SHORT FILM
FROM LUNDANG WITH LOVE
To pay homage to the more than 40-year flagship Kuala Lumpur-London route, Malaysia Airlines has produced another short film, this time featuring a heartwarming love story between a UK-born engineer in London and a pretty Malay doctor in the small town of Kota Bahru in the northern state of Kelantan. Lundang To Newcastle tells the true love story between Aadil Marzani and Nik Athirah, debunking the proverb ‘out of sight, out of mind’ and proving that love truly knows no boundaries. The pair, who will marry this month, tells us how it all started. You guys were sort of “introduced” over Facebook. What was it about each other that just clicked for you? AADIL: It was that time of the year when people uploaded their graduation photos on Facebook. One of my relatives had just graduated from Trinity College Dublin. There was a cute lady standing next to my relative and I thought this girl is really pretty. She has this simple yet eye-catching smile. I privately messaged my relative to ask about her and she came back to me with the green light. After discussing with my relative about how I should approach her over Facebook, I ‘maned’ up and went for it. Athirah used to think I was a boring and serious person. It took me a while to win her over until she saw the funny side of me. I think that’s the difficult part of trying to get to know somebody over an electronic device, it’s not the same as
seeing the person’s emotion face to face. ATHIRAH: I remember it was after my graduation from Trinity College Dublin. I received a text from my close friend asking on behalf of her relative if he could get to know me. My first response was “Wow, this is weird, but I guess there is no harm in making new friends, right?” This went on for a few months until I had the courage to meet up with him in person. And I’m glad I did because I have never met someone who is so fair and honest like Aadil. It is so easy to open up to him. Were there any cultural differences you had to overcome as a couple? AADIL & ATHIRAH: There are many and we’re still uncovering them. Having been born and raised in opposite parts of the world, there are many things that are alien to us. In order to overcome these differences, it is important
What are you looking forward to the most after getting married this month? AADIL: The wedding is in Kelantan, so I’m mostly looking forward to nasi kerabu. I think that’s what drew me first toward a Kelantanese wife! Just kidding. What we are looking forward to is getting the opportunity to travel together. Athirah’s travelled to many places during her university years, so she has promised to take me to all the places she’s been to. ATHIRAH: It’s amazing to think that we only got to see each other once a year and yet, we managed to come this far. But they say that distance makes the heart grows fonder. I’m really looking forward to seeing Aadil again in person, and hopefully, we‘ll travel together after the wedding. Complete this sentence: “Home is …” AADIL: Home is when I’m around the people I care for the most. I move around a lot for work so the feeling of home is never that roof over my head. It’s that place when you can let your guard down and be free. ATHIRAH: Home is where your loved one is. It is not fixed to a place but rather to the person you love. Malaysia Airlines is proud to be the official airline for the ASEAN Summit for which Malaysia is the Chairman of the regional grouping this year. Malaysia will host ASEAN Leaders as well as ASEAN Dialogue Partners in Kuala Lumpur in November 2015 for the 27th ASEAN Summit aimed at the establishment and realisation of an ASEAN Community. ASEAN Foreign Ministers will also meet at the 48th ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting as well as the Post Ministerial Conference with 10 Dialogue Partners of ASEAN from 1–6 August in Kuala Lumpur. Maestro of classical Indian dance, Datuk Ramli Ibrahim, has curated an exciting collection of acts for the Kuala Lumpur International Arts Festival, themed ‘DiverseCity’, in September. He speaks to us about India, and why he chose the acts he has lined up. Name three of the best things that have come out of India for you. A. Depth of understanding and involvement with my art B. Yoga C. Reaffirmation of human values Name three of your favourite places to visit in India. A. Hampi for the garland of historical/ archaeological wonders from the Vijayanagar empire. Taking a coracle (round shaped floating vessel) along the Tungabhadra river running through it is a memorable and unique experience. B. Puri (Odisha) is an authentic medieval city. I never tire of going round and checking the multitude of traditional vendors along the main trunk road in front of the Jagannath temple. C. Pondicherry, where the cultural encounter between Indian and French sensibilities, especially around the quaint French quarters, is full of intriguing surprises. The best vegetarian restaurant you’ve been to in India is … I actually love vegetarian Ashram food. I prefer just simple sattvic food, not the overly cooked or overly spiced vegetarian spreads generally dished out in restaurants. Why did you choose the following acts from India for the KL International Arts Festival? A. The ASEEMA Trust: VR Devika, the director of Aseema Trust, used to invite my Sutra dance ensemble to perform for the children in SOS villages in Madras, where children saved from dire circumstances are looked after and brought up by surrogate mothers in more congenial households. Devika is a cultural activist and compelling story-teller who communicates with children well. She has worked with traditional performing art genres and has endeavoured to empower both art and artists by making them relevant to the contemporary communities. B. Suresh Kaliyath: Suresh is an intense dance-theatre artist specialising in
Ottanthulal, a solo form of Kerala/ Malayalam traditional performing arts, and is able to traverse both the traditional and modern realms, which is what DiverseCity is about. C. Sangeetha Isvaran: Though based in traditional performing arts, Sangeetha has made the quantum jump of being able to transcend her technique and communicate with the community with her art. Her works grapple with many social contemporary issues which impinge on traditional and urban communities. diversecity.my

BETTER CONNECTIONS
Malaysia Airlines’ tie-up with French national railway SNCF has made travelling around France more convenient. A single booking will fly passengers from Malaysia to Paris’ Charles de Gaulle (CDG) airport, and straight onto the high-speed TGV train to 19 French provinces, and vice versa. Bloggers, Kampung Boy City Gal (kampungboycitygal.com) will be sharing their experience flying Malaysia Airlines from Kuala Lumpur to Paris and thereafter, around France with SNCF, highlighting its comfort, food and the breath-taking view of the French countryside from aboard the train this August. Follow them on Instagram (@kampungboycitygal) or Facebook (facebook.com/kampungboycitygal) for updates on their trip. Malaysia Airlines flies direct to Paris daily, with the train/flight bimodal service departing from 19 TGV train stations. Refer to the step-by-step guide below for the service.
Travelling to France:
• At the check-in desk of the foreign departure airport, tag baggage with ‘CDG’ instead of the IATA code of the French train station. • Upon arrival at CDG, retrieve baggage after passport control. • Walk to SNCF Station located between 2 C-D and 2 E-F by following the ‘railway station’ signs: (use the CDGVAL to go from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2). • Go down to Level 2 and proceed to the dedicated TGV AIR counter. Produce e-ticket or ID card to receive a TGV boarding pass. • Validate the pass at one of the yellow validation machines located near the departure platform. • Board train with baggage.
Departing from France: • At the departure train station, proceed to TGV AIR counter. Produce e-ticket or ID card to receive a TGV boarding pass (at least 20 minutes prior to departure). • Validate the pass at one of the yellow validation machines located near the departure platform. • Board the train with baggage. For safety reasons, SNCF is not allowed to check in baggage. • At CDG, proceed to the Malaysia Airlines counter at Terminal 1. • Drop off baggage. • Proceed to departure gate and board flight.
ENRICH JUNIOR
GIMME FIVE
Members of Enrich Junior, Malaysia Airlines’ membership programme for children, had the chance to watch the cast of the popular children’s television show Hi-5 in concert in Jakarta, for which the airline was a cosponsor. Going Places interviews the five group members. Being an Enrich Junior member is a lot of fun. What’s the funnest part of being in Hi-5? STEVIE NICHOLSON: Everything we do is fun! We sing, we dance, we tour the world and the most fun is we get to meet the children! We meet children from all around the world! They are all unbelievable! They’re full of energy, they’re always smiling and during the show they’re all excited to see us. How do you want to inspire children? TANIKA ANDERSON: I think the children inspire us! When we look at them, we see how much fun they’re having, how much they smile just to be happy. And I think that’s what makes Hi-5 very special. And that reminds
you to be happy all the time no matter how old you are, you don’t have to ‘grow up’, just be kids forever, having fun all the time. How has it been since joining Hi-5? DAYEN ZHENG: This is my fourth year in Hi-5, and it has been a fun four years so far! What fun things do you like to do on holiday? MARY LASCARIS: I love to spend time with my family. When I’m at the house, I’ll sit on the couch and stay in my pajamas all day! But I also like to go to the beach on a hot sunny day, I like picnics, I like airplanes, I like everything! What’s the best part about being in Hi-5? AINSLEY MELHAM: The best part about being in Hi-5 is that the children recognise you when you’re in the studio, and when they see you, they say “Hey you’re not that tall like I see you on the TV show” so the excitement that we see in their eyes is the best part for me.
Hi-5 are loved by children the world over, are there any special children in your life? STEVIE NICHOLSON: I think all the kids are special, especially when you’re up on stage and they grab your hands and say “I know you!” I think they’re all incredible and I feel that we learn so much from the children.

COFFEE, MELBOURNE-STYLE Melbourne is undoubtedly the Coffee Capital of Australia, importing over 30,000 kilogrammes of beans each day to satisfy the city’s caffeine obsession. To prove the point, Tourism Australia brought in popular Melbourne cafés, LuxBite and St Ali, for a unique coffee-and-dessert pairing session. With sugary sensations that include coconut and kaffir lime panna cotta; peanut butter parfait and salted caramel; raspberry, lychee and rose petals; and a chocolate ‘flower’ that opens up in a vanilla ‘soup’ created by LuxBite’s Malaysian co-owner, pastry chef Bernard Chu, and matched with St Ali’s own Orthodox Blend served by its Head of Coffee and World Brewers Cup Champion, Matt Perger, the pairings paint a sweet picture of what the coffee scene in Melbourne has to offer its visitors. stali.com.au luxbite.com.au

Malaysian designers play it bold and glamorous this season
BERNARD CHANDRAN DURRAH
MODERN BLING London-based Malaysian jewellery designer Durrah Khalil has been in love with jewellery since she was a little girl. She cut her teeth in gemology at renowned jewellery houses Mouwad and Tiffany & Co before continuing her studies at the Gemological Institute of America and London’s University of the Arts. Branching out on her own, Durrah has launched her own range of products designed using precious and semi-precious materials that she describes as “being essentially classic with a touch of modern edginess”.
INNER BEAUTY For his 2015-2016 Ready-to-Wear collection, designer Bernard Chandran draws upon a woman’s inner strength to create modern and chic pieces that are feminine yet confident thanks to bold lines, bright colours and twists on classic designs. bernardchandran.com

HOLISTIC EXPERIENCE The Maya Ubud Resort and Spa in Bali, a tranquil riverside sanctuary on the edge of the main ‘town’ of Ubud famous for its paddy fields and artisan craftworks, was recently named 15th among the Top 25 Hotels in Indonesia by TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards 2015. Undoubtedly, its many attractive features, including its traditional-inspired architecture, close-to-nature landscaping, holistic spa menu and, of course, excellent amenities and service play a role in this recognition. Four food and beverage outlets serving local favourites and international cuisine, including nightly themed dinners, would whet any gastronomy cravings. Burn off the extra calories by participating in free or paid activities such as yoga for beginners, taichi, pilates, nature walk, meditation sessions, trekking tours, personalised fitness training and Balinese dance lessons on the resort grounds. Even a casual walk through the beautifully landscaped grounds would suffice for exercise, with paths taking you past the grand carved entrances of the exclusive villas, down to the spa and riverside café with the resort’s second pool situated right next to the Petanu river. A stay at the Maya Ubud would leave guests refreshed and rejuvenated thanks to the holistic lifestyle cleverly incorporated into the resort’s everyday undertakings. mayaresorts.com

EXHIBITION
This month, London’s Royal Academy of Arts presents Joseph Cornell: Wanderlust, the UK’s first major retrospective of Joseph Cornell’s vast oeuvre in 35 years. Although he never travelled abroad and rarely ventured outside the city of New York, Cornell explored his wanderlust through art. Collecting bric-a-brac was integral to his creative process, and this exhibition focuses on his collages, films and box constructions, known as his ‘shadow boxes’, which are all assembled from found objects and materials. The items he collects reveal his wanderlust, with many pieces depicting foreign lands and cultures. If you’re en route to New York City, a visit to see Teresita Fernández’s free installation Fata Morgana in Madison Square Park is an absolute must. Golden, mirrored discs cut into intricate shapes reminiscent of foliage hang like a canopy over the Park’s pathways, encasing passers-by below in a shimmering mirage. Award-winning artist Fernández, who is known for her public sculptures and unconventional use of material, says of the project: “My concept was to invert the traditional notion of outdoor sculpture by addressing all of the active walkways of the Park rather than setting down a sculptural element as its centre”. In Fata Morgana, Fernández has not only created a spectacular installation, but she also takes full advantage of the opportunity to create something that is not limited by space as is the case with regular galleries. Two expats recommend their favourite things to do in and around the city DEVAN VIDONDARAJA moved to Malaysia from Australia five years ago to reconnect with relatives, and to learn more about the country.
MARK O’DEA came to Malaysia two years ago to join the band, The London Boys. He now hosts two television programmes, The 8TV Quickie and ESPN FC. For a quick bite: MARK: is a fan of mamak roadside stalls scattered around KL. He says they serve decently priced food, and stalls remain open till the wee hours of the morning. For gourmet burgers, he suggests myBurgerLab (myburgerlab.com) for their juicy patties served in freshly made charcoal buns. DEVAN: loves Malaysian food, especially beef rendang, biryani rice and satay sold in the night market in the suburb of Taman Tun Dr Ismail on Sundays.
To hang out: DEVAN: prefers Publika (facebook.com/ PublikaGallery). As a family man, he is attracted to the shopping spot because of its chic eateries, cool cafés and numerous play areas for kids. For a good night out: DEVAN: likes The Roof (theroof.com.my), Rootz (facebook.com/RootzclubKL), Marini’s On 57 (marinis57.com) and SkyBar for the great music, chic fit-out and fabulous crowd they pull in. According to him, service at
these establishments is always good, and the cuisine never disappoints. Something for people of all ages? MARK: says Sunway Lagoon (sunwaylagoon.com) has everything for everyone. Kids to teenagers and even adults can have a good time at the theme park with fun rides, shows, pools, and 5D cinemas. To hang out with friends: MARK: says to try out KL’s latest craze – Escape Room (facebook.com/escaperoom. com.my) games where players are locked in a room and the only way to escape is to figure out clues to solve puzzles. For short getaways: DEVAN: recommends The Chateau Spa and Organic Wellness Resort (thechateau. com.my) for the cool breeze and tranquil surroundings. Modelled after a medieval French castle, The Chateau is only an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur. MARK: prefers the former tin mining town of Ipoh, Perak. He recommends Adeline’s Villa (adelinevilla.com), which provides a kampung-style homestay experience. “You will eat, sleep, drink and do activities that will make you feel utterly Malaysian-ised!” he says.

rom the edge of Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown on Petaling Street, to the extremely busy junction where Jalan Ampang meets Jalan Tun Razak, to the mammoth shopping centre known as Berjaya Times Square, the breadth of the city’s ‘Golden Triangle’ is well-known as a shopping, dining and entertainment hub. More recently, with the development of new office towers and integrated residential buildings, it has come to be known as the Central Business District of KL. One would imagine structures of glass and steel permeating the city, but Kuala Lumpur still has its green lungs quite intact. In the city centre, right at the base of the world’s seventh tallest telecommunications tower, the Kuala Lumpur Tower, sits one of the oldest forest reserves in the country – the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve, 11 hectares of tropical rainforest. The variety of flora and fauna, as well as the hanging bridge under the canopies of trees, make it a worthwhile visit after enjoying the 360-degree view of Kuala Lumpur and its surroundings from the 420-metre-tall tower. The forest reserve is not the only green spot in the city centre. The expansive KLCC park near the Petronas Twin Towers is another prime location for a leisurely walk or jog through 20 hectares filled with indigenous trees planted to attract local and migratory birds, along with 23 old and rare trees saved from excavation during the site’s initial
development. A 1.3-kilometre jogging track loops around the park, taking you back to the man-made lake in front of the entrance to Suria KLCC, the shopping mall at the base of the towers. Inside, choose from numerous restaurants and cafés, from the posh Harrods café and international dining chains, to all manner of Asian cuisine,
from Malaysian to Korean to Chinese, Indian and Middle Eastern, from the lowest to the highest price point, and even fast food faves in multi-cuisine food courts. Suria KLCC is known for considerable shopping options and is packed with shoppers on weekends despite being only a stone’s throw from another of Malaysia’s ‘Big Five’ shopping centres, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur (pavilion-kl.com), along with adjoining establishments such as upscale shopping centre Starhill Gallery, mid-range mecca Fahrenheit 88, all-time favourite Lot 10, bargain-buy duo of Bukit Bintang Plaza and Imbi Plaza, and prime IT and telecommunications mall Low Yat Plaza. Pavilion is the most popular mall among tourists and locals alike, with its mix of mid-range shopping outlets and high-street brands to luxury boutiques, including Burberry, Gucci, Hermes, Hugo Boss, Canali and Michael Kors in its own section within the mall – the Couture Pavilion, where buyers may blissfully browse and buy before taking a breather at Godiva or TWG Tea. Dining options, too, abound at Pavilion, covering an array of cuisines
with three dedicated sections for food, including the Dining Loft, Gourmet Emporium and Connection, where diners can enjoy their meals alfresco while watching the in-house bands perform. For a taste of local and authentic street food, Jalan Alor nearby is where the action is. Come evening, restaurants extend their business onto the roads, setting up extra tables and chairs on the street in anticipation of patrons who never fail to fill up the available space nightly, even on weekdays. The choices of cheap street eats are amazing, even for locals, ranging from fried rice and noodles to fresh seafood and fruits, covering Chinese cuisine at the bigger restaurants to Malay fare from pushcart stalls permanently stationed on pavements. Expect tasty, flavourful cooking that keeps customers coming back for more. However, if you’re uncomfortable with the idea of street food, Changkat Bukit Bintang just a few minutes away is another street worth exploring for its eclectic mix of casual dining options ranging from Argentinian steak houses to Mexican taco shacks to Irish pubs and Asian-fusion dens. If you are trying to avoid the crowds, it’s best to be here before customers start converging for drinks after work, but the lively ambience at night does make for a more interesting experience. Love the food but not keen on eating by the roadside? Just ask the vendor to 'tapau' (local slang for 'take out') your food and eat it in the comfort of your hotel room, especially if it allows inroom cooking. One such hotel is Invito (invitohotelsuites.com.my), located in the vicinity of Changkat Bukit Bintang. Rooms are equipped with kitchenettes, making it convenient to reheat your take-

aways to enjoy in front of the television. If you prefer dining in a hotel restaurant, the Golden Triangle has a high concentration of four-star and five-star hotels, and most have standout restaurants worth visiting for sumptuous meals, while indulging in luxurious surroundings. One of these is L’Heritage restaurant at the Royale Chulan (theroyalechulan. com) on Jalan Conlay. The hotel is mostly decked out in traditional Malay design, with colonial-styled furnishings. Its celebrated French restaurant has won numerous awards, including Best Fine Dining for 2010-2011 and 2012-2013 from the prestigious Chaîne des Rôtisseurs International Association of Gastronomy. Recommendations from the menu include
the lamb rack with risotto cooked in garlic and rosemary and slow-braised Black Angus rib in vin de Bourgogne. Another must-visit hotel restaurant is the Bintang Revolving Restaurant at the Federal Hotel on Jalan Bukit Bintang (fhihotels.com). The hotel prides itself on being a Merdeka (meaning ‘independence’ in the Malay language) hotel. When the country gained independence from the British in 1957, visiting dignitaries including the King and Queen of Thailand, the Crown Prince and Princess of Japan, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester representing Queen Elizabeth II, and heads of states from Southeast Asian and South Asian countries and former British High Commissioners of Malaya resided at the hotel, which was purpose-built for the event. Nowadays, its interiors have been refurbished to keep up with the sleek and modern trends of metropolitan hotels but a bit of the colonial appeal still prevails, especially at the Kontiki restaurant with its air of adventure, overlooking a quaint retro swimming pool outside. The Bintang Revolving Restaurant, is open only for dinner and is especially popular with couples. With minimal lighting creating an intimate atmosphere for enjoying the beautiful views of the city lit up at night, the restaurant slowly spins to romantic French music. Within this vicinity, there is also a ‘halal-certified’ hotel for those so inclined. PNB Darby Park Executive Suites (pnbdarbypark.com) is alcohol-free. With an overabundance of choice, there really is something for everybody in Kuala Lumpur’s Golden Triangle.

This magnificent setting is the home of the internationally acclaimed Rainforest World Music Festival, returning this year on August 7-9. Here, visitors will also discover the Sarawak Cultural Village, a year-round tourism centre that features a sevenhectare showcase of the 28 ethnic groups that reside in Sarawak, including the Iban, Malay, Bidayuh and Orang Ulu communities. As you enter the centre through an archway decorated with carvings of birds and flowers, the lively village buzzes with music and other sounds. The stunning Mount Santubong rises steeply, reflected in the lake that the village surrounds. “This is the grand entrance of the Sarawak Cultural Village,” explains Jane Lian Labang, the General Manager who has worked here since the centre opened in 1990. “It's like a gateway to a Sarawakian experience.” Highlights at the centre include various

styles of traditional buildings, including longhouses, with exhibits that inform you of Borneo’s various cultural streams in a ‘living museum’. The 150 people from multiple ethnic groups who live in the Sarawak Culture Village illustrate their traditional way of life by making musical instruments and demonstrating fabric weaving, hunting and cooking methods. Stage and technical crews work round the clock before the festival to prepare the venue. Celebrating its 18th year, the threeday festival has grown from an audience of a few hundred in its first year to over 20,000 people now. Music fans descend on the village for workshops and evening performances on two outdoor stages. A recently added indoor Theatre Stage hosts the more intimate acoustic performances. The audience is a mixture of Malaysians and visitors from abroad looking to let their hair down while enjoying the selection of exotic performances. And the beauty of the tropics is that even if there is a downpour, it never really gets cold, and the audience keeps dancing. Festival co-founder Randy RaineReusch reminisces about how he took his own personal journey into the heart of Borneo on a quest to learn to play and document instruments on the verge of passing into antiquity.
“I thought, how do I preserve this and keep it going?” Randy says. “I thought the only way was to figure out how to recontextualise the music. Headhunting and wedding rituals were no longer practiced after Christian missionaries came centuries ago. So there was no context for this music anymore.” “So I thought, why not re-contextualise it as a performance and start a festival,” he adds, noting that it is also a way to revive local pride in the rich ethnic diversity of the region. “I wanted the musicians from the longhouse to realise what treasures they were keepers of, by putting them on the same stage as international musicians from other countries who were doing the same thing. It takes one single person to take an instrument and carry it on to the next generation,” Randy explains. Along with supplying inspiration, the festival has become a gathering of old and new friends for regular concertgoers. For many musicians, it is a first-time journey into the Borneo jungle, where they also get to visit sanctuaries for orangutans and sea turtles. This year, more than 20 groups will perform, including Lindigo from Reunion Island with the music of sugar plantation slaves, banned until the 1980s;

To throw your aural senses further into glorious disarray, Mongolia’s EPI will take the stage, along with Penang’s Culture Shot, Poland’s Kapela Maliszów, Spain’s Korrontzi, Australia’s Le Blanc Bros Cajun Band, Republic of Congo’s the Ndima, southern Mexico’s Son de Madera, Taiwan’s Sangpuy, and Driss El Maloumi from Morocco. The Sarawak Tourism Board, the organisers of the Rainforest World Music Festival, is presenting broad styles of music this year, with hands-on workshops where
musicians share techniques with common threads – drumming from Maldivian group, Harubee; lutes of all shapes and sizes, including Gambia’s Sona Jobarteh on the kora, a 21-string lute; and calypso dance grooves via the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago with Kobo Town. The best part of the event is the surprise that comes from a sound or a genre of music that will intrigue even the most hardcore follower of music festivals.

Jun-Lin Yeoh, the current artistic director of the festival, wants to give people an experience they are unlikely to find elsewhere. “The festival is very focused on the theme of ‘world’ music. It has to appeal to the purists who prefer the traditional roots music, as well as to the ones that like a more contemporary fusion,” said Jun-Lin. “In every band, the ethnic identity is powerful and dominant.” But the essence of the festival’s original concept remains true to its larger plan. Music from Sarawak continues to be highlighted, commonly led by the sape, a boat-shaped lute. Master player Mathew Ngau Jau and eightmember Orang Ulu group Sayu Ateng will perform rare songs on indigenous instruments, and local group Kenwy Yang-Qin Ensemble will represent the large ethnic Chinese population. “Sarawak has a lot of spiritual, mystical layers. We want to (emphasise) this very strongly at the festival. At the11:44 end AM of goingplaces_Aug_edited.pdf 1 7/7/15 the day, it has to have the identity of a festival in Borneo that couldn't be
anywhere else,” said Jun-Lin. With all musicians staying in one hotel, the music will play well after the nightly event ends. Jam sessions offering the strangest combinations of instruments and voices you could gather in one place will keep the suspense high for festivalgoers.

Malacca’s MOMENT
Soulful new cafés sweeten the charm of Malaysia’s evocative southern state Text and Photos Sean Yoong

hen Lim Wei Ling moved back to her southern home state of Malacca after seven stressful years in Kuala Lumpur’s banking sector, she wanted to spend her time in a place that cultivated a sense of comfort and contentment. Together with her sister, Wei Fung, she opened a café called Locahouz on a serene street near one of Malaysia’s oldest Chinese temples. Locahouz (53, Tokong Street) is decorated with deeply personal flourishes that hark back to the sisters’ shared history. Their late grandfather’s 80-year-old bicycle, which he took them riding on for dim sum, rests by the wall. Their mother’s sewing machine sits nearby, accompanied by the Lim clan’s rotary phone, tableware and other cherished heirlooms. “I love Malacca, and I love running this café,” Wei Ling says, serving a steaminghot cup of black coffee, prepared in the homemade fashion that her mother taught her. “Whenever my cousins return to visit Malacca, they spend their time here too.” Locahouz illustrates the inimitable charm of a new breed of restaurants and cafés in Malacca, also known as Melaka, which boasts a rich history dating to the 1400s, when it became a strategic port that remained a crucial province throughout centuries of Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial rule.
Malacca’s contemporary cafés are astonishingly atmospheric. Many occupy shop-lots on narrow, nostalgia-imbued streets, surrounded by outlets selling crafts and clothes in bustling Jonker Walk, the state’s version of Chinatown. The food is usually unique. At Locahouz, which opened in October 2014, the sisters serve traditional local favourites like loh mai kai (steamed sticky rice with chicken and mushrooms) and international fare such as ciabatta sandwiches in a setting lined with striking compositions by Malaysian painters. Fix (facebook.com/thedailyfixcafe) – another café rooted in family and friendship – enjoys deservedly brisk business, attracting hundreds of customers on weekends, including day-trippers from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. The Daily Fix’s founders, Julian Yeo and Sung Soo Teng, studied in Melbourne and Sydney in Australia, where they became inspired to introduce top-flight coffee and café fare to Malacca, their home state. Julian’s mother, who operates a souvenir store in Jonker Walk, agreed last year for her son to convert the back of the shop into an eatery. This compelling café can consistently be sighted on social media, with its photogenic abundance of authentic vintage pieces like enamel tiffin carriers and typewriters, artfully arranged in a building constructed in the 1800s. “I love heritage buildings, and I thought there was something I could do with this,” Julian explains, sitting in the café’s leafy indoor courtyard beside a wall adorned with kaleidoscopic plates from his grandmother’s collection. The Daily Fix’s food is fabulous. It specialises in pancakes, including savoury ones crowned with succulent smoked duck and sweetly luscious ones laced with pandan (screwpine) leaf extract, coupled with coconut and gula melaka (palm sugar). The French toast succeeds in being
both crispy and fluffy, with a beautiful balance of flavours that rivals Kuala Lumpur’s top café temptations. The story of another new venue, Kaya-kaya Café (facebook.com/ kayakayacafelol), is a tribute to Malacca’s allure. Kuala Lumpur resident K.C. Choong had long been a frequent visitor to Malacca when he stayed last year at a Jonker Walk guesthouse whose owners had a vacant space nearby. K.C. found out and decided to collaborate with them to create Kaya-kaya, a cavernous café where customers can relax on rattan chairs and recycled wood-and-metal furniture while marvelling at a two-storey-high mural of multilingual definitions for the word kaya. Kaya means ‘wealth’ in Malay, and the café’s name is meant to convey a feeling of richness in its patrons’ lives, relationships and food. For a dose of decadence, Kayakaya offers a one-of-a-kind ‘Malacca Elvis’ – a pancake stack that combines Elvis Presley’s favourite ingredients of bananas and peanut butter with Malacca’s kaya, a sugary jam thickened with coconut milk and egg yolks. “We want customers to come here for a getaway, to eat and drink and feel like they’ve escaped from the world outside for a few hours,” K.C. says. This current boom in Malacca’s café business emerged in 2014, but the trickle of tourists has steadily swelled ever since UNESCO declared the state capital a World Heritage Site in 2008, says Joseph Chia of Calanthe Art Café
(facebook.com/calanthe.melaka). Calanthe is a hugely respected pioneering café, having recently marked its 10th anniversary. Opened by a band of close-knit friends who went to school together, Calanthe remains one of Malacca’s warmest and most welcoming hangouts, specialising in different types of coffee roasted in each of Malaysia’s 13 states. “Our main objective is to promote an appreciation for our own Malaysian coffee,” Joseph says, noting that some Malaysian states have unique blends of coffee mixed with margarine, salt or even wheat flour. Calanthe is also the ideal stop to refuel with a lunch of deliciously hearty local recipes like turmeric-tinged nasi lemak (coconut milk rice with a yellow hue) and laksa, a bowl of thin noodles in a mildly spicy coconut milk gravy with tofu puffs, fishcakes and beansprouts. As Malacca’s scene matures, increasingly ambitious eateries are also taking root. In June 2015, Plat Kitchen (facebook.com/platkitchen) launched in the Taman Melaka Raya commercial enclave, founded by Roland Tey and Danny Kho, who envision a venue that encompasses food and culture. “We want Plat Kitchen to be a place where people can gather not just for great meals but also for events that focus on art and design,” says Roland. He and Danny plan to organise talks, exhibitions and workshops involving creative professionals from KL and elsewhere; they also hope to open a space for homestay accommodation above Plat Kitchen to complement their café. Plat Kitchen’s menu reflects a masterful medley of cross-border influences. Danny’s shakshouka is a robust combination of creamy baked eggs with chickpeas, mushrooms, grilled tomatoes

and a juicy, herb-laced sausage. The café also promises a ravishing stew of white wine-infused chicken with couscous and rocket leaves, as well as pasta that’s tantalisingly topped with pandan chicken (hand-wrapped in screwpine leaves) and tossed in sambal hebi (shrimp chilli paste that relies on Roland’s grandmother’s aromatic lemongrass recipe). Malacca’s now-thriving landscape has even lured veteran chefs like Ghazali Hashim, who became the executive chef at five-star boutique hotel Casa del Rio Melaka (casadelrio-melaka.com) in March 2015, after two decades of working in other cities in Malaysia and the Maldives. Casa del Rio Melaka showcases one of the state’s most distinctively romantic sites at its flagship restaurant, The River Grill, perched beside the state’s main river. Diners can watch small, tourist-
filled boats leisurely cruise by, sometimes followed by rowers in racing vessels, while they feast on River Grill’s upmarket offerings of Black Angus steaks, tuna tataki with ginger shoyu dressing, and smoked salmon prepared at the customer’s tableside. “Malacca is a special state,” Ghazali says. “I’ve visited and eaten at many places here, and I can assure travellers that their experience in Malacca will be genuinely memorable.”

he value and volume of property transactions in Malaysia will likely stabilise this year – after a surprise increase in 2014 – as the rising cost of living compounds earlier measures taken by the government to cool speculation in the market. The government’s implementation of a 6 percent Goods and Services Tax (GST) in April this year, combined with a weaker Malaysian currency and lower commodity prices, have taken a toll on buyer sentiment, industry watchers say. “The property market has softened not just due to the implementation of GST but also due to the Ringgit’s (Malaysian currency) low exchange rate, tighter financial measures and affordability of housing,” said Tan Sri Dato’ Abdul Rahim Rahman, Executive Chairman of Rahim & Co International Property Consultants. Malaysia introduced the GST as part of its overall tax reform programme aimed at making the country’s taxation system more efficient, effective, transparent, and
business friendly, but above all, as a stable source of revenue for the government. “Although we remain positive about the longer-term fundamentals of the residential property sector on the back of strong affordability and low supply growth, the shorter-term outlook is subdued,” said Terence Wong, Head of Research at CIMB Malaysia. “Due to the high household-debt-toGDP ratio, we believe the government is unlikely to relax the cooling measures anytime soon,” he said, adding that additional measures to further curb speculative activities are possible. Nevertheless, some bright spots were noted in the first quarter of the year, when high profile transactions were recorded both for residential and commercial projects. Among these were the successful sales of embassy land belonging to the German and French governments in the city centre for reportedly close to RM1 billion (USD265 millon). “We believe with the weak Ringgit

priced below RM500,000 (USD133,000) will remain robust. Developers with a big landbank such as Mah Sing Group, MCT Group and LBS Bina Group have, in their pipelines, plans to build more affordable housing this year to meet the supply shortfall for this income group, notes Tan Sri Abdul Rahim. In 2014, property transaction volumes rose 0.7 percent to 384,023 units from the previous year despite fears cooling measures will have an impact on deals. Of the total volume, residential transactions were up by 0.4 percent at 247,251 units, while agriculture and commercial property volumes increased by 2 percent and 3.6 percent to 72,104 units and 35,528 units, respectively. Meanwhile, transaction values rose 7 percent to a new high of RM162.97 billion, with residential transactions up by 13.9 percent at RM82.06 billion, representing 50 percent of the total transaction value. “We had expected the appreciation of house prices to slow down to mid-tohigh single digits in 2014 but this was not the case as prices still rose a strong 10.7 percent,” said CIMB’s Wong. “This could be due to the still lacklustre (home) supply growth of 2.3 percent and the market already pricing in GST ahead of implementation,” he added. Home prices in key property markets – Klang Valley, Johor and Penang – appreciated in double digits, while Penang prices rallied by 15 percent for the second straight year.

and relatively cheap land prices in prime locations in Kuala Lumpur, there will be continued interest from long-term investors to invest in the city, especially in view of the impending high-speed rail link between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur,” said Lai Voon Hon, Group Managing Director of Ireka Corp Bhd. Echoing Lai, Tan Sri Abdul Rahim said property transactions are expected to resume its growth momentum next year, especially in the affordable residential segment, as demand from the country’s young population and urban migration is expected to outstrip supply. “The property market is expected to stabilise and show signs of slower but steady growth this year. Prices are still expected to rise but at a more gentle curve. This is a temporary slowdown. We believe the market will normalise and resume its (growth) momentum in 2016,” he said. Likewise, properties in well-designed enclaves or townships in good locations that provide landscaped green spaces, good infrastructure, easy accessibility to highways and roads, good security, and business and social amenities are well sought after. A prime example of this is the multi award-winning DesaPark City, where its masterplan is anchored on design excellence and quality. “Sales have been extremely gratifying. I credit this to our unwavering commitment to a holistic development for a better quality of life for our residents. This requires not just building well but also the adoption of a strong maintenance culture, and a willingness to allocate resources to beautify the community,” said Lee Liam Chye, Group Chief Executive Officer of Perdana ParkCity Sdn Bhd, the master developer of Desa ParkCity. Only a 30 minute drive from the city centre, Desa ParkCity is admired for its leafy, pedestrian-friendly, well-kept and beautiful public places, a unique selling point that has earned it a loyal following. If you are a foreigner wishing to retire or stay for long periods in Malaysia, check out the very attractive long-term stay visa programme offered by the government. Called the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme, it offers a renewable, ten-year, multiple entry visa for qualified applicants, and various other privileges, including home ownership in one’s own name. Desa Parkcity is an oasis that provides a safe, peaceful and enjoyable community that I love coming home too. As an American, it reminds me of Southern California in the overall atmosphere of the community.

the importance of nature to the health of the community. Over the course of the past 13 years, the development of homes in Desa ParkCity has been gradually phased with the completion of The Waterfront Neighborhood Mall, The ParkCity Club, the ParkCity Medical Centre and the International School. At the heart of every development phase is a conscious and unrelenting effort to sustain a lifestyle entwined with greenery. This kind of master-planned integration is only possible when the developer is able to control the development of the entire township. But even more importantly, is the unwavering
commitment of the developer to the ideals of providing homes that enhance the happiness of its residents. Providing a luxurious lifestyle within a secured landscaped environment takes a strong culture of maintenance. According to its Group CEO Mr. Lee Liam Chye, who has been with Perdana ParkCity Sdn Bhd, the master developer, since the inception of Desa ParkCity, the success of Desa ParkCity can be measured by the number of its repeat buyers for its recent projects. Come and see it for yourself! Wherever you may travel around the world, you can’t find a more desirable home to come home to.
2. CENTRAL PARK AND LAKE/GREEN SPACES – open, clean and active area with wide sidewalks and lots of beautifully landscaped space where families, including dogs, can exercise, play and socialise freely. 3. ACCESSIBILITY OF CRITICAL SERVICES – great International School in the community, along with The Waterfront Neighborhood Mall, The ParkCity Club and quality healthcare, so our family rarely has to venture out into the traffic of the city. 4. DEVELOPER COMMITMENT to continually invest to build and maintain a world-class environment for people to live. 5. For Sherson Lian, one has to be a picky eater in order to cook better Text Tan Lee Kuen Photos SooPhye
S
herson Lian comes from the school of hard knocks. Selftaught, he had his start in his mother's café kitchen in Kuala Lumpur, peeling copious amounts of garlic and onion. But from the chores came an appreciation for the culinary craft and a lasting aptitude for hard work, a trait to see him through his career as a chef and television host. "That opened my eyes to a new perspective in life out of the system. It was then I realised that if you work hard you'd be as successful as you want to be and no one can be in your way," says Sherson. From the family kitchen, he worked his way through local hotels and cafés. At one point, he was the owner of Paradise Corner in Kuala Lumpur, a stint where he cut his teeth at managing an F&B business. But Sherson's rise to fame came when he was approached by a television producer to host the programme 5 Rencah 5 Rasa, where he introduced multiple recipes using simple Malaysian
ingredients. Turns out Sherson was a talent in front of the camera. With his enthusiasm and easy approach to food, he had all the necessary ingredients for working on a food programme. From simple home cooking to elaborate five-course dinners, Sherson is an adept Jack of all trades and a versatile host. "My message is that everyone can cook and that cooking is fun, exciting and it brings people together," he says of his television persona. He describes his personal cooking style as rebellious, fun and instinctive, a product of observation and self-experiments in the kitchen. "Most of my instinct was developed as I followed the cooks around me. I learnt a lot from them. Also, my dad is a very picky eater and that made all of

SHERSON'S SIGNATURE DISHES:
Hokkaido scallop with smoked cauliflower and matcha puree served with truffle crumbs and nori
The Hokkaido scallop is one of my favourite ingredients. It speaks purity and decadence in its original form. In pairing that dish, one must be careful not to overpower its delicate sweetness. The cauliflower puree is soft to the palate; by lightly smoking the cauliflower, it gives another dimension and complexity to the flavour. Adding the crumble just gives it texture. I always love a variety of textures on a plate.
Bak kut teh beef ribs, with enoki mushrooms wrapped with bean curd skin
If people can change their perception that bak kut teh can be made with various kinds of meat, then I think many can enjoy it.
Foie gras with prune poached pear, citrus segments, ulam raja and reduction of the poaching liquid as a drizzle
We Malaysians love our sweet and sour flavours. With this dish I've put together the sweet and sour elements with the sweet poached pear and sour citrus segments. The drizzle was infused with kaffir lime leaves to give it the Asian aroma. The ulam raja as the king of Malaysian ‘salads’ adds a sharp young mango note. And finally, a touch of lime to bring everything together.
us picky too. And when you're picky with your food, you naturally cook better food because you always have to please yourself first before serving others." An Asian Food Channel chef, Sherson has several programmes under his belt including Reality Bites and Great Dinners Around the World. For the latter, Sherson and three other Asian chefs whipped up meals for guests the world over, pairing food with spirits. "Cooking for high-profile guests such as the Duke of Argyll in Scotland and his honourable guests was one of our main highlights," reminisces Sherson. Following the completion of the show, Sherson and his co-host Johnny Fua set up Cookery Chemistry Solution to handle all aspects of the food business – from restaurant set-ups and food consultancy to shows and events across Asia. The cooking partners helped to set up Elegantology, a fashion eatery, the day-today running of which was turned into a
programme called Reality Bites. Sherson has since been the host and judge for Amazing Food Challenge: Fun in the Philippines. His next television outing will be on a new Asian Food Channel show called Family Kitchen with Sherson, which will feature his family members on the show with him. So what does it take to be a successful television host? "For me, it was being myself; the person I am that is passionate about food and sharing it with people. I think that applies to anything really. Be passionate, stay real, honest, work hard and play harder because when you play is when you get creative. Having that balance in life is important," he says. More adventure is in store for this enterprising chef. Sherson is opening a restaurant by year-end, inspired by the farm-to-table culture. "It will be more laidback with simple cooking and honest food," says Sherson.

JASLYN CAKES (jaslyncakes.com)
When Jaslyn Rangson graduated with an Economics degree in the UK, the finance job market was depressed. She took it as a sign to embark on a life-long passion – baking cakes, and enrolled in Le Cordon Bleu London to conquer the art. “I learnt the importance of getting the basics right at the school. Once you master that, the world is your oyster. Everything is open to improvisation and you can create and tweak as you please. So while our cakes are classics like butter cakes and chocolate chip cookies, we try to make them really well and hopefully, the best versions of themselves!” says Jaslyn, who uses organic eggs and flour for her cakes. She started supplying cakes from home before opening a pop-up cake stand in
local café, Wondermama. Reception was good, and she eventually opened a tiny little shop in Bangsar with partners to sell her sweet and tasty wares. From this little shop of delights, you can expect melt-in-your-mouth cheesecakes, luscious butterscotch blondies and airy madeleines along with sweet essentials such as chocolate peanut butter and chocolate ganache cakes.

We have a predilection for family-run, hole-in-the-wall shops such as Whisk Espresso Bar & Bake Shop in 1 Utama. With its homespun cakes and appearance, it is a cosy and required pitstop for cake and coffee. “Mom has been baking for the family since we were kids. Her speciality was our grandma’s marble cake and her special butter cakes. She would do all the cakes by hand without the help of any mixers or machines,” says Emma Khalid. She recounts that when she and her siblings, Nora and Azlan, bought her a Kitchen Aid mixer, it remained untouched for a year. “She refused to change her techniques as she felt it would alter the cakes. But once the box was opened, we started cranking out baked goods and experimenting with

The cakes are baked fresh daily, usually selling out by day’s end.

Their utterly delightful sweet treats include favourites like the Salted Caramel and Chocolate Cake, Berry Sue pavlova and chia seed pudding, dressed up to food magazine standards. Cake Jalan Tiung grew from a parttime hobby to a full-time business for former bankers and couple Nur Shafinaz Abdul Rahman and Hidzad Lahuree. Part of their selling point is the use of quality ingredients such as Belgian Callebaut chocolate and a daily supply of fresh fruits, as well as memorable flavours that last long after the last bite.

Elvis Presley loved his banana and peanut butter toast. When Sophia Foo of Frost & Flourish had her first taste of the treat in Melbourne, she instantly understood why and that it was only natural that it should become a cake. The King is a decadent confection of banana cake filled with chocolate-covered bananas and smothered with peanut butter frosting, and a signature for this self-taught home baker who is currently supplying her cakes to cafés around town. “I owe my baking career to my mum who was an enthusiastic baker throughout my childhood. She always got me to help out with simple things like egg washing pastries and lining cake tins. They were little things but I always got so excited about being rewarded with delicious freshly baked treats,” says Sophia, who baked as a stress-reliever while at university. Other notables in Sophia’s repertoire are the kaya toast cake, blueberry lemon curd shortcake and Durian Snow, a vanilla sponge filled and coated with durian cream. Because her mom is diabetic, Sophia is accustomed to making low sugar cakes while still packing lots of flavour. However, it’s not all smooth baking. The single bane of her cake career is the alltime everybody’s favourite chocolate cake, “I’ve been struggling for over a year to come up with a good chocolate cake. Lim Cheng Cheng of Swich has a passion for cakes. “I would have cakes before a meal. I had cakes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And as a snack in between,” she says. So perhaps it was inevitable that she should put aside a thriving career as a lawyer to make the life switch of opening a cake shop. “I wanted to spend more quality time with my kids, and F&B was the only thing I could do that didn’t require me to go back to university,” says the self-taught baker. Swich cakes take full advantage of local ingredients and seasonal fruits, resulting in unusual but delicious flavours like Gula Melaka Strawberry Shortcake, Cendol Cheesecake, Cempedak Lamington and Mangosteen Cake. “We try to create cakes that incorporate local fruits and flavours that Malaysians are used to but seldom encounter as cakes,” says Cheng Cheng. All the cakes start with a good base of quality ingredients like Valrhona chocolate, Callebaut chocolate and French butter. These days, Cheng Cheng’s preoccupation has shifted from legalese to cake recipes. “I went through a phase where I was creating a new cake flavour or combination of flavours each week. When I ran out of ideas, I’d just ask my staff, friends or anyone I meet what their favourite dessert or cake flavours are, and then start imagining how to make a Swich version of it.”

Rimy Azizi Abdul Karim

SPIN DOCTOR
An artisan ensures the game of gasing, once a popular pastime, survives the test of time
Bentuk gasing berbeza dari negeri ke negeri Gasings of different origins
Harapan Rimy semoga gasing tidak hanya dijumpai di muzium kelak Rimy hopes the gasing will not just be found in museums in the future
In one graceful yet controlled motion, Rimy Azizi Abdul Karim flings the spinning top to the ground, where it lands with a whip-like crack before gyrating fluidly for the next few minutes. A well-made gasing can spin up to two hours, he tells me. Top spinning, whose Malay-language name was derived from kayu (wood) and pusing (spin), is believed to have been brought to the Malay Archipelago courtesy of Middle Eastern traders. Quickly picked up as a post-rice harvest men’s game, the advent of video games and other modern distractions has threatened its popularity as a leisurely pursuit, but not if artisans like Rimy can help it. Rimy hails from several generations of gasing makers. After catching the gasing bug from his father Abdul Karim, he travelled nationwide, including to the Malay heartland of the East Coast and the southern state of Johor, to apprentice with the best gurus in the trade –eight, no less. His passion for gasing deepened as he realised “it is a beautiful game, rich in history and stories”. In Malaysia alone, over 100 types of gasing are in existence. Even from Rimy’s prized personal collection, one can discern the richness of cultural information in each gasing’s characteristics, from name and shape to type of wood. Gasing jantung is derived from the shape of a banana heart, a popular ingredient in Malay cooking. Gasing talam dua muka, a dualfaced top, refers to a famous Malay proverb about the treacherous nature of humans, while lang laut is inspired by the sea. Making a good gasing begins with the search for hard, malleable (liat) wood; cengal, ciku and mangrove are popular species. Traditionally, the materials were
obtained from rivers and forests but the scarcity and high cost of raw wood prompted Rimy and other gasing-makers to fall on an unlikely source: recycling. Wooden beams from old kampung houses are sufficiently dry and seasoned; the cost is cheaper by 40 percent as well. Using an iron axe, the wood is cut into 15cm cubes and dried out before each block is handhewn into a gasing’s curvy shape. A spinning machine is used to drill a nail or axis into the centre; the extra weight prolongs the spin, and then it is chiselled to immaculate smoothness before being sandpapered and spray-painted for a shiny finish. On a good day, Rimy can make up to 20 in his top production workshop in Kampung Cheng. Since going full-time in 2007, his company, Gasing Lagenda Enterprise, has worked closely with the Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation (Kraftangan Malaysia) to produce tops as gifts and souvenirs as well as for competitive use. Melaka, also known as Malacca, is renowned for gasing pangkah, a highly skilled game where contestants smash their spinning tops against those spun by rival team members. Apart from making tops for his own company, Rimy runs short gasingmaking courses and performs demonstrations in hopes of generating public interest, and eventually, training successors. His biggest coup to date is a 24hour gasing competition in 2012 that made it to the Malaysian Book of Records. Rimy occasionally employs acrobatic tricks to attract crowds. I’m caught between amusement, admiration and alarm of injury as he juggles between using his forehead and finger as a spinning pad. Gimmicky or otherwise, his showmanship has impressed at least two members of the younger generation who are his target audience: his children, Adam Tuah, 3, and Nor Umairah, 5, are pretty mean throwers. “I don’t want spinning tops to end up in a museum one day. My biggest dream is for the game to go beyond ceremonial use, and make a comeback in the day-to-day lives of ordinary people,” he added.

FURIOUS NUMBERS
1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 3, 7 The chronological order of the seven feature-length movies
How a cult car race thriller spawned one of the biggest movie franchises of all time Over the course of seven films, The Fast And The Furious franchise has gone from a cheap-thrills genre movie about the lives of underground street racers to huge budget, globe-spanning blockbusters complete with outrageously extravagant action sequences. With its most recent instalment, Furious 7, becoming the fourth highest grossing film ever, taking approximately $1.5 billion USD at the worldwide box office, we look at the numbers behind the recordbreaking franchise that left everyone’s expectations in its dust.

TOMORROW’S GOT TALENT There’s no avoiding the limelight for Tomorrowland star, Britt Robertson ‘Don’t screw it up’, was the career advice George Clooney playfully gave his Tomorrowland co-star Britt Robertson following the release of their Disney sci-fi adventure. In the film, Robertson plays a young science enthusiast who is recruited by an irritable inventor (Clooney) to go to a glittering, utopic, alternate dimension where people are pushing the limits of futuristic possibilities. The movie marks the 25-year-old’s first major role after almost ten years earning her stripes on TV, most notably in coming of age drama Life Unexpected and sci-fi series Under The Dome. But with Tomorrowland being Disney’s flagship release of the summer, the South Carolina native had better prepare for some serious stardom; something she’s not quite ready to do. Witty and frankly spoken, Robertson would rather keep her share of anonymity rather than become a household name: ‘I look at someone like Natalie Portman, who I think is extremely talented, but she’s in the limelight so much that she probably can’t go to the grocery store’, she says. ‘I still go to the grocery store in my pyjamas and no one cares!’
092_Select_Aug2015_Editorial 02.indd 94
With co-star Clooney having arguably made the jump from TV to film more successfully than anyone else, who better than ER’s former heartthrob resident pediatrician to advise Robertson on her next steps. ‘Don’t just ride on this movie and hope it does something good for you,’ he told her, ‘get some momentum’. And momentum is what she’s got, with Nicholas Sparks’ romantic weepie The Longest Ride already in theatres, and an upcoming drama opposite Eddie Murphy in the works, Robertson will have to embrace her newfound fame, and get used to dressing up before buying her fruit and veg.
TAKING IT SERIOUSLY Upon hearing that James Franco and Jonah Hill are starring in a new film together, you’d be forgiven for assuming it’s a comedy. With both actors being Saturday Night Live veterans with a string of hit comedies between them, it’s easy to forget that the pair have each been nominated for Academy Awards for dramatic roles. In their latest outing, True Story, the duo play it straight in a dramatisation of the real relationship between a disgraced investigative journalist (Hill) and a prisoner accused of murder who has mysteriously assumed his identity (Franco). If you can get past the expectation that either actor might suddenly break out into jokes and laughter, underneath you’ll find a taut and tense drama with plenty of mystery, mind games and not an adolescent gag in sight. NO ORDINARY CHEF His chef’s whites are always black, he smokes cigars, he has tattoos, he calls himself the Demon Chef, and he’s one of only two selftaught chefs who have ever been rewarded a Michelin star – Alvin Leung is a true food industry trailblazer. Born in London in 1961, Alvin spent his childhood in Ontario, Canada, where he worked as an engineer before moving to Hong Kong to set up his first restaurant, Bo Innovation. In Hong Kong he quickly gained a reputation for his ‘X-Treme Chinese’ cuisine which includes dishes using experimental combinations producing often controversial concoctions. On his own TV show, Maverick Chef, Alvin tours six Asian

Lucious Lucious Lyon, played by Academy Award nominee Terrence Howard, is the CEO of Empire Entertainment, and has long-reigned supreme in the music industry. But a medical diagnosis expedites his plans to choose which of his three sons will inherit his throne – all while fending off a vengeful ex-wife.
2
Cookie Taraji P. Henson, famed for her work in The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button and Person Of Interest, takes on the role of Cookie Lyon, the former wife of Lucious who is hell-bent on taking back her share of the company after spending 17 years in jail for running the drugs that financed his early career.

3
Jamal The calm, compassionate and wise middle son, Jamal, played by Jussie Smollett, is a musical prodigy who shies away from the spotlight. A perfect candidate for the throne, but the problem is Lucious can’t bring himself to support Jamal’s homosexuality.
4
Andre Playing the role of the eldest and bipolar son, Andre, is Trai Byers. Wharton-educated with a brilliant business mind, the power-hungry CFO of Empire Entertainment lacks the charisma that his father is looking for in his successor.
5
Hakeem Played by newcomer Bryshere Y. Gray, Hakeem is the youngest in the Lyon crew, and Lucious’ favourite. A talented rapper on the rise and a spoiled playboy obsessed over fame, he will have to decide what is more important: family or stardom.

ONLINE TO ONSTAGE Korean-American YouTube music sensation, David Choi, talks exclusively to Select while on his latest Asia Tour What do you like best about visiting Malaysia? The food, it’s delicious, the best in Asia – Nasi Lemak is my favourite. Plus, I really like the people here, every time I come here I make more friends. What inspired you when you wrote your new album, Stories Of You’s And Me? A lot of people. When I finished the album, I wrote down the song titles and next to each song was a name of the person who inspired me to write it. What is your song writing process like? When it comes to my own music, I’ll wait for inspiration. I don’t force it because I want it to be natural. But there are also times when a company will ask me to write a song, like a happy song about the iPhone, so then I need to craft the song. I can do both.
fun instrument, an instrument that makes people happy. How do your collaborations with fellow YouTubers usually come about? Usually I just ask them or they ask me. Or someone pairs us. But personality comes first. If we get on, I’ll say ‘let’s do something together’. Does the classical music training you received as a kid help your music now? It does. I used to hate classical music as a kid. What kid likes to listen to classical music, right? But now, it’s one of my favourite genres. I use a lot of strings, so having been part of an orchestra helps that a lot.
How do you pick which artist’s songs you want to cover? Sometimes I’ll choose popular songs, but I obviously have to like it. If it’s catchy and I like it, sometimes I’ll just do it to get it out of my system.
Where do you see yourself going as an artist from here on out? I see myself doing more shows, promote this album more, and plan more shows around Asia. And then, write another album and do the same thing again!
Are there any particular musicians who inspired your ukulele playing? Well, my favourite ukulele player is Jake Shimabukuro – he’s the best in the world. I don’t exactly strive to be like him, but it’s a

WHIPPING BACK THE CLOCK British rock band Blur – most famous for their 1990s Britpop anthems – have released their first album in over a decade, even though it nearly didn’t exist. New album, The Magic Whip, was conceived while the band were stranded in Hong Kong for five days in May 2013 after a festival appearance in Japan was cancelled at the last minute. The band spent the days in an impromptu studio session, laying down some tracks to pass the time, but they didn’t initially think what they recorded was useable. Over a year later the
092_Select_Aug2015_Editorial 02.indd 96
band decided to revisit the recordings, discovering that they had enough to make an album. The result is a triumphant comeback with a sound reminiscent of their heyday but with an added maturity and range that could be attributed to the band’s lengthy time apart. Described as ‘sci-fi folk’ by guitarist Graham Coxon, the record bounces from quirky electronica to broody grunge with some reggae-soul thrown in. With The Magic Whip, Blur have turned back the clock with an eclectic offering that rivals any of their greatest hits. The Magic Whip is playing on board. See page 115 for more details

POSTCARD
GARDEN VIEW Get refreshed at one of Malaysia’s most popular weekend getaways
PHOTO COURTESY OF BOH PLANTATIONS SDN BHD
Text Zurien Onn
Up in the mountain ranges of Malaysia, about 1,500 metres above sea level, sits the district of Cameron Highlands, a popular tourist spot that was once a cold-climate refuge for colonial Europeans escaping the heat of early 20thcentury Malaya. Following Sir William Cameron’s suggestion to turn the area into a resort in 1885, the ‘Camerons’ was developed 40 years later by Sir Hugh Low to include a hill station, retreat bungalows and agricultural farms growing
cinchona, fruits, vegetables, coffee and tea. These days a stop at these farms is a must. Check out the strawberry farms or the BOH Tea Factory and Tea Centre in Sungei Palas, where after a tour of how tea goes from cultivation to cup, visitors can enjoy a hot cuppa while taking in the glorious views of the garden from the balcony of the visitor centre, Tea’ria. boh.com.my
