O HO HO! Christmas is just around the corner and Santa has something special for you. Our December issue it is! This month has its holidays and there is no better way to celebrate the jolly good days than by travelling to the various destinations that we fly to. Among my own family and friends, it is mostly around the Christmas tree or New Year's Eve parties that the first plans for the following year's holidays are hatched. Choose the destination, buy the tickets, and plan and begin to imagine what you will see and experience with your loved ones. I can assure you that even the shortest trip – just a weekend somewhere – is enough to bring a sense of purpose to your days. In this thick, colourful book that is the world, there are no boring pages. I must say that it has been an interesting year for all of us at Firefly. The moving of our Singapore operations from Changi to Seletar Airport by the end of this year excites us as we look forward to provide each and every one of you with a fresh experience, in terms of comfort and convenience. Do spread this news to all your friends and family members so that they are not in for a shock when they get off the plane. It's good to note that throughout this year, we have launched various great offers, including an innovative reward campaign giving all our passengers something to win when a booking is made with us, and having launched the ‘FY is For You’ campaign earlier this year to sustain the business market, attract mass and leisure audiences, we still agree it was an awesome effort. We have continuously been about convenience and seamless service in short-haul air travel. As a testament to that, we were recently announced as the winner of the Malaysian Tourism Council Gold Award – Best Tourism Airline 2018, which is our proudest moment this year. With that, we sincerely thank you for the continuous trust that you have placed in us. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you. Enjoy the holidays, have a happy, joyous new year and we look forward to having you onboard in 2019. Have a pleasant flight.

Firefly Wins Malaysia Tourism Council Gold Award for Best Tourism Airline 2018

I

N recognition for its service offering convenience and seamless short-haul air travel, Firefly Airline was awarded the Malaysia Tourism Council Gold Award 2018 under the Airline category. Described as the ‘Oscars’ for the tourism and hospitality industry in Malaysia, the Malaysia Tourism Council Gold Awards recognises tourism businesses and brands that have created a positive image of the country abroad. Held recently at the Palace of The Golden Horses in Seri Kembangan, the 2018 edition saw the ‘Airline’ category added to the event, which gathers all national and local authorities, hotels,

restaurants, attractions, tour operators and travel agencies to celebrate excellence in the Malaysian heritage, culture, tradition and modern achievements. “Receiving an award of this eminence is an incredible privilege. This definitely highlights everything that Firefly has achieved since taking off and spreading its wings in 2007,” said Izra Izzuddin, the airline's Vice-President of Marketing and Communications. “Everyone in the team has worked incredibly hard to build a regional airline that provides a sustainable and reliable service for the communities we serve,” she added.

This win has added to the accolades that Firefly has received since its inception. On April 25, 2014, Firefly received an award in the Transportation, Travel and Tourism category. In 2012, the airline was named the ‘Most Promising Brand of the Year’ by Putra Brand Awards. In 2011 and 2017, Firefly was conferred “Superbrand” status, while other achievements included the 2010 Frost & Sullivan ‘Value Airline of the Year’ award and the ‘Green Initiative of the Year 2010’ award by Leaders in Aviation in conjunction with the Doha Aviation Summit. Firefly was also recognised as the ‘Best Brand in Aviation’ by BrandLaureate in 2010.

Concubine Lane in Ipoh Old Town

Revival, Hipster Style! F Doris Lim checks out three lanes in Ipoh, Perak that have undergone a glorious revival from its former concubine past, where Chinese tycoons and British oicers lived out extramarital solicitations during the city’s glory days of tin mining.

UELLED by mining fortunes as the world's largest producer of tin, Ipoh's past was a notorious hotbed of opium dens, nightlife and cabarets clubs, with beautiful mistresses aplenty housed in abodes located along three lanes in the city.

Fully Restored

In 2014, Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic was roped in to beautify a cluster of pre-

World War Two buildings with a series of wall murals. The lustre began to shine again in Ipoh with the greatest change propelled by homegrown talents in the Ipoh Heritage Quarter, a short walk from the Ipoh Railway Station. One of the earliest buildings to be converted into a homestay, 27 Concubine Lane, had been missing a roof and first floor, had no cement floors, water or electricity, and had an open drain that ran the entire length of the house! Concubine Lane, which is just three metres wide, is the most vibrant of the three “mistress” lanes. Today, the old Chinese family houses there have been restored and converted into homestays and small businesses selling souvenirs, colourful ice balls and tong sui (sweet soups/ desserts), with the vibe of weekend flea markets and craft bazaars.

Youngsters will enjoy the Heritage Trail through the cluster of restored buildings in the Kong Heng Square Artisan Market. There are three shops offering handcrafted and custom-made items, as well as multiple kiosks and booths selling all sorts of knick-knacks and souvenirs, an art gallery, a barbershop, and an antique and sundry store. There are plenty of Instagram-worthy spots, props and even “Talking Trees” with motivational quotes to inspire social media influencers aspiring to Insta fame.

Food Pit Stop

According to folklore, mining tycoon Yao Tet Shin had given the three lanes to his three wives as gifts. Hence, the names: Wife Lane (Lorong Hale), Concubine Lane (Lorong Panglima) and Second Concubine Lane (Market Lane). This was where

wealthy Chinese merchants and British officers kept their mistresses away from their wives. Ipoh had evolved rapidly from a sleepy village to a prosperous town that tin built until the collapse of tin prices in the 1980s brought about the quiet neglect and decay of the pre-war buildings. As the glitzy nostalgic era of conspicuous consumption faded, its old buildings were reduced to an eyesore and the city became relegated as a pleasant place to retire. It became a food pit stop for travellers shuttling between Malaysia's capital of Kuala

Lumpur and the island of Penang in the north.

Roaring Back

A throwback to the 1950s, the restored Sekeping Kong Heng was once used as a hostel for Cantonese opera performers before it burnt down. Peeling back the layers of a decrepit space, much of the building's character is revealed through an inner courtyard which has been updated with a modern interior of glass, steel, wire cages, chipboard walls, and even a rooftop pool. The building of a hotel suspended within

remnant old walls, complete with billowing white curtains, is an exercise in sensitivity pulled off artistically by the designer. Sultry and charming, Sekeping Kong Heng reminds you of a neglected boudoir of a mistress of years gone by. The clever mix of quirkiness, full-grown trees, raw brick walls, and enhanced by a laid-back yet industrial feel has made it a fashionable hangout for visitors to browse and while away balmy afternoons.

Café Culture vs Kopitiam

The opening of the café, Plan b, continued the momentum of breathing in a rousing blend of nostalgia and modernity to Ipoh by introducing café culture to this old city. Just next door, Restaurant Ipoh Kong Heng, the most famous traditional kopitiam in Ipoh with its heady aroma of original white coffee,

jostles for airspace with the café's coffee machine. Going by the crowds, it appears that the breakfast crowd may prefer the banter of hawkers to jazz, and the point-and-order method to reading off the menu. Restaurant Ipoh Kong Heng and Restaurant Thean Chun remain a hit with locals and hipsters alike, as they indulge in Beef Noodles, Chee Cheong Fun, Lobak, charcoal-grilled Satay, and creamy Egg Custards. Thean Chun is a must-visit kopitiam in Ipoh for its silky kai see hor fun or Ipoh hor fun. Ipoh's Old Town is no longer quiet and laidback. With its hipster comeback, the city is now enjoying a surge in popularity with the younger crowd who can take a stroll back in time to appreciate the simplicity of slurping white coffee from a classic vintage cup.

Local produce are cheap and fresh

Hidden Gem Having heard a lot about this quiet star of Kuching, Francis See heads out to the village of Serikin at the border of Sarawak and Indonesia to check out its 20 year old market.

W

E started our journey to Serikin at 6am. Having heard a lot about the Serikin border market from friends, I knew it was one of the places that I had to visit.

Traders try not to turn away their first customer of the day

Economically Important

To get to Serikin, you need to get onto the Borneo Highway and allow yourself an hour's drive. Since we left in the morning, traffic was smooth, with clear blue skies and the beauty of the Sarawakian landscape as our backdrop. It was a tranquil prelude to the bustling market that I was really looking forward to. The market is located in Kampung Serikin, a small Bidayuh town in the Bau area of Sarawak. As it is located very close to the Indonesian border, traders from 18 ~ FireFlyz

across the border come here to hawk their wares. This is an Indonesian market run mainly by Indonesians on the Malaysian side of the border. To put it simply, it's an Indonesian market without having to visit Indonesia. The market is open only on the weekends, until 6pm. Locals, who see the market as important to their economy, offer the open spaces outside their homes as parking spaces. You can't drive through the town on the weekends.

Spreading the Fortune

As we entered the market, we were greeted by several baruk along the banks of a river which we crossed. Baruk is a traditional Bidayuh ceremonial house. The market stretches along a road that runs right through the village. The first impression is one of unfamiliarity. Almost everything for sale had been brought from across the border. For Malaysians, this is the chance to hunt down treasures that they would not normally find in their local wet market, and for the

tourist, this is certainly an unusual experience within the boundaries of Malaysia. The market stalls are crammed with a selection of Indonesian batik, songket, crafts, traditional home remedies, snacks, and also antiques and musical instruments. There are also fruit stalls where owners will offer a taste, bamboo crafts from baskets to chairs, and even a stall selling ovens! All the items are very competitively priced, even before bargaining. I was told that the market is at its busiest just before Hari Gawai (Harvest Festival). No surprise really, considering the vast variety of items for sale. I found items such as glass food trays and decorative copper trays that were calling out to be used during festivals. At one of the first stalls where we made a purchase, the owner rubbed the money over the rest of his products to ensure that the good fortune continues throughout the day. These small gestures made us aware that they are people from another culture; similar yet very different.

The gorgeous sky enhanced the experience

Traders try their best never to refuse the offer of their first customer of the day, which made our early arrival a good idea. However, prices are already cheap, so bargain just for the fun of it. Right at the end of the road is a wet market with fresh produce for sale but you won't find vegetables imported from a distant land here. Everything is locally grown or had come from just across the border, and the choices are seasonal. They are as fresh as they come. Traders called out as we walked by, trying to entice us to stop to inspect their produce and perhaps, to buy something. We were there for a few hours before the humidity and heat made us really sticky. We finished our shopping quickly and headed back to the car, and found more visitors arriving. It gets really crowded towards the afternoon. Just by the word of mouth, the Serikin border market has grown, but it is still offering great prices, variety, and bargains. It is gradually becoming a tourist fixture, and this is the time to visit whilst it still has a very local flavour and vibe. FireFlyz ~ 19

Angels Among Us

Christmas is a time for giving and receiving – not just for humans but animals too. Adrian Fernandez speaks to the everyday miracle performers who quietly move amongst us, helping strays and abandoned animals in need.

SARAH CAISSE Homemaker

The youngest of three girls, Sarah grew up in South Carolina, USA, where the family had many animals roaming around, from cats and dogs to hamsters, rabbits, frogs and squirrels. This made her aware of the creatures around her, and got her into rescuing. The mother of three, who has been in Kuala Lumpur for six years, said her biggest challenge is balancing her family's needs and the responsibilities of rescuing and rehabilitating animals so that they will make a positive impact in their new home. Saving a life is part of the reward, and the other part is seeing the joy that kittens bring to their new families. “In the six years we've lived in KL, I noticed that most children are not exposed to any kind of wildlife or pets. They come to my house and are amazed to see my children pick up a beetle and carefully move it outside. Parents tell me how much this has affected their child's perspective,” she said, adding that the children gain awareness and become caretakers themselves. Sarah is currently working on a programme with an international school to get pupils involved in fostering and TNR (trap, neuter, release). If the programme is successful, she plans to get more schools on board.

If the animal needs help, you must first find a safe place to keep it – either at the vet or a halfway home. A rescued animal does not deserve to be in an environment that is hostile and cold after you have rescued it.”

“Saving a life is part of the reward, and the other part is seeing the joy that kittens bring to their new families.” 20 ~ FireFlyz

“If the animal needs help, you must first find a safe place to keep it – either at the vet or a halfway home. A rescued animal does not deserve to be in an environment that is hostile and cold after you have rescued it.”

Sherrina grew up in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, which gave her a first-hand look at how stray animals lived. She founded the Independent Pet Rescuers Malaysia (IPRM) in 2006 after creating Malaysia's first Dogs and Cats Calendar, to raise awareness about adopting rescued animals. “Animal non-governmental organisations were trying their best but they had limited resources and no new ideas to spur a serious look at adopting, neutering or spaying. The sale of the calendars got us into malls, flea markets and schools, which gave us a wider reach to educate people about pet ownership and responsibility,” she explained. Sherinna currently heads IPRM with partner Catherine Leyow, with about 20 volunteers to help them rescue and rehome strays.

To her, rescuing is something that needs careful thought and planning. “If the animal needs help, you must first find a safe place to keep it – either at the vet or a halfway home. A rescued animal does not deserve to be in an environment that is hostile and cold after you have rescued it,” she said. Educating people to spay and neuter – not just their own pets but strays in their community – is one of their biggest challenges as people generally think “it's not my problem”. Despite being heartbreaking work, especially when one sees countless animals suffering from abuse, neglect and hunger, Sherinna keeps at it. “Whenever I save a stray from the streets, the love and gratification I feel is so powerful. My true and honest self is here – doing work for the animals,” she said.

Paul grew up in Porsgrunn, Norway – a small town of 30,000 people – where he never once encountered an animal in need of rescue. Coming to Malaysia, seeing the poor condition of strays on the streets, filled him with frustration. “It was my girlfriend who pushed me into taking a cat, Moxy, home. We cleaned her and took her to the vet, and after a few weeks, she was adopted. After Moxy, we took in another kitten which was also successfully rehomed,” he said, adding that this led them to begin rescuing strays around their university and neighbourhood. One of the hardest things about rescuing, according to Paul, is that strays are not always healthy. Even if they are, things can change fast. “We had a litter of eight kittens on campus. They started getting sick one after another in their second month. By the time we started to help, it was too late. (But) with everyone's help, we managed to save three kittens from an illness that would have taken them all,” he said. Since Paul and his friends started rescuing, the results in their area have been encouraging, which motivates him to continue. “In the beginning, most of the campus cats and kittens were sick, dirty and thin. Now the campus has a few cats that are the perfect picture of health,” he said.

JACQUELINE TSANG CHOW MING Animal Welfare Activist

Jacqueline, from Sandakan in Sabah, is a person of few words. When she is not seeing to the needs of animals, she is actively participating and organising activities to educate the public about strays, what can be done to help them and how to keep the population down. “I started rescuing because I felt such sadness in seeing these animals, and I wanted to do something that would make a difference in their lives,” she explained. Jacqueline felt that there is a definite lack of empathy towards animals. “They have feelings as well, and just want to be loved,” she said. She is hoping that the work she does will be a catalyst for change, and said if she can change the mindset of just one person, it will be a success. “If you want to adopt, understand that a pet is for life, not just for a moment,” she stressed.

Najwa's story started with her cat Bubu – a kitten that had been abandoned by its mother at the back of her house. The kitten had an accident that left it with a spine fracture. A young Najwa begged her father for money for an operation, and while all eventually turned out well, the incident taught her a

lot about responsibilities. “I learned that all lives matter. I now have around 70 rescued cats in my sanctuary,” she said. There are many challenges, especially when it comes to resources and budget. One also needs a strong heart and mind as rescuing requires effort and commitment. Najwa follows a strict vetting process when it comes to people who are interested in adopting. “I do not want these animals to be back on the streets again,” she said. “These rescued animals have gone through enough.” She wants people to be responsible pet owners, and not think of animals as disposable when they become inconvenient. “We, humans, need people to help, comfort and love us. The same applies to these animals,” she said.

SASA CHIAN Yoga & Dance Instructor

A few years ago, Sasa decided to find out her three main fears in life. Interestingly enough, one of them was the fear of cats and dogs. Determined to get over it, she went to a friend who had a dog and spent some time getting to know the animal. That was the spark that lit the flame. Sasa started rescuing strays in earnest in her old neighbourhood in Old Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur. It was slow-going at first but her family and neighbours soon got involved. The neighbours would send strays her way, knowing that she would look after them and get them rehomed. She has since learnt to tend to wounds, do CPR on dogs and physiotherapy for the animals. One of her biggest frustrations with potential adopters is that some do not want to neuter the animals, which she said is the only way to control their population and stop them from being abandoned. Her advice to anyone who may want to start rescuing? “Get a mentor, read and do research. Don't run before you can walk. Start with one, and be mindful of your financial resources,” she advised.

ROSY KIM Full-Time Animal Rescuer

Rosy, an American, moved from Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur last year to be with her fiance. When he brought home a skinny, flea-ridden kitten that he had found in a puddle, the pair scrambled to nurse it back to health. “Cleo soon became the light and joy of Rosy's life – but she realised that not all strays are as lucky, and that there are many dogs and cats out there destined to die on the streets. Deciding to change that prospect as much as possible, she teamed up with friend and fellow animal rescuer, Sasa Chian. One of Rosy's biggest frustrations is the lack of education on responsible pet ownership, citing incidences of people who are willing to part with their cats even after they have been with them for years. “If you are not willing to care for an animal for their entire life, please, don't have a pet. You can't abandon them because you are bored, busy or think that they are too expensive to keep,” she says.

The Sounds of Bali Intrepid traveller Doris Lim stumbles upon a sanctuary of sounds at the Pyramids of Chi, and tries out a different kind of relaxation session.

W

HEN my Balinese friend offered to take me to a healing centre that uses sound waves, I was all ears. I-Made, my friend, said in all seriousness, “I am going to take you to the Pyramids of Chi, here in Ubud.” Pyramids in Ubud? The Great Pyramids of Giza replicated as two built-to-scale pyramids? What sorcery is this? To say that I was intrigued would have been an understatement. Peter McIntosh sharing his vision with guests

A Vision Come True

Ubud's most remarkable wellness centre, the Pyramids of Chi, is a place of sound healing. It is set on a tranquil knoll of lush paddy fields accessible through narrow winding streets. The pyramids are a smaller version of the mysterious structures built by the ancient Egyptians thousands of years ago. Amidst the flowering frangipani, lazy stray dogs and the sounds of gentle ripples, these celestial structures look remarkably benign and at home, comfortable in their surroundings. I wandered barefoot around the beautiful spacious grounds, surrounded by the lush countryside, taking deep breaths of fresh air. We sipped warm tea to relax as we listened to the briefing on what was in store for us. The founder Peter McIntosh and his wife Lyn set out to build the twin pyramids based on a vision which they received through deep meditation. The tale recounted by McIntosh was jaw-dropping. From finding a paddy field on a knoll to securing the end financing, each step of the project seemed to be

guided and blessed by mysterious forces as things gradually fell into place. Their journey was a four-year test of patience and faith, and after overcoming many challenges, the centre finally opened in 2017.

Phi of the Universe

The beautiful environment of the Pyramids of Chi

All ancient Pyramids around the world are built according to the Golden Ratio, the ‘Sacred Geometry’, or Phi, which is present in the universe, in all of nature, creation, and in the human body right down to our DNA. I had once read that our DNA has sound-like bubbles whizzing around at a frequency of a few terahertz or a billion times higher than a dog can hear! This may offer an explanation as to why the pyramids, which mirror the harmonic structure of the universe, are able to harmonise, balance and reset our body when we are exposed to it. Despite the volcano scares last year, almost 8,000 visitors made their way here to experience the “magic” through the design and alignment replicated to harness the now-recognised “Pyramid Power”. Walking towards the restaurant after the session

The Session

I was ready to take in the sacred design, magnetic positioning and ancient sounds, and ready to tap into the unmistakable energy that exists in Bali and in the magical environment of Ubud. We were led to the Pyramid of the Sun; its interior designed to encourage a state of total relaxation, featuring dark brown inverted walls and a warm wooden floor, bathed in low lighting. Traditional instruments were laid out in the centre of the room - enormous gongs, large powwow drums, Himalayan bowls, bells and even the didgeridoo. These instruments were apparently originally created as tools for healing and not for their musical qualities! I chose one of the floor mattresses, mindful to be away from the gong. There was a pillow for my head and a bolster for my knees. We were told to lie flat on our

back, legs slightly apart and palms facing upwards. I covered my eyes with a small beanbag. There was a faint comforting scent of aromatic oils. We were lulled into a deeply restful state, beginning with breathing counts. I dozed off effortlessly.

The Experience

Oddly enough, I received no vision, dreams or flashbacks. I woke to the sounds of deep snoring from the person on the next mattress. There was soft crying in a distant corner. I saw one of the gong masters comforting someone. The experience of each individual is different, from feeling relaxed, totally energised or even emotional. I came out of the session, feeling

refreshed and relaxed. It was the best deep sleep I had had in years. The sounds and frequencies of the instruments relax the body's cells, muscles and energy systems. This method of healing is an effective and enjoyable way to rebalance and harmonise our inner wellbeing. Later that evening at dinner, we shared our experiences. The ripple effect of this gift of therapeutic vibrations and frequencies had impacted our small group in more ways than we had foreseen. This had certainly been a new experience. Would I go back? I felt calm, relaxed and rested after the session. In today's fast-paced world, who would not want that? Yes, I would definitely go back. FireFlyz ~ 29

The torii gates of the Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine

Three Marvellous Days

in Kyoto The cradle of Japanese culture and tradition, Kyoto is a city ďŹ lled with centuries-old history, Buddhist temples, gorgeous gardens and storied streets. Yukeshwaran Devadas gives us a glimpse of old Japan.

W

HEN I exited Kyoto Station, modern buildings and people moving about quickly were the first things that I saw. This had me wondering if Kyoto's old-world charm had been surpassed by today's materialistic sprawl. Then, like a distant memory gradually returning to consciousness, the city's past regained form and definition. Artistic shrines, wooden houses and humble streets, against a backdrop of the warm hues of red, orange and yellow of the maple trees, set the scene. It was the piece of Japan that I had always wanted to see.

Timeless Temples

One of the most iconic images of Kyoto, if not Japan,

is the bright vermillion torii gates of the Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, my first destination. This shrine was built in the year 711 and is dedicated to Inari, the God of Rice. Getting there early was a joy as I got to soak up the scenery minus the crowds. Located at the foot of the Inari Mountain, the main shrine is predominantly painted vermillion with golden ornaments gleaming in the gentle sunlight to further accentuate its grandeur. Omokaru Stone is another attraction: two lanterns topped with a heavy ornament called giboshi. The locals, after

saying a prayer, will lift one of the stones. This is done in the hope that it had become significantly lighter, indicating that their wish had been granted. The row of torii gates, numbering more than 10,000 that arch over a 4km path up the Inari Mountain, is stunning. The striking vermillion colour and kanji writing over each torii is postcard perfect. The route upwards branches out into networks of ornate shrines and fox statues that told of the shrine's glorious past. Since it was autumn, the colourful backdrop of trees made the scenery even more gorgeous. After 30 minutes, I reached a viewpoint which opened up unobstructed views of the city and distant mountains. A further one hour later, I reached the smaller shrines that were equally impressive. My next temple stop was the Kinkaku-ji Temple, also known as the Golden Pavilion. The Zen Buddhist Temple sits by a placid lake and is surrounded by lush greenery. The top two floors are wrapped in gold leaf, and its reflection on the rippled surface of the water, together with the wide sky and colours of autumn, was hypnotic. I lost track of time as FireFlyz ~ 31

Extremely well-preserved wooden buildings in Hanamikoji street in the district of Gion

Much of its charm comes from the peaceful and secluded environment, and the beauty of the willow trees that form a green canopy over the water.

A Really Old Market

Apart from sightseeing, another goal was to pamper my taste buds with authentic Japanese food which led me to the Nishiki Market, a famous market located in central Kyoto that runs for six blocks (400 metres). Nicknamed “Kyoto's Kitchen”, it first opened in 1310 as a humble fish market but is today a gastronomic heaven with over 150 stalls lining the covered alleyway. Even if you're blindfolded, the I wandered through the gardens that encircle the temple, soaking in the sheer aura of peace.

Stepping Back in Time

For a window into old Kyoto's charm and customs, I made a visit to Gion, an entertainment district that has plenty to offer. Echoes of the past were reflected in the exquisitely preserved townhouses and teahouses, as well as waitresses dressed in elaborate kimonos. I also spotted all kinds of matcha or green tea-based food items and beverages at every turn since Kyoto is regarded as the finest matcha producer in the country. If green is Gion's signature colour, the scent of yakitori might be its signature fragrance. As the afternoon wore on

into the evening, the district gradually lit up like a living lantern. The warm light and vintage decor had a distinctive allure as each restaurant tried to outdo the other in their beauty. My favourite street has to be Hanamikoji, known as the most historical street in Gion. I simply could not get enough of the architectural style of ancient Imperial Kyoto. Bamboo blinds hang from second-floor windows, and exclusive teahouses with elegantly-dressed hosts at the door to welcome customers. Amazingly, the streets were spotless considering the number of tourists that visit daily. Just when I thought I had seen all that Gion had to offer, I discovered the Shirakawa Canal, one of the most picturesque parts of the city.

aromas would lead the way. First to whet my appetite was – tako tamago – a baby octopus stuffed with a quail's egg. Despite it appearing to be a savoury dish, it had a strange yet flavourful balance of salty and sweet. Since most Japanese snacks come in dainty sizes, I lost count of the number of mochis and sesame dumplings I ate. There was an array of handmade crafts, ceramics and textiles as well but the most visited shop is Aritsugu, one of the country's finest purveyor of knives with a history tracing all the way back to 1560. They were originally swordsmiths and over time, turned their skills to kitchen knives. Despite not knowing much about knife-making, it was a joy to watch these tools being made with such precision and patience.

Omurice Craze

To wrap up the day, I headed to Pontocho, a narrow alley which runs parallel to the Kamogawa River, and to Kichi Kichi, a restaurant making a name for itself for its omurice or Japanese omelette rice. Located in a small lane, it has room for only 10 diners at a time. I had to make an online reservation a month before.

The streets of Japan are spotless despite the number of people visiting the country

The interior, with wooden furnishing and mellow lighting, was cosy, and I was welcomed to a counter seat by the chef himself, who later put on a show with his wok and utensils. When the omurice was served before me, the omelette was slowly sliced with a fluid stroke of the chef's knife, allowing the runny insides to envelop the fried rice sitting beneath. Then, a demi-glace sauce was ladled over the dish.

The sauce was mildly flavoured so as not to overpower the subtle sweetness of the egg while the fried rice acted as a vehicle to highlight the flavours. This was more than just a delicious meal. This was a gastronomic experience. To most visitors, Kyoto may not be the first destination they think of when planning a visit to Japan but it should be. I spent three days in Kyoto, time enough for me to fall in love with the city. FireFlyz ~ 33

to head to Pai town where the streets are filled with an eclectic mix of boutique shops and cosy cafés, with scooters weaving their way along. After a heavy lunch – and gathering information about nearby attractions – I rented a scooter and hit the road. My first destination was Pai Canyon, a picturesque canyon located approximately eight kilometres south of Pai town. Some claim it to be Thailand's answer to the Grand Canyon, though on a smaller scale. The ride leading up to the canyon was bumpy but the gorgeous views along the way made it worthwhile. The canyon was a sight to behold, with its red ridges and orange soil. Though the path to the third viewpoint was narrow and ran through dense greenery, I decided to brave it to see the sunset. Conquering the rugged route was a challenge as I had to scramble up on my hands and knees but it was worth it. As the sun gradually transformed the sky into shades of lavender, rose and orange, warm expressions were etched on the faces of the few who made it up here. The silence was only interrupted by soft murmurs of “wows” and camera clicks.

Bat Man

By the time I returned to town, Pai Walking Street was a hive of activity. The streets were lined with stalls selling personalised postcards, handmade clothing from the highland villages, artistic knick-knacks and of course, the heartbeat of any Thai market, food! Apart from Thai cuisine, there were also falafels, fresh smoothies, barbequed meats and lots of deep-fried goodies. Whatever your culinary bent, you'll have a great time here. The fried vegetarian dumplings were my favourite, followed by the baked potatoes and aromatic masala tea. The best part? Everything was wallet-friendly. I was still itching for adventure so the next day, I made my way to Lod Cave. Since it was over 40km from town, I hired a local cab. The vast views of paddy fields and mountains were calming, and I felt myself zoning out. Lod Cave was, by far, the most unique cave I had ever visited due to the fact that a river flows through it. As such, a bamboo raft is needed to explore the cave. Since it was cheaper to hire a

raft with a tour guide in a group of three, I joined a young couple. Like any cave occupied by bats, the stench of guano was overwhelming but it was part of the experience. The initial sections were quite shallow but there were still many fish swimming around. At certain points, we were able to get out of the raft to explore on foot, climbing up rickety stairs and ladders to get a closer view of the limestone stalactite and stalagmite formations. There were also ancient ceramics, wall paintings of deer, and teakwood coffins that are thought to have been carved by the Lawa tribespeople thousands of years ago. This had given the cave its nickname, Spirit Cave.

Natural Spa Treatment

Pai is blessed with numerous hot springs suitable for all budgets. I opted for the Sai Ngam “Secret” Hot Springs since it's said to be off the beaten path. Located in the Lum Nam Pai Sanctuary Park, the shallow lagoon is the epitome of what natural springs are about. The clear water reflected the sweep of lush forest, with no signs of landscaping. Despite the name, this spot is no secret as there were plenty of tourists leaning at the edges of the pool. A local from the Karen hill tribe shared a common practice of rubbing the mud, which is rich in essential minerals, all over your body. I smeared my arms, legs and face with the free, earth-based cream and waited for it to dry before dipping into the

organically-formed pool. The water was lukewarm and is blessed with high levels of magnesium, sodium and sulphur, thanks to its geological conditions. When I finally scraped off the muddy patches, my skin felt extremely smooth and my senses fully rejuvenated.

One of the best moments was sipping freshly brewed coffee with a slice of chocolate cake while taking in the scenery of Pai's countryside at Coffee In Love. In a country known for its spicy, zesty delicacies and deep-fried goodies, my favourite eatery was Earth Tone, a vegetarian restaurant that even meat-lovers would appreciate. The menu revolves around organic, locally-sourced ingredients with an eye on creativity. I chomped down moussaka made with wild mushrooms, beans, sweet potato, pumpkin and quinoa, and waffles topped with a pile of fresh fruits. To wash it down, their Rastafarian Coffee – black coffee with coconut milk – couldn't be better. Talk about being healthy and tasty at the same time. When it was time to leave, saying goodbye was hard. This is a town that needs more than just a couple of days to explore. I will return for a longer visit.

The food scene in Seapark in the neighbourhood of Petaling Jaya in Selangor is anything but ordinary, a place where a myriad of cultures mix and mingle in delicious harmony. Adding her own blend of spices from the Land of Hornbills to this melting pot is Aunty Christina’s Sarawak Laksa.

A

THROWBACK to the sleepy towns of bygone days, Seapark remains a destination for great food. If you become a regular at any of the outlets here, you will eventually come to recognise familiar faces as each eatery has a loyal and steady following. It comes as no surprise that this is the location that Aunty Christina, a cheerful lady who is no stranger to the Sarawak food scene, has chosen to set up her own eatery in 2017. For over 20 years, she had been operating from a stall in the Nam Chun café in Bangsar where she sold Sarawak Laksa and other Sarawakian delights.

Bold Flavours

Arriving at the shop just before lunchtime, I was surprised to find only a few empty seats. I managed to get a table and went for the star dish, Sarawak Laksa. A family recipe that she brought over from Kuching in Sarawak, Aunty Christina's Sarawak Laksa is said to be one of the best in Kuala Lumpur. Thin bihun noodles are served with fresh bean sprouts, cilantro, strips of chicken, shredded omelette and a wedge of lime. The fresh ingredients are doused in a thick creamy broth and topped with two juicy prawns. Unlike typical curry noodles where the contents are fully submerged in the broth, Aunty Christina's version has the perfect ratio of contents to broth, allowing the ingredients to fully soak in its goodness. Packing a serious punch in flavour, the black pepper – which is another famed product of Sarawak – shines through the broth, giving it richness and depth. Adding the lime introduces a new element to the dish, allowing me to enjoy different dimensions to the flavours. Customers may opt for mee or bihun mee,

according to their preference. A notable feature of the Sarawak Laksa served here is the size of the prawns which are succulent and juicy, and complement the robust flavours of the dish. Aunty Christina has upped the ante for seafood lovers by offering an option with two king-sized prawns – and while understandably slightly pricier than the original, it is worth it.

Diversifying the Selection

If you think Sarawak Laksa is the only crowd-puller here, you are in for a treat as other Sarawakian household dishes feature on her menu as well. Little packets of traditional Sarawakian yam cake are on sale at the entrance, and

is the perfect appetiser while waiting for your main meal. Another of Aunty Christina's specialities is kacangma chicken, a dish unique to Sarawak and made using herbs known as motherwort. The dish leans slightly towards the bitter side and may be an acquired taste but its health benefits are immense. Sarawak Kolo Mee, another staple dish from the state, is also a popular choice with Aunty Christina's fans. Those looking to dip their toes into Sarawakian culture through its food will definitely find Aunty Christina's Sarawak Laksa the perfect jumping-off platform. Food from the heart, and with a legacy that continues to grow, it is evident that Aunty Christina is here to stay.

Lankan

Heat

Malaysians love their spices and will travel far for dishes that can challenge their heat meter. Fireflyz tries out the Sri Lankan fare offered by the famed Lankan Café in Petaling Jaya.

L

OCATED on the first floor of a corner shop in Bukit Gasing, Lankan Café is a popular destination for authentic Sri Lankan food and has made waves since its opening. Weekend afternoons are usually packed with diners, so much so that reservations might be needed to secure a table.

Sealing in the Flavours

The café decor is a quirky mix of cosy, modern and chic on the one side, while the other end is a more casual setting. This worked well to cater to two types of diners – those planning to have a full meal and those wanting a place to chat over tea and Sri Lankan desserts. Lankan Cafe's menu offers a good variety, but my attention was on the Negombo Lunch Packet which was recommended by the waiter. The lunch packet comes with meat such as mutton, chicken, fish or

Light, aromatic and fluffy in the middle, with a golden brown flaky crust encircling it like a dome, the appam is nothing short of perfection

egg, and there is also a vegetarian option. I was told that the Negombo Lunch Packet is made using Basmati rice cooked with meat or vegetables, chilli, onions, leeks and venthiya kolumbu (fenugreek seed curry) before being wrapped in a banana leaf. Unwrapping the banana leaf, I was immediately entranced by the aroma of spices, some of which I recognised but some, I did not. The portion is generous and can be shared. The spices hit all the right notes without overwhelming the dish, a testament to the experience of the chef. There was a good mix of vegetables and meat, making it a deliciously balanced meal. Other popular items include iddiyappam (string hoppers), puttu (steamed circles of brown rice), and kottu roti (slices of flatbread mixed with meat, vegetables and spices). Lunch features a range of

set meals. For those looking to go big or go home, they may opt for the Biryani Extravaganza – a buffet featuring several biryani options, sambals, curries and raita, on Saturdays.

A Sweet Treat

Lankan Café is a must for the main dishes but don't miss the desserts. Its appams are to die for. Noticing how every other table seems to have this dish in their order, I was keen to sample it, and it

did not disappoint. They serve two varieties – paal appam and egg appam. I went for the former. Light, aromatic and fluffy in the centre, with a golden brown flaky crust which encircled it like a dome, it was nothing short of perfection. The egg version adds a creamier edge to the dish. If you are looking for good, authentic Sri Lankan food that won't leave a hole in your wallet, head over to Lankan Café.

Food from the Palace

Colin Raj checks out Malabar Palace in Hartamas Shopping Centre in Kuala Lumpur to discover Keralan cuisine worth trumpeting about.

I

was greeted warmly and shown to a seat as soon as I walked in. Although it was slightly early for lunch, a few tables were already occupied. I took that as a good sign. The ala carte menu had many choices, a bit too many for my weakfrom-hunger brain to deal with. I took the easy way out and ordered one of their set lunches. I am a bit wary about set lunches because they can be a hit-and-miss affair. Some places serve small portions while others serve dishes which leave diners wanting. Thankfully, this was not the case here. There is a choice of two types of chicken, fish, prawn or mutton. Each set comes with a drink, pickles, a refreshing cucumber and onion salad, dhall and papadum. You can also choose either white rice or naan. I went for the Chicken Masala Set.

I did not have to wait too long for my food to be served. The chicken had a wonderful aroma, and the dhall was thick, piping hot and delicious. I tore into my naan, scooping up spoonfuls of dhall and curry to douse it. The chicken curry was

outstanding. It was not too spicy or too sweet. Everything was just the right balance, and each bite brought more flavours to the fore. The pieces of tender chicken were generous in size too. As I mopped up the last of the curry with my final bit

of bread, I noticed that the place was filling up, with a few groups of office workers arriving. I was pleased that I had come in before lunch hour kicked in. Good food and good service at a good price. You really can't ask for more.

The chicken was tender and flavourful

Soul Food

The Lamb Shank was tender and delicious.

Fat Olive Food Garage is a charming restaurant with an imaginative menu. Fireflyz can a est to the hype surrounding the place.

T

HE Fat Olive Food Garage is the brainchild of business partners Stacee Lau and Chef Kiki Garcia. Lau manages the front of the house while Garcia is the man who makes the magic happen in the kitchen. Their previous outlet had been in Petaling Jaya. They closed it to take a well-deserved break. After a hiatus, they are back with their trademark great food and service. Located at The Verve shops in Mont Kiara, Kuala The Iberico Pork Burger is the burger other burgers aspire to be.

Lumpur, the restaurant has an industrial, yet charming, ambience. Large front windows let in plenty of natural light. The metal and repurposed wood gives the impression that one is in a garage. Those who choose to dine all'aperto will find themselves surrounded by manicured plants. After a careful perusal of the menu, I ordered an Iberico Pork Burger, with my colleague going for the Sous Vide Lamb Shank on Mushroom Risotto. The restaurant has a noteworthy wine and spirit selection but

Fat Olive Food Garage's rustic atmosphere.

as it was early in the day, we opted for soft drinks. We did not have to wait too long for our food to be served. Visually, the food was beautiful, and thankfully, the taste did not disappoint. The burger was well presented on a serving board and was delicious, with just the right amount of ingredients – semidried tomatoes, caramelised onions, melted mozzarella, bacon and Jalapeno aioli – to assault the senses. The lamb, meanwhile, looked too heavenly to be

eaten but on first bite, was fall-off-the-bone tender, and moist with all the flavours locked in. The meat was a perfect complement to the mushroom risotto, mashed potatoes, roasted garlic and rosemary sauce drizzled onto the dish. We had heard that its desserts were divine but sadly, we had no room for it. We'll be back for sure, with more friends, as the menu is extensive, with portions generous at reasonable prices. Have a Memorable Christmas

Christmas is said to be the most magical time of the year, and the build-up to the day is o en more exciting than the actual day itself. Family, friends and of course, lots and lots of food await us. Fireyz shares some ways of making this Christmas a more memorable and upli ing one.

You can even take it a step further by putting some bird feed in your hand and sitting in your garden (if you have one). You never know, the birds may just swoop down and feed from your hand.

If you have children, chances are that they will be awake early anyway. Take in the majesty of the sun rising on this new day, the first beam of light setting a mystical atmosphere for this special day. good food and company, it would not hurt to stop and spare a thought for the less fortunate. Each day can be tough for them, with the festivities being doubly so. fortunate. And you do not need to limit this to just once a year. There is nothing to say that you can’t make it a regular thing.

Quality Time

It is Christmas afternoon, and hopefully, the family is all together, with time on your hands. You could disappear into your new books or video games but you could also

make this a special time by picking something to do together that you only do on Christmas. The whole family watching your favourite Christmas movie together? Playing a complete game of Monopoly or any other board game? Going for a walk together? There is just so much that can be done that will build lasting memories.

Write down memories of the year together in a blank book and read over last year’s memories. Take a yearly picture at a place that has significance. Make an album of these pictures, or in these days of technology, make a folder on your computer which can be shared with the whole family or friends. Take time out to talk to each other. Life passes by so quickly, and it is not often that you can get family and friends all together in one place. Talk, love, laugh, forgive. Embrace the true meaning of this day.

The Bullet Journal Method: Track Your Past, Order Your Present, Plan Your Future Ryder Carroll

Like many of us, Ryder Carroll tried everything to get organised – countless apps, systems, planners, you name it. Nothing really worked. Then he invented his own simple system that required only pen and paper, which he found both effective and calming. The system combines elements of a wishlist, a to-do list, and a diary. It makes it easy to get thoughts out of your head

By breaking long-term goals into small actionable steps, users map out an approachable path towards continual improvement, allowing them to stay focused despite the crush of incoming demands. The Duality of Life Artist Hidayat Arshad talks to Hannef Esquander about the coexisting elements in life which are the inspiration for his artwork.

H

AILING from Tampin in Negeri Sembilan, art has always been a part of Hidayat Arshad's life. From participating in his preschool's colouring contest to art competitions in high school, Hidayat went on to pursue a diploma followed by a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM).

Concept of Duality

Upon graduation in 2012, the young artist began to pursue his art seriously by participating in group exhibitions such as the 19º Show at Segaris Art Centre in Solaris @ Publika, Bi Lateral Bonds at Taksu Gallery, Art Expo Malaysia Plus at MATRADE, Young & New at HOM Art Trans in Ampang, G13 Project Room – Construction of Creativity at G13 Gallery, and U12 at Prima Gallery in Bangsar. “My latest achievement is the Silver Award (Emerging Artist Category) in the UOB Painting of the Year competition in October 2018. I am now based in U12 Shah Alam, and am making art at Studio Kongsi with my wife

Amy Nazira who is also an artist,” says Hidayat. Hidayat draws his inspiration and ideas from the concept of duality which exists in everyday life. Elements such as positive and negative, good and evil, black and white, as well as life and death, prove that duality can be viewed as a system of balance instead of being oppositional as two separate entities. “My previous works such as the Imaginary series is a summation of this idea whereby geometric elements are combined with organic elements in my own artistic process. The geometric elements represent calculation, and the sharp linear edges suggest a modern and urban identity,” he says. “As for the organic elements, it is a traditional approach to textural form which is created spontaneously. This

combination of geometric and organic is inspired by the urban environment of my current residence while remembering my rural hometown which is rich in natural resources,” Hidayat adds. He believes that every artist has a different way of thinking and a different approach to creating their art even if they share similar subjects, techniques and medium. Experience and the environment also makes a difference as artists have different exposure and experiences. The 27-year-old artist looks up to international artists such as Frank Stella, Josef Albers and Robert Indiana as well as Malaysian masters such as Sulaiman Esa, Ismail Zain and Zulkifli Yusoff for their excellent works and achievements.

Working with Acrylic

“At the moment, I have chosen acrylic as my main medium as it dries faster and works best in the layering of multiple colours. I do actually mix acrylic with other medium such as oil, texture paste and charcoal, particularly when I created the pieces for my Construction of Creativity exhibition. On top of that, I always try to explore different subjects such as plants and wordings as symbols to put across what I'm trying to convey,” says Hidayat. Being involved in the same industry with his wife has taught them to be more understanding of each other. He feels that this gives them the room to grow together in their careers as artists as they help each other towards achieving their dream of a brighter future. The artist feels that the

local arts scene has become livelier, thanks to the efforts of private institutions and government bodies. There are now many competitions being held and grants being offered for arts-related initiatives in Malaysia. Hidayat also believes that the public has become more aware and receptive to programmes and events focusing on art. Hidayat hopes to participate in more exhibitions and competitions, with the ambition of getting his works accepted around the world. “For now, I am focused on experimenting with different techniques at Studio Kongsi to make better quality artworks.” FireFlyz ~ 53

Shoes That Make You Fly Michael Jordan, arguably one of the most popular basketball players of our time, is known for his gravity-defying jumps, while Nike is a well-known shoe brand. Pair them and you get the Air Jordan. We take a look at five of the best retro Air Jordans that made us believe we could fly.

Jordan Retro 3

The Air Jordan 3 was originally released in 1988 and was the first Air Jordan to feature a transparent air unit on the heel, and was also the first model to feature the new Jumpman logo – a silhouette of Michael Jordan jumping mid-dunk. This logo replaced the wings logo from previous models. The Air 3 was apparently Jordan's favourite shoes and he wore them often, even during the 1988 Dunk Championship.

Jordan Retro 8

This model hit the market during the 1992-1993 NBA basketball season. The Air Jordan 8 was significantly heavier in weight than previous Air Jordans. The 8 was rich in detail. It had a ‘jumpman’ on each shoe and two crossover straps. The Jordan 8 was known as the ‘Punisher’ due to the ankle support, full air sole and polycarbonate shank plate, all of which went into making them one of the most well supported of the Jordan sneakers.

Jordan Retro 13

Released to the public in 1997, this model was best known for the special cushioning along the feet. Interestingly, the black panther was the inspiration for the shoe as the sole is similar to the pads of the panther's paw. It also featured a hologram at the back of the shoe which glowed like a panther's eye when light was shined on it. The 13 was worn in the Spike Lee movie He Got Game, making its popularity skyrocket.

Jordan Retro 4

Jordan 4 was produced in 1989 and was the first Jordan shoe to be released to the global market. They came in four colours: White/Grey, Black/Grey, White/Red, and White/Blue. Jordan 4 became famous when it was featured in the Spike Lee movie Do The Right Thing. Michael Jordan was wearing these shoes when he made the series winning basket known as “The Shot in the game between the Chicago Bulls and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Jordan Retro 5

Very similar to the Jordan 4, this version was released in 1990. Although similar in design to the 4, there were differences in terms of the look. It had lace locks, a reflective tongue and transparent rubber soles. The soles on this model, however, proved to be problematic, as they yellowed when they got wet. This flaw became the source of many customer complaints when they were released.

Fun Facts

Words & Photos: David Bowden

They Fight For Justice Comic book heroes are a big deal these days. Fireflyz shares some fun facts about the DC Universe that you may not know.

• Although Superman remains the

world's best-known superhero, Batman holds the title for most appearances.

• The Hellbat is a suit of armour

occasionally donned by Batman to handle large-scale threats in extreme battle scenarios. It was designed with input from each Justice League member and forged in the sun by Superman.

• Tim Burton listened to Prince's music

constantly whilst shooting Batman, and said the musician's songs had a major influence on the creation of the film's version of the Joker. Prince eventually wrote songs for the film but Burton reportedly hated them and only used them because he was contractually obliged to.

• Earth-23 is a planet in the DC

Multiverse that is almost solely inhabited by black versions of DC characters. Black Superman was based on Barack Obama whilst Wonder Woman was based on Beyoncé Knowles.

• David Bowie was considered for the

role of Joker in Tim Burton's 1989 Batman film. Although the role went to Jack Nicholson, a few Batman comic artists continue to base their drawings of the Joker on David Bowie.

• Hawkeye is the only character who is a member of the Justice League as well as the Avengers.

• In 1997, Marvel and DC came up with

a crossover comic special called Batman/ Captain America. In this comic, the Joker steals an atomic bomb after being hired

• In a 1997 issue of Superman, Clark Kent and Lois Lane attended a Halloween party dressed up as Batman and Robin respectively.

• Batman's willpower is so strong that

he is capable of operating a Green Lantern ring when necessary, something considered practically impossible for average individuals.

• The “DC” in “DC Comics” stands for the

original comic series “Detective Comics”, making DC Comics’ full name “Detective Comics Comics”.

• Aquaman's trident is an indestructible magical weapon that grants him great powers and the divine right to rule the

sea. With it, he can manipulate water (create tidal waves or whirlpools), control the weather, disperse energy in the form of bolts and force fields, or just use it to stab his foes.

• In 1978, DC released a Superman comic, in which he teams up with Muhammad Ali to defeat an alien invasion.

• Aquaman's arch-enemy, the Black

Manta, only became a super villain because Aquaman didn't succeed in rescuing him after he was captured by pirates.

• DC once created a superhero called

Vibe. He was a breakdancer that danced for justice. He used his powers as a dancer to create sound waves. DC quickly found out that this was a bit lame as a character, and killed him off after a few episodes.

Coffee & Chat

He Is Inked

Musician. Game shop owner. Game designer. Writer. Fireflyz sits down with the multi-talented Francis Wolf to talk about his latest self-published book Kept In Ink. Why did you write this book? How personal was this book to you?

The book was written for very selfish reasons. I wanted to write and compile all the experiences I had during a trip to Thailand for me to process and articulate. I was fortunate that there was actually a story to guide the narrative. So the book pretty much wrote itself. Yes, it is personal to publish anything because you put yourself out there for people to discover and sometimes judge. Kept In Ink, while personal, was also something that I felt I wanted to share.

Your writing style has been described as 'raw'. What would you say to that?

I am not so sure what 'raw' means. If it means it's lean, mean and straight to the point, then I suppose it can be

called 'raw”. I tend not to beat around the bush, and I call it as I see it. This is only my fourth book, so there is ample time for me to become more refined, if need be.

This is your fourth book after Social Carbon Copy, Kelunding and Ebbi. All four have been selfpublished. Why?

I think the books that I want to do are different from the usual publishable fare. Publishers are wary when you try to produce something a little different from what traditionally sells. Kelunding, for example, is a photography book about written graffiti in the Klang Valley. Not exactly bestseller material, to be honest. Self-publishing gives me the freedom to pursue subjects that interest me, which are usually a little

different from the norm. It also gives me the freedom of expression that I need to complete my pieces. I also had the freedom to do my own cover art, illustrations, page design and overall production. The only thing I did not do was proofread and press the print button on the printer machine. That makes selfpublishing very satisfying.

How did you come up with the title of the book?

Kept In Ink is a book about Thai Traditional Tattoos which uses ink. The book is put together with ink and the illustrations done using different exercises in “inking” as an art form. The title totally encapsulates everything about the book. It all came together nicely.

Wolf has self-published all four of his books

Who are your favourite authors?

I don't have a favourite author, and the best books

I have read are usually ones that are not on the bestsellers list. This is why I love bookstores that allow me to browse an open copy. While it is true that bestsellers are bestsellers for a reason, I love books that do not get a chance but is a diamond waiting to be picked up.

Are you planning to publish another book? Yes, of course. I work on several but many never see the ink on paper. If there is something good to write about, then yes, you'll see another but I have actually deleted projects that are well past the 30,000-word mark. It's got to feel right before you ask someone to give you their hard-earned money for a read.

Kept In Ink is available at Lit Books, Silverfish Books, Gerakbudaya and other indie bookshops.

Health

Jab, Jab, Cross! There was a time when one would imagine a boxer training in a no-frills gym, sweating and throwing powerful punches at a heavy bag. Today, there are many well-equipped gyms which offer boxing classes, open to people of different fitness levels. Fireflyz looks at the health benefits of this workout. Improved Cardiovascular Health

Boxing is an effective cardio workout that keeps your heart working at maximum efficiency. It puts a moderate amount of stress on your heart and lungs to push them to work harder, burning calories and enhancing your blood circulation. Boxing can be a fun alternative to your usual cardio workout.

Intense Core Workout

Boxing helps strengthen core muscles and pushes your body beyond its perceived limitations. It flattens your stomach and helps strengthen your abdominal muscles while working your hip muscles at the same time. If your workout is coupled with functional exercises, you will get double the benefits. Because of this, boxing is considered more effective than other workout sessions that train your abdominal muscles in isolation.

Improved Motor & Neurological Functions

One of the downsides of aging is that we start to experience a loss of balance and coordination. Boxing can help with body and eye coordination as it promotes faster reflexes. As you deepen your practice, you will be able to act faster and move quickly to avoid being hit by your opponent. Even if you are just hitting

a heavy bag, the bag moves on impact, and improved hand-eye coordination will help you land your punches.

channel this inner energy into something more beneficial and productive.

Effective Stress Reliever

As boxing is high intensity training, you have the additional benefit of burning stubborn fat and shedding excess calories. Just a few minutes of boxing will burn more calories than other exercise programmes, making it a terrific way to lose weight without having to spend too much time on exercise.

Stress is all around us, and more often than not, we encounter stressful situations on a regular basis. Boxing can be a great workout and stress reliever as it helps in the release of endorphins that boost your mood and make you feel happier. This may also result in increased productivity. At the same time, boxing moves – such as punching a boxing bag – can help release negative energy or pent-up emotions. In this way, you can

Lose Weight

Toned Muscles

If you want to gain toned muscles without adding too much bulk, boxing is

the perfect exercise for you. Unlike weight lifting which adds more bulk to your body, boxing helps build muscle and tones it as well so you can achieve a lean physique which facilitates quicker movement.

Fortifies Bones

Boxing increases the strength and density of your bones. Resistance training in any form including boxing, fortifies your bones and helps protect them from injury and delay any tendencies towards osteoporosis as you grow older. The increase in bone density as well as muscle is maintained as you continue to box regularly.

Meditation in Motion Tai Chi involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner accompanied by deep breathing, and helps to promote serenity through its gentle, owing moves. Fireyz breathes deep and looks at the beneďŹ ts of practising this art. Balance

Tai Chi movements are steady and slow, shifting from one side to the other with coordinated upper body movements. These movements help the core to regain balance and reduces the risk of falling among the elderly.

Strength & Endurance

Tai Chi has proven to be an exercise with significant benefits for balance, upper and lower body muscular strength and endurance, as well as upper and lower body flexibility, particularly in older adults. Research has shown that individuals who practise Tai Chi at least three times a week have higher strength levels.

Flexibility

In Tai Chi, the range of movements performed goes a long way to improve one's flexibility. Increased flexibility rids your body of muscle imbalances and reduces the chances of

injuries during physical activity. When your muscles are less tense, you will experience fewer aches and pains. Plus, you are less likely to experience muscle cramps.

way in helping with the management of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, digestive disorders and depression.

Aerobic Capacity

Tai Chi is a gentle art which makes it ideal for people of different ages and physical conditioning. As it is so gentle, there is no risk of injury to the body unlike some other forms of exercise. In fact, many prominent teachers had begun teaching Tai Chi late in life.

Aerobic capacity diminishes with age but research on traditional forms of aerobic exercises has shown that it can improve with regular training. Further research on the effects of Tai Chi on aerobic capacity in adults with an average age of 55 years, showed that those who practised Tai Chi regularly for a year had a higher aerobic capacity than sedentary individuals around the same age.

Chronic Illness Prevention

Practising Tai Chi on a regular basis can go a long

For All Ages

Regulates the Respiratory System

Breathing is one of the three aspects of Tai Chi. Deep breathing helps treat respiratory alignments such as asthma, bronchitis and emphysema.

Stress Relief

The breathing exercises, movement and mental concentration required of individuals who practise Tai Chi offer a perfect break from their hectic lifestyles. The mindbody connection is important here as it has been reported that breathing combined with body movements and handeye coordination promotes calmness.

Internal Organ Health

The fluid spiraling and bending movements of Tai Chi as well as its breathing and meditation components massage the internal organs, and release them from the damaging constrictions brought about by stress, poor posture and difficult working conditions. It also aids the exchange of gases in the lungs and helps the digestive system to work better. FireFlyz ~ 59

Personality

Be the Change

You Wish to See

Social advocate Syed Azmi Alhabshi tells Hannef Esquander how he is creating changes in society one step at a time.

S

YED Azmi Alhabshi is known to many on social media for his work as a Non-Governmental Individual (NGI). He is currently the Chairman of Pelindung Kanak-Kanak Wilayah Persekutuan (Child Protection Federal Territory), and Patron of the Transit Home for Pregnant Teenage Girls called Rumah Kita. He is working hard to promote kindness and change at a personal level, encouraging people to help those in need within their community.

How did it all begin for you?

I have to admit that it was for a selfish reason. I was working in Muar at that time while my parents were living in Damansara, Kuala Lumpur. If something were to happen to my parents, they are fortunate to be able to depend on our neighbours for help. It dawned on me that most neighbours, however, do not interact with or even know each other. I decided to go knocking on doors, and managed to get the neighbours to meet and interact with each other. I then took it one step further and got the community to focus on caring for the elderly. That was the beginning.

There have been times when you have been embroiled in controversies. How do you handle that?

I wish I have a manual for this, or perhaps, I should put out one myself. It mostly stemmed from misunderstandings, or the use of certain words or narratives that led people to misconstrue what I had said. We handled the ‘I Want to Touch a Dog’ debacle by looking at our strengths. At that time, it was all about being patient

and not having knee-jerk reactions. Listening to the different points of view helped us to become stronger in managing controversies.

What keeps you going despite the obstacles?

I am known for my work with children, and my strength comes from them. It becomes a natural habit or part of life like driving a car. You keep getting better at it, and you enjoy doing it even more. Seeing all the happy faces, getting more people involved, and knowing the value of the knowledge that is about to be shared keeps me going. No one is perfect, and we are trying our best in the things that we do. It is the self-realisation that makes it more interesting to see what's next. That, for me is worth living and fighting for.

What is the one thing that you hope to change in our society?

I wish to change our society's ability to observe and listen, and to not judge quickly. I don't want them to change their mindset because it will be like changing their own beliefs. I wish that our society would understand that if something didn't happen to them, it doesn't give them the right to judge others. Not judging is something that I have learned throughout my journey. I have been judged harshly in the past, so I understand how that feels.

What is a typical day for you?

I usually check my phone early in the morning for messages, emails and my agenda for the day. I always have a late breakfast before going out to meetings. I spend the later part of the afternoon with

the community with whom I'm working, before heading out to more meetings. I make sure that I go to my parents’ place if I have the time before heading home and reflecting on the day. I just wish I could have healthy regular meals, more time to exercise and to be able to lock my door for some ‘me time’.

Would you agree that Malaysians are generally kind and giving, and go out of their way to help others?

Yes. We are very kind and generous. Malaysia is a land of opportunity, and people are now more aware about being kind. They create their own groups to help, not just with money but also with time, energy, prayers, knowledge and advice.

What are you working on now?

My current job is the protection of children. I work with agencies which deal with child trafficking. I am also passionate about the work I am doing to help the elderly.

What would you say to people who look up to you and want to make things better for all of us in this country?

When people come up to me, the simplest thing for me to say is ‘thank you’. It is better if I say it fast because I usually get embarrassed. I don't think everything is perfect yet, and I don't think I deserve the recognition. The reason I share what I do is to inspire people to do the same in their own communities. Honestly, I just want people to know that I'm no different from them. If I can do it, they can do it too. FireFlyz ~ 61

Maxus G10 SE: Not What You Think

Calling this a ‘car’ feels like such an understatement; a ‘cavern’ is a closer description. The Maxus marque is derived from the British-based LDV Group’s Maxus van a er China’s SAIC, an automaker known for its collaboration with GM and Volkswagen, bought over its intellectual property.

As a people mover, the G10 SE needs to be practical. With a 2-3-2-3 seat layout, the G10 SE puts the more comfortable

The Looks

Throw out your perceptions about vehicles from China being outdated. They have improved, and where they are lacking, they seek assistance, as in the case of the G10 SE which is styled by the renowned Torino Design of Italy. It may be boxy in design but there is nothing significant to dislike. HID xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights and tail lights, and a body kit that makes it look less utilitarian. There is no hiding its large dimensions, dwarfed only by a minibus, which could make parking or driving out of a junction daunting. Thankfully, there is an 62 ~ FireFlyz

captain seats in the third row to allow walk-through access to the fourth. All rows, except for the last, slide to allow for adjustment of legroom. The backrest of the last row is a 60:40 split fold but the bench is a one-piece design. Further, having all the seats up means there is hardly any space for cargo. But it is a different story if you rarely carry more than seven. For smaller items, there are plenty of cubbies throughout the van, some large enough to house a 1.5-litre bottle. The seats are fairly comfortable and dressed in leather of decent quality, with the same two-tone scheme as the dashboard and doors. There are dedicated cooling vents for every row, with central rear control as well as a panoramic glass roof. The first row gets a sunroof. A drop-down screen provides entertainment for the passengers. At the rear of the front centre console is a three-pin 220V power outlet allowing you to hook up your laptop. Dominating the dashboard is a large 15-inch display which is split between a

digital clock display and a touchscreen interface. Faux wood accent on the dashboard is used to dress up an already decent, though not luxurious, interior.

The Drivetrain

Unlike its immediate rival, the G10 SE is powered by a 2-litre petrol engine albeit a turbocharged one. This engine puts out 225 hp and 345 Nm through the six-speed automatic from ZF (which also supplies to BMW) to the rear wheels which allows it to carry loads more effectively.

The Features

Sedans in this price range will trump it anytime in terms of power delivery and comfort but to carry as many passengers, you will need to buy two of those sedans. Like most things, there is a downside. While using a smaller capacity turbocharged engine bodes well for road tax payments, it does not do as well in power delivery or fuel consumption. It does not have the peppy low-range push of a turbo diesel rival and needs to be actively urged. But once you get it up to speed, power in the mid-range is quite decent. At higher engine speeds, it can sound a bit rough but learn to work the throttle and you can actually

There is a range of convenient features such as powered sliding rear doors, keyless entry and start, cruise control, multi-function steering wheel, auto headlights, and storage under the front seats. In terms of safety, there is an electronic stability programme, traction control, anti-lock braking system, electronic brake-force distribution, tyre pressure monitor, ISOFIX points and two airbags.

Conclusion

The G10 SE is an interesting proposition, especially if you need a 10-seater on a budget and do not like diesel power. Although there are some compromises, the practicality and decent build quality cannot be denied.

The Drive

The other upside to rearwheel drive is the smaller turning circle that the G10 SE is able to make. So, even though this is a long van, it is able to take tight corners and U-turns like a hatchback, with the caveat that it doesn't handle like a hatch due to its tall body. Nonetheless, it provides a stable ride even if it is lacking in premium refinement, which is not unexpected; uneven roads do not get too uncomfortable for the passengers of the G10 SE. FireFlyz ~ 63

Tunes

Serious Talent Formed in 2011 by schoolmates, Volatile is a rock band made up of young musicians from the Malaysian island of Penang. The band released its debut album Taking Flight in early 2015, and has not looked back since. Its latest album, It’s About Art, was three years in the making. Fireflyz chats with Raul Dhillon to find out more. How was the band formed?

Volatile was formed by guitarist Jaime and her cousin Antoine seven years ago in school. At that time, they were learning to play their respective instruments and listening to a lot of music. They soon found themselves watching bands playing gigs and concerts, and that was it – they knew they wanted a band of their own. After poaching vocalist and lyrical maestro Sean Choon from his band in school, and with bassist Yeap Wei Wen, the quartet was

ready to fly. Over the years, the line-up changed several times but what brought the current six of us together, I believe, is no different from how the band started; a shared love and respect for the art, for each other, and an unyielding desire to create and present something that is both thought-provoking and musical.

Why the name ‘Volatile’?

Quite the funny story, this one. Jaime and Antoine were attending a wedding way back when. They got bored, and went outside and sat on a fence (the groom didn't go with them, thankfully), and spotted a safety sign that read ‘Caution, extremely volatile’. Needless to say, the name was adopted soon after.

Talk us through your journey.

Well, it has been quite the experience thus far, from all of us back in school, then college, and some later moving on to university and jobs, but still making the time to come together in the name of music. We played at family events and

birthdays, small neighbourhood pubs and went on to festivals, Singapore and soon, India and beyond. We have learned so much from these gigs, big and small, and are extremely thankful for all the warm smiles and helping hands along the way. We believe it to be of paramount importance to never forget each step of the journey and to hold them close, learn from them, and stay true to ourselves and stay firmly grounded.

How would you describe your music?

What are some of the challenges the band has faced?

How would you describe the music scene in Malaysia right now?

I think the biggest set of challenges for us came during the recording and production process of our latest album It's About Art. It was especially tough for us as we are all based in Penang, and recording meant going to Kuala Lumpur very frequently for tracking. Travelling and finding days where we could go to KL was a headache at times. Thankfully, our engineer, Ashwin of Nadir Studios, graciously hosted us on multiple occasions.

This is an especially tough one that we get asked pretty often. It's rather interesting as we have very different musical tastes. Different ideas get thrown into the vat when we are brewing up a new tune. The music is constantly evolving but right now, I would say it's somewhere between the fluid harmonies of Toto, grandeur of Meat Loaf and Styx's theatrical arena rock.

I believe it has never been easier or cheaper for aspiring artists to get out there and make themselves known. Basic audio interfaces and mics have never been cheaper, and with the Internet and YouTube around, getting started by yourself at home is a breeze! It is a great feeling to see so many Malaysians from vastly different backgrounds writing original music and seeing them gain traction.

What is on the horizon for the band?

Now that we've launched our second album, we're hoping to sell out the O2 Arena and live on an island in the Bahamas! Hahaha. On a serious note, we have a couple of new tunes in the oven at the moment. We will also be working on a live video recording of a few of our songs and a couple of covers in KL this December. We are also going to be playing at the Saraang Music Festival in India in January 2019.

Any wise words for up-andcoming bands?

Don't abandon what makes you human, ever. Stay grounded and humble, and keep an open mind. Be kind to people, inspire others, share your knowledge and know-how. Care for yourself, your health and your relationships. facebook.com/Band.Volatile

Impromptu What sort of skills and knowledge are needed for your position? A strong foundation in subjects such as Maths, Science and English is recommended. You should also love to travel, and not have a fear of heights.

What were you doing prior to being appointed as a TRI/ Captain in Firefly? I was flying for Transmile Air Services as a cargo pilot. I have flown the B737-200 aircraft, as well as the MD11, before the fleet was laid off.

What is a typical day for you?

I usually come in an hour before airborne time to check on the status of the aircraft, weather forecast and passenger load. Once I've gotten all the information, I order fuel for the flight before briefing my co-pilot and cabin crew, after which we are ready to take flight.

What do you like the most about your job?

Being able to fly all passengers safely and on time to their destination.

What is the most challenging part of your job?

As TRI / Captain teaching new cadets to pilot the ATR 72-500 aircraft, I have to think of different ways to deliver lessons efficiently. Aircraft system knowledge, decision-making and how to handle the aircraft safely are just some of the lessons I have to impart to new cadets. Another challenge involves flying the aircraft, as daily flight scenarios vary in terms of weather, aircraft status, passengers and air traffic control. We have to consider all of these so that the operations can go smoothly.

If you were not the TRI / Captain for Firefly, what would you be?

Have you travelled to any Firefly destinations? Do share with us one of your memorable travel experiences either with friends or family.

Do you have any parting words of wisdom to share with those who wish to be a pilot?

Animal Kingdom

Cuteness Overload The rusty spo ed cat is one of the smallest cat species in the world, being roughly half the size of a domestic cat. Though it is the size of this animal that makes it very unique, Fireyz shares a few other interesting facts about this adorable animal. It Is The Smallest Cat In Asia

It is not the smallest cat in the world but it does have the title of the smallest cat in Asia, which is where is it predominantly found. Even the largest of these cats only reach 19 inches in length and will not weigh more than 3.5 pounds. When it is almost fully grown, it would fit easily in the palm of an adult hand. While they are cute, it must be remembered that these are wild cats and are not suitable to be kept as pets. Chances are that one will only see this cat in the zoo as they are elusive in the wild.

They Are Found In Sri Lanka And India

There are two subspecies of the rusty spotted cat, one which is found in Sri Lanka and the other in India. In Sri Lanka, they tend to live in the mountain forests of the country. In India, they are more likely to live in shrubland and grasslands. They prefer areas with dense undergrowth that are also rocky and, as a result, do not tend to live in evergreen

forests. There have not been many confirmed sightings in both countries, though some people have managed to snap a photo.

difficult to get a wild rusty spotted cat to trust you even if you see it on a regular basis. Their first instinct is to attack strangers.

A Litter Of One To Three Kittens

It Sleeps During The Day

Their mating season is brief and this may be due to the fact that females are more vulnerable to attack during this period. They can have a litter of up to three kittens, but it is most common for them to only have one kitten during each pregnancy. The gestation period is just over two months. The kittens will stay with their mother until they are old enough to take care of themselves. As with most other species of animals, they are considered to be adults when they reach sexual maturity.

It Is Very Shy

One of the main reasons why not much is known about the cat is that it keeps its distance from humans. It may live near them, but will often not show itself when there are a lot of people about. It is very

The rusty spotted cat is a nocturnal animal and will hunt for food at night. It sleeps during the day and often, under cover. This may be in a hollow log or underneath dense vegetation. There may be some periods of activity during the day but these will be brief. The fact that it is nocturnal makes it easier to hunt for prey as it can make its attack when the prey is asleep.

They Like Their Meat

Their main source of food is small rodents. It has also been known to eat frogs and small lizards. It stalks and pounces on its prey in the same way that a domestic cat would hunt a rat or mouse. It is very stealthy, and though prepared to kill their prey themselves, the cat has been known to occasionally eat the carcass of a prey.

Reflections

Dealing with Stress Stress is part of life no ma er who or where you are. The key is ge ing it under control. Fireflyz shares some tips to help you stay calm. Get Moving

Do something each day to be active — walk, hike, play a sport, go for a run, do yoga or strength training. It does not have to be gruelling to reduce stress. Just move, and have fun doing it.

Simplify Your Schedule

A hectic schedule can be a major cause of stress. Simplify by reducing the number of commitments in your life to just the essential ones. Learn to say no to the rest – and gradually get out of commitments that aren't beneficial to you. Schedule only a few important things each day, and leave

breathing space between them. Get out of meetings that are not absolutely essential. Leave room for downtime and fun.

One Thing At A Time

This is one of the easiest ways to reduce stress, and it is something that you can start today. Right now. Focus as much as possible on doing one thing at a time. Clear your desk of distractions. Pick something to work on. Need to write a report? Do only that. Remove distractions such as phone and email notifications while you're working on that report. If you are going to clear your emails, do only that. This takes practice, and you will get urges to do other things. Keep practising and you will get better at it.

Develop One Healthy Habit Each Month

While getting active is great, developing other healthy habits will also go a long way in helping you feel less stressed. The

healthier you are, the likelier your stress level will decrease. Drink water instead of fizzy drinks. Stop smoking. Eat more vegetables and fruits. Eat at home as much as possible.

Do Something That Calms You

Some people are calmed by housework or working in the garden. Some people like to meditate, or take long walks. There is no set template for this. Find your calming activity and try to do it each day.

Get Creative

Throwing yourself into a creative activity is another great way to destress, and to prevent stress. If you like writing, start a blog or write a book. Others may like to paint, play music or sketch. Find that one thing that taps into your creative side and see where it takes you.

Be Prompt

Finding yourself running late can be very stressful. Try leaving the house earlier by getting ready earlier, or scheduling more time between meetings. Things always take longer than expected, so schedule buffer time to get ready, commute or run errands before you need to be somewhere.
