Letter from the
EDITOR Hi everyone,
Can you believe it’s already November? That means we’re weeks away from holiday festivities. Before you have a panic attack, relax; there’s a point to this letter besides affirming today’s date on the seasonal calendar. Consider this … Often times, we’re simply going through the motions, doing the everyday mundane tasks that come our way and so forth. While simplicity can actually be a good thing sometimes, it’s important to not get caught up in our own selfish mindsets. It’s so easy to dwell on things that, truly, in the grand scheme of life, don’t really matter. Consequently, these distractions cause us to miss out on some of the biggest blessings and opportunities to serve those who truly need support. You’re about to read some fantastic stories of individuals who put others first, find joy in helping people, and, well, just live life in a giving-back state of mind. Don’t get me wrong. Holiday festivities are meant to be enjoyed, from the fantastic food and decorations to the memorable time with family and friends. But before we get caught up in the hustle-bustle of this season, it’s important to take a step back and observe what’s going on in this community. Did you know thousands of people cannot afford to have a Thanksgiving dinner this year? Others are simply alone since they’ve lost loved ones. Try giving back to someone this season, whether that’s serving at a local charity, being kind to a neighbor or inviting a stranger to your holiday dinner. The joy this will bring you is irreplaceable. Don’t take my word for it. Read ahead on what our locals are saying about giving back.

Beauty Trends Why Choose Dermaplaning? With Jeanne Whitman
L
ooking for a new way to exfoliate your skin? Dermaplaning is one of the latest facial techniques that exfoliates dead skin cells and removes unwanted peach fuzz. It can be done by itself or paired with another facial or chemical peel. In addition to being a deeper, non-abrasive exfoliation, peels can hydrate, lift hyperpigmentation and speed up cellular turnover. “I like to create a cocktail of serums, an oxygen facial, or combine it with a brightening and lightening chemical peel for that ‘wow’ factor and for more dramatic and pleasing results,” said Jeanne Whitman, founder of Achieve Beautiful Skin. “Dermaplaning alone will leave your skin feeling soft, smooth and supple.” Other benefits include reducing fine lines and wrinkles, increased skin care product absorption and smoother makeup application.
20 : spac ec oa st l iv in g
“The skin will photograph beautifully, so it’s the perfect treatment right before highprofile events.” Whitman recommends having dermaplaning every four weeks to remove the dead skin cells and fine hair that have built up, but you should consult with your practitioner first. All skin types benefit from dermaplaning (including those with rosacea), with the exception of those with active acne. This treatment is also safe and effective for pregnant or nursing women. ◆

ALASKA The Last Frontier
By Tanya Mutton
M
y husband and I had the opportunity to live in Anchorage, Alaska for two years, and we spent every available moment enjoying everything this beautiful state had to offer. There were so many things we’ll never forget, including the moose and bears walking along the streets of Anchorage, riding ATVs out in the boonies, cross country skiing and the daily views of Mount McKinley.
22 : spac ec oa st l iv in g
HERE ARE MY 3 FAVORITE ALASKA DESTINATIONS: KENAI FJORDS NATIONAL PARK We went on a day cruise from Seward into the Kenai Fjords National Park. At the edge of the Kenai Peninsula, nearly 40 glaciers flow from the Harding Icefield. We were extremely lucky on our first trip to see multiple species of whales, otters and birds. The expansive ice, lush forests and waterfalls were breathtaking.
BARROW, ALASKA (Officially known as Utqiagvik) With only three hotels, this small, remote town is the northern-most city in the United States and is located in the Arctic Circle. Summers boast only one hour of darkness, but winter bares only one hour of light. For us, Barrow represented a couple of days spent immersed in true Alaska living.
IGLOO CITY, CANTWELL Alaska’s abandoned igloo hotel is located 200 miles north of Anchorage. Originally intended to one day serve as a hotel, Igloo City was never completed. It was constructed sometime in the 1970s but could not meet the building codes of the time it has changed ownership over the years but currently sits abandoned. It’s in the middle of nowhere, and most people mark it as a half way point between Anchorage and Fairbanks. nov emb e r 2018 : 23

3. Lavender: also called “lilac,” it’s a pastel tone that, unlike pink or baby blue, can add character to a statement or intricate outfit.
6. Cherry red: a “full-bodied” color, ideal to enhance velvet, tulle and satin. Ideal for elegant, retro-feel looks.
7. Fuchsia pink: it’s still one of the favorite hues with designers. Exuberant if worn from head to toe, or as a creative detail. 8. Digital blue: the color of almost all social networks. A color that evokes technology and the future. 9. Sapphire yellow: to uplift classic patterns, like florals or checks. 10. Orange: fall’s symbolic hue, it will stand out with all its “vitamin C” effect. nov em b e r 2018 : 25

“I Was in Your Shoes.” By Steven Hicks
DEION McCARTER SHARES HIS STORY WITH STUDENTS AT VIERA HIGH SCHOOL.
I
n mid-August, Barbara Kelly, the director of the Academies at Viera High School, received a call from a former student. Deion McCarter was calling his favorite teacher because he was going to be in town. He had just finished working on Clint Eastwood’s latest film, The Mule, in Atlanta and wanted to talk to students at his old school. Kelly remembers McCarter as a “WIP,” or a Work in Progress, a student she knew could do something with a little help and guidance. McCarter did not have a great high school experience. He made a few friends with less than great intentions, skipped school a lot, but learned he loved “anything to do with cameras.” Elizabeth Sivco, who teaches television and video production at the school, remembers McCarter as “loving my class and jumping in on any opportunity to shoot video or stills.” Today, McCarter is a working assistant director and set production assistant in Los Angeles. On non-union projects, he is typically assistant director. On largerbudget projects, he is typically a set production assistant, earning enough experience to join the Director’s Guild. He has worked on the television show Fresh off the Boat, Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel, FX’s Mayans M.C. and the new Transformers movie, Bumblebee. He is currently working on a major Paramount movie due out in 2020.
So, why did McCarter want to put himself back into a high school classroom? … To implore students to find their WHY.
“I WAS ONCE IN THEIR SHOES, SO I KNOW IT’S IMPORTANT TO LOOK HARD NOW AT WHAT YOU LOVE TO DO, TO PURSUE THAT PASSION AND NEVER WORK A DAY IN YOUR LIFE,” HE SAID. “The ‘why’ you get up every day and face 70hour weeks, difficult clients, directors or stars, and less than ideal conditions – movie sets can be really tough – is loving what you do. School is a requirement to get there, though, so find a reason now to put in the required work.” Kelly knew he had it in him, knew he could do anything he set his mind to, and loved that he wanted to share his journey with the Academy’s current students. “It's something that will hopefully resonate with them,” she said. “Something they can take with them as they move ahead with their schooling and careers.” ◆
McCARTER has worked on the television show Fresh off the Boat, Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel, FX’s Mayans M.C. and the new Transformers movie, Bumblebee.

DON AND JULIE HERNDON ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE BY GIVING BACK AND HELPING CHILDREN IN THE COMMUNITY.
W
hen it comes to giving back to the community, Don and Julie Herndon, owners of Classic Wood Flooring, have a passion for serving and helping children in need. It all started with an introduction between the Herndons and Kim Frodge, the founder of Nana’s House, a nonprofit organization for abandoned and abused children.
34 : spac ec oa st l iv in g
By Mallorie Ann Ingram
“WE MET AT OUR CHURCH ONE DAY, AND SHE HAD JUST GONE UP TO GIVE A TESTIMONY,” HERNDON EXPLAINED. “SHE HAD A DREAM SHE WAS GOING TO START A COMMUNITY OF EIGHT OR NINE HOMES TO HELP CHILDREN, WHICH WOULD BE CALLED NANA’S HOUSE.” ▶
Kim Frodge, Founder of Nana’s House
Frodge decided to make the dream a reality and started moving forward with plans to build Nana’s House as a place for children to live in a safe environment, outside of the system, to thrive and later possibly be adopted.
IT WILL BE A SAFE HAVEN, A PLACE CHILDREN (FROM INFANTS UP TO 15 YEARS OLD) CAN GO IMMEDIATELY TO BE TAKEN OUT OF A BAD ENVIRONMENT. “I was blown away by her story, and later, another couple listening at the same time decided to donate their retirement community currently under construction to Nana’s House,” Herndon said. Every year, a fundraiser is held to get volunteers and support in order to complete Frodge’s vision, and this is where the Herndons stepped in to help by raising awareness and encouraging people and builders to get involved. 36 : spac ec oa st l iv in g
“ONE THING THAT ATTRACTED US TO NANA'S HOUSE IS THAT THE STAFF, INCLUDING THE CEO AND PRESIDENT, DOESN’T TAKE ONE PENNY OF SALARY,” HERNDON ADDED. “IT’S ALL 100 PERCENT VOLUNTEER.” Since the development of Nana’s House began, Classic Wood Flooring has donated all of the floors and installation for the eight houses, the community center and a storage facility. This, along with support from volunteer builders and contractors, has helped to create beautiful, nurturing homes for the children and their house parents. “I just couldn't believe a need for something like this was in our own community,” Herndon asserted. “I felt like it was on both of our hearts that we had to do whatever we could do. What greater way than using our business to help with the floors? It just makes us feel so good we can be part of such a wonderful thing.”
Another organization the Herndons are involved with is AMikids Space Coast, which is a residential facility for boys. AMikids Space Coast helps the boys, ages ranging from 13-18, grow into productive citizens. Since 1988 AMikids Space Coast has helped more than 1,500 kids transform their lives, strengthen their community and break the cycle of failure and poverty. AMI's dynamic programs and comprehensive services address each boy's unique issues, focusing on education, behavior modification and treatment. “We have three Brevard County certified teachers helping our boys attain their education goals,” Herndon explained. “We teach the boys to be self sufficient. They do all their cooking, cleaning and simple maintenance at the facility.” Herndon is involved with the board to help raise money for this cause. "Our goal is to separate our boys' troubled past form their bright future.” Herndon added.
“The kids need to know someone out there is looking out for them and is willing to show them the right path." Along with Herndon's support, a fully dedicated staff helps make it possible. They love what they do, which helps the kids and the community with dramatic results. Despite the boys averaging more than 12 arrests prior to enrolling in the program, 71 percent of the kids do not re-offend within the first year of completion. “If these children didn't have anywhere to go to change their lives, they would likely end up in prison and a burden to our community instead of productive citizens positively contributing to it,” stressed Herndon.

hile last month’s Space Coast Inspiration Awards raised funds to help preserve St. Mark’s Episcopal Community campus in Historic Cocoa Village, the event and associated publicity also raised awareness about plans for “The Campus of The Future.” St. Mark’s Episcopal Community is working on plans not only to preserve its
campus, but also, to improve the campus so it may serve the region for generations to come. The Space Coast Inspiration Awards were presented to a constellation of Space Coast civic stars and shined a spotlight on the past and present, as well as the possibilities that lie ahead for Florida’s Space Coast and St. Mark’s Episcopal Community.

t the Early Learning Coalition of Brevard, reading, writing and arithmetic are joined by social and emotional readiness. With 4,600 children in statefunded Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) programs through the Early Learning Coalition of Brevard, Sky Beard is pleased. Beard is executive director of the coalition, which works to ensure young people from birth to kindergarten are set up for eventual success in school. In addition to those in VPK — the largest enrollment total of any
44 : spac ec oa st l iv in g
county in Florida — approximately 3,500 children and their families each month are part of the School Readiness childcare programs, with another 600 children on waiting lists.
“There’s a tremendous benefit for children being able to experience a developmentally appropriate, high-quality early education program in their prekindergarten years,” asserted Beard. Yet, there remains an area of “huge” concern regarding children across the county and, in fact, throughout the country: mental health.
Mental Health as a Priority
While news accounts, both near and afar, often focus on the ultimate tragedy of teen suicide, more subtle issues can begin their ripple effects in the very young, according to Beard. As a result, although mental health is becoming an increasingly prevalent topic in middle and high schools, “there’s also a need to start that conversation much earlier,” she added. “People ask, ‘You’re talking about 2-year-olds, so how can you be talking about mental health?’ You absolutely can be talking about mental health with 2-yearolds,” said Beard.
“WHERE DO YOU LEARN RESILIENCE? WHERE DO YOU LEARN THAT YOU’RE IMPORTANT? WHERE ARE THOSE FOUNDATIONS TAUGHT? THEY’RE TAUGHT VERY EARLY ON.”
BEARD POINTS TO POSSIBLE CAUSES OF MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS, INCLUDING TRAUMA IN A CHILD’S HOUSEHOLD SUCH AS ABUSE, NEGLECT AND EXPOSURE TO ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES. “When children have those kinds of traumatic experiences in their early years, it has an impact on their brain development,” she explained. “It has an impact on their ability to manage their world.” Beard also added that early problems are typically manifested in developmental delays and other noticeable behavior/ discipline patterns. In response, the coalition is not only working to “spark increased community conversation,” according to Beard, but also providing greater support to centers of early learning. Coalition staffers visit and observe classrooms, make recommendations and bring in families to help identify needs for further services, among other actions. In these cases, the emphasis is not simply on preparing the children to learn how to read and write. It is all about getting them ready socially and emotionally. “If we’re only looking at what we would consider the classical educational needs of children — do they know their alphabet letters, do they know their numbers? — we’re missing a whole piece of their needs,” Beard concluded.
“IF WE’RE NOT LOOKING AT THE WHOLE CHILD AND EVERY COMPONENT OF A CHILD’S DEVELOPMENT AND THE FAMILY THEY’RE WITH, WE’RE NOT SERVING THAT CHILD AND THAT FAMILY IN A HOLISTIC MANNER.” ◆ nov emb e r 2018 : 45

hen it comes to giving back to local county residents, American Muscle Car Museum owner Mark Pieloch not only lives life in the fast lane, he thrives in it. Pieloch’s operation focuses on three key elements, one of which is hosting charity fundraisers in Brevard County. Since opening its doors in 2016, the museum has hosted 42 fundraisers for various nonprofit organizations, of which approximately $2.4 million has been raised. ▜
nov em b e r 2018 : 49
“WE NEVER CHARGE ANYTHING FOR OUR FACILITY,” PIELOCH SAID. “WE JUST HOSTED AN EVENT FOR HONOR FLIGHT, THE ORGANIZATION THAT FLIES VETERANS TO WASHINGTON, D.C. FOR THE DAY, AND WE RAISED OVER $100,000.”
Another element is participating in approximately 20 auto events each year, ranging from Porsche Club of America involvement to various Corvette clubs.
When Pieloch gives tours, he makes it a point to talk with the kids, explaining to them he didn’t grow up with a silver spoon in his mouth.
Along with hosting fundraisers and taking part in auto events, Pieloch is dedicated to including educational programs. The American Muscle Car Museum works with Florida Institute of Technology’s automotive engineering program, where students and professors visit the museum to test their experimental cars.
“When my dad got out of World War II, he did the typical thing … got married, started having kids. There were five of us at home; my mom stayed at home, my dad worked and my mom always told us to get a good education,” he said. “I tell kids today that everything they see, I worked for, and that they can do it, too.”
“The museum is open to all students. It doesn't matter if the kids come from public schools, private schools, Christian schools, homeschooled kids, and so on, if you're a student, we're going to go ahead and give you a free tour,” Pieloch said. “We’ve also conducted over 30 different Boy Scout tours.”
The list of influential activities keeps going. To say Pieloch’s generosity has touched the lives of thousands would be accurate. “My past experiences and family history are what motivate me to open the doors for these unique events and fundraisers. This is where my heart is.” ◆
“MY MOM ALWAYS TOLD US TO GET A GOOD EDUCATION. I TELL KIDS TODAY THAT EVERYTHING THEY SEE, I WORKED FOR, AND THAT THEY CAN DO IT, TOO.”

His duties included going on patrols every day, and he was part of the Quick Reaction Force, a unit capable of rapidly responding to developing situations. After closing out the campaign in Iraq, he returned home. The best part about being home from deployment? “Being able to get a solid night’s sleep,” he said, laughing. And the most valuable lesson he learned while serving in the Army? “You can do about anything with enough determination.”

Without a Heart, it’s just a machine. So in 1971, a little Heart built a different kind of airline—one that made sure everyone could fly. Everyone has important places to go. So we invented low-fares to help them get there. To us, you’re not 1A or 17B. You’re a person with a name, like Steve. Here, we think everyone deserves to feel special, no matter where you sit or how much you fly. And with all the places we’re going next, we’ll always put you first, because our love of People is still our most powerful fuel. Some say we do things differently. We say, why would we do things any other way? Without a Heart, it’s just a machine.

Helping Hand GREAT SOUTHEAST FLOORING AMERICA EXPANDS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM TO INCLUDE 10 AREA HIGH SCHOOLS.
I
t is no secret colleges and universities can be expensive places to attend — and costs are rising, steadily. Americans owe about $1.5 trillion in student loan debt spread among 44 million borrowers, according to a recent report in Forbes. Only mortgages constitute a higher debt burden in the United States.
It is a welcome development, therefore, when business owners and other donating entities step in to help defray the cost of education. Nelson Green, owner of Great Southeast Flooring America, is one of those helping students from 10 area high schools. “Young people in our community have so much to offer, and many of them are seeking higher education,” Green said. “The educational system in Brevard County has been so helpful to us — to me, my family and many working at Flooring America — and we want to assist them in any way we can. That’s why we’re providing these scholarships. It’s the right thing to do.” Green got the idea two years ago when he established a $1,000 scholarship for a graduate of Satellite High School planning to attend the University of Florida. Being a graduate of both institutions, it seemed like a natural fit for him. After all, Flooring America has been involved in sponsoring nearly every sporting event at Satellite High over the course of many years. 54 : spac ec oa st L IV I N G
BOOSTING THE PROGRAM “A lot of us in the Green family attended Satellite High … my wife, Karen, my children and grandchildren,” he said. “Helping that school has always been a privilege, but we also realized the great value of the other area schools and wanted to provide some aid to those students, too.” Last year, Green offered a scholarship to a Rockledge High student as well, expanding eligibility to anyone attending any four-year college or university. This year, he has added the following high schools to the program: Bayside, Cocoa, Cocoa Beach, Eau Gallie, Merritt Island, Melbourne, Palm Bay and Viera. Great Southeast Flooring America will award a $1,000 scholarship to a student at each of those 10 participating schools.
EVERY DOLLAR MAKES A DIFFERENCE “We recognize every contribution helps,” Green said. “By the time a student pays back each dollar of a student loan, it becomes roughly $2 with all the interest applied over time and adjusting for inflation. We want to help reduce that cost.”
Great Southeast Flooring America will award a $1,000 scholarship TO A STUDENT AT BAYSIDE, COCOA, COCOA BEACH, EAU GALLIE, MERRITT ISLAND, MELBOURNE, PALM BAY, ROCKLEDGE, SATELLITE AND VIERA HIGH SCHOOLS.
The awards are designed for students “displaying academic achievement, sportsmanship, citizenship, leadership and integrity.”
Vice President and General Manager Chris Green with scholarship winner Kamryn Palmer.
There are several criteria for receiving one of the 10 available scholarships. First, the student must be headed to a four-year university the following year. He or she must submit a 500-word essay on “How I would use the $1,000,” and a teacher recommendation is required. Interact Club Members receive special consideration in the selection process. ◆
INTERESTED STUDENTS SHOULD CONTACT THEIR GUIDANCE OFFICES TO RECEIVE AN APPLICATION. EACH SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT WILL BE ANNOUNCED AT THE AWARDS CEREMONY AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.

The Hero Within
If you have ever spent time around a child with a severe illness or special needs, you know they possess incredible strength. SpaceCoast LIVING's photographer, Jason Hook, highlights this strength through Operation Superhero. Hook was inspired to start Operation Superhero by another artist in California, Josh Rossi. Operation Superhero works with organizations like the Holz Foundation to provide some incredible children the opportunity to see the hero within. Children like Ariana enjoy an afternoon dressed as their favorite superhero, striking poses in a full photo shoot. Hook then often spends several hours in Photoshop creating beautiful movie posters that are presented to the children. All free of charge. â–ś

LIFE IS SOBERING; FOOD'S INTOXICATING
AT RISING TIDE TAP & TABLE.
t is almost sunset at Port Canaveral. Rising Tide Tap & Table is busy for a Monday night. There is a good casual crowd eating, drinking and sharing stories from the weekend. Rising Tide is that kind of place. Gary Foreman has pulled himself away to sit with SpaceCoast LIVING and tell us about this restaurant, just now celebrating its first year. Foreman is a friend of, and business partner with, Rich Hensel (of Fishlips, another local icon), and a restaurant entrepreneur for many years. “Obviously with Rich’s activities at his restaurant, he knew about this location and its opportunities, especially at that time when we opened,” Foreman explained. “We negotiated with the local family who owned the bakery here and acquired the leasehold for this property and then spent another two years of renovations to create a unique ambiance throughout the restaurant.” Foreman and Hensel wanted the restaurant to be an everyday location. “My restaurant experience is beer and pizza, and one of the pieces that came with the restaurant was this really beautiful Italian baking oven. So, of course, we make artisanal thin crust pizzas.

WE WANT TO ENSURE OUR MENU IS ANCHORED IN ACCESSIBLE FOOD – PIZZAS, TACOS AND BURGERS. THEY'RE DIFFERENT AND MADE WITH HIGHER QUALITY INGREDIENTS, BUT THEY'RE STILL PRICED THE SAME AS EVERYBODY ELSE IN THE PORT.”
BUT THERE IS MORE… Foreman explained there are many great Florida craft beers right now, and it is actually becoming one of the top states in terms of new craft beers. “We're using 30 of our 60 taps for Florida craft beers,” he said. “Our happy hour features these beers, with a price discount of $2 off all pints of Florida craft. There’s always a food special that goes along with those beers, and of course we have a full bar. I wholeheartedly recommend the margaritas … rocks, salt.”

AND THEN THERE IS THE FOOD … At this point in our conversation, chef Jeff Kainz joined us with a beautiful plate of nachos. “This is our ‘not your normal nachos.’ Basically, it's our wonton crisps with cannellini beans, shrimp, smoked mahi and crab queso,” he said. “It's a hot queso with jalapenos pickled in-house, cilantro and salsa. It's really nice.” He’s right, of course. Not normal, but spectacular.
Nacho Normal Nachos
Foreman is extremely happy to have found chef Kainz. “It’s important to our concept that we’re a scratch kitchen,” he said. “I think chef, if we'd let him, would make salt if he could. Everything we do here is sharable, cravable and lovable.” Besides the nachos, we tried the tuna appetizer and the tuna dinner, and I have to recommend the street tacos, easily some of the best I have ever had.
“AT THE END OF THE DAY,” FOREMAN SUMMED UP, “WE HAVE GREAT, CREATIVE FOOD AND AN EXCEPTIONAL SELECTION OF FLORIDA BEERS. ADD TO THAT GREAT SUNSETS FROM OUR PATIO, AND WE’RE SEEING AN APPRECIATION FOR WHAT WE'VE BUILT HERE. OUR GUESTS TEND TO KNOW GOOD BEER AND GOOD FOOD.” ◆ Luna Tuna Appetizer

MELBOURNE’S POLISH POTTERY MIXES PATTERNS, CELEBRATES COLORS AND OFFERS AN ADVENTUROUS SHOPPING EXPERIENCE
F
or Polish Pottery owner Teresa Beach, the traditional stoneware was a passion before it became a business. While living in Europe for many years, Beach visited Poland in 1993 and became a collector of the brightly colored and patterned pieces. She began sending gifts home to her mother and sister-inlaw, and after they fell in love as well, she began to wonder if there might be a market for Polish pottery. When she returned home to Florida in 1999, the Polish Pottery business was born.
100 DIFFERENT PATTERNS AND MORE THAN 200 UNIQUE SHAPES. The warehouse itself is a hidden gem, located in an industrial area along Wickham Road at 3185 New York Avenue #13, in Melbourne. But walking through the doors into the 4,000 square feet of retail space filled with color and pattern is an amazing experience. “I’ve heard it’s an adventure coming into the store. It can be a little overwhelming the first time you come in, with so many choices. I suggest taking a stroll through the entire store to get a better idea of what’s available.”
Beach is happy to walk customers through the offerings and is a wealth of information about the history, artistry and utilitarianism of Polish pottery. “One great feature of Polish pottery is you can create your own unique collection by mixing and matching patterns, and the more you get, the easier it is to add another.” Each piece is hand painted in Poland, and the high firing temperatures create durable, utilitarian stoneware covered in intricate, beautiful decorations. All Polish pottery is oven, microwave and dishwasher safe, making it perfectly suited for everyday use. “It’s essentially functional art,” Beach said. “Some pieces are labeled UNIKAT, meaning ‘unique’ in Polish. Collectors are sure to find some unique pieces to add to their collection.” But for Beach, the things that make certain pieces special are the holiday and family memories wrapped up in her collection. “I have so many traditional pieces I’ve had in my house forever — casseroles and plates I served Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners on year after year. Those are my favorites because they hold such wonderful memories.” ◆

ALPIZAR LAW 40 Years Strong By Steven Hicks
I
f you were assigned the task of writing about Alpizar Law, LLC, you would start with John Alpizar being sworn into practice by the Honorable Clarence Johnson in 1978. You would also probably write about the firm’s specialty of injury cases related to motor vehicles and touch on the fact John Alpizar has represented all that is law in Brevard for 40 years. You would write about the firm being wellrespected by its peers and the public it serves …but you would miss the story of the family behind the firm. Alpizar Law has become more than even John Alpizar had ever hoped when he opened the business’ doors. It has turned into the family law firm he never expected. Talk to him about this and you will see him beam with pride and satisfaction. The senior Alpizar said, “Lawyers and law firms from outside the area advertise they’re a local law firm because they have an office in the county or they’re trial lawyers. We know we’re Brevard County's law firm. Not that we limit our work to Brevard County, but we take great pride in Brevard County. We’re trial lawyers who likely try more cases in this community than any other law firm and will continue to do so for those who need us.”
The Third Alpizar Joins the Firm
Scott Alpizar was born and raised in Brevard, went to high school at Holy Trinity and was off to Harvard for his undergraduate degree. An MBA brought him back to Florida State University, after which he worked in corporate finance for a few years in Jacksonville for a Fortune 100 company. He then enrolled in law school at Florida International, and as he said, “graduated as quickly as I could to get back to the family business.” “I've been practicing law since 2016 but started here in 2015 before I passed the Bar. I'm the young one on the block,” he said. “I came back because I was bored with what I was doing and wanted to practice law. Being able to work with my family and to be back in Brevard County was what I was hoping for. My wife is from this area as well, so it was good for us to come back home.”
David Alpizar Weighs In
“With each of us coming from different backgrounds, we can take a collective approach to each case,” said David Alpizar. “We offer the experiences of our various backgrounds to help
decide or figure out issues for any given client. We plan strategies that always have two or now three sets of eyes on every case. I joined the firm in 2007, and it’s definitely a different dynamic now. The focus is still the same, the commitment is still the same, and our desire to help the people of Brevard is still the same, but we’re building the next generation. It’s exciting; it’s the face of our future.” For John, after 40 years of practice in Brevard County, having his sons join the firm was a high point of his career and the biggest compliment he could receive. He never expected his sons would be with the firm because it was not something the family sat around the table talking about.
“It was quite the rewarding day when David approached me and said he wanted to come back to Brevard,” said John. “I spent a lot of time trying to talk him out of it because professionally I wanted him to explore every option he could.” ▶ nov em b e r 2018 : 97
“We’re all dedicated to doing the best job we can for the people we represent.” -John Alpizar
David believes it helps that they all genuinely enjoy what they are doing and are helping people. For David, it does not feel like work when sitting around the dinner table talking about a case or issue. Scott agrees: “Until our respective wives tell us to change the subject, or we start getting that look, we like talking about work. We also have a lot of similar hobbies and interests. We all like being outdoors, playing golf, and also enjoy boating and fishing. We like being together at work and at play.”
The Alpizars and The Community
Brevard residents see the family’s community engagement most visibly through their holiday turkey giveaway, which is coming up on its sixth year. It is a great way to kick off the holiday season, and as Thanksgiving approaches, many families are faced with the prospect of struggling to make ends meet while trying to provide a holiday meal for their children. The Alpizars offer one free turkey to any family in need and will probably give away 700 this year.
David serves on the board for Operation Hope based in Fellsmere, as well as three professional boards; the Brevard County Bar Association, Central Florida Trial Lawyers Association and as the immediate past president of the Vassar B. Carlton American Inn of Court. John has served on the Brevard County Bar Foundation, is past-president of the American Board of Trial Advocacy, Central Florida Division, and is just finishing his sixth and final year as the representative of the Florida Governors of the Florida Bar for the 18th Circuit, representing Seminole and Brevard counties. “When Michael Kahn was president of the Brevard Bar Foundation, he came to me needing funds for various programs,” said John. “In response to that need, we created the O. John Alpizar Endowment Fund, and I made a substantial contribution to get it off the ground. I continue to fund it annually and also encourage other lawyers in the community to contribute, as well.”
As for Scott, he has only been back in town for a couple of years and is just starting to get established in the community. He serves on the Young Lawyers Division Board of the Brevard County Bar Association and is trying to get exposure to other organizations. “Obviously, it’s important we build a legacy,” said John. “We’re all dedicated to doing the best job we can for the people we represent, and that includes primarily injured victims of accidents due to the carelessness and negligence of someone else. These people need help getting through their difficult times and, in most cases, getting through the rest of their lives.
When I started in 1978, it was expected you would give back to your community and to the profession. That has stayed with me all these years, and it’s something I’ve encouraged David and Scott to do as well.” ◆

ver y year, the Saturday before Thanksgiving is a great day for Palm Bay, Melbourne and Brevard County as a whole. The first turkey will be given away at 10:30 a.m. This year the firm will be giving away 700 turkeys – one turkey per household, must be 18 years old or older. Providing a
Helping Hand By Marcia Gaedcke
The Titusville Area Chamber of Commerce recognizes the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on our community, and is working with other community entities to initiate conversations and end the associated stigma.
S
ubstance abuse and mental illness ‌ the statistics are frightening ‌the reality daunting. There are few who have not been directly affected. But there is good news: Resources are continuing to emerge to help stem the tide and provide relief for sufferers.
100 : spac ec oa st b u s iness
The statistics: • According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 21.5 million American adults (ages 12 and older) battled a substance use disorder in 2014. 1
• 1 in 5 adults will experience a diagnosable mental illness in any given year, and more than half of those will go untreated. 2
• In a five-year period, rates of severe youth depression have increased. 3
• Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in Florida, and the 3rd leading cause of death for ages 15-24. On average, one person dies by suicide every three hours in the state. 4
Although these statistics are indicative of the widespread challenges we face, there are ongoing programs and new facilities facing the challenge head-on and working to remove the stigma that surrounds mental illness and addiction.
Palm Point Behavioral Health in Titusville
An 80-bed facility that expands access to inpatient and outpatient mental health treatment for the Central Florida region, Palm Point is operated by Universal Health Services and is a sister facility to University Behavioral Health. The facility officially opened in mid-October to serve adolescents, but has separate child and adult units to offer specialized treatment for individuals of all ages who are experiencing behavioral issues. (www.palmpointbehavioral.com)
All public middle and high schools in North Brevard
have active Sources of Strength programs sponsored largely in part by Parrish Healthcare. Sources of Strength is a youth suicide prevention project that uses the power of peer social networks to prevent suicide, bullying and substance abuse. The program is currently being expanded to local private schools as well. (www.sourcesofstrength.org)
Doctors Goodwill Foundation
has dedicated its November 1 gala to bringing awareness and raising funds to “Remove the Mask” and shatter the stigma of opioid addiction and suicide in Brevard County. (www. doctorsfoundation.org). The founder of the organization, Dr. Kantilal Bhalani, will be the guest speaker at the Titusville Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon on November 14 at LaCita Country Club. If you would like to join us for the presentation, you can register at www.titusville.org or call 321-267-3036.
We are fortunate to live in a community willing to confront challenges head on, engage in the difficult conversations, and develop the necessary resources to save lives and improve our quality of life. hen Jennifer and Jonathan Meacham, owners of Epic Boardsports in Cocoa Beach, outgrew their existing building and found a larger building to expand their operation, they wanted to move quickly through acquisition and relocation. The new property at 350 N Orlando Ave was just one block west of their current building and included two additional buildings with existing tenants, so the move would also provide an additional source of cash flow. When it came time to interact with banks, however, the company known for action with its paddleboard sales, tours, lessons and rentals found itself at a standstill. “We were serious about the loan process, but some other banks weren’t,” Jennifer Meacham said. The Meachams’ fortunes changed, however, when they began working with Fred Williams, vice president/commercial lending of Fidelity Bank of Florida, which has offices in Merritt Island and Longwood. Williams is responsible for developing and servicing prospective business customers and providing a variety of commercial and real estate loan products, and he arrived on the scene with more than 25 years of industry expertise. In this case, according to Meacham, Williams also brought urgency.
⊳ Jennifer and Jonathan Meacham and their sons, Xander and Ziek, with Fred Williams, Commercial Lender.
“He took us seriously from the start, and when it came down to numbers, they were workable,” she noted, adding, “He has also been instrumental in providing referrals for commercial insurance and other things that made this a really positive transaction.” In the end, Fidelity Bank of Florida provided the funds to purchase the property, as well as financing to renovate the new building, which currently is being gutted and remodeled to accommodate Epic Boardsports’ growing business. That commercial loan transaction was small in the grand scheme. Yet, its underlying theme speaks loudly: meeting needs quickly. Essentially, the Meachams did not want to wait around, and Williams obliged them. A resident of Melbourne since 1990, Williams delivered another especially valuable lesson for good local business: listen. “The capacity to listen to what the customer needs and promptly assist in meeting those goals is what sets the Fidelity Bank of Florida team apart from the rest,” Williams said. “The interaction with various business owners and learning about their businesses enables us to provide the services necessary to help them grow and be successful.” ◆

SCOTT BURES COMPANY: Universal Engineering Sciences, Inc. TITLE: Business Development Representative EDUCATION: Auburn University, BEE, Electrical Engineering
Florida Institute of Technology, Macroeconomics
YEARS IN AREA: 38 YEARS IN INDUSTRY: 38 WEBSITE: www.universalengineering.com Scott Bures describes his approach to his current role as business development representative for the Brevard County office of Universal Engineering Sciences with his trademark transparency: “It was never my style to simply sell someone another part for a jet airplane. I was never afraid to admit I knew a lot less about prospects’ businesses than they did. I always tell customers I want them to teach me about what they do.” It is this honesty and willingness to learn from everyone he meets that has kept him at the top of his field for decades. 104 : spac ec oa st b us in ess
After graduating from Auburn University with a degree in electrical engineering, Bures relocated to Florida in 1980, where he studied macroeconomics at Florida Institute of Technology. Since then, he has consistently held positions that allow him to combine his extensive knowledge of engineering with his talent for communication and sales. With decades of experience under his belt, Bures approaches his role at Universal Engineering Sciences — selling engineering services to executives who may have an engineering mindset — in a very different way. While traditional sales approaches can sometimes be effective, Bures has found his strength in not attempting to compete with prospects’ technical knowledge base, but by trying to understand what motivates them. “I try to sell psychologically, not necessarily logically,” he explained. “If I think Universal does something that will benefit their company, I’ll present the idea to them.” With a strong understanding of marketing and sales within the aerospace, technology and military sectors, Bures is comfortable working in the booming market of Brevard County. He is proud to call the Space Coast home and excited about the potential that lies in the diversified future of the area. When he is not at work, he is tuned into the music scene of the Space Coast, songwriting and playing trumpet “tableside” during regular gigs at Squid Lips in Melbourne. ◆

RICHARD BROWN COMPANY: Holiday Builders TITLE: Regional President of Florida Divisions When he describes the partnership between Holiday Builders and Shelter Mortgage, which dates back to 1997, Richard Brown’s words indicate a history full of both victories and challenges. All have been weathered to form a partnership built on respect that continues today. “In a partnership, it’s a give-and-take, and when times are good, no one complains,” said Brown, regional president of all Florida divisions for Holiday Builders. “It’s when things are difficult the true test of a partnership is revealed. We’ve maintained the ability to be nimble and handle adversity together.” It seems no one is better suited to measure this compatibility than Brown, who started off as president of one Florida division in 2014, according to Holiday Builders president and CEO Bruce Assam. “On September 1, 2018, he was promoted to regional president over all of Florida and Coastal Alabama,” Assam said. “We credit Rich for his outstanding leadership and assembling a team successful in continuing positive growth for Holiday Builders.”
As Brown works to expand and improve his divisions and lead his teams in pursuing goals that honor the company‘s vision, he has become more familiar than most with what Holiday Builders needs in a partner. “We maintain strong channels of communication, from the top level of management throughout the organizations,” Brown said. “We’re transparent with our growth strategies and plans, which helps each company to be proactive and more successful.” It is these shared values of quality, respect and individualized and exceptional customer service, in both the Florida team led by Natasha Cartagena Spencer, senior vice president of Shelter Mortgage, and the Orlando team led by Kent Winkelseth, that make them such a perfect fit. “While Shelter is part of a much larger organization, the team led by Natasha is very much like ours in that we’re a familyoriented company,” Brown said. “Our mission and values are similar. Holiday Builders’ goal is to provide a quality-built home of lasting value for the best possible price.” ◆

Preparing for the
UNEXPECTED Having the proper insurance coverage is vital to ensuring peace of mind. By NuVantage Insurance
118 : spac ec oa st b us in ess
When it comes to insuring your most valuable possessions, you have important choices to make. In the event of a loss involving your home or car, do you know how you would like to be reimbursed? Does your current policy reflect these preferences? It is critically important you evaluate the following two types of coverage to ensure you are well-informed.
Actual Cash Value vs. Replacement Cost
Three Common Myths About Auto Insurance
CASH VALUE
There is no shortage of wrong information about car insurance. And unfortunately, making decisions based on half-truths can complicate your life and cost you money. Need help deciphering myth from fact? Be aware of these commonly held, yet not quite true, beliefs.
If you elect for an actual cash value insurance policy, you will likely be compensated for the fair market value of the item at the time it was lost or damaged. Pro: These policies often have less expensive monthly premiums, so you could insure expensive items for less. Con: The payout is not based on what you paid for the item. This means you could be out the difference if something has depreciated in value since you purchased it.
MYTH 1: If you total your car, you do not have to
pay off the remainder of your loan.
For example, if you had a wreck and wanted to replace the car you bought five years ago, you will probably be accepting payment for what a vehicle of that make and model would fetch now, minus your deductible and wear and tear.
Truth: Unless you carry optional gap insurance to supplement the difference between the balance of your loan minus the fair market value of the car, you could be facing a loss if you owe more than the car is worth. Review your options when buying coverage to make sure you minimize this risk.
REPLACEMENT COST
MYTH 2: Comprehensive covers everything.
Pro: You can replace older items for what they would cost to purchase new.
Truth: A better way to say it is that comprehensive insurance coverage will pay when your vehicle is damaged by something besides another driver. Essentially, it probably will not kick in for incidents triggered by a collision. However, it should cover damage caused by things like vandalism, natural disasters and fallen tree limbs.
Many agents recommend replacement cost insurance, especially for homeowners. This sets you up to be reimbursed for the full amount it would take to rebuild your home and replace everything in it.
Con: This option tends to be more expensive. Also, you must replace all items claimed to recoup the payout and cannot use the money for other things. Keep in mind multiple factors come into play when determining how an insurance claim will be paid out, including how accurately you can describe, document and show the lost value of your property in your proof of loss, the type of policy you have, and the basis of claims settlement. By understanding your options, however, you can be assured of success.
MYTH 3: If a friend is driving your car, they are responsible for any damage done.
Truth: While that may be the most socially acceptable answer, it is not the rule. In most cases, the owner's insurance policy follows the vehicle, not the person driving it. So even if you were not in the car at the time of the collision, you will probably still have to file the claim. â—†

MARIJUANA IN YOUR FLORIDA WORKPLACE IT IS DECISION TIME
The Florida Medical Marijuana Legalization Initiative, also known as Amendment 2, was approved by voters back on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. Has your business considered changes to your policies regarding drug use and your drug free workplace program? It is time for Florida business owners to answer some tough questions about marijuana in your business.
Who can use Medical Marijuana?
Human resource managers, safety managers and the working staff must all be educated about the company’s decisions and policies.
120 : spac ec oa st b us in ess
For the record, Florida law provides a constitutional right to use medical marijuana for individuals with certain “debilitating medical conditions”; currently these conditions include: cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, HIV and AIDS, post-traumatic stress disorder, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. Amendment 2 also includes a catch-all category for conditions “of the same kind or class as or comparable” to those mentioned above.
Employer or Employee Protections
Florida Statute 381.986 is vague about what a Florida-based employer should do about accommodating a medical marijuana card holder in the workplace. There is no clear statutory language giving employees protections with
regard to employment. The employer is given authority to continue to enforce a drug-free workplace program. It is also clear there is no accommodation required for using or smoking marijuana at the workplace.
Marijuana — a Schedule I Drug and Still Illegal under Federal Law
For employers regulated by the United States Department of Transportation (DOT), there is a specific requirement to prohibit marijuana, and an applicant or employee is to be removed from a safety sensitive position based on a positive drug test result for marijuana (THC). There are no exceptions in DOT drug testing programs. Currently for the non-regulated employer, the company’s philosophy must be vetted along with expert advice and decisions must be made and turned into policy. This discussion is urgent. Important specific decisions must be made regarding whether the company will do drug testing and will the company drug test for marijuana. What will the consequences be for a positive drug test? Will there be accommodations for a medical marijuana card holder? Human resource managers, safety managers and the working staff must all be educated about the company’s decisions and policies. Drug-free workplace program policies written five, 10 and 20 years ago need to be updated.
Standing Firm – Continued Drug Testing for Marijuana
For now, Florida employers should maintain their drug-free workplace and continue testing for marijuana. Consider the potential impacts of marijuana use in your workplace: • Inconsistent work quality, impairment of hearing, vision and short-term memory. • Poor concentration and lack of focus. • Decreased productivity or erratic work patterns. • Absenteeism and tardiness, unexplained disappearances from the job site. • Carelessness, mistakes or errors in judgement. • Needless risk taking and disregard for safety. • Driving accidents, inability to cope with sudden changes in surrounding and/or emergency situations. • Liability from accidents caused by employees testing positive for marijuana. A strong written drug-free workplace policy can protect the employer who is testing for marijuana. Five comprehensive strategies are offered for employers to stand firm to protect their business; these include: 1. Acting with a sense of urgency to update your drug-free workplace policy language when dealing with marijuana and other drugs of abuse including synthetic opioids. 2. Knowing the safety sensitive and other work-related risks associated with marijuana and other impairing substances. 3. Creating a culture of safety, and targeting and embedding this message in supervisory training and employee education. 4. Adding as an essential job function the “ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner” to every safetysensitive job description can serve to meet the safety culture. 5. Putting all the puzzle pieces into place to form your compliant legal strategy to effectively stand firm when dealing with marijuana in your workplace. For additional protections, when a medical marijuana cardholder has a positive drug test for marijuana, it is important to discuss and examine the situation among the highest levels of management. Do not allow a hasty decision on termination of employment or withdrawal of the job offer. Consider the possibility of making an accommodation based on the specifics of the job function and the company’s current drug-free workplace policy. Your best practice is to take action. Talk among your leadership about medical marijuana and potential drug use in your workplace. Make decisions and put them into a new or updated comprehensive drug-free workplace policy. ◆ nov em b e r 2018 : 121

THE MISTAKE
EVERY GROWTH-MINDED LEADER CANNOT AFFORD TO MAKE
“When you’ve lost your why, you’ve lost your way.” – Michael Hyatt
122 : spac ec oa st b u s iness
Market demand for services were high, revenues and cash flow were great, and there was access to good amounts of cash. Expansion felt like the right next move for this West Coast business. After months dreaming up a robust vision for expansion, the owner concluded it was time. After hiring more employees and contractors, things were rocking!
Lack of a clear identity and role is a recipe for disaster …
Or were they?
When you step inside this way of life, your rough days outnumber the great ones. And, more likely than not, your negative mindset starts to unravel your business culture and strategy.
Two months in, unease surfaced. Cash flow decreased. An aura of confusion encircled the leadership team and morale took a hit. When I arrived on the scene, the owner could not pinpoint what happened. When I asked why he wanted to expand, he responded, “I just thought it was the right thing to do.”
When you are not clear on who you are and what role you are going to play at each stage in your business, you are walking towards the door of confusion. When that door opens, say hello to things like irrational decisions, anxiety and depression.
Therein lies the problem.
Next, your people start to run from you. Then, you lose control of yourself and your business. Your product or service begins to suffer, and your customers find your replacement.
And this problem is a by-product of a BIG mistake thousands of expansion-hungry entrepreneurs make. They fail to consider one of the most important pieces to high-performance and success: CLARITY. Clarity matters because today, more than ever, consumers and employees demand higher levels of it from the marketplace and its leaders. If you are not clear as the leader of the pack, you will be singled out.
Most entrepreneurs simply put their head down and sprint to keep up with the everincreasing pace of business. Problem is, they never take a minute to identify the finish line and how their business is going to continue serving its people and customers better than
Without a clear vision, you are playing Russian roulette with a brick wall …
the competition. Pretty soon, everyone is lost in the shuffle and distancing themselves further from the strategy. “Hitting the wall” is closer than they think. It is like walking around Disney staring at your cell phone. You may not run into anyone first thing in the morning, but as more people come through the doors, the odds are stacked against you. Once you hit the wall in your business, your pace halts but your competition keeps going. Momentum is first to go, followed by your loyal customers.
Lack of a clear mission will crush even the best vision …
Michael Hyatt said it best: “When you’ve lost your why, you’ve lost your way.” Too many leaders get off-center during expansion, even if they have clear visions. It is because they lose sight of why they are in business in the first place. The day-to-day overtakes them. And when you are lost, it is only a matter of time before you start to panic. When you start to panic, so does everyone else around you. So, how can you get the clarity it takes to successfully lead your people and customers during expansion? Quite simple, actually. Ask and answer the following three sets of questions before you even think about diving head first in the growth pool: 1. Who do I want to become? Am I clear about who I am today and what is important? Am I living in alignment with the best of who I am? What roles best position me to excel with BOTH passion and proficiency? 2. What do I really want now in my personal and professional life? What am I most certain and clear about? In what areas am I uncertain or directionless? How can my business serve my purpose? 3. Why did I start (or buy) this business? If I could multiply by 10 my impact on the marketplace, are these reasons strong enough to keep me centered and focused? Now, do not simply answer these. Assemble five to seven DISinterested entrepreneurs who have successfully gone before you. Convince them of your answers. These questions are an opportunity to tackle a high-performance habit that has proven effective by the world’s most successful entrepreneurs and executives. You deserve this level of clarity, as do your people and business. So, get out your pen. Grab paper. Get away from every possible distraction and reward yourself with this first step toward freedom and focus. Do not make the same mistake that is destroying even the greatest of businesses. Answer the questions! ◆

SOCIAL MEDIA BOOSTING YOUR BRAND
WITH INSTAGRAM TashaMACRI Tasha is the director of Digital Marketing for SCB Marketing, having spent the past few years perfecting the art of social media marketing.
Building your Instagram brand is a science that if done correctly can greatly increase your following and business revenue.
124 : spac ec oa st b u s iness
Being able to evolve in business is critical to survival. Instagram has been the one social media platform constantly evolving to meet its followers’ needs. In 2012, Facebook acquired Instagram, turning it into a platform that has several popular features; the imagery of Pinterest, hashtags of Twitter and short stories of Snapchat. Currently, there are more than 8 million businesses active on Instagram. Building your Instagram brand is a science that if done correctly can greatly increase your following and business revenue. Here are some tips to boost your brand.
Create Your Exposition
Just like a good story, your brand must connect with your audience. In any great book there is the exposition, the introduction that sets up your plot. Your business must address: • Character: Who is your customer? • Conflict: What problem does your customer face? • Setting: What is the look and feel of your business?

Visual Branding
When you think of branding, think about the mall and the multiple stores all competing for your business. A store’s window display shows you the feel of its brand, and within a moment you make a decision whether to enter. Instagram is simply one big mall of people entering different stores/profiles based on the window display/visual branding. In one moment they choose whether or not to follow your business.
Mastering Window Display: • Create a mood board with what you want the look and feel to be. Recommend: Pinterest Board • Apply a filter to your images … be consistent! Recommend: Use one filter • Create a great rotation so you do not post the same types of posts repetitively.
Content and Collaboration
The Number 1 rule of Instagram content is be short and sweet. No one wants to read a novel; you want to give them just enough to be intrigued to enter your “store” and show you are the resolution to their problem. A great way to get new followers is to collaborate with local businesses or influencers; these are people who have a large following and can give your business recognition by driving traffic to your profile.

EXALTING FREEDOM
THROUGH ETHICAL CAPITALISM
THANKS A LOT!
Mindset of Gratitude By Jeff Piersall & Eric Wright
“Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.” – Marcus Tullius Cicero
Jeff Piersall
Eric Wright
126 : spac ec oa st b us in ess
A
thoughtful observer once said, “For something to change in your life, one of two things has to happen — your life changes or you do.” To passively wait for life to change your trajectory is like hoping your financial problems will be solved by winning the lottery. A distractingly pleasant fantasy perhaps, but as a life strategy, it is lunacy. What is more, it sidelines you as a passive observer, rather than being the franchise player you were meant to be on the “My Life” team.
There are many actions that can bring change to your life, but few are as significant as cultivating the mindset of gratitude. Frankly, without it, your mind will drift into the black hole of victimization, envy and narcissism. As author Shauna Niequist said, "When life is sweet, say thank you and celebrate. When life is bitter, say thank you and grow."
Before you dismiss this like some motivational poster with a clever saying and a picture of someone enjoying a sunset or climbing a cliff face, recognize that gratitude is the primary virtue that promotes sociological and psychological health. Dr. Robert Emmons, professor of psychology at the University of California, co-authored the first scholarly work on the subject titled, The Psychology of Gratitude, with Michael McCullough, associate professor of psychology at the University of Miami. Emmons described gratitude as “The cardinal moral emotion that promotes cooperation and makes our society civil.” Then added, “Without gratitude, life can be lonely and impoverished.”
Inward and Outward Benefits
Gratitude not only is the cornerstone of civility and teamwork, it has been found that a gratitude mindset results in lower levels of anxiety, envy and depression, while increasing optimism and a sense of well-being.
“When life is sweet, say thank you and celebrate. When life is bitter, say thank you and grow.” – Shauna Niequist
In one study, middle school students were asked to list five things they were grateful for daily for two weeks. They were then compared to a control group who simply recorded their everyday experiences. The result was the gratitude group reported a greater level of satisfaction with their school experience. As Oprah Winfrey observed, “If you look at what you have in life, you will always have more. If you look at what you don’t have in life, you will never have enough.” A similar study was done by Paul Mills, a professor of Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, on the role gratitude played on heart health. In his study he found that participants who kept a journal in which on most days they wrote down two or three things they were grateful for showed reduced inflammation and improved heart rhythm. The journal keeping had the impact of reducing the risk of heart disease after only two months. Using brain scans, neuroscientists have found similar “profound” and “long-lasting” effects from this type of journaling.
What Does Gratitude Do?
1. It Creates an Abundance Mindset — Rather than a
mindset of lack, be it a lack of opportunity, resources or success, an abundance mindset believes there is enough for everyone to share, myself included.
2. It Generates Solutions — The openness to possibility that comes with gratitude changes perspectives and moves people from the blindness of pessimism to seeing potential that connects ideas and creates results.
3. It Multiplies — Gratitude is quite contagious. Acknowledging your own good fortune and sharing how you have benefited from the character, ingenuity and hard work of others can spread through an office or organization like a rising tide.
It is also worth noting that gratitude has been found to be one of the key ingredients in successful marriages. So, instead of making Thanksgiving an annual holiday, make it a daily habit.◆ Trep Talks is the educational platform of Jeff Piersall and Eric Wright; for more information visit www.linkedin.com/company/trep-talks-ec
