FROM THE COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF
Dear Guests,
goingplacesmagazine.com | 8 | February 2019
First and foremost, I would like to wish all of you celebrating the Lunar Year, Gong Xi Fa Cai. It is a pleasure to welcome all of you onboard. We hope that you have enjoyed our Chinese New Year video. If you have not seen it, please do so on our official Facebook page. The video is centred around family reunions, and this reminds me so much of my Chinese New Year celebrations with my family. My late mother, who was from Guangzhou, would always wait for my sister and I to return to our hometown in Alor Setar, Kedah, to celebrate the festivity. It is tradition that my mother organises the reunion dinner with my extended family on the eve of Chinese New Year, when we would catch up with one another over good food and even better stories. At that time, my job as a pilot often took me away from special occasions, and sometimes, festivities with my family. I would be very grateful whenever I got the chance to reunite with them during the New Year, and because of this, I know how valuable and precious it is to be with your family during this special time. Running an airline now, nothing is more rewarding than knowing we have reunited family members with their loved ones, even if it means postponing our own reunions. As the national airline, Malaysia Airlines is the first to connect Malaysians to each other and the world, and we take immense pride in ensuring our guests receive the very best of Malaysian Hospitality. All 13,000 of our employees work very hard to ensure that your festive travels, be it going home or discovering new adventures, are as seamless as possible. We make sure we do this whatever the situation and whatever the day, even during public holidays. We hope that you have enjoyed our service, and if you are on your way to balik kampung, we wish you a wonderful trip home. Again, we would like to wish all of you a Happy Chinese New Year and we hope that this new year brings you good health, hope and prosperity. I would also like to wish you a great journey with Malaysia Airlines always, and to all our visitors, a wonderful visit to or stopover in Malaysia. ■

EDITOR’S NOTE
Most of the traditions associated with the 15 days originated from China – for instance, staying home on the first day of the new year for quiet family time, and only visiting friends and family on the second day. This is also the day when married women return home with their husbands after spending New Year’s eve and the first day with the in-laws. Some of these traditions are still observed, but others have become obsolete, either for practical reasons or from ignorance. In Malaysia, we have a wonderful tradition of ‘open houses’, where households celebrating the festive occasion, be it Lunar New Year, Eid or Diwali, welcome friends and even strangers to their homes for food and merriment. Do try to invite yourself to an open house if you’re visiting Malaysia during these festive times. Malaysia’s racial diversity is its biggest blessing. You will not find a concept that strengthens ties and relationships such as this anywhere else. goingplacesmagazine.com | 10 | February 2019
Julie Goh Editor
As I write this note, it’s three weeks to the new lunar year, or Chinese New Year as it is more popularly known here in Malaysia. I’m still trying to catch up with life and work after the year-end holidays, so I’m not quite ready for another big festival. But time, as they say, waits for no one, so I better get on with it. The Year of the Boar will begin on 5 February this year, when nearly a quarter of the world’s population of 7.7 billion will celebrate it in one way or another. When I was a child of five to six years old, my mom would sew 15 new dresses for me, one for each day of the festive season that stretches from the new moon on New Year’s day until the full moon on Lantern Festival. Fifteen is a lot, but I’d like to believe my small size and being the only daughter in the family made up for it; plus, she likes to sew. I’m blessed, I know.
In this festive issue, we look at how the global Chinese diaspora celebrates the Lunar New Year in cities such as London, Vancouver, Beijing, Seoul and Kuala Lumpur. From street parades to the food consumed, celebrations are as unique as the communities in each country. Next, read about the young Malaysian lady who practises the art of mask changing, or bianlian, a 300-year-old Chinese national heritage unique to Sichuan opera. She’s listed in Malaysia’s Book of Records for having achieved 14 costume changes in a minute! I’m sure I can only manage all of two within that time. If you believe in Chinese Metaphysics and want to know what’s in store for you in the new year, check out our interview with best-selling author and master in his field, Dato’ Joey Yap, where he also gives his predictions for each of the 12 Chinese zodiac signs. There are more stories related to Chinese New Year in this issue. I hope they keep you entertained throughout your flight with us. If you are celebrating, we wish you a Happy and Prosperous Chinese New Year. If you are not, please visit an open house for the experience. Wear red and let the feasting begin! ■
On The Cover From Vancouver to Kuala Lumpur, about two billion Chinese around the world will usher in the Year of the Boar on 5 February.

Saya bangga terbang bersama Malaysia Airlines, kuasa penerbangan peneraju negara Malaysia.

Over the last 10 years, I have been travelling between my work base in Qatar and hometown Kuching on a monthly basis. Most of the time, I have ignored the in-flight magazine due to either nonchalance or simply preferring sleeping to reading. A chance browsing of the magazine on one of the balik kampung trips, however, changed my outlook of Going Places as it gave me insight on the international destinations serviced by Malaysia Airlines from our own KLIA. I am now in the midst of planning a trip to such a destination with my wife for our 20th anniversary as life partners. With the added benefit of being a Sapphire One World member, I look forward with bated breath to experiencing the renowned excellent service by Malaysia Airlines. ZULKARNAIN SULAIMAN, Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia
It was my first time flying with Malaysia Airlines last August 2018, going to Nepal via Kuala Lumpur for a work-related trip. I rarely fall asleep during flights, so I appreciate good in-flight entertainment, and Malaysia Airlines has quite a good selection of movies, TV shows and music. I've been busy with work and the only time I get to watch new movies is when I am travelling, so I really appreciate the updated movie selections of airlines I take. During my flight with Malaysia Airlines, I enjoyed watching several movies and I felt bad I didn't get to finish the last movie. There were still 20 minutes left of the flight and I was watching even after the plane had landed and we were waiting to disembark. I couldn't find that movie anywhere and I really want to see how it ends (it was a Korean film). Maybe I will only be able to see the ending if I fly Malaysia Airlines again soon. IRISH R. Street Carnival Despite its origins as a procession to celebrate the birthdays of Chinese deities, the annual Chingay Parade has turned into a multi-cultural national event in Singapore and the largest street performance and float parade in Asia. Held on the first weekend of the Lunar New Year, the street parade is an event celebrated by ethnic Chinese, Malays, Indians, Eurasians and even foreign groups. The lighting up of Penang’s iconic Kek Lok Si Temple during Lunar New Year adds a festive air to the already popular state attraction. Tens of thousands of Chinese lanterns and a colourful array of lights transform the 128-year-old temple grounds into a magical land of lights when the sun goes down. With the support of the state government, the Kek Lok Si Temple has observed this tradition annually for over 40 years. The temple’s usual opening hours will be extended until late during this period to allow visitors to view the lights at night.
Mix Shakespearean comedy with a wacky cast of cyclists and you get an adaptation of Twelfth Night by the HandleBards, hosted by Gardner & Wife Theatre. The HandleBards, a U.K.-based troupe of cycling actors who carry all their sets, props and costumes for their outdoor Shakespeare performances, will crank up the humour by acting out Twelfth Night’s complicated love story with an all-male cast, clad in stockings, suspenders and an array of funny costumes. Bring the whole family and have a laugh at this zany interpretation of a Christmas-time Shakespearean classic.

A Latino-Asian Love Affair As one of KL’s more inventive restaurants, Mr Chew’s Chino Latino Bar on Jalan Bukit Bintang has introduced KL-ites to a unique fusion of Asian-Latin American cuisine, resulting in signatures like the Nori Taco, Catfish Char Siew Bao, and Mr Chew’s Famous Fried Chicken Ribs. Its executive chef James Thong recently introduced a new range of dishes that furthers Mr Chew’s bold and creative reputation, among them starters like gochujang chicken-stuffed steamed bun with pickled pumpkin and chestnut, and tawai salad with shredded apple, pear, sprouts, palm heart and fragrant coconut fish sauce. The mains feature additions like fried whole golden snapper with dill and leek, and sizzling wagyu striploin with sweet Palermo pepper, cashew nuts, dragon leaf and coriander salad. Dessert fans shouldn’t miss out on the intriguing Sesame Chocolate Noodles (above, right) or the Coconut & Mango Ice Kacang, made with fresh mango, young coconut flesh and almond nibs. mr-chew.com

Pop Goes The chef
For a grand night out in Sydney, head to the city’s Pyrmont waterfront to find LuMi, an Italian restaurant that’s acknowledged as one of the best outside Italy. There’s much to admire about the intimate setting and dishes prepared by chef Federico Zanellato, who brings a global and modern approach to Italian cuisine, thanks to his experience in Japan’s RyuGin, Denmark’s Noma and Australia’s Attica. His Italian cuisine with Japanese influences is best enjoyed in his eight-course dinner degustation, where deceptively named dishes like Tuna, Jerusalem Artichoke, Spanner Crab Chawanmushi, Brioche, Asparagus and Ravioli are presented in ways worthy of its Two Hats status.
If you like your meals with a show, book a seat at the Le Petit Chef Pop-Up Dining experience in Melbourne’s Cardigan Place Cellars. The pop-up dining concept, now in its final month in Australia, has been a hit with diners across the world, having surfaced in London, Berlin, Toronto and Dubai previously. Designed by creative studio Skullmapping, the experience has you seated at a white tableclothed dinner table, upon which is projected a 3D animation of a 58mm miniature chef who then catches, prepares and cooks dinner before your eyes while telling you the story of how the dish came to be. Guests can expect Le Petit Chef to whip up three courses, including a bouillabaisse, glazed brisket with broccolini, and a caramelised milk ice cream with whipped cream and berries. There’s also an Australian wine pairing or non-alcoholic cocktail pairing on offer to complement the meal.

Tip-Top Tea
The Kuala Lumpur suburb of Taman Tun Dr Ismail has more than a few gems, the latest of which is Ember Modern Bistro. Helmed by chef-owner Gabriel Anwar, who worked under Jeff Ramsey in KL’s Babe restaurant, Ember brings together Gabriel’s love for Asian ingredients and tapas-style dishes. Almost every dish is a standout: start off light with a bowl of cold noodles served with tender duck confit, fresh pear and citrus ponzu; smoked beef tartare made from Darling Downs MB7 Wagyu short-ribs; and eggplant salad and sesame-miso dressing. Those who love meat won’t be disappointed by the Darling Downs MB4 Wagyu flank steak served with smoked beef vinaigrette, or the kampung chicken with yuzu kosho tare. End your meal on sweet, salty and decadent notes by having the Chocolate Cremeaux with Miso and Popcorn, or choose the pleasing combination of Coconut Panna Cotta and Grapefruit Jelly.
Celebrate the Lunar New Year in style at The Hotel Windsor in Melbourne, where a special afternoon tea menu is served just for the season. Available from 5 to 19 February, the afternoon tea features sweet and savoury treats inspired by the hotel’s early days during the gold rush in the 1880s, showcasing a modern spin on traditional Chinese favourites. Savoury dishes created by head chef Khanh Nguyen of the award-winning Sunda restaurant include mushroom XO rice ball with soy milk custard, and prawn toast with sweet and sour sauce. Sandwiches include fillings of egg, egg yolk jam, soy paste and coriander. Dessert comes in the form of ‘Koi’, a dessert made by Pastry Chef Jérémie Parmentier that comprises fresh pineapple compote, kaffir lime, strawberry confit, matcha sponge and vanilla ganache.

Immersed In Art It’s your last chance to catch German artist Katharina Grosse’s vast exhibition at the chi K11 art museum in Shanghai. Supported by the K11 Art Foundation, Mumbling Mud is an expansive show that truly immerses the visitor in a labyrinth of colour, cloth and surreal shapes. The show sees Grosse thoroughly explore her statement: “A painting can land anywhere – on an egg, in the crook of the arm, along a train platform, in snow and ice, or on the beach.” Mumbling Mud is divided into five sections: Underground, Ghost, Silk Studio, Stomach and Showroom. Each zone features a different kind of canvas, from soil and rubble in the first to fabric in the middle and a lavish living room in the last. By covering each canvas with colourful paint, Grosse creates vast, site-related paintings of which the visitor is at the centre. Dark Matters
Hailing from Berlin, Bastian Gallery opens a London-based branch this month, and its inaugural exhibition celebrates the limitless creativity of pop art icon Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol Polaroid Pictures features some 60 Polaroid photographs from Warhol’s private collection, many of which have never been exhibited before. The show offers an intimate and fabulous impression of 1960s and 1970s New York, with portraits of some of the 20th century’s most iconic movers and shakers, including Pablo Picasso and Yves Saint Laurent. Warhol is known for documenting his life during this period of intense creativity, his images allowing the viewer an insight into his world.
Fans of Edgar Allan Poe and Gothic themes must go to Matthew Krishanu’s exhibition at the IKON Gallery in Birmingham. A Murder of Crows features dozens of Krishanu’s macabre and mischievous painted crows. The artist takes inspiration for his birds from literary texts such as Crow by Ted Hughes and Poe’s The Raven, as well as visions of the birds from Krishanu’s childhood in Bangladesh. The neo-Gothic IKON Gallery serves as the perfect nesting place for Krishanu’s crow army, with the impish images looking menacingly down on visitors below.

Finest Hour The prestigious de Young Fine Art Museum in San Francisco hosts the first exhibition dedicated to the final phase of Claude Monet’s career from 1913 to 1926. Monet: The Late Years gathers some 60 of the late master’s works, including 20 examples of his best-loved water lily paintings. Monet’s later years were plagued by deteriorating eyesight, and it was during this time he aspired to create work on a much larger scale. His style evolved, becoming more tonally intense and his brush-strokes more apparent. Exhibition curator George T. M. Shackelford (also deputy director of the Kimbell Art Museum) explains: “The last dozen years of Monet’s life were a challenging time for the painter, but they were also among the most triumphant of his long career – because in his mid-70s, Monet decided to reinvent himself, mining his past, yet creating works that looked like nothing he had ever done before.”
The Art Gallery of Western Australia presents Desert River Sea: Portraits of the Kimberley, a highly anticipated exhibition that serves as the culmination of the gallery’s six-year-long project to promote and cultivate indigenous art across the Kimberley region. The show gathers work from three independent artists and from six of the region’s finest art centres, offering visitors a rare overview of the cultural landscape in this corner of Australia. Desert River Sea: Portraits of the Kimberley is an exhibition that celebrates the Kimberley culture that has been shaped by the people and their relationship with the land. The show opens with a host of artist talks, presentations, performances and family-friendly activities.

Big-time Capital Beijing is massive in size, sights and history. Strap on your Fitbit, grab your walking shoes and hit the pavement to explore the wonders of China’s capital city. Words Sara Naumann | Illustration Maggie Li | Art Direction Euric Liew
also a UNESCO site, southwest of the city centre, boasts unique round architecture and a cobalt colourway. Next, make a stop at the Lama Temple, a Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) Tibetan Buddhist temple with outstanding artistry and carvings. For dinner, finish the day at TRB Hutong (Temple Restaurant Beijing) for haute cuisine set in a restored 600-yearold temple.
Gardens Grand & Charming

To see how rich royals spent their summer holidays, head northwest of the city centre to the Summer Palace, another UNESCO site where Qing courtiers whiled away hot summer days, passing under the 728-metre Long Corridor, admiring hand-painted crossbeams and boating on the manmade Kunming Lake. To take in a classical garden on a less imperial scale, head to peaceful Ritan Park just west of the Forbidden City. Arrive early in the morning to watch some of Beijing’s older generation practising Tai Chi or ballroom dancing. If it’s scenery you’re after, climb the hill at Jingshan Park just outside the north gate of the Forbidden City, for unparalleled views of the royal rooftops.

Revolutionary Road To Imperial Keep Begin your Beijing tour with revolutionary PRC history at Tian’anmen Square. This enormous plaza is infamous for the 1989 student protests but is now kept peaceful by roaming plain-clothes police. Get your Beijing bearings by starting at the southern side of the square and begin walking north through the middle. You’ll pass the Great Hall of the People on the west side and the National Museum of China on

the east. Along your path through the square, you’ll be able to visit the Mao Zedong Mausoleum, where you can glimpse the embalmed body of the Chairman himself. After you’ve left the square and crossed West Chang’an Avenue, you’ll find yourself standing in front of the iconic Chairman Mao portrait at the Gate of Heavenly Peace. This imposing entrance is your entrée to the Forbidden City. Walk through the gate of
this UNESCO World Heritage Site and the enormity of the imperial compound becomes obvious. Spend the rest of the day exploring the gardens and pavilions where 24 successive Ming and Qing dynasty courts ruled until 1911, when the last Qing emperor fell.
Now that you’ve maxed out culturally, it’s time to buy some souvenirs. The ancient alleys of Liulichang, where Ming scholars and academics used to congregate, is a lovely place to check out old bookshops, bargain for curios and pick up traditional memorabilia. For something more modern, head to Nan Luo Gu Xiang, another alley; this one is full of terrace cafés and hip boutiques selling the wares of local designers.
A Market Like No Other You might have tasted the power of bargaining already, so take it big time at Panjiayuan Market.
Temples Blue, Buddhist & Delectable Now that you’ve had a tour of government seats past and present, make temples your next adventure. The Temple of Heaven,

Beijing Kao Ya – Yum! You must eat Beijing Roast Duck (kao ya) at least once. Da Dong is the traditional favourite with branches across the city. Gallery-hopping is a recent Beijing pursuit and you can make an afternoon of it perusing the 798 Art District. Once the home of Beijing’s most cutting-edge artists,
it’s now a bit more commercial. You can still find some of Beijing’s most interesting galleries inside this compound of repurposed factory buildings.
Urban Lake Swimming Does anything sound crazier than urban lake swimming in Beijing? How about in January? Houhai is a small lake in central Beijing, surrounded by lively cafés in summer and the site for fun ice activities in the winter, including dips in frigid waters. Bring your swimwear if you’re ready to become a true Beijinger.
While technically “beyond” Beijing, a visit to the Great Wall must be worked into any trip to the Middle Kingdom. There are many “sections” to see, some more popular than others. Mutianyu is a section that bears plenty of guard towers, steep sets of stairs and incredible mountain views. Walk or take the chairlift to the top and then enjoy an alpine toboggan ride back down to the car park. ■

If the weather cooperates, Beijing by bicycle is the best way to get around. With large avenues filled with stopped traffic, biking is both efficient and enjoyable. Bike Beijing (bikebeijing.com) offers tours, but you can also use the plentiful share bikes parked all over the city. With an English interface, Mobike is the easiest to use. You’ll need a Chinese digital way to pay (see Travel Tips) and you’re off.

Travel Tips:
Stay Connected If roaming with your mobile plan is too expensive, look into renting a mobile WiFi unit at the airport when you arrive. Available as you exit the airport, these units are inexpensive to rent and can provide excellent WiFi for everyone in your party. There will be a place to return the unit when you leave Beijing (but you must be flying in and out of the same airport!).

Very Useful App If you download only one app in advance, make it WeChat. Ubiquitous in China, locals use it to do everything (hail cars, top up their mobile phones, pay bills, order food, etc.). If you use it for nothing else, WeChat’s translate function is really useful. Hit “Scan” and choose “Translate” and you’ll have a translation of whatever your camera is facing or any photo you take. This can help you avoid ordering duck tongue when you wanted chicken breast! Another fabulous WeChat function is “Payment”. You can add your credit card, and voila! You can pay for everything via WeChat. Every vendor uses it these days. They might be surprised at your cash.
Getting Around If you’re trying to fit in a lot of sights that are spread out (say the Temple of Heaven, then the Summer Palace), it’s worth looking into hiring a driver for the day (enquire at your hotel). The subway is an excellent and inexpensive way to get around, so make sure to download a Beijing Metro map. DiDi is China’s answer to Uber. Available with an English interface, you can link your credit card to the app for payment.

Predictions Forecasts & Could the Year of the Boar mark the end of social media’s reign? Author and Chinese Metaphysics consultant Dato’ Joey Yap says personal interactions are set to make a comeback in the new lunar year, amongst other predictions. Interview Julie Goh | Photography courtesy of Dato’ Joey Yap
goingplacesmagazine.com | 30 | February 2019
Dato’ Joey, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you came into the business of Chinese Metaphysics.
I grew up in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Throughout my childhood, I have always been intrigued by abstract sciences and the principles of the universe that are beyond what are being taught in school labs. At the age of 15, I began selfstudying from books and all written references I could find on classical Feng Shui and Chinese Metaphysics. By the age of 17, I had learned to source out various classical literatures in Chinese metaphysic science and teachings, which enabled me to continue with this path.
Yap's seminars transcend age, gender and race
At the age of 20, while studying accounting in Australia, where everyone else was working in cafés or within the campus, I was providing Feng Shui consultations all over Australia. I graduated at the age of 22 and faced my biggest dilemma. Everyone I knew was joining MNCs or The Big Five. The closest people around me told me to get a real job and to join the workforce, not to waste my time as this path does not earn a decent living. They told me it’s a hobby that I should forgo. They said no one wants to be known as a 'fortune teller’, nor will one ever become financially independent being a Feng Shui consultant.
But by the age of 26, just a few short years after graduating, I proved my detractors wrong. I had made my first million. Of course, there were challenges over the years, and though the initial struggle was to stabilise the business and to grow it to where it is today, I realised too that my true mission is to use my knowledge in Feng Shui and Chinese Metaphysics to change lives. And we are continuously striving to improve. We use the latest technology and innovations to try to reach out to a larger number of people, to introduce the Feng Shui techniques that have already helped thousands of people all over the world to improve their lives. How do you see the Year of the Boar? What are some of the noteworthy events that could take place this year around the world?
There will be increased restrictions and limitations on the Internet and tech-related industries due to the clash between the water and fire elements. There will also be an increase in reported illnesses, particularly those that are easily communicable. Tourism and the transportation sector will see good growth. People will start leaning towards and be attracted to old-school catch-ups in person. We will start to value the personal touch of friendship again and move away from the superficiality of social media. We will become more emotional at the same time, more compassionate too. What about for Malaysia? What’s in store for us?
The sluggishness of 2018 will still be felt in 2019, but keep an eye out because you will see that there are businesses that have

Dato’ Joey Yap’s Chinese Astrology Forecast for 2019 quietly grown their revenue. There will be lots of opportunities – for those who are focused on the opportunities (as opposed to listening to the white noise of negativity) – especially to do with financial avenues for growth, potential new businesses and startups. Be careful, however, and dig a little deeper when choosing to invest in these startups or new businesses. They may appear to have great potential, but it could be a lot of hot air and marketing. In 2019, it is crucial to focus on the fundamentals – is the business model itself viable?
goingplacesmagazine.com | 32 | February 2019
Don’t rush into a business just because you have seen a successful one elsewhere – in other words, don’t be a ‘me too’ business. For instance, don’t try to start a new ride-hailing app unless your concept and idea are really unique. Instead, focus inwardly – on your own business and skills. Focus on improving your own enterprise – what can you do better to improve your business and grow revenue? Look at new innovative ideas – and look externally, get some new voices and ask people for advice as well. There will be a resurgence and focus on education as well. What about for businesses? Any particular strategy that companies or businesses should adopt? We’re speaking generally, of course.
Businesses should take a prudent approach to spending, with a strong focus on cashflow. Investments that are conservative or low-risk may seem unsexy but may have strong pay-offs in the longer run. Tech companies may need to engage closely with governmental stakeholders to overcome possible restrictions. Those with cash and liquidity will find lots of bargains onhand next year – the slower property market will see lots of opportunities for those with a long-term view. Your talks and seminars transcend age, culture and profession. Why do you think people are fascinated with what they don’t know or possibly can’t control? Or can we control our destiny?
I actually think it’s the other way around. People are fascinated by the fact that what I teach actually helps them to change their Destiny or their Lives – for the better. When I first started out, I had to work hard to change the perception that your Destiny is ‘fated’ or that it’s written in stone. It’s not. That’s why I had to educate clients that what we do is a Destiny Analysis, not fatalistic fortune-telling. That the actions we take, based on our Destiny Chart, will actually lead to a better outcome – the outcome that we would like to envision for ourselves. The fascination many people have is one that has been present for centuries – people everywhere want to grow. And in wanting to do so, they want to understand their personal potential, so that they can tap into it and help them grow. And the outcome of this growth is happiness. ■

There’s a difference in what you mean, what you say, what you heard and what is understood. In other words, make sure whatever you’re trying to communicate this year is crystal clear. That aside, your artistic flair is set to flourish this year, so indulge in that facet of your life whether in your career or as a hobby. Keep your emotions in check so that you won’t step on anyone’s toes.
Sometimes the root of the problems we encounter are not external, but internal. It’s a good time for you to do some selfreflection to get to the bottom of your worries. Before you decide on anything, take your time to do proper research. Whatever challenges you might have in 2019, confront them from the angle of patience and tolerance.

Invest, invest and invest; now is the time for you to grow your wealth and you are encouraged to take up stocks and valuable properties. But before you do so, make sure you read up on what you are investing in and at the same time, seek advice from qualified friends. There will be some petty people who would gossip about you behind your back, but they won’t be able to harm you if you are able to ignore them.
For all your hard work, people might not always notice you; but that would change this year. Know that it is finally time for you to be recognised for your efforts. Guidance and support are readily available from those closest to you so don’t be shy if ever you need help. Though things are looking good overall, it doesn’t hurt to be careful with your words and actions.

Ever wanted to pick up a new skill? If so, 2019 would be the year for you. Anything that is to do with research, academia or learning, this year would be especially conducive for those pursuits. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that this is great news for researchers and students! Even though there’s a boost in your intelligence, you still need to be smart with your money and keep track of your finances.
DOG 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006 Whatever plans you have in store for this year, you might need to prepare yourself for delays and setbacks. It’s not perfect, but it’s not the end of the world either; just be flexible and at the same time ready with multiple back-up plans. You wouldn’t know how brightly you can shine if you never put yourself to the test and face adversaries.
BOAR 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007 Things might not go as planned but that’s simply how life is. You will be able to brace through this year with ample planning and clarity of mind. Don’t let your emotions get in the way of your success and strive for quality. The challenges you face might seem overwhelming at first, but they can easily be broken down if you were to handle it one problem at a time.
RAT 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008 It’s an ideal year to realise your ambitions and advance in your career. As your social circle is set to grow this year, take the opportunity to make the best out of it. While you should go all out in terms of career, be more conservative when it comes to investment. As success never happens alone, remember to appreciate those who have supported you in your journey.
It’s going to be a fantastic year ahead in almost all aspects of your life! As things are going good for you, try not to ruin it by cutting corners or taking risky actions. Every decision you make should be based on rational and logical thinking, rather than your emotions. Keep these up and you will be able to realise any goal you have set.
DRAGON 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012 The main theme for you this year is relationships. Which relationship? All of it! Whether it is someone special, the people you work with or just casual friendships, all of these are set to prosper in 2019. Capitalise on this opportunity by making the right connections. While you are out there meeting new people or old friends, keep an eye on your wallet though.
SNAKE 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013 They say tough times build character, so this would be a good year to build yours! Your luck might not be as glamourous as everyone else’s but that does not mean you won’t be able to persevere this year. When it comes to planning and expectations, keep it realistic and you will be okay, just remember to take on only what you are able to bear.
HORSE 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014 You can expect a great year ahead if you take the initiative instead of horsing around. The more effort you put into your work, the greater the return would be. Being graced by such good luck this year, problems can be dealt with easily. While you won’t have any problems with getting things started, make sure the execution of your plans is done carefully so as not to have it blow up in your face.

Festival Words Charles Young | Photography 123rf
Feb 2019_EXPLORE CNY Around The World02.indd 35
On 5 February, almost a quarter of the world’s population will celebrate the Lunar New Year, resulting in the largest annual migration of humans on the planet. While most nations celebrate the New Year according to the solar-based Gregorian calendar on 1 January, China, Korea, Vietnam and several other Asian countries will celebrate the Lunar New Year based upon the ancient Chinese one.
for the Chinese. The money inside is always an even number (an odd number is for funerals) and any amount containing the number eight is especially lucky. It’s common now that in online group chats, digital red envelopes are distributed, with the fastest responder getting to keep the cash. Children are also gifted with new clothes as it’s thought to bring fortune and good health for the coming year.
The most vivid images we have of this festival are the noisy parades featuring dragon dancers snaking down lantern-bedecked streets to the cacophony of popping fireworks and ringing gongs that are sounded to frighten away evil spirits. Most major cities across the world now have one, with the biggest outside Asia being in London, San Francisco, Sydney and Vancouver, though you’ll also find it celebrated in places as diverse as Kolkata, Santo Domingo, San Francisco and more or less everywhere you find ethnic Chinese or Vietnamese.
Food is another important aspect, with the north of China favouring the consumption of dumplings, while in the south, glutinous New Year cakes are more popular, though other regional specialities vary from place to place. Special desserts are also prepared, often with names similar to auspicious words such as tangyuan (soup balls), which sounds like tuanyuan (meaning “reunion”), or fa gao, a type of cake whose first syllable is the same as in fa cai, meaning “get rich quick”.
Like Christmas or Eid, this is traditionally the holiday when families get together and exchange gifts. This mass migration is most obvious in China itself, where during the Spring Festival, over 200 million people travel across the country, meaning it’s vitally important to book transport well ahead of the festivities.
The main meal, however, is on New Year’s Eve, when family tables are laden with the most sumptuous food, often featuring some kind of hotpot, whose communal nature symbolises the coming together of the family. Of course, the ancestors eat first, and food and drink are symbolically offered to them before everyone else tucks in.
Red is a very popular colour during this time. Alongside the wearing of red clothes, and the hanging of red lanterns in the street and red paper duilian (paper strips marked with auspicious poetry) outside the door, the most popular aspect of the Lunar New Year is the exchange of red envelopes filled with “lucky money” – the commonest form of gift-giving
Although traditional rituals and religious observances are slowly making a comeback in mainland China, the most ritualised celebration of the New Year is found in South Korea. Known as Seollal, it typically falls on the same date as Lunar New Year, and like in China, it’s a time of mass migration to family reunions, and over half the population will be on the move over

the three-day public holiday. The focus of the Korean celebration is tradition, with respect given to both elders and ancestors, and it’s one of the occasions when many Koreans wear the traditional hanbok dress. Food offerings and deep bows are made to ancestors, while children give similar bows and respect to elders who reciprocate with gifts of money in traditional silk bags, along with words of wisdom for the future generation. They also indulge in time-honoured pastimes that include the playing of special board games such as the ludo-like yutnori and the flying of kites, though young Koreans are more likely to be playing online games. The New Year also symbolises getting a year older, which is why a Korean’s age is usually one year more than their “international age”, as they gain a year after finishing the tteokguk soup that is drunk at this time.
In Malaysia, the Lunar New Year is celebrated similarly to China, though the Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian temples are more of a focus. People are likely to visit the colourfully decorated and brightly lit temples as part of their celebrations, with those on Petaling Street in Kuala Lumpur and in George Town in Penang especially popular. Another unique feature of the Malaysian Lunar New Year, popularly referred to as Chinese New Year (often abbreviated to CNY), is that due to the multicultural society, many Chinese invite not only their own families to their homes but have “open houses”, where neighbours and even strangers are welcome, whatever their religious or cultural background. They also eat a unique dish called yee sang, a mixture of raw fish and different vegetables, which guests toss in the air with their chopsticks; the higher it’s tossed means the more good luck, health and prosperity they will enjoy in the coming year. Although Vietnam’s Tet Nguyen Dan, or the Feast of the First Morning of the First Day, shares many of the aspects of Lunar New Year, such as ancestor worship, family reunions, red envelopes, noisy parades and visiting temples, it also has a few idiosyncrasies, such as the New Year tree, a long bamboo pole adorned with various objects such as good luck charms, paper animals or tree branches. Flowers are also a popular decoration for the inside of homes, and blossoms are often brought in to symbolise fertility and fruitfulness. The Vietnamese also believe that the first person invited into your house sets the tone for the following year, so it is considered a great honour to be asked. Given the global nature of this festival, you’ll always be near the celebration, and it’s well worth experiencing a Lunar New Year parade at least once in your life, whether you’re in Asia, Europe or the Americas. ■

Bar the fireworks at midnight that herald its arrival, celebrations for the Lunar New Year in China are surprisingly muted. In the mainland, where it is more commonly known as Spring Festival, festivities are very much in the home and revolve around families coming together and sharing food. Despite this, the world has embraced the festival, and come 5 February, millions will flock to Chinatowns around the world to join exuberant celebrations marking the start of the Year of the Boar. One unifying aspect is the importance of food. However, for most mainland Chinese, where jiaozi (steamed or boiled dumplings stuffed with meat and vegetables) usually take centre stage, much of the food enjoyed in these Chinatowns would seem like exotic foreign food.
Some dishes such as yee sang (yusheng) are special for the celebrations. Popular in Malaysia and Singapore, the name literally means raw fish, but the Chinese characters are also a homophone for “abundance”. Topped with raw fish, it largely consists of a salad with a unique sweet and slightly sour taste. “It is tossed together as high as possible while saying auspicious phrases that will bring good luck, good life, health and prosperity for the new year,” says Justin Hor, Executive Chef of Oriental Group of Restaurants.
goingplacesmagazine.com | 37 | February 2019
What people eat around the world at Lunar New Year for good fortune may not have originated from China.
Chinese make up the second largest ethnic community in Malaysia, and yee sang is loosely based on a dish from Guangdong Province, China. “Due to the weather in the country and the abundance of food during Lunar New Year, yee sang is believed to have been created by the early immigrant generations to increase one’s appetite before the other dishes, which will usually consist of meat and seafood,” explains Hor. In American Chinatowns, General Tso’s chicken is a firm favourite. It is not necessarily associated with Lunar New Year but will be one of the likeliest dishes for locals to order. The dish, though, is unheard of in China and is based on a dish invented in Taiwan by Peng Chang-kuei (Peng Zhanggui) before arriving in the U.S. in the 1970s. “It is sweet. It is fried. And it is chicken. All things Americans love,” explains Jennifer Lee, producer of the documentary The Search for General Tso. Named after Zuo Zongtang, a 19th-century military leader and statesman from Hunan with a supposed love of eating chicken, the dish was popularised in the U.S. by restaurateur T.T. Wang

and modified for American tastes. “The Taiwan version is not as sweet, not as fried and has skin and bone. Also, there is no broccoli!” says Lee. In London, another bird takes centre stage. Aromatic crispy duck pancakes are probably the most-ordered dish in a Chinese takeaway or restaurant nationwide. The dish combines elements of both Peking duck and xiang su ya, a duck dish popular in Sichuan, Hunan and Jiangsu provinces. The meat has less fat and is drier and crispier than that of Peking duck. It is shredded rather than carved, and its popularity has a lot to do with the pancake element, as well as with the cucumber and spring onions. For restaurants, this version speeds up and simplifies the labourintensive preparation of Peking duck, with the use of steaming followed by deep-frying rather than oven-roasting. Holes poked in the skin allow the marinade to reach the meat. While Mauritian gato arouille may sound like a French dish, it is very much a product of the multi-ethnic Indian Ocean island nation, where the Chinese started arriving in the late 19th century from the south of China. Although eaten all year round and no longer just served by the Chinese diaspora, it features very much as part of the celebrations. Made from grated taro root and deep-fried into ball-shaped fritters, it is very
different from typical Chinese ways of preparing taro; the closest Chinese equivalent is a street snack of deep-fried daikon radish (luobosi youdunzi). Royal Street in Port Lois plays host to Chinatown and is the epicentre for Mauritians celebrating Lunar New Year. Yokohama in Japan has often served as a conduit for new foods entering through its busy port. Home to Asia’s largest Chinatown, it hosts large-scale celebrations for Lunar New Year, with visitors flocking to the many restaurants. “These days, relatives gather at Chinese restaurants rather than giving parties at home, so it’s very crowded,” says Dan Takamune, a member of the Yokohama Chinatown Development Association and General Manager of local restaurant Kin Gen Rou. They eat dishes like gomoku ankake soba (chop suey noodles), a very popular dish in Japan consisting of meat and seafood with vegetables in a thick sauce over noodles, or fried noodles in the case of the yakisoba version. “Japanese people are fond of noodles with a muddled topping (chop suey),” says Takamune, adding that they are quite different from any noodle dishes in China.

Today, as any Korean will tell you, jjajangmyeon is one of the most popular orders at any Chinese restaurant in the country. Incheon is home to the Jjajangmyeon Museum and the city’s Chinatown has various restaurants famous for the dish. However, the Shandong Province natives who first brought zha jiang mian to Incheon would be hard pushed to recognise today’s dish of spaghetti-like noodles topped with a thick black sauce containing meat and vegetables and crowned with julienned cucumber. According to Kim Younghee, manager of the Jjajangmyeon Museum, the key is the sauce. “Korean-style jjajangmyeon is made with chunjang (a sweet bean sauce infused with black caramel sauce), which is really addictive and suits the Koreans’ taste,” she says.
American thing, proudly Made in the USA, and founded in San Francisco,” says Kevin Chan, manager of Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory, which still makes the cookies by hand in the heart of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Both San Francisco and Los Angeles vie for being first with the cookies, but the originator may well have been a Japanese rather than Chinese immigrant. According to a popular San Francisco version, the inventor was Makoto Hagiwara. “We can all agree Chinese-Americans took a flat cookie, creatively folded and stuffed it with a fortune printed on a paper, and branded it as a fortune cookie to bring good fortunes to those who would consume it at Chinese restaurants – it’s a brilliant example of how innovation works in San Francisco,” says Chan. ■
Any Lunar New Year feast should be rounded out with dessert; yet the fortune cookie, probably the most famous “Chinese sweet” in the world, is unheard of in China. “Fortune cookies are an

such as the opening of a new business, to welcome important guests at auspicious celebrations, and in competitions.

Draped in an elaborate costume, two dancers play the lion – one as the head, the other the tail. Accompanied by the cymbals and drums, the dancers prance to the beat as they mimic the movements of a lion as it wakes, eats and gambols, while performing different stories for different occasions.
More than just a cultural tradition, the spectacular lion dance has evolved to become a sport-oriented activity.
The lion dance became popular in the 1970s in Malaysia, with master teachers from China coming over to train young enthusiasts. The art form climbed from height to height, with Malaysian lion dancers now regarded as among the world’s best, most daring and acrobatic.

If there’s one sound that tells you it’s the Lunar New Year in Malaysia, it’s the deafening clash of cymbals and deep rhythmic pounding of drums that accompany the lion dance. This acrobatic and joyful spectacle is an integral part of the festivities, and not to be missed. The lion dance migrated to Malaysia over a century ago with Chinese emigrants, but since then, it has evolved to have its own distinct identity. A heady spectacle of sights and sounds that will leave your heart pounding, it was listed as a national cultural heritage of Malaysia in 2007. “The lion dance of today is different from the past,” says lion dance master Siow Ho
Phiew, who teaches the art form and owns an acclaimed workshop, Wan Seng Hang Dragon & Lion Arts, which makes lion dance costumes. Siow is widely acknowledged as a master of his craft, having received an award for his work from the Malaysian Handicraft Development Board in 2011.
In Malaysia, the lion dance has evolved beyond being a Chinese cultural art form into an acrobatic sport participated by people of all races and cultures. Siow, who has taught many non-Chinese Malaysians, says the lion dance is as much about etiquette, grace and discipline as it is about culture.
In Malaysia, the lion dance is most often performed during the Lunar New Year, but it also makes an appearance at important events
His workshop, set up in 1986 to make lion costumes, makes about 300 elaborate costumes a year, highly sought for their intricate work and creativity.

Siow, 64, has been steeped in the artform since he was 17 years old. Over the decades, he has deepened his skills and knowledge, and still teaches today. He often spends his days in the cramped workshop, and when we met him, he was polishing glass eyes to be fitted into the lions’ heads.

Each head is handmade, beginning with rattan bent into a frame. Paper is wrapped around the frame and painted with intricate designs. The final product is a sight to behold – a fearsome lion’s head with eyes that blink and a mouth that moves. Thick fur and other adornments add to the mystique. There’s surprisingly a lot that can be tweaked to make the heads unique, from colours and patterns to individual flourishes. The colours may be the corporate colours of a customer, and the design may account for requests to incorporate specific symbols. The lion dance in Malaysia, as with the rest of Southeast Asia, is the Southern lion dance from Guangdong province in China. It has at least two styles, both of which are practised in Malaysia. The Northern lion dance is performed by male and female lions for the imperial court, with a shaggier costume. It is rarely performed in Malaysia. Traditionally, the Southern lion’s head comes in specific colours, drawing from the symbolism of historical characters of the Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE). The yellow lion with a white beard and colourful tail represents Liu Bei, the eldest brother in the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the white beard signifying his elderly age. His brother Guan Gong is symbolised by a red lion with a black beard, with the black beard symbolising youth. These traditional colour combinations aren’t often used today except for cultural events depicting traditional stories. Today, there are lions in all sorts of colours: lions in corporate blues, startlingly purple ones, shocking pink lions and even those adorned with LED lights. For competitions, red-and-gold with a bushy white fur trim is still the most popular choice for its striking appearance. The lions’ heads come in different sizes, with the smallest made to fit a child of nine to 10 years old. Siow’s busy workshop makes lion costumes for customers from as far as Hong Kong and China. They are sought after for their fine work, and

The final product is a sight to behold – a fearsome lion’s head with eyes that blink and a mouth that moves. also because Malaysian-made lion heads have evolved to have a distinct identity. In the distant past, during the days of the imperial dynasties in China, Siow said the movements of the lion dance often carried hidden meanings. Even the classic move of eating vegetables hid a political meaning as the word for vegetable in Chinese sounds similar to the name of a disliked imperial ruler. Today, the symbolism has changed, of course, even if the movements remain identical. The lion dance is performed to usher in prosperity and chase away bad fortune. The lion performs different moves, depending on the occasion. Typically, the lion is depicted as bold in seeking new experiences but cautious in studying his surroundings. In many performances, the lion dance still typically includes a segment where the lion clambers and jumps energetically to grab a lettuce dangled high above. The act of climbing is symbolic of reaching for greater heights, and the lettuce is a symbol for prosperity as its name in Chinese also sounds like creating wealth. The “eating” of the lettuce and the scattering of the shredded vegetable symbolise the spreading of prosperity. During the Lunar New Year, the lion also peels Mandarin oranges, a symbol for gold, as well as arranges the peeled oranges, pomelo or lettuce to present to the host as a symbol of good fortune. Siow says on specific occasions, the lion may
perform more intricate tasks. For instance, at the opening of a textile shop, it may cut a piece of cloth into a shape of an outfit. “There are other stories as well, such as the lion chasing away a snake or scorpion which symbolises bad fortune,” he says. For competitions, the performance may depict a lion climbing a high mountain in search of medicinal herbs or playing with water, to enable the performers to show off their acrobatic skills in dancing on high poles and across water. Siow says the skills level in Malaysia grew exponentially from the 1980s, when lion dance competitions were introduced. Malaysians organised the first international lion dance invitational in 1983, and since then, different troupes have vied for the top spot in the annual championships. “The performers worked hard to improve their skills, and they also learned from each other,” Siow said. He has come up with many popular new moves for his students, requiring them to undertake daring leaps and twirls on high poles. “If it’s a cultural event, it’s just for one community, but as a sport, everyone can take part.” As such, Siow says, old cultural taboos have vanished. If previously, women did not participate in the lion dance, it’s now common to find female performers. There was once even an all-woman troupe in Malaysia. “It’s all in here,” said Siow, tapping his forehead. “If you are doing something good with good intentions, then it is good. There are no taboos.” ■

When Chef Tommy Choong bounds into the restaurant, I’m surprised to see such a youthful head chef. Looking well below his 38 years, Choong recently took over the reins of Zuan Yuan’s kitchen, sprucing it up in preparation for the coming busy festive period. “I’m not as young as you think,” he says, grinning, when I comment on his appearance. “I’ve been toiling and working in hotel kitchens for as long as I can remember.” As a fresh college graduate, Choong started his culinary career in The Regent Kuala Lumpur (the hotel that used to occupy the premises of the present Grand Millennium Hotel) in 1999. With no formal culinary training, he had to start at the bottom rung in the dim sum kitchen.
From The Regent, Choong moved on to Mandarin Oriental Hotel Kuala Lumpur. In the kitchen of Lai Po Heen, the hotel’s Chinese

restaurant, he further honed his skills in fine Cantonese cuisine. The better part of the nine years he spent there as a sous chef was to assist in menu creativity and enhancing the repertoire of the restaurant’s a la carte dishes. Moving on, Choong did stints in Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur, Le Meridien Putrajaya and Four Seasons Kuala Lumpur. What’s the secret to memorable Chinese food? Choong smiles and shares that one of his sifus (mentors) always reminded him that “when we learn to cook, we become truly human, and when we cook well, humanity rejoices”. “It is that humanity, that personal touch, which makes all the difference between good and excellent, and I have always put a lot of heart to create that difference,” he adds. While he tries to keep to tradition in executing authentic Chinese dishes, Choong feels the goingplacesmagazine.com | 45 | February 2019
endless hours spent chopping, slicing and dicing everything in the vast kitchen, so much so that he’d often go to bed massaging his numb knuckles, stiff fingers and wrists. After almost a year, he had to undergo more training and went through the various levels of kitchen crew hierarchy before he was permitted to fold his first har kow (prawn dumpling). “The road to dim sum mastery was one that’s bumpy at every corner,” he reminisces. He recalls the many challenges along that journey, some so intense that they almost crippled his career. During the darkest phase, when self-doubt set in, he left the industry for a while to try out other jobs. However, those forays didn’t give him the same satisfaction. The call of the wok was so insistent that he ultimately found himself back.
While I sit and marvel at the repertoire of festive dishes whipped up for the coming Lunar New Year celebration in Zuan Yuan at the One World Hotel, I’m thinking it must have taken quite a bit of effort for the chef to curate the dishes. While waiting to meet the person behind the creativity, I can’t help but appreciate that every one of the dishes on the table has ‘tradition’ stamped all over it.

element of modernisation is never far away in today’s Chinese cuisine. “It is very difficult to actually serve a 100 percent authentic Chinese dish in a restaurant nowadays. Don’t get me wrong. I am all for tradition and authenticity. In fact, I want to preserve all the traditional elements as much as possible. But in today’s Chinese dining trend, for your dishes to stand out, there must be a good balance of localisation thrown in,” he says. By that, Choong elaborates that Malaysian Chinese chefs are innovative in the use of local ingredients to twist and balance the flavours of Chinese dishes. “Our strength lies in the clever use of local herbs and spices like lemongrass, curry leaves, chillies, turmeric and even pandan leaves in our dishes,” he says. “By delicately infusing these into age-old recipes, dishes unique only to this region have made their mark on the culinary trail.” goingplacesmagazine.com | 46 | February 2019
‘Balance’ is the key word, he warns. If there is one thing he abhors, it is the excessive use of heavy flavours and sauces in cooking. “Spices, herbs and sauces are meant to enhance the natural flavours of food, not to overwhelm!” This explains why two of the chef’s favourite dishes are fresh fish steamed with superior soya sauce and Hakka Lui Cha. “All that a fresh fish needs is light soya sauce! Let me tell you a secret. I never liked vegetables when I was young and refused to touch any as a kid. But somehow, as I grow older, I find a great affinity with the greens. That’s why I find the natural flavours of green vegetables in lui cha so refreshing and liberating! Just ask me if you ever want to know where to get the best lui cha in KL!” When he’s not working, Choong loves to watch culinary programmes on television to keep himself updated on what’s happening in the food world. He also likes to dive into books and magazines to feed his mind. “Life is a constant journey of learning and improving, and ever since I can remember, I have always been curious to know the whys and hows of everything,” he says. Away from the TV and books, the chef runs at least twice a week to keep fit. Although still relatively new in Zuan Yuan, Choong’s immediate responsibility is to create new dishes for the menu with a special emphasis on signature dishes for the restaurant. With the Lunar New Year coming up, he is busy curating celebratory dishes for the occasion. “Personally, the reunion meal is very important to me. It is this one meal in a year where family members gather together for that comforting reunion, and nothing is more comforting than having the traditional dishes one has grown up eating. Simple traditional dishes like poached chicken, braised mushrooms, stir-fried arrowhead and waxed meats – all these are must-haves during the reunion meal!” ■

Loo watched her first live bianlian performance when she was 15 years old. Hailing from a family in Malaysia’s entertainment industry, Loo was already a budding magician who loved picking up new skills. Though enthralled, she had no illusions about learning bianlian, a 300-year-old art unique to Sichuan opera. At that time, circa 2004-2005, bianlian was a fiercely guarded national heritage that was registered with China’s State Secrets Bureau and rarely taught to outsiders. Then fate intervened. The following year, her father, a show promoter, brought in acrobatic acts from China for a local show. The maskchanger had problems getting his assistant through immigration, so Loo was roped in as an assistant. The sifu (master) eventually agreed to accept her as an apprentice. Loo immediately travelled to Hebei, where her sifu taught at an acrobatic school, to learn the art. After just about a month of practice, Loo

Feb 2019_Warisan03.indd 50
took to the stage, only to falter in her first performance. “I was worried that my tall headgear would fall off, so I pressed it on too tight, causing the inner mechanics to malfunction,” she shares ruefully. “I tried to save the performance by strutting dramatically around the stage. Fortunately, the audience didn’t realise that the masks had not changed!” From a near-disastrous debut, Loo went on to become a celebrated mask changer. Her beguiling combination of youth, good looks and showmanship made her a natural media darling. Career highlights include demonstrating the art before Public Bank founder Teh Hong Piow, who was delighted when Loo changed to a mask of Teh’s face. Together with her business and life partner, fellow magician Mark Yong, Loo set up talent company Vivas Magic Entertainment, and they have performed in over 30 countries. One reason Loo’s audience keeps coming back for more is she continually introduces innovation to her routine. She designs and sews her own costumes and masks to incorporate more personal touches; one of her suits has a contemporary harlequin look as well as ultraviolet special effects! Another unique gimmick in her repertoire: after revealing her real face, she can “rewind”

to show one of the earlier masks. “This is a harder skill. Your hands must be fast and your brain must be alert. You cannot bungle up the sequence!” Understandably, Loo won’t reveal her trade secrets but accedes that “in mask changing, you must be very clear about the sequence of the masks from the innermost to the outermost.” She also acknowledges that the costume is linked to the masks and “a lot of body skills and hidden physical movements are involved.” Not content to be a one-trick pony, Loo recently introduced costume-changing into her repertoire. Applying some of the principles she learned from bianlian, Loo can change into multiple outfits in a matter of seconds; she is listed in the Malaysia Book of Records 2012 for achieving the most costumes changed
(14) within one minute, a record she has since broken informally. “There is no enchantment or witchcraft involved,” she smiles. “It’s just a matter of the hand being faster than the eye. Magic is the art of defying expectations and springing the element of surprise – you have to keep the audience guessing!” ■

Top Choice Malaysia Airlines has been recognised as one of the top 10 employers in the overall rankings at the Malaysia 100 Leading Graduate Employers Awards for 2018, up four spots from the previous year. The awards, which are endorsed and supported by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education, saw the airline included among the top three most preferred graduate employers in the Leisure, Travel and Hospitality category. It joins the list of renowned organisations that have received the awards in various categories, such as Maybank, PwC, Ernst & Young, Petronas and Deloitte.
Festive Cheer In conjunction with the festive season, Malaysia Airlines hosted 35 underprivileged children for a special celebration with its employees at the MAB Academy. The children, aged between 7 and 12, were from the Society of St Vincent de Paul in Taman Sri Manja, Petaling Jaya and council homes from Putra Damai Lembah Subang, Selangor. Apart from fun-filled activities and a tour of the Academy’s aircraft mockup area, the children were also treated to a surprise performance led by the cabin crew. The event was part of three corporate social responsibility activities conducted over the festive season, organised by Malaysia Airlines’ cabin crew community, WELKINs, as well as the In-flight Services department. The activities included fulfilling the children’s wishes and sending gifts to selected homes, as well as visiting the Orang Asli community in the Orang Asli Belihoi Settlement in the district of Mantin in Negeri Sembilan.

SAFETY + SERVICE INFO
CABIN LUGGAGE HANDLING Passenger and crew safety onboard our flights is our highest priority. In compliance with the airline’s policy and in observing Occupational, Safety and Health Regulations requirements, cabin crew are no longer required to stow passengers’ hand luggages into the overhead stowage compartment. This is to minimise occupational hazard and ergonomic risks faced by cabin crew in the aircraft. Cabin crew on duty will, however, assist passengers travelling with infants, young passengers travelling alone, the elderly, and passengers with reduced mobility. Passengers who are fit and in good health must carry, stow and secure their own hand luggages on board. Hand luggage exceeding the 7kg weight limit is required to be checked in before boarding.
PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PED) For safety reasons and in line with the Department of Civil Aviation guidelines, mobile phones and all PEDs must be switched off once aircraft doors are closed. Whilst cruising, devices placed in flight mode may be used. The devices must again be switched off during the approach for landing until the aircraft is parked at the terminal building. Devices transmitting strong signals must remain switched off throughout the flight, until disembarkation. The Captain may prohibit the use of devices that can interfere with the aircraft’s system.
LITHIUM BATTERIES Lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries for portable electronic devices (PEDs), including medical devices must not exceed 2g for lithium metal batteries and 100Wh for lithium ion batteries. All spare batteries, including lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries, for PEDs must be carried in passengers’ carry-on baggage only. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. For PEDs containing non-spillable batteries, they must be 12V or less or 100Wh or less. A maximum of two spare batteries may be carried. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.
ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES Electronic cigarettes must be carried on one’s person or in carry-on baggage only. Recharging of the device in-flight is not permitted.
ZERO TOLERANCE OF ABUSE We value courteousness. Any form of threat, verbal abuse or violence towards our staff will be taken seriously. We are committed to supporting anyone who has been the victim of an assault.

the restless energy, perfectionist drive and loneliness of Mercury with great poignancy. But it is when portraying the stage performances of Mercury that Malek truly delivers a doppelganger reminder of the late great singer. By a quirk of production scheduling, Malek’s first day of filming had to be the rendition of Queen’s performance at the Live Aid concert in Wembley Stadium in 1985. Talk about being dropped in at the deep end, because Mercury’s performance that day is widely regarded as one of the finest-ever live acts!
BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY The musical biopic is a difficult thing to pull off. A movie about the British rock band Queen and its lead singer Freddie Mercury needs to be sympathetic, even mythologising, to satisfy the die-hard fans, critical enough to satisfy the fence-sitters (me), and it must present the music as entirely fresh and relevant for a young audience that has never even heard of Queen. I’m not a huge fan of Queen, but Bohemian Rhapsody, just like Mercury’s remarkable voice, hits all the right notes. If you’re flying into London, then your luggage might be handled by a future Freddie Mercury, because that’s where we first meet him in the movie, as a Heathrow baggage handler. A poor boy from a not-entirely-poor Farsi family originally from Zanzibar, in 1970 the then-Farrokh Bulsara meets a failing band – then called Smile – and transforms it into Queen and himself into Freddie Mercury. With Mercury’s electric and larger-than-life personality and stage performances, the band quickly finds solid success before rising to stratospheric global heights with the release of its epic song Bohemian Rhapsody, which despite being over 40 years old is the moststreamed song from the 20th century at 1.6 billion streams. Rami Malek must win an Oscar for his portrayal of Mercury. (Editor's note: Oscars 2019 will take place on 24 Feb). He captures

Freddie Mercury experienced rock and roll’s highs and great lows. He was a gay man at a time when it had to be a guarded secret. He refused to allow his demise from AIDS define what he had been, and the movie respects that wish. Bohemian Rhapsody is as poignant, exultant, Scaramouche and Fandango as the song itself.
READY PLAYER ONE Many of the people who imagined and invented our future came of age in the long-ago 1970s and 1980s, a time of big hair, dial telephones and vinyl records (kids, ask your grandparents what’s a telephone). Their imaginations fuelled by the optimistic sci-fi of Walt Disney and Saturday morning kid’s TV shows like Flash Gordon In The 21st Century, the likes of Steve Jobs and the Silicon Valley
pioneers imagined a future of unlimited potential where computers could be owned by anyone, and filmmakers like Steven Spielberg created epic yet personal fantasies like E.T. and Close Encounters Of The Third Kind where aliens visited us with good intentions. The future was going to be good. And yet somewhere along the way, the imagined future became bleak and dystopian. There’s no fun with jet packs and flying cars, but instead it’s the barbarism of Maze Runner and The Hunger Games. With Ready Player One, director Steven Spielberg has imagined a world that is, yes, dystopian but with his customary touches of redemption and optimism. The future can be good again, if it’s switched off on Tuesdays and Thursdays – watch the movie and that’ll make sense. Based on Ernest Cline’s best-selling novel, the film is set in 2045 in a world that has been overwhelmed by a virtual reality game called Oasis. People no longer want to face their awful realities, and instead, they live inside an exciting virtual reality where they can do anything and be anyone. The game’s eccentric inventor and his company have become the richest in the world, but now he has died and bequeathed the whole thing to anyone who can solve three riddles inside Oasis. In steps our young and innocent hero. Ready Player One is a thrill-ride mix of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Tron and the ancient legend of King Arthur’s search for the Holy Grail (our hero’s Oasis avatar is Parzifal, the knight who eventually found the grail). Along the way there are dozens of 1980s pop culture references to things like The Shining, Duran Duran and The Breakfast Club. Our future can be good again, if we go back to the future.
Bohemian Rhapsody and Ready Player One are playing onboard. Check your in-flight entertainment system for channel information.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH
Multi-talented Malaysian singer Uriah See fell in love with music at a tender age. He started playing the piano at four, the violin at 10 and the guitar two years ago. Winner of the Astro Star Quest Chinese Singing Competition in 2014 and later, the TVB International Chinese New Talent Singing Championship in Hong Kong, the 23-year-old sits down with Going Places for a chat.
How and when did you first get into music?
I was four years old, the first few memories of me sitting by the piano, figuring out the sound of the keys. My mom is a piano teacher, so she taught me everything I had to learn about music. I am classically trained. I took up opera singing lessons at the age of six and learned to play the violin at 10. You went to South Korea earlier this year to undergo K-pop-style training. What was the experience like?
Your new image is very different from the past. What prompted this change?
I’ve always liked EDM – trap, future bass, K-pop – that kind of stuff. So I took the leap and tried it out. You not only sing but also act and host. Are they more challenging than singing?
I wouldn’t say so. I enjoy all of them just as much. What was the inspiration behind your new Now or Never single?
After being "stagnant" for about a year and a half, I poured all of my anxiety and frustration into this song, but in a positive manner. It’s a song about making things happen, and that the time is now. Otherwise, it’s never going to happen. It’s either you dream big or you go home.
goingplacesmagazine.com goingplacesmagazine.com || 77 77 || February January 2019 2019
All I can say is, all that you have heard about K-pop training is all true, from the vigorous training to the packed schedule of non-stop practice. Having said that, I did enjoy every moment of it.
You won Malaysia’s Astro Star Quest Chinese Singing Competition in 2014, then the TVB International Chinese New Talent Singing Championship in Hong Kong when you were just 19. How did things change for you after these wins?
Everything changed after that. Initially, I never had plans to be in the entertainment industry. Joining the competition was purely for fun. I was planning to further my studies, but after winning the competitions, I found myself in the entertainment industry. So in a way, it was quite a drastic change in direction for me. I needed some time to get used to the overnight change. Who are some of the artists, both local and international, that you’d like to work with in the future?
I’d definitely like to work with Ismail Izzani, Wang Leehom, and Adele! Who are your musical icons?
Adele, Justin Bieber and Michael Bublé. You are also into sports. Do you still make time for it, what with your busy schedule?
I used to play badminton for the Johor state team. I still do play regularly – 2-3 times a week. What are your plans for 2019? An album, perhaps?
Yes! My album will be released in the middle of 2019. There will also be a mini concert! Thereafter, I will be on tour in China and Taiwan.
Uriah See’s two singles – Now or Never and My Journey – are playing onboard this month. Find them under the Pop Asia genre in the Radio segment of your in-flight entertainment system.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur commissioned Royal Selangor to design the hotel’s new signature fan in pewter. Created in collaboration with Fusion Wayang Kulit studio, the fan puts the spotlight on the traditional northern Peninsular Malaysian-style wayang kulit (shadow puppet theatre), with motifs inspired by the hotel’s interior design elements.
Celebrating Sustainability As part of its Urban Hunting movement, Mercedes-Benz brought engaging brand experiences to Wonderfruit festival-goers in Pattaya, Thailand. The ‘Mercedes Me’ platform saw the creation of a signature menu, featuring dishes from famous eateries in Bangkok’s Thonglor neighbourhood as well as musical performances by prominent Thai and international artists.
Upscale Parties Aromatic Experience Atelier Cologne recently launched its first airport pop-up concept store at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport satellite terminal. Decorated with Parisian elements, the store is open for a limited time only, until the end of this month. It also offers custom engraving services on the leather case of its perfume bottles.

Clubbing is taken to new heights as the brand new hip-hop themed Empire by Zouk opens at Resorts World Genting, the first phase of the much larger Zouk Atrium. Empire by Zouk draws inspiration from the dual club-lounge theme that is reminiscent of upscale private lounges in New York.
