Travel Destinations You Don’t Want To Miss With spring in full swing, now is the time to plan your next adventure. Go off the beaten path and on the trekking routes of Patagonia, Chile, known for its incredible natural beauty, or explore Europe’s hidden gems in Slovenia, where spectacular mountain scenery, forests and lakes await. In Peru, avoid the crowds for the less explored regions of Northern Peru, such as the pre-Inca hilltop ruins of Kuelap. The enchanting southern states of Georgia and South Carolina in the United States, as well as chimpanzee and monkey trekking in Rwanda, are also on the list.

Exotic Food Some of the food that are part of our culture might seem exotic or downright odd to our foreign friends, and vice versa. From rotten cheese crawling with maggots to fried arachnids and potentially lethal sashimi, we list some of the ‘exotic’ foods enjoyed by people in different parts of the world.

GoT Locations HBO’s Game of Thrones is more than a TV series. It’s a cultural phenomenon. With fans gearing up for the much-anticipated season finale, we look at a few locations where its gorgeous scenes were filmed and that you can actually visit.

FROM THE COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF

Dear Guests, It is my pleasure to welcome you onboard. Malaysia as a country has so much to offer. From its pristine beaches to delicious cuisines, there’s so much to discover about the country and its colourful culture. With its multi-ethnic population living alongside each other, one of the most endearing aspects of Malaysia is the experience of warmth and hospitality that is always on hand. Being the national airline of the country, Malaysia Airlines represents the warmth, humility and hospitality that Malaysia is famous for overseas. Our diversity, heritage and culture are our reference and the roots of our brand promise. With this in mind, we have developed a new product to encourage our guests to make the most of their stopover in Malaysia. ‘Free Side Trip’ entitles passengers travelling from various regions to free domestic flights in Malaysia, simply to discover what the country has to offer.

goingplacesmagazine.com | 8 | April 2019

Whether the goal is to immerse in local culture, explore hidden gems or relax and unwind, guests can take advantage of the Free Side Trip deal and travel to Alor Setar, Kota Bharu, Kuantan, Kuala Terengganu or Johor Bahru. Visit our website to find out more. I am happy to share that Malaysia Airlines was recently accorded Best Airline in Asia Award by the International Council of Pacific Area Travel Writers Association (PATWA). A secret jury panel that comprised mystery travellers and members and officials of PATWA judged individuals and organisations that have excelled in promoting tourism across aviation, hotels, travel agencies, tour operators, destinations, government bodies and tourism ministries. The awards are now in their 18th year and have earned a reputation as one of the most coveted and sought-after awards in the travel industry.

Capt Izham Ismail

Group Chief Executive Officer Malaysia Airlines Berhad

On behalf of the airline, I am enormously proud and I dedicate the win to Malaysia Airlines’ employees who focus on delivering a world-class travel experience for our passengers every day. The award recognises the positive developments we have launched over the past two years, including new aircraft, products and digital innovations. It is testament to our commitment to offering passengers a fantastic experience both in the air and on the ground. I am confident 2019 will be a better year for us, and I have you, our guests, to thank for your continued support and faith towards the airline. You are the reason that has kept us flying high, and we truly hope that you have enjoyed our Malaysian Hospitality. I wish you a great journey with Malaysia Airlines always and a wonderful visit to or stopover in Malaysia. ■

interchangeable lenses, all of which might not be available on many smartphones. I’m of course just scratching the surface of the debate between camera phones and traditional cameras. Have you heard of Kimiko Nishimoto, the 90-year-old Japanese who picked up photography at the age of 72? Nishimoto takes quirky and comical self-portraits and has 214,000 followers on Instagram. While professional photographers have lamented the death of photography from the time the iPhone created photographers out of anyone, Nishimoto’s photos, which she snaps and edits herself, show that a conventional camera is still needed to create engaging and innovative images.

Our Photobook section this month features some photos from the third and final instalment of the Two Mountains photography project, an exchange programme mooted by Steven Lee, director of Kuala Lumpur International Photoawards, and Naoko Ohta, director of KLEE Inc PARIS TOKYO, to capture the communities that live under the shadow of the majestic Mount Kinabalu in Malaysia and Mount Fuji in Japan. Six photographers, three each from Malaysia and Japan, took part in the project. Turn to pages 44-51 to see the result of their work.

Julie Goh Editor

Six months ago, I bought a Sony a6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera because I thought I wanted to take better-quality photos. I’ve been using a smartphone to capture anything and everything, including some of the best moments of my life, and have not really been bothered by the lesser quality. Yes, I know a true photographer will tell you there is a vast difference between capturing with a proper camera and with a smartphone. But in the last six months, I have only used the camera twice, though I brought it along on my travels. It’s just not as convenient as snapping with a smartphone, which you almost always have in your hands. When you don’t make a living out of photography, the conventional camera will most likely not see much action. Which brings me to the question, do we need more than a smartphone camera when we are on holiday? I suppose it depends on the purpose of the photos. If they are simply to populate your Instagram account, then smartphones are convenient and connected, two qualities that regular cameras cannot match. But if you’re a serious photographer or one who makes a living out of the artform and therefore want great-quality photos, traditional cameras offer optical zoom, larger sensors, fast shutter speed, various shooting modes and

Letter Of The Month My wife and I always travel with Malaysia Airlines or with any of the oneworld partner airlines, whenever possible. The travels have been rewarding with Enrich miles fully redeemed for some of our trips. We enjoy the hospitality of Malaysia Airlines and recalled a flight where the entertainment audio output had noise distortion that could not be resolved, and the flight was full with no possibility to change seats. The cabin crew subsequently offered us a gift voucher for in-flight purchase, which we did not expect but were definitely delighted to receive. The Going Places magazine is also our favourite with the variety of topics, stories and information available for pleasure reading onboard. Just wanted to say thank you Malaysia Airlines for flying us the thousand miles; Going Places for accompanying us along the miles; and having us travelling with smiles. LEE HAN LIM, Melaka, Malaysia

Malaysia Airlines was an important part of my commuting life for three years when I was working in Kuala Lumpur. I had to make weekly trips back to Jakarta then. After my project in Malaysia ended in June 2018, I was still eager to fly with this airline. In December 2018, I made a short visit to Kuala Lumpur and was very impressed with the new Airbus A330-200 on the Kuala Lumpur to Jakarta route. The huge cabin size, advanced in-flight entertainment and good in-flight meals have really moved the airline to the next level. Thank you, Malaysia Airlines. Keep up the excellent service. I’ve always flown with Malaysia Airlines, but my recent flight from Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur (MH73) was the best ever. I flew on an A330, and the aircraft is bigger than the one previously used on the Jakarta-Kuala Lumpur route. With the 1-2-1 configuration, very good leg room, friendly cabin crew and delicious food, I thoroughly enjoyed my flight. I must also mention that when we arrived at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, one of the flight attendants said, “Thank you, Mr Rifki.” That was awesome! No other airline’s cabin crew has thanked me by name, even when I flew in Business Class. This is what Malaysian Hospitality is all about, a simple yet memorable act from the cabin crew. Thank you, Malaysia Airlines. I will always be a loyal member of you from Indonesia! RIFKI HAMDANI THAMRIN, Jakarta, Indonesia

Malaysia’s gastronomic paradise gets busy this April with the return of the Penang International Food Festival (PIFF), an annual event that highlights the best of the island’s street food and restaurant scene. Taking place on 13-28 April, this third edition of the annual festival is expected to draw over 400,000 visitors to various events across Penang, such as the Street Food Festival (13-14 April) on Lebuh Pantai, which gathers the best of Penang’s hawker fare; Taste of Penang (20-21 April) on Jalan Kelawai, which features Penang’s most popular cafés and restaurants on one street; and the Penang Seafood Galore (27-28 April), where Malaysia’s biggest outlet mall, Design Village, will host a feast for seafood lovers cooked up by dozens of chefs. Other pocket events include mini festivals, food walks, dining experiences and a food photography contest.

PS150, the once-discreet cocktail bar on Kuala Lumpur’s Petaling Street, is taking its cocktail-making expertise outside Malaysia through PS150 x YTL Hotels, a series of pop-up events in collaboration with YTL’s properties in Malaysia, Japan and the United Kingdom. Following appearances in The Majestic Malacca and Niseko Village, the pop-up bar is due to appear in Threadneedles Hotel, London on 7-8 May, and The Alchemy Bar at The Academy, London on 9 May. Each pop-up will feature speciality drinks and cocktails created by PS150, such as Malt & Juniper, a concoction made with sweet vermouth and dry spice syrup; the Salty Chinaman, a PS150 classic made with vodka, preserved orange, lime, lemonade and bitters; and Lychee No 3, the bar’s take on the lychee martini, made with gin, torch ginger and lime.

A Matcha Made In Heaven

AUSTRALIA

In Praise Of Adelaide

Niko Neko Matcha’s concept store in Bangsar’s Lorong Maarof is Kuala Lumpur’s new haven for green tea lovers. The calm and cosylooking space – complete with white walls, minimalist wood décor and an adorable white kitten in Niko The Odd – is the ideal spot to discover more about the local brand that specialises in high-grade artisanal Japanese matcha. Not sure where to start? Ask the store attendant to take you through the range of high-end to affordable matcha, or have one of the refreshing mocktails, like the Le Blanc Matcha Mocktail (green tea with Muscat white grape, lemon, sparkling water and thyme), the Pisang Hijau (a banana matcha latte made with peanut crumbs, adzuki sauce and kerepek pisang), or the Champagne Supernova, a sparkling cold-brewed houjicha drink. If you can spare the calories, have the matcha sourdough croissant or the signature Crunch Cubes (green tea fudge brownies coated with rice crispies).

Discover the gastronomic side of Adelaide at this 10-day food festival, which takes place on 5-14 April across the Australian city and its surrounding region. Start with the festival’s main hub in Adelaide’s Victoria Square, where you’ll find the region’s producers and winemakers showcasing their best products, while star-studded chefs like DOM’s Alex Atala, Quay Restaurant’s Peter Gilmore and Long Chim’s David Thompson prepare world-class meals at Glasshouse Kitchen. Ticketed events include A Taste of Arkaroola (5-14 April), which has you exploring the Arkaroola conservation reserve before having dinner at dusk; The Australian Native Bush Tucker (5 April), which takes you through a historical journey of Australian fare at the Tower Hotel in Magill; and A Taste of South Australia (12 April), where a three-course dinner cooked up by head chef Darren Greenwood awaits at The Promenade Restaurant.

Unclassified Madrid’s Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza presents a vast exhibition of work by French-Polish artist Balthasar Klossowski de Rola (19082001), known as Balthus. The painter, who often rejected contemporary painting trends and techniques, was known for forging his own style of modern art that later was coined ‘post-modernist’. The Balthus exhibition, which is open until the end of May, presents pieces from every stage of the artist’s long and prosperous career, which saw him experiment with 19th-century children’s book illustrations, surrealism, and the relationship between the figure and object, among other features. His unique style treads in between surrealism, modernism and classical art, and by evading classification, Balthus was both fiercely celebrated and reviled by his peers. He is considered one of the greatest artists of the 20th century and a true unique thinker. Art Awareness For The Love Of Animals Penang-born Malaysian artist Ethen Ng is participating in the spring edition of the Asia Contemporary Art Show as part of Hong Kong’s Art Week, alongside Art Basel and Art Central. He will be featuring some of his ballpoint on paper artwork depicting a variety of animals. From cats and dogs to owls and tigers, he aims for his work to gradually cultivate public awareness toward the protection of animals and to encourage unconditional love for them. “I am a pet lover. I dedicate my art to create awareness for animal protection and stand against animal cruelty,” he says. Ng started out as a fabric designer but eventually returned to his childhood love for fine art, especially painting. The artist uses ball pens in his work as “every single line and stroke (must be) planned carefully”, a process he thoroughly enjoys.

The Grand Palais in Paris serves as a magnificent venue for prestigious contemporary art fair Art Paris. Now in its 21st year, the fair continues to grow, this time presenting some 150 galleries and 45 monographic exhibitions that focus on the work of an individual artist. This year, Art Paris is working with AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions, which was founded by art historian Camille Morineau in 2014 to give women artists more representation. Art Paris has selected some 25 female artists working in France and presented their projects in four categories: abstraction, the feminist avant-garde, image and theatricality. As well as home-grown female talent, this year’s fair also showcases work from women artists in Latin America, with an extensive selection of work highlighting the ‘southern stars’ of this region.

Life Through A Lens Delve into the private collection of renowned Montreal photography enthusiast Jack Lazare with his exhibition Of Individuals and Places: Photographs from the Lazare Collection at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Lazare was bitten by the photography bug just 20 years ago and has been gathering images from well-known artists and anonymous photographers ever since. The exhibition presents a wide selection of imagery, with works from celebrated American documentary photographer Dorothea Lange, whose famous Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California photograph (above) is part of the show, and prints from British photographer Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-1879), as well as more contemporary works by Thomas Struth, among others. Lazare was thrilled to be able to share his enthusiasm with the public and inspire others to start their own collection, saying: “It has given me great pleasure to live with these images, and I’m delighted to be able to share them.”

British artist Phyllida Barlow has taken over the Gabrielle JungelsWinkler Galleries at the Royal Academy of Arts in London with a newly created range of site-specific, towering sculptures. Barlow uses raw materials such as cement, plaster, metals and cardboard to create large and often overwhelming installations. For cul-de-sac at the Royal Academy, she presents a collection that is exemplary of her style and approach to sculpture. “My relationship with making sculpture has to be adventurous, almost on the edge of being beyond my control,” she explains. “I find a work that’s bigger than myself can provide a very exciting adventure. There is the adventure of going into spaces with an object and a material that take your physical self beyond your physical self. MY GUIDE | Chongqing, China

Rugged & Beautiful

Chongqing, the gigantic industrial capital of Sichuan province, offers a slice of the real China, including one of its best cuisines. Words Charles Young | Illustration Maggie Li | Art Direction Euric Liew

cliffs and thunderous water flows, a landscape made famous as the subject of many Chinese classical paintings.

Historic City

goingplacesmagazine.com | 28 | April 2019

Although Chongqing is a modern city, and formal historical and religious sights are thin on the ground, the great-domed Three Gorges Museum is the best place to learn about the city’s threemillennium history, culture and environment, as well as the famous dam project. One old site that survived quite well is the Huguang Guildhall, which overlooks the river off the dockside Binjiang Lu. Built in 1759, it’s one of the city’s oldest surviving buildings and features a dozen or so highly decorated halls, atriums and ornate gateways, which now house a museum of Qing Dynasty trade. If you head downhill from here towards the river, you’ll also find one of the few remaining remnants of the old stone city wall.

Going Down The River The main reason tourists come to Chongqing is to take a cruise down the Yangtze River to visit the Three Gorges Dam. Most take three to five days to do the quicker downstream cruise from here to Yichang, passing through the wonderful and rugged scenery along the river, which affords the opportunity to visit many interesting temples and towns on the way. While much of the riverside cultural artefacts were lost with

Apr 2019_MY Guide.indd 28

the construction of the dam, you can still see ancient and intricate carvings 45 metres below the surface at the unique White Crane Ridge Underwater Museum at Fuling, as well as learn about the river’s flora and fauna. There is also a bustling traditional market nearby, where you can experience the noise and colour of local life.

that cling to a small mountain, dedicated to hell and the afterlife. As you trudge up hundreds of stairs to admire the fantastic views from the peak, you’ll pass through thick clouds of incense coming from temples decorated with colourful but grisly statues and paintings depicting the sufferings of those who get sent to hell.

At Fengdu is the famous Ghost City, a complex of 27 Taoist, Confucian and Buddhist monasteries, temples and shrines

After seeing the impressive Three Gorges Dam itself, visitors lastly head to the dramatic Xiling Gorge, known for its distinctive steep

During the Second World War, Chongqing served as China’s capital. It was where resistance to the Japanese was coordinated and the reason why few ancient buildings remain, due to the intense bombing it endured. The U.S. had its Chinese military headquarters here, and you can visit the well-preserved Former Residence of General Stilwell, the U.S. commander, which is now a museum of the war, as well as the Claire Chennault Museum, dedicated to the U.S. volunteer ‘Flying Tigers’ air squadron that was key in the defeat of the Japanese army.

where searching for mementos can be combined with a lovely dinner. Otherwise, head out to the ancient village of Ci Qi Kou, whose narrow, lantern-bedecked lanes feature traditional wooden buildings that house numerous souvenir stalls, restaurants and tea houses. Just a few kilometres west of the centre, it often features on day-tours of the city, thanks to its photogenic qualities. Famed since Ming times for its porcelain, it’s also a good place to buy naïvestyle Qijiang farmers’ prints and dark Chongqing lacquerware.

Perhaps the most interesting historical figure from these parts is Qin Liangyu, the 17th-century imperial general famous for defending the Ming Dynasty from the Manchurians and rebels alike. She was proficient in both poetry and warfare and was the only female general of Chinese dynastic times. You can see her armour and weapons, as well as learn about her life, at the museum dedicated to her in nearby Shizhu County.

Fiery Foods Chongqing is a city famous for food and the alleged birthplace of the modern hotpot, that most ubiquitous of Chinese dishes. A pot of boiling soup is placed at your table and the ingredients are brought on plates for you to dip in the liquid to cook yourself. Like most food here, Chongqing hotpot is extremely spicy, and if you can take the heat, try one of the traditional hotpot places on Wuyi Road. If those are a bit too earthy for you, head to Waipo Qiao in the swanky Metropolitan Tower Mall, where ingredients arrive at your table on little boats that flow through the restaurant on a water conveyor belt. It’s also a good place to try other famous Chongqing dishes, such as gan guo (a dry hotpot that is usually less spicy than the normal one), kung po chicken (a

Apr 2019_MY Guide.indd 29

spicy chicken dish with peanuts), mapo tofu (fermented tofu heavily spiced with Sichuan pepper) and suan cai yu (river fish in a sour soup). Chongqing is also famous for its street food, such as xiaomian (spicy noodle soup), or for cooling down in the summer, the cold noodle dishes liangmian and liangpi. In the centre, the best place for a whole range of food is the faux-Ming Hongya Dong complex on Cangbai Road in the north of the peninsula, which not only offers most types of Chongqing food but foreign restaurants and views across the river.

Day Trips There are several incredible tourist spots within a few hours’ drive, and tours can be arranged through your hotel. To the west of the city are the Dazu Rock Carvings, an extensive series of intricately carved Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian cave shrines made during the Tang Dynasty. Protected by its inaccessibility during the Cultural Revolution, this is the best-preserved example of rock carving in China and a World Heritage Site. In the southwestern suburbs of Chongqing, an example of living religion can be found at Huayan Temple. Situated within a well-

maintained park, it’s a tranquil spot and an easy escape from the bustle of the city. Built around a placid lake, this complex of red-painted temples, pagodas and pavilions also features a giant, golden statue of the Buddha surrounded by a field of lotus flowers. A working temple, it’s always busy with worshippers lighting incense and praying, as saffron-robed monks go about their routine, giving it a relaxed and contemplative air. To really get out into nature, hire a taxi and drive 140 kilometres southwest to Simian Mountain near Jiangjin City, one of the loveliest and yet little-visited forest parks in China. Located within the mountains between the Chaba and Feilong Rivers, the delightful wooded slopes are home to hundreds of plant and animal species, many endangered, with the rugged, wooded slopes punctuated by bubbling streams, lakes reflecting the blue sky, and more than a hundred waterfalls, the highest of which is 150 metres tall.

Shopping Besides the usual international brands found in the pedestrian Jiefangbei area at the heart of the city, there are a couple of good places for shopping for souvenirs. The Hongya Dong complex features a mass of night stalls,

While the city has its share of international luxury hotels such as Westin, Marriott and Sheraton on the main peninsula, many foreigners choose to stay in one of the hot spring resorts that can be found in and around the city. Inside the city, the most central is Rong Hui Hot Spring City, though there are dozens located in peaceful scenic areas farther outside, such as the luxurious Banyan Tree Chongqing Beibei at the foot of Qingyun Mountain. ■

Travel Tips: • English-language website chongqing-guide.com lists the latest travel information as well as foreigner-friendly eating and drinking places. If you have Wechat (Weixin), search for ChongqingExpatGuide. • Due to the hilly nature of the city and its traffic congestion, roads are best avoided for short hops within the city centre. It’s usually quicker to walk. • Chongqing boasts a rapidly expanding metro system, and Line 3 connects the airport with both Chongqing North Railway Station and the Longtousi Intercity Bus Station. • Chongqing has a very moist climate with mild, damp winters and extremely hot, humid summers, so the best times to visit are March to June and September to November.

Talking

Films Audiences and appetites for Singaporean cinema have grown, but a strong pool of talent with the right training is needed to stay the course, says filmmaker Wee Li Lin. Interview Julie Goh Photography courtesy of Singapore Tourism Board

When you think of Singaporean films, you’re likely to recall major hits like Ah Boys To Men and Army Daze. But look deeper and you’ll find a rich pool of talented filmmakers who are raising the profile of the Singaporean film scene on local and international levels. Among them is Wee Li Lin, an established filmmaker with several short and feature films under her belt, including Norman In The Air (1997), Gone Shopping (2007) and Autograph Book (2015), which was the first-ever Singaporean film selected for the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival in New York. She also received the honorary award at the Singapore Short Film Awards in 2011 for her outstanding contribution to Singapore’s short film scene.

What led you to become a filmmaker?

I always knew I wanted to do something creative – painting, photography and writing. When I took an experimental film class in university, I realised filmmaking captured all my interests, and I enjoyed bringing characters that I felt for to life. Eventually I was drawn into narrative filmmaking and not so much experimental film that my uni was known for. I did a semester at NYU Tisch in this programme called ‘Sight and

1

Sound’ and that experience really cemented my commitment to filmmaking and I decided I was going to pursue this wholeheartedly. What stories do you want to see more of coming out from local filmmakers?

It would be exciting to see more female-driven stories being told and films about the female gaze. I would also like to see more Singapore content in ‘Singlish’ and in mixed languages

2

Her latest effort saw her work with Viddsee to conceptualise five connected short films for the Singapore Tourism Board’s campaign to woo travellers who enjoy being immersed in arts. The short films were then directed by Li Lin (Interwoven), Sabrina Poon (In Generations To Come), Sun Ji (Alone Not Alone), Tariq Mansor (Walls) and Don Aravind (2002) – all Singaporean filmmakers.

Having witnessed the local filmmaking scene develop since your first film in 1997, how have attitudes and the approach of local filmmakers towards the stories they tell changed over the years?

It hasn’t changed in the sense that there are two camps. On one hand are the commercial films that are driven by a certain elusive formula that everyone is hoping to find. On the other hand, you have films that are very indie and seek to stir controversy. Both camps have been growing because there is now more funding, awareness and support for Singapore filmmakers. But there is some middle ground that’s been missing for a while – the kind of narrative indie films that aren’t geared towards the festival circuit but don’t fall into commercial stereotypes either. Maybe television is that middle ground, but because of existing conservative thoughts

3

within the TV industry and the self-censorship that we impose, there needs to be more depth and leeway for the way the characters communicate in Singapore. But there are encouraging things happening now. Over the years, we’ve seen more films coming out from female filmmakers and Malay and Indian filmmakers telling their stories in another language; they really shine and provide more representation. And also, audiences and appetites have grown for Singaporean cinema – and that’s helped by a number of films creating a big impact internationally. That’s an incredibly encouraging achievement that our city-state can be proud of. What would you like to see happen in the local industry in the next five to 10 years?

I would like to see growth in the acting industry

THE PROJECTOR The Projector revives two cinema halls and the fifth-floor foyer of the Golden Theatre, a historical landmark known for being the biggest cinema (1,500 seats) in Singapore and Malaysia when it was completed in 1973. – more classes, courses and even degrees solely focused on acting for film and TV should be made available; we have that rigour for acting in theatre, but not for film and TV. We can’t really have an industry without a strong pool of actors with the right training – that would be something vital over the next 10 years if we want the local film industry to thrive. What is the inspiration behind Interwoven?

I wanted to tell a story of an everyday person, who has everyday responsibilities, who felt boxed in a role. In Interwoven, the character Noor is an ‘auntie’ who is a mom and shop owner, who wants to be recognised as a creative person. Through the encounters Noor has with culture shapers like Santha Bhaskar, Ivan Heng and Zul Othman, she begins to gain confidence and inspiration to embrace her wholeness, which is that she can be a mother, a shop owner and an artist. The film is about courage, passion and family.

goingplacesmagazine.com | 31 | April 2019

as I feel like our native tongue is eclectic and unique. I would encourage filmmakers to have courage to say what you need to say and resist the urge to self-censor.

What are the values or messages that you hope to send to viewers through your films?

I’ve always been interested in characters who are trying to find their place in society, and making films that expose a dark or bright side of humanity. One such inspiration is Mike Leigh’s Happy Go Lucky, which was a nuanced, funny, and heartfelt film. If I could aspire to some of that, I’d be pretty pleased. For someone who isn’t familiar with works by Singaporean filmmakers, what are the must-watch films or shorts that you’d recommend them to watch?

I’d recommend Ah Ma by Anthony Chen, Hock Hiap Leong by Royston Tan, Moveable Feast by Sandi Tan, Jasmine Ng and Kelvin Tong, CA$H by Tan Wei Ting, I Believe by Leroy Lim, All The Lines Flow Out by Charles Lim Yi Yong, Sink by Kirsten Tan, and You Idiot by Kris Ong. I would recommend my own short, Areola Borealis, which is based on the true story of how I loaned my bra to my friend on the night of her wedding dinner. The film talks about race, repression and love. ■

3 Promising exotic spices, Kerala has attracted travellers and traders from all over the world for centuries. The lucrative spice trade first brought Chinese and Arabian traders to the Malabar Coast, and then the Portuguese, Dutch and British. Nowhere else in India showcases such an enchanting cultural melting pot as Fort Kochi with its Chinese fishing nets, historic synagogue, mosques, temples and crumbling Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial-era houses and churches. Serene Kerala feels a world away from the rest of India. Kochi, formerly known as Cochin, is a large, modern Indian city that is a lot cleaner and less hectic than cities like Delhi and Mumbai. Most visitors make a beeline across the water to Fort Kochi. Although the 16th-century fort is no longer there, this is still the most atmospheric and interesting part to explore, where most of the sights, cafés and shops are located, along with some fabulous heritage hotels and homestays.

The giant Chinese fishing nets on the shore at the tip of Fort Kochi are the iconic emblems of Kochi and are at their most photogenic at sunset. These impressive, spider-like cantilever contraptions are a legacy from Chinese traders. They date back to about 1400 and require at least four people to operate. Even though modern fishing methods have made these nets mostly redundant, you can still see them in operation and even try them yourself (for a small tip). Fort Kochi was the first European township in India, so take a look at the impressive Santa Cruz Basilica and St Francis Church. Dating back to 1503, St Francis Church is India’s oldest European church and was once the resting place of famous Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama.

One of Fort Kochi’s biggest delights is simply wandering and exploring the old streets, the synagogue, colourful houses, arty shops and cafés in Jew Town and Mattancherry. The small but beautiful 450-year-old Pardesi Jewish synagogue features exquisite chandeliers and tiling as well as a small but interesting exhibition of paintings describing the role the Jews played in Kochi. The synagogue is right in the middle of Jew Town and the bustling old port area. It’s a fascinating area to stroll around and shop for souvenirs as many old spice warehouses are now shops and cafés selling spices, tea, antiques, colourful shawls and handicrafts.

was presented as a goodwill gift from the Portuguese in 1555 to the Raja (King) of Cochin, probably to sweeten up trading privileges. The wooden palace’s exhibits help bring to life the multicultural history of Kochi; the highlight is the intricate and well-preserved Hindu murals depicting the famous epic of the Ramayana. To learn more about Kerala’s history, take a hairraising rickshaw ride to the outskirts of modern Kochi city and visit the impressive Kerala Folklore Museum. This towering, traditional-style wooden Keralan Palace is home to a dizzying array of Keralan antiquities and artefacts; it also hosts performances upstairs. Evenings in Fort Kochi are low-key and a great time to take in Kerala’s traditional cuisine and dance. Kerala’s famous traditional dance form, Kathakali, dates to the 17th century and is as enchanting as it is unique. The colourful, elaborate makeup and costumes and subtle yet incredible facial expressions provide a fascinating experience. It’s wise to opt for a performance specially put on for tourists as traditionally

Fort Kochi’s shores are a nice spot for a sunset stroll and people-watching with a backdrop of the fishing nets, but for a beach day, take the short ferry journey to Vypeen Island to relax on its sandy stretch of beaches and to visit Pallippuram Fort. Built in 1503 by the Portuguese, this is the oldest existing European fort in India. Kochi makes a great jumping-off point for exploring the rest of Kerala. One thing you absolutely can’t miss is the Kerala backwaters, a system of canals and lagoons stretching 900 kilometres across Kerala, lined by palm trees of a thousand shades of emerald, paddy fields and colourful houses. The backwaters are within easy reach of Kochi and make a wonderful day trip. Thatched barges called kettuvallams used to carry spices toward ports on the Arabian

sea; nowadays, most kettuvallams have been transformed into luxurious houseboats. Cruising along these languid backwaters is one of the most relaxing experiences in the whole of India and offers the chance to witness a way of life that seems unchanged for centuries. Traditional Keralan cuisine bursts with flavour due to the generous use of coconut, chilli, spices and fresh seafood. Influences from European and Arabic traders also mean there are more meat dishes available here than in many other parts of India. Fusion dishes are popular too. You can also try your hand at mastering the cuisine yourself at one of the many cooking classes in Fort Kochi.

For super-fresh seafood, stroll along the shore front by the fishing nets and take your pick from the day’s catch. Simply take your purchases to one of the simple street restaurants nearby on Tower Road, where they will cook and serve it for you. For the luxe experience, try the Rice Boat, a stationary kettuvalam boat restaurant at the Taj Malabar Resort. Juicy seafood with a spicy, coconutty twist and glorious views over the water make this the best fine-dining seafood restaurant in Kochi. Also don’t miss sampling a traditional Keralan thali, also called a sadhya (meaning banquet), a tasty mixture of curries, rice, pickles, curd, sambhar, poppadum and more. It’s served on a banana leaf and traditionally eaten with hands only, but most restaurants will give tourists cutlery if they request it. Malabar Junction at the Malabar House Heritage Hotel is one of the best restaurants in Fort Kochi and a great place to try innovative Keralan and Mediterraneaninfluenced dishes and wines with fresh, local, organic produce. ■

Local Cuisine The Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh is home to an eclectic range of restaurants serving up creative plates. Here are five standout spots. Words Marissa Carruthers | Photography Enric Català Contreras

goingplacesmagazine.com | 41 | April 2019

Innovative flair spills out of kitchens across Phnom Penh, where classic dishes are being reinvented, a creative collection of fusion plates are served, and imaginative menus are drawn up. We throw the spotlight on some of the most vibrant restaurants on the capital’s culinary scene, spanning stalwart spots to new contenders.

Friends the Restaurant Serving as a feeder restaurant to many of Cambodia’s hotels and eateries, Friends the Restaurant is a social enterprise operated by non-governmental organisation Friends International. As part of its mission to break the cycle of poverty, it trains and employs former street children and marginalised youth in a variety of sectors, with hospitality being one. This is the final stage in the budding chefs’ 18-month course. Former culinary student Saroeun Meas was promoted to head chef in late 2017, having spent almost a decade working in the restaurant to train future chefs. As the mastermind behind its current menu, Saroeun has created daring dishes that play with flavours and inject a contemporary feel into classic cuisine. The result is a standout menu that features a bountiful range of dishes, all with their roots in Southeast Asia. These include a juicy sautéed mushroom laap with smoky eggplant puree, topped with lime and chilli. Then there are roasted cherry tomatoes, avocado, spinach and sautéed mushrooms that sit atop multigrain bread, all topped with cashew nut cheese. And, of course, there are Cambodian classics, including the national dish of fish amok cooked and served in banana leaves. The more adventurous can get their protein fix in the form of the giant creepy-crawly bug burger – expect tarantulas, ants, crickets

and other insects. “I wanted to make a really creative menu,” says Saroeun. “Something that makes us stand out.” tree-alliance.org/our-restaurants/friends.php

Topaz Topaz has been giving French fine dining a local twist for more than two decades. Since 2002, head chef Sopheak Pov has led the sophisticated spot’s reinterpretation of classical French dishes while adding a taste of Cambodia along the way.

A recently refreshed menu highlights Sopheak’s creativity and passion. Take the beef and mushroom soup, a dish that embodies a snug French autumn and takes almost 10 hours to perfect, or the beef fillet that features French black truffles, crisp and light potato cakes, and seasonal vegetables. Signature Topaz dishes remain on the menu, such as Sopheak’s popular pairing of foie gras with mango. “I wanted to bring together France and Cambodia,” says Sopheak, who spent three months gaining experience in French kitchens in Paris and Bordeaux during the start of his tenure with Topaz.

Mara Steak, Wok & Wine

5. - 6. La' Baab's prahok ktis dip; its interior is inspired by traditional wooden Battambang homes

In mid-January, a new version of upmarket urban-chic restaurant Mara was unveiled in the form of Mara Steak, Wok and Wine. Building on the success of its predecessor, the upgraded restaurant features a menu packed with reimagined delights.

To maintain Topaz’s edge, a Michelin-star chef is invited from France every quarter to spend time working with the kitchen’s 45 staff. The trip culminates in a decadent multi-course menu served during an exclusive evening at Topaz. The colourful Rum Baba is one of the latest desserts added to the menu and was created for a Michelin event. “I want to show Cambodia as a culinary destination and put it back on the map,” says Sopheak.

With beef being the main order of the day, the swanky yet hip steakhouse serves a sensational mix of steaks and succulent cuts of meat. The range of freshly imported grain-fed Angus beef and Tajima wagyu beef is proving popular with the affluent young local crowd

La’ Baab Since June 2017, La’ Baab has been serving creative Lower Mekong cuisine, with dishes putting a new spin on classics. Tucked away up some flights of stairs in a nondescript building, La’ Baab epitomises contemporary Cambodia, both in its décor and dishes. The previously abandoned apartment has been transformed into a stylish spot that draws inspiration from the traditional wooden homes that dot rural Battambang. “We’ve tried to preserve traditional elements while being creative, young and hip,” says coowner Rith Yoeun, sitting beneath a light fixture made from traditional bamboo baskets used by Mekong fishermen. The result is a colourful explosion of flavours that take diners on a culinary journey across Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam in stylishly quirky surroundings.

5

Innovative options include the Vietnamese dish of snails stuffed with pork and fresh lemongrass, served alongside a sweet and sour fish sauce. The Cambodian speciality of prahok – a pungent fermented fish paste commonly used in cooking – takes centre stage in La’ Baab’s spin on prahok ktis, a delicious wholesome dip made from prahok, minced pork, shallots, palm sugar and coconut milk, served alongside raw vegetables, including cabbage, cucumbers and carrots. “We balance modern with traditional in everything we do,” adds Rith. facebook.com/LabaabResto

finest – a flavoursome blend of herbs, with a subtle hint of spice. Here, melt-in-the-mouth chunks of beef are infused with the flavours of Khmer curry made from staple Cambodian ingredients, including galangal, garlic, shallots, lemongrass, kaffir lime and cinnamon. Coconut milk sweetens the dish, topped with roasted peanuts and dry chilli.

Other crowd-pleasers include the soft-shell crab seasoned with spicy mayonnaise and Kampot pepper, Pacific and Canadian oysters, and a smattering of small plates for sharing. These include tofu and broccolinis sautéed with fresh pepper, crispy pork belly and truffle fries.

Cristia and his team have worked to elevate the simplest of dishes, with the traditional local snack of Na Tang featuring on the menu. The spicy shrimp-and-pork dip, served with crunchy glutinous rice crackers, is the ideal way to start a meal. “I wanted to create something really unique,” says Cristia. “Simple dishes that use high-quality ingredients and products.”

The fine flavours of Japan also feature heavily, with tataki and sashimi dishes available, as well as saba (lightly grilled mackerel). Throw into the mix Mara’s cavernous walk-in wine cellar, and an evening of fine food paired with perfect drinks in swanky surroundings awaits. facebook.com/MaraRestaurant

Sense Of

Belonging

What significance do Mount Kinabalu in Malaysia and Mount Fuji in Japan hold for the communities and the natural landscape that live under the shadows of these iconic peaks? In a four-year project, Malaysian and Japanese photographers embarked on an exchange journey of discovery to capture the scenes from a personal point of view. These are some of the photos from the final phase.

With education, Buku Jalanan Chow Kit provides opportunities and hope. Words Tan Lee Kuen | Photography SooPhye

goingplacesmagazine.com | 52 | April 2019

It was late morning when I walked the streets of Chow Kit, trying to find Buku Jalanan Chow Kit. There was no signage anywhere and asking around gave no results until I came across a small tuck shop. As soon as I mentioned the name, the proprietor gave a little nod and pointed to the stairs next to his shop up to the first floor. As I entered the premises, a football whizzed past my feet, retrieved by a young boy in a school uniform. He was energetically playing football with his two friends in an empty space in the room, which was large and airy with windows running along two walls. There was a study area with tables, chairs and a ping pong table, as well as a kitchen and a small seating area. The walls were decorated with inspirational quotes and art by children. There were several shelves lined with books. This is Buku Jalanan Chow Kit (BJCK), an education centre and a safe space for children in the neighbourhood, many of whom are stateless and have no access to education. "It's a space like home, where the children can feel safe," says founder Siti Rahayu Baharin, whose laidback and cheerful disposition belies a steely resolve and a propensity to do good by her principles.

pushed even further into the margins. "Chow Kit is not a neighbourhood for children to grow up in. There are no green spaces or places that they can safely play," said Siti Rahayu. She was volunteering at the local soup kitchens when she realised that she wanted to feed the mind as well as the body. "Education is a stepping stone for the children to change their lives," she said. The effects of poverty on children are far-reaching, especially when they do not receive an education. Without it, their opportunities would be severely limited, and they would not have the resources that might get them out of poverty. BJCK didn't always have a place to call its own. Siti Rahayu started the programme in

an alleyway with classes twice a week. The children would sit on mats placed on the ground, diligently listening to the tutors, mostly students from neighbouring universities, and scribbling in their books lit up by torchlights and solar lamps. After three years on the street, Siti Rahayu and her team started envisioning a permanent place for BJCK, which came into being thanks to their efforts along with generous donations and sponsorships. Confectionary company Julie's Biscuits pays the rent while ThinkCity, a community-focused urban regeneration organisation, sponsored the renovations. BJCK held its first class in its new location on the last day of 2017. The centre currently has 55 children, 28 of whom attend the school taught by three teachers. The children start coming into the centre in the morning and stay on until evening. For many of them, home is often a cramped single room shared with a large family. At BJCK, they have breathing space to study and play. The school uniform is optional, but the children opt to wear it anyway because it gives them a sense of belonging. At around noon, lunch is served. On my day of visit, one of the mothers was volunteering in the kitchen and prepared a delicious meal of baked chicken, chicken soup and stir-fried vegetables with rice. After lunch, the children start their classes, held five days a week. The children are taught Math, Science, Bahasa and English with special subjects such as A Wonder A Day, designed to stimulate curiosity. The students are required

to research a topic of their own choosing and present it to the class. Besides regular classes, BJCK offers additional lessons like art and baking. A large industrial oven sits in the kitchen, thanks to a sponsor. A local university student comes in once in a while to give coding lessons. On Sundays, another volunteer gives Japanese lessons, which are open to everyone. Other opportunities outside the classroom have arisen for the children. A few were selected to act in a play called Mona ke Daerah M staged by Akademi Seni TFTN, while others have participated in public poetry jams. "What matters to us is that their education is not only about academics and that they are taught life skills too," said Siti Rahayu, who refers to the children as “my kids.

Buku Jalanan Chow Kit welcomes people with skills to come and volunteer, whether by running a one-day workshop or a regular programme. Monetary donations are also always welcomed. Get in touch with BJCK through its Facebook page.

She is adamant not to impose her own values on the children. Instead, Siti Rahayu sees her role as a mentor rather than an authoritative figure. "We want to allow the children to dream but shaped by their own beliefs. We seek to inspire and to provide them with hope and opportunities," she said. "Everything here is based on trust and love." Siti Rahayu, who teaches general studies at a local college, comes from a small village in Kedah and attributes her can-do spirit to her parents. "I owe who I am to my parents and my time at university. I want to give back to society however I can," she said. â–

“A Ferrari.” Gary Lee answers without hesitation when I ask what’s the strangest oblation he’s ever made. Paper oblation – flammable creations burned by members of the Chinese community at funerals and religious festivals – have certainly come a long way. In days of yore, oblation crafts were mainly made up of paper bungalows, houses and cars, but now requests range from flashy to over the top. According to a 2014 news report, the cardboard version of the iPhone 5S was one of the most in-demand offerings that year.

2 3

And how do they cope with non-standard requests, such as the Ferrari?

4

“Sebuah Ferrari.”

Orang Kantonis misalnya perlu menjalankan upacara ‘Jump Over the Fire’. Maka replika kertas yang sama mungkin akan dimanfaatkan dengan cara berbeza. Contohnya, bakul pada replika rumah kertas biasanya

“Good old Google,” Lee replies, with a laugh. “If we have never done something before, we search online for information on its actual size and proportions, then we miniaturise it.” Though Penang has a number of oblation makers, Loh is the most sought after. Apart

“The whole point is to provide the deceased with worldly possessions that can make his afterlife as comfortable as possible,” explains Loh Ah Ban, Lee’s father-in-law and owner of the eponymous Penang-based supplier of paper oblation crafts. “From motorcars to aeroplanes, massage chairs to pianos, we’ve done them all.”

Ketika upacara pengebumian, replika-replika kertas ini akan dibakar sebagai pemberian oleh keluarga si mati ataupun digunakan sempena perayaan keagamaan tertentu masyarakat Cina. from creating paper crafts for funeral rites, he also makes giant paper effigies of Chinese gods that are put up in neighbourhoods to guard the residents from hungry spirits that are said to roam the streets during the Hungry Ghost month. A second-generationer who has been in the business for nearly 50 years, Loh is wellknown for using high-quality printed coloured papers in the bodies of his paper effigies, giving them an attractive glow when they come into contact with light.

Penang. He is assisted by a team of long-time workers, each responsible for creating different parts of the structure before the components are combined into a single masterpiece.

To maintain a high level of quality, Loh doesn’t do end users or walk-ins. His clientele primarily comprises undertakers and other shops that specialise in the paraphernalia. “When our clients come to us, they have a specific list of requirements. Different dialect groups have different rituals; the Cantonese, for example, have a unique ritual called ‘Jump Over the Fire’. Even if it’s the same feature, it may be used differently. For example, a paper house has a basket containing paper money, as the Chinese believe that this money will come useful to the deceased in their afterlife. But how these baskets are used differs according to ethnic origin.”

Every step is done by hand, from assembling each rod to the patching of coloured papers. it usually takes them a day to finish making a two-metre paper house. Larger paper houses will require more time, of course. When completed, the deceased’s name is written in Chinese on the top, right and left of the paper house.

Loh moved around a few locations before settling in his current workshop, tucked in an unnamed alley behind Lebuh Carnarvon, one of the oldest and busiest streets in George Town,

At the time of my visit, three women are gluing squares of coloured paper onto a cane structure. Squatting on the floor are several men cutting and bending lengths of cane, while one of them is lashing them into an intricate frame, taller than a man.

One of the ladies waves me over to show her handiwork. Her voice rings with pride as she points out the elaborate door and the servants, represented by paper figurines so small that I need to squint to spot them. The amount of detail is extraordinary. When the structure is finished, I’m told it will be a colourful heritage house with sweeping staircases and ornate decorations. A lovingly assembled work of art, no less, that’s destined to go up in flames. ■

SPECIAL FEATURE

An Oil With Many Possibilities

Palm oil is more than just about its goodness and rich source of tocotrienol. There are other substances in the vegetable oil that lends a lot of health benefits. Let’s take a look at some of them:

Plants contain unique substances, called phytonutrients, which are believed to provide health benefits to us, such as protection from certain diseases while boosting our heart health. Research has uncovered a considerable amount of phytonutrients in palm oil. In a review paper co-authored by Professor Dr Ammu K Radhakrishnan, published in the Malaysian Journal of Nutrition in 2010, it is stated that crude palm oil is one of the richest natural plant sources of 13 different types of carotenoids, the substances that give palm oil its orangereddish colour. Red palm oil is a rich source of phytonutrients – α- (alpha), β- (beta) and ϒ- (gamma) carotenoids are converted into vitamin A in the body. Beta carotene can prevent LDL cholesterol – the bad cholesterol – from being oxidised, which increases the risk of coronary heart disease. Research increasingly suggests that some carotenes may protect from certain cancers, such as breast cancer.

Apart from carotene, palm oil is also a rich source of phytonutrients such as phytosterols. Well-known for their ability to help lower the cholesterol levels in our body, phytosterols are frequently added to foods traditionally known to be high in fats, such as margarine and butter, to reduce the total cholesterol and bad cholesterol content. Squalene, the substance mostly found in shark liver oil, can also be obtained from plant sources, including palm oil. It not only helps to inhibit cholesterol production, thus reducing cholesterol levels and providing a boost to heart health, it also helps to reduce the risk of certain cancers, such as skin cancer.

Phytonutrients found present in small portions in palm oil are Coenzyme Q|O, Polyphenolics and Phospholipids. Coenzyme Q10 boosts energy production by the body and protects from cell damage caused by free radicals and other by products of metabolism. Polyphenolics inhibits oxidation of bad cholesterol, thus promoting better heart health. It also protects from cancers such as prostate cancer and breast cancer.

064_Apr 2019_Palm Oil_Special Feature02.indd 64

Phospholipids promote and support better nerve function, improve memory and brain function as we age. They can be useful to pregnant women, to help support the memory and brain development of the baby.

65 News & Updates

oneworld Digital Transformation The CEOs of oneworld® member airlines met in London in February to unveil a radical transformation as the global alliance celebrated the 20th anniversary of its launch. Adopting a fresh brand positioning with a new tagline, ‘Travel Bright’, the alliance will use visuals of energetic characters set against bright pastel-coloured backgrounds to reflect the energy of the alliance’s core target market – frequent international business travellers of today’s generation. From this year onwards, the alliance plans to harness the power of digital convergence to make it even easier for customers to reach every corner of their 1,100-destination global network. Through the compilation of information from each of the alliance’s 13 airlines’ systems, users will, once the initiative is fully rolled out, only need their favourite airline’s

mobile app to access functions such as flight check-in, e-boarding pass, flight information and updates, baggage tracking, seat selection, payment for added baggage and easier access to airport lounges. Malaysia Airlines Group CEO Captain Izham Ismail said, “The partnerships we’ve explored and embarked on with various member airlines have definitely helped us expand beyond the Asia Pacific market that we focus on. We are happy that oneworld is undergoing a radical transformation not just to remain competitive in the market but to also appeal to customers and member airlines alike. Seamless connectivity, unrivalled frequent flyer programmes and enhanced customer convenience are just some of the things that our customers look for when choosing a oneworld member carrier. We look forward to a brand new decade with oneworld and many more to come.”

Female Power In celebration of International Women’s Day last month, Malaysia Airlines operated an all-femalecrew special flight to honour all the women who have elevated the national carrier on the world stage. The women behind the MH1438 and MH1447 Kuala Lumpur-Langkawi return flight on 4 March comprised second officers Nur Waie Hidayah Mohamad Rasidin, who is Malaysia Airlines’ first female cadet pilot, and Wong Wei Ming; Hurul Ain Sabarudin, the airline’s first female licensed aircraft engineer; Ramp Duty Manager Afilah Ab Aziz; Ramp Officer for Aircraft Services Noor Fitriah Zaini; In-flight Supervisor Ernee Hasnita Malek; and flight stewardesses Khaleeda Mohin, Parvadi Sandran and Low Kar Yee. In 2018, 60 percent of the group’s total new hires were women, in line with the group’s equal employment policy anchored on a candidate’s merits and qualifications and the nation’s aspiration to have more women in the workforce. Female employees totalled 4,454 in the group, of which Malaysia Airlines had 2,919 staff, with 15 female pilots, 78 female engineers and technicians, and 1,689 female cabin crew.

SAFETY + SERVICE INFO

CABIN LUGGAGE HANDLING Passenger and crew safety onboard our flights is our highest priority. In compliance with the airline’s policy and in observing Occupational, Safety and Health Regulations requirements, cabin crew are no longer required to stow passengers’ hand luggages into the overhead stowage compartment. This is to minimise occupational hazard and ergonomic risks faced by cabin crew in the aircraft. Cabin crew on duty will, however, assist passengers travelling with infants, young passengers travelling alone, the elderly, and passengers with reduced mobility. Passengers who are fit and in good health must carry, stow and secure their own hand luggages on board. Hand luggage exceeding the 7kg weight limit is required to be checked in before boarding.

PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PED) For safety reasons and in line with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia guidelines, mobile phones and all PEDs must be switched off once aircraft doors are closed. Whilst cruising, devices placed in flight mode may be used. The devices must again be switched off during the approach for landing until the aircraft is parked at the terminal building. Devices transmitting strong signals must remain switched off throughout the flight, until disembarkation. The Captain may prohibit the use of devices that can interfere with the aircraft’s system.

LITHIUM BATTERIES Lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries for portable electronic devices (PEDs), including medical devices must not exceed 2g for lithium metal batteries and 100Wh for lithium ion batteries. All spare batteries, including lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries, for PEDs must be carried in passengers’ carry-on baggage only. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. For PEDs containing non-spillable batteries, they must be 12V or less or 100Wh or less. A maximum of two spare batteries may be carried. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.

ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES Electronic cigarettes must be carried on one’s person or in carry-on baggage only. Recharging of the device in-flight is not permitted.

ZERO TOLERANCE OF ABUSE We value courteousness. Any form of threat, verbal abuse or violence towards our staff will be taken seriously. We are committed to supporting anyone who has been the victim of an assault.

FILM REVIEWS

WANT HELP WITH WHAT TO WATCH THIS MONTH? FILMMAKER AND DIRECTOR KAM RASLAN MAKES THE CASE FOR THESE MOVIES. finally redeemed. The once-powerful Russian boxer (Dolph Lundgren) now has an equally terrifying son and this fight will surely be the revenge match of the century. Does Adonis Creed have the courage to avenge his father? But does Adonis Creed need to avenge his father? What, asks Rocky Balboa, truly motivates Adonis Creed? The answer, if he can find it, will make Adonis Creed his own man and the Creed movies their own soulful legacy. goingplacesmagazine.com | 80 | April 2019

CREED II If Sylvester Stallone was a musical act, he would have started in the 1970s as the defiant blue-collar champion Bruce Springsteen before becoming the big-hair stadium rock band of Van Halen that was fun and financially lucrative but empty-headed. Now he has become the Simon and Garfunkel of boxing, who is meditative, harmonising with others and sympathetic. As the co-writer of Creed II, he is not only reassessing his legacy but rectifying the creative bombast of his own past with a movie that is both low-key and suddenly viscerally painful. As the actor/ writer/producer behind Rocky, Rambo and Cobra, he virtually invented the action genre and then proceeded to boil it down into turgid, macho, revenge-driven slugfests. He became a waste of his own unique talent. But with Creed II, Stallone has returned to his origins and helped to craft a moving film about father and sons, parenthood, adulthood, ageing and acceptance, in a movie that removes the most predictably lazy Hollywood motivating force: revenge. Revenge should be a good motivation for Creed II when our young boxer Adonis Creed (the fantastic Michael B. Jordan) is challenged to a match by the very man who killed his own father in Rocky 4, which was perhaps the worst of the Rocky movies with its flag-waving triumphalism but is now

MARY POPPINS RETURNS It has been over 50 years since Mary Poppins went away, but now she has returned. I didn’t even know we needed her, but it turns out that we do. Just like the children in the original movie, we have grown up and lost our way a little. The humdrum and sometimes tragic realities of daily life have conspired to make us lose sight of the miracles that we have and the potential magic that is all around us. Just like the Banks family, we don’t know it but if only somebody could descend from the clouds with an umbrella and, I don’t know, just sort it all out with a mixture of love, whimsy, fantasy and even a cool head for domestic finances. We need Mary Poppins, that perfect nanny who is slightly sinister, completely in control, effortlessly fun, nononsense and yet full of “stuff and nonsense”. It turns out that we do need Mary Poppins and now she has returned.

Emily Blunt is the star of Mary Poppins Returns, so much so that it is as if nobody else need be there. She gives a modernity to what could otherwise be an anachronistic musical about an Edwardian-era nanny. With a sly glint in her eye, we know that she knows about the modern world of Trump and Brexit, but she’s not going to tell us (because you mustn’t speak, according to her recent horror movie A Quiet Place). And alongside Blunt is Lin-Manuel Miranda, the Puerto Rican creator of the political hip-hop musical Hamilton, which makes him an unusual lamplighter on the streets of London, but he reminds us that we are whiplash up-to-date. The casting for this surprising return of Mary Poppins reminds us that her presence is a fantasy, that we unknowingly summoned her and that she’ll be gone again soon. Enjoy it while she’s here. If I have a criticism, it is that the songs are not very memorable, unlike the original movie that was bursting with instant classics. Perhaps that is because Hollywood still hasn’t worked out how to make musicals work for a modern audience that just can’t understand why people are suddenly bursting into song. Although vibrantly alive in Bollywood since the original Mary Poppins, the musical has virtually disappeared from Hollywood. Despite finding a final refuge in Disney, apart from The Little Mermaid, which had several memorable songs, the approach seems to be to have only one standout song (Let It Go in Frozen) while the rest are merely musical backdrops for visual pyrotechnics (some song with a snowman). But apart from that, Mary Poppins Returns is the movie you didn’t know you needed.

Mary Poppins Returns and Creed II are playing onboard. Check your in-flight entertainment system for channel information.

After winning the heavyweight championship title under the mentorship of Rocky Balboa, Adonis Creed prepares for a quiet life with his newly-wed wife, Bianca. Then, despite objections from Rocky, Adonis takes up a challenge and decides to fight Viktor Drago, the son of a Soviet boxer who killed his father in the ring three decades ago in a tragic match.

Michael Banks and his three children learn that their house will be foreclosed in five days unless they repay a loan. Feeling hopeless, Michael and his sister Jane are revisited by their beloved childhood nanny, Mary Poppins. Through her magic, she helps the family rediscover joy and wonder by bringing them on a fun-filled adventure.

Starr Carter is a teenager who lives in a black ghetto but attends an affluent private school. While being driven home from a party, she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend, Khalil, at the hands of a police officer. Facing pressure from her community and weighing the risk of being isolated by her friends, Starr must decide to stand up for what’s right.

Narrated by Kristen Bell, this documentary features a group of scientists in Chengdu, China who dedicate their lives to protecting giant pandas. An American biologist journeys there and begins a life-changing adventure through her research work at the panda sanctuary. She forms a bond with Qian Qian, a panda born in captivity that is to be released into the mountains of Sichuan.

Malaysian singer-songwriter Sissy Imann has been making waves since she burst onto the local music scene with the hit single, Mungkin Kamu, We catch up with the young KL lass who has captivated fans with her brand of upbeat, jazz tunes.

Tell us a bit about yourself. Where were you born and where did you spend your childhood? I am a singer-songwriter, a music teacher, also an actress. I was born and raised in Kuala Lumpur. Like all kids, I spent my childhood wondering what I would turn out to be … and what a rollercoaster ride it has been! How and when did you get into singing? When I was little, I loved to shout so much so that one day, I was scolded by my uncle. So my dad, being the overly protective dad that he is, he decided to hire a vocal teacher to teach me how to control my voice. Not to sing, but just so that I wouldn’t shout around the place. But little did he know, it was the beginning of my singing journey. So thank you, Dad, and the uncle who scolded me! You obtained a Bachelor of Teaching in Music Education last year. Are you going into teaching or will you still focus on music? I used to dream of becoming the most beautiful headmistress when I was a child. I love teaching! In fact, I started teaching when I was just 16 at a private music centre as a piano teacher. It’s hard to do both, but for the time being, my focus is on my music. I still teach part-time though. Trying hard to juggle both, actually. You have chosen to focus on jazz. Why did you choose this genre? I just love jazz. That’s it. Where do you get inspiration for your songs? I love reading. I love watching movies. I love listening to my friends’ stories. So, the things that I write about are often inspired by the stories I hear or watch. I even write about the things that my friends confide in me about their boyfriends. And of course, I often write based on my own experiences as well.

Apr 2019_GPE02.indd 87

Growing up, who are some of the musicians who inspired you to become a musician yourself? Alicia Keys for the keys, obviously, but mostly Michael Bublé. I love Bublé so much that he is the only man I would say 'yes' to if he proposed to me! Just kidding. But I do love Mr. Buble! To me, he is an all-rounder, a musician and an incredible entertainer. His voice, his music, his stage presence, his image, his witty and hilarious jokes, I love him so much! Tan Sri P. Ramlee was also a huge influence on my decision to be a musician. I grew up listening to him. He is indescribable. A musical genius. I love how he told stories through his beautiful songs. If I were to invite a person, dead or alive, to dinner, it would be him. Which local artist or band would you most like to collaborate with for a song or an album? Locally, I would say, Faizal Tahir. I co-wrote Pesanan Ayahanda, my latest single, with him and his team, so maybe a duet in the future! The others are Dato’ Sheila Majid and Noh Salleh. How do you deal with fame? Do you get recognised when you are out and about? Here’s a little story. When I first underwent my practical training at a school, a student bluntly asked me, “Teacher, why are you wearing Sissy Imann’s name tag? She is a singer, I know her songs. Who is she to you? Are you borrowing her name tag?” That was a funny moment! But after I got myself into a reality show on TV last August, people started to recognise me in public, even without makeup – some people say I look different without makeup. Some people even record me while I’m eating my chicken and licking my fingers at KFC and post it on Instagram. I don’t mind it at all. What is important to me is to gain their attention positively, so that I can reach out to more people and tell the stories I want to tell. What do you do during downtime? I take time for myself. I lock myself in my room to brainstorm, and then travel to enrich and recharge my mind, and I take a digital break from gadgets. What can we expect from you in 2019? More music! More collaborations and releasing songs that I’ve composed. I’ve started acting too! So please cheer for me when you see me at home on TV or at the cinema.

For spending a minimum of USD85 (RM350) at any participating Eraman outlet nationwide, participants stood to win prizes worth a total of about USD300,000 (RM1.2 million), which included the two cars, holiday packages to Scotland, Austria and Switzerland, gift vouchers, designer handbags, jewellery and Petron Miles Card points.

Sharing Prosperity As part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur launched its Charity At Heart 2019 campaign during the Lunar New Year festive season to help underprivileged and single mothers. The campaign launch was celebrated with a lively lion dance performance, a grand yee sang toss, and a free giveaway of 111 tote bags to lucky shoppers.

Grand Introduction Premium luggage brand RIMOWA recently opened its first flagship store in Japan in Ginza 7-Chome, the popular luxury shopping district.
