KL Zero-Waste Stores As more people attempt to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle, the zero waste movement – aimed at reducing, reusing and recycling as much as possible – is gaining traction. We look at five Malaysian zero-waste stores in the Klang Valley that are not only offering quality products but also doing their part to help save the environment.

City That Never Sleeps Whether you like history, culture, food or recreational activities, there’s something for everyone at the Big Apple. As one of the globe’s most cosmopolitan metropolises, New York City attracts millions of visitors from all over the world each year – more so during the summer months, with events and celebrations aplenty. We list some, plus new attractions, that you shouldn’t miss.
Underwater Dining Recently opened in the quaint village of Baly in Norway, Under is a unique restaurant that lets patrons dine with the fishes, literally. Made to resemble a sunken periscope, the monolithic structure is half-submerged in the sea, sporting a large glass wall with panoramic views of the marine life in the North Sea.

In our continuous effort to deliver Malaysian Hospitality in everything we do, we have expanded our partnership with KL Hilton’s award-winning restaurant, Iketeru, onboard our flights from Kuala Lumpur to Tokyo and Osaka. Throughout the summer, passengers get to enjoy specially designed Japanese dishes from Iketeru’s Executive Chef, Masami Okamoto. Guests can now enjoy seasonal delicacies that include Salmon Shioyaki, Unagi Tamagoyaki as well as Braised Beef Brisket with Ginger Rice.
goingplacesmagazine.com | 8 | July 2019
I am also pleased to announce that we have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Japan Airlines (JAL) to pursue a joint business agreement. This partnership aims to improve customer convenience on flights between Malaysia and Japan where customers on both airlines are able to book and travel seamlessly on either airline’s schedule and network. Japan Airlines has always had strong commercial links with us, the national carrier, and we are delighted to have taken this next important step with our close oneworld partner. This partnership will provide better efficiencies and a more comprehensive network for our customers whilst also playing a key role in further strengthening trade ties between Malaysia and Japan, increasing tourism and promoting Kuala Lumpur International Airport as an air hub. Subject to regulatory approvals, we hope to start the joint business with JAL in 2020 to coincide with the Tokyo Olympics.

EDITOR’S NOTE
There’s something educational about seeing the art of the country you’re visiting. You’ll learn about the history and the culture of the place, and you’ll end up feeling far more enriched than when you started.
goingplacesmagazine.com | 10 | July 2019
Murals, graffiti, vandalism – street art has been called various names. It began as a form of political expression in the 1970s. By the 2000s, it became more mainstream when artists attempted to bring art out of white-walled galleries. Nowadays, works by street art leaders such as Banksy and Basquiat are being exhibited in museums or sold for huge profits. In hipster locations such as Canggu in Bali, Indonesia, this form of creative expression has flourished in recent years. You’ll find works by Australian artist Fintan Magee, Russian Anna Bronza and locals such as Dnztwo and Slinat on buildings, neighbourhood walls, deserted alleyways and inside cafés. Our cover story has more on the artists who are using the genre to beautify public spaces as well as to convey important issues affecting the coastal enclave.
Julie Goh Editor
Oh look, it’s July! It’s been a busy half year for us at Going Places. One where we began by writing about travel resolutions and looking at trends that will shape the culinary world in 2019, and ending by making the case for why a holiday in Kyoto, Japan is worth spending your hard-earned money for. In between, we highlighted the Malaysian women who are making a difference in our society as part of International Women’s Day in March; explained the significance of fasting during the holy month of Ramadan in May, and the traditions behind Eid, which was celebrated a month later in June; and more. The next six months will be equally busy. We’re already curating stories for the end of the year, and nothing can give me a fuzzier feeling than planning a festive issue.
Also in this issue, rainforests are in focus, albeit on different platforms. One is the setting for the annual Rainforest World Music Festival, a three-day celebration of the diversity of world music, held at the foothills of Mount Santubong in Sarawak. The other is where the Tropical Rainforest Conservation & Research Centre, an NGO, does its work to perpetuate tropical tree species by gathering seeds for germination in nurseries established in what they call living collection centres. While vastly different, both play critical roles in the conservation and preservation of a living heritage, which must be supported. See you in August. ■

What is despairing, though, is drawing or painting. I cannot draw to save my life. I’ve always struggled in art classes, even the ones in primary school where we’re asked to paint a house in the middle of a paddy field, with the sun shining brightly above. The sun is about the only thing I can manage nicely. Well, some of us just can’t draw. But I do appreciate art. Whenever I travel, I try to fit in a visit to the art museum.

MOHD SOFIAN HILMI Shah Alam, Malaysia

I enjoy your in-flight magazine and service onboard. The beginning of the year has always been busy for me when I have to visit different production offices in different countries in Asia, as we produce Christmas illumination in this region. A couple of years ago, I decided to fly only with Malaysia Airlines. I love the Malaysian Hospitality. You cannot find this with any other airline. From Kuala Lumpur to Shanghai, from Shanghai to Jakarta, Jakarta to Bangkok, I have always had an amazing experience. All the small things make the difference; the pink guava juice, peanuts, satay and nasi lemak sambal udang are, for me, all typically Malaysia Airlines. The crew are always friendly and professional, especially Ms. Julie Kok (we are not family members!) on my flight from Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur on 4 March. I hope one day you will return to operating direct flights to and from Amsterdam because many of our citizens love the Malaysian Hospitality. RAYMOND KOK (the Dutch guy with a Chinese name) Den Haag, The Netherlands
I was on flight MH755 from Phnom Penh to Kuala Lumpur on 2 March when the passenger two seats in front of me dropped his meal. He started to pick up the mess when the stewardess came and told him, “Please, sir, don’t. I’ll come and clean it up once I’ve finished serving.” The man, however, continued what he was doing. The stewardess came to him once again and said, “Please, sir. Let me do it in a bit.” And soon she came by to clean up the mess, quietly and calmly without any fuss. Though it may well have been part of her job description, I thought it was most gracious of her. LUQMAN MICHEL Sabah, Malaysia
When I flipped through the March issue of Going Places introducing New Zealand, it reminded me of my recent trip to Auckland with my family. Travelling with children is not easy, what more on a long 10-hour night flight. The crew were attentive to our young ones, offering snacks before departure to fill their stomach and games and colouring books during the flight to keep them occupied. These gestures made our journey fun and comfortable. Kudos!

Lively Float Parade Aomori Nebuta Matsuri is the biggest summer festival of Japan’s northern Aomori prefecture, easily recognisable by its nightly parades of massive illuminated floats called nebuta. The bright, elaborate and dramatic nebuta often depict gods, legendary figures and historical figures from both Japanese and Chinese cultures. Each float is pushed by a team of people accompanied by musicians playing taiko drums, flutes and hand cymbals, as well as hundreds of lively dancers in haneto costumes. Outside participants can join in the dancing and procession too by buying or renting their own haneto costumes. The festival culminates on the final night with an impressive two-hour display of fireworks.
Dance Exchange The eighth edition of the Sibu International Dance Festival returns next month, bringing together nearly 30 dance acts from a wide variety of genres from at least a dozen countries worldwide. Organised by the Sibu-based Hornland Dance Theatre, the festival serves as a platform for artists to showcase the diversity of dance while exploring other dance genres and exchanging ideas. Featuring nightly dance concerts, the festival will also hold experimental theatre, outdoor performances, dance seminars and workshops, as well as a drawing competition that the public can participate in.

Glorious Cuisine Any well-travelled gastronome will tell you that one of the world’s best cuisines can be found in Spain’s Basque Country. But you don’t have to travel to San Sebastian for a taste – a short flight to Singapore’s Basque Kitchen by Aitor on Amoy Street will do just fine. Headed by Chef Aitor Jeronimo Orive (left), who has worked in some of the world’s best restaurants, such as Mugaritz, The Fat Duck, and Iggy’s, the restaurant serves up tasting menus that come in three-, five- or eight-course dinners that include classic Basque dishes like Marmitako, a traditional fish stew made with bonito crudo, potatoes, and peppers; black grouper served with sweet peas and piquillo espuma (a Basque red pepper puree); and Oxtail Bomba Rice (creamy short grain rice infused with 12-hour braised oxtail stew, served with a confit quail egg yolk and chive aioli). For fans of grilled food, opt for the five-course grill menu that includes Kokotxas, desalted Bacalao (cod fish) in pil-pil sauce made with black garlic; Txuleta, charcoal grilled Angus prime rib of old cows; and Mud Crab placed in sweet tomato water and katsuobushi. basquekitchenbyaitor.com

Located in a nondescript house in Kuala Lumpur’s Taman Seputeh neighbourhood is Puntry by Pun’s Ice Cream, a charming ice cream and comfort food restaurant created by Euwie and Beh E Laine. True to its charming name, casual vibe and cute logos, the diner specialises in house-made ice cream flavours including Hee Haw Haw (made from haw flakes, a sweet-sour childhood candy); Gimme Smore (inspired by S’mores), Berry Naise (berries), and Getting Caught In The Rain (an ode to the Pina Colada song). There’s more than desserts served though, as the Chiffle (fried chicken and waffles) alone is worth the drive, as is Peking On You, a version of duck rice served with homemade XO sauce, hoisin sauce and duck fat rice. The savoury food menu is usually served only on weekends, and offerings change from week to week, so be sure to check their Facebook page for regular updates.
London’s dining scene recently celebrated the opening of No 5 Social, the latest restaurant opened by Jason Atherton and The Social Company on Mayfair’s Pollen Street. The restaurant is headed by Executive Chef Kostas Papathanasiou, who was formerly the Senior Sous Chef at Atherton’s Michelin-starred Pollen Street Social and has worked in Ledbury and The Fat Duck. Here, you’ll find a menu that focuses on seasonal ingredients and British produce, with highlights including Isle of Wight tomato salad with goat’s curd, fennel and almonds; poached Hebridean halibut, roasted violet artichokes and sunflower; and Herdwick lamb chop and braised neck, crushed Jersey Royal potatoes, peas, mint and cucumber. End your meal on a sweet note with desserts like Richmond Park honey, oat crumble, milk ice cream and meringue; and a dark chocolate fondant with homemade blackcurrant sorbet. The menu changes seasonally, so check the website to find out what new dishes Chef Kostas has whipped up.

Chocolate lovers should check out the newly opened Harriston Chocolatier’s boutique in The Linc, Kuala Lumpur, which showcases the best of the Malaysian homegrown brand. The premium artisanal chocolates are made by experienced hands and includes pralines, chocolate bars and panned chocolates. The varieties aren’t what you’d find in most chocolate shops: among the unique flavours are the single-origin chocolate bars from Titiwangsa and Raub, as well as herb chocolate bars such as Chilli, Ginger, and Curry (made from a spice mix that has cumin, cardamom and coriander). The chocolate pralines include the Josephine praline (a dark chocolate praline that has a tinge of pineapple), durian and crunchy coconut. Harriston’s flagship stores can also be found in other places in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Pahang.
Bringing Italy’s most famous food export to the suburbs of Petaling Jaya is Pizza Mansion, a neighbourhood pizzeria that’s fast becoming the talk of the town. Located in the old Happy Mansion apartment blocks in Section 17, Pizza Mansion serves up wood-fire oven pizzas prepared with quality ingredients and generous toppings, priced affordably. The pizzas range from the humble but delicious vegetarian offerings Hey Margherita (house tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella, aged parmesan and fresh basil) and Zucchini Eggplant Chickpeas to the filling Big Brunch (beef bacon, button mushrooms, roasted cherry tomatoes, baby spinach and Fior Di Latte) and Carbonara (cheese sauce, mushrooms, parmigiano reggiano, egg, mozzarella, black pepper, and beef bacon). For those unafraid to go where Italians won’t, order the Pineapple Express (roasted pineapples, smoked duck, jalapeno, tomato sauce, and mozzarella) and have the side orders of ‘Baby’ Garlic Bread (made with confit garlic), and Classic Mac & Cheese, with grana padano, mozzarella, gouda and aged cheddar.

Circle Of Life City Life Photographer Azul Adnan was born and raised in Kuala Lumpur and has witnessed his home transform from a modest city into a buzzing metropolis. In his solo photographic show ‘KL Urbanisation’, now showing at Creative Space (MaTiC), Azul explores the plight of the individual living in Kuala Lumpur, an ever-expanding and rapidly changing city. Moments in the lives of everyday locals are candidly captured through his lens. Through the black-and-white images, viewers get a sense of the experiences of the city’s dwellers set against the landscape that both links and divides them. The impressive project has been a three-year-long labour of love for Azul, who scoured the city searching for the perfect compositions to capture. The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Toronto, Canada marks the 100th anniversary of its Tower Automotive building with a huge summer installation that will resonate with environmentalists and art enthusiasts alike. On 28 May, award-winning conceptual artist Mark Dion brought a whole deceased tree into the museum for a two-month installation that documents and explores the tree’s decomposition in the two months. The Life of a Dead Tree presents the circle of life and the process of decomposition; during this time, the museum will also host plenty of bugs, beetles and fungi, which all play a role in breaking down the tree’s form. The exhibition raises awareness about deforestation and the rapid decline of Earth’s natural resources. Alongside the show, MOCA also presents a series of talks, drawing workshops and learning walks about the stages of decomposition that a tree goes through and the lifeforms it supports during this time. The show comprises a range of artistic disciplines, including installations from Zulkifli Yusoff, Bibi Chew, Haslin Ismail, Haris Abadi and Jamil Zakaria, serving to explore the Malaysian heritage and common experience. “As always, BNM MAG is a platform for artists to promote their artistic works,” explains Noreen Zulkepli, Deputy Director of Bank Negara Museum. “As we put installation art at the forefront, we also hope it will inspire young and emerging artists to tell their stories, capturing memories with this non-conventional medium.”

In collaboration with Shiseido Travel Retail and Jewel, teamLab has transformed two spaces inside the airport with two multisensory installations – Resonating Forest and Resonating Trees – that explore the relationship between humans and the environment. Jewel Changi is one of the few airports boasting its own gardens, indoor waterfall and wooded area, but teamLab has added an extra dimension to the airport’s Shiseido Forest Valley and in Jewel’s Canopy Park. As visitors walk past the foliage in these two spaces, the trees respond to their presence with brightly coloured lights, which fade and change their colours to reflect the proximity of humans. Unearthing Britain’s

Modern British Muslim History
goingplacesmagazine.com | 28 | July 2019
To experience Britain’s modern Muslim history, take a short tube ride from the British Museum to Aldgate and start at the East London Mosque, where the British Muslim community’s first-ever professional archives centre opened recently. The East London Mosque Archives hold manuscripts and documents related to the community, including letters written by the English convert and celebrated Quran translator, Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall. Visitors can see the archives by appointment.
There’s only one place to start a tour of British antiquity, at London’s British Museum, home of the The Albukhary Foundation Gallery Of The Islamic World, where items from across the Muslim world are on display, including a 13th-century Persian astrolabe like the one invented by Muslim geographer Al Idrisi, and

the original zamzam (holy water from Mecca) flask of Victorian explorer Sir Richard Burton, a non-Muslim Brit who performed the Hajj. But the real gem is in Room 68. Offa’s Dinar – one of the museum’s best-kept secrets – is a gold coin minted in the 8th century by Anglo Saxon King Offa of Mercia with the Islamic declaration of faith (shahadah) inscribed on it, making it the oldest physical evidence of Islam and the earliest example
of Arabic writing in Britain. The shahadah is written around the words ‘Offa Rex’ and the back of the coin mentions Abbasid Caliph Al-Mansur and the Islamic date 157AH, just like the coins minted in Baghdad at the time. This, along with minor discrepancies in Arabic, suggest the coin was ‘copied’ from Islamic ones to be used for trading with Muslims, though the exact reason it was made is not known. One thing is certain: Offa’s Dinar proves
Around the corner from the mosque is Brick Lane, home to one of Britain’s pioneering Muslim communities, the British Bangladeshis, who migrated here from the 1960s onwards and opened many of Britain’s earliest Indian restaurants, helping to make curry Britain’s most popular food. To this day, Brick Lane remains one of the best places for South Asian Muslim food. The lane is also home to the Brick Lane Mosque, which has a wonderfully stylish, glowing minaret and sits in a building that used to be a church and a synagogue.
Centre Of British Muslim Heritage A short train ride southwest of London is the town of Woking in Surrey, which makes the biggest claim for being the centre of Britain’s Muslim heritage – it is home to no fewer than three of the country’s most important Islamic sites.

cemetery at Brookwood. The area remained forgotten until locals pushed for its renovation in 2011. Today, renamed the Peace Gardens, it has been turned into a serene space for contemplation and remembrance.
The most famous is the Shah Jahan Mosque, known as Britain’s ‘little Taj Mahal’. This piece of classic pseudo-Mogul architecture was built in 1889 by the oriental scholar Dr Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner and was the U.K.’s first purposebuilt mosque. The beautiful snow-white building with a large green dome, faux minarets and a water feature was part of an education complex called the Oriental Institute. Leitner also wanted to build a synagogue and Hindu temple on the site but died before this was realised. To fund the building of the mosque, Leitner reached out to the Begum of Bhophal in India, the Sultan Shah Jahan and the Prime Minister of Hyderabad, Sir Mir Turab Ali Khan (Salar Jung I). With the money he received, Leitner constructed the mosque and a building in the style of an Indian colonial villa called the Sir Salar Jung Memorial House. After Leitner’s death, the mosque and memorial house were acquired by an Indian lawyer named Khwaja Kamal-ud-Din. He, with the help of several influential converts, slowly made the mosque the centre of Islamic activity in Britain and Europe.
July 2019_MY Guide.indd 29
Several British lords, ladies and knights converted to Islam at the Shah Jahan, which was visited by famous Muslims, including King Faisal of Saudi Arabia and Abdul Karim, Queen Victoria’s Muslim servant. The mosque is also reportedly where the name ‘Pakistan’ was conceived, and it was ‘destroyed’ by aliens in H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds, set in Woking. Today, the mosque and memorial house are open to visitors. A 10-minute walk from the mosque is the site of the Woking Muslim War Cemetery, built in 1915 as a burial ground for British Muslim soldiers. The cemetery’s
design was also inspired by Mughal architecture and featured a beautiful domed chattri (pavilion) over the entrance and ornamental minarets on each corner of its redbrick perimeter wall. The site became the final resting place of 27 Muslim soldiers: 18 who died in World War I, one at Sandhurst barracks, and eight in World War II – three of these were actually soldiers of North African origin fighting for the Free French Forces. After the war years, the site was badly neglected and fell into disrepair. Eventually, the bodies were moved to the nearby military
The cemetery is the final resting place of many important British Muslims as well as several from abroad. These include Abdullah Quilliam, founder of Britain’s first mosque in Liverpool; Lord Headley, an influential early convert and peer; Muhammad Pickthall and Yusuf Ali, two of the most famous English translators of the Quran; and more recently, Dame Zaha Hadid, the celebrated British-Iraqi architect. The cemetery is also the final resting place of one of the last Ottoman princesses, the last King of Yemen’s Mutawakkilite Kingdom, and the famous Palestinian cartoonist Naji Salim al-Ali. ■
goingplacesmagazine.com | 29 | July 2019
Woking’s third and final British Muslim heritage site is also the oldest recorded piece of ‘Muslim land’ in Britain. The Muhammadan Cemetery, a plot inside Brookwood Cemetery, was set aside exclusively for Muslim burials by Dr Leitner in 1884 – a fact recorded on a small stone marker still on the plot called the Kibla Stone.

Useful Tips:
Woking Heritage Trails Grab free trail maps for the three Woking sites at the Shah Jahan mosque or Brookwood cemetery’s office (you can also download them from everydaymuslim.org). These contain maps, historical information and the background to each site, as well as a cemetery walk identifying many of the famous burials at the Muhammadan Cemetery.
London Muslim History Tours One of the best ways to get to know London’s hidden Muslim heritage is by joining the tours run by the Muslim History Tours company. Passionate tour guide and founder AbdulMaalik Tailor wanders through central London unveiling Islamic secrets few people know.
Britain’s First Mosque If you have time, head to the city of Liverpool and visit the country’s very first mosque opened in a house on Brougham Terrace by Abdullah Quilliam in 1889 (est. 1887). Today, it is known as the Abdullah Quilliam Mosque and is a functioning mosque and visitor space.

reality at The Void, to indulging at internationally recognised food-and-beverage outlets such as Harry Ramsden and Burger & Lobster. What can visitors expect at Zouk Genting?
A sensory overload of excitement! Expect a marvel for your eyes, ears and senses as the night unfolds with a non-stop display of creativity. I have partied professionally for 15 years, yet I have never felt goose bumps as I do in Zouk Genting. What are some of the similarities and differences between the three Zouks in terms of design and the facilities on offer?
Each Zouk has its own characteristics that allow them to stand out, but one thing they all share in common is their status of being cutting-edge in regards to both audio and visual capabilities. Zouk Genting has one of the most impressive lighting features in world clubbing, and the Void speakers are state-of-the-art. The LED screen is one of the biggest I have ever seen in my career and the overall clubbing experience is more reminiscent of a festival than a club room. Tell us more about the exciting concepts at Zouk Genting.
RedTail by Zouk is Malaysia’s best social gaming lounge, offering the very first giant games in the country. The giant beer pong sees 1,000 games a month and the outlet welcomed 10,000 visitors to enjoy a whole host of unique experiences. RedTail karaoke offers a fun twist to Asia’s favourite pastime, with six uniquely designed rooms for groups of all sizes to sing the night away. There is also Empire, a New York hip-hop inspired club lounge that offers hip-hop culture and music. We are looking forward to welcoming some of the genre’s biggest acts to perform within its four walls. Last but not least is FuHu, Malaysia’s first vibe dining restaurant, which offers an exciting twist to classical Chinese cuisine in an ambiance where you can enjoy a few flair cocktails or a lively dinner with your friends pre-Zouk. Are these a part of Zouk’s plans to move away from clubbing and into more lifestyle offerings? Tell us more about yourself and how you came to be with Zouk.
I have worked in the hospitality industry for 15 years, running high-end nightclubs in London welcoming celebrities like Drake, Rihanna and Usher. I have also arranged large-scale events globally within Formula One and for famous faces like Madonna. When the opportunity arose to work for Zouk, one of the world’s best known superclubs, it was a fantastic chance for me to grow the brand into new fields. Over the last two years, I have project-managed the curation, design, build and roll-out of five outlets for the brand, spread over 40,000 square feet (3,716
July 2019_InProfile Zouk.indd 30
square metres), allowing us to welcome up to 20,000 visitors a month to the Zouk Atrium in Resorts World Genting (RWG). Why did you choose to open in RWG?
RWG is by far the most exciting location in Malaysia. Aside from being home to some of the world’s most famous brands, the resort has repeatedly proven itself to be a hive of non-stop activity, with some of the most interactive and exciting activations in Southeast Asia, in addition to showcasing world-class acts such as John Legend and R3hab. There is literally so much to do at the resort, from experiencing hyper-
The brand is making moves to expand across lifestyle into a variety of outlets that allow any Zouk guest or member to enjoy a blend of activities and experiences depending on their preference – whether it’s casual drinks, lively social gaming, vibe dining or indeed hardcore clubbing. Bearing in mind, there are now three internationally recognised and award-winning nightclubs in the group. How would you say the brand has evolved over the years?
The brand has grown from one standalone club in Singapore to a lifestyle brand, with bars,

restaurants and festivals added to the clubbing foundation. Zouk now has multiple club rooms with their own identity and style, while RedTail games bar has opened in two countries and is set for the cruise ships. FuHu is the very first vibe dining restaurant in the portfolio, and of course, ZoukOut has been Asia’s leading music festival for nearly two decades. What would you say has contributed to Zouk’s success?
Zouk has always been more than just a club. It is an institution where memories are created, bonds are formed, music legends are danced to and friendships are toasted. Twenty-eight years of experience has built a team with quite possibly the very best hospitality understanding in the world. People come to see people, and Zouk regulars, as well as the international DJs, have been sharing their lives with the management and team at Zouk for three decades. You cannot replicate this kind of dynamic. What are some of the unique challenges for Zouk in the Malaysian market?
The immediate question that has been repeatedly asked of me is whether it is a hindrance to be based in RWG, 45 minutes outside of Kuala Lumpur. The answer is a prophetic no! We have seen a huge demand, and inherent satisfaction, from visitors who have made an entire weekend out of visiting the resort, as they enjoy an action-packed weekend of cutting-edge activities. Guests don’t just come up for Zouk, they arrive and enjoy lunch at Malaysian Food Street, battle Darth Vader in

the hyper-reality experience The Void, play Giant Pong in RedTail, dance to the world’s best DJs in Zouk, then walk back to their hotel before enjoying a casual day’s shopping in Genting Highlands Premium Outlet the next day. Don’t look at Zouk as a Saturday night experience. Look at it as part of a whole weekend of fun! What can we expect from Zouk Genting in terms of international acts or events in the coming months?
Zouk has already played host and has plans to welcome a squad of industry legends and household names, including Ferry Corsten, Markus Schulz, Sander Van Doorn, R3hab and Paul Van Dyk to name but a few. The line-up for the future will not just focus on electronic dance music acts, but will also include hip-hop, R&B as well as other live performers over the
coming months. There are definite plans for a fully interactive music event in Genting under the Zouk Live banner, and this will showcase a variety of lifestyle activities all rolled into one. What about plans in the pipeline for Zouk itself?
Following a decade of being voted as the best nightclub in Asia by industry bible DJ Mag and due to popular demand, Zouk as a brand is expanding internationally, both within Asia and further afield. Zouk will have a presence on the Genting cruise ships, and we will play a major role in terms of entertainment in Resorts World Las Vegas when it launches in the near future. Very few club brands can match the innovation, progression and expansion of Zouk, and it all means that there are very exciting times ahead. ■

EXPLORE | Canggu Street Art
Urban Art The coastal enclave of Canggu in Bali is the island’s hot spot for creative expression. Words Anita Surewicz | Photography Putu Sayoga
goingplacesmagazine.com | 34 | July 2019
Art permeates virtually every part of Balinese culture. From intricate carvings to dance, creativity stands at the core of the Indonesian island. Coupled with natural beauty, Bali is a rich source of inspiration for selfexpression. The emergence of a vibrant street art scene in the tourist enclave of Canggu is a case in point.
ALLCAPS, a gallery and art supply store, has been instrumental in the growth of Canggu’s street art scene by bringing together local and international artists for regular spray jams. The community space is run by Swiss-born street art enthusiast Julien Thorax, who has been working to raise awareness of the art form since settling on the island in 2015.
Once a sleepy coastal town, Canggu has been attracting both Indonesian and foreign visitors eager to soak up the Bohemian vibe and leave their artistic mark. It is not surprising that the neighbourhood’s walls, fences, and columns are gradually being taken over by eye-popping murals.
“Bali’s street art scene is growing from strength to strength. There are a lot of young Indonesian artists just starting out and a large number of foreign street artists who come here to forge connections with local artists,” says Thorax. “This mix of nationalities and cultures has been encouraging local artists to go beyond just

tagging. These days, some Indonesian street artists are even commissioned to do murals at local bars and cafés.” Standing in stark juxtaposition to the surrounding rice fields and beaches, the bold and alluring images combine modern and traditional motifs. Many local street artists choose to remain close to their roots, blending traditional cultural icons with a contemporary ethos. One of the Balinese artists is Dnztwo, who started painting murals in 2005 after a friend inspired him to pick up a spray paint can and try his hand at the modern-day craft. “My style is contemporary. I love combining realistic portraits with patterns. Sometimes I use

6 traditional Balinese motifs in my pieces as a symbol of my heritage,” Dnztwo says. “My art talks about maintaining cultural values in the modern era when there are so many influences around that it is becoming difficult to keep up with them without changing the values of the Balinese culture.” Many murals around Canggu aim to raise awareness about important issues affecting the holiday island, such as rampant development and environmental pollution. Quint is a Sumatra-born Indonesian artist who combines graffiti with stencil art. While he is quick to admit that he tries to stay away from politics or issues associated with tourism, his murals in Canggu certainly send a strong message. His pieces usually feature monochromatic maidens in determined poses. “I did my first stencil piece in Canggu in 2011, at a time when there were still more rice fields in the area than buildings,” Quint says. “My art is inspired by natural beauty and love. A lot of my murals are of women because to me, they represent beauty and love. I also sometimes paint animals as a representation of the uniqueness of Bali’s nature.” Canggu’s walls have recently also become a playground for international street artists. According to Thorax, around 75 percent of the

murals have been created by foreign artists. One of these painters is Jay Fanakapan, a London-based artist who started out in the 2000s. His signature pieces experiment with optical illusions, and he is best-known for his 3D hyper-realistic chrome balloons. “I painted a few throwies in Bali but also did two decent pieces in Canggu. One by the beach highlighting the plight of Bali’s dolphins, which unfortunately are still used to entertain people on the island. The other and more popular piece is my High 5. I painted it in silver chrome, so it reflects the surrounding rice paddies.”
1
One of the few female street artists who has left her footprint in Canggu, Anna Bronza says she enjoys collaborating with local artists. Originally from Saint Petersburg in Russia, Bronza has spent the past few years in Bali working on murals with both foreign and Indonesian artists. While her background is in interior design and architecture, her street art career began when she painted huge Hawaiian flowers on the wall of her apartment. “I love splashes of bright colour – mainly cartoon style – as well as monochrome graphics. My manifesto in life and art is ‘only love,’ which means that I am against violence, aggression, bullying or negativity,” she says. “Bali influences my art, both in good and bad ways. While I am inspired by the island’s natural beauty, plastic pollution on the island has pushed me to criticise it in my art.” There is little doubt that the aesthetics and symbolism of Canggu’s street art are gradually transforming its creative landscape. Once only found on the walls of abandoned buildings and down deserted alleyways, the visual art form

is making its way into trendy cafés and major cultural hubs. This accessibility is precisely what first drew Thorax to aerosol imagery. “Street art brings art to the people,” he says. “While most artists in Bali still paint what they think is beautiful, more and more are using their art to share a message. Both local and international artists are concerned about important issues, reflecting this in their work. Whether they inspire or confront, these vibrant images can have a huge impact.” ■

EXPLORE | Rainforest World Music Festival
Celebrating World Music Pulsating to a world beat, the Rainforest World Music Festival in Sarawak attracts tens of thousands of visitors a year. Words + Photography David Bowden
goingplacesmagazine.com | 38 | July 2019
It is a warm and humid night in the rainforests of Sarawak, and I am surrounded by thousands of sweaty bodies. The crowd is moving to a musical beat that constantly changes over the course of the festivities. The evening started with a trio of Mongolian throat singers whose melodious but guttural sounds resembled the wind and birds of the Gobi Desert and ended with a madcap trio of Scotsmen, one of whom was suspended from the shoulders of a fellow musician upside down while playing the accordion. Welcome to the Rainforest World Music Festival staged on the spacious grounds of the Sarawak Cultural Village in coastal rainforests just beyond Damai Beach.
The festival was designed to entertain audiences with its varied repertoire of musical genres. While not all artists win over the entire crowd, the festival’s artistic direction has stuck to its principles and is prepared to take the occasional musical risk. While the music is the main reason for attending, it usually does not matter who is performing, as the musicians are all superb and often the best in their genre.
Sounds Of The Forest This year, the forests will again resonate with the infectious beat of over 20 bands and artists on
2 1
I have been to several of these festivals and they have all been memorable with an eclectic range of musicians who perform to enthusiastic crowds in an atmospheric setting. The festival began in 1998 and is regularly voted one of the top 25 festivals of its kind by respected world music magazine, Songlines. Ticket sales are capped to ensure festivalgoer comfort as the site can only accommodate so many. The audience sprawls over the sevenhectare site with many happy to laze around the lake that dominates the cultural village while watching the performances on strategically located big screens.
The festival takes place from 12-14 July and is staged at the base of the 800-metre high Mount Santubong, 30 kilometres from Sarawak's capital of Kuching

Two jungle-backed stages – the larger Jungle Stage and the smaller Tree Stage – enable the music to continue without a break. The music starts at 7.30 pm and continues to just after midnight. An Iban Miring Ceremony is usually performed on the first evening to honour the spirits, gods and ancestors and to bring success to the festival. Saturday night attracts the biggest crowd, but the liveliest performers usually appear on Sunday evening to ensure a climactic conclusion before all performers return to the stage for a grand group finale.

Ancestral DNA
Jam Sessions & Ethno Bazaar
A question that constantly arises at festivals like this is, just what is world music? One musician describes it as “ancestral music – it’s in your DNA” while another labels world music as “storytelling – the struggle of the people – it is political and engaging.” Indeed, there are no geographical boundaries to world music as it is a style without borders.
The festival is a Sarawak Tourism initiative to promote the state as a destination beyond adventure while providing a venue for locals and visitors to enjoy themselves in a magical rainforest setting. It provides the opportunity for the rhythm and beat of local music to combine harmoniously with global musical styles.
The festival also supports the continuation of the music and culture of the numerous ethnic communities in Sarawak. Artists from Sarawak perform each evening and usually a sape (Sarawakian lute-like instrument) features on the programme.
Each afternoon, musicians jam together and with members of the enthusiastic audience, who are encouraged to join in. Musicians exchange licks while many members of the audience join in the dancing, clapping and singing. Others perform in the intimate air-conditioned Rainforest Theatre.
The festival has seen the revitalisation of sapeplaying and keeps the instrument alive and valued rather than having it doomed to a cultural museum.
These workshops are popular with families and children who enjoy the opportunity to learn more about the instruments or musical styles. The Iban longhouse is one of the venues for

n Location Sarawak Cultural Village is located 30 kilometres from Kuching, Sarawak’s capital city. Festival shuttle buses operate to and from the site. n Weather Sarawak has a tropical climate, so it is mostly hot and humid but comfortably cooler in the evening. The festival is staged in a rainforest, which could mean rain, so come prepared with a poncho, umbrella and sandals. n Tickets Pre-paid tickets (check the website) offer better value than those purchased during the festival. n Accommodation Damai Beach Resort is within walking distance of the site but is usually booked out for the festival. Most festivalgoers travel out from Kuching each day.

Making It
Look Easy It’s plain to see why Garima Arora has been showered with accolades for her first restaurant Gaa. Words Vincent Vichit-Vadakan | Photography courtesy of Gaa
Arora found herself in a country with which she discovered a surprisingly deep affinity. “In India, we have a very superficial view of what Thailand is” – a view that she shared at the time. But she observes, “There is a strong connection between Thailand and India culturally. The people, the history, are very similar. There are so many words that are similar to Hindi.”
With that connection, the idea to stay in Bangkok seemed like a perfectly natural choice to her. “I think Thailand makes a good backdrop to work with Indian cuisine,” she says. She fell in love with local ingredients, from egg fruit to greens foraged in the jungle. “I think my pivotal point was meeting Num,” she said, using the nickname of Chef Weerawat Triyasenawat of Samuay and Sons in Udon Thani in northeastern Thailand, known for his creative use of foraged ingredients. “Seeing all these ingredients made me change my whole idea about whether I could live here and work here.” She concedes that would be the case no matter where she was cooking. “If I were in another part of the world, I would do just that, work with what's around me.”
goingplacesmagazine.com | 43 | July 2019
Chef Garima Arora didn't come to Bangkok to open a restaurant. She studied at the Cordon Bleu in Paris and held several jobs, including a career-defining two-year stint at Noma in Copenhagen, where Arora was hand-picked by culinary powerhouse Gaggan Anand to head his flagship Indian restaurant in India. The Mumbai native joined Gaggan's eponymous restaurant in Bangkok to prepare for the new project, but the plan fizzled before it ever got off the ground.
She moved into a couple of shophouses opposite Gaggan's restaurant and had free rein to design her restaurant from the

ground up. Among other techniques, she embraced fermentation, one of the signatures of Noma, as a key to her unique flavour profiles, something she emphasised when Gaa opened its doors two years ago. “We still do. It's a big part of who we are.” Arora's own personality really shines through when she reimagines her Indian heritage. “Indian cuisine can be much more than comfort food. It has the resources to give chefs the means to make something completely new, different and modern.” She doesn't serve rich gravies and stacks of bread, but rather uses her memories of food from home as a starting point. She points to the braised jackfruit with pickles, the crayfish head, and her take on a beef taco as examples of dishes that owe a debt to her Indian

roots yet are decidedly her own. She also singles out the betel leaf, an ingredient used both in Thai and Indian cuisine, that she uses at the start and end of the meal in original ways. “They're like bookends. You start your meal with the savoury betel leaf like you would in Thailand and you finish it sweet like in India. That's the connection and I think it tells that story beautifully. They are not traditional recipes by any stretch of the imagination, but the reference points are in the cultures.” They are also visually stunning and are among the most photographed of her dishes. Recognition of her intensely personal work didn't take long. After just a year and a half, she won a Michelin star, an historic first for a woman from India. “I went from being a line chef to having my
own restaurant,” she says, looking across the lane in the direction of Gaggan's kitchen. Soon after she picked up the star, she received a call from the organisers of Asia's 50 Best Restaurants saying she had been selected as 2019's Best Female Chef in Asia. Would she accept the honour? “I thought about accepting or not,” she says candidly. “I have strong feelings about many issues. I am absolutely against positive discrimination.” She bristles slightly when asked if she sees herself as a role model. In the end, she decided to accept because the exposure gave her a new platform to talk about Indian food in a modern context. In addition to the Best Female Chef award, she also entered the 50 Best list at number 16, the highest new entry this year. Despite the attention, she is determined to stay focused. She has no plans to expand. “It's one day at a time,” she states. She also doesn't want to lose sight of her continued research in the kitchen. Her eyes light up when she takes the example of the humble besan or chickpea flour. “As a starch, there is so much potential. We fry it, we steam it, we poach it. It can be

reinterpreted in a modern way.” It's a challenge she relishes. But she is against changing just for the sake of change. “For me, menu changes only make sense when you have something worthwhile to say.” She hastens to point out that it hasn't been all smooth sailing. She has had to learn about managing expectations of partners, staff and customers. She has had to “deal with figures,” she says, rolling her eyes. But the added responsibility has given her focus and grounding. Arora, who also found time to get married while starting a new business, notes with a laugh that “my husband says I'm much more patient since opening the restaurant.” It's safe to bet that a besan-based dish will make its way to the menu when she's ready. “Am I working on it? Yes! Have I got anywhere? No!” But there is no doubt in her voice that she will find a solution. “How else do you push yourself if you don't look for something new and something different?” ■

Building living collections to conserve endangered species of rainforest trees. Words Carolyn Hong | Photography courtesy of Tropical Rainforest Conservation and Research Centre
goingplacesmagazine.com | 46 | July 2019
How do you plant a rainforest? Like any other garden. Begin with a nursery to nurture baby trees, then send them out into the wild when they are ready. But of course, it isn’t that simple. Seeds of wild trees don’t come in neat packets from the store, and trees grow very tall. Dainty spindly saplings can shoot up to two metres in just two years. The Tropical Rainforest Conservation and Research Centre (TRCRC) has been fine-tuning this craft since 2012, when it was set up as a non-governmental organisation to work on ideas 2 for conserving rainforests in Malaysia. Planting rainforests is part of its efforts to save endangered wild tree species, some of which are sliding towards extinction.
Growing very slowly, they begin flowering only after the 20th year, and then only once every five to seven years. They live up to 600-700 years and can reach around 90 metres tall. The world’s tallest tropical tree found in Sabah measures at 100 metres. They are truly the giants of the rainforest. “The biggest threats to them are fragmentation of the forests and over-exploitation,” said Dr Dzaeman. A number of these iconic trees are
1 2
“Our focus is conservation,” said its Executive Director Dr Dzaeman Dzulkifli. To do this, it has established Tropical Rainforest Living Collections to preserve rare and precious trees from Malaysia’s rainforests. Two Living Collections have been built in Perak and Sabah, and it is now exploring similar ones in four other states. Over 100 million years old, Malaysia’s rainforests are some of the world’s oldest and most diverse places. In just one hectare, there can be as many as 400 tree species and up to 3,000 individual trees. And that’s not counting the smaller plants and shrubs. But the jungles are also under threat from deforestation for commercial and other purposes, particularly the iconic Dipterocarp species or tropical hardwoods. The Meranti, Serayan and Cengal are some, to use their common Malaysian names. These trees have high commercial value but an even greater value for their role in generating an ecosystem for smaller flora and fauna.

already on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature as being threatened or endangered. The Tropical Living Collections aim to bring these species into protective care, to keep them alive and thriving, and to eventually repopulate the wild in forest reserves and degraded jungles. They are kept in lush nurseries as living plants, near the reserves where the parent trees are found. One might wonder if it would be easier to store seeds rather than trees, but tropical trees don’t lend themselves well to being conserved in the form of seeds. “The majority of our species don’t go into a dormant period, so we need to save them as living collections,” said Dr Dzaeman. The first step in building a Living Collection is to identify the species, based on the IUCN Red List and local lists. The TRCRC’s ground team, or G-Team as they are called, goes out into the forests to select suitable trees for seed collection and mark them. Their exact location is recorded. Then the team waits and watches.

It can be a long wait of up to seven years for the trees to flower. When they do, they tend to do so all at once. When the mass flowering takes place, the entire team along with Dr Dzaeman swing into action to collect seeds from the selected trees. Collecting seeds isn’t as easy as picking them off the ground. It’s quite an operation, requiring a lot of creativity and energy. The trees are shaken with ropes tied to the branches towering high above, to get the distinctively shaped flowers to drift to the ground for collection. The seeds are germinated in a nursery, in a precise formation. Not more than 30 seeds from one parent tree are planted to ensure that diversity is maintained, and the sibling saplings are kept together. This ensures that the team knows exactly where these saplings came from.

As the baby plants begin shooting up, some are moved to shaded areas to slow their growth, while some are left in the sun to give them a full taste of life in the wild as they are prepared to be replanted in the forest. The trees are replanted where they came from, with not too many sibling trees, to mimic natural conditions. If seed collection is hard work, replanting is even more so. Each sapling must be carried carefully through the forest to the spot chosen for it. Imagine walking four to five kilometres in a rainforest with a tree strapped to your back! After planting, the sapling, which had been ‘hardened’ in the nursery, is left alone to grow. It will face plenty of challenges out there – a sudden turn of the weather, for wet or dry, may threaten its survival. Its carers come back regularly to clear the vines that may strangle it, doing that for no less than two years, but there’s little they can do about the weather. So far, TRCRC has collected 56,000 seeds from 72 species, 43 of which are on the Red List. Over 50,000 seedlings are being nurtured in the nurseries, and about 7,000 have been planted, including saplings grown by state forestry departments. Its focus is on building the collection, particularly for species like the Keruing Jarang in Sabah, where only 10 individual trees remain in the wild.
July 2019_Explore Saving Rainforests02.indd 48
Saving the giants of the rainforests is undoubtedly a long and arduous job, with no guarantees. But Dr Dzaeman’s passion tells him that it can be done. So, how do you plant a rainforest? With plenty of passion, loads of hard work, and a lot of hope. ■

When visiting the coastal town of Sitiawan in Perak, a must-buy is mee suah. Literally meaning “thread noodles due to its long thin shape, the noodle is highly prized for its ability to absorb the flavours of the ingredients it is cooked with. Originally from China, mee suah was introduced to Malaysia when a boatload of people from Fuzhou, one of Fujian’s biggest cities, migrated to Sitiawan in 1903. They went on to start a mee suah cottage industry; today, the noodles are easily available at markets and sundry shops around Sitiawan. Still, no local worth his salt would dream of eating factorymade ones when freshly hand-pulled mee suah is available. Second-generation Fuzhou descendant Ling Choong is one of the few artisans who know

dingin sementara menanti jelmaan sang matahari.

how to make mee suah by hand. He learned the skill from his father and is now passing the skill to his eldest son, Siong Yeong. Operating out of a nondescript house that doubles as a shop, Ling says, “In the past, it was a common sight for racks of mee suah to be hanging under the sun to dry in the backyard of houses, particularly in Kampung Cina. Sadly, the skill is slowly disappearing because the young are not interested to pick it up.” We follow him out to the backyard, where tall wooden racks are standing. “Drying the noodles in the sun is important to keep the noodles longer as we don’t use preservatives,” he explains. “The sun must be hot enough. Whether there’s any work for the day depends on the whims of weather.” From the house, Ling brings out several bamboo sticks that are wrapped with dough strips. This is the noodle dough, which has been prepared earlier by mixing wheat flour and water. The dough has been left to proof for several hours before being flattened with a rolling pin, cut into long strips and shaped into coils. After that, the dough strips are woven around bamboo sticks, then stored in a cool airy area to dry, while waiting for the sun to come out. Now, Ling inserts each noodlewrapped bamboo stick into holes that have been drilled on the wooden racks. What happens next is a mesmerising show of hand control and noodle wizardry. Ling pulls one stick out of each pair of noodles and shakes them, now and then using thin bamboo sticks

Mee suah mula diperkenalkan di Sitiawan, Perak semasa penghijrahan masyarakat Cina dari Fuzhou, antara bandar terbesar di wilayah Fujian, China pada tahun 1903. Originally from China, mee suah was introduced to Malaysia when a boatload of people from Fuzhou, one of Fujian’s biggest cities, migrated to Sitiawan in 1903.
After two hours, the noodles are removed and covered with a towel to prevent further drying. Ling cuts the noodles and separates the middle part from the head and tail sections, before coiling and packing them for customers. “The thicker head and tail sections are used in fried noodles, while the middle or finer parts are used for soup,” he says. The most popular way to eat them is in a soup flavoured with red rice wine, chicken, sesame oil and ginger. This Fuzhou delicacy is sold at many Chinese eateries in Sitiawan, the most famous being Bei King Restaurant.

to slowly pull and stretch the strands further and longer – sometimes up to 10 times their original length. Amazingly, the super-thin noodles don’t snap despite the constant pulling. Ling continuously feels the noodles to see which parts are thick and need to be stretched further. When he is satisfied, he leaves the noodles to dry in the sun.
But there are simpler ways to enjoy mee suah at home. Following Ling’s instructions, I dip the noodles for 10 seconds in boiling water – any longer and the noodles become gummy and clumpy – and toss them in shallot oil. “Don’t add salt because it has been added into the noodle dough earlier,” he warned me. “This saltiness differentiates handmade mee suah from commercial ones.” Taking a bite, I am surprised by the full-bodied taste despite the simple condiments. The noodles have varying degrees of softness and chew, and a distinct umami lent by the salt in the dough, as Ling said. The ancient Chinese poet Huang Shan Gu was said to have been so enthralled after tasting mee suah in Fujian that he composed these verses: “Silvery threads tangling in the bowl are the soup cakes, a wisp of threads drawn suggesting a jade twig thwart”. ■

65 News & Updates
Working Together Malaysia Airlines and Japan Airlines have signed a memorandum of understanding to pursue a joint business agreement to improve customer convenience by enhancing the quality of services provided by both carriers on flights between Malaysia and Japan. The two airlines began offering codeshare flight operations between Japan and Malaysia in 2012, when Malaysia Airlines joined the oneworld alliance. The joint business agreement will mark a new chapter by enabling the airlines to cooperate in a wider scope such as exchanging best practices, exploring collaboration in other operational areas, including cargo, and jointly developing tourism in both the Japanese and Malaysian markets. Subject to the relevant approvals, Malaysia Airlines and Japan Airlines intend to start the joint business in 2020 to coincide with the Tokyo Olympics.

Not Forgotten In the spirit of Ramadan, Malaysia Aviation Group recently distributed packed meals through its Singgah Sahur programme to strengthen the bond and camaraderie with employees and vendors working on shifts at critical operational areas. Over 1,000 packed meals were distributed by the management team during the two Singgah Sahur sessions, held on 20 and 22 May between 12.00 am and 3.00 am. Singgah Sahur is the group’s annual Ramadan get-together in appreciation of employees who are unable to have sahur (the morning meal before fasting) with their families due to the nature of their work.

Allergy Notice Malaysia Airlines has announced a list of pre-boarding requirements for passengers with peanut and tree nut allergies to ensure their safety onboard. Passengers are required to notify the airline of the allergy at the time of booking, and check-in must be performed at the check-in desk in the airport. Passengers will need to bring two printed copies of the completed Peanut/Nut Allergy Release Forms and doctor’s action plan for allergic reactions or anaphylaxis, for check-in. Passengers should also ensure that they carry their own medication, such as an EpiPen in their hand luggage, and inform their travel companions how to administer treatment if required. Passengers may bring their own food items that do not require chilling or reheating onboard if they need to be certain of an allergen-free meal. They may also bring sanitising wipes for arm rests, meal trays and seat back areas. Should passengers feel the symptoms of an allergic reaction, they should alert a Malaysia Airlines staff member on ground or on board immediately. For the complete list of requirements, please visit malaysiaairlines.com/my/en/plan-your-trip/ special-assistance.html.

SAFETY + SERVICE INFO
CABIN LUGGAGE HANDLING Passenger and crew safety onboard our flights is our highest priority. In compliance with the airline’s policy and in observing Occupational, Safety and Health Regulations requirements, cabin crew are no longer required to stow passengers’ hand luggages into the overhead stowage compartment. This is to minimise occupational hazard and ergonomic risks faced by cabin crew in the aircraft. Cabin crew on duty will, however, assist passengers travelling with infants, young passengers travelling alone, the elderly, and passengers with reduced mobility. Passengers who are fit and in good health must carry, stow and secure their own hand luggages on board. Hand luggage exceeding the 7kg weight limit is required to be checked in before boarding.
PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PED) For safety reasons and in line with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia guidelines, mobile phones and all PEDs must be switched off once the aircraft has moved out of bay/gate for departure. Whilst cruising, devices placed in flight mode may be used. The devices must again be switched off during the approach for landing until the aircraft is parked at the terminal building. Devices transmitting strong signals must remain switched off throughout the flight, until disembarkation. The Captain may prohibit the use of devices that can interfere with the aircraft’s system.
LITHIUM BATTERIES Lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries for portable electronic devices (PEDs), including medical devices must not exceed 2g for lithium metal batteries and 100Wh for lithium ion batteries. All spare batteries, including lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries, for PEDs must be carried in passengers’ carry-on baggage only. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. For PEDs containing non-spillable batteries, they must be 12V or less or 100Wh or less. A maximum of two spare batteries may be carried. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.
NO-SMOKING POLICY Smoking, including the use of electronic cigarettes, is prohibited on all flights.
ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES Electronic cigarettes must be carried on one’s person or in carry-on baggage only. Recharging of the device inflight is not permitted.
COMFORT & CARE Personal care, baby paraphernalia and first aid treatment are available upon request.
ZERO TOLERANCE OF ABUSE We value courteousness. Any form of threat, verbal abuse or violence towards our staff will be taken seriously. We are committed to supporting anyone who has been the victim of an assault.

FILM REVIEWS
WANT HELP WITH WHAT TO WATCH THIS MONTH? FILMMAKER AND DIRECTOR KAM RASLAN MAKES THE CASE FOR THESE MOVIES. Even after 20 years, The Matrix remains a knockout visual and philosophical feast that has a lasting impact on sci-fi movies and has given Hong Kong stuntmen more work than they can handle. It makes me want to ask Siri to confirm that the Matrix doesn’t actually exist, but I’m scared that its answer will be, “I’m afraid I can’t do that.”
Trapp family, there is still one life-or-death mountain to climb. If you haven’t watched The Sound Of Music before, then it could become one of your favourite things.
THE MATRIX (1999)
goingplacesmagazine.com | 80 | July 2019
Time is the curse for science fiction movies. What looked clever when the movie came out can look clunky and silly when time rolls by. Only a few science fiction movies have had a lasting grip on the imagination with their evocation of the future. We don’t have a space station on the moon but 1968’s 2001: A Space Odyssey remains awe-inspiring, as is 1982’s Blade Runner, even though it is set in 2019 and we still don’t have flying cars despite the best efforts of the Malaysian car industry. Only a very few sci-fi movies get the future right, and on its 20th anniversary, The Matrix is one, because today, in a sense, we all live inside the Matrix. We exist in the real world of people, jobs and buildings, but we also live in a cyber world where our lives are better and where lies can be truth. Who is to say which world is more real anymore? When The Matrix came out in 1999, the Internet was in its dial-up infancy (buffering… buffering…), but the movie’s directors, the Wachowski brothers (who have since become sisters), understood the future duality of our lives. They created a world where our real physical world is an illusion constructed by machines and where we humans actually exist in a far darker realm. Only an extremely stylish and small resistance movement stands in the way of the machines and their computerworld villainous agents. And most importantly, they all seek the Chosen One: Keanu Reeves in his standout role as Neo. Since The Matrix, every sci-fi movie has its Chosen One: an ordinary person who doesn’t realise that he/she is the preordained leader and saviour. The Internet and social media have given us this need and hope by simultaneously feeding us with the sense that we must be special and reminding us that we are helpless.

MISS BAEK (SOUTH KOREA 2018)
THE SOUND OF MUSIC (1965) Most of this movie’s ever-growing legion of fans, like Lady Gaga, Gwen Stefani and Ariana Grande, were born long after its release in 1965. What is the secret to its enduring popularity? Co-star Christopher Plummer did not like the movie at all, calling it “sentimental and gooey”, which is exactly why The Sound Of Music (and the best desserts) has remained so successful. The key is the open-hearted, almost childlike naivety of Maria (Julie Andrews), whose unstoppable goodness is so radioactive that it melts anyone who crosses her path. And all the songs are fantastic. All musicals begin with the “I want” song, where the (usually) female lead tells us exactly what she wants in life, and then after a rocky road, she gets it. The Sound Of Music begins with the iconic scene of Maria ascending a mountain and singing in the midst of alpine beauty that she wants freedom, the music of nature and love. In reality, Julie Andrews was being blown over by the helicopter downdraft and the director was up a tree shouting instructions, but reality doesn’t matter, and if after that stunning intro, you have a problem with Maria, then the problem is you. What sets The Sound Of Music apart from all the rest is that it shows us what happens after the “happily every after” of romance and marriage. Even after the nanny Maria has brought love to the previously loveless Von
It was on Malaysia Airlines flights that I fell in love with South Korean films. Given a chance to sample movies from around the world, I was quickly overwhelmed by Korean films with their remarkable characters, great acting, storylines that rarely end where you expect (very often unhappily), and above all, their virtuoso film-making craft. After watching Korean films, I feel disappointed by Hollywood because they are set in rooms where no real lives are lived, the spaces are too clean and perfect, while in Korean films, they are filled with the clutter of lives being imperfectly led. Miss Baek, like the best Korean movies, is a far cry from the cutesy glitz of K-pop and TV soap operas. Miss Baek, which easily outperformed A Star Is Born in South Korean cinemas, is a gritty realist drama about women perpetuating and fighting to break cycles of violence. Too many Korean films only have female characters as victims, but Miss Baek is all about women doing good and bad, with exconvict Miss Baek (Han Ji-min) finding herself drawn to helping a clearly abused little girl. If you have never watched Korean films, please give them a try. You might find yourself dazzled by unfamiliar character and plot twists, skilful film-making and, as with Miss Baek, an evocation of winter cold that is not cosy but gets in your bones. And afterwards, check out Bong Joon-ho’s Memories Of Murder.
The Matrix, The Sound Of Music and Miss Baek are playing onboard. Check your in-flight entertainment system for channel information.

A story of an abused domestic worker who attempts to flee home to Indonesia while an idealistic police officer seeks to fight corruption among the ranks. In a world filled with desperation, doing the right thing isn’t just difficult but also sometimes dangerous.
After becoming a paraplegic due to a workplace accident, Leung is left to contemplate his existence after his wife leaves him. He hires Evelyn, a domestic helper, who comes to Hong Kong to earn a living while putting her dreams on hold. Despite the initial language barrier and distrust, the two strangers begin to learn more about each other and then themselves.
This movie won six awards at the recent 30th Festival Filem Malaysia, including Best Film.

Tell us a bit about yourself, where you are from and the kind of family you grew up in. I am 28 years old, soon to be 29. I was born in Kuala Lumpur as the eldest child with three younger sisters. I am now happily married with two daughters, aged four and two. Your third child is on the way. When is your wife expected to deliver? Yes, our third child is due in October. The girls are so excited that the eldest, Alisha, has been trying to teach Ariana how to be an older sister. What made you choose a career in music? Music and showbiz were not the intended career path at first. My dream, initially, was to become a pilot. However, course fees would cost about RM150,000 and my family made it clear to me that I would have had to find my own way to pay for it. My dad then saw an article about a televised singing competition called One In A Million; this was when I was around 16 years old. They were offering a prize money of RM1 million, so my dad pointed at it and said, “There’s your fee.” I took part and didn’t win, so the pilot idea never worked out, but that opened another door for me in music and showbiz. Tell us about your passion for music. I have always loved music and had performed at school events before this. When I was 14, I even got to perform as one of the Lost Boys in a West End production of Peter Pan – The Musical at Genting Highlands. The experience helped me to improve on my singing and I learned how to dance and act too. Tell us about One In A Million and how your music career began. I initially told myself that I was going to win this competition and use the prize money to become a pilot. I knew One In A Million wasn’t going to be easy though, because I was competing against a lot of talented singers as well as Dayang Nurfaizah, who was already a big name back then. Surprisingly, I managed to finish in the top three, just ahead of Dayang even. Shortly after the competition, I was invited to do the opening act at a Dina Nadzir concert in Singapore and it was there that a Sony Music executive took an interest in me and signed me on to the label. You have been in showbiz for over a decade. Was it difficult to find success there? It is definitely a struggle when you’re starting out. I got into acting around 2008 and acted in
plenty of television dramas, but I was never in the lead role and shows were never at the right time slot. And because I was still young, I was sometimes not taken seriously when being considered for roles in film and television. Once, when I was offered a role in a film, I told them my rate and they asked me back, “What is your credibility? Who are you to ask for that price?” It was definitely tough. Even after producing three albums and a few hit singles, I still hadn’t gotten my big break. How did you persevere in showbiz and what was the turning point in your career? After One In A Million, I told myself that I will give myself five years. If I haven’t made it anywhere by then, then it’s probably not for me. But things kept coming one after the other and they were slowly getting bigger. I think my big break came when I was acting in Tundukkan Playboy Itu, which was showing at a prime-time slot on TV3 at the start of 2016. Although I was only playing the second lead role, my popularity started to shoot up around this time and more people started to like my acting. Shortly after this, I also landed the lead role in another television drama, Dia Semanis Honey, and this kept the momentum going. How do you balance your time between your family and career? Balancing between family and career is definitely not easy, but you have to make time for them, not excuses. It doesn’t matter if I’m tired. There was a time early on in my marriage, when I was basically working seven days a week for a whole year. But I’m an early riser no matter what time I sleep, so I try to make the most of my time. I’ll be up at 6 am to have breakfast and play with my kids in the morning before sending them to my mum’s house. And when I get back at night, I try to spend a little more time with them before going to bed. To some extent, maybe it was a good thing that I did not get my big break too early. If I got the attention that I have now when I was starting out, I probably wouldn’t be able to handle it. Now that I have a family, I think I am much calmer and composed.
surreal to be standing at the starting line feeling both excited and nervous at the same time. The atmosphere was incredible and everyone there was so positive and encouraging. The race was physically and emotionally challenging and my body told me to stop on so many occasions. But I will always remember what it was like to cross the finish line. In that moment, I forgot how tired I was and just felt this wave of euphoria flooding me. Even though I was exhausted by the end, I was really glad that I did it and was thinking to myself, “I need to do this again next year!” As soon as they announced the date for this year’s race in October, I started training to prepare myself for the Full Ironman race this time. Tell us about your preparations for the race this year. Swimming has always been my strong suit because I took up swimming as a kid to help me deal with asthma. I ended up taking part in swimming competitions in school and winning a few of them. It was the cycling and running that I needed to train more – especially running, because I hate running. This year, I even engaged a running coach, Edan Syah, to help me improve on my running. I’m also doing a lot more cycling and I swim regularly to improve my endurance and stamina. ■
You took part in the Half Ironman race in Langkawi last year. Tell us about the experience. It was by far one of the toughest things I have ever done. There is nothing like being at the event on race day. It was
