ortage County, named for the portage that was necessary between the Wisconsin and Fox River, sits at the crossroads of the Wisconsin River Valley and the Central Sands Region. Nestled in the center of the state, its landscape is as diverse as the rich cultural fabric that represents it’s communities. Get a taste for the Stevens Point area, at one of three local breweries. Tour the historic Stevens Point Brewery, a local favorite since 1857, complete with samples. Then be sure to explore the Central Waters Brewery, in Amherst, ranked as one of the best breweries in the nation, or the newest micro-brewery O’so Brewing Company known for freestyle brewing. Despite their close proximity, each brewery has something different to offer in style, atmosphere and experience. If you’re still thirsty for more, head outdoors. Explore the best views in the county on foot or by bike and follow the Green Circle Trail, a 30.5-mile trail that circles the city of Stevens Point winding along the Wisconsin River, Little Plover River and other tributaries. The trailhead for the Green Circle Trail is located in the Schmeeckle Reserve, a 280-acre nature preserve on the University of Wisconsin — Stevens Point campus. Hike or bike the Ice Age Trail and wind through the hills and valleys once shaped by glaciers. More glacial trails framed by woods and wildlife are available at Standing Rocks County Park. Or take a journey down a once abandoned railroad bed, by foot, bike or horseback, where the 18-mile Tomorrow River State Trail brings the county’s history and natural beauty to the forefront. Birding is also varied and plentiful in Portage County. As part of the Central Sands Prairie Region of the Great Wisconsin Birding & Nature Trail, the area offers the Buena Vista Grasslands, Godfrey & Maybelle Erickson Audubon Park, Dewey Marsh State Natural Area, Iverson Park, Richard A. Hemp State Fishery Area, Schmeeckle Reserve, and the George W. Mead Wildlife Area.

Venture out on one of the many waterways in Portage County. More than 40 lakes, an array of rivers, streams, and flowages offer an opportunity to fish, kayak, canoe and swim. County parks, such as Lake DuBay, Lake Emily, Jordan Park and Collins Park offer a variety of uses, as well as camping. Need to rest your legs but still want to cover some ground? Experience area attractions, history, food, museums and more by staying on the road less traveled as you retrace the routes once forged in the past. Rediscover the roots of Portage County, by bike or car, by quietly winding through the countryside on the Polish Heritage Trail, where the first rural Polish settlement in

Wisconsin and second in the United States was established. Highway 51 is a road that links heritage, culture and explores the north/south corridor of the county and encourages your journey on the roads less traveled. Journey to the crossroads of Highway 51 and Highway B (in Plover), where time will allow you to reminisce of days gone by with unmarked roads and no map to call your own along the Yellowstone Trail. The road, once marked by yellow stones, was the first cross-country route from Plymouth Rock to Puget Sound. Or, forego modern transportation and explore the countryside on horseback at the Wild West Campground & Corral. www.StevensPointAr ea.com

Hungry for something other than the traditional Wisconsin Fish Fry, but still want an authentic Wisconsin supper club setting? Visit Two Lakes Restaurant, and try the famous drunken chicken and traditional Italian dinner, nestled in the countryside between two lakes.

Discover the roots of Portage County first hand by visiting historical sites throughout the county. The Portage County Historical Society operates several museums with rotating exhibits and events that are open to the public. Heritage Park in Plover, the Beth Israel Synagogue and the Historic Fire House #2 in Stevens Point and the Rising Star Mill in Nelsonville offer a unique look at the area’s history. he Yellowstone Trail was established and stretched from “Plymouth Rock to Puget Sound.” Between 1915, when the Yellowstone Trail Association extended the Trail to Chicago, and in the 1930s the Yellowstone Trail served Wisconsin from Kenosha to Hudson. The Yellowstone Trail enters Portage County from the east in the quaint Village of Amherst. Should your journey include an overnight stay, the Amherst Inn B&B is a Victorian gothic style house built in 1887. Continuing on County B into the Village of Plover, a visit to Heritage Park reveals an authentic Yellowstone Trail cabin amongst the other period buildings gathered from around the county. Traveling north on Business 51 motorists enter the City of Stevens Point, home of the Stevens Point Brewery which has a rich heritage of

xperience area attractions, history, food, museums, and more by staying on the road less traveled. Highway 51 is a road that links heritage, culture, and the Northwoods of Wisconsin to southern Louisiana. Traveling through six states, Highway 51 creates a pathway for travelers to explore the many cultures, cuisines and nostalgia of Wisconsin. Fifteen communities along Highway 51 in Wisconsin have come together, to emphasize the joy of the journey. All along Highway 51, travelers will experience the culture, cuisine and quirks that are part of each community. Highway 51 includes the stories of Abraham Lincoln, railroads, Elvis Presley and Graceland, blues music, industry icons, civil rights, and plantation life. There’s a wealth of diverse cultures, traditions, music, and food stretching from the American Heartland to the Deep South. Crossing into Portage County on Highway 51 brings you into the heart of Wisconsin. Getting to the center of the journey is the best part, especially when it’s nestled amidst an abundance of green space and waterways, highlighted by recreational activities, industry, and heritage. This portion of the route is dotted with art and culture, with just a hint of beer from our local breweries. Learn more about the stories along Highway 51, or create one of your own, by planning your journey online at www.explorehwy51.com or by stopping by the Stevens Point Area Visitor Information Center at exit 161 to pick up a copy of the Journey Journal and Passport. isconsin’s conservation history and leadership has a long successful tradition. With leaders including Aldo Leopold, John Muir, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Gaylord Nelson, Wisconsin has proven its commitment to the environment time and time again. Locally, the Stevens Point area is home to the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame, honoring the people who worked to preserve the very things that make our state unique, and the Midwest Renewable Energy Association’s Renew the Earth Institute. For more information about Travel Green Wisconsin certified businesses, please visit: www.travelgreenwisconsin.com/about/certified.htm To protect the environment, the very greenspaces and waterways that define our area and make it desirable to visitors and residents, it will take continued effort and support from individuals, businesses and the community. Portage County by its nature is positioned perfectly to embrace these concepts. Our green space infrastructures are no coincidence. Citizen and governmentally led stewardship of our natural resources, along with strong support from local advocacy groups have maintained an exceptionally high quality of life and sense of place. — Look for the leaf symbol at the end of the listings of participating members of Travel Green Wisconsin. Travel Green Wisconsin is a voluntary program that reviews, certifies and recognizes tourism businesses and organizations that have made a commitment to continuously improve their operations in order to reduce their environmental impact.

CHUCK NASON President, CEO - Worzalla Publishing People might think that Worzalla Publishing would consider their most important resource to be paper. But Chuck Nason, CEO of this 114-year-old, employee-owned company, credits their success to the loyalty, dedication and ingenuity of their employees. Chuck knows, as do other Portage County business leaders, that the region’s most valuable resource is our people. You can’t build a business without the commitment of every single employee. And you can’t build a thriving community without the involvement of every government and civic leader, parent, little league coach, educator and business owner. We know that to sustain our success, we must groom the next generation of business leaders by providing them an opportunity to develop their skills. We’ve got something special here, and we’re darn proud of it. Call, or visit our website, to learn more about relocating or expanding your business to Portage County.
