Beautiful Mosques
Mesmerising Art
In Malaysia, mosques are more than a place of worship – they showcase the country’s rich culture, art and heritage. Buildings often blend Malay, Arabic, Moorish and even Victorian English influences into their designs, making them a true spectacle to behold. Check out our list of seven beautiful mosques around Malaysia that you should visit.
Artist Stephanie Walberer, better known as Mrs Colorberry, creates beautiful resin art and furniture inspired by geodes – naturally occurring rocks lined on the inside with gems and crystals. Using resin, paint, glitter and sometimes real gems, she pours, paints and turns blank canvases into stunning, sparkling pieces.

goingplacesmagazine.com | 8 | August 2018
Dear Guests, Welcome onboard. The month of August is significant to all Malaysians as we celebrate our Independence on the 31st of August. If you are travelling in Malaysia during this time, you will notice our national flag on most buildings, monuments and homes. Flying the national flag is one of the simplest ways for Malaysians to exhibit their patriotism and passion for the country. Like all Malaysians, I am proud of our heritage and how far we have come as a nation. Malaysia is a melting pot of racial and ethnic diversity – various communities comprising Malays, Chinese, Indians, Ibans, Kadazans, Dayaks, Dusuns, and many others, live harmoniously, share common values and identify not as their ethnicities would dictate but as Malaysians. Our unique hospitality and unity have become a hallmark of our identity. These unique values form the basis of the same Malaysian Hospitality (MH) that is synonymous with Malaysia Airlines. Malaysia Airlines strives daily to make each flight special for our guests not just onboard, but from the moment you browse through our website, check in at one of our counters, enter our lounges and board our aircraft. It is about knowing and anticipating our guests’ needs. Over the last few months, teams across the organisation have also been working hard to improve and enhance our service delivery and offerings to our guests with reduced mobility. A special unit called Priority Guest Management has been formed to improve the airline’s services in managing the needs of our customers with reduced mobility. To-date, over 2,699 of our 5,200 front-liners have undergone Disability Equality Training (DET) and Disability Related Services Training (DRST). We have also recently unveiled our In-flight Safety Cards in Braille on our entire fleet and I am proud that we are the first Malaysian airline to do so. We have much more in store for all guests and will be rolling out more initiatives in the coming months to offer our travellers an enhanced Customer Experience. In all of this, we recognise and acknowledge the importance of staying in touch with our customers. Our brand, after all, is never what we think of it, but always about what our customers say about it. Your feedback, therefore, matters to us as it helps us serve you better. We have made it much easier for you to rate your experience and share your input with us in real-time through the introduction of the MHfeedback application. Please use this application to tell us not just what we are doing right, but what we can do better to make your journey with us more memorable. I take this opportunity to wish all Malaysians Selamat Menyambut Hari Kemerdekaan and to our other guests visiting Malaysia, Selamat Datang. It is my sincere wish that you have a pleasant and enjoyable MH experience on Malaysia Airlines no matter where you are flying. ■

A Taste Of
Kuala Lumpur
A new gastronomic hub to discover: Appetites welcome Travel – it allows for endless opportunities to discover new destinations, new cultures, new experiences, and most importantly – delicious new cuisine. At the newly opened Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur, located in the bustling Golden Triangle neighborhood, the iconic hotel brand has once again outdone itself with a collection of over-the-top culinary experiences that are sure to please the appetite. Shying away from the ordinary – or rather, menus that reflect a non-hotel-like approach, epicureans are invited to discover a new taste of Kuala Lumpur.
A culinary destination like no other, Chef Junious notes guests can explore offerings ranging from authentic Cantonese prepared by award-winning Chef Jimmy Wong to all-day dining at Curate where theatrical performances take center stage, or savor exotic Arabic creations that sizzle a la carte on the rooftop pool deck. No matter the choice, Chef Junious guarantees the senses will be awakened, and definitely ignited. To complement any great meal, Chef Junious also recommends sipping one of Bar Trigona’s artisanal cocktails, where mixology is an art form.
Housed in the city’s most stylish skyscraper, Four Seasons has quickly established itself as Kuala Lumpur’s new dining darling. And rightfully so – the hotel brings with it an arsenal of innovative culinary concepts, including a new breed of dynamic master chefs making a name for themselves on the scene. Among them is Junious Dickerson, Executive Chef and visionary extraordinaire who is the mastermind behind the four feastworthy restaurants and two swanky lounges. “Our team has cultivated an explosive new dining scene, paying close attention to every aspect and enticing the guest with a full sensory experience – from the dynamic flavors of the locally sourced ingredients to the music and lighting – even to the alluring aromas coming from the kitchen – it’s the perfect recipe for an unforgettable dining experience,” explains Chef Junious.
“Malaysia has some of the finest ingredients and unique
traditions – and equally as impressive is the incredible amount of local farmers and purveyors, all of which have influenced our menus.”-- Chef Junious
Whether your palette is craving something more traditional, or daring – even something on the spicier side, the six distinct venues offer a new journey to explore. Bring an appetite and a sense of wonder. Dine, drink and discover the city’s hot new gastronomic hub heating up the culinary scene. ■

EDITOR’S NOTE
lorises were initially targeted for their meat and as traditional medicine, but videos of them as cute, supposedly domesticated, animals have since made it trendy to own one. Young lorises are snatched from their mothers in the wild, have their teeth extracted without anaesthesia, and sold on social media and messaging apps to people who don’t know how to look after them. The illegal pet trade has fuelled their extinction in the forests, and now, all eight species of the slow loris are considered as threatened. If you come across videos or photos of pet slow lorises on the Internet, do not “like” or share them. The videos are the biggest threat to their survival. If you know of people who have them as pets, educate them. Tell them to hand the animals over to rehabilitation centres that can return them to the wild. You’d really be doing your part to help save them.

Let me ask you this: How would you feel having to lift your hands for someone to tickle you incessantly? Would you enjoy it? Or how about watching someone being tickled? Would you find it cute and share it with your friends on social media so they could watch it too? Videos of wide-eyed slow lorises, a small primate, being tickled, getting brushed or clutching cocktail umbrellas looking cute and adorable have gone viral since the first one was shared online in 2009. In that video, a female loris named Sonya was being tickled while lifting her arms over her head. Her owner says she loves the tickles but U.K.-based International Animal Rescue says it’s a sign the animal is distressed. Up until then, not many people knew what a slow loris was. Now, they’re famous for all the wrong reasons. In our story ‘Facing Extinction For Being Cute’ on pages 60-62, TRAFFIC, which deals with illegal wildlife trade issues, tells us
Nepal welcomed a record 940,000 visitors last year. Nearly one third are mountain climbers and trekkers attracted by the promise of dramatic sceneries in the Himalayas. The Everest Base Camp, the Annapurna Circuit, and the Langtang Trek are the three most popular trekking destinations and consequently, the most crowded during the in-season period. In our cover story this month, writer Dave Stamboulis offers an alternative, advocating the less crowded Manaslu circuit with a Tsum Valley trek thrown in. Be forewarned, though, that word has spread that Manaslu will soon take over Annapurna in terms of popularity due to its diverse and secluded trail of varying altitudes. Turn to pages 3641 to see the breathtaking imagery Dave has captured from his recent trip there. Closer to home on pages 46-51, the fascinating images of the Bajau Laut community, which lives off the coast of Semporna in the East Malaysian state of Sabah, are a feast for the eyes. Captured by Malaysian adventurer, photographer and filmmaker Zahariz Khuzaimah, who spent some time living with the sea gypsies, the nomads live their entire lives at sea, coming to land only if absolutely necessary. Living such simple lives, it’s no wonder they’re said to be the happiest people on the planet! Speaking of happy, Malaysians will celebrate our 61st year of Independence on 31 August. Still a relatively young nation, we’ve much to celebrate and look forward to. After all, we recently voted for change, which could mean only one thing, and that is, the desire for growth. Kepada semua rakyat Malaysia, Selamat Menyambut Hari Kemerdekaan! Happy Independence Day, Malaysia! ■

Letter Of The Month My first flying experience was in 2013, from Kuantan to KLIA to Guangzhou in China. I was really excited then because since I was a little girl, I have always wanted to travel overseas like my father. Memories of waiting for him at the airport and looking at all his photos taken in other countries, it became my ambition to be like him. My father is a forward thinker. He sent my siblings and me to a Chinese primary school as he wanted his children to have an edge over the other Malay children, and he wanted us to travel around the world to seek the true meaning of Malaysia once we returned from overseas. Since 2013, I have travelled frequently to China, Thailand, Cambodia, Taiwan, Germany, Slovakia and Singapore because of my ability to speak in Mandarin and English, and of course my work requires me to travel a lot. I now know nothing can compare to the Malaysian people, the Malaysian culture and Malaysian food. I am very proud of my country. The one thing I really love when travelling with Malaysia Airlines is the nasi lemak. Super delicious! SITI HAJAR BINTI MANGSOR, Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia

I can still remember vividly the days when I was barely six when mum would hold my hands while I desperately try to run across the tarmac to get on the plane with the red kite. Fast forward a few years, as a Platinum frequent flyer living abroad, nothing excites me more than the aroma of satay at 38,000 feet followed by the Selamat Pulang announcement whenever I touch down at KLIA. Home is where the heart is!. CHONG SIE LUI, Brisbane, Australia
Our family flew to Hong Kong for a vacation in March. We flew with our two daughters, who are eight and two years old. It was an early flight on MH1133 from Penang to Kuala Lumpur, but the journey was made seamless by the hospitality of your staff. Seeing the children asleep as we were boarding, the cabin crew quickly provided us blankets so they could continue to sleep comfortably. The flight to Hong Kong was equally comfortable and seamless. Our two-year-old enjoyed our return flight to Kuala Lumpur the most as she constantly received the attention of the cabin crew. She enjoyed their company so much that she was sad when we landed. We have flown on numerous airlines and none have shown this kind of hospitality previously. We were very satisfied with our flight and will continue to use your services in the future. Thank You, Malaysia Airlines. You have made our vacation extra wonderful!

A New Standard
There’s more Japanese cuisine to explore at J’s Gate Dining Lot 10, which recently welcomed two new restaurants: Mo-Mo Paradise and Osaka Kitchen. The former first opened in Kabukicho, Tokyo in 1993 and gained a reputation for its sukiyaki and shabu-shabu. Osaka Kitchen, on the other hand, is known for signature Osaka dishes such as okonomiyaki, teppanyaki and yakisoba. This takes the number of restaurants at J’s Gate to 15, including ramen shop Kaguraya, yakitori joint Torikin and hotpot specialists Fuji Sakura.
Complete your idyllic Scottish holiday at the rooftop of the luxurious The Glasshouse in Edinburgh’s city centre. Found within the two-acre Rooftop Garden overlooking the historic Calton Hill is the Sipsmith Rooftop Bar, a pop-up gin bar that also offers the Glasshouse Rooftop Picnic set. It includes a specially crafted cocktail and picnic basket filled with fresh Scottish produce and food, including gourmet baguettes, Scotch Egg, and blueberry cheesecake. And when evening comes, have a dram of whisky at The Snug bar, which stocks up an extensive selection of over 100 single malt whiskies, as well as cigars to complement a night of stargazing. If you’re a fan of Jamie Oliver’s fun and rustic take on British food, make your way down to Kingham, Oxfordshire for The Big Feastival. Co-founded with Blur bassist-turned-cheesemaker Alex James, the festival takes place on 24-26 August and brings together top chefs like Marco Pierre White, Mark Hix, and Raymond Blanc to cook up a storm, while performers like Craig David, Basement Jaxx and Clean Bandit are set to entertain the crowd. There will also be pop-up restaurants like Shake Shack and The Cheese Bar Experience as well as cooking workshops and the Friday Night Supper Club, a feast hosted by award-winning restaurant The Ethicurean.
Gastronomes, you can start making those travel plans now that the World's 50 Best Restaurants of 2018 have been named. Claiming the top spot this year is Italy's Osteria Francescana, the Modena-based restaurant that returned to the pinnacle after losing out last year to New York’s Eleven Madison Park, which fell to fourth spot. Closer to home, we have Bangkok’s progressive Indian restaurant Gaggan taking fifth place – the highest Asian restaurant on the list – while Den’s elevated, deeply personal take on Japanese home cooking took the Tokyo restaurant up to 17th place. Down south in Singapore, Chef Julien Royer’s ultra-refined take on modern French food took Odette to 28th spot – not a bad place to start your world food tour.

It has inspired similar events across 120 other cities and several spin-offs, such as Berlin’s Long Night Of The Sciences. Throughout the event, 80 museums will be opening their doors until 2 am – and there’s a convenient shuttle bus system to transport visitors between locations. Besides browsing each venue’s exhibitions, one can also enjoy an array of special events, including talks, music and interactive presentations, making the Long Night Of Museums a night to remember.
Forward Thinking It’s your last chance to catch Afrofuturism at the Tropen Museum in Amsterdam. The exhibition features four contemporary artists: Bob Mũchiri Njenga, Samuel Fosso, Kadara Enyeasi and Osborne Macharia, who, using a variety of mediums from photography to digital collage, explore their hopes and dreams for the future. Modern Perspective The National Gallery of Victoria is presenting a vast 200-piece exhibition of art flown all the way from New York’s Museum of Modern Art. The show, 130 Years of Modern and Contemporary Art, will feature many of the masters of art, such as Vincent van Gogh and Andy Warhol, as well as Asian stars, from Huang Yong Ping to Shigetaka Kurita. The exhibition itself is arranged chronologically into eight thematic sections, highlighting how modern art has developed from the late 19th century through to the modern digital age.
Before his death in November last year, couturier Monsieur Azzedine Alaïa worked alongside the Design Museum in London to curate an exhibition of his work that explored his journey from sculptor to renowned couturier. Alaïa did not adhere to the fashion week schedule and instead worked to his own beat, creating all of his pieces with his own hands. His zest for fashion and the female form led him to become a favourite among celebrities, from Greta Garbo to Rihanna. Rather than being a general overview of his work, Azzedine Alaïa: The Couturier delves into his life and is peppered with handpicked pieces from his early collection in the 1980s, to his last body of work from 2017.

WINDOW OR AISLE
Although I’ve never been to it I know that there‘s a role-playing theme park thing for children called KidZania where they can pretend to work at various jobs like being a dentist, a car mechanic or even a secret agent. It sounds like fun. But I want there to be a version for older people like me called GrandpaZania where I can be grumpy, play my Duran Duran on vinyl records, watch Footloose on VHS and where I don’t have to do Internet banking. In GrandpaZania, I want to be able to sit in a traffic jam, struggle to find parking in order to get to a bank where I want to take a number and wait patiently for an actual human person to do my bank transaction for me. In GrandpaZania, there is no Internet and I want to go there to experience again the thrill of being inconvenienced because that’s how I grew up. Oh dear, I sound like Donald Trump.
goingplacesmagazine.com | 30 | August 2018
When my mother was young, she literally used to go to school with a horse and cart and yet she can work the computer better than me. Well, that’s not entirely true. I’ve spent far too many hours on Skype saying to my mother, “With your mouse move the cursor over the camera icon and then press it.” For my mother a mouse is a rodent, a camera is a camera, an icon is a Russian religious painting and what the hell is a cursor? And what am I pressing again? The mouse! Why would I press a mouse? If I’m lucky I’ll eventually get to see the top of her head. But apart from a few hiccups she’s better on the Internet than me. She can book flights, hotel rooms and even do online banking. I can do none of these things because I get confused and frightened. I mean, it’s money and I don’t want it to disappear down the InterTubes or get caught in the InterWebs (I’ve been told that can happen on my aunties’ Whatsapp group, and that “enzymes” remove rust). I need a professional human banking person to type in the details and finally say, “It’s all done, now can I help you with anything else?” That way I know that everything is alright. Perhaps you can tell, I feel very strongly about this. The other day I needed to do a bank transaction and things didn’t go well. Obviously, I decided to go to the actual bank and take a number. But when I got to the bank, the first thing the lady said was, “Have you tried Internet banking?” “No,” I said, “I want to take a number.” She took me to a tiny booth and put me in front of a computer. “Internet banking,” she said proudly.
Take a
Number
My whole world immediately collapsed and to my everlasting shame I swore, not exactly at her but very much around her. All I can really remember saying was, “Please, just let me take a number.” I decided that I needed to leave and calm down before it all dissolved into the world’s stupidest hostage crisis. I didn’t want to go viral on video as the moron who screamed, “Just give me a number and nobody gets hurt!” To the bank’s credit they eventually understood my special needs and the transaction was dealt with. I apologised to the lady, but she didn’t seem very impressed, and why should she? I mean, what kind of idiot can’t do Internet banking? Me, I’m that idiot and here’s my
membership card to GrandpaZania. Now give me my free coffee and soft-bread sandwich. I have to get with the times. Soon, there won’t be any old-timers like me left and there will only be people who have grown up with nothing but the Internet. I must learn to accept that my ability to programme a VCR or re-spool a cassette tape with a BIC pen will never again be called upon, and that the Flock of Seagulls haircut is never going to come back into fashion (kids, ask your grandparents about pens). So, the next time I need to, I will do my transactions on the Internet and I will revel in the convenience. Perhaps I will never again need to take a number. ■

Explore Langkawi’s UNESCO Geopark with 90 protected caves, waterfalls and mangrove sites, where experts are still debating if there are 92 or 104 islands in the Langkawi Archipelago. Not only are the rocks ancient and fascinating but also the plant communities and the animals living there. Ride the cable car to the summit of Mount Machincang (713m) to admire the views and walk over the rainforest canopy on a sky bridge. Return down the cable car and then climb to Telaga Tujuh Waterfall. Enjoy a half-day mangrove cruise with an experienced eco-guide to admire these tranquil coastal forests that are home to hovering raptors like sea eagles and Brahminy Kites. Head away from the tourist beaches and explore the rice fields around Padang Matsirat on a bicycle.
EVENTS The IRONMAN Malaysia triathlon takes place on 17 November and is set to attract 1,200 athletes who will swim 3.8 kilometres, run 42 kilometres and cycle 182 kilometres in the hope of qualifying for the World Ironman Championship in Kailua Kona Hawaii. Langkawi International Music Festival from 21-22 December will attract performers invited from islands around the world, while the Langkawi International Blues Roots Aseana music festival will be staged on 29-31 December along Pantai Cenang. It’s a great way to bid 2018 goodbye and to welcome the new year.

SLEEP While international hotel chains such as St. Regis, The Westin, RitzCarlton and Four Seasons have properties on the island, several deluxe homegrown hotels such as Meritus Pelangi, The Danna, Berjaya, Dash, Tanjung Rhu and Casa del Mar are just as appealing. Boutique accommodation offers friendly and personalised service. Discover this by checking into Sunset Valley with its beautiful heritage holiday houses in an oasis of peace and calm in the centre of the island. Westernmeets-spice cuisine served in Nam Restaurant in Bon Ton has set the benchmark for fine island food for over a decade (its desserts are divine!).
EAT & DRINK Dine at Fat Cupid, The Fat Frog, Unkaizan, Red Tomato and Gallo Nero (Chef Lorenzo Zecubi’s latest outing). For fantastic Indian fusion food, try Pia’s the Padi, set amid rice fields. WALKING TOURS
Show the folks back home what they missed with a copy of Enchanting Langkawi, a book that provides insightful information and great photos on Langkawi’s history, culture, food and main attractions. Pick up copies from WHSmith at the airport on your way home. Scenic Langkawi was also one of the backdrops chosen by the producers of the 1999 movie Anna and the King of Siam. Starring Jodie Foster and Chow Yun-Fat, the movie of the fictionalised 1944 novel about an English schoolmistress and the King of Siam (now Thailand) could not be filmed in Thailand, so Langkawi was given the opportunity to shine through some beautiful cinematography.
Take a self-guided walk up the 4,270 steps to the summit of Langkawi’s highest mountain, Gunung Raya. Arrange to be picked up at the top or, more sensibly, start at the top and walk down.
NEIGHBOURHOODS The beaches are Langkawi’s biggest attraction with the Pantai Cenang to Pantai Tengah strip, the most popular. It is a linear,
crowded and lively stretch covering a few kilometres with budget accommodation, shops, bars, restaurants and Langkawi’s top attraction, Underwater World, a 2.4-hectare marine and fresh water aquaria housing more than 500 fish species and other underwater life.
The Malaysian Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has always championed Langkawi as an island holiday destination and duty-free port. Langkawi made a lasting impression when he worked here as a medical officer in the 1950s.

Langkawi’s main island is 20 kilometres by 30 kilometres, bigger than Singapore, and is not one for walking around. Hire a car, use taxis or book a ride-sharing service to get from point to point. For the fitter ones, hire a bicycle to get a different perspective of the island.

MONEY TALKS Prices are in Ringgit Malaysia. Larger establishments do accept credit cards too. Some big restaurants may add a 10 percent service charge on spending. Most hotels will change major currencies, as will licensed moneychangers.
BEACH ATTIRE The islanders are modest people so restrict the beachwear to the beach and be more respectful away from the beach, especially at places of worship. Large resorts usually have a smart casual dress code in their restaurants for evening dining.

Been There,
Done That! Meet James Asquith, the youngest person to travel to every country on earth. Interview Julie Goh | Photography courtesy of James Asquith
goingplacesmagazine.com | 34 | August 2018
By the age of 24, James Asquith had done what no one else had, and that is to travel to all 196 sovereign countries in the world. The feat earned him the Guinness World Record for being the youngest person to travel to all sovereign countries. He visited Lithuania, the first country outside of his home in United Kingdom, between 26 and 31 May 2001. Asquith then visited every other sovereign country from 4 July 2008, and arrived in the Federated States of Micronesia, his final country, on 8 July 2013. How did your love affair with travel start?
To be honest, it didn’t for a long time. My father was a pilot and I loved flying because of that from a very young age, ever since I can remember, but I never really picked up the travel
Aug 2018_InProfile04.indd 34
bug until I was 18. I’m sure I always had it in me because my parents were adventurous, but it wasn’t until I joined my best friends on a lastminute trip to Southeast Asia. From there, there was no looking back – I was hooked! Which was your favourite destination of them all?
Cartagena in Colombia. It’s amazingly beautiful there. The perfect setting of old town with cobbled streets and vibrant daily life, mixed with Caribbean beaches, it’s easy to see why some of history’s most revered writers and poets called Cartagena their home, from Gabriel Garcia Márquez to Ernest Hemingway. The people are passionate and it is visible and audible at almost every corner.
What was your most memorable experience?
That’s a tough question. I think any one of us would struggle to pick out just one experience. If I really have to pick just one, I would certainly say that watching the sunrise in Kiribati was one of the most memorable experiences. Not necessarily for the actual sunrise itself – I’m more of a sunset person so I don’t have to get up early! – but for what it represented. Kiribati is the easternmost inhabited island in the world, and their flag is even the rising sun from the ocean, so when I watched the sunrise from the easternmost beach and took a look around me, I realised – with the beach all to myself – that I was the first person in the world to watch the sunrise that day. It was incredibly memorable more for what it represented, which is how big the world is, but also how small at the same time, how we can still find our own little peace and tranquillity still. This was certainly a moment that will always stick with me. Some people might say you’ve come from a position of privilege to be able to travel like you have, especially since your father is a pilot. Do you think this is fair?
I would probably say never judge a book by its cover. Just because my father was a pilot it didn’t mean I got to fly around the world for free. I started working three jobs from the age of 15, and at 18, I got quite lucky with an investment at the depth of the global financial crisis. I worked hard and also had a bit of luck, but that didn’t mean I wasn’t living on a shoestring on my travels and grafting along the way to get as far as every dollar would take me.
17/07/2018 11:19 AM
What lessons have you learnt from your travels, especially about yourself?
There are so many, and by embracing travel, it largely made me into who I am today, I think. When I started out, I was a naïve 18-year-old who lacked respect and understanding for different cultures, traditions and ways of life. I spent a while volunteering building houses in Vietnam shortly after I began my travels, and although we couldn’t communicate in the same language as those working with us each day, it was an eye-opener how similar we are as people, even with huge diversities and language barriers, and our differences as individuals. It’s what makes travel rewarding – the diversity of the people and the places. It was apparent that the same little jokes are funny to all of us in any
given language that we are so similar. I’m still learning every day, but travel has certainly been my biggest single contributor in learning.
in a more than 14-hour flight, right? And oh, I love the A350! It’s one of my favourite aircraft. The windows are huge so you get some great views!
What advice would you give to someone who would like to travel like you have?
Are you still actively travelling?
Take your own time, enjoy it, do what suits you. Competitive travel has become quite popular recently, and I was lucky in that there was no official ‘youngest’ record to beat with Guinness World Records at the time, so I travelled at my own pace over five years, and I still feel like I’m only just starting, with so much of the world to discover. Also, if you’re nervous, try not to overthink. Have confidence and common sense and a good amount of preparation will go a long way. You recently travelled Business Class with Malaysia Airlines on their A350 from London to Malaysia and back. Tell us about your experience.
Where to start?! Awesome food, good films, a great bed to get some rest and a friendly crew – pretty much everything anyone would be hoping for
Aug 2018_InProfile04.indd 35
Yes, I’m still travelling quite a lot at the moment. I’m not too sure what time zone my body clock is in most of the time! It’s mostly for work as I started Holiday Swap to allow people to travel more cheaply. This app has been referred to as the Tinder of travel – although there is no actual dating involved! – and allows us to swap accommodation for just USD1 a night in all corners of the world. Accommodation makes up one of the largest costs for travellers, along with transport. Most of us are lucky enough to have a place to sleep at night so we at Holiday Swap thought why not swap what we already have, even if we are renting, and save more money for actual experiences and flights instead of a place to rest our heads? Who knows, you might match with that awesome villa in Barbados or a penthouse in New York City! ■

EXPLORE | Manaslu, Nepal
It seems like every mountain-loving and Nepal-bound traveller has a trek to Mount Everest Basecamp on their bucket list these days, and the logjams often found along the trails into the Khumbu show just how crowded it has gotten. Same goes for the classic Annapurna Circuit, where incessant road-building has threatened to turn the trek of a lifetime into a bumpy jeep ride full of dust. However, all is not lost for adventure-seeking hikers. The Manaslu Circuit and add-on Tsum Valley side-trip trek have become Nepal’s new Shangri-La, a place to experience Himalayan trekking at its most classic, and an opportunity to explore one of the most remote places left on the planet.
goingplacesmagazine.com | 38 | August 2018
I’m headed up the Larkya La Pass, at 5,100 metres, the highest place I’ve been in my life outside of a pressurised airplane cabin, and the apex of an 18-day journey around Manaslu, the world’s eighth highest mountain at 8,163 metres. Despite wearing several layers of down clothing, I’m shivering in the early morning minus temperatures, and gasping for breath as I labour to take one step after another in the rarefied thin air. While the going is hard, the surroundings take away much of the pain: towering rock walls, icy fluted peaks, the bluest sky I’ve ever seen, and magnificent total silence. The few trekkers up ahead of me look like ants in a line, reduced to insignificant dots on the world’s largest living topographical map.
While trekking in the Himalayas for two to three weeks is certainly no walk in the park, it has been made a lot easier than it used to be. The Manaslu region opened to foreign trekkers in 1991, but the absence of “teahouse” trekking lodges around the circuit meant that one needed a full-blown expedition carrying tents and food for several weeks in order to be able to survive. These days, warm clothing and a sense of adventure are the only requirements needed to get close to Himalayan grandeur. The trail starts in the subtropical lowlands, traversing up and down the majestic Budhi Gandaki River through lush rice terraces, passing through hospitable ethnic Gurung villages. Further along, the rice gets replaced by millet, and the villages become Tibetan, with stone chortens (Buddhist shrines) and Mani walls engraved with Sanskrit mantras lining the entrance to each settlement. As opposed to the Everest region, the route here follows trade routes that have been in use for ages, leading up to high passes on the Tibet/China border. Three days in on the Manaslu Circuit, trekkers have the opportunity to make a side trip up into the wild Tsum Valley, which adds almost an extra week to the walk. The Tsum has only been open to outsiders since 2008, and offers adventurers the chance to see a traditional part of Nepal that has all but disappeared elsewhere. Following the raging Siyar River, the trail into the Tsum is precipitous and exposed, often closed by landslides and extremely vulnerable to weather (residents here were sealed off for several weeks

The trail starts in the subtropical lowlands, traversing up and down the majestic Budhi Gandaki River through lush rice terraces, passing through hospitable ethnic Gurung villages. after the 2015 earthquake), yet the arduous journey is rewarded by a hidden world, hemmed in by the steep river valley below and high Tibetan passes on the other end. On its higher reaches, the Tsum flattens out, with beautiful fertile fields of amaranth, millet, and barley set in front of old stone homes making for wildly photogenic landscapes. The Tsumba Tibetans who inhabit the valley are pastoralists, and their religion forbids hunting, making the Tsum one of the best places in Nepal to spot wildlife. Bharal sheep and Himalayan Tahr deer are commonly spotted on slopes, and even the elusive snow leopards can be seen at times. There are caves carved into the mountain slopes in the Tsum, and legend has it that Milarepa, one of the great Tibetan saints, spent years meditating in a cave here. Legend also has it that the Tsum is a beyul, or hidden spiritual valley, accessible only to those hardy enough to make the arduous journey in. In fact, ancient texts state that it is known as Kyimolung, which translates to “hidden valley of happiness.” At the top of the Tsum lies Mu Gompa, a monastery with a slate roof nestled into the side of a ridge up at 4,000 metres. As there are no lodges here, visitors are allowed to stay at the monastery, and it is fascinating to watch the few remaining monks that live here go about their

daily puja ceremonies, meditations, chanting, and other routines. Dinner here isn’t much more than a watery plate of lentil curry with rice, but the atmosphere is magical and the views are stupendous, looking all the way back down the valley, and the snaking Siyar River, with Himalchuli, a 7,900-metre peak towering above everything. The scenery gets even better upon returning to the main Manaslu circuit, with the trail rising in elevation, weaving through pine and rhododendron forests up into the alpine. In Samagaon, the largest village along the route, most hikers take a day off to acclimatise for the high pass and make a day trip up to Manaslu Basecamp, which at 4,600 metres is possibly the best day hike in the world, and as close as most non-alpinists are going to get to coming face-to-face with an 8,000-metre peak. Manaslu's entire east face is directly in front of you here, and its glacier rumbles down right below, with towering ice seracs and crevasses looking treacherously close by. Several hours above Samagaon is Samdo, the last inhabited settlement on this side of the range. Tibetans here can grow only barley and potatoes, and when we pass through, the fall harvest is in full swing, with farmers sifting the reap and loaded yak trains heading down valley with full loads. It’s too far to reach the other side of the pass from here, but three hours further, a tent camp and very basic stone lodge have been set up at Dharamsala, with tents outfitted with mattresses and a communal dining room arranged for fuelling the masses. Sleep is hard to come by here, as the 4,500-metre elevation

5 tips for hiking the Manaslu/Tsum Circuit 1. Time your visit The optimal months for doing the trek are March/April and October/ November. Spring sees the forests filled with rhododendrons, whereas fall brings the clearest weather and best mountain views. Trekking from mid-May to September isn’t recommended as it’s the monsoon season (muddy trails, leeches, and no views) and January/February are terribly cold, not to mention most of the lodges are closed.
6.~7. The Manaslu circuit takes trekkers through isolated farming communities 8. Fields of amaranth and millet in the upper Tsum Valley are ready for harvesting 9. Local women cooking over a woodstove in Nile, Tsum Valley 10. The tent camp and basic stone lodge set up for trekkers in Dharamsala
2. Hire a porter Either a guide or guide-porter is required as part of the permit system around Manaslu. Guides aren’t really necessary as the trails are pretty obvious and fairly well signposted but carrying weight at altitude could be an issue for the less fit. It is recommended that you employ a local for the task, and be able to walk with just your camera, water bottle, and a jacket during the day.
3. Eat dhal bhat
makes for frozen nights, and most trekkers leave for the pass at 4-5 am, hoping to avoid the freezing winds that tend to build up later in the day.
9 10
As I make my way to the Larkya La, I am passed by several lowland porters who are carrying entire mattresses over the pass. Strapped together over their backs like giant refrigerators, they have to be carrying upwards of 50 kilogrammes, and despite the rocky, cold terrain, they are only wearing tennis shoes. The mountains here are humbling, but the human spirit matched against the environment is even more so. At last the pass comes into view, with bands of gaily coloured prayer flags by the thousands tied across the rock cairns that mark the top. It will be another four hours of descent before I reach Bimthang, the next village, where a hot shower and a cold beer awaits, but for now, this is as close to paradise as I’m ever going to get in this life. ■

Lentil curry/soup with rice is Nepal’s main dish, eaten twice a day by almost everyone in the country. It is usually served with some green vegetables and fermented sour pickles called achar. While lodge menus offer rice, pasta, and potato dishes as well, dhal comes with refills, making it the best bang for your rupee. Trekking 15 and more kilometres each day, you’re going to need all the calories you can get.

4. Don’t rush Not only is this the trip of a lifetime with incredible scenery, slowing down may save your life. The recommended rules regarding avoiding altitude sickness are not to be taken lightly. Once over 3,000 metres, you shouldn’t be sleeping higher than 300 metres above where you slept the night before, and for every 1,000 metres gained, take a rest day. The more nights you sleep at one altitude, the better your body adjusts for going higher the next day.
5. Plan your journey Do some research as to the potential side trips, bus-versusjeep transport options to the trailhead, and trekking company recommendations for arranging permits/porters and others. The Manaslu Circuit Trek website has plenty of information for pre-trip planning, so do visit manaslucircuittrek.com.

Daun Muda Soul Food
Chef Andrea was already known for his carefully sourced imported products, but at Daun Muda, he turns his attention to the best ingredients that Indonesia has to offer. The freshness from limau kasturi (calamansi lime) shines through the flavour-packed sambal cacam made with chunks of salted telang fish, while the raw kenikir greens (known as ulam raja in Malaysia, a variety of cosmos) form the leafy base of the rusip Daun Muda, a bright mix of exotic vegetables that is so much more than the house salad it sounds like. Many dishes are served in generous shared platters: chicken sate is served with a Manado-style tomato sambal that defies expectations, while the nasi goreng kambing (lamb shank fried rice) embraces its heady IndoMiddle Eastern roots.

If the bright flavours and copious portions aren’t enough, the open kitchen, a flood of natural light, a crowd-pleasing late-20th-century Indonesian pop soundtrack and Javanegra fair-trade coffee all contribute to making low-profile Daun Muda the worst-kept secret in town. facebook.com/Daun-Muda-SoulFood-175223173081332

Chef Ragil Imam Wibowo has been a passionate promoter of the culinary diversity of Indonesia for years. In addition to his restaurants and other culinary activities, he is known for hosting Makan Besar (Big Feast), a television programme in which he criss-crossed the archipelago in search of local delicacies.
7
That experience very naturally led him to open Nusa Indonesian Gastronomy, where he takes diners on a culinary rollercoaster through the far-flung corners of the country. Located in what was once a wing of the Jakarta mayor’s residence built in the 1930s, the building was painstakingly dismantled, then reassembled brick-by-brick in its current location. Chef Ragil works closely with farmers and other artisans in local communities who supply him with foraged goods, fresh fish, seasonal produce and delicacies like the rare dried eel rendang belut from Batusangkar, West Sumatra, cooked for hours over a wood fire with no fewer than 40 types of aromatic leaves until it resembles fragrant shards of charcoal.

In Chef Ragil’s kitchen, love of tradition does not mean he always plays by the rules. A recent meal included dendeng batoko, grilled dried sliced beef from Minangkabau, served not with the traditional accompaniment of sambal balado but with a tangy sambal tulang enriched with bits of cartilage. Sayur banbanci jantung sapi, the classic festive Batawi (Jakartan) dish of beef heart with coconut, has been reimagined here with dainty plating and airy bites of baby sugar cane. The thoughtful selection of desserts also succeeds in presenting the many facets of Indonesian sweets, including roasted banana kue, a modern coconut gelato and jackfruit cream. nusagastronomy.com

On Pulau Carey, an island in Selangor, Malaysia, inhabited by the Mah Meri indigenous tribe, the community demonstrates their pride in their heritage through customs such as Ari Muyang, a celebration in honour of their ancestors, and by passing down their traditions from one generation to another. One of these traditions is an artform practised by the Mah Meri women, which unlike the woodcarvings made by men, went largely unnoticed outside their community. “When I was a child, after we came home from school and spent time playing, we would sit down to weave. Whether it was coconut or banana leaves, we learned the proper way to hold them and then weave them into products,” says 50-year-old Maznah Unyan. The women would make use of the crafts, comprising bags, pouches and baskets themselves or sell them to their friends. However, Maznah began considering the larger commercial potential of her handicrafts when she came across an article in a magazine. “I was 18 at the time and saw an article about handicrafts from Terengganu while staying at my cousin’s house. The article had a photo of
a pretty flower-patterned mat.” She told her cousin that she wanted to learn how to create and sell similar products, and he responded with derision. “My cousin told me ‘that’s not possible, Maznah, you don’t have higher education!’” recalls Maznah, who adds that she only studied at the primary school level. “I remember his words to this day.”

Although she was disheartened, Maznah continued to weave until she settled down and started a family. Her time was then occupied with earning a living through fishing and farming to support her family. When an illness rendered her unable to continue with physically demanding work, Maznah worried about how she would continue to provide for them. “I spent quite a lot of time thinking about that.” Fortuitously, the answer to her ponderings arrived during the Ari Muyang celebration. A visitor to the island inquired about crafts made by women, and word got back to Maznah. After consulting with her mother, who advised her to make bujam lipos, a type of pouch that is traditionally used to store tobacco or betel nuts, Maznah got together with some other women to make the colourful pouches. “We hadn’t
3 2 made bujam in a long time,” she says. But the item was well-received, prompting the visitor to return again and again to the island requesting more. “She kept coming back after a week, two weeks, to our village because the demand for the pouches was high. Her friends loved them,” says Maznah. “After that, we started weaving other items like bookmarks and baskets.” She explains that once you understand the basics of weaving, it is easy to create a variety of products. As we talk, Maznah’s fingers are hard at work weaving strands of green and light beige pandanus into a squarish shape. She is joined in this interview by two of her friends from her weaving circle, Anom and Tijah, who let her do most of the talking while they smile shyly in the background. The women grow the pandanus plant themselves in their front yards and also process them for weaving. Maznah says she was met with resistance when she initially approached other women to participate in her weaving enterprise. “At first they did not want to join. But we told them, these products sell. Rather than sit around gossiping, let’s make some money.” She cannot recall how she met Sasibai Kimis, founder of Earth Heir, a social enterprise that works with

artisans from marginalised communities to promote heritage crafts, but she says business has blossomed since they started collaborating. “When we got the order from Malaysia Airlines, our sales has flown up even higher,” she says, laughing at her own pun. Through Earth Heir, Malaysia Airlines has commissioned a range of custom-made products from the Mah Meri women as part of the airline’s effort to support homegrown smalland medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) in line with a campaign called ‘Hospitality Starts With Us’. From June to August this year, the exclusive Earth Heir line consisting of a set of bookmarks and bracelets weaved by the Mah Meri women, as well as postcards featuring some of the artisans under the enterprise’s banner will be available for sale on Malaysia Airlines flights. According to Maznah, this is the first time they have had to weave products according to specification. When asked if that was a challenge, she hesitates, but the mostly quiet Anom immediately chimes in, “it was hard.” Her quick response and the intensity of her answer hints at the challenges that come with stepping outside their comfort zone. Wong Xiao Cheng, Chief Operating Officer of Earth Heir, admits that the pressure of meeting customers’ requirements can sometimes get to the artisans. “Quality control is very important to us. There are certain guidelines we have to follow like the colours, the shape and the weave can’t be loose, otherwise the product will break,” she explains.

Just as Malaysia Airlines is known throughout the world, we would also like our handcrafted products to be as famous throughout the world. “Once when I visited them in the village, I put aside 20 bookmarks and said, ‘this won’t do, the customers won’t buy something like this’.” The artisans were unhappy, but Wong was quick to explain that customers had certain preferences. “That was my first or second time there, so maybe I just hadn’t learned how to communicate or adapt to them. Every group has a different temperament.” Earth Heir works with over 100 artisans throughout Malaysia, including those from other indigenous tribes, refugee communities and differently abled individuals to showcase heritage art forms and promote their value. Handwoven scarves and blouses made from light fibres of silk, colourful handcrafted bags and baskets made from recycled plastic strips, as well as delicately hand-stitched embroidered jewellery are just some of the items available for purchase at their retail spacecum-gallery in the Kuala Lumpur neighbourhood of Ampang or at their online store. “The goal is that people appreciate these handmade crafts and are willing to pay a
premium price for them because they can keep them and use them for a long time,” says Wong. She maintains that prior to working with Earth Heir, some of the artisans were reluctant to raise their prices because they feared that nobody would buy their products. “One of our artisans actually said she wasn’t sure if anyone out there would like her handicrafts.” Now, artisans like Maznah say they can earn a living from their handwoven products. For Maznah, she has also cultivated a reputation as an expert at her craft. “Just as Malaysia Airlines is known throughout the world, we would also like our handcrafted products to be as famous throughout the world,” she says with a serious expression before breaking into a giggle. ■

As the flames diminish, Law confesses that meat is her favourite thing to cook. It was the subject of her first cookbook, also called Meatology, which she penned three years ago. Its success led her to embark on another collection of recipes last year, Her World Cookbook: The Rice Pot, which recently earned her a coveted Gourmand Award, also known as the Oscars of culinary publishing.

“It was completely unexpected,” she insists, “but a huge honour to have such a simple book recognised among the best in the world. All the recipes are rice-based and many were inspired by my Mom's home cooking, so it means a lot.” Despite her humble demeanour, Law has achieved more in her 20-year career than most chefs do in a lifetime. At 43, she owns her own restaurant, boasts an enviable reputation among critics and foodies, and has not one but two books under her belt. But her route to the top has been anything but conventional. After graduating from Taylor's College in the nineties, Law found herself young, free and hungry for experience, and so she headed to the U.K. where she spent two years living and working in London. “I didn't have a work visa,” she admits, “so getting paid a decent wage was difficult, and living in London is expensive, but I made it work.” To 'make it work' Law juggled four jobs and worked round the clock to keep a roof over her head and broaden her culinary horizons. “I started my first job of the day at 5.30 a.m. and finished my last shift at around 2 a.m. the following morning,” she says, shaking her head in disbelief at the recollection. “I worked in a newsagent sorting stacks of newspapers every morning, I did split shifts in an Irish pub cooking traditional British roast dinners, and between shifts I worked for a nearby newsstand. Then at night I worked in a Chinese takeaway until 2 a.m. in return for learning how to cook Chinese food.”

Chef Yenni Law has fire in her eyes as she expertly flambés a medium-rare tenderloin, casually feeding the flames by tossing a dash of aromatic cognac into the pan. This is her restaurant Meatology's signature dish, Steak On Fire, and it has earned her a devoted following among Kuala Lumpur's carnivores.
Eventually, exhausted and unable to secure a work visa in the U.K., Law headed to Spain on the promise of both a visa and a position working in a restaurant. “I answered an advert in a newspaper, which was risky,” admits Law, “but I've never been afraid to take risks, and when I was offered the job I went for it.” A year later, Law still had no visa and her Spanish employer refused to return her passport or pay her the agreed salary. “In the end, I called the authorities and had him arrested,” she recalls. “It didn't work out the way I planned but I don't regret it because I learned a lot about trusting my instincts and it's what made me realise that I wanted my own business. I didn't want to work for anyone again.” Back in Kuala Lumpur, Law made her dream of going solo a reality by securing a business partnership that allowed her to take over a venue in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, an affluent neighbourhood in the Malaysian capital, which she reopened as The Boathouse restaurant. “The initial business partnership did not work out, and in the end, I was left with a lot of debt to clear. The electricity was cut off and we owed a lot of money to suppliers because our finances

weren't well managed,” she admits, frankly. “I was faced with a choice – I could give up the business or I could try to get it back on track on my own.” Never one to back down from a challenge, Law took a chance on saving the business she'd worked so hard for by paying off the restaurant's debts, finding new investors and, eventually, rebranding it as Meatology in honour of her first book. Now, her challenges finally behind her, Law says she's enjoying her newfound fame as an author and is already planning her next book – a tribute to her mother's cooking, but with a modern spin. “For me, writing is a way to leave a legacy. It's a way of saying 'I was here' and that is important to me,” she says, the fire still burning in her eyes.

Asked if her risk-taking days were behind her, she remains coy. “When I was young I took risks; now I'm older I take educated risks,” she says with a laugh. “I'm still the same person, just wiser, more experienced and thankful I'm not working four jobs anymore.” ■

Facing Extinction
For Being Cute As videos of slow lorises as pets and selfies with the wide-eyed creature become a trend, so does the alarming danger of the primates being extinct. Words SC Chua goingplacesmagazine.com | 60 | August 2018
You’ve seen the YouTube videos where the slow loris raises its arms while being tickled. Or where it appears to be enjoying itself being brushed, all wide-eyed. How about slow loris selfies, where the animal is a photo prop for memorable travel photos you show friends back home? Now if you knew that the slow loris is actually being tortured in these “cute” scenarios, would you still like the video or say yes to having your photo taken with one?
survey found that slow lorises are among the most frequently encountered animal for sale online.
Sadly, many of us are unaware of the harm the slow loris goes through purely for our entertainment. It is this ignorance that fuels street vendors to use the animal as a means of making money through tourist traps and illegal traders to capture, smuggle and sell slow lorises as pets, taking the animal away from its natural habitat and into one that causes it harm, pushing it slowly to extinction.
Their circumstances don’t improve from there. Before being sold, their sharp teeth are clipped out using pliers with no anesthesia to prevent the animal from biting their handler, a bite that can harm. Do a search on the Internet for videos on this process and you’ll be horrified for the pain the poor animal goes through. Then, the animal is smuggled in inhumane conditions before making its way into a tiny cage, fed inappropriate food instead of the diet it thrives on in the wild, and shoved into bright light despite being a nocturnal animal. In a 2016 study, researchers from Oxford Brookes University in England examined a hundred online videos of pet lorises, and their conclusion? All these animals were distressed, sick or exposed to conditions unnatural to them.
“For a long time, slow lorises were targeted largely for meat and traditional medicine but over time we have increasingly seen them in the pet trade. We have found dozens for sale in markets and used as photo props in some Southeast Asian countries,” says Claire Beastall, Training and Capacity Building Coordinator at TRAFFIC, an international organisation dedicated to delivering innovative and practical solutions to wildlife trade issues by working closely with governments and the private sector. Because it is perceived as “oh so cute!” – no thanks to the viral videos – the demand for slow lorises as a pet is on the rise. In fact, a great deal of the trade happens online with very young slow lorises sold as pets on social media and messaging apps. In Malaysia itself, a TRAFFIC

How is all this causing harm to the animal? Firstly, the endangered animal is often captured from the wild using snares that can maim or kill them. Young ones are ripped away from their mothers, drugged and then shoved into plastic crates and bags, taken away from their home.
All eight species of slow lorises are considered threatened, and the Javan slow loris is one of the 25 most endangered primates worldwide. The slow loris is protected by local laws in South Asia and by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), a treaty that aims to prevent trade that could threaten wild species’ survival. How did they end up in our homes and used as props at popular holiday destinations then? “Unfortunately, where demand exists,

someone will often see a chance for profit. These criminals give no thought to the continued survival of these animals in the wild or the well-being of the individuals caught up in this illegal trade,” says Beastall. By paying to have your photo taken with a slow loris, not only are you encouraging wildlife poaching and the ill treatment of these animals, you are supporting an illegal business.
Where air trafficking is concerned, airlines come into play by educating their staff, contractors and suppliers to help detect wild animals being smuggled using their aircraft. In June 2017, Malaysia Airlines declared a Zero-Tolerance Policy on wildlife trafficking and has signed the Buckingham Declaration, a pledge taken by

As for slow lorises that are being trafficked as pets, they are often trafficked via airlines in baggage or hidden under clothing. Authorities all over the world regularly seize wild animals from check-in and hand-carry baggage, cargo and even the post. “Wild animals do not make good pets, whatever the species,” says Beastall. “Some species become trendy after they have been featured in celebrity pictures, movies or even viral videos. The effects of even such fleeting popularity can be devastating to wild animal populations long after everyone has moved on to focus on the next big thing.” In the case of the slow loris, the animal appeared in singer Rihanna’s Instagram post, while YouTube videos get millions of ‘likes’ and comments starting with “where can I get one?”

numerous leaders of the global transportation industry at Buckingham Palace to shut down illegal trafficking routes around the world. The airline will strictly adhere to all CITES requirements in the transport of any endangered wild animal or plants in any of its aircraft. The airline’s ground staff, such as its security personnel and MABKargo’s ground staff, have been trained in anti-wildlife trafficking courses, while its cabin crew will undergo a similar training soon to raise awareness on the illegal wildlife trafficking trade, laws and regulations, things to look out for and what to do if they suspect anything. Training material for these sessions are provided by TRAFFIC, and the two organisations have also collaborated in awareness-raising events for the public. “Malaysia has extremely good transport links, making it attractive not just for travellers but also for wildlife smugglers. Information on illegal wildlife trade is on display at many of Malaysia’s airports, and frequent checks on passengers, luggage and cargo have resulted in numerous wildlife seizures. The authorities are working hard to make sure that there is no room for wildlife traffickers in Malaysia,” says Beastall.

Just as we play a part in pushing the slow loris to extinction, we can also be the solution in ending its illegal trade. “Do not support activities or attractions that involve illegally
The illegal wildlife trade is the fourth largest international criminal activity, behind drug trafficking, counterfeit goods and human trafficking. Its estimated value is about USD26 billion (RM104 billion) each year and affects thousands of animal species around the world, including the slow loris. Here’s how you can help: n If you suspect an animal is being
used inappropriately as a tourist attraction, do not visit. Report the business instead. n Do not encourage street vendors
by taking photos of the animal. n Make a difference with your money.
Do not spend it at such attractions. n Do not buy wildlife products.

The Joss Stick Specialist. Meet 90-something Lee Beng Chuan, the oldest joss stick maker in Penang.

Walk around the pre-war houses around Penang's Kuan Yin Temple in the morning and chances are, you might come across a senior gentleman hard at work on a stool – mixing and kneading aromatic ingredients into dough, before painstakingly moulding the mixture by hand onto bamboo sticks. By afternoon, these sticks are left under the sun to dry and eventually become what we recognise as joss sticks, a fragrant incense used for religious and ritual purposes. No 1 Lorong Muda is the home and workshop of Lee Beng Chuan, who has been making joss sticks for over 70 years. One of the last few people who make joss sticks by hand in Malaysia today, Lee has been featured in newspapers, magazines and international documentaries over the years. Famous for his thick handmade joss sticks – as these last longer than the regular thinner versions – Lee is recognised as a living heritage of Penang.

beli colok naga orang lain. Semua bahagiannya akan dipisahkan sebelum dicantum semula. Bukan mudah.
Famous for his thick handmade joss sticks – as these last longer than the regular thinner versions – Lee is recognised as a living heritage of Penang.
3
Chuckling, he reveals his age this way: “Malaysia’s Prime Minister Tun M (who is 93) is older than me by a year, so I consider him my brother.” Lee’s father used to sell joss sticks until his death in 1935. At the age of 12, Lee followed in his father’s footsteps and began selling joss sticks. Then when he was in his 20s, he decided to make his own joss sticks. “I would sit in a temple and watch the masters at work. Nobody taught me.” A few years later, he tried his hand at making the more complex dragon joss stick, as it fetched a higher price. “I bought other people’s dragon joss sticks and disassembled them, then made it part by part (by reassembling the pieces together). It was not easy to shape it. I had to use different tools to make the snout, the eyes, the whiskers, and so on.” The year 2009 saw the crowning achievement of his career when he produced a nine-metre-tall pillar of gigantic dragon joss sticks for the Lunar New Year celebration, entirely by hand.

Pelancong asing gemar membeli colok-colok Lee kerana ia menggunakan serbuk kayu cendana khas dari Australia yang lebih wangi dan tahan lama Lee’s joss sticks are popular with foreigners as he uses Australian sandalwood powder which is fragrant and long lasting
Since then, he has stopped making dragon joss sticks, citing old age, and instead, concentrates on making aromatherapy incense sticks that are popular with tourists. Unlike commercially produced joss sticks made up of sawdust, Lee uses sandalwood powder imported from Australia, which is known to be healthier, burns longer and produces an aromatic smell. His joss sticks are also noticeably thicker than of those made in factories.
“Biarpun semakin berusia, bapa tetap inovatif. Beliau bak jurutera colok,“ puji Chin Poh dengan bangga.
Aug 2018_Warisan02.indd 67
The only drawback is that it costs more to produce, but for Lee it’s not about the money. His continuous involvement despite his advanced age is driven by passion, and a promise he made to his late wife, Chong Chon Chiew, who used to help him run the business and make joss sticks by his side. In an interview with a local paper, he revealed the heartfelt wish his wife expressed before passing away in May 2015. “She told me, ‘My time is up. Since you make joss sticks, you must make good joss sticks and give it to the people so that they can use it for blessings, to give them good, happy and long lives.’”

7. Selepas diuli dan diadun ke bentuk yang diingini, colokcolok akan dijemur di bawah sinaran matahari After moulding into the desired shapes, the joss sticks are left to dry in the sun
Moved by her words, he vowed to continue making joss sticks to give to people as blessings. Not long after, his son, Lee Chin Poh, quit his job to keep him company and to learn the trade from him. “My father was quite depressed after my mother passed on. You have to understand, they were together for 60 years.” These days, Lee seems to be back to his cheerful, affable self. He is chatty and happy to share tips on joss stick-making, anecdotes about his life during World War II, as well as a growing passion for writing Chinese couplets and calligraphy. “Despite his advanced age, my father is quite innovative. He is like an engineer of joss sticks,” the younger Lee shares proudly.
Jika ibunya masih hidup, beliau pasti turut berasa bangga. ■

The Tale Of The Bangle With a single sacrifice, Datuk Siti Rahmah Kassim earned her place among the nation’s beloved, playing a small but important role as the country headed toward independence. Words Siva Sithraputhran | Photography The Star, Malaysia
Siti Rahmah Kassim was not much different. In 1957, she attended a political rally in the southwestern Malaysian state of Melaka just as British Malaya was closing in on independence from colonial Britain. In the crowded hall that day, she heard Tunku Abdul Rahman, who later was to become Malaya’s first prime minister, talk about a lack of funds to go to London to make a final push in the negotiations for the handover of power. So frustrated was he by the predicament that tears began to run down his cheeks.
Spontaneous Act Moved by what she saw and heard, Siti Rahmah acted quickly and decisively. She took off her prized gold bangle, a wedding present from her father, and handed it over to Tunku Abdul Rahman, placing the item in a red shawl. It was her gift to the budding nation. Emboldened by her own actions, she began to urge others to join in her effort. Soon, women were handing over pieces of gold jewellery. Men gave away their watches and rings. The nation was their cause. Siti Rahmah’s spontaneous act had caused a ripple effect.
national news agency Bernama that she had felt compelled to act, spurred on by her love for the country and people.
Pioneering Politics Born in Rembau, Negri Sembilan, in November 1926, Siti Rahmah’s political awakening came early. She joined a popular protest to oppose colonial plans for the country’s future when she was 19 years old. Ethnic Malays opposed the then-formation of Malayan Union, which they believed weakened Malay sovereignty. Siti Rahmah become a member of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), which formed the backbone of the Barisan Nasional coalition that ruled Malaysia from independence until May this year. When Malaya held its first post-independence election in 1959, Siti Rahmah became one of the first women to contest, winning the Negeri
Sembilan state assembly seat of Terentang as a candidate for the Barisan Nasional coalition. She was able to defend the seat in the 1964 election and stood down in 1969. During her tenure she worked hard for women’s welfare. Throughout her life, Siti Rahmah continued to be involved in politics, holding various positions in the women’s wing of UMNO, and serving in several non-governmental organisations, including the Islamic Welfare Organisation of Malaysia (Perkim). “As long as I am alive, I will keep fighting because that’s the spirit flowing in my blood since 1945, when I was starting to become familiar with politics,” she was quoted as saying in an interview with Utusan Malaysia in June 2011. Toward the end of her life, Siti Rahmah was feted as a pioneering politician and honoured with the title of ‘Datuk’. She died in March 2017 due to age-related reasons. She was 90. ■

In many Asian societies, gold is a safety net, a rainy-day fund, a nest egg. In the 1950s, at a time when few people had bank accounts, and stocks and shares were barely heard of, families hung on to their bits of gold jewellery and trinkets with great care.

“There was a woman with a gold tooth. She wanted to give it away, so she went to the back (of the hall) to take it off in order to make a contribution,” Siti Rahmah told the Malaylanguage daily Utusan Malaysia in August 2015. Siti Rahmah’s exploits cut no ice with her mother, who punished her with a beating. The generosity of the audience that day helped Tunku Abdul Rahman make the trip to London, and on 31 August that year, the Federation of Malaya formally gained independence. Speaking many years later, Siti Rahmah told the

INSIDE MALAYSIA AIRLINES
Rekindling Ties goingplacesmagazine.com | 76 | August 2018
It was a fun and lively affair as Malaysia Airlines celebrated its inaugural Kuala Lumpur-Brisbane-Kuala Lumpur service with a send-off event at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on 6 June. The event marked the reopening of the airline’s operations into Queensland, whilst promoting Brisbane as a key travel destination for business and leisure. As part of the launch, passengers onboard MH135 departing from Kuala Lumpur were given special goodies at the airport’s boarding lounge prior to their flight. The four-times weekly service will be operated by the A330-300 with 290 seats, comprising 27 seats in Business Class and 263 seats in Economy Class.
Groomed To Shine Knowledge of personal hygiene and grooming is important as it encourages independence and helps to boost one’s confidence. To help empower the visuallyimpaired and to give back to the community, the Malaysia Airlines Berhad Academy’s School of Hospitality recently organised a two-day programme on grooming and self-image called ‘The Power to Shine’. The event saw 12 enthusiastic trainers, visually-impaired individuals, and caregivers taking part in talks and activities to enhance their personal image. Among the topics covered were first impressions, image management, wardrobe planning, as well as hair, personal and oral hygiene. Participants were given live demonstrations and practical sessions on skincare and makeup. The programme also focused on body image and social acceptability, such as maintaining a healthy diet and exercise.

SAFETY + SERVICE INFO
CABIN LUGGAGE HANDLING Passenger and crew safety onboard our flights is our highest priority. In compliance with the airline’s policy and in observing Occupational, Safety and Health Regulations requirements, cabin crew are no longer required to stow passengers’ hand luggages into the overhead stowage compartment. This is to minimise occupational hazard and ergonomic risks faced by cabin crew in the aircraft. Cabin crew on duty will, however, assist passengers travelling with infants, young passengers travelling alone, the elderly, and passengers with reduced mobility. Passengers who are fit and in good health must carry, stow and secure their own hand luggages on board. Hand luggage exceeding the 7kg weight limit is required to be checked in before boarding.
PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PED) For safety reasons and in line with the Department of Civil Aviation guidelines, mobile phones and all PEDs must be switched off once aircraft doors are closed. Whilst cruising, devices placed in flight mode may be used. The devices must again be switched off during the approach for landing until the aircraft is parked at the terminal building. Devices transmitting strong signals must remain switched off throughout the flight, until disembarkation. The Captain may prohibit the use of devices that can interfere with the aircraft’s system.
LITHIUM BATTERIES Lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries for portable electronic devices (PEDs), including medical devices must not exceed 2g for lithium metal batteries and 100Wh for lithium ion batteries. All spare batteries, including lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries, for PEDs must be carried in passengers’ carry-on baggage only. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. For PEDs containing non-spillable batteries, they must be 12V or less or 100Wh or less. A maximum of two spare batteries may be carried. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.
ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES Electronic cigarettes must be carried on one’s person or in carry-on baggage only. Recharging of the device in-flight is not permitted.
ZERO TOLERANCE OF ABUSE We value courteousness. Any form of threat, verbal abuse or violence towards our staff will be taken seriously. We are committed to supporting anyone who has been the victim of an assault.
Aug 2018_MH Safety Guide.indd 79

Sick Boy – THE CHAINSMOKERS
The Chainsmokers single has some of the expected EDM squelches but it’s a little more varied and darker than their usual fare. It’s a socially charged anthem about self-identity in today’s world and standing tall in the face of what you can or cannot control.

Time For Tea
goingplacesmagazine.com | 96 | August 2018
The launch of DOME’s High Tea, hosted by the Melium Group for Friends of Melium, was a lively affair attended by guests and members of the media, made colourful by a beautiful pop-up flower shop organised by the Young Women’s Christian Association. The two High Tea sets, namely the Malaysian High Tea Set and English High Tea Set, can be enjoyed exclusively at selected DOME outlets in Genting Highlands and Kuala Lumpur.
Artful Showcase A collaboration between Malaysia Airports and the faculty of Creative Arts from Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University College has produced a whimsical temporary mural at the Langkawi International Airport, depicting the beauty and uniqueness of the Malaysian island. The mural showcases the students’ talent, while providing a pleasant experience for travellers amid refurbishment works being done at the airport.

In With The New
Debuting at Suria KLCC mall in Kuala Lumpur is Tom Ford Beauty, the brand’s second standalone store in the world. Designed with luxury in mind, from the white marble slabs to layered grey glass sculptures, visitors can expect an enhanced shopping experience, with private make-up services by Tom Ford Beauty Specialists, as well as a Makeup Lounge for private cosmetic and fragrance one-to-one consultations.
The opening of 23 Old Bond Street in London marked yet another momentous milestone for designer Stella McCartney as she celebrated the star-studded occasion alongside celebrity friends and family. The store will carry all of the brand’s collections, and marks a new phase in the brand’s retail expansion.
