This year, I’m contemplating challenging myself to a full marathon. It will likely be my one and only attempt, so it must be held at a phenomenal location – in my opinion, one that will give me an added excuse for a vacation. I am sure I will be more motivated this way. I researched and some of the best marathons worth travelling for are in Rome, London, Berlin, New York, Napa Valley, Vancouver and the French Riviera. Closer to home, though, the Great Ocean Road run is Australia’s most scenic. It offers seven distances, from the 1.5-kilometre Kid’s Gallop to the 60-kilometre Ultra Marathon, and takes runners (and walkers, too) past stunning views of the coast from Lorne to Apollo Bay. The marathon has become so popular that organisers have turned it into a running festival with activities for the whole family, including kite flying, yoga, free movie screenings, live music and others. I picked up running rather late in life, and only after I underwent a major health crisis. When I recovered, I tried my best to live a healthier life consisting of exercise, eating in moderation and most importantly, having a different perspective on life. Like it or not, your priorities will change when you are given a second chance in life. I’ve been running now for 10 years. I started slow, first running for 20 minutes each time, then 30. Then I increased the pace and challenged myself to run for 45 minutes. I was stuck here for quite a while but now I run 10 kilometres in 65 minutes. A few years ago, I started running in marathons. I don’t do the full 42 kilometre run. My longest run was for a half marathon. I finished in two hours and 22 minutes.
Ethnic Chinese communities around the world will celebrate the Lunar New Year on 16 February. This year, we decided to break a little from tradition. Instead of featuring must-have new year dishes, we decided to find out how popular Malaysian actress Joey Leong celebrates the Lunar New Year. Then in our Bahasa Malaysia section, we look at the single ladies’ age-old tradition of throwing mandarin oranges into the sea, or in Kuala Lumpur’s case, into the Taman Jaya lake, in the hope of finding their true love in the new year. In recent years, single men have reciprocated by throwing bananas. I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing them all the best. I hope you find these stories a joy to read. War Hero Jailed and tortured by occupying Japanese forces, the story of Sybil Kathigasu is one of courage and conviction under extreme circumstances.
towns that dot the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. But during the Japanese occupation in the Second World War, it was a key nerve point for the underground resistance. Sybil Kathigasu, wife, mother, nurse and, later, war hero, moved to Papan just days before Japanese troops marched into Perak’s capital of Ipoh, where she and her husband, Abdon Clement Kathigasu, a doctor, had been operating a clinic. The couple helped guerrillas hiding in the Malayan jungles just beyond Papan with food, medicine and information, and treated their injuries. The couple kept a shortwave radio concealed, tuning in to forbidden broadcasts. As food became scarce and inflation soared, Sybil worked to keep her family and friends fed through a combination of relentless effort and resourcefulness. Heeding the call for food security by the Japanese occupiers, she planted vegetables and added a bamboo fence, ostensibly to protect the vegetable plot. The house the couple lived in became a calling point for injured Malayan People's AntiJapanese Army guerrillas who were treated in secret. The house itself was adapted ingeniously; the tall bamboo fence helped people approach the house unseen from the main street, and a small room at the back was fashioned into an operating theatre. The couple's efforts put them at risk. The Japanese ruled in a climate of fear and sought information through a network of informants. Stories about their brutality were also spreading fast. In 1943, Sybil and her husband were betrayed to the Kempeitai, the military police of the

In her unfinished autobiography, No Dram of Mercy, written after the end of the war, Sybil talks about her torture. “They seemed desirous of battering the truth out of my body. Each unsatisfactory answer I gave – and they were all unsatisfactory – was followed by a dose of intense physical pain, administered in varying quantities and many different forms,” she writes. “They would run needles into my fingertips below the nail, while my hands were held firmly, flat on the table; they heated iron bars on a charcoal brazier and applied them to my legs and back; they ran a stick between the second and third fingers of both my hands, squeezing my fingers together and holding them firmly in the air while two men hung from the ends of the cane, making a see-saw of my hands and tearing the flesh between my fingers," she continues.

The Japanese found Sybil guilty of treason and sentenced her to life imprisonment, but by then the war was already nearing its end. In poor health, Sybil was freed in August 1945 and was later brought to Britain for treatment. While there, she underwent numerous treatments but she never fully recovered. She succumbed to complications from the injuries she sustained on 12 June 1948. Sybil, born Sybil Daly on 3 September 1899 to an Irish-European planter and a FrenchEurasian midwife in Medan on the island of Sumatra in today's Indonesia, was awarded the George Medal, the highest British honour for bravery, in 1947. During my flight to Kota Kinabalu, I read the September edition of Going Places and came across the article ‘War Hero’. It would be great if this column can be maintained in every edition of the magazine since Malaysia Airlines is our national carrier. Just done watching the movie Ola Bola, and I am reading Going Places while the crew is serving pies. I am distracted by their banter, one joking that we’ll all soon become Popeyes for eating the spinach pie, while another is asking his teammate for help to explain the snack in Chinese to a fellow passenger. They are patient yet cheerful, at this hour of almost midnight. I am delighted to witness this scene. What a beautiful Malaysia the team has portrayed. They live up to the true Malaysian spirit, delivering unwavering service to passengers, like how our Malaysian sportsmen showed their spirit at the battlefield in Ola Bola. Seating in the middle seat isn’t always my first choice but today I took home something beautiful with me. Thank you. You remind me of how proud I am being a Malaysian. Three years ago, in the holy month of Ramadan, I was on a flight back to Malaysia after an exciting three-week student exchange programme in Taipei, Taiwan. The flight took off smoothly and soon food and drinks were distributed to the passengers. One of the cabin crew members approached me, asking if I wanted my lunch. I politely declined because I was fasting that day. When the flight landed at KLIA, I was eager to meet my family members who were waiting for me at the arrival hall. As I was gathering my personal belongings after the seat belt sign was switched off, the same cabin crew approached me to hand me a transparent plastic bag with a Malaysia Airlines logo on it. All he said was “Excuse me, sir. I just wanted you to take this with you because it is yours. Happy Iftar with your loved ones in Malaysia”. Cultural Fest This month sees Lunar New Year celebrated with much pomp and circumstance in countries with significant Chinese populations. Also known as the Spring Festival in China, businesses are often closed for a week as people head back to their hometowns to visit relatives and pay respect to the elders. Traditionally, family members gather for a feast known as the reunion dinner on the eve of the festival. The giving of money in red packets is a common practice, as are cultural performances and parades in public spaces, accompanied by firecrackers and lion or dragon dance displays. Some visit temples to pray for blessings for the new year, and to give offerings to gods and ancestors. Certain traditions such as the eating of special festive food vary from place to place, which makes it all the more interesting to experience when you visit any of these countries during the festival. Classic Comedy Watch a hilarious take on Shakespeare’s most comical romance, As You Like It, as performed by the world’s first cycling theatre company, The Handlebards. Described by award-winning actor Sir Ian McKellen as “uproariously funny”, the company has performed in over 100 different venues and is commended for its highly visual and accessible style of Shakespeare. The show in Malaysia features an all-female cast and tells the story of Rosalind, a banished duke’s daughter who falls in love with Orlando at a wrestling match. Banished from court by her jealous uncle, she disguises herself as a boy to look for her father in the Forest of Arden, but meets Orlando again and counsels him in the art of love and wooing.
Held since 1950, the Sapporo Snow Festival is Japan’s largest winter festival, drawing two million people to the city each year. The 1.5-kilometre-long Odori Park in downtown Sapporo is transformed into a fantasy world of snow and ice sculptures, lit by colourful lights come nightfall. Fun for the family awaits at Tsudome, the festival’s second-largest site, where one will find towering snow slides and snow-rafting areas suitable for all ages. Last but not least, the Susukino venue features an ice sculpture contest and an Ice Bar, where visitors can sip on hot drinks while surrounded by snow.

The India Art Fair celebrates its tenth birthday this month with another instalment at the NSIC grounds, Okhla Industrial Area in New Delhi. In a bid to promote cultural discourse between South Asian countries and the rest of the world, the fair continues to host a rich programme of panel discussions, artist talks and lectures. It’s your last chance to catch Jon Campbell’s exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney this month. The show comprises a large selection of Campbell’s slogan installations: his colourful pieces depict popular Australian phrases and sayings displayed in playful ways in bright colour palettes. Alongside a vast repertoire of previous works, the Museum has commissioned Campbell to create an enormous wall painting across the four walls of the North Gallery. This awe-inspiring mural and his other thoughtprovoking pieces will be on display this month.

King Charles I reigned across England, Scotland and Ireland from 1625 until 1649 and during this time he amassed one of the most astounding art collections of his time, consisting of contemporary masters, such as Rubens. After King Charles I was executed, his private art collection was sold off and found new homes across Europe. For ‘Charles I: King and Collector’ the Royal Academy reunites some 100 pieces from the King’s selection, ranging from sculptures to paintings, tapestries and miniatures. It’s a unique chance to have an insight into the arts scene of the time and the King’s personal taste.
For the first time in history, Banksy’s street art has been given welldeserved museum space at the Modern Contemporary Museum in Amsterdam. Open until May 2018, ‘Laugh Now’ features over 50 original works, celebrating Banksy’s role as an activist artist. The selection comprises rescued outdoor art from buildings and structures that were in the process of being demolished and indoor art loaned by myriad collectors. Together, it explores Banksy’s knack for tongue-in-cheek, thought-provoking social commentary.

The year was 1894. In Kuala Lumpur, an unnamed correspondent told the Selangor Journal that a Professor Lawrence had come to town. Professor Lawrence declared himself to be a “Practical Aeronaut and Aerial Engineer” and it had been advertised that he would make a hot-air balloon ascent from the grounds of the Chinese Club and then descend back down to earth with a brand new invention called a parachute. Although our unnamed correspondent (almost certainly British) did not seem impressed by the showmanship of this travelling artiste, he admits that we should be grateful that anybody might be “good enough to look in at such an out-of-the-way one-horse place as Kuala Lumpur” so we “ought to be grateful for very small potatoes, and avoid hypercriticism.” A large crowd assembled but they were to be disappointed because the Professor cancelled the show having not received enough money to justify the risk of such a dangerous undertaking. As the majority of the “lightly clad audience” were leaving, a “public spirited Chinaman” agreed to cover the cost. The next day Professor Lawrence tried again, filled his balloon with the hot air from a pit filled with burning charcoal, told the patient crowd that he would make the ascent even though he still had not received enough money and requested that “something handsome” might be donated. He took a bottle of beer from a wellwisher in the crowd, bade farewell to his wife and then he took off. “Amid enthusiastic handclapping and cheering the balloon slowly soared aloft to a height of – 20 feet.” It seems that even in the tropics, the temperature could be too cold for a hot-air balloon, so it promptly returned to earth and the crowd and our correspondent went home disappointed. But the next day, our correspondent was having tea on his verandah

When Professor Lawrence was perched under his balloon at a height of perhaps 2,000 feet, steeling himself for his parachute descent, he would have been the first man ever to have had a bird’s-eye view of Kuala Lumpur from a perspective that we now take for granted. He would have looked down on a city that had no idea it would one day become the capital city of a land that would one day be called Malaysia. From up there, the town must have looked very small, seemingly on the verge of being engulfed by a jungle only occasionally broken by scars of red earth that indicated tin mines, and all overhung by rain-filled clouds. For centuries, the only way to travel around Peninsula or Borneo Malaysia would have been by boat along the rivers and the coast. Cutting across the land through jungles and over mountains was done but it was extremely difficult and not much could be carried. Roads and railways in the early 20th century made these journeys possible but even in 1949, a young schoolboy attending Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) described how it took three days to travel from Kuala Terengganu to his school in Perak on the opposite side of the peninsula. His bus stopped overnight at Kuantan and Kuala Lumpur before he took the train to Kuala Kangsar. A family friend who took the same journey in 1949 said he was astonished that Kuala Lumpur had so many cars.
In 1949, the communist insurgency called The Malayan Emergency had begun (it came to an absolute end in the 1980s). This made it dangerous to travel by road and an MCKK schoolboy wrote about how he flew to school from Kota Bharu in a Malayan Airways 21-seater Dakota, the workhorse of the Second World War. “It was very warm inside,” Abdul Rahim bin Yusoff wrote but the “soft, soothing voice of the girl-attendant told us that we would feel just the opposite when up in the air.” When the plane reached 8,000 feet, he was shivering. The plane dodged the rainclouds so that only “occasionally I could see rivers wriggling as though they were beaten snakes.” The flight from Kota Bharu to Penang took only an hour but during that short flight he had travelled from one epoch to another. As a younger MCKK schoolboy called Alwee wrote about the same flight: “The plane now circled the aerodrome. Then a bumpety bump, a smooth run, and the giant bird came to a standstill. I was on earth once more, but I felt as though I was on another, unknown planet.”. ■

The Singapore story began with its harbour at the base of the Singapore river — and this is still the place to head to view colonial heritage, as well as the newer, stunning downtown centre. Dominating all is the Moshe Safdiedesigned three-tower Marina Bay Sands hotel and shopping centre, complete with a top-floor viewing deck in the form of a curving ocean liner. Opposite Marina Bay is the Padang, surrounded by the National Gallery housed in a stunning Supreme Court/ City Hall conversion and other colonial buildings such as the Old Parliament now housing The Arts House and the Asian Civilisations Museum, an award-winning showcase of Asian culture and history. Adjacent to Marina Bay is the futuristic, lotus-shaped ArtScience Museum where exhibitions are often interactive and cutting-edge.
green areas and roadside plantings are among the city-state’s major attractions. Don’t miss Gardens by the Bay, with its two glass-domed hothouses, a grove of fantastical ‘supertrees’ and expansive themed gardens, or the National Orchid Garden at the older Botanic Gardens. This houses over 60,000 plants and a cool house that showcases pitcher plants and orchids, among other species. The Singapore Zoo is as much a garden as an animal sanctuary, while the Night Safari allows visitors to view animals in naturalistic, ‘open’ exhibits in the evenings.

The river is another winner, with three quays – Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and Robertson Quay – offering tourists and residents alike a smorgasbord of dining, drinking and clubbing options. Old godowns and merchants’ houses have found new life along the buzzy riverfront, while river taxis have replaced the bumboats of old.
Tiong Bahru is one of Singapore’s more atmospheric neighbourhoods and a firm favourite with those who prefer the individual to the mass. Originally the site for the Singapore Improvement Trust’s experiment in improved housing, the area’s art deco flats and shophouses are now both residential and retail. Heritage meets happening here: at Tiong Bahru’s centre is the sprawling Wet Market and Food Centre, while the periphery contains upmarket coffee shops such as Tiong Bahru Bakery as well as some interesting galleries, and the not-to-be-missed Qi Tian Gong temple, dedicated to the monkey god.
GARDEN CITY Close to the downtown core is Fort Canning, a great spot to watch al fresco films, plays and dance performances at certain times of the year (the National Parks Board website gives event listings). In fact, Singapore’s parks, nature reserves,

FINE FOOD No visit to Singapore is complete without at least three meals a day. Every type of cuisine is available, from inexpensive hawker fare to fine-dining options. For authentic Singaporean fare, Candlenut at COMO Dempsey is a Peranakan gem, serving up a contemporary take on traditional Straits Chinese dishes, while homegrown PS.Café has a number of outlets – a gorgeous one overlooking Marina Bay at One Fullerton, a greenhouse option at Raffles City, and perennial favourite Chopsuey Café in the colonial-chic Dempsey Hills enclave. This is where all the major brands are to be found in upmarket air-conditioned malls such as ION, Ngee Ann City and Paragon. But if something a bit more intimate is more to your liking, independent boutiques along Haji Lane in the Kampong Glam or the Arab Quarter may appeal. Other independent shops that stock Singapore-centric souvenirs are Naiise, with its quirky homewares, stationery items and designer-chic ethos, and Supermama, a cute gallery that has teamed up with a Japanese ceramics company to produce eyecatching tableware. Higher priced, but still design savvy, is Christina Ong’s new Dover Street Market, the local outpost of the London outlet in Haymarket. Even if you can’t afford to buy anything here, it’s worth a peek for the audacity of the design alone!
CLOSE BY If time permits, a day-trip out can be worth the effort. Some head to Johor Bahru across the border in Malaysia for cheap shopping, but there are two nearer to home. The islands of Sentosa and Pulau Ubin are as different from each other as chalk and cheese. Sentosa is brash and brassy, chock-a-block with Universal Studios, a fantastic underwater aquarium, zip-line, beaches, bars, restaurants and other outdoor activities. Pulau Ubin, on the other hand, is light years away from urban Singapore, even though it is only a 10-minute boat ride from Changi Point. Visitors are encouraged to come for the day and hire a bike. Many head to Chek Jawa, a conserved wetland area on the east coast of the island, while others are content to walk or cycle in the idyllic interior. Expect to come across wild hog or mousedeer, and plenty of local and migratory birds. Sights of old kampung (village) houses, quarriesturned-lakes, abandoned farms and plantations evoke an earlier era that is utterly charming. ■

You’ve often been called the greatest explorer of all time. What do you think of that?

To me, Sir Ernest Shackleton, Captain Robert Falcon Scott and Roald Amundsen are the greatest explorers of all time! Those are the explorers that I’ve always admired and who have inspired me to pursue a career in exploration.
What was the most challenging or dangerous situation you’ve had to face?
Tell us about your first ever major solo expedition.
In April 1997, I undertook a six-month solo traverse of the South American continent. I left on foot from the Pacific Ocean and climbed to the source of the Amazon River high in the Peruvian Andes. From there, I descended the

There have been many throughout my adventures, but to state a few: getting bitten by a snake and going completely blind for an entire week in the Amazon jungle; having my tent burn down in flames during my circumnavigation of the Arctic Circle; and falling down a crevasse during my latest expedition across Antarctica. What is your goal whenever you set off for an expedition?
To share my adventures, inspire, learn from the world, and raise awareness. What would you say is your greatest adventure of all time?
Most probably my recent solo traverse of Antarctica in 57 days. This was a childhood dream that finally came true, once I felt that I had acquired enough experience and knowledge from my previous expeditions. Nobody has attempted to cross the continent solo and unsupported. Antarctica only has two months of summer, where the temperature is -30 degrees Celsius. In winter, it’s -90 degrees Celsius. It is impossible for human beings to stay alive. My expedition was two months late because the ice held up the boat, but there was a small window of opportunity to make it across and
I decided to go. I had a sled with enough food and fuel to keep me alive for 90 days. Temperatures on the plateau were about -40 degrees Celsius. I lived in a tent and ate 12,000 calories a day just to have enough energy. The wind was constantly blowing around 50 kilometres an hour so pitching the tent was difficult and I couldn’t take my clothes off, even inside. My feet froze so I had to let blood out every day to release the pressure. If you want to do something that has never been done before, you must be willing to go that extra mile. Twenty-eight days later, I reached the South Pole. I stayed only for a few hours because winter was approaching and I had to walk for my life. My body temperature went down to 35 degrees and I was suffering from hypothermia. I broke my ankle when one of my skis got caught in a snow drift. Things weren’t looking too good, but that’s life – you can’t stop. After 57 days, I reached the other side and I saw the ocean in front of me. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

Why do you do what you do?
That’s a question I often ask myself. As a professional explorer, I’ve climbed five 8,000-metre peaks. Every year, nearly half the people who attempt to climb them die, so why do people do it? Birds fly because they can and fish swim because they are made to swim. I explore because that’s what makes me happy, and that’s what I want to do in life. Adventure is something that puts a smile on my face. Although it’s risky, I’m not afraid of dying. I’m afraid of not living. What’s the best thing about your ‘job’?
Travelling to remote places and witnessing the untouched beauty of this planet! I drove across the Himalayas on an expedition with my two daughters, and we passed some of the highest roads in the world. I was half a kilometre behind and when I saw how excited they were, I stopped next to them, got out of the car and opened the doors – and about 20 people piled into it, one sitting on top of the other, some trying to steer the wheel. Sharing that passion for adventure, knowing that this will be something that they will speak about for the rest of their lives, is the way to make people happy.

Some advice for those who want to follow in your footsteps.
Motivation is not enough to succeed. You need to believe in yourself and always be disciplined. We all have a hunger for adventure. We can be adventurous in anything – mountaineering, music, art, science – but what’s important is to step out of the comfort zone. If you’re afraid of losing, you can never win. It’s only when the will to win becomes bigger than the fear to
lose that you can go out there and achieve amazing things. Where to next?
India! I plan on climbing the highest virgin peak in the Himalayas, but instead of taking a plane, my daughters and I plan on driving from Malaysia all the way to India, passing through Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Bangladesh. ■

The Great Ocean Road Running Festival has been held annually since 2005, with the longest distance category, the 60-kilometre Ultra Marathon, going along the coastline from the idyllic town of Lorne and ending in Apollo Bay, where the shorter runs take place and where all runs end.
Landing at the nearest airport, the Melbourne Airport, it is a 75-minute drive to Torquay, the starting point of the Great Ocean Road. If arriving on a late flight, it is advisable to settle in at Torquay for the night, before tackling another one-hour-plus drive to Lorne or Apollo Bay, two sites on the Great Ocean Road marathon circuit.
Peppers The Sands Resort in Torquay is available for transiting visitors, and even warrants an extra night’s stay or two if you have the time, as both the golfing resort with its 18-hole championship course and the town of Torquay are a pleasure to explore at leisure. While modern and even a bit upscale, Torquay exudes a laid-back vibe more commonly experienced at sleepy fishing villages.

The length of the Great Ocean Road, however, is much longer, stretching from the town of Torquay, a.k.a. Surfing HQ, going past Anglesea, and through the Great Otway National Park, all
the way to Allansford town in the west. Built by returning servicemen after World War I and dedicated to their fallen comrades, the road is essentially the world’s largest War Memorial.

This could be due to its proximity to the sea and because Torquay is one of the surfing capitals of the world. Leading surf brands Quiksilver and Rip Curl both originated here, with the latter having its global headquarters in this very town. This is also where the Australian National Surfing Museum is located, where visitors can learn about the sport, gaining more appreciation for it even if you have never surfed a wave. A tour of the museum would also give insight into the beaches to be seen later, coasting on the Great Ocean Road. From Torquay, Anglesea is a short drive away, where McGains Nursery and Organic Foodstore is definitely worth a visit for the delicious vegetarian meals served in its rustic café. Its interior is expertly decorated with mismatched tables and chairs that add to the charm of the establishment run by a husband-and-wife pair.

Back on the highway, the coastline is in view again as driving resumes toward Apollo Bay. Magnificent vistas of the ocean accompany the drive, even from Torquay, going past Bells Beach – the setting for the final scene in the 1991 movie Point Break starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze – and the Split Point Lighthouse. Look out for the Great Ocean Road Memorial Arch, and be prepared to slow down to look for a safe spot to park if you’d like to take a photo. Elsewhere on the road, there are several lookout points perfect for taking in the breathtaking scenery or for snapping a photo or two.
Arriving in Lorne, accommodation should not be a problem with many quaint bed-and-breakfast lodges alongside grand hotels as well as newer resorts and motels. Many offer family rooms and apartments for larger holiday groups. The Great Ocean Road Running Festival attracts runners and non-runners alike for its free activities throughout the weekend, with live music shows by Australian artists, free movie screenings at the Lorne Theatre, magic shows and mini golf for the kids, yoga classes, and a kite festival.
In Apollo Bay, the festival atmosphere continues with food trucks and merchandise stalls set up on lawns next to the beautiful beach, yoga sessions accompanied by acoustic guitar strums on the beach foreshore, and the bustling environment on the main street, with its sidewalk cafés, seafood restaurants and souvenir shops. The Apollo Bay Hotel is very popular for its sidewalk café and live band performances, while the Best Western Apollo Bay is great for families as it offers one- or two-room apartment options with a kitchenette for self-catering.

As Apollo Bay is the main location for all the running events, being the finishing point for the Ultra Marathon, the 44-kilometre Marathon and the 23-kilometre Half-Marathon, as well as the start and finish line for the 14-kilometre Paradise Run, the 6-kilometre Mizuno Run and the 1.5-kilometre Kids Gallop, the energy here is highly charged, especially on the second and final day of the festival. The excitement is lifted by the runners’ enthusiasm, and fuelled by cheers from the supporters. The Pub To Pub Waiters’ Challenge, with waiters from various food and beverage outlets running in their aprons, balancing bottles on their trays racing each other, adds to the entertaining spectacle. The Great Ocean Road marathon is picturesque as runners take in the calming greens and blues of the ocean and the sky. The winding terrains ensure a change of landscape every now and then, so the view isn’t monotonous. However, the event is also said to be one of the toughest in the world, with the mainly uphill orientation of the route.

Malaysian actress Joey Leong ushers in the Lunar New Year with family and seasonal favourites.
Yee sang, bak kwa and family bonding are some of film star Joey Leong’s favourite things when celebrating the Lunar New Year. “Yee sang is the most important. We must have it at least once a year. Sometimes, we have it seven or eight times a year when we have dinners with different people. We eat it only during Chinese New Year,” says Leong. Yee sang or Cantonese-style raw fish salad was also the one item that cheered her up when her friend brought a pack while visiting her in London in 2016. “She wasn’t studying with me at the same university but she came over to London just to meet me for Chinese New Year. She brought me yee sang. I was so touched,” says Leong, who also loves the sweet Chinese pork jerky known locally as bak kwa but restricts herself because it is said to cause heatiness or heat stress to the body. Having been in the entertainment industry since she was five, Leong, now 24 years old, has starred in over 40 movies, dramas and advertisements. She has also earned a Best Actress nomination at the 2009 Asian Festival of First Films through her chilling portrayal of a demon-possessed girl in the movie Blood Ties. Her other Asian blockbuster movies include Twisted Love (2012), The Second Coming (2013) and Our Sister Mambo (2015). Being a celebrity has not changed the way she celebrates the Lunar New Year. “I started as a child actor when I was five. So, it is the same every year,” laughs Leong, who comes from a close-knit family. Same means shopping for gifts of food for relatives about two weeks prior to the new year. She often joins her parents when they are shopping but will miss out this year as she is in the middle of filming a 25-episode television drama.

“On Chinese New Year’s eve, we will have a reunion dinner with my father’s side of the family. We usually go to a restaurant. After dinner, we sometimes visit our relatives but sometimes, we just go home because we need to pray. We must welcome the God of Prosperity into our house! That’s what my parents do,” explains Leong, who also observes superstitions such as no washing of hair on the first day of the Lunar New Year for fear of washing away good fortune. She also generally wears brightly coloured clothes. The first day of the new year is spent at her father’s twin brother’s home where the extended family will gather. Leong and her younger brother start the new year by extending good wishes to their parents, after which they will receive angpows (red packets filled with money for good luck and traditionally given out during Lunar New Year, at weddings or birthdays). The family also heads to the temple for prayers and observes a vegetarian diet on the first day of the lunar year.

The Leongs will host the unique Malaysian tradition of open house on the second day of the new year, when relatives and friends visit to exchange greetings over a meal or a game of cards. “My dad cooks better than my mum but he rarely spends time in the kitchen so we seldom have the chance to eat what he cooks. But on the second day of Chinese New Year, they will both show their magic in the kitchen. That is the day when our house is really buzzing, from morning until night,” laughs Leong. The recipient of a scholarship to study at Coventry University London where she graduated in 2016 with First Class Honours in Global Business, Leong says celebrating the new year away from the family really stood out for her. “I appreciate it a lot more when I spend it with my family, not just the four of us, but with

the extended family. I am always very happy when I am with them and we laugh a lot when we are all together. That’s why when I was in London, I felt a little empty because I was not with them,” she says. Leong got a bit emotional when recalling a funny incident at her late aunt’s house last year during Lunar New Year, which involved her aunt giving her dog, Vera, an 18-month-old Pomeranian, an angpow. Vera finally picked up the angpow after being enticed with treats, much to the amusement of everyone. “My aunt (her mother’s sister) was the one who laughed the loudest. It was a simple moment but memorable. My aunt was the closest to our family. My mum is the most important woman in my life. My aunt is second. She was a cheerful person and brought a lot of happiness to all of us,” says Leong. Having wrapped up a television drama due to be released this month, Leong is now deep in portraying her most challenging role to-date – that of a woman distraught by the death of her boyfriend in a car accident. “I am actually looking

I have always wanted to act as a physically challenged person and for over 400 scenes in the show, I sit in a wheelchair or walk with crutches. There are many scenes where she (the character) has to release her emotions as well. “The character also has some mental problems because her boyfriend died in the car accident. She was in the car with him and it happened on her birthday,” explains Leong, adding that the character became very obsessed in solving the mystery surrounding the accident. The drama titled Turning Point 2 will wrap up by the end
of March, after which Leong will have a break before tackling her next project. “I normally would take a short break after a drama as I need to get out of the character. Before I get into the next role, I need to refresh myself. I would normally take a break for weeks but sometimes, up to three to four months before I get into my next character. During that time, I would do other things,” says Leong, who is also an accomplished singer with hopes of launching an album. “I want to give more meaning to the songs and the album. So, it needs time and the right person to produce.” ■

Ladies, it's time to share the vanity mirror. Worldwide, the men's grooming market is on the up as men are getting busy with primping, trimming and styling. As men are putting in the effort to look good, a few enterprising Malaysians are offering grooming products that will help them get the job done. Whether they are about shavers, solid cologne or pomade, these entrepreneurs understand one thing about how men groom: "Men want things to be simple. They are looking for things that meet their lifestyle, that are simple to use and versatile," says Kevin Tan.
Mentega & The Oven Cuttery Kevin 'Cottie' Tan of Mentega Pomade is a habitual pomade user. He was going through a jar of pomade in less than one month for his personal styling and for his stage performances as a bassist, a habit that a junior reporter could ill afford. With how-to advice from Internet sources, he started making pomade for his own consumption. A year later, upon the advice of friends, he put his pomades up for sale. As pompadours and undercuts are having a style revival, pomades have become sought-after items, crucial to keeping the shape and shine. Made from shea butter or cocoa butter, Mentega's pomades come in larger-sized jars and are suitable for Malaysia’s tropical climate. "It's less uncomfortably greasy and it's a little easier to wash," says Tan. Plans are underway to introduce water-based pomades. In 2015, he quit journalism and took up barbering lessons. "I was always interviewing my peers who had their own enterprises, and was inspired to do something of my own," he says. Together with his girlfriend, Cheryl Wong, they created the Mentega brand, which also sells beard oil and moustache wax, and The Oven Cuttery barber shop. The Oven Cuttery currently occupies a corner to the back of a café called Hommage. Service is by appointment only, and this is where Mentega pomade is still handmade and hand-poured. Each haircut ends with an oldfashioned hot-towel and massage, because, says Tan, "I wanted clients to have a rest from

A former Groupon employee, Cheong was looking for a business opportunity of his own when he chanced upon an article touting solid cologne as a must-have men's grooming item. "I did my research and discovered that there wasn't such a thing available here yet. It seemed like a golden opportunity to introduce it to the market," he says. With the help of Internet tutorials, Cheong cooks up the cologne himself. Made from essential oils, beeswax and shea butter or natural oils, the texture, consistency and spreadability of the cologne are suited to this hot and wet climate. The R&D process took him up to six months as he mixed and matched to arrive at the perfect formula.

"Men's grooming here is still in its infancy, so it is as much about building the brand as it is about educating the public about grooming. It is to help men understand that grooming can be easy to do and you don't have to splurge on an expensive bottle of cologne," says Cheong. The Apothecary Malaysia is currently available online and through select retail stores in Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, South Korea and New York.

It was the rising cost of razor blades that motivated Hafiz to start his own shaver brand. A regular shaver since his teens, he's noticed a steep price increase in buying replacement razors in recent years. His solution? Instead of just whinging about the price increase, Ahmad Hafiz Osman and his wife, Mona Marcella Johanabas, took matters into their hands and started producing shavers. "We knew nothing of the industry except buying shavers off the shelves," muses Hafiz. "My wife and I come from the branding and communications background; therefore, manufacturing was alien to us. The challenge was to find designers and manufacturers and most importantly razor blade manufacturers." They started from scratch. Armed with Google, it took them months of research to find a 100-year-old razor factory in Germany from which they procure their razors, and a reliable local manufacturer, who believed in their project, for the handles.

The resulting Scott's Shavers are solidly made shavers in different finishings – copper, brass, matte silver and matte black. Each set comes with a zinc core handle, an attached razor cartridge and two extra replacement razor cartridges. Customers can also personalise the shavers by requesting engravings on the handle. The shavers are available online through the website with free delivery nationwide, and eventually at select barbershops and high-end supermarkets in Malaysia. In the pipeline is a complete set of men's grooming products, including shaving cream, aftershave, shaver holder, travel kit and travel bag, slated to be introduced in the second half of 2018. Says Hafiz, "The new range is to ensure we keep moving forward and making our brand better for our customers, as well as making Malaysia proud to have a local razor brand." â–

Green activist and landscape architect Carolyn Joan Lau describes her studio as being “one step away from a rubbish tip!” But that depends on how you see it. Put any sort of trash into her creative hands, and it becomes treasure. A plastic jerry can is transformed into a quirky rhino lampshade, drink packets become a stylish purse, and cereal boxes morph into headturning necklaces. Lau is one of many Malaysians working to make something out of trash. They aim to divert the trash from the landfills, and as importantly, they hope to inspire people to think about trash, whether to reduce or reuse it. It just takes imagination.

Lau, 53, and trash have had a working relationship dating back three decades. Then, she was a young designer creating theatre sets on a frugal budget. Discarded items became her go-to source of material. “I had always liked to make things with my hands, and I find it more inspiring to work with found material and to make art with a purpose,” she said. Thus, began her life-long love for trash. From household trash, she conjured up stylish lamps made with the tiny white straws from probiotic drink cartons, devised perfectly balancing hanging mobiles from school books, and made tubby coin boxes from food supplement bottles.

Over the years, Lau has become skilled in seeing beyond the immediate use of any item. In her eyes, acupuncture needles are flexible steel wires, ballpoint pens are useful plastic tubes, and cereal boxes good quality paper with designs. “Someone was paid to design all this packaging, and the material is often good quality,” she said. Her pieces, which are both works of art for their beauty and craft for their utility, are sometimes sold to raise funds and awareness for causes that appeal to her, such as stray animals. Some years ago, she carved rescued styrofoam trays into delicate Christmas ornaments shaped as cats and dogs to raise money for an animal shelter. “Once I find a purpose to work for, the brain gets moving,” she said.

Having done so many projects over three decades, Lau has now found a home for them under her newly launched ‘Sampah Menyampah’ campaign for trash reduction. Sampah means trash in Malay, while menyampah expresses a feeling of disgust. Through this campaign, which currently targets disposable drink straws, Lau has found a space to share her ideas and know-how through talks and workshops. She jokes that the Internet has shared much with her, and she’s now sharing that back with anyone interested to learn!

Soaps & Candles Chia Wen Shin, 26, used to see her mother storing cooking oil in containers after frying food. The oil would be used a couple more times but eventually, it had to be thrown away. But there was nowhere to throw it away safely. “Paper, aluminium, plastics … we can find recycle bins everywhere. But there is none for cooking oil,” she said. It prompted her to scour the internet for solutions. She found that as oils are the basic ingredient for soaps and candles, cooking oil can also be used to make them, and she began to experiment. That was for a university project three years ago but after graduating, she turned it into a social enterprise called Green Yards.

Since April 2016, she has collected 4,000 kilogrammes of cooking oil from Muslim-friendly restaurants, and turned her house into a soapmaking lab. Chia said before being made into soaps or candles, the oil is first sieved through a micron filter that traps everything, even something as fine as a strand of hair. Most of the soaps are sold as corporate gifts. Chia has since been joined by her childhood friend, Kenzie Chan, also 26, with whom she had roamed their neighbourhood as children. Now, they drive around together to pick up used cooking oil, and personally make every bar of soap and every candle. They also collect used household oil dropped off at environmental organisation EkoKnights’ premises in Kuala Lumpur, to be sent to a bio-diesel manufacturer. Chia said their main aim has always been to recycle used cooking oil safely. Looking at their delicate soaps, it’s hard to imagine that they had once been used to fry fish!

Biji-biji is a social enterprise that champions sustainable living, and that includes reusing waste creatively.

and not easy to stitch together. And since they only take discards, they get a random selection. It took a while to figure out how to stitch the belts together, but the team eventually found a way, turning them into sleek bags that are now their signature product. But not all materials are hard to work with. The team recently received 500 kilogrammes of kimonos from a manufacturer in Japan, rejected for being outdated or with defects. It was like receiving half a tonne of treasure. The intricately designed fabric was perfect as highlights for the seatbelt bags, while plainer pieces became the lining. The team also came up with a new range of super-stylish clothing artfully incorporating the kimono, a traditional Japanese garment. “Sustainability is the core element of our business,” said Norashahera. “We have a unit which scrutinises our designs closely while they are still on paper. It must have at least 60 percent sustainable material.” Thanks to the kimono, some of the bags have reached 90 percent upcycled material content.
Norashahera Haleem, 31, who heads the fashion arm of Biji-biji, said it all began when one of the four co-founders was asked to make 1,000 innovative and environmentally sustainable bags for an event. They came up with the idea of turning event banners into tote bags that could be unfurled to become vertical planters. It was an immediate hit, earning them funding to launch Biji-biji in 2013.

Upcycling can seem daunting but upcyclers say it is all about being willing to experiment. Working with trash is a challenge but is their inspiration and mission as well, and they hope to inspire more people to do the same. ■

Yap is the talent behind Pop Up Dining KL, a monthly gastronomic experience in which Yap and his team serve a set menu in a new location for one evening only. Yap's menu usually has a sharing theme, and while produce is always local, flavours tend to be a fusion of Malaysian and Italian. It's a unique format that has proved a hit with foodies across Kuala Lumpur as well as in Penang and Borneo. “Our first Pop Up Dining event was a dinner in a café in Bangsar for just eight people. That was two years ago. Since then we've run more than 30 events catering for up to 50 people,” says Yap, who admits that cooking in unusual locations can be tricky though it has made him a better chef. “The facilities available really shape the menu,” he explains. “Sometimes you have to come up with dishes that require very little on-site

cooking, which usually means a lot of prep work in advance. Regardless of where we're serving, everything still has to look and taste amazing. That's something I really enjoy figuring out.” It's surprising to find that this wandering chef's culinary background is in fact very firmly rooted in the traditional cuisine of his ancestors.
It was in Europe that Yap encountered the trend for pop-up dining events and supper clubs, a concept he decided to bring home when he returned to Malaysia in 2015. He also brought a desire to blend Italian flavours with the traditional Chinese cuisine he had grown up cooking.
“It was both of my grandmothers who first inspired my love of cooking,” he says. “My grandmother on my mum's side is Peranakan and she taught me Nyonya and Hokkien cooking. My grandmother on my dad's side was Hakka, and every Chinese New Year, I had to cook a big batch of braised pork belly with yams to distribute to our relatives and close friends while she sat by my side guiding me. She was the only one who knew the recipe and now I'm the only one who knows it. That feels very special.”
“Malaysians mostly think of Italian cuisine as pasta carbonara or pizza but there's a lot more to it than that and actually Italian cooking works really well with Malaysian produce and Chinese flavours.”
Studying Culinary Arts at KDU University College, Yap's horizons were first broadened by the college campus’ fine dining restaurant Dewakan, an acclaimed establishment pushing the boundaries of modern Malaysian and international cuisine.
Yap's signature dish, which makes frequent appearances at his dining events, is bagna càuda, a traditional dish from Piedmont in Italy, to which he has added a uniquely Malaysian twist. “Instead of typical Italian vegetables, I use Chinese cabbage, angled beans, garlic scapes, kale from Cameron Highlands and qing long

I add banana to the traditional sauce from Piedmont, which is made with garlic, salted anchovies and olive oil, to give it a sweetness.” Other fusion dishes that Yap has perfected include prawns tossed in Malaysian herbed Italian pesto with polenta chips and Italian bruschetta of confit local tomatoes, Malaysian sardines and Thai basil. “It can take a lot of trial and error to get the combination of flavours and ingredients to work but when you get it right, it makes the hard work worthwhile,” he says. Yap hopes to open his own restaurant towards the end of 2018 and his unique fusion of Italian and Malaysian flavours will take centre stage with an ethos of small groups sharing interesting flavour combinations in a relaxed setting.

His plans mean he may have to scale back his pop-up dining events. When asked if he'll get bored cooking in the same place night after night, he replies cheerfully, “No, I don't think so. This feels like the right time to take this step and it will be nice to finally have a place to call home. And a fully equipped kitchen to cook in, of course.” ■

Hari terakhir atau Hari Ke-15 Tahun Baru Cina merupakan acara kemuncak perayaan ini. Sebagai acara kedua terpenting bagi masyarakat Cina selepas malam berkumpul sebelum raya, Chap Goh Meh disambut secara unik dan berbeza-beza mengikut tempat dan negeri. Bagi sesetengah masyarakat Cina, tradisi zou bai bing akan diamalkan. Dalam bahasa Cina, istilah ini bermaksud bersiar-siar untuk menghilangkan penyakit. Tradisi ini menggalakkan pengamalnya agar keluar bersiar-siar pada hari bertuah tersebut bagi menyingkirkan penyakit. Di negara China, Taiwan dan Hong Kong pula, sambutan ini dimeriahkan dengan hidangan tang yuan, sejenis juadah bulat yang diperbuat daripada tepung beras. Juadah ini lazimnya dihidangkan sebagai simbolik penyatuan seluruh ahli keluarga. Untuk kanakkanak pula, permainan tanglung pada sebelah malam adalah satu kemestian. Kebanyakan aktiviti yang sudah tersebar luas di kalangan masyarakat Cina tempatan ini biasanya hanya dikhususkan untuk Perayaan Kuih Bulan. Di Malaysia pula, masyarakat Cina cukup sinonim dengan satu tradisi unik iaitu acara melontar buah oren ke laut. Tradisi lama ini biasanya diamalkan oleh golongan wanita bujang sebagai doa untuk mendapat pasangan hidup. Lazimnya, masyarakat Hokkien masih mengamalkan tradisi ini kerana Chap Goh Meh dalam dialek tersebut bererti Malam Ke-15 Tahun Baru Cina.
The fifteenth and final day of the Lunar New Year festival is the grand finale of the festivities. Regarded as second only to the reunion dinner in terms of importance to the Chinese, celebrations can vary widely from region to region. Some communities practise a custom called zou bai bing (literally, walk away the diseases in Mandarin) that advocates going out for a walk on the auspicious day to ward off diseases. In China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, celebrants eat tang yuan, round-shaped rice dumplings that symbolise family togetherness, while children carry lanterns at night – rituals reserved for the Mid-Autumn Festival among the Malaysian Chinese diaspora. One ritual that may be unique to Malaysia is the act of throwing mandarin oranges into the sea as a way for single ladies to find their soulmates. Predominantly carried out by the Hokkien community, the practice originated in olden times when single ladies were only allowed to venture out of their houses once a year on Chap Goh Meh (meaning 15th night in the dialect). Hoping to catch the attention of potential suitors, the girls would dress themselves in their finery and head to the seafront to cast the fruit under the watchful eye of their chaperoning aunts, of course.

Love & Festivities. The fifteenth day of the Lunar New Year, known as Chap Goh Meh in Malaysia, is celebrated with a unique ritual of tossing mandarin oranges into the sea.
Dubbed the Chinese answer to Valentine’s Day, Chap Goh Meh is celebrated throughout Malaysia where there is a sizeable Chinese population. For a number of years now, people in the Greater Kuala Lumpur area flock to the Taman Jaya public park to partake in a lakeside carnival. In southern Melaka state, past celebrations took place at the quayside; one year, festivities even included a grand boat procession through town. In terms of consistent scale and pomp, however, it’s hard to beat Malaysia’s northern Penang island, where Chap Goh Meh is a statewide annual celebration that falls under the purview of the Penang State Tourism Council. Other than the actual orange-throwing ceremony that takes place at the Esplanade, a sea-facing promenade that houses Penang’s oldest historical structures, revellers can expect street food bazaars, a grand fireworks display and cultural shows, including the unique-to-Penang dondang sayang float. In this highly anticipated event, members of the Baba Nyonya community – descendants of early Chinese settlers who drew major

Turut dikenali sebagai Hari Kekasih Cina, Chap Goh Meh disambut di seluruh Malaysia dimana terdapat ramai bilangan penduduk Cina. Dubbed the Chinese answer to Valentine’s Day, Chap Goh Meh is celebrated throughout Malaysia where there is a sizeable Chinese population.

Turut dikenali sebagai Hari Kekasih Cina, Chap Goh Meh disambut di seluruh Malaysia dimana terdapat ramai bilangan penduduk Cina Malah, penduduk di Lembah Klang sudah lama membanjiri taman awam, Taman Jaya untuk menyertai karnival tepi tasik ini. Di Melaka pula, sambutan Chap Goh Meh pernah diadakan di tepi bagan. Pernah sekali, perarakan perahu yang gemilang turut diadakan di sekitar bandar bersejarah tersebut. Daripada skala sambutannya, kemeriahan Chap Goh Meh di Pulau Pinang semestinya tiada bandingan. Chap Goh Meh turut diangkat sebagai pesta tahunan yang disambut di seluruh negeri di bawah kelolaan Majlis Tindakan Pelancongan Pulau Pinang. Acara melontar oren biasanya diadakan di Esplanade. Di sesiaran indah menghadap laut dan menempatkan pelbagai bangunan bersejarah tertua di Pulau Pinang itu, para pengunjung turut disajikan dengan aneka gerai makanan, percikan bunga api besar-besaran dan persembahan kebudayaan beserta perarakan Dondang Sayang terkemuka dengan kereta berhias. Dalam acara kemuncak ini, pesertanya yang terdiri daripada masyarakat berketurunan Baba Nyonya iaitu penghijrah awal dari China yang mempraktikkan gabungan budaya masyarakat Melayu dan Cina akan tampil dengan pakaian tradisional yang serba indah. Sambil mendendangkan balada cinta Peranakan iaitu Dondang Sayang, mereka akan berarak dengan bas berhias di semua lokasi terkemuka di Georgetown! Menurut Naib Presiden Persatuan Masyarakat Cina Pulau Pinang, Lillian Tong, tradisi ini dipercayai berasal sekitar tahun 1920-an. Sejak melibatkan diri dalam penganjuran acara ini pada 2004, Lillian yang juga pengarah muzium Pinang Peranakan Mansion berkata, “Dahulu,

para penyanyinya akan menaiki kereta lembu sebelum beralih kepada penggunaan kereta tanpa bumbung dan seterusnya bas sambil menghiburkan para pengunjung pada Hari Chap Goh Meh.” Kini, tradisi sambutan Chap Goh Meh turut berubah mengikut peredaran zaman. Jelas Lillian, “Masa kecil, makcik saya yang masih bujang akan pergi ke tujuh jambatan di sekitar Pulau Pinang untuk melontar oren. Bukannya di Esplanade. Dulu, orang akan bawa oren sendiri. Sekarang, oren boleh dibeli terus daripada gerai berdekatan. Kebanyakan anak muda sekarang juga akan tulis nombor telefon dan emel pada oren untuk senang dihubungi nanti.” Lillian berpesan: “Seelok-eloknya akan lebih bertuah kalau sebut tim kam than ho ang sebelum melontar. Dalam dialek Hokkien, ia bermaksud ‘lontar oren untuk mendapatkan suami yang baik’.”
The tradition can be traced back to the 1920s, according to Lillian Tong, Vice President of State Chinese (Penang) Association and Museum Director of the Pinang Peranakan Mansion. Part of the float since 2004, she shares, “Back then, dondang sayang minstrels would ride in bullock carts, before moving on to open-top cars and eventually buses, serenading revellers on the streets during Chap Goh Meh.” Invariably, Chap Goh Meh traditions have evolved to reflect the passing of time. “During my childhood, my maiden aunts threw their oranges into the waters of seven bridges on the island, rather than at the Esplanade seafront itself. In earlier times, people had to bring their own oranges, but today, oranges can be bought at stalls near the venue. Today, young girls write their email addresses and phone numbers on the oranges, so whoever picks up their orange, can easily get in touch with them,” says Lillian, with a laugh. Sharing a tip, she says, “Before they cast their oranges, it’s good luck to say, tim kam than ho ang, which in Hokkien means ‘throw Mandarin oranges, get a good husband.’”

The Plague Fighter
Dr Wu Lien-Teh was a giant in his field in the early 20th century. As a doctor and campaigner, he made inroads into the treatment of pneumonic plague and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1935. Words Siva Sithraputhran | Photography courtesy of The Dr Wu Lien-Teh Society, Penang
place, Wu was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1935. He was the first ethnic Chinese to receive such a nomination but did not win. By 1937, as Japan was advancing on China, Wu returned to Malaya as it was then known, to practise medicine, this time in the northern town of Ipoh, where he treated the poor for free.
Early Years Born in 1879 on Penang island, to first and second generation Chinese immigrants, it became clear from early on that Wu had immense talent. He went to Penang Free School, one of Malaya’s earliest schools, and won a competitive scholarship to go to Emmanuel College at Cambridge University where he excelled, winning several awards in the process.
Dr Wu Lien-Teh’s brush with colonial Britain was a mixed bag. He had won a prestigious scholarship to study at Cambridge, but oddly, as his reputation for opposing the opium trade was growing, he was tried for possessing a small amount of the drug in his clinic, at a time when it was commonly used to treat patients. The event in 1907 was a turning point for him. The young doctor who was then practising at his birthplace, Penang, turned his attention to China where he achieved some of his most notable work, only returning to Malaya 30 years later.
Modern Medicine Hero In 1910, Northern Manchuria was the scene of an outbreak of plague, with death rates of almost 100 percent. Many medical staff were also succumbing to the disease. Wu, already established in China since 1908, was sent to the area and proved crucial in helping to stop the epidemic and paved the way for Western-style public health medicine in China. He is credited for persuading the authorities to cremate the mounting number of corpses and

for getting permission to conduct autopsies. Both measures were unprecedented in China. He was also commended by various sources for devising an excellent sanitary service to prevent a repeat of the disaster. “The burning of the dead, which, though not unheard of in Chinese annals, still conjures up in the native mind all that is repulsive and contrary to natural feelings, yet once decided upon by the Government, was accepted by the people without complaint or hindrance,” he later told delegates at the International Plague Conference in the Manchurian city of Mukden (now Shenyang in Liaoning Province, China) in April 1911. Wu chaired the important conference, the first international scientific conference held in China, firmly establishing Chinese scientists as members of the international scientific community. Later, the North Manchurian Plague Prevention Service was set up with Wu as its director. Wu was also appointed the first director of China’s National Quarantine Service. With his legacy and achievements firmly in
Wu was the first ethnic Chinese to graduate in medicine from Cambridge. According to his obituary in the British Medical Journal, Emmanuel College gave him a research studentship at the School of Tropical Medicine in Liverpool under Sir Ronald Ross. He also had stints researching malaria and tetanus at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. He was a resident at Brompton hospital before returning to Malaya in 1903 to join the Institute of Medical Research in Kuala Lumpur. Wu wrote many research papers, which appeared in respected journals such as The Lancet. His work was not limited to medical issues but included wider concerns. In particular, he was greatly concerned by the scourge of opium addiction, which was affecting large numbers of his ethnic Chinese brethren. Wu gave generously to institutions of learning, donating money, books and works of art he collected while in China. He also had a sense of the importance of his own work, setting down his life’s work in an autobiography published in 1959 titled Plague Fighter: The Autobiography of A Modern Chinese Physician. Wu died a year later in Penang at the age of 81. ■

Proudly Malaysian Malaysia Airlines recently received its second A350-900 aircraft, this time sporting the special Negaraku livery. Group Chief Executive Officer Izham Ismail was at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport to greet the aircraft, which departed from Airbus’ factory in Toulouse, France. The A350-XWB, with the registration number 9M-MAC, carries the design of the Jalur Gemilang, the Malaysian flag. The aircraft has 286 seats with a three-class configuration, consisting of four seats in First Class, 35 in Business and 247 in Economy Class.

n What do you consider your greatest achievement? That’s a difficult question. An achievement would mean you have reached some pinnacle which I don’t think I have yet. Would it be boring to say my children? They are independent, kind and good people and I am proud of how they have turned out, which is not necessarily my achievement. n What about your greatest achievement in Malaysia Airlines so far? I’m not sure about achievement but
definitely one of the most memorable moments for me was when I took delivery of the B777-200 from Seattle in 1997. There was a moment in the cockpit somewhere over the Atlantic, where on one side it was daylight and the other night. Over this horizon, I saw the Hale Bopp Comet, where the head of the comet was in daylight and the tail in the night. Those were the days before smartphones were invented, so I couldn’t take a picture but the scene is one that has stayed with me. It was an amazing moment and I was reminded of the vastness of the universe and how small I am in the grand scheme of things. (Izham broke world aviation records when he flew Malaysia Airlines’ first B777-200 eastward from Seattle to Kuala Lumpur and back. The flight set new world records for the longest flight and fastest round-the-world flight by a commercial airliner, with a total flight time of 41 hours and 59 minutes covering a distance of 23,310 miles.) n Which is your favourite aircraft to fly? n Favourite airport to land?

I am a big Star Trek fan so I would have to say Captain Kirk! As a boy I loved how he took his team beyond boundaries and explored new frontiers. Indonesian Recognition Malaysia Airlines was named Indonesia’s Leading ASEAN Airline at the 8th Indonesia Travel Tourism Awards (ITTA) 2017/2018. Organised by the ITTA Foundation, the awards celebrate outstanding Indonesian travel and hospitality industry players who have demonstrated exemplary service towards customers. Commenting on the win, Chief Commercial Officer Arved von Zur Muehlen said the airline was happy to celebrate and reaffirm the strong ties between Malaysia and Indonesia. “This win will not be possible without the continued support from our customers and our team. It is a huge milestone for us as we continue breaking new ground to position ourselves as a premium carrier,” he said.

That momentary loss of rationality, especially when targeted at a person, can have deep repercussions. I don’t believe in regrets. It is a waste of time and all mistakes are valuable learnings.

Better Understanding Following a successful migration of its passenger service system to the Amadeus Altéa Suite in mid2017, Malaysia Airlines has once again partnered with global travel technology leader Amadeus IT Group to adopt the Amadeus Customer Experience Management system. The technology, which takes data about the traveller from multiple sources, builds a comprehensive, real-time picture of who the traveller is and integrates it with advanced personalisation logic to help the airline cater to travellers’ expectations and demands, from purchase of excess baggage to preference for chauffeur service upon arrival. The system is expected to help the airline understand its customers more intimately to deliver highly personalised offers across all touchpoints.

FOOTIE THRILLS Good news for Liverpool Football Club fans around the world! Malaysia Airlines will kick off its second Take Me To Anfield campaign to bring die-hard fans for a once-in-a-lifetime chance to visit the hallowed grounds of the club in May. The inaugural campaign in 2017 saw 18 lucky fans fulfilling their dreams, as they were not only flown out on an all-expense-paid trip to Anfield Stadium, they also got to play against an LFC side on the field, coached by none other than the Reds legends themselves. “It’s a childhood dream come true. Even from a young age, I’ve always wanted to set foot on the stadium,” says Abdul Rayjal Abdul Jalil from Sarawak, Malaysia, one of last year’s lucky winners. Others, like fellow Malaysian Umakarthigan Gopal, were overwhelmed with emotion, kissing the ground as they entered the field. “This is the highlight of my life as a Liverpool die-hard fan. I can proudly say that I’ve played here,” he proclaims. The 2017 contest saw fans submitting videos of their best footie tricks on camera, whilst also explaining why they deserved a chance to play on Malaysia Airlines’ MH Global Dream Team. Winners were shortlisted based on their skills and creativity. The finalists, who hailed from Malaysia, Singapore, United Kingdom, China, South Korea, Indonesia and Japan, were then flown to Liverpool for an exclusive tour of the stadium and a training session at Liverpool FC Academy, coached by legends Robbie Fowler and Gary McAllister, in preparation for the big game. The joy was palpable on match day. Cheered on by their coaches and other members of the Liverpool football team, the players dribbled, passed and scored their way through the game. Winners walked away with the champions’ trophy, but all participants left with memories that would last them for a lifetime. Stay tuned for details of the 2018 campaign in our coming issues. Safety + service info
Cabin Luggage handling Passenger and crew safety onboard our flights is our highest priority. In compliance with the airline’s policy and in observing Occupational, Safety and Health Regulations requirements, cabin crew are no longer required to stow passengers’ hand luggages into the overhead stowage compartment. This is to minimise occupational hazard and ergonomic risks faced by cabin crew in the aircraft. Cabin crew on duty will, however, assist passengers travelling with infants, young passengers travelling alone, the elderly, and passengers with reduced mobility. Passengers who are fit and in good health must carry, stow and secure their own hand luggages on board. Hand luggage exceeding the 7kg weight limit is required to be checked in before boarding.
Portable Electronic Devices (PED) For safety reasons and in line with the Department of Civil Aviation guidelines, mobile phones and all PEDs must be switched off once aircraft doors are closed. Whilst cruising, devices placed in flight mode may be used. The devices must again be switched off during the approach for landing until the aircraft is parked at the terminal building. Devices transmitting strong signals must remain switched off throughout the flight, until disembarkation. The Captain may prohibit the use of devices that can interfere with the aircraft’s system.
Lithium batteries Lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries for portable electronic devices (PEDs), including medical devices must not exceed 2g for lithium metal batteries and 100Wh for lithium ion batteries. All spare batteries, including lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries, for PEDs must be carried in passengers’ carry-on baggage only. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. For PEDs containing non-spillable batteries, they must be 12V or less or 100Wh or less. A maximum of two spare batteries may be carried. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.
Electronic cigarettes Electronic cigarettes must be carried on one’s person or in carry-on baggage only. Recharging of the device in-flight is not permitted.
Zero tolerance of abuse We value courteousness. Any form of threat, verbal abuse or violence towards our staff will be taken seriously. We are committed to supporting anyone who has been the victim of an assault.

A maximum of 2.5 kg of dry ice per passenger is permissible if dry ice is used to carry these items. We reserve the right to refuse carriage if the items are not properly packed.

At the same time, we hope that the "unity in diversity" expressed in this album will remind Malaysian artists to work with more local and international musicians from different cultural backgrounds. Ultimately, we hope that our labour of love will promote Malaysia's unique brand of multiculturalism to the world and bring Malaysian music to the forefront of a global musical audience.

How did Synesthesia come about?

The concept of "creatively-craftedchaos" came first. One of the main things we established for ourselves was that there shouldn't be any limitations or boundaries in creating our music. There are no genres we wouldn't explore and no ideas we would not entertain. Coming from different musical backgrounds, we allowed ourselves to be free in pursuing whatever sounds and styles that spark creativity and originality in our songwriting. Coincidentally, some of our members experience various forms of synesthesia. It is a condition where different senses get misaligned, triggering other senses, such as sound or music being perceived as colours, or perceiving colour as smell. We felt that this was the perfect description of what Nadir is about; a clash of the senses, musical colours and cultures in a unified sonic space.
As a band, what are your hopes and dreams for the local music industry?
Some sectors within the industry have a misguided perception of what listeners like or should like. We hope to change that for the better and reach a point where local audiences take immense pride in Malaysianmade music and willingly support the development of local talent. Without the homegrown support of Malaysians, our music industry has a high possibility of stagnating and being left behind in the global market. Given the unfortunate occurrence where artistic values come second to what is superficially digestible by the masses, we hope to educate our audiences through our music and art, and instil a deeper appreciation of music as a whole, rather than be dictated by what is trendy or narrowly decided by the powers that be. We also hope that our local music industry adopts a "look inwards" mentality when it comes to the promotion and marketing of mainstream music-related media. We may not be a band that Malaysians might want, but we are definitely one of the few bands that Malaysia needs!

Anniversary Kick-Off Visitors to Pavilion Kuala Lumpur enjoyed a breathtaking showcase of Malaysian culture and heritage at the World Lion and Dragon Dance Extravaganza, which saw 1,000 troupe members from all over Malaysia performing with 111 lions and two 27-metre-long dragons.
