughout the small but tight-knit fly fishing community. As Renzetti’s after-hours hobby developed into a flourishing business, he relocated to a three-car garage. Then, a two-story shop. Now, a full-scale facility in Titusville. It’s a long way from his humble beginnings, but through the success, Renzetti, Inc. has remained an honest, quality source upon which fly fishers can depend.
Fly fishing 101 To understand the fly fishing business, we have to get to know the sport. Lily Renzetti, Andy’s wife and President of Renzetti, Inc., explains that conventional fishing and fly fishing have a lot 14: SPACE SPACE COAST C OAST B US BU INE SIN S SE SS|
in common. In both, the goal is to attract a fish – in conventional fishing, with a bait, and in fly fishing, with a fly, an imitation of what certain fish in a body of water would eat. But with fly fishing, she continues, the fly and the structure of the rod present new challenges: "Imagine tying a fly... add that to the skillful task of casting a fly rod and presenting that fly to the fish so you can entice it to bite it, and then the challenge to bring that fish in with a very light rod.” The vise is a tool used to tie the fly to the line. It was this piece of equipment that Andy Renzetti first innovated back in his garage in Pennsylvania. The kind that he crafted, a True Rotary vise, can turn as the user ties, allowing the fisher to use small flies and streamers that require more intricate handwork to tie. Now, Renzetti, Inc. offers not only True Rotary vises but also rod lathes, vise accessories, flies and more.
Good citizens Lily Renzetti believes that the company is unique "for contributing to society even before it became a part of a company's marketing plan." From the very first Renzetti vise that hit the market to the dozens of variations available today, Renzetti products have been made with the highest-quality materials, right here in the United States in Renzetti, Inc.’s very own manufacturing facility. Knowing that all their products are USA-made gives Andy Renzetti, Lily Renzetti and the rest of their team confidence that their equipment benefits not just
| S PAC SPAC ECE OAST C OAST BUBU SINES S INES S .CO S .CO M M
their clients but the whole nation. The family atmosphere of the staff and the feedback from the fishing community fuel Renzetti, Inc.’s desire to always “give [the fly tyers] more so they can grow with the sport," Lily Renzetti says. Another, perhaps unexpected, source of inspiration in the fly tying business: America's veterans. She explains that fly tying can bring a much-needed sense of peace and purpose to our nation’s veterans. “What comes to my mind… is a comment a veteran made to me, “When I tie flies is the only time I do not hear voices,” she recalls. “That stayed with me for the last 15 years.” Renzetti, Inc. keeps innovating, and Andy and Lily Renzetti keep fishing. “We still travel miles, when possible, domestically and internationally in search of the next fly fishing experience,” Lily Renzetti says. No doubt it’s this passion for quality fishing that pushes Renzetti, Inc. to stand always at the forefront the fly fishing industry.

BEST PRACTICE
FUNDRAISING
Pamela GUNTHORPE Pamela Gunthorpe is president of the Space Coast Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). AFP advances philanthropy by empowering its members to practice ethical fundraising through professional education, networking, research and advocacy. She is the community engagement and grants manager for Brevard Schools Foundation and serves on the board of directors for South Brevard Sharing Center.
SPECIAL EVENT FUNDRAISING HOW TO CREATE A SUCCESSFUL EVENT Many people think that fundraising is all about hosting special events. However, as these events are popular among the volunteers who organize them and the people who attend, events can become more about entertainment and less about supporting an important mission. While these events do hold a specific purpose in overall charitable giving, it is imperative that they not become the lifeline of your organization. According to the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), events are an expensive tactic, second only to direct mail acquisition. The cost per dollar raised is $0.50, which generally doesn’t include the indirect costs of time or labor. So, with a community calendar already packed full of events and a low return on investment (ROI), how does an organization determine if it should add yet another fundraising event to its calendar? Are fundraising events worth all the effort? Thoughtfully managed fundraising events play an important role in a comprehensive annual giving program. They provide the opportunity to draw SPACE 26: SPAC COAST E C OAST B US B INE U SSI S N E SS | S| PACSPAC E C OAST E C OASTBU BU SINES S INES S .COSM .CO M
participants into your mission, helping fundraisers to identify new donors and to educate and connect with people. When managed effectively, the event becomes more about the cause and less about entertainment. In order to create a successful fundraising event, there are three things you should consider. Create an experiential event. Black-tie affairs and “rubber chicken” dinners have begun to give way to experiential events. These types of fundraising events connect donors to your mission on an emotional level. For example, St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which funds cancer research for kids, raises funds through a headshaving event. The commitment to shave one’s head raises both awareness and funds and brings hope to children who have lost their hair during treatments. Likewise, “dining in the dark” events bring awareness of the challenges of those who are visually-impaired, and some of Brevard’s philanthropists have even slept overnight in a tent to support those who are homeless.
Choose quality over quantity. Considering the higher ROI of events in comparison to other fundraising tactics, successful organizations are opting to reduce the number of events held to focus on creating one quality event that educates, inspires and develops sustainable investment. Your event’s return on investment should always be included in the event analysis.
You do what you do best. We'll deal with the fine print!
Missionize your event. Your event should educate participants about the real work of the organization and tell a compelling story that helps them to truly understand the scope of your programs. This could be delivered as a visionary message by your organization’s leader or, with some careful coaching, by a current or former client. A personal testimonial will always trump a video or boring presentation spouting statistics and program data. By communicating the impact of charitable gifts, you show your guests the difference they can make, and you inspire real generosity. Beyond raising revenue for your organization, a successful fundraising event should bring awareness to your organization, create genuine donor engagement and inform participants of the great things you’re doing for the community and how they can help fund them. Be sure to incorporate these ideas into your event planning and you’re sure to develop long-term relationships with your donors.

FOUNDER OF THE YEAR LUKE & ASSOCIATES
[ By MIke Candelaria, Writer ]
S
uccess in business is no guarantee — even when the service need is so huge one can drive an 18-wheeler through it. Or, in this case, an ambulatory vehicle.
The shortage of medical staffing across the United States has been widely chronicled, and projections for the future are troubling. An example: According to one 2018 study, 2.3 million new health care workers will be need by 2025 to keep pace with the aging population. The situation is magnified throughout the U.S. military, where military medical personnel are often deployed overseas, heightening the national shortage of physicians, nurses and staff personnel. Enter Rockledge-based Luke and Associates, a company that isn’t merely helping to fill voids, it’s thriving. Founded in 2004, the company provides a wide range of health care services and medical research/development to all branches of the military and soldiers’ families, along with the Department of Defense and Veterans Administration treatment facilities domestically and in Europe. Also, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has been a contract partner, as have the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency and the Centers for Disease Control, in addition to other government and commercial entities. Regarding comprehensive medical care to military families, for instance, services range from preventive medicine to behavioral science and extend from routine examinations to surgical procedures. The company’s first contract bid was made in 2005, which was won in 2006. By 2011, there were 1,500 employees. Today, all totaled, more than 2,500 health care professionals have been placed worldwide at military installations, with the current site count at approximately 60, while care also is available to national, regional and local health care networks. Further, Luke and Associates provides information management and research expertise to the military and private industry — maintaining a staff of developers, programmers and specialized IT professionals — plus offers a variety of professional services to support the operation of business organizations. Can anyone say, “successful”? Yet, it hasn’t happened by accident. In fact, it almost didn’t happen. Cofounders Jim Barfield and Rich Hall brought business development/consulting and IT/management skills, respectively, to the table. Initially, though, even the backgrounds of those two seasoned professionals weren’t enough. “We fell flat on our face within the first year,” said Hall, chief financial Officer and chief information officer. “We had to go back to
the contract officers and talk to them and lay out a plan: ‘This is exactly how we are going to fix things.’ And we did what we said. The government absolutely respected that, and that was a huge learning process for us.” “That was a tough meeting for us, too,” recalled Barfield, president and chief executive officer. “We had to tell the government that we’re failing — that we weren’t doing this right, so these are the actions we’re going to take. And I think they were kind of floored that we came to them to tell them. … And we did exactly what we said we were going to do.” Within the next three years, while policies, processes and procedures still were being tweaked, and the infrastructure still was being built, company revenues climbed from zero to more than $100 million. “There were significant challenges. … It was daunting,” Hall said. “And Jim and I are very hands on.” As the company grew, so too did Barfield and Hall professionally. For a time, Barfield left the day-to-day to serve as a Brevard County commissioner, where he expanded his scope and sharpened his vision for the future. Meanwhile, Hall broadened his business acumen at the company, and his staff similarly rose to the occasion. “I had my own company before Luke. But when [Barfield] went to be county commissioner, it had to excel me to a level I had never been at before,” Hall said. “So, it was challenging. But to be able to do what we did — our staff is tremendous. I can’t talk enough about them. If it wasn’t for our staff, we would be where we are today.” For Luke and Associates, spiritual strength also is a factor. The name Luke actually was taken from the Bible. “The reality is, we’re both very strong in our faith,” said Hall, simply. In turn, the company views its current 60 military installations as “opportunities” to assist. “We have our veterans coming back, our military coming back, and we treat them,” said Barfield. “We have all kinds of medical people that work directly with them. So, we have the opportunity to find when there are needs.” In essence, the company’s mission to help the military, just like its cofounders’ roles in and out of the company, is all about building community. “Communities are important,” Barfield concluded. “… It’s doing what you can for people. … The old saying that ‘the more you give, the more you receive’ is true.” S EPT EMB ER 2 019

WHERE THE LOCALS GO: PLANNING THE PERFECT HAWAIIAN GETAWAY ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAT JOHANA CONTRIBUTOR
T
o be honest, Hawaii was never on the top of my list of places to visit. I always thought it was overrated. However, I very recently discovered that I was wrong. I had a great time doing as the locals do and have decided to compile a list of my favorite places for those of you who are planning your next vacation.
CHINA WALLS After passing through a residential area, you discover this tiny treasure tucked away in Hawaii Kai. It’s called Koko Kai Mini Beach Park (China Walls). Once you find parking along Hanapepe Loop, be ready to – safely – cliff jump into the Pacific Ocean.
KOKO HEAD CRATER TRAIL This is a steep climb to the top of Koko Head Crater with over 1,000 stair steps —but felt more like 10,000 steps. I highly recommend hiking Koko Heard early in the morning before the sun is too harsh.
Oahu south shore. It’s not as crowded as the downtown Honolulu beaches and there are also food trucks on site, which is a huge pro. This is the perfect place to come to after a long hike at Koko. Any bodysurfers out there? The powerful currents and steep shore breaks makes this one of the best beaches in Oahu for experienced body boarders and bodysurfers. Sandys is also known as “the beach with broken necks,” so swimmers be careful.
MAKAPU‘U POINT LIGHTHOUSE TRAIL Compared to Koko Head, Makapu’u Point is a breeze. This trail is paved with cement which helps minimize the risk of falling. There are many scenic views along the hike, including a lighthouse. Towards the top of the hike, there is a trail that you can take down to visit the tide pools. If you’re lucky, there’s also whale-watching potential!
HANAUMA BAY
The trail consists of abandoned railroad ties that run along the crater’s west side to the top. Fun fact: the military used them during World War II to transport supplies to a lookout post at the summit.
Formed within a volcanic cone, Hanauma Bay offers a pristine marine ecosystem. It is the perfect spot for snorkeling!
The spectacular view is so worth the hike. Give yourself some time to sit, relax and enjoy the beauty of God’s creation. Don’t forget water!
• $7.50 (park entrance fee)
What to Bring: • Towel
SANDY BEACH PARK
• Swimsuit

Diamond Head (above) and Koko Head Crater Trail (main)
NORTH SHORE If I could only choose one spot to visit again, it would be North Shore. This was everything you think of when you think of Hawaii. From the Pipeline House to the crystal blue water, I could never get enough.
DOLE PLANTATION On the way back from North Shore, we stopped at the Dole Plantation, because you can’t go to Hawaii and not visit the historic pineapple plantation, right? This is a pineapple lover’s paradise.
DIAMOND HEAD With breathtaking views overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Diamond Head is a must. The trail takes you to the edge of a 300,000 year-old crater. The hike isn’t that long in terms of distance, but parts of the trail are over uneven rock, and the 99 steps near the end of the hike are quite steep. If you plan on hiking, try to get there early, as parking fills up quickly.
Time: about 1.5 hours to complete Entrance Fee: $5.00 per car or $1 per person Neat Fact: The U.S. military used Diamond Head as a post for preventing attacks against Honolulu. ⊲

HUNGRY? HERE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE FOOD SPOTS: The Sunrise Shack | This was
my favorite spot. The vibes, the music, the people, the food ‌ it was all amazing. We hung out here a couple hours and even made new friends. I recommend the avocado toast, acai bowl and bullet coffee.
Health Bar | A cute atmosphere to grab an acai bowl with the sweetest workers.
Island Brew Coffeehouse |
I absolutely loved being able to walk to Island Brew Coffeehouse in the mornings. They have a variety of premium coffees and local, organic breakfast and lunch options, plus a waterfront patio. The iced chai tea with condensed milk was amazing. Also, how cute is the inside!?
Banan | Different than the typical acai, this almost reminded me of a frozen yogurt texture. And the portions are huge! I got a medium but a small would have been enough. So many yummy toppings to choose from as well.
Haleiwa Bowls | After a fun day at North
Shore, Haleiwa Bowls is the perfect pit stop to eat some acai bowls. I am still drooling over this! I will be back here for sure.
Heavenly | The perfect brunch spot in
Waikiki. The French toast was literally heavenly that we went back again later that week!
Fresh Catch | Another recommendation
by a local friend and it was so good! Fresh Catch serves local-style poke, seafood, plate lunches, stews & soups. I got poke and it was delicious.

A WEEKEND TO REMEMBER:
PLANNING THE PERFECT MIAMI GETAWAY
O
BY SARA SANTORA MANAGING EDITOR
ne of the best parts about where we live is the ease of access to every part of the state. Yes, Brevard’s beaches are beautiful; however, as Florida has so much to offer, it’s important to take a weekend trip every now and again. I personally love getting in the car and discovering new parts of the state I have called my home for 23 years.
But what I loved most about the hotel was its architecture. The InterContinental’s walls are constructed from marble mined from the same quarry as the Sistine Chapel, and the hotel was built around Henry Moore’s 18-foot, 70-ton Spindle sculpture – which is also made of marble – that sits in the center of the hotel’s lobby.
I recently took a weekend getaway to Miami and was completely blown away by all that the downtown area had to offer. Miami is known for its beaches and nightlife, both of which have been depicted in film and tv for decades. But Miami is quickly growing to be much more. As someone who has traveled to Miami countless times over the years, I was surprised to discover new parts of the city that I had never seen – or heard of – before.
Also located in the lobby are three different restaurants, including the infamous Pan-Latin Steakhouse, Toro Toro. During my stay, I was lucky enough to participate in a cooking class lead by the restaurant’s head chef. Here, he helped us make two different appetizers, and while my plating was lackluster – I won’t quit my day job – the taste was incredible. After this, the staff guided my group back to the main restaurant and fed us until our hearts and stomachs were full.
Living luxuriously During my trip, I stayed at the InterContinental Miami. Known around the world for its luxurious amenities, the InterContinental Miami was as breathtaking as I’d hoped. Located in the heart of Downtown Miami, this hotel has everything you need for a weekend away. The hotel towers over Biscayne Bay, so those with a bay-front room have the pleasure of waking up to a beautiful Miami sunrise over the water. For those who don’t have a view of the Bay, don’t fret; out your window is the infamous Miami cityscape. 102 : SPAC ECOA ST L IV IN G | S PAC ECOA ST L I V I N G .CO M
Both the food and the atmosphere were unforgettable. My favorite part of the dinner was the dessert: La Bomba Clasica. The dessert is a chocolate sphere filled with cream cheese mousse, dulce de leche & strawberry ice cream, fresh berries, almond cookie crumbs, caramel and vanilla and berry sauces. Think of this dish as part dessert, part performance art. Your server will put cellophane down on your table, and will drop the dessert onto the cellophane, letting the chocolate and fruity insides fall where they may.
A new metropolis As previously stated, the InterContinental is in the heart of downtown Miami. A quick Uber ride will take you to Museum Park. Located on the other side of Biscayne Bay, this park is home to the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science and the Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM). At the Frost, you have the opportunity to pet stingrays, admire sharks and observe a variety of wildlife including owls and snakes. You can also visit the planetarium and learn all about our expansive universe. A few short steps away is PAMM, one of the country’s most Instagrammable museums. Here, while palm trees, crystal blue waters and high-rises are the views outside, the inside is its own world, full of colorful, complex and tasteful modern art. If it weren’t for those signature palm trees, it would be easy to forget that you were in Florida, and not one of the north’s major metropolitan areas. Apart from its galleries, this 200,000
La Bomba Clasica dessert Photography by Josh Painter
Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM)
square foot museum has its own restaurant, so you don’t have to travel too far to have a relaxing lunch break. I recommend sitting outside if possible, as the view is hard to beat.
Cosmopolitan experience On our last evening, we took an uber ride over to Brickell City Centre. To describe this place as a shopping center would be to seriously reduce its size and scale. Here, you can find luxurious shopping, dining, apartments and office space. This is very much what I picture heaven to look like. At Brickell City Centre, I participated in La Cucina HandsOn Neapolitan Pizza Workshop at La Centrale Italian Food Hall. It was everything I could have anticipated a pizza class to be.
When we arrived, they very quickly poured each of us a glass of wine and let us relax at the family-style table while we waited for the chef to arrive. Once he did, we grabbed our aprons, and carefully watched and listened as he walked us through how to build our own pizzas. While the pizza was excellent, this class only reinforced what I learned at Toro Toro: not to quit my day job. Brickell City Centre is close to many of Miami’s famous districts, one being Wynwood. If you haven’t experienced the art, food and nightlife Wynwood has to offer, I cannot recommend this area enough. I won’t lie, it was hard to come back after such an incredible weekend away. Though I was able to fit in a lot of sightseeing, there was still so much that I hadn’t seen. Do yourself a favor and plan a visit in Miami. Whether you relax by the pool or enjoy the museums, you’ll have a vacation from which you’ll never want to return.

Without a Heart, it’s just a machine. So in 1971, a little Heart built a different kind of airline—one that made sure everyone could fly. Everyone has important places to go. So we invented low-fares to help them get there. To us, you’re not 1A or 17B. You’re a person with a name, like Steve. Here, we think everyone deserves to feel special, no matter where you sit or how much you fly. And with all the places we’re going next, we’ll always put you first, because our love of People is still our most powerful fuel. Some say we do things differently. We say, why would we do things any other way? Without a Heart, it’s just a machine.
"I was stuck inside and could barely get in and out of bed...I love the beach and couldn't go for years because I couldn't physically walk in the sand. The pain was so incredible that I got to the point I couldn't even sleep. I began to think this is how my life was supposed to be at my age until Health First Orthopedics gave me a chance to live again."
