PANTUN IN MOTION

How does it feel to fly First Class with Malaysia Airlines and to peruse its Golden Lounge?

Visual artist Marie Hugo was inspired by how the Malay form of poetry, the pantun, was popularised in Europe by her ancestor, the French poet, novelist and statesman Victor Hugo. The result was Pantun Forest, an art installation featuring pantuns in French, English, Malay and Jawi script, which was showcased at the Art In The Park exhibition in Kuala Lumpur in October. Hugo, who spoke exclusively to Going Places prior to her First Class red-eye flight to Paris, also presented an art piece to Malaysia Airlines’ Golden Lounge. The meeting of the East and the West may also refer to your familial lineage traced back to the Dutch occupation of the Malaysian state of Malacca, as well as to Victor Hugo’s penchant for the pantun. Do you feel a connection to Malaysia?

It is a lovely experience, giving me a completely different outlook towards airports and flying. It’s almost like lounging around in a 5-star hotel. I have to say, the famous Malaysian Hospitality – it is very true, a reality – not a myth. Tell us a bit about the art piece you are presenting to Malaysia Airlines. What does it represent?

The name for it is Pantun For Malaysia Airlines. I thought the visual was very appropriate, with the Earth in the middle representing travels all over the world, from the East to the West, and the sky representing air travel and, of course, Malaysia Airlines. The pantun, about the meeting of the East and the West was written by me during a sleepless night on a full moon. My English version was translated into Malay by a friend living in Penang.

When I was told about the pantun and the connection to my ancestor, it was very interesting to hear. I really enjoyed doing the installation and the resulting artwork was like walking in a forest, quite mysterious. Meanwhile, it is my children who have ties to the Westerhouts of Malaccan history on their father’s side, but it was interesting to explore that part of our family. What do you like most about Malaysia?

The many different ethnicities here. It really feels like the heart of Asia. I also like how everyone is very kind and compassionate to each other, and there is a mentality here to keep close to nature. The next time I am in Malaysia, I would very much like to meet some of the native tribes here.

CODESHARE

FRENCH CONNECTION Malaysia Airlines has signed an agreement with TGVAIR, allowing passengers based in French provinces and travelling on Malaysia Airlines to enjoy a new train/flight service departing from 19 TGV train stations. The new service offers simplicity, flexibility, time saving, and better value for Malaysia Airlines passengers, who can check in at their departure TGV train station to their final destination.

GO ONE UP

Malaysia Airlines is offering eligible guests the opportunity to upgrade their seats at their own determined price. Based on forecasted empty seats available on First and Business Class, guests with confirmed Economy or Business class tickets will receive an email from Plusgrade within 24 hours of their purchase informing them of available seats in the next higher class. They are then invited to submit an offer which can be made through the MHupgrade system.

CHEESE, PLEASE Learn and indulge at these cheese-making holidays Text Tracey Petherick

INDIA

An organic cheese-making farm where ‘farm animals get priority’, Acres Wild in the Nilgiri Hills in southern India is a haven of well-nurtured nature. Run by the charming and hospitable Mansoor and Tina, the farm and its cottages are tucked on a hillside where you can bask in spectacular views of tea plantations, blue mountains and dense jungle. Keep your eyes peeled for wild birds and animals that compete for space with the farm’s dairy cattle. You can help to make bread, soap and jam, or get stuck in with milking cows, feeding the animals and planting the fields. But cheese-making courses are the real draw of a farm stay here, run by self-taught (and now expert) cheese maker Tina. The cheeses include Gouda, Monterey Jack, Ricotta and Gruyere. Leave with a detailed understanding of the art of making gourmet, artisan cheese. acres-wild.com

ANCIENT WONDER From the Parthenon to other ancient ruins, the past looms large in Athens Text Helen Ochyra Illustration Sio Yean

a 8am There’s no denying it: The Acropolis is one of Europe’s most crowded tourist sites. Avoid the worst of the shuffling hordes by arriving as soon as it opens at 8am and heading straight up the smooth marble paths to the Parthenon. Take in Pericles’ colossal building, a temple to Athena that dates back to the 5th century BC and whose columns tower overhead, before looking down on the Theatre of Dionysus, a vast 17,000-seat venue whose stage has seen masterpieces by Sophocles and Aristophanes, among others. b 9.30am In 2009, the magnificent Acropolis Museum (theacropolismuseum.gr/en) opened and was immediately

heralded as one of Europe’s best museums. Stroll through its light-filled interior, pausing at marble statues and sculptures by Greece’s greatest artists, to reach the top floor and a complete representation of the frieze and metopes as they would have been arranged on the Parthenon. Many marbles are missing, some because they’ve never been found, others because they’re in the British Museum in London. c 11pm Get a quick taste of the Greek Isles by getting pleasantly lost in the narrow whitewashed alleyways of Anafiotika, which burst with bright bougainvillea and tumble down the slopes of the Acropolis toward the ancient streets of Plaka. You could easily snap the perfect

all juicy plump tomatoes and crisp leaves, before tasting the perfect moussaka, cooked with tender lamb, and a smoky chicken souvlaki, a perfect end to your perfect visit.

d 12.30pm Take a gourmet tour around the country without leaving the capital, with a buffet lunch at Manas Kouzina Kouzina. Chef Thodoris Fourakis serves dishes such as cuttlefish with spinach and aubergine fritters, each labelled with the Greek region it comes from. Even the drinks are Greek; try an Ouzon soda.

f 5.30pm Finish an afternoon’s exploration at By the Glass (bytheglass. gr), one of the city’s newest bars, which sells only Greek wines. Introductory glasses (25ml) start at just USD0.50; the setting in one of the arcades For the true in the Syntagma museum junkie, area is beautiful and blissfully buy the USD10 Athens smoke-free.

e 2.30pm Walk off lunch by pounding the streets of Plaka, the city’s most attractive quarter and one that is largely pedestrianised. Go where the mood takes you – though be sure this includes the forest of columns that is the Roman Forum and the Byzantine church

g 7pm Food is allimportant in Athens, so end your time here on a high with delicious traditional dishes at Tzitzikas kai Mermigas. Tuck into a Greek salad,

I

t is almost 11pm, but there’s still enough light to read a map and take photographs here in downtown Riga. This is northern Europe in midsummer in the capital of Latvia, which joined the European Union in 2004 and adopted the euro this year. Although Germany and Russia occupied this Baltic state for long periods, Latvia retained its own distinct culture and language. The 800-year-old capital is modern, prosperous, and a delight to wander around. Only independent from Russia since 1991, the country has embraced consumerism with prestigious fashion brands from Armani to Zara seen around the city centre. As a starting point, and for a scenic look at the city from above, I buy a roughly USD9 ticket to the 72-metre spire of St Peter's Church. The elevator carries me to the small open area at the top, where I get a 360-degree view of the old town of Vecriga, the park, the Daugava River, and the Art Nouveau district. Just across the tracks stand the five Zeppelin hangars of the expansive Central Market, set out like orderly loaves of bread on a vast table. I start my exploration of Riga wandering

around the historical centre, which has its contemporary, quirky side. A UNESCO World Heritage Site set between the river and the moat-turned-canal, it’s a treasure trove of a great variety of ancient architecture and cobbled streets. Here, I pass fragments of sturdy medieval walls and towers, squares, church steeples, red-brick Gothic or Romanesque-style churches, Baroque townhouses and even stolid Sovietstyle buildings. An impressive collection of public art and sculpture is displayed throughout the area, from the sacred and profane to modern realist or comical. In Livu Square, popular for its outdoor restaurants, massive contemporary stone sculptures of animals and people larger than steamer trunks are for sale. Even my hotel, the Astor Riga, is an example of the old and new blending seamlessly. Set on the edge of Vecriga, opposite the Powder Tower and across the street from Bastion Hill Park, it is an ideal base for sightseeing. Built in 1876 in what the hotel describes as an ‘eclectic style’, the two striking buildings were renovated and opened as a four-star hotel in 2013. Breakfast in the elegant dining room includes cold cuts and cheeses, several types of bread, pastries, fruit yoghurt drinks, and local specialties. Smoked salmon, herring and dill pickles make up a typical northern European breakfast. Bastion Hill, a lush green belt across the street from the Astor, divides the old city from the Art Nouveau and modern areas. Numerous walking paths lead through the well-groomed grounds, past a rock garden, a waterfall, a colourful swan house and bridges crossing the narrow canal. Tour boats cruise the canal and river encircling the old town, while courting couples rent

 small private rowboats. This far north, the short summer means long days, and locals come out to savour the sunshine with great enthusiasm. They stroll the paths, rest on the park benches to soak up the sun, and admire the bright flowerbeds. Beyond the park lies the world’s largest collection of flamboyant Art Nouveau buildings. An architecture, interior design  from and decorative arts style that flourished about 1890 to almost the start of the First World War, Art Nouveau thrived in Riga, one of Europe’s wealthiest cities at the time. Rows of attractive, ornate building facades display great details, with bas-reliefs, floral patterns, wedding cake sculptures, faces and other elaborate embellishments. The buildings are works of art with no two alike, giving an evocative sense of times past. The Art Nouveau Museum in the former home of a prominent local architect provides an enchanting representation of a time when luxuries like electricity and plumbing were just being introduced. Here, visitors can don period hats and pose for photos. Just across the street, the Art Nouveau Riga souvenir shop sells period postcards, handmade façade replicas, jewellery, trinkets, and other memorabilia. In this cold climate, popular souvenirs

found in other shops include hand-knitted socks, scarves, caps and other practical clothing. Amber, the precious stone found along the Baltic coast, is sold as stones, beads, jewellery and ornaments. Stylish, modern scarves made of natural materials such as Baltic linen combined with silk, mohair, and wool are also available. In the pienene (dandelion) shop on Kungu iela (street) near the tourist office, I find attractive hand-made linen tablecloths and table runners. Here, an enthusiastic saleswoman introduces a unique product - amber fabric. A new technology of intertwining amber with linen creates a unique fabric that supposedly has healing properties. An amber fiber shawl is USD155. Crossing the railway tracks by an underpass, I reach the five cavernous German WWI Zeppelin hangars that house Riga’s large, impressive Central Market. In this UNESCO World Heritage Site near the train and bus stations, more than 3,000 stalls sell a remarkable collection of local and imported products. Vendors display endless varieties of meats, seafood, cheeses, fresh vegetables and fruit, pickles, local and exotic speciality food, clothes, crafts and souvenirs. One hangar is all fresh and cured meat, another is a fish pavilion, with an incredible assortment of fresh, raw, smoked, dried and canned seafood. In one pavilion, locals line up at an Uzbek bakery making naan bread, cooked on the walls of a big traditional open oven. The sweet fragrance of fresh strawberries, smoky aroma of sausages, appealing whiff

of fresh dill and garlic from the pickling section, and salty scent of fish are too tempting. I buy two dill pickles, and they’re delicious. Children Appetite whetted, I head back to the participating old city for lunch. For ambience and in the Song atmosphere, a local directs me to Ambiente and Dance (ambiente.lv/en) in the old city, with its Celebration, which takes delightfully dated feeling. The restaurant place once in claims to serve Art Nouveau cuisine – five years although no one can say quite what that is. But with its distinct period rooms – the Autumn extends office, library, living room, kitchen and its golden dining room – Ambiente excels in both hues, lending a kaleidoscope of ambience and cuisine. For lunch, I choose colours a superb duck breast smoked in juniper berries with celery root puree and rhubarb balsamic sauce. They like the nightlife in this lively city, and in summer, locals and tourists pack the restaurants and bars until late. I start one evening with a view from the 26th floor of the Radisson Blu Hotel Skyline Bar. Arriving fortuitously at Happy Hour, I savour another great vista of the old city with its verdigris roofs, spires and steeples, the golden domes of the Orthodox Cathedral, and the large, new glass National Library or the ‘Castle of Light’ across the river. Riga is very much a party town, a destination for stag and hen parties from across Europe. here’s always a miracle on 34th Street; Harry and Sally keep falling for each other; and Will Ferrell, or rather Buddy the Elf, discovers that New York is the place to be for winter, not the North Pole. There’s a reason why so many holiday films take place in New York: Whether you celebrate Christmas, the Winter Solstice, or Chanukah, no other place is livelier or more festive than the Big Apple. We round up the places to visit and the things to do while you’re here.

1

ICE, ICE BABY

Skating out in the open is a classic New York City holiday experience.

Wollman Rink, Central Park Whether it’s blanketed in snow or glinting under the winter sun, the city’s green lung is a mustvisit. Skating in Central Park is romance personified. wollmanskatingrink.com

Rockefeller Center, Fifth Avenue between 49th & 50th Street With the iconic Christmas tree that harbours over 30,000 lights, this landmark is the hub of New York’s Christmas spirit. Though expensive and crowded, the small ice rink here is an unforgettable experience, especially if you make it before the Christmas lights go out at 11:30pm.

Bryant Park, 40th Street between Fifth & Sixth Avenue New York’s only free rink (USD15 if you rent skates) attracts huge crowds. This popular midtown lunch spot is perfect for people-watching. wintervillage.org/skate

The Standard Ice Rink, 848 Washington Street The fancy Standard Hotel’s rink is more for adults, with a definite hipster vibe. SHOPPING

Whether you’ve been naughty or nice, you’ll be treated to visually stunning and emotionally evocative window displays at the city’s many shopping addresses. Each year, department stores and shops outdo one another with themed displays created by noted stylists, artists and cultural icons. Stroll along the bustling avenues and treat yourself to the trickedout displays. Some people head to the museums, but others brave the cold to ogle these gorgeous shop fronts. Of course, you should also go inside to check out the shopping too: Barneys New York, 660 Madison Avenue at 61st Street Street-smart and smart-alecky, this upscale store’s holiday windows are pop art in practice, with winks at popular culture. t’s easy to imagine luxury sports cars lazily cruising down sleepy Kep’s newly designed promenade. The flanking golden beach is full of the upper echelons of Khmer and colonial French society, with a flurry of men and women clad in the latest fashions basking in the sun. On the other side of the promenade, sprawling villas with European minimalist architecture peek out from tropical forests that hug the hills rising gently from the shore. Horses and carriages carry Cambodia’s elite along the quiet streets lined with cafés, restaurants and boutiques serving fine cuisine and upmarket wares. This is a picture of life during quaint Kep’s heyday. Throughout Cambodia’s Golden Age of the 1950s and 1960s, this was a town reserved for the rich. Dubbed the Kep-Sur-Mer, or the Saint Tropez of South East Asia, it was labelled an exclusive getaway for those who could afford it. The beachside town’s popularity gained traction in the 1920s, thanks to the French colonials. After Cambodia gained independence from France in 1953, the late King Father Sihanouk was adamant Kep was to remain a retreat for the rich. He recruited the country’s finest architects, led by revered Vann Molyvann, who studied architecture in Paris, to give the town a new, Le Corbusier-inspired design, including the construction of his own summer villa in 1964.

However, the dream life was shortlived. Located just 20 kilometres from the Vietnamese border, Kep was left vulnerable during the late 1960s, and under the Vietnam War suffered heavy U.S. bombing. By 1972, the majority of residents had fled the town, which became a Khmer Rouge stronghold under the communist regime. Like everything else in Cambodia, Kep was stripped of its wealth, prosperity and identity under Pol Pot’s reign of terror. It wasn’t until 2001 that peace was restored and one of the last pockets of Khmer Rouge soldiers was driven out of Kep’s jungles and mountains. Since then, Kep has slowly rebuilt itself and today is making a comeback as the Cannes of Cambodia. Derelict mansions have been restored into chic boutique hotels and private homes; the late King Father Sihanouk’s wife, Queen Monique, has a residence in town, while a new generation of restaurants is opening. Travellers are rediscovering the tranquil beauty that in a bygone era attracted high society. Spearheading this recent resurrection

of Kep’s opulent past is Knai Bang Chatt. The exclusive resort opened in 2006 after radical renovation work to breathe new life into three unique red, grey and sky blue, modernist villas built between 1962 and 1965 by Molyvann protégés. Boasting just 11 rooms overlooking manicured lawns, an infinity pool with views of the Gulf of Thailand and fine dining in the form of The Strand restaurant, Knai Bang Chatt harks back to the town’s heyday. General Manager Joffrey Gris says, “There’s something very mystic about Kep; something pure surrounding its simplicity. We have been very lucky to be able to resurrect these stunning villas from ruin. They are amazing architectural feats and an important part of Cambodia’s history.” The town’s other major beach resort sits next door in the form of Kep Sailing Club. Offering a range of water sports and sailing, as well as a volleyball court and other activities, the venue proves popular on weekends when the club comes to life with the sound of music in the evenings. Reminiscent of a place you’d find on the French Riviera, the club is perfect

for sipping cocktails while watching the sunset. And a wooden pier that delicately juts out into the sea provides the perfect spot to watch the sun slowly sink into the water while enjoying a romantic dinner for two. While Kep’s sleepy vibe makes it easy to kick back and do nothing, the town offers an abundance of activities giving an interesting insight into the area. Kep National Park is 50 square kilometres of jungle, tropical forest and rolling hills. A tuk tuk or moto ride will take you to Led Zep Café, situated in a prime location on top of a hill with sweeping views of the sea across to neighbouring Vietnam and a smattering of idyllic islands. Here, visitors can also see an intriguing exhibition of old photos of life in the town during the Golden Age. Those interested in discovering the relics of Kep’s lost era can explore the remainders of the once glorious villas. The late King Father’s residence, perched on the crest of a hill overlooking the town’s bay, is one such place. With the grounds kept by a Khmer family who live on-site, you can explore and admire the

curvaceous walls and atriums, worn tiled floors, and arching ceilings for USD1. Standing at one of the many villas, sprawled with colourful graffiti by Belgian artist ROA, tour guide and Kep resident Song Sothy says, “These villas are still amazing to walk around. They show off a life that was once here and represent the high life that existed.” Kep’s prosperity stretches further back than the Golden Age. Famous in kitchens across the world is the Geographical Indication (GI)-certified Kampot pepper, which arrived from Kerala more than 800 years ago. The region’s fertile lands make ripe pickings for pepper plants, and the countryside is filled with farms growing black, green, white and red peppercorns. Nestled among rolling countryside about 12 kilometres out of town sits The Vine Retreat. The tranquil eco-lodge is set in sprawling grounds that are home to tropical gardens, an organic garden, salt water pool, newly built yoga school and small pepper plantation with 500 plants. Manager and pepper expert Theary Sot says, “Kampot pepper is one of the highest qualities in the world. It rose to notoriety when the French were here. They would use it in famous restaurants in Paris and its flavour soon spread across Europe.” It’s the pepper’s unique spicy kick that has helped push Kep’s signature dish of crab and Kampot pepper to fame. A short stroll from the beach, which last year saw tonnes of white sand delivered to create a pristine 25-metre-wide stretch of sand, sits the Crab Market. Here, women wade into shallow waters to bring in the crab baskets that

 bob in the water. On shore, crustaceans are flung onto scales before being passed onto the myriad of stalls selling fresh crab and prawns alongside barbecued squid and fresh fish. Next to the market sits a row of restaurants serving a mouthwatering selection of fresh seafood. La Baraka has proved popular since opening four years ago. Owner Cedric Ignatio says, “The town has developed at a fast pace since I moved here but remains a nice place for people to come and relax. Kep is truly beautiful. It is very relaxed, has amazing food, views and history, and the people are always smiling.” And of course, that’s the other reason visitors keep returning to the town: the famous Cambodian smile. “It really is the people here who give Kep its real charm,” Gris adds, pointing to one of the resort’s employees who is undoubtedly wearing the most welcoming of grins.

Island Dreams

Investing in a Malaysian paradise

The opportunity to set up an all-villa boutique resort on a paradise island in the South China Sea was the calling that Cher Chua Lassalvy found too good to resist. So in 2012, with a baby on the way, Cher returned to Malaysia with her husband Laurent to set up Batu Batu on Pulau Tengah, off the waters of Johor. “Batu Batu was a dream for us,” explained Cher. “The project, along with wanting to be closer to my family and experiencing life in Malaysia, were the reasons that brought us back.” Why set up a resort?

Our family had an interest in the island and we know the islands off Malaysia’s east coast are largely undiscovered. We saw an opportunity for a low-key but well-executed intimate boutique resort which blended into the island and allowed visitors to experience its beauty without spoiling it.

We felt there was a market for this and we had the perfect location to set this up. What appealed to you the most about Batu Batu?

The challenge of creating something special from an undiscovered marine park was very exciting. It was also important that we created a development which respected this natural habitat, the environment as well as the communities around it whilst creating employment opportunities too. How did TalentCorp help in your return?

TalentCorp has been extremely helpful in guiding us on the Malaysian immigration procedures. My husband, who is French, is now a Permanent Resident in Malaysia thanks to the REP facility. There’s also an online forum supported byTalentCorp, outstation.my, which helped us a lot.

Are you happy you made your return?

Yes, of course. Despite the initial challenge of starting literally from scratch, we have managed to build an environmentallyfriendly resort that has managed to draw in clientele from around the globe to our little part of the world. This has been highly rewarding to us both professionally and personally.

The REP facilitates the return of Malaysian professionals from overseas to contribute to Malaysia’s development. It also facilitates Permanent Resident status for the foreign spouse and children of successful applicants. To find out if you are eligible for the REP, visit www.talentcorp.com.my.

Batu Batu is located on Pulau Tengah, a private island paradise. The resort was set up in April 2012, and has 22 villas set in the island’s natural environment. It takes approximately 20 minutes by speedboat to get to Pulau Tengah from Mersing in Johor.

A few metres away, their parents stand by a traditional wooden-roofed market stall, sipping on glühwein (mulled wine). Some watch the children and laugh; others are deep in conversation while a few women stroll away from the group to peruse the wares on offer in the sprawling market. The sweet aroma of glühwein and roasting chestnuts drifts through the cold night air, and in the distance, a children’s choir singing Christmas hymns can be heard. Christmas in Switzerland is truly magical – and the Christmas markets are where the fairy tale starts. Peppered all over the country, there are plenty of markets to discover, from the very big to the very small. They all share the same basic premise – Christmas-themed paraphernalia for sale, delicious local food to devour, speciality refreshments like bratwurst and glühwein to sample, and plenty of events to keep kids and adults entertained. Historically, the markets date back to the Middle Ages and are held throughout Advent, with most opening in late November and staying open until Christmas Eve (some stay open a few days after Christmas). The month leading up to

Christmas isn’t just about markets though; they’re about celebrating the festivities in assorted ways. Visitors will find plenty of Christmas-themed displays, imitation St Nicholas strolling through snow-dusted streets, picturesque ice rinks, street parades, pop-up cheese fondue huts and more. This special period is a time when residents and travellers alike can indulge in an enchanted European winter. Of course, Christmas markets offer the ultimate winter fantasy; the principal ones are found in Basel, Bern, Lucerne and Zürich.

BASEL

Located at the frontier between France and Germany, and tapping directly into the Rhine, Basel is one of Switzerland’s most beautiful cities. The architecture is reminiscent of a fairy tale on any day – add the atmosphere that comes with a Christmas market and snowfall (the city is usually snow-clad by early December) and it’s a truly mesmerising location. There are two main markets in Basel – at Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz – that are considered the prettiest by many. The historic Barfüsserplatz is home to Christmas Street, where 100 brightly illuminated pine trees flank more than 140 vendors.

LUCERNE

The Lake Lucerne region in the heart of the Alps is particularly beautiful in winter. Lucerne is known as the City of Lights – and it amazes during Advent when it presents itself in an illumination of glittering Christmas sparkles. The markets peppered throughout the picturesque city offer visitors the chance to immerse themselves in a winter fairy tale. A major market is located on Franziskanerplatz in front of the St. Maria Church. Switzerland’s most populated city is home to one of Europe’s biggest indoor Christmas markets, located at the main train station. The highlight is the extravagant 15-metre-tall Christmas tree. Lavishly decorated with 5,000 Swarovski crystals, it’s continuously encircled by awed sightseers trying to capture the entire tree in one snap. A tree of a different variety is located at the Christmas Market by the Singing Christmas Tree in Werdmühleplatz. This interestingly quirky tree has no shimmering crystals beautifying it – instead it comes with little singing children. The red-and-green-donned youngsters clamber into their spots inside the custom-built tree and sing carols in the evenings – a must-visit and one of Switzerland’s most unique Christmas experiences.

Other great Christmas markets to visit: Framed by Lake Geneva and the Alps, the Christmas market of Montreux features 150 decorated and illuminated chalets with vendors peddling regional temptations. Nestled in the mountains that cluster at the foot of Lake Zürich, Einsiedeln feels like a completely different destination. The picturesque town has over 130 stalls that line the main street and the abbey square, making it one of the largest markets in the country. Bremgarten is a little town steeped in history. It’s a little off the beaten track, and consequently the markets here are mainly visited by Swiss nationals, which makes for an authentic Christmas market experience.

ENGINEERING THE FUTURE UCSI’s engineering faculty produces quality graduates for the betterment of society The Faculty of Engineering, Technology and Built Environment (FETBE) at UCSI University does not just produce students well-versed in the theories of engineering and architecture, but more importantly, those who are able to make meaningful contributions in their respective fields. It is no surprise, then, that both staff and students of the faculty are passionate about sustainable engineering. Through continuous learning and research, the faculty is constantly making headway in research on harnessing and harvesting sustainable engineering resources for a better future.

TURNING WASTE INTO COMMODITIES

One pertinent research project conducted by UCSI’s engineering faculty involves finding ways to convert discarded substances such as rice husks and empty palm oil fruit bunches into new forms of feasible energy. At the recent 5th International Engineering Invention and Innovation Exhibition (i-ENVEX) 2014, UCSI engineering students bagged the Gold Medal, triumphing over 87 other entries from local and foreign institutions of higher learning including from Korea, Taiwan, Croatia, Indonesia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Iraq and Romania.

Chemical engineering students Chin Chun Man, Selvaraja Guala Segaran and Teoh Kai Wen impressed a panel of internationally recognised Malaysian researchers with their handiwork that converts castoff palm oil sludge into bio-oil, a liquid fuel that can be feedstock for fuel, and bio-char, a kind of charcoal that may be used as a heat source, removes heavy metal in wastewater and helps increase soil fertility in low pH soils. Meanwhile, UCSI chemical engineering graduate student Kelvin Lim Yong Hui is currently conducting research on turning cellulose in empty palm oil fruit bunches into nano crystallised cellulose, which has the potential to be used as carriers for pharmaceutical drug molecules, as well as a treatment ingredient for wastewater. Stipends from UCSI research grants as well as supervision under an experienced assistant professor will substantially help Lim’s research, in turn benefitting the community as well as humanity. Committed to the field

of scientific and engineering research, UCSI’s chemical engineering students are constantly in demand to assist in research conducted by industry partners, including on highly confidential research on biofuel with enormous commercial potential. As a testament to the quality of its students as well curriculum, UCSI looks forward to continue to encourage and inspire more future researchers and contributors in the engineering and scientific fields, working together towards a better world. ucsiuniversity.edu.my

The school was started by Mrs Alice Smith at her home in Jalan Eaton, Kuala Lumpur, in 1946. At the end of World War II, Mrs Smith started teaching her neighbours’ children, then her own daughter and soon attracted the children of other expatriates. When she left Malaya for Australia in 1950, the parents of the school’s students formally incorporated the Alice Smith Schools Association. The founding student body, comprising British, Irish, New Zealand and Australian nationals, was later joined by children of all nationalities.

With close to 70 years of history, the Alice Smith School has a rich web of alumni globally. One of the first schools in Malaysia and earliest in South East Asia and wider afield to be accredited as a British School Overseas by the Department for Education in London, the Alice Smith school again passed a recent inspection with flying colours and continues to be accredited as an OUTSTANDING school! The school is also a member of FOBISIA (Federation of British International Schools in Asia), COBIS (Council of British International Schools), ISC (Independent Schools Council), EARCOS (East Asia Region Council of Schools), and CIS (Council of International Schools). The School resides on two campuses - the Primary Campus caters to students from Pre-school to Year 6, while the beautiful purpose-

built Secondary Campus in Equine Park situated on 25 acres of land caters to students from Years 7 to 13. PENANG ROAD FAMOUS TEOCHEW CHENDUL, PENANG

Tucked away in an alley off the busy Jalan Penang, this cendol stall has been in business since 1936. That’s a long time to perfect a family recipe, and the result is a bowl of ice-cold goodness. The cendol here is creamy with finely shaved ice, and generously filled with kidney beans, homemade cendol, fresh coconut milk and palm sugar. It’s possible for a sit-down at the Joo Hooi coffee shop next door, but most punters have their cendol on their feet. The business has spread its wings to branches in shopping malls in Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Johor.

CENDOL PAK AKOB, SELANGOR

Situated across the mosque in Section 16, Shah Alam, this residential favourite takes its cendol seriously. Stall owner Pak Akob uses the freshest ingredients and makes his own blend of sweet brown syrup. A standard bowl comes with a heaping of cendol and red beans, but Pak Akob offers a variety of fillings such as pulut (glutinous rice) and peanuts. For a taste of the unusual, go for the tapai, a sweet-tasting fermented rice that somehow works with the creamy sweetness of this dessert.

Mobile Eateries Modern food trucks are red-hot additions to the Klang Valley’s dining scene Text Tan Lee Kuen Photos SooPhye

very night except for Tuesdays, a black truck pulls into a parking bay in the suburb of Subang Jaya. Its sides swing open, plastic tables and chairs are arranged around the vehicle, and a gas stove is started up. The smell of delicious food comes wafting out. The Little Fat Duck is open for business, from 8pm to midnight, offering pasta at less than USD2 a pop and a fork-tender chicken confit, braised for 24 hours to flavourful perfection, for about USD3.50 each. Malaysians are not unfamiliar with food trucks, having had their beloved rojak, cendol and char kway teow from

out of the back of these vehicles. But the second wave of this culinary venture takes the food to a different level. The modern food truck offers French, Italian and Mexican cuisine, served in recyclable boxes and at affordable prices. It’s a food scene that’s growing as more trucks join the brigade, lured by cheaper start-up costs and the freedom to try out new concepts that a brick-and-mortar restaurant cannot afford. Little Fat Duck (facebook.com/ littlefatduckmalaysia) owners Adel bin Muhamed Ishak and his partner Adi Ong didn’t have any F&B or cooking experience before venturing into the food truck business. a public relations and marketing background, while Adi was dealing in other businesses. When a mutual friend wanted to get rid of his food truck, previously used to service travelling circuses, the pair jumped at the opportunity to start something of their own. Adel borrowed his mother’s recipe for bolognaise, and the rest they experimented and tested on friends. Their aglio oglio and chicken confit are now bestsellers. “On the first day, we didn’t know how to store the food properly in the truck. We drove about 100 metres and all the pasta sauces fell on the floor. It was a mess!” recounts Adel, who now speaks with the wisdom of the experienced. The learning curve may have been steep, but Little Fat Duck now enjoys a popular following. As we are chatting, the La Famiglia truck drives past to set up its operations in another part of the area. The concept of this truck was inspired by the movie The Godfather, and its menu revolves around six different pasta dishes, with a side order of wedges or fries. La Famiglia (facebook.com/ vivalafamiglia) has two shifts: Nights

 are at Subang from 9pm to 1am, and at lunchtime, the truck is in Damansara Heights, servicing students and office workers. Co-owner Syazwan bin Khairuddin operates the nearby Gloria Jeans outlet in Menara I & P, and he works long hours servicing the two businesses. “One of my biggest challenges is manpower because of the two shifts. By the time I’ve closed for the night and am done cleaning up, it’s four in the morning,” says Syazwan. Meanwhile, Curbside Cantina (instagram.com/curbsidecantinakl) is a newcomer to the food truck scene, but the husband-and-wife team helming the operations has been in the food and beverage business for years. Awangku Irawan and Noreen Ramli owned a restaurant, The Pink Sage, before closing that to shift their attention to cocktailtype catering. According to Noreen, their food truck, which sells Mexican food, is a natural extension of their existing catering business. Business has been good since they started operations in June this year. “The response has been really great. People from all walks of life have been so

keen,” says Noreen. The chicken quesa-taco is their bestselling item, while the fish tacos are a throwback from their old operations. “Our former customers kept asking for them, so we listened, and fish tacos are back on the menu,” says Noreen. While Curbside Cantina can be spotted in Kuala Lumpur’s Bangsar area, it keeps an irregular schedule. Fans follow the cheery chilli-red truck on Instagram. Similarly, Dina Blazevic operated two restaurants - Czech eatery Dubrovnik and the Amadeus bistro - before launching Flaming Wheels. Custom-made into the likes of a muscular monster truck, the kitchen in its metallic belly whips up gastronomic Western and Asian specialties for an appreciative crowd. Among its offerings are Baronne’s penne chicken parmigiana, chilli beef nachos and Guy’s Lamb Meatballs. Flaming Wheels (myflamingwheels. com) can be found in different university campuses outside the city on weekdays; its whereabouts are published on Facebook, Twitter and a website. events or private functions. Its kitchen can cater to 1,000 people. “When we started, there were not many food trucks, but now they are slowly coming up. It’s a good time as Kuala Lumpur is expanding rapidly and there are many locations without many eateries around. Also people are looking for more affordable food, but without compromising the quality. On the food truck you can achieve this as your fixed

costs are much lower than a restaurant,” says Blazevic. Challenges abound however. Good parking spots, permit issues and bad weather are the main concerns, not to mention truck breakdowns and accidents. The latest spate of monsoonal rain means the food trucks cannot operate at their regular time slots. Curbside Cantina circumvents this problem by shifting their operations from dinner to lunch, while they continue to cater for events at nights. For some, the cost of running a food truck outweighs its positives. Alan Yeo’s Oishi Bento, offering bento boxes, lasted a year before he called it quits with his regular rounds. He now concentrates on his new undertaking, a permanent outlet called Big Hug Burger (facebook. com/BigHugBurgers), and the truck is a marketing extension of his business, servicing festivals and events around town. For others, the food truck is a stepping stone to bigger culinary adventures. One of the food truck pioneers, The Humble Chef, swapped the truck for a brick-andmortar café in Damansara Heights. Little Fat Duck is opening a kiosk in Mid Valley Megamall, a large shopping mall, and launching a second food truck.

Bahagian jari-jari kakinya

FOR OVER SIX DECADES, VETERAN SHOEMAKER CHOOK WAH SUN HAS MADE FEET HEALTHY, HAPPY, AND PRETTY Pulling a measuring tape that hangs from his neck like a stethoscope, Chook Wah Sun measures the height of my ankle from my right sole, and makes a note in the prescription card. With his bespectacled academic outlook, Chook resembles a doctor more than a shoemaker. In fact, many foot doctors regularly recommend their patients to his shop in Taman Midah for custom-made shoes. “Most people have disproportionate feet so it is important to measure them and make the shoes fit accordingly,” he notes. “A good pair of shoes must provide adequate support, cushion, grip and most importantly, plenty of comfort. Custom-made shoes are tailored just for you so they will be comfortable.” Chook should know, having spent 65 years in the trade, with 18 of those operating out of San Lee Shoes, a modest shoplot that’s lined with rows of dance, sandals and walking footwear. The back of his shop serves as the workshop: a row of men on low stools bend over halffinished shoes surrounded by shelves of tanned hide, shoe lasts and halffinished shoes. It’s a scene that was common until the 1980s, before the advent of cheaper machine-operated manufacturers threatened the labour-intensive trade. While some parts of the shoes are machinestitched to save time today, the bulk of the work – designing, making the shoe mould, cutting scraps of fabric, glueing the pieces and sewing on beading – is manual. Presently, the bulk of San Lee’s order comes from making shoes for dancing, walking and orthopedic needs. While office or casual footwear is usually made of leather or rubber, dancing shoes are made with satin, suede or some glittery material. Because of the precision involved, it takes about 10 days for customers to get an order

completed. Prices start from USD55 depending on the materials used and the complexity of the features. The only son of Chinese migrants, Chook stopped schooling at 13 and learned the skill from a shoemaker in Menglembu, Ipoh. A quick learner, he opened his own shop at 19 but ventured out to work in Kuala Lumpur at 21. In 1969, Chook opened his first shop and made a name selling custom-made shoes for office wear, before moving to his present location. After taking up ballroom dancing in his 50s, he tried his hand at making dance shoes at the behest of his classmates. In 1994, he introduced dancing shoes under the Flash Dance label. They were a hit with dancers who were thrilled to be able to buy locally made shoes at reasonable prices. A live wire, Chook looks remarkably youthful for a 78 year old, especially when you consider the backbreaking nature of the work. He credits it to his daily morning walks, a routine he started in his 40s when severe back pain made ballroom dancing difficult. He studies magazines and watches television to learn the latest trends; he is now experimenting with creating silicone soles, which are all the rage. He is also sought after by designers who commission him to make shoes for competitions. His most memorable client is a Malay man who injured his foot in an accident. “He hobbled in on two crutches. The place where his toes were supposed to be was jagged, like a saw. I was still new at orthopedic shoes so we fine-tuned it several times before we were satisfied with a pair of boots that came with a hard front and fitted snugly. After one round of walking around my shop, only did he realize he was walking without his crutches! He hugged me until I was breathless,” Chook says, his eyes brightening.

Dia terus peluk saya eraterat,” katanya sambil bergenang air mata. “Apa lagi pekerjaan lain yang beri kamu peluang menggembirakan dan menyihatkan orang lain?” soalnya. Tell us about your debut album Love Temperature. S It took us about half a year to record this album. However, strictly speaking, it took us about two years to make because it includes some songs from our previous two mini albums. Love Temperature is like a compilation of our best songs. This album is about love and romantic relationships. F We believe love can be measured by temperature. For instance, when one has lost his/her feelings towards the other half, the relationship is cold. It’s at boiling point when both are deeply in love. That’s why the title is Love Temperature. What music do you listen to? Fuying I normally listen to western music, such as OneRepublic and Justin Timberlake. Recently I’ve been listening to a lot more acoustic songs –I really like some of Gabrielle Aplin’s tracks. Sam I’ve grown up listening to Faye Wong. Her songs have influenced me quite a lot. I still listen to her records in my free time. How did the two of you meet? S We both took part in the Halo Forest –Very Idol training course. F After that, we were asked to sing a demo for a local movie. We were told they’d either pick my version or Sam’s. Then we were asked to sing a version together and that was when the chemistry happened. Since then we’ve been a group. Describe each other in three words. S Fuying is fast, optimistic, confident. F Sam is melancholy, determined, relaxed. You’re both keen followers of fashion. Describe each other’s styles? F Sam is a fan of simplicity. He’s always going for something very simple such as a plain T-shirt, jeans and a cardigan. S Fuying is more adventurous and adds more personality to his outfits. The T-shirts he wears have patterns and prints on them – he’s more into the details. When touring, what essentials do you ensure you’ve got in your suitcase? F My laptop. Nowadays we all have our smartphones wherever we go, but having my laptop with me makes me feel safe. S For me… hand sanitiser! Haha! I’m too particular about cleanliness; everywhere I go I’ll wash my hands.

You’re both actors as well as musicians. What characters would you like to try as actors? S I would like to challenge myself to portray something that’s totally different from my personality. I would like to try some psychotic or schizophrenic character if possible. F For me, I would like to play a villain. Like Sam said, it’s always fun to challenge yourself to do something different from your own personality. And a villain character would allow me to legally do some bad or evil things. How does acting compare to singing? Which do you prefer? S Singing is more about how you express your feelings and emotions. F For acting you need to observe things that happen around you, things and details about the character you’re representing. To me, singing is something that allows you to release your own emotions. I’m more confident singing than acting. S Me too, because we started in the industry from a singing background. However, we want to challenge ourselves by taking part in more acting and movies. What do you think you would be doing if you weren’t in the entertainment business? S I’d probably be a personal trainer. I like to go to the gym and I studied sport science. F I’d be interested in studying in Europe or America, probably business or psychology. If you were to give a young person one piece of advice, what would it be? S No matter what industry you would like to start in, you have got to have the right attitude and positive thinking. I’m a believer in the law of attraction. F I would advise you to gather your courage and step out of your comfort zone. You’ll have no motivation if you keep staying in your comfort zone, but once you’ve stepped out, you’ll learn and see a lot of new things.

Christmas crackers Five seasonal movies to get you into the festive spirit... Playing on board this month is a selection of stories that encapsulate the highs and lows of ‘the most wonderful time of the year’. Take your pick from two comedies about being stranded at Christmas, another about the chaos of Christmas shopping, an animated adventure aboard a magical train and a romantic reflection on seeing in the new year. Set in small town Arizona, A Country Christmas combines sunny weather with seasonal cheer when two children find Santa stranded in their barn and must help him regain his magical powers. Also in the wrong place at the right time is eight-year-old Kevin McAllister, accidentally left behind by his family to survive Christmas in 1990’s classic comedy Home Alone. The laughs keep coming as Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as a beleaguered dad in Home Alone Jingle All The Way, with an evasive Turbo Man toy leading him in a mad dash across the city. Another Hollywood A-lister, Tom Hanks, narrates and stars in animated movie The Polar Express, playing several characters in this tale of a train heading to Santa’s home. Finally, ensemble piece New Year’s Eve revolves around how several very different New Yorkers see off the last day of 2012 through eight funny, romantic stories.

Perfect accompaniment When Om Puri met Dame Helen Mirren on the set of The Hundred-Foot Journey, he fell to his knees and said, ‘Your highness, I am your slave.’ It’s the reaction Mirren’s character, Michelin-starred French restaurateur Madame Mallory, might have expected from Puri’s character, Papa, who dares to open an Indian restaurant across the street. However, the real Mirren pulled Puri to his feet and said, ‘How wonderful we’re going to be working together.’ Mirren taught Puri dance moves for the film, with the Bollywood star in return cooking her Indian meals after the shoot. ‘Om’s the perfect leading man,’ she says.

The write stuff Irish pop band The Script return with their fourth album, No Sound Without Silence. Here’s our fact file on the trio: • F ounding members Danny O’Donoghue and Mark Sheehan previously worked as songwriters and producers for Britney Spears and others. •O ’Donoghue also worked as a coach on the UK version of TV show The Voice before leaving to concentrate on The Script. Their 2012 single Hall Of Fame features fellow The Voice judge will.i.am and is their biggest hit to date. • Recording for No Sound Without Silence began on tour. ‘We’d come off stage and start recording straight away in a studio bus,’ says O’Donoghue. ‘When we hit the studio we wanted it to have that same impact.’ • The album’s title stems from a period of reflection and is also a comment on the music industry. ‘You can’t have anything good to say if you don’t think about it first,’ explains O’Donoghue. POSTCARD

Shanghai’s

ARK OF ART

99 ‘animals’ board fishing boat in Shanghai Text Simon Tutton

As part of an ambitious exhibition presented by Shanghai’s Power Station of Art (a renovated electricity plant that’s now a leading contemporary art museum), New York-based Chinese-born artist Cai Guo-Qiang set sail on The Ninth Wave, an old fishing boat carrying 99 fabricated animals along the iconic Bund on the Huangpu River. On the worn, weatherbeaten boat from the artist’s hometown of Quanzhou, replicas of tigers, polar bears, elephants and apes lay fatigued and sullenlooking, as if barely surviving the journey. Named after and inspired by Russian artist Ivan Aivazovsky’s 1850 painting, which depicts weary shipwreck survivors helpless against nature’s unforgiving forces, The Ninth Wave expresses Earth’s environmental woes and their effect on animals. On his choice to use 99 animals, the artist explained, “Ninety-nine is a number I personally fancy. In China, it symbolises infiniteness. I use that number a lot, not a hundred; a hundred is just a hundred.” 
